Summer has arrived in Oklahoma which means it's time to have "fun in the sun!" Summertime fun can mean a lot of different things to people, but regardless the activity, one factor we must all consider is how to safely handle the sun and blistering heat. Geographically, most of Oklahoma is considered a subtropical climate with long, hot, humid summers. So here in Oklahoma, we "Okies" know what summer brings: big electric bills, exhausting heat, sun burns, long days, and early mornings. It also brings extended and expanded fishing opportunities, cook-outs, family vacations, gardening activities, increased farming and ranching production, and much more. We generally spend more time outdoors in the summer so it only makes sense to spend more time preventing sun burns and heat strokes! It isn't only outdoor recreational activities that puts us Okies at risk. In most cases farmers and ranchers are exposed to 2-3 times as much UV radiation as indoor workers? As we enter sunny weather, be mindful of your conditions in the field.
A long-planned summer goal of mine was to land a yellow fin tuna. This past April, I checked this goal off my list but it came at a great expense. In addition to the financial expense of our 2.5 hours chasing tuna in the open ocean, the greatest expense was the damage the gulf sun did to family's skin. The 30 seconds it would have taken to grab the sunscreen bag cost us an uber ride to a New Orleans Home Depot for Aloe plants, two emergency room visits, and a trip to the skin clinic. Two out of the six fishermen on board got second degree burns and although everyone has healed fine; this lack of prevention left a diminished mark on what was a fishing trip of a lifetime.
What can we do to prevent sun damage? There are many ways to protect our bodies against the damaging sun. One might think it would take just one time to learn when and how to take precautions,
but it obviously doesn't. If it did, aloe vera gel sales wouldn't be what they are today.
Here are few simple steps to take when planning outside activities this summer:
1. Get at least eight hours of sleep.
2. Eat regular meals.
3. Avoid drinking energy drinks such as Monsters or Red Bulls.
4. Drink four waters to every one sports drink like Gatorade or Poweraid.
5. Wear sunscreen, and apply it regularly throughout your day.
6. Wear long sleeve, performance clothing, such as a fishing shirt along with a hat or head covering.
Of course there are many other ways to stay cool while enjoying the outdoors, but the main factors to consider are hydration and skin coverings. Go outdoors during different times of the day. Consider modifying your approach and fish early or late. Luckily for fishermen, low light conditions are more favorable in the heart of the summer. Consider starting your outdoor activities earlier. For those that aren't early risers harness your nocturnal side and see how alive the natural world is as we humans sleep!

Kubota Tractor Corporation introduced the new SVL75-3 this spring. The new SVL75-3 replaces the popular SVL75-2 with a wide range of performance, comfort and productivity features and is now available at any Great Plains Kubota full line Kubota dealership in Ada, Ardmore, Duncan, Clinton, Edmond, Norman, Shawnee or Stillwater!
“The new SVL75-3 really raises the bar for Kubota’s compact track loader line with the introduction of the first model in the -3 series,” said Jerry Corder, Kubota product manager, construction equipment. “With a wide range of performance and functionality improvements over its predecessor, and standard technology features included in the cab, operators are going to work faster and more efficiently on the jobsite.”
The new SVL75-3 is powered by a 74.3 horsepower Kubota engine with higher maximum torque, allowing for quick and efficient work. With a working range that includes a rated operating capacity of 2,490 lbs. at 35 percent or 3,557 lbs. at 50 percent, an impressive 6,191 lbs. of breakout force and a hinge pin height of 122.7 inches, the SVL75-3 can tackle the toughest tasks.
The SVL75-3’s hydraulic system features an innovative Advanced Multifunction Valve (AMV) that helps to ensure smooth movement of all hydraulic functions when operated simultaneously allowing operators to run the auxiliary hydraulics, bucket and loader arm functions at the same time with a lower risk of stalling. The Electronic Travel Torque Management System is designed to enable operators to work faster and with more power by constantly monitoring the load of the machine to optimally control hydraulic pump output according to the load, reducing engine stalls for smoother operation in even the toughest conditions.
Updated travel features include faster two-speed travel and the Advanced Auto Downshift system from Kubota compact excavators that automatically downshifts from high to low gear while making turns, immediately pro-
viding the maximum amount of torque needed when exiting a turn. Operators also have the ability to change their travel response sensitivity with the choice of three track response settings: mild, normal and quick.
