A Legacy of Service By Will Clark

Betty Clark July 29, 1959 - July 28, 2024

The matriarch of our family, Betty Clark, entered into her eternal rest on July 28th from injuries sustained in a car accident. Nothing in life can prepare you for something so sudden like this. Our entire family has been affected in so many ways by her absence. But her absence has revealed something that she started long ago: A Legacy of Service. As you may or may not know, our GP brand motto is “The Brand that Serves”. We believe that service to others is the key to success both internally within our company and most importantly, externally, to our valued customers. When I think about service to others and how we want our customers to be treated, I go back to the pattern of life that my Mom left for our family to follow. In this brief story about her life, I want to tell you about her and how she lived a life of devoted service to others. But I also see this as an opportunity to encourage you. Unexpected pain in our lives often brings an opportunity for growth if we 4

will take advantage of it. So, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to encourage you if that’s where you are today. You may be walking through an unexpected season of suffering in your own life. You may be facing the loss of a loved one, loneliness, depression, chronic physical pain, or a myriad of other things that come our way in this life. I want to encourage you, if that is you today, you can have a Hope that extends far beyond our brief time here on Earth. I’m going to tell you a little about my Mom as it relates to servanthood and how she shaped our lives. But first, I want to give you a background about her heritage and love of ranching.

A LIFE OF RANCHING HERITAGE Mom grew up with a ranching heritage. Mom was born into a ranching family in Casper, Wyoming on July 29, 1959. Johnson Ranches at that time was solely based in SE Wyoming, but as the family began to grow, Mom’s dad, David was growing weary of the Wyoming wind and the winters and decided to GPL Fall/Winter 2024

move his family to Oklahoma. They bought a ranch in Duncan, OK and that’s where Mom grew up. Growing up on a ranch is hard work and she welcomed it. She loved the land and the cows. She enjoyed the views unencumbered by anything that wasn’t created by God Himself. Mom had a deep love for the ranch life. And it just so happened that love was shared by a boy she went to school with named Billy Clark. Mom and Dad were married in 1978 and shortly thereafter moved to Ada and bought some land to start their own dream. I’m quite certain that one of the reasons my parents were happily married for almost 45 years was because they both loved the ranch life. Marriage is so much easier when you have common interests, and they had this one in spades. Dad has said many times over the years that he worked to feed the family and Mom worked to feed the cows. They were a team. Mom was truly the best “ranch hand” there was. I use that term because Mom always used to sarcastically joke that we gave her all of the “grunt work” jobs whenever there was work to be done. That obviously wasn’t always the case, but she was an incredibly hard worker that could work circles around most men. You have to be a hard worker to put in a full day's work in a vocation and come home to ranch work that needs to be done, regardless of keeping a family up and running. Ranching was in her blood and she loved the life.

A LIFE OF RICH HOSPITALITY Mom had a rare gift of hospitality. I use the word gift because it came so naturally to her. But I can go GPL Fall/Winter 2024

further to say that she had the spiritual gift of hospitality. The Bible talks about this spiritual gift of hospitality in 1 Peter 4:9-10 “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” How do you know if someone has a spiritual gift of hospitality? I think we can ask a few questions and find out. 1. Do they welcome others into their home? 2. Do they enjoy hosting others into their home in order to encourage them or pour into their lives? 3. Are they able to anticipate the needs of others around them intuitively? 4. Do they receive energy and life from helping others in need? If someone you know checks these boxes, they definitely have the spiritual gift of hospitality. Mom absolutely loved to host and cook for others. Cooking was one of her passions and believe me, she was good at it! I said during her memorial service that I have residual effects of her good cooking around my waistline and that’s the truth! I’ve been to many a potluck dinner where I was unsure about the other “mystery dishes” and just picked my Mom’s food because I knew I could count on it! If you’ve eaten at her table in the past, you know exactly what I’m talking about. When Mom cooked for a holiday or some kind of get together, there were days of planning and thought that went into it. She would wake up ridiculously early to start prepping for a meal that wasn’t until that evening. She ALWAYS, ALWAYS cooked plenty of food. There was never a chance that anyone that ate at her table went away hungry unless they were sick or picky. Mom didn’t care for picky eaters either. Dad always said that Mom cooked to

