"LITTLE BOAT-BIG FISH"

Those who have read my outdoor articles know I enjoy just about any outdoor activity, but hands down, fishing ranks number one with me. It doesn't matter what kind of fishing either. I don't need expensive gear or the knowledge of latest techniques. Just give me a little time and some water. I think a lot of fishermen can get caught up in the excitement of shiny new equipment but it doesn't take a big boat or expensive reel to be a successful fisherman. For example, the world record Flathead catfish was caught by Ken Paulie, Kansas, on a small Zebco. Paulie was actually crappie fishing when he hooked the 123 pound monster. I landed the biggest catfish of my life last winter using only my line. I hauled in a 67 pound Blue Cat by simply pulling the line in because my reel was seized up with salt water from the ocean. I won't let that happen again! Additionally, this summer I landed a 15 pound Hybrid White Bass in fast current with an old ultra light, using four pound test line that had been on the reel for two years! My point is it doesn't take tons of money or fancy gear to catch big fish. I could go on and on about big fish but this story is about a small boat!

I've had little boats in the past, but none had that perfect combo of length and weight. My small boats have always been either too much or not enough. I had an old V-Bottom boat that came from a salvage yard that worked great, but I could never fish from it on public waters because it had no title. Now, however, the days driving to the capitol to claim a lost title are over as last summer I acquired a small v-bottom boat from a coworker. Soon, my summer was in motion. The boat and trailer became a "project", and once completed, I was ready to fish on a variety of waters, both private and public. From the portable depth finder to the trolling motor, this new/ old boat was turning heads. Seriously, when out and about with this boat, I received more compliments and questions than I would have had pulling a jet boat! What that told me was, like me, other fishermen admired and knew the value of a small boat.

Fixing up this old boat was an affordable and fun project. It took some problem solving, trial and error, and patience, but eventually I adapted the limited space to fit my needs. Even the process of getting the up-to-date title was interesting. I'm not going to give any local tag agencies a plug here, but if it weren't for one particular agency, I might have never titled this boat.

I had more fun this past summer fishing out of that little boat than I have had in a long time. The project of

refurbishing the boat revitalized my passion for fishing. I found myself searching for new water where I could launch the boat. While most of my go-to watersheds didn't produce many fish last summer, they helped me learn and get comfortable with my small boat. It's light as well as easy to get in and out of, so launching and landing in muddy pond banks made fishing easier and less strenuous. I started catching so many numerous and quality fish I just had to share my fish stories with my co-workers. "Little boat" fever took hold, and soon friends and others made their own small boat purchases throughout the summer. My little boat also made it easier for me to take friends and coworkers fishing. One fishing buddy in particular benefited the most from this little boat. Last spring my friend had an accident and was paralyzed below the waist. By late summer we were both catching nice bass from the boat. This small craft, with it's ease of use, made it possible for us to fish together. I have no problem fishing alone, but my stories are usually so BIG that unless I have a witness, nobody believes me! (I guess that's the nature of fishing and one of the reasons I love it so much.) Fishing provides me with memories and stories; Memories and stories that I remember down to the last detail.

The only thing this little boat didn't do last summer but will this summer is navigate Oklahoma's rivers in search of trophy Flathead catfish. By it's design, this boat will be ideal for targeting Flatheads in smaller overlooked rivers. With any luck I'll keep up the big fish stories, and will continue taking my friends and co-workers fishing. Happy fishin!

I

come from a long line of family business people. Both of my grandfathers were in business for themselves, and neither my father or I ever worked anywhere except in our family business. I’ve seen first hand that a family business can work really well, or it can wreck family relationships for generations if there is strife, particularly when it's time for the next generation to take over. Unfortunately, most family businesses never survive to the second generation even if the business itself is successful.

The number one reason a successful family business doesn't last past the founder is there are no family members that have the desire or the qualifications to take over the business. My wife, Betty, and I have two sons that have grown up working in our family’s business. Will and Garrett learned the value of having a good work ethic early in life. They grew up on our small ranch where there was always plenty of work to do and then spent their high school and college summers working for my brother in our family’s equipment rental business. After graduating from college with business degrees, both have spent most of their working years performing nearly every job in the equipment dealerships and rental yards. They both have the experience and proven ability to take over the business. For that, I am truly blessed and grateful.