- A SPACIOUS ONE-PIECE SEALED CAB WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FEATURES -
The SVL75-3 is equipped with Kubota’s new one-piece sealed cab that helps prevent dirt, dust, rain and debris from entering the operator space while also reducing noise levels. Operators step into a wide cab entrance through a sliding front door that can be opened regardless of the position of the bucket or loader arms, and machine operation is possible with the door open. Front and rear LED work lights and a large upper windshield allows for increased operator visibility, day or night.
A new 7-inch color LCD touch panel with jog dial comes standard in the SVL75-3 and is conveniently positioned to the front right of the operator for easy visibility and fast access. The LCD panel gives operators access to a wide range of functions and vital information, like battery charge, hydraulic oil and coolant temperature, auxiliary mode and fuel level, and is also where the standard rear- view camera is displayed. Additional features include keyless engine start, with the ability to save up to 51 user passcodes, and a new integrated Bluetooth radio that provides seamless streaming and hands-free calling, available in closed cab models only.
When it is time to service the SVL75-3, maintenance is a breeze thanks to easy access to the engine compartment, battery and fluid filters, while the radiator and oil cooler are conveniently located on top of the engine compartment making them easy to reach for cleaning and routine maintenance. An optional reversing fan helps to keep the radiator intake free of dust and debris to ensure optimal air flow. The one-piece sealed cabin can be tilted up 56.5 inches without having to lift the boom, providing access to the hydraulic pumps, valves, lines and hydraulic tank.
How are pastures going to be utilized when the grass returns? Will they be used to replenish hay supplies or are animals going to be purchased to graze the available forages? In many cases, operations were forced to liquidate or greatly reduce their cow herd numbers in 2022. And now with the rainfall returning, it appears that the drought is over in many areas. So the question now is, what to do with the grass? If the decision is to buy cows, they will be expensive, exceeding $2000/head in most situations or the grass can be harvested in the form of hay. However, hay has to be sold or utilized to have value. If there is continued rainfall, hay will be plentiful and with reduced numbers of cattle, there should be a drop in the value of a bale of hay. One of these options still could be the best option for your operation.
Another option might be to take a look at other species (goats, sheep, e.g.) grazing or multi-species grazing. With this option, the additional investment in animals will be less and could give you greater flexibility. Take time to read the articles that outline multi-species grazing from consultants at the Noble Research Institute. It could give you a new perspective on what you consider doing with your property.
Grazing land managers who graze multiple livestock species in the same animal groups or on the same acres of land see ecological as well as economic benefits that could improve the sustainability of their operations. Multispecies grazing can be used to more effectively utilize all of the browse and forage in pastures, target weeds and brush, and reduce parasite loads across pastures. These benefits could also lead to increased revenues or decreased costs. Regardless, using multiple species to capture these benefits is not always sunny days. Including additional species on the ranch will add layers of management and an additional set of challenges. Grazing land managers who have effectively implemented multispecies grazing were briefly interviewed and asked to list the most difficult challenges they face. These managers operate grazing land in southern Oklahoma, northern Texas and the Edwards Plateau area in south-central Texas. They identified fencing needs, predator issues, working facilities and veterinary care as the top challenges that grazing land managers will face when implementing multispecies grazing. Top identified challenges for multispecies grazing:
Beef cattle operation managers who plan on adding other species and have five-wire barbwire fencing will have a challenge keeping sheep or goats in areas intended. Many managers have success in upgrading their fences with the addition of a few strands of hot-wire, while others require the conversion of barbwire to net-wire fencing to hold back goats. This is
especially true for exterior fencing. Areas with high densities of browse seem to be more conducive to adding hot-wire to existing fence, while areas with sparse stands of browse and few forbs might require net-wire fencing. Not only will this add varying levels of labor, but it will also add expense to prepare the ranch for the new management technique. Grazing land managers will have to weigh the benefits they will receive from multispecies grazing with the costs of time and money to modify existing fencing before the decision is made to adopt this practice. Sheep could require less fence modification than goats, but sheep may or may not meet the manager's goals especially when it comes to brush suppression.
The cattle working facilities most ranches have in place are usually not adapted to working smaller animals such as sheep or goats. Gaps between rails in the panels could be too wide, and the alley widths usually allow animals to turn around easily. This makes moving the animals through the working pens difficult. A separate set of pens might be needed to facilitate working sheep and goats. The methods and pharmaceuticals needed to work these animals are different from cattle and will add to the learning curve for managers who are new to smaller animals. Many feel that sheep and goats require more labor to care for. Many times sheep and goats will need their hooves trimmed because they will not wear down. This is very labor intensive and is an example of a management practice that is normally not needed in beef cattle production.