LEGACY CONTINUED... feed an army and that was her intention, to make sure that nobody went away hungry. Anytime there was a chance of an event to be held somewhere, she was the first to open her home and host. I can remember several times where we would have executives from one of the companies we were associated with try and take us out to dinner at some fancy restaurant in OKC or somewhere as an “appreciation” dinner, but instead Mom insisted that they come to the ranch and eat at her table in her home. She enjoyed serving others. She also stepped up and opened her home to some of our friends or relatives growing up who needed a “more than temporary, less than permanent” place to stay for a while. Doing these things wasn’t an inconvenience for her, or a way for her to draw attention to herself. It was simply a way that she could be the “hands and feet of Jesus” to those in her circle. In Luke Chapter 10, there’s a story told about two sisters who interact with Jesus. “Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” The story of these two women is often seen in contrast. You have Martha who is the hard working sister that is so caught up in all of the work preparing the house and the meal that she forgets who she is preparing for! Then, you have Mary who is sometimes portrayed as the sister who doesn’t care about any of the prep, but only cares about paying attention to Jesus. The reason I bring this story up is because there are only a very limited number of people that I’ve ever met in my life that can balance the hard work and prep of hospitality without sacrificing their attitude (like Martha did in the story) or their devotion to the real reason for the hospitality - but Mom did that very well. She served others with a joyful heart and a willing spirit.

A LIFE OF REAL LOVE I can’t write a short summary of my Mom’s life of service without talking about her love and devotion to her 6

LEGACY CONTINUED...

family. When it came to her family, she was always there. I told this story during her memorial service and it fits here too. Mom was ALWAYS willing to step in and do whatever was needed for Dad, Garrett, and myself. But she had nextlevel availability when it came to her grandkids. There was one day that Jane or I couldn’t be at Wyatt’s (our oldest son) pumpkin patch field trip. I think he was 8 years old or something like that. I asked Mom if she could go and stand in for us and she jumped at the opportunity. So she gets to the pumpkin patch and they only take cash to get in and participate in all of the fun. Mom didn’t carry cash very much, so she didn’t have a way to get in. So she takes a check to a local grocery store and tries to cash a check. No dice on cashing an out of town check. She didn’t believe in debit cards so an ATM was out of the question. So she goes to a local bank there (not her bank) and they won’t cash an out of town check either. She then asks the bank if she can setup a savings account for her grandson (Wyatt) and deposit some money into it, then withdraw a little from that. They oblige. And that’s what she did. All in order to make sure she could be there when Wyatt needed her. And that was the story of my childhood with her. She put her career on hold to stay home with Garrett and I until we were 1214 years old to be the Mom she wanted to be. Mom devoted her life to serving my Dad in every area that he needed her. She was his biggest supporter and most definitely biggest encouragement over the years when business was anything but easy. She always had a positive attitude and was looking for silver linings in difficult situations. I’m going to miss being able to talk to Mom on the phone almost every morning. I’m going to miss seeing her enjoyment of cooking and hosting meals for our family and others in need. I’m going to miss seeing her enjoy the sleepovers with the grandkids on the spur of the moment. But, as much as I will miss those things in this life - I know that those things won’t be missed forever. The Bible tells us that we will all be reunited in Heaven when our time on this Earth is over. We are sad that life has separated us for now, but it won’t be that way for long. This is the encouragement that I want to share with you. I believe in a Resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ and He is what gives me a living Hope that this life is not all that there is. He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no one comes to God except through Him” (John 14:6). That is why we can live a life of joy in spite of the separation! We can carry on the life of service, hospitality, and love that Mom so genuinely instilled in us knowing her life created a legacy that extends far beyond her time here on this Earth. Despite how you may feel or the direction your life has gone thus far, your life makes a difference. You get to choose how you will leave an impact on this world. Will it be an impact of positivity and love towards others in need? Will you accept the challenge to be the “hands and feet of Jesus” when called upon? Will you love your family as if this day is your last? My prayer is that you would consider these things in your own life and allow the Lord to make necessary changes if needed. Life is short, take advantage of the time you have.