Another reason that many family businesses fail at succession is “Dad” hangs around too long. The light bulb came on for me one day when we were having a family meeting and one of our sons said in a respect-

ful tone, “Dad, I’m nearly 40”. I guess I was talking to them like a father would talk to his teenage sons! That’s when I realized that it was time to start the transitional control of Great Plains Kubota to the next generation.

While writing this article, I was given this photo taken in approximately 1939 of my great grandfather holding his horse for my dad and my aunt. The thought came to me how silly it would look if our two adult sons were sitting on that horse with me holding the reins!

So, it’s time. I am “passing the reins.” To use another phrase, I am putting myself “out to pasture.” The good news is I really like being out in the pasture!

Growing up it was always a running joke in our family that, whenever there was a job to do on the ranch, I was always the one who got to operate the equipment while Garrett always had to do the manual work. It wasn’t really a joke because it was true! I have always been drawn to the equipment aspect of any of the businesses that we’ve been involved in. It’s one of my life passions. Most summer evenings if you call me on the phone, you’ll hear my “equipment therapy” running in the background. I love playing in the dirt with the equipment we sell.

I’ve held almost every job in our equipment dealerships, from the wash rack to the back office. In all of those jobs, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn about every aspect of the business. One of the things that I’ve always been thankful for is Garrett and I were never handed anything in the business. We were never “given” a management position just because of who we were. We had to earn it. We had to put in the time and effort to learn the business and earn the respect of

our co-workers. Looking back, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Working with my family has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Nothing against a college education, but I learned more about business principles while working for my Dad between my college classes than I actually learned in them. The three of us have always worked well together. It’s true a family business always has its challenges but the Lord has blessed us with great family relationships that have stood the test of time.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to take the “reins” at Great Plains Kubota. I want to build on the legacy that Bill has created through his hard work and dedication to the brand. I look forward to a future that is full of opportunities for GP to serve new customers in new locations, while yet remaining faithful to our long-time customers in existing locations. I am firmly convinced that we have the very best team of highly-trained, customer-focused employees in the industry.

I have told our employees that this year, "2023," I want to accomplish three things. First I want GP and our working family to grow. I think growth is essential for our company to have the size and scale to compete in an industry that looks bigger all the time. But growth isn’t just about more locations, it’s really about growing leaders. Growing leaders in our company means we're continuing to train, teach, and empower our employees to serve our customers well in every department. Second, I want us to excel. If we grow our business, but don’t excel in how we treat our customers, then we have missed the mark, and our reputation will be tarnished. Excellence is creating an experience within our dealerships that leave customers impressed and eager to return. If we aren’t doing that, I want to know about it. Third, I want our company to both

growth and excel together. In this company, we do our very best to treat our employees and customers like family. THE RENTAL SIDE OF THE REINS

To better explain the changes our company is undertaking Great Plains living has provided explanations throughout the previous two articles. You've read about the old and the new. Now read about a trailblazer in his own right. Garrett Clark, a name a lot of Kubota customers know, is now the owner of the recently rebranded Okie Rents. Formerly GP Rents, Okie Rents is now it's own business and is completely separate from Great Plains Kubota. The separation of the two entities is a positive change providing Okie Rents with growth, supply and support. There are many ways to write

a story, but sometimes a simple "question & answer" format works best. In this last segment of the three part Heritage story, Great Plains (GP) asks Okie Rents owner, Garrett Clark (GC) some questions about his newly branded rental stores.

GP: Who will Okie Rents serve?

GC: We will serve local customers big and small, in Ada, Ardmore, Davis, Duncan, and Norman. We are local and will take care of our local customers around our areas, hence the new name... Okie Rents!

GP: Whose decision was it to separate?

GC: It was a joint decision among the three of us: Bill, my dad, Will, my older brother, and me. It's been

a strategy we've been working on for years but as our rental business grew, we knew the time to begin the separation of dealership and rental store was now.