Predation can be a major issue for sheep and goat producers in many areas of the Southern Great Plains. Managers use donkeys, llamas or guard dogs to pro-
tect herds. A good guard dog seems to be the most effective at keeping predators at bay. The breed of guard dog could be a personal preference as it seems there are good individuals from each breed that have been developed to guard smaller animals like sheep and goats. Having multiple dogs could be key as it may be trial and error to discover which individual dog will be most conducive for different management styles and needs. Many producers use mobile dog sheds for their guard dogs' care. Regardless of the guard animal type utilized, predator management is an added cost and an additional management skill that grazing land managers must develop when adding multispecies grazing to a ranch plan.
Finding a veterinarian who has experience with sheep or goats could be an issue in certain areas. These animals have different diseases, parasites and other health issues to deal with than cattle. Veterinarians who practice in areas with predominantly beef production might have the same learning curve as the grazing managers new to sheep and goat production. These are just a few of the issues that come along with adding multiple species to a grazing operation. As with any other decision managers make in their operations, the benefits must be weighed against the costs and challenges to ensure that multispecies grazing is a practice that meets the goals, management style and skill set of the manager. It seems more and more producers are finding that increased grazing animal biodiversity results in enough benefits to overcome the costs and challenges associated with incorporating multiple species. The most beneficial tool to help in transitioning to this grazing type is visiting with neighbors who've already worked through these challenges to see what has worked for them.
At Great Plains Kubota, we strive to be the brand that serves not only during normal business hours, but all the time! Our growing team of dispatchers and field service technicians is dedicated to providing you quality service when and wherever. We currently have three full time Field Service Techs or (FSTs) that have a passion for getting customers’ units up and running again when it matters most. Field service is a great solution for customers that are trying to avoid longer downtime that might be caused by a backlog of larger repairs in the shop.
Our FSTs don’t just come to work to collect a paycheck, they come to work because they enjoy serving their customers and they know how important the agricultural and construction industries are to their communities. When a couple of our FSTs were asked what they enjoy most in their careers, they said the best part of every day was getting to know their customers on a more personal level, understanding their operation, and making suggestions on products we have that could make customers’ work more efficient. Our FSTs understand all the new technology being introduced into the agricultural industry because they are using it in their own lives.
Michael Alexander, our field tech responsible for covering the majority of our tractors and CE all over the state, has a small commercial cow-calf operation he runs with his father in law. He understands the challenges that are created when trying to manage a successful business in an ever changing environment. Michael

The last few years have been challenging in all areas of business. Everywhere you turn there are inventory shortages. “Next-Day-Air” has turned into “product unavailable at this time.” There are new phrases we use in everyday conversations, Supply Chain Shortages, Global Demand, and Allocations, are just a few. All of this combined has increased frustrations from both a customer and supplier perspective. Where do we go from here one might ask?
We are faced with two choices. We can continue to try and do business the same way we always have, or we can embrace and meet the new inventory challenges as they arise. Here at Great Plains Kubota we choose to embrace the challenge. GP has put together a team of Business Development Managers (Parts, Sales, Service, Inventory, and Rental) along with numerous support staff to face the challenges presented. This team is looking at not only what the needs are today, but what the needs are going to be next month, next quarter, and even next year. By embracing these challenges and looking ahead we can get to our end goal. That goal is providing the best customer experience at Great Plains Kubota.
“Customer Experience” is something that a majority of businesses seem to have forgotten as all of the inventory frustrations have mounted. Lack of information, rude customer service, and lack of a provided solutions are what most customers are experiencing on a daily basis. GP wants to stand out from the crowd. We value our customers and are endeavoring to lead the way in “Customer Experience.”
Inventory will continue to challenge all businesses. Here at GP we are committed to embracing those challenges as they arise and providing solutions to our customers.

“Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.”
- Proverbs 1:25
What is encouragement? Encouragement can give us courage, hope, confidence, and support. It stimulates and urges others to move forward.
An encourager can give courage, hope, confidence to those around them, whether it be family, friends, employees, or coworkers.
If you are a leader, your words are magnified. Something that seems of no consequence to you can lift a team member’s spirits or crush them. If you are a parent, this power is amplified even more.
Eugene Peterson translates a passage from the Bible (James 3) this way, “A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it!”
Whether you are a company leader, a parent, a mentor, or someone that others look up to for any reason, your words hold immense power. That’s why it is critical that your words build others up, not tear them down. They must be encouraging.