Be Blessed, Will

SORGHUM MILL CHRISTMAS TREE AND BLACKBERRY FARM Utilizing The Dependability and Power of the Kubota Business Lifestyle

Submitted By Sorghum Mill Farm

Great Plains Edmond customer, John Knight is

the sole-proprietor of the Sorghum Mill Christmas Tree and Blackberry Farm in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he cultivates approximately 45 acres of Christmas trees, 25 acres of landscape trees, and 4 acres of blackberries. Knight’s passion for trees spawned at the early age of twelve. He took after his father who was an arborist his entire life. He started out growing deciduous trees for the pure enjoyment of learning and began his tree farm in 1977. But it was not until 1982 that he planted his first evergreens to be cultured for Christmas trees. At the time, he had little experience with growing evergreens and had only been exposed to Eastern Red Cedar and Austrian Pines that were planted in his mother’s yard. His first rotation consisted of 250 trees, the second year he planted 1,500 seedlings, on the third year 2,500, and has continued to plant more each year. Presently he is planting approximately 6,000 trees per year.

When Knight started decades ago, the land was eroded and damaged from a played-out oil site with abandoned lease roads and no soil retention structures. Through the years, Knight has worked tirelessly to restore the land to a productiveness in which his trees now grow and thrive. Some varieties grown for Christmas trees are Virginia, Scotch, Austrian, Loblolly, and White Pine, as well as Leyland and Blue Ice Cypress. Knight also ships in several thousand imported fir trees to sell each year. In addition to Christmas trees, Sorghum Mill offers a large variety of deciduous trees grown on the farm for spring and fall planting. In June to mid-July, people love coming to the farm and picking their own blackberries. Several thornless varieties are grown fresh and ready for picking. This is another opportunity for families to experience and create lasting memories that they will cherish for years. Every year Sorghum Mill opens its season on the Friday after Thanksgiving for families to come and find the

An Update on Herd Rebuilding By Derrell S. Peel - OSU Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist

The biggest question in the cattle industry contin-

ues to be that of herd rebuilding. Specifically, there are questions regarding the status of the beef cow herd in 2024 and, more importantly, how is the industry setting up for 2025 and beyond. Beef herd expansion involves two components: reduced cow culling and increased heifer retention. Direct measures of the cow herd inventory and replacement heifer inventories are only available in the January 1 USDA-NASS Cattle report, with the next release in late January 2025. In the meantime, it is challenging to determine what is happening in 2024. There is data on beef cow slaughter through the year that does indicate the beef cow herd culling rate. The final rate is usually expressed annually as total annual beef cow slaughter as percent of the January 1 beef cow inventory. The annual beef cow slaughter total will not be available until after the end of the year. In the first 37 weeks of 2024, beef cow slaughter is down 16.3 percent year over year. Monthly beef cow slaughter can be expressed as a percentage of total cattle slaughter. On an annual basis, beef cow slaughter as a percent of total cattle slaughter is 97.5 percent correlated with the annual herd culling rate. A twelve-month moving average of this percentage provides an indication during the year of beef cow herd culling. The blue line in Figure 1 shows this moving average since 1987. The two major cyclical beef herd expansion in the 1990-1996 and 2014-2019 periods shows how beef cow herd slaughter behaves during herd expansion. In the two previous herd rebuilds, beef cow slaughter bottomed in 1992 and in 2016. The moving average reflects the previous twelve months suggesting that beef cow slaughter was at a low in the first year of herd expansion in 18

each of these cycles. Figure 1 indicates that beef cow slaughter is declining currently but has not bottomed and is not yet low enough to indicate herd expansion. Moreover, the rate of beef cow slaughter in 2024, although sharply lower year over year, is not down enough to offset the small bred beef heifer inventory at the beginning of the year. The beef cow herd is likely down year over year in 2024. Figure 1 also contains a similar twelve-month moving average of heifer slaughter as a percentage of total cattle slaughter. Heifer slaughter goes down when heifer retention increases and there is a 72.5 percent correlation (negative) between this slaughter percentage and beef replacement heifer percentage (beef replacement heifers as a percent the beef cow herd inventory). The correlation is strong but less than for cows because heifer slaughter includes more than just beef heifers. Figure 1 shows that the moving average of heifer slaughter also bottoms during herd expansion, typically about a year later than the cow slaughter moving average. In 2024, the twelve-month moving average of the heifer slaughter percentage of total cattle slaughter has not decreased at all thus far. Both of the measures in Figure 1 suggest that there is only minimal indication of industry movement towards herd rebuilding. The beef cow herd will likely be smaller on January 1, 2025 and has very limited potential to do anything other than stabilize and hold steady in 2025.