GP: What challenges have you faced since the split from Great Plains Kubota?

GC: For me, communication has been the hardest struggle. Knowing when and what to tell our employees and customers has been difficult. It is just going to take some time.

GP: What was the reasoning behind the separation?

GC: This has been something our family has been debating on for a while, and because our overall business has grown, it has given us the ability to make this move. We grew two businesses that were sustainable on their own so it just made sense to separate at some point.

GP: What are the main differences, if any, between the GP Rents rental stores and Okie Rents?

GC: We think by rebranding our rental only locations to Okie Rents it will set us apart from the Kubota dealerships. Customers need to know we rent everything from sewer snakes, manlifts, to a Kubota skid steer.

GP: What can customers expect with your newly created business model?

GC: Our goal is to create rental focused-employees who are more educated regarding larger variety of rentals that can better meet the needs of our customers and thus better serve our communites.

GP: What rentals do you offer that you didn't before?

GC: We will now have a much larger variety of equipment, from lawn and garden tools for do-it-yourselfers to both small and large contractor tools and equipment for the pros!

GP: What do customers need to do in case of emergencies?

GC: We have store managers. If an emergency arises

just call their cell and they will assist in any way.

GP: When will the transformation be 100% complete?

GC: We are already completely split. We've had separate management and accounting offices since the beginning of January and we're starting the process of rebranding signage and more.

GP: When are the new stores open?

GC: The Okie Rents rental stores are open from 7-5, MondayThursday, and 7-5:30 on Friday. We are closed Saturday and Sunday with exceptions of emergencies.

GP: Where can Ada rental customers expect to get their rentals now that it's not at the Kubota dealership?

GC: In Ada, Okie Rents is located at 1011 Lonnie Abbott Blvd., previously Ada Sales and Rental owned by the harris family. The store is just down the street from Great Plains Ada.

GP: The big question folks are going to have is why did you separate?

GC: In our family, we all have great relationships with one another, so we wanted to do this our way and what we felt was the right way. We took our time and sought sound advice on the best way to divide the two businesses. Basically we've taken a slow path to achieve this.

GP: Why did you decide to take on the rental business?

GC: After deciding to form two businesses from one, and even though both Will and I had grown up in the business, working in all departments, Will was curretnly managing the Kubota dealerships and would continue doing so as it is a better fit for his personality. The rental business seemed better suited to my personality so I will took over as the Okie Rents President/CEO.

Customers may have noticed there's been a lot of changes with Great Plains Kubota over the last year. Change can be scary, but for our brand it's nothing but positivity and more services for our customers!

This year all of our Kubota dealerships will offer Toro equipment. Our Toro Representative, Mo Renfro, who has 35 years experience as an account executive for outdoor power companies commented on the recent addition to the GP equipment lineup.

"I'm looking forward to doing business with a great family-owned business that is growing. Great Plains Kubota will fill some holes in my market area for sure," said Renfro.

for the spring breeding season for cows

Focus on Body Condition Score. Body condition at calving time determines to a great extent the length of the anestrous period, and therefore, the likelihood the cow becomes pregnant in timely fashion for the next calf crop. If the cow is in a lower body condition score (BCS) at calving, she will have fewer, if any, opportunities to conceive in a 60-day breeding season. Body condition change after calving can have an impact on the return to heat cycles, but usually cannot compensate for low body condition at calving.

Make sure vaccinations are up to date.  Implementing a sound pre-breeding vaccination program can enhance a cow's ability to become pregnant on time and carry a healthy calf to term. These vaccinations include:

• Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) - The most commonly diagnosed viral cause of abortions in cattle.

• Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) - Known to cause early embryonic death, abortion and persistently infected (PI) calves.

• Leptospirosis - Bacterial infection linked to infertility, abortions, weak calves and reduced milk production.

• Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) - Respiratory disease that can cause serious illness and even death among calves.

• Parainfluenza 3 (PI3) - Respiratory disease associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) that may result in secondary respiratory infections such as bacterial pneumonia.

• Clostridia - Successful treatment of clostridial bacteria is rare, but prevention through vaccination is effective.