But what is encouragement? It might help to establish what it is…and what it isn’t.
Encouragement
Encouragement is telling others that you believe in them before they even start.
Most leaders think that encouragement is saying things like: “Great job,” or “Well done...way to go!” But that is not encouragement at all. It’s a reward. It’s what one expects after a job well done.
Encouragement, on the other hand, is telling others that you believe in them before they even start. Offering rewards by saying “great job” is important, but it is not encouragement.
So how do you encourage others and inspire them to achieve more than they think is possible? These are some ways to begin
When you take the time to learn about others, it shows that you care. This empowers and encourages them.
“Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up."

If you are a business leader, the best way to do this is one-on-one sessions with your employees.
Take the time to learn about their family, in terests, fears, challenges, and dreams. One of the single best ways to encourage others is to care about what they care about.
Use these four significant words: Take the time to tell your team, your friends, and your family, that you believe in their abilities and you are confident they will succeed.
The great thing about encouraging someone in writing is that they can keep the note forever. I have kept notes for many years. I even get them back out to look at them when times are difficult. It makes a difference to have those words of encouragement in those times.
but let’s be clear that helping is not micromanaging or meddling. Simply ask how you can help them. It’s important for others to know that while you trust them,
This may sound simple, but too many times in today’s busy world we don’t make time to support our family and others. Our priorities are to work or play, when we should be at a child’s ballgame or school play. It’s understandable that we can’t be everywhere, but being there is a great way of encouraging. It tells those you are supporting that they matter.
4.
One of the best ways to encourage someone is to tell others how great he or she is. When you speak of others in public, praise them. When you talk about their family, praise them.
At work when you talk about a team member with a fellow manager, talk him up. Over time it will create a culture of encouragement.
5.
When you assign responsibility to someone, even if you don’t verbalize it, you are saying, “I trust you.” Trust conveys belief.
When you give someone responsibility, remember you are not only trusting them with the expectation of success, you are also allowing them to make mistakes. When you micromanage or try to “fix” things along the way, it is discouraging and demotivating. Give them the responsibility, trust the person, and get out of the way.
This might sound like the opposite of number five,
The greatest thing about each of these options is they are effective in any environment. They work in the office, at home,
When you show that you care, it tells others you believe in them. When you talk positively about them to others, trust them with important things, and help them succeed, you are encouraging them to believe in themselves, and as a result, they can accomplish more than they or you might have thought possible.
Make a commitment today to practice just one of these ways to encourage. Whether it is with your team, your colleagues, your family, or others. You will be well on your way to serving others by being an encourager. You’ll encourage others, and as a result you will also serve God.
Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

Our our newly acquired Ardmore Kubota dealership has expanded our GP family and provides opportunities to serve
Great Plains Ardmore is officially the newest member of the Great Plains Kubota family. Although this dealership is new to GP, the Kubota brand itself is nothing new to customers of the Ardmore area. Our newly acquired Kubota dealership at 501 North Commerce Street in the heart of Ardmore has provided orange iron to the area for years. The previous dealership was A&A Equipment, but even before A&A, Tractors Inc of Ardmore offered Kubota to the area! Now, customers can take advantage of a few additions and changes.
What's new at Ardmore's Kubota dealership? Ardmore Kubota customers will now have the option to purchase Kubota construction equipment. That's right, Ardmore customers can now purchase Kubota compact track loaders, skid steers, mini-excavators, wheel loaders, backhoes, and even mini-skid steers. Additionally the GP exclusive 10Year tractor warranty will be offered with tractor purchases (except the M7 & M8). Finally and perhaps the biggest change is the personnel. The new Store Manager, Justin Eubanks and his team will offer customers the complete Kubota experience and an increased focus on Kubota parts and service.
So what hasn't changed at the Ardmore dealership? For starters, customers can still call 580-223-7889 to get in touch with the store. That's right, we kept the same number so the long-time A&A customers that know the phone number by heart can get in touch with GP as easy as ever.
Meet the Ardmore team! Justin Eubanks is the Store Manager; Adam Twitchell will take care of Parts and Service; Buddy Jordan and Todd Blakely are the Sales PROs; Doug Bruce is the driver; and last but not least, Billy Harvey and Christopher Adkins are busy in the shop!
Save now on the M8 tractor. Part of our tractor lineup rated #1 for durability and owner experience in the U.S. as awarded by Progressive Farmer.* Field ready for hay, row crop, material handling and

When producers are asked why they raise cattle, their answer is almost always along the lines of “our livestock enterprise contributes to the profitability of the ranch.” Yes, livestock should always be profitable, but some producers also see livestock grazing as an essential tool that is shaping the landscape and regenerating the soil on their ranch.