From Bean Counter to Bean Grower: Embracing Fall and Cover Crops

Zach's Journey

As summer fades and cooler fall temperatures

arrive in central Oklahoma, my backyard garden is transitioning to its next phase. With most of my crops harvested, I’m reflecting on the season—the successes, lessons, and inevitable mistakes that come with being a novice gardener. Fall brings new opportunities: preparing the soil for winter and planting crops suited for cooler weather. Summer's Bounty and Lessons Learned

This summer’s harvest was a mixed bag. My tomatoes and cucumbers exceeded expectations, there was more than I could eat or give away! However, not everything thrived. My corn failed to grow properly, a problem I traced to insufficient soil compaction. Corn needs a solid foundation, and I learned this the hard way. Crowding was another issue. My okra, while healthy, didn’t reach its full size because I planted them too close together. The lesson: plants need space, not just for their roots but also for proper airflow. Gardening, I’ve learned, requires patience and planning—not just action. Preparing for Fall: Cover Crops and Easy Vegetables

With fall here, I’m focusing on two things: sowing cover crops to improve soil health and planting fall vegetables that can thrive in cooler conditions. Though summer crops are winding down, fall is an excellent time for a new round of planting. Cover Crops: The Soil's Best Friend

This year, I’ve come to understand that healthy soil is key to a productive garden. To prepare my raised beds and grow bags for next spring, I’m planting cover crops. Rye and clover are my top choices. Rye grows fast and suppresses weeds, while clover naturally adds nitrogen to the soil. These cover crops will grow through the fall 20

By Zach Harris

and winter, improving the soil structure and providing organic matter when tilled back in come spring. The process is simple: after clearing out the summer plants, I scatter seeds, water them in, and let nature take its course. By spring, my soil will be richer and more ready than ever for planting. Easy Fall Vegetables to Grow

Fall also brings the chance to plant vegetables that thrive in cooler temperatures. This season, I’m focusing on quick, easy crops that will keep my garden producing through the cooler months. • Radishes: A fall favorite, radishes grow quickly and are ready to harvest in just a few weeks. Their peppery crunch is perfect for salads. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are staples in fall gardens. They’re frost-tolerant and can be harvested continuously, making them ideal for my raised beds and grow bags. Potatoes: I’m trying something new this fall—growing potatoes in burlap sacks. The sacks allow for good drainage and easy hilling, which encourages tuber growth. Potatoes are a versatile crop that can handle the cool weather well. Looking Ahead

As fall settles in, I feel both reflective and optimistic. While some of my summer crops didn’t reach their full potential, the lessons I’ve learned about soil health, spacing, and crop care are invaluable. With cover crops protecting my garden and coolseason vegetables filling my beds, I’m excited for what the coming months will bring. Fall is a time for the garden to rest and replenish, just as it is for me. While the garden quiets down for winter, I’ll be busy planning for another productive season next spring.

THE BRANDING IRON GP & THE OSU FARM Follow Up By Josie Hohn

provide the farm a In September, a team of Great Plains employees had to4WD tractor as well the wonderful opportunity to revisit a local partner of our Stillwater location, the OSU Student Farm. The development of this program began in 2022 with the initial planting beginning in Spring of 2023. This farm is an educational resource for OSU students enrolled in the “Small Farm Systems and Technologies” course to have hands-on experience in the day to day operations of a small farm. Additionally, the produce grown at the OSU Student Farm is placed back into the hands of those in the community that deal with food insecurity by being donated to Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center in Stillwater. At Great Plains Kubota, we aim to do our part in giving back and one of the most practical ways we are able to assist programs like the OSU Student Farm is by providing equipment that can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the work being done. Through our Stillwater store, we have been able

We believe that using our resources together as a collective force will lead to more people receiving the assistance they need and ultimately a healthier community. Dr. Justin Moss, Department Head of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, shared that there are exciting plans for the future of the Student Farm that will further their impact in Stillwater, including OSU students. We are grateful for the work they are doing on the frontlines and are excited to see how this partnership grows as the needs of the farm grows. Be on the lookout for further information in the months to come on what is in store for the OSU Student Farm.