Get your bull checked out. A bull can look and act like he’s primed to produce offspring, but the question is can he deliver? Data shows that 1 of every 5 bulls tested will fail a breeding soundness exam, according to the Society of Theriogenology. That’s why a thorough breeding soundness examination prior to the start of the breeding season

– along with frequent monitoring of health, soundness of feet and legs, and continued desire and ability of bulls to mate throughout the breeding season – are critically important in order to ensure a bull’s high reproductive success. This is especially important if you have one-bull cow groups, where a bull failure might result in no calves.

Plan out your breeding season.

A shorter breeding and calving season can equal more money in your pocket. Well-defined 60-day breeding and calving seasons will pay off in heavier, more uniform groups of calves to sell at marketing time. If a small cow operation can market a sizeable number of calves together in one lot, it will realize a greater price per pound (on the average) than similar calves sold in singles or small lots.

Inventory your supplies.

Prior to the breeding season, take stock of your current inventory needed for the breeding season. This is especially important for those using A.I. Supplies needed would include CIDRs, vaccinations, AI injectables (GnRH and PGF), and semen. Herd inventory is also crucial to a successful breeding season. Inventory the bull power needed for your operation. Research indicates a general rule-of-thumb for the number of cows and replacement heifers a bull should be expected to cover in a breeding season:

• A 12-month-old bull – about 12 females in his first breeding season.

• An 18-month-old bull – about 18 or 19 females.

• A 2-year-old bull – up to 25 cows or replacement heifers.

• A mature bull – 25 to 35 females per season.

Why is this important?

The most important driver of profitability in a cow-calf operation is percent of cows bred. If you are not in the 88-92% range of cows bred for all of those exposed, then making a profit will be very difficult, even in current time of high calf prices. Use this time of high calf prices to get the breeding program where it needs to be.

BUILDING For The Future

In all great partnerships, each side believes they are getting a good deal out of the relationship. It’s even better when the trust level is such that transactions are made on a handshake agreement. The partnership between Jeff Gibbs Construction and Great Plains Kubota is that type of partnership, but you might say it goes back specifically to Jeff Gibbs and Bill Clark. For both men, their word means everything, making it easier to work together. Great Plains Kubota and Gibbs Construction have a type of relationship where each company works for or serves the other. I would call that a partnership.

When I asked Bill Clark how the partnership started, he said he knew a customer that was in the construction business, and GP was needing some buildings built for their dealerships. After talking to Jeff Gibbs, Bill said he knew Jeff was someone he could work with. Notably, the things that were important to Bill were important to Jeff and vice versa. It was this relationship that brought Jeff Gibbs construction into being part of building the future for Great Plains Kubota.

Jeff has earned a strong reputation as one of Oklahoma’s top home builders. He was recognized by the Stillwater Home Builders Association as Builder of the Year in 2010 and remains a licensed inspector for residential, commercial and industrial construction. Jeff is the only builder who is a licensed building official in the state of Oklahoma. This status is obtained through continuing education, keeping Gibbs Construction at the forefront of modern practices.

Jeff has a reputation for quality, therefore he hardly has to advertise his services. His customers come to him by word of mouth from previously satisfied customers. In fact, this is how the business relationship between Clark and Gibbs began.

In addition to their construction business, Jeff and his wife Chrystie have developed their ranch property to produce quality cattle and Boer goats. They have shown their Boer goats around the country and are continuing to improve their goats genetics through an active ET (Embryo Transfer) program. While Jeff described the livestock program as Chrystie’s, it was easy to see they both spend a lot of time on the ranch

which ultimately provides them a great place to get away. In fact, when asked what they do for fun, Jeff said that for him working on the ranch was his fun.

Through the building of their ranch, it was easy to see how they utilized their line of Kubota equipment. When asked how, 15-20 years ago they found their first Kubota RTV utility vehicle, Jeff told the story of having another brand of utility vehicle fall apart in the pasture. Still in the pasture he called the Kubota dealer and asked when he could get a new utility vehicle. The same Kubota RTV he purchased while in the field decades ago is still in use today. Jeff said he could still go jump on it and it would start just like when it was new. In fact, he said the only upkeep required of his old RTV was changing the oil and filter.

