We make a difference. Around 150 people are employed across our social enterprise; more than 70% of whom are disabled military veterans or civilians, whether facing daily challenges due to physical disability, such as amputation, or hidden disability such as post-traumatic stress disorder or learning difficulties. Those working at RBLI’s social enterprise are given the tools to change their own lives.
Since 1964 our social enterprise has been making signage for road and rail along with many other applications. Over that time we have produced thousands of signs, including ones for major British events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Helping hundreds of veterans in the process whist contributing the UK’s infrastructure.

Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company is part of RBLI’s social enterprise providing vital employment to Armed Forces veterans and people with disabilities. The employment we provide gives them the necessary skills and support they need to regain their independence. Their skills and work ethic means we can manufacture high-quality signs and wood-based
products as well as deliver print, mail and fulfilment services, all to an exceptionally high standard. Based at the heart of RBLI’s Kent village and at a second site in Leatherhead, BBMC offers a place where those who have left the Armed Forces and people with disabilities can become genuine industry leaders.

What is a social enterprise? Social enterprises are businesses which trade for a social purpose that reinvest or donate over half their profits to further their social or environmental mission. Social enterprises are an increasingly important part of the UK economy contributing £60 billion and employing nearly 2 million people, with over 100,000 Social enterprises in the UK alone! If there is surplus generated from our commercial activity, it always goes back to support those who need it; whether it is in the factory or supporting veterans across the UK with their journey back into employment, finding suitable accommodation or welfare support.
When you buy from a social enterprise you invest in people people, not profit. 6

Our credentials. We believe that all companies have an important part to play in preserving our environment for now and for future generations, and we understand our duty to have an active strategy to reduce our impact on the environment and promote sustainability.
ZERO LANDFILL
At the Scottish site of our social enterprise, SBMC, we manufacture signs and offer a versatile range of fulfilment services for our customers north of the border. We extensively recycle any excess or waste materials and, where recycling is not feasible, there is a process in place to ensure waste is shredded, bailed and used for low carbon electricity generation.
CIRCULAR ENVIRONMENT
Our print and mail facility in Leatherhead is trialling various methods to recycle the materials we use in our products. We go beyond simply sending waste materials to recycling and now have a successful circular use of banner stands; re-using existing stands or re-purposing them for other projects.
CARBON NEUTRALITY
Environmental awareness is about understanding the impact your organisation has on the environment and taking measured steps to minimise or eradicate it. We are always reviewing our carbon footprint, with our goal to significantly reduce it. Where we are not reasonably able to achieve a zero carbon footprint, we aim offset this through a number of initiatives so that we can become a fully carbon neutral organisation.
ISO ACCREDITATION
We have gained various ISO certifications, including ISO 27001, and ISO 9001, in an effort to maintain our industry-leading reputation, and we are please to announce we have also achieved ISO14001; a framework in place to protect the environment and respond to the ever-changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs. We have received excellent feedback internally and externally on this and we’re extremely proud to have achieved ISO 14001.
CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE
We want our customers to be confident that purchasing from RBLI supports the environment as well as our social enterprise. Our active efforts to understand the effect we have on the world around us has resulted in us embarking on a number of initiatives, with each of our locations leading in different areas.

Tirtha’s story. Tirtha Thapa dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps and joining the British Army. His ambitions were realised when, in 2005, he had the honour of joining the First Gurkha Rifles, beating thousands in the selection process in what was his final attempt. His seven-year service saw him undertake two tours of Afghanistan. It was his second, in 2010, when clearing suspected IEDs in an alleyway, that he was caught in a blast and lost his left leg above the knee.
“BBMC gave me a second chance at life”
He found the process of leaving the forces traumatic, facing loneliness for the first time in his life. But soon after, Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company gave him what he calls his second chance.
Tirtha Sign Maker
Tirtha now works alongside five other Gurkhas – all of who share similar experiences of military service – in BBMC’s sign manufacturing department. Since joining RBLI, Tirtha has become a highly-skilled sign maker and even cycled from RBLI’s Aylesford village to Belgium’s iconic Menin Gate war memorial to raise funds for the charity.

Steve’s story. Steve Hammond joined the 1st battalion of the Welsh Guards in 1977 and served in both Northern Ireland and the Falklands. After an injury sustained whilst serving on the Sir Galahad, he was medically discharged in 1989, aged 40. With only a suitcase and his family he found it hard to find work having returned to his hometown of Shropshire. His lifechanging injuries gave him bleak chances of employment. He told he was unable to have the operation he needed for his injured leg until he was 55, a 15 year wait. Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) invited him for an assessment at their site in Aylesford where they offered him and his family a house, and organised for him to get his operation within 6 weeks. They also offered him a job in Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company which he could start when he had recovered from his operation. Within 12 months he was back in work.
“I now have a purpose in life” Steve Team Leader
His work has involved supervising a team who help create the trackside signage for Network Rail and numerous signs for UK roads each year.

We make a difference. Established in 1919, Royal British Legion Industries is a national charity providing employment, welfare and accommodation support to military veterans, their families and dependants - as well as people with disabilities and those who have been long term unemployed. The charity provides a home to more than 300 veterans and their families through their Aylesford village, including homeless veterans through their emergency accommodation. All veterans living on the village are provided with a tailored welfare support programme to help them regain their independence and overcome challenges caused by physical or mental disability, drug or alcohol dependency, and unemployment. RBLI is currently constructing the Centenary village, a £22m development which will see the charity support more of the country’s most vulnerable veterans every year.