- The Deep Water -

Great Plains is excited to announce our

new Taproot program. Taproot is a comprehensive initiative designed to equip our employees and leaders with essential management skills, business acumen and affect the overall personal well being of our employees and the communities they serve. This program underscores our commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development within our organization. The Taproot Training Program is designed to provide our team with the tools and knowledge necessary to excel in management roles. By empowering our team with robust management skills, we not only enhance individual performance but also drive overall organizational success. To kick off the service pillar of this program, our leadership team had the opportunity to volunteer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. We spent our time packaging premade meals to be distributed to local food pantries that would be available to Oklahoma residents above the age of 65. These meals meet recommended health guidelines and are made accessible to most clients by being microwavable. According to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, they “distribute on average 50 million pounds of food each year through its network of more than 1,300 community-based partners in 53 counties in central and western Oklahoma”. Great Plains Kubota’s slogan is to be “The Brand That Serves”,whether that be through serving with those on the front lines or providing equipment that will be utilized to meet the needs of Oklahomans. This volunteer experience was a full circle moment for myself as I previously was the Executive Director of Project 66 Food and Resource Center in Edmond and was blessed with the opportunity to see these meals disbursed to those dealing with food insecurity. Project 66 is 1 of 16 Oklahoma food and resource centers that are supported by the Regional Food Bank’s efforts; namely that they are provided USDA food allotments determined by the number of people each FRC serves. Additionally, these food and resource centers are given access to purchase food from the Regional Food Bank that is affordably priced in comparison to other food sources. For those that purchase from the RFBO, $1 is equivalent to 3 meals. The 16 FRCs also benefit from RFBO programs such as The Summer Feeding Program for school aged students and The Senior Meals in which 24

we were blessed to help prepare. When asked about the greatest challenge the food bank has faced over the past few years, CEO Stacy Dykstra stated that, “The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed the work of the Regional Food Bank. We had to innovate to find ways to distribute food to Oklahomans as the need for food increased significantly. A lot of the safe distribution models that were developed during the pandemic are still in use today by our partners.” One of the procedural changes made during this time gave seniors access to scheduling a time to shop at many pantries as opposed to waiting in line in the elements. Like many other businesses and organizations, the last several years have brought about financial uncertainties for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, but the community has continued to step up to support those struggling with food insecurity. As Great Plains Kubota works towards being more intentionally involved in the communities we are placed in, we challenge you to invest into missions that align with your own. The RFBO is one of many great organizations that exist in Oklahoma that is working to uplift our communities. We were blessed by our time packing meals that will go out to the corners of our state. We look forward to continuing to identify ways we can give back with the resources God has given us while also shaping our leaders to be invested in purposeful work. Join us in being The Brand that Serves.

LOVE HAPPENS There is a light shining brightly in northeast Oklahoma City, just a Robin Khoury Head and Founder of Light Christian Academy

ways down from the zoo. Although it is one of Oklahoma City’s lowest income neighborhoods, there is a lot of hope happening at 3301 N. Martin Luther King Ave. Each week day forty-six students from ages four through seventeen study, sing, and play at Light Christian Academy. Light Christian Academy is a private Christian School that was founded twelve years ago specifically for children of the incarcerated. Although the school now accepts enrollment from children who live in the surrounding neighborhood, most of the students have a parent that has been incarcerated at some time. “As far as we know, we are the only school of our kind in the world,” said Robin Khoury, Founder and Head of Light Christian Academy. One thing that makes the school unique is that all students who attend Light receive scholarships that are funded by individuals, churches, businesses, and Oklahoma tax credits. Students that attend Light Christian Academy, (LCA) , also receive their books, backpacks, school supplies and uniforms free of charge. LCA was born out of a concern for the health and well being of children with incarcerated parents. Mrs. Khoury, a native Oklahoman, had heard statistics about Oklahoma being number one in incarceration of women. As a prison ministry volunteer, her concern trickled down to their children. “Every time a parent is incarcerated, they leave their children behind. If the children are school aged, and the parent is their main caregiver, it is emotionally devastating to the children.