The Gibbs stated they like the reliability of the Kubota equipment to get the job done as their machines are used regularly. This quality ensures they will continue to buy and use Kubota equipment.

Jeff Gibbs Construction and Great Plains Kubota continue to partner on projects as both the Stillwater and Clinton stores were remodeled in 2022. Additionally, plans are being completed to soon build a new store in Norman.

Saturday, January 28, 2023 was a day of celebration and recognition for the Great Plains Kubota working family. All dealerships closed that Saturday so we, as a group, could enjoy a day of fellowship and reflection while kicking off the year with some well earned fun. The men and women of GP, along with their families, enjoyed a fun-filled day at a sporting club called The Cedar Gate. Here, the board of directors served employees with an afternoon filled with sporting clays and a BBQ lunch. This year Great Plains Kubota will grow together as a working family, excel as a dealership and will do so together as a team! Coming together at events like this 2023 Appreciation Kickoff Dinner are just the beginning for our working family.

Over 150 employees and their families made the trip to The Cedar Gate, just northwest of Kingfisher. A total of 15 awards were given to employees for a variety of achievements, ranging from the Brand Excellence award to top Sales PRO. Company hosted events like this will continue to serve our employees and help us grow as a working family. Last spring our GP family attended an OKC Dodgers game. This summer, plans are being made to attend a rodeo.

The past three years have brought more excitement and investment in carbon markets than Debbie Reed saw in her first two decades of working on the concept. She currently serves as executive director for the Ecosystem Services Market Consortium. While ESMC has worked with ranchers since 2019, carbon markets for crop farmers are generally further developed at this point.

Less than a half dozen marketplaces are currently available to ranchers, estimates Chad Ellis, who serves as chair of the ESMC Board of Directors in addition to his roles as CEO of Texas Agricultural Land Trust and chairman of the National Grazing Lands Coalition. A major jump in opportunities came within the past year or two, he says, and the space is constantly evolving.

CARBON

AND GRAZING

Carbon could become a new commodity as companies seek to meet net zero and/or carbon neutral goals. While technology-based solutions can pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, agriculture of-

fers a natural answer because plants (both crops and forages) can draw carbon into the soil through the process of photosynthesis.

Grazing lands, especially, have potential as they are generally managed year- round for green growth. A 2018 study from the University of California, Davis found grasslands can store more carbon than forests because they are impacted less by droughts and wildfires. (Grasslands mostly store carbon underground, whereas most of the carbon in forests is in woody biomass and leaves.)

CARBON CREDIT DEFINED

In a carbon market, a company wanting to reduce its carbon footprint will buy a “carbon credit,” usually from a brokerage company. The brokerage company contracts with the farmer/ rancher and sets requirements. Generally, the broker works with a third-party verifier to measure how much carbon the farmer/ rancher has stored over a specified period.

chief scientific officer for the East Foundation, explained during a webinar hosted by King Ranch Institute, about 273 kilograms of carbon (oxygen makes up the rest of carbon dioxide). Carbon is commonly estimated in soil test analyses as a component of soil organic matter.

ON THE RANCH

On grazing lands, ranchers can sequester an estimated 0.2 to 0.6 tons of carbon dioxide per acre, though as much as 5 to 7 tons per acre have been reported in response to management, according to the King Ranch Institute. The amount of carbon a rancher can sequester will depend on land-use history as well as environmental and geological factors. Clay soils have better ability to store carbon compared to sandy soils, and drought can limit storage. Management also plays a major role. Certain practices, such as tillage, release carbon

back into the air. Others that promote forage growth and biodiversity, minimize bare ground, and provide adequate rest to pastures after grazing generally increase soil health and sequester carbon.

GRASSROOTS CARBON

Loy Sneary’s focus on improving soil health on his ranch near the Gulf Coast, south of Houston, Texas, set him up to participate in a soil carbon market. In 2018, he and his son, Adam, switched from minimal rotation and set stocking to high-density, multipaddock grazing. Their goals were to increase the diversity and production of their forages and more economically graze their cattle. They started with 30 heifers and soon expanded to daily moves with all cattle across the ranch’s 4,000 acres.