The tool of adaptive grazing uses higher livestock densities for short durations between long periods of rest to allow complete plant recovery and soil improvement. It is not prescriptive, but rather allows for changes in animal densities and pasture design in response to how the land and livestock respond. Adaptive grazing also can include using grazing multiple livestock species together on a ranch to reap even more benefits.
Submitted
The objective of adaptive grazing is to mimic grazing patterns of bison and elk (yes… both species occurred simultaneously) that once roamed large portions of the Great Plains but have since been removed. This type of grazing leads to the benefits of accelerated plant growth; improved carbon capture and water infiltration; higher quality forage and more. The resulting plant communities are more responsive to future grazing events and more resilient to other factors that affect ecosystem stability, such as drought.
Using multiple species for grazing, such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry, allows for greater utilization of forages, improves soil health, increases biodiversity, improves wildlife habitat and creates opportunity for additional enterprises, profitability and risk mitigation.
- How and What Different Species GrazeGrasses, forbs and woody plants are all forages that can be grazed by livestock. When using adaptive grazing, many producers find that any one species of livestock will consume a wide variety of plants, but, in general, the diets of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry do differ, and together, they use more of the total forage available. Let’s just compare three ruminants.
• Cattle are grazers who eat mainly grasses, but they will consume some forbs and browse (leaves, young shoots and twigs of woody plants), because the latter two are generally higher in forage quality (i.e., protein and energy) and have some medicinal qualities.
• Sheep consume a greater proportion of forbs and browse compared to cattle, but this also depends on their environment. While cattle bite off large portions of a plant or plants by wrapping their tongue around forage and pulling, sheep bite off and eat select parts of plants. Sheep may only graze the youngest leaf or two and then move to the next plant.
• Goats are browsers who eat a higher proportion of
woody plants than most other ruminants. They will consume some forbs, and if they need to, they will eat grasses. Because of this diet, a producer can use goats to turn the liability of brush encroachment into a profitable enterprise.
Cattle, sheep, and goats all have different foraging behaviors and preferences, but they may have a little bit of dietary overlap at times. For a grazer, such dietary overlap means animals will be competing for available forage. Dietary overlap will differ seasonally, with the greatest overlap occurring during the winter months (dormant season) when plant abundance and diversity are reduced.
When multiple livestock species live on a single ranch, the fact that they have different behaviors, different preferences and some dietary overlap sets the stage for increased plant and soil microbial biodiversity. Both of those outcomes are key to improving soil health. Goats eat more woody plants than other ruminants, they can help to tame brush encroachments on property.
Grazing strategies can be adapted to change animal behaviors in order to achieve the desired impact on the land. Producers can use intensity, fencing and placement of water and mineral to alter behaviors.
• Intensity refers to the density of animals in a pasture/paddock that is grazed. The higher the density, the more competitive and the less selective an animal can be when grazing. This strategy encourages animals to eat what is available, even if it isn’t preferred.
• Temporary fencing can be used to strategically place animals where greater intensity (or trample) is desired, or instead restrict access to areas of a pasture/ paddock that need more rest. Paddock design, including shape and orientation, will affect grazing behavior. For example, pinch points in a paddock’s design can be used to facilitate more hoof action in a particular area.
• Water and mineral placements are also powerful tools to help manage animal distribution. These loca-
tions will almost always receive proportionally higher impact. Water and mineral sources can be strategically placed in a pasture/paddock to draw animals into areas that would normally have minimal to no impact, such as brushy areas or areas avoided due to topography.
• Sheep and goats, including their lambs and kids, need to be able to access water, and they need different solutions for water than cattle. As animals that are smaller in stature, they need their own waterers that are easy to reach and use. Continued
• Fencing is another challenge. Electric fence is a psychological barrier for livestock. With cattle, one strand will do the job. Although you can keep sheep and goats behind a single strand of temporary electric fence, sometimes you will need multiple strands. Goats in particular take more risks and may test the fence. One alternative for small ruminants is using a physical barrier like field fence or woven wire. However, this
option is more costly and less adaptable when sectioning off pasture areas.
• Predation is another concern when grazing small ruminants, so the use of guardian animals (e.g., dogs and donkeys) to protect such livestock from coyotes, wolves, feral swine and other predators is recommended. Plans and staffing will need to include feeding and care of the guardian animals.