Lastly, what school yard would be complete without a basketball goal. These older LCA students enjoy time for a pic while playing on the court. Photos Submitted: By Light Christian Academy

This causes them to struggle in school. That is why we wanted to have a school that is mindful of the emotional and spiritual healing that children of the incarcerated need.” Light Christian Academy is academically oriented, but also focuses on love, kindness, and Biblical values. Students enjoy small classes of about six each. Once students reach the ninth grade they are able to attend concurrent college classes where they receive college credits while they are still in high school. This is one way that Light Christian Academy is breaking the chains of generational incarceration, as most people in prison do not have higher education. There is a bit of an old school atmosphere at LCA. There are no phones in the classrooms. All students and faculty eat together during one big lunch period and everyone is invited. There are no lunch tickets to buy. Everyone takes choir, music, art and PE as well as the academic subjects. This makes for a very full but satisfying day. If you would like to tour Light Christian Academy you may call the desk at 405-208-7858 and make a reservation to attend a Shine Tour. At a Shine Tour you can hear the Light Christian Academy story, tour the campus, meet and greet students, and enjoy a home cooked meal while being entertained by students. The students at Light Christian Academy shine brightly in spite of some hard things that some have been through. With the help of prayer and a loving atmosphere at the school, they are developing good spiritual, mental, and physical habits. This is preparing them for a life of service to their Savior, families, communities and the world. GPL Fall/Winter 2024

Using Section 179 TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

Are you considering making a purchase before the end

of the year? With cattle prices at all time record highs, this might be the time to upgrade your machinery or invest in machinery that would make you more efficient. At Great Plains Kubota, we are prepared to help you get the equipment you need to make your operation successful. To do this, you need to be preparing now for end of the year purchases. Make a plan to get with your tax accountant as soon as possible to determine if a purchase at this time will benefit you from a tax standpoint. There are many other reasons for making that decision other than tax ones, the primary ones are productivity, cost avoidance, and reliability. For instance, if you are farming or taking care of cattle after working an 8 to 5 job and you need to do something faster and more efficient. Or, maybe you are trying to get over more acres in a shorter amount of time. Perhaps, your equipment fails or needs major repairs. When a piece of equipment gets to a certain age or number of hours it becomes a higher risk for costly repairs, if that machine can be traded for a newer unit before that happens then that cost and time lost will be avoided. Also, the value of the trade-in will be significantly higher if the piece of equipment is still in working order. Agriculture is a business that is driven by the need to do things timely. From getting hay baled at the proper time to getting the crops planted when you need to, most farm and ranch work needs to be done in a timely manner. To do that, producers need equipment that will be reliable to get the work done. There are challenges of operating in today’s environment, each operation needs to take advantage of every opportunity to help make the operation more efficient. In many cases that can be done by operating equipment that has less breakdowns, uses less fuel, and in general keeps the operation moving along. Also, each operation needs to take advantage of the tax rules, such as Section 179 if they have taxable income to deduct from. This is why it is important for each producer to meet with their tax professional early this year. With Section 179 of the Federal Tax Code, an agricultural taxpayer may elect to expense all or part of the cost of any Section 179 property and deduct it in the year the property is placed in service. 28

The total amount you can elect to deduct under section 179 for most property placed in service in tax years beginning in 2023 generally cannot be more than $1,160,000. If you acquire and place in service more than one item of qualifying property during the year, you can allocate the section 179 deduction among the items in any way, as long as the total deduction is not more than $1,160,000. You do not have to claim the full $1,160,000. Under certain circumstances, the general dollar limits on the section 179 deduction may be reduced or increased or there may be additional dollar limits. The general dollar limit is affected by any of the following situations. The cost of your section 179 property placed in service exceeds $2,890,000. You placed in service a sport utility or certain other vehicles, or you are married filing a joint or separate return. The Section 179 deduction limit for 2024 was raised to $1,050,000 with an equipment spending cap of $2,620,000. Using Section 179, you can write off the entire purchase of qualifying equipment up to the deduction limit. This includes both new and used equipment. In addition to equipment purchases, other eligible items may include computers and computer software (off the shelf), business vehicles over 6000 lbs (GVW), breeding livestock, office equipment, etc. Producers can elect to use bonus depreciation as well. Bonus depreciation, which is generally taken after the Section 179 spending cap is reached, will again be offered at 100% on eligible new or used assets acquired in the current year. The potential savings from Section 179 can have a significant impact on your equipment costs. If you’re considering an equipment purchase in the current tax year, you need to consider using this option. For example, a $125,000 tractor coupled with Section 179 can reduce the true cost of the purchase to $81,250, freeing up $43,750 in cash savings. This sample calculation assumes a tax bracket of 35%. Before making any large capital purchases, it’s a good idea to consult with an accountant or tax adviser to ensure deductions are claimed according to the Section 179 code. If a capital purchase would be beneficial to your operation, the staff at Great Plains Kubota would appreciate the opportunity to see how we might be able to serve you. GPL Fall/Winter 2024