Jim Blackburn, an environmental attorney and professor at Rice University, approached Sneary in 2017 with an opportunity. Blackburn was working with Henk Mooiweer and others on starting a carbon

market. They needed a rancher’s input.

Sneary’s ranch became the first to sign up for the resulting marketplace, Grassroots Carbon, after providing perspective to the carbon brokerage company on what would and wouldn’t work for a rancher like himself.

“If I was going to explore this and actually enter into a contract, I would want to do it with people I knew and trusted,” Sneary says. For him, that’s been Grassroots Carbon.

HOW IT WORKS

Grassroots Carbon spent almost a week taking core soil samples at Sneary’s ranch in 2020. They brought a mini drilling rig that unearthed a 1-meter sample. Depth and physical samples (rather than satellite data alone) are key, says Mitch Hagney, vice president of land steward success for Grassroots Carbon, because of debate on whether there is an eventual plateau of carbon accrual with land management practices. “If there is a carbon plateau on the top layer of soil, deeper levels continue to show increases,” Hagney says.

The samples were sent to a laboratory and analyzed for how much carbon was stored at the time. Using sampling data (neither the rancher nor Grassroots Carbon knows the exact sampling sites) and aerial imagery, an independent third-party validated projections for carbon storage. Projections come from a grazing-specific regenerative standard developed by leading soil scientists and technical working groups and endorsed by Applied Ecological Institute. Based on projections, Grassroots Carbon makes annual payments to ranchers, along with a larger payment after the second sampling at the end of five years, Hagney says. Credits are sold to corporate buyers, including Marathon Oil, Shopify, large grocery chains, and software developers. Grassroots Carbon shares 80% of the profit from carbon credits with

ranchers, meaning ranchers are not locked into a price.

The company made its first payments to ranchers in March, a total of more than $200,000 spread among participants. Dozens of ranches across the United States currently have contracts with Grassroots Carbon.

CHECK THE CONTRACT

Grassroots Carbon requires participants to eliminate tillage and, in most cases, choose from additional practices, such as increasing frequency of cattle rotations, to promote the storage of more carbon during the five- year sales period. An additional 10-year storage period follows the sales period.

The company also wants to see the rancher’s grazing management plan, which typically is shared via PastureMap, a GPS-based mobile application offered free for Grassroots Carbon participants. Members also have access to the Land Steward Alliance, which gives ranchers the chance to learn from one another and educational programming in partnership with Understanding Ag.

Each brokerage company has its own requirements, which means make sure you understand what is expected before signing a contract, Ellis says.

Seared Lamb Medallions with Basmati Rice

SPRING LAMB

You don't have to be a good cook when you have good ingredients. Good ingredients are fresh, homegrown, harvested, or raised ingredients that can't be topped by grandiose groceries. Spring's rejuvenating scent is in the air and when it comes to cooking what dinner could represent spring better than locally produced lamb and homegrown greens?

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the lamb tenderloin into bite size medallions or chunks. You can obtain lamb loins or "Back Straps," from various grocers or fresh from a local producer.

2. Season with garlic, sea salt, cracked pepper, and rosemary. Toss with Olive Oil.

3. While lamb rests to room temp, start a rice of your choice, (Basmati rice pairs well.)

4. While rice is cooking, quickly sauté the fresh garden greens you've chosen to cook with your lamb. Ghee or Coconut Oil is a healthy option to cook with, but whatever you choose, it doesn't take much as the moisture of the fresh vegetables will help cook. If you don't garden, any tender green or even peppers of any variety, along with shallots or mild onions should taste great with the main course. In the summer, squash and zucchini add seasonal tastes. Lightly toss with Balsamic vinegar.

5. After greens or veggies become tender remove and set aside. Add ample oil to cook your meat, then add in lamb, and cook to desired doneness. I suggest medium rare for best lamb flavor.

6. To finish, top rice with lamb. Serve greens on side and add fresh cut fruit or cucumber if you wish.

INGREDIENTS

Garden greens such as spinach can be planted as early as late February allowing them to be harvested within the same time frame of a spring lamb. Spinach and other early season greens don't require a lot of space, and can be easily grown in containers or raised beds which could later be used for flowers and landscaping.

Lamb obtained from a local producer is the best option for freshness. Sheep production in Oklahoma is becoming more popular with the practice of "multi-species grazing!" This practice allows livestock to replicate natural grazing patterns their wild cousins use. The sheep eat what the cows don't, thereby eliminating the need to spray chemicals creating a true organic production. Lamb meat has also become more popular in mainstream grocery stores with a variety of cuts from which to choose.

Finally, to tie the whole meal up with a good starch, I'd suggest plain Basmati rice. It's good and fluffy and has a natural flavor that seems to compliment lamb. Of course any rice or other starch for that matter would go well with this easy meal. Again, when it's fresh it's hard to mess up! -

The Student Farm at OSU, an Idea Whose Time has Come By

As a graduate of OSU with a B.S. degree in horticulture I can say without reservation that my time in Stillwater prepared me well for a life-long career in specialty crop consulting. Reflecting back on my time as a student during the mid-70’s the vast majority of my training occurred in the lecture hall. While I devoured every bit of information shared with me in the classroom, I craved more hands-on learning opportunities. My only ‘field experience’ involved preparation, planting and management of a small garden plot assigned to each student enrolled in ‘Vegetable Crop Production’. This experience, while helpful, was limited to the use of hand tools and as such was hobby scale. What I know now that I didn’t know back then is that at the time, opportunities to receive hands-on training in commercial scale specialty crop farming was limited due to a lack of resources more specifically a location large enough to accommodate commercial scale fruit and vegetable production. And now for the good news. After decades of support and input from numerous faculty, student, community, alumni and industry individuals and organizations, a student farm at OSU now has a home and is in the formative stage. The location of the new student farm is just off of 6th street (SH 51) on the west side of Stillwater on the site of the old OSU swine education facility.

The first phase of development is underway. To oversee activities two managers were hired during the summer of 2022. The two existing pastures located at the front of the property have been weed sprayed, leveled, amended with compost and planted to a winter cover crop. An irrigation system has been installed and one of the existing buildings is in the process of being converted to the headquarters office. Also, in an effort to reduce wildlife depredation, a deer fence will be installed around the field plots prior to spring planting. Plans are in the works to install a post-harvest handling facility (packing shed) in one of the existing structures or as a stand-alone facility. This is mandatory in order to meet all state and federal food safety requirements. Students have already been involved in planning the initial planting for the student farm in spring 2023. As a group exercise students enrolled in ‘Small Farm Systems and Technologies’ developed a comprehensive planting plan including variety recommendations, anticipated planting and harvest dates, crop sequences and yield estimates for a variety of vegetable crops. Over time it is hoped that students will have the opportunity to be involved in a multitude of farm activities to include soil sampling and fertilizer scheduling, soil preparation, bed formation and mulch application (plasticulture), crop establishment using various types of seeders and trans-

planters, irrigation scheduling, crop trellising, crop thinning and pruning, harvest, data collection, grading and postharvest handling. All of these are important skills students will need to master when managing a vegetable crop research facility or a commercial vegetable farm.

Besides providing students with a ‘hands-on’ experiential learning opportunity, the other high priority objective of the student farm is community food security. The student farm is partnering with Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center in Stillwater, as a source for fresh produce for families in Payne County and OSU students via Pete’s Pantry on campus.

Various types of equipment are required for successful operation of the farm. Some of the equipment is being provided by the university but not all. Great Plains Kubota has graciously agreed to provide a 4WD tractor that will be used in combination with a bedder/mulch layer and transplanter for crop establishment. Over the next few years as needs are identified and funds are made available additional infrastructure and equipment will be added. Anticipated additions include a hoop house range including movable and permanent models to enable extension of the growing season, a fruit orchard, a small fruit planting and a composting facility. Ultimately the incorporation of a small animal component is planned to make the farm more wholistic, sustainable and increase educational opportunities for students.

The addition of the student farm at OSU promises to enhance the educational experience of current and future students majoring in horticulture and other agriculture related disciplines.
