President’s Welcome to Tunbridge Wells A big welcome to Tunbridge Wells who hugely welcomed us to this new level (Level 5) of Rugby back in September at their ground. That was just before they gave us a bit of a lesson about what being at this level really entails!! And a huge welcome also to our membership. This is going to be a very special and great club day. We have 130 or so attendees at this VP lunch. That is a big Wow in and of itself. It has to be a record! We are honoured to have Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham, who is joining us today and will open the changing room extension. This was built to cater for the growth at the club, most notably in the area of Women and Girls. The “old” changing rooms just couldn’t cope with the increased volume. The facility is built with the needs of Women and Girls in mind but the changing rooms are multi-gender and are versatile enough to be used by anyone. At this point we have to stop and recognise the work put into this. We have 14 people from Thakeham here today who helped us tremendously through this build. They have been superb sponsors and builders and we will be forever indebted for their input. Almost impossible to name everyone but we are most grateful for the guys closest to the project, namely Rob Broughton, the CEO, Peter Youll, Chris Grammer, Dan Medrow and Alan Handley. And not forgetting our own Andy Jones and Barry Wright. Just when you thought you could relax we’re also recognising last year’s U17’s who won the U17’s Sussex League and we are presenting the winning plaque to the team. AND the U15’s will be helping to serve lunch today. AND tomorrow the Minis and Juniors have a Christmas Mash Up, which will include Christmas Carols and Santas Grotto plus fun activities and bottle tombola. There is also the U9 festival running concurrently. Back to todays game. Tunbridge are third at the top the league as I write this and certainly gave us a lot to think about when we met at their ground. They were officially formed as Old Skinners RFC in 1931 before becoming open to all players and renamed to Tunbridge Wells RFC in 1973. Home games are played at St Marks off Frant Road in the town, and it is a quirk of geography that half the pitches sit in Kent whilst the others are in Sussex. The club has embarked on a third season at National Level Five after a period of exceptional success that in four years saw three league promotions and a victory at Twickenham in the 2016 National Intermediate Cup Final. We sit at 9th in the league. This has been tough awakening at this level. However we are slowly climbing from the bottom and picking up the odd win and a few bonus points. We have most of our 2024 fixtures at home which will hopefully lead us to a stronger place after Christmas. It’s going to be a tough one today, lets hear the support! And have a great afternoon. Finally, I would not be doing my job if I didn’t mention Walking Rugby. Monday night now at 6pm. You know it makes sense…

Notes from the Head Coach We welcome high flying Tunbridge Wells to Coolhurst this afternoon with the final fixture before a Christmas break. It has been a tough first half to the season and a steep learning curve for the young Horsham team who have struggled to maintain consistency in selection throughout the first half. Despite this, the gradual accumulation of bonus points and a couple of good wins sees the team in 9th spot going into today. As it happens, other fixtures in the league this afternoon are also very significant at the bottom of the table and a good result today could see some breathing space for Horsham if things go our way In front of us we face a strong and confident Wells side who sit in 4th spot and who gave Horsham our first taste of a heavy defeat in round 3 of the season. A well balanced side who have a strong pack and effective backs, their cohesion is their hallmark which will undoubtedly have added to run of good performances. They suffered a surprisingly heavy defeat to Bracknell the last time out and having not played for 2 weeks, they will no doubt be wanting to rectify this to maintain their push on the top 3 spots. Horsham on the other hand have managed to clear a fair amount of their injury list and are beginning to string together more consistency and better performances. The side today is considerably different to that which played the reverse fixture and hopefully we will give Wells a challenge throughout. We will however be missing talisman Declan Nwachukwu who was injured last wee and we are still awaiting the outcome of how significant the injury is. As disappointing as that is, we welcome back skipper Tom Johnson into the team who has been out since October, and also back into the side since he became a father, Jordan Smith who forms an exciting looking back row combination with Owain McGloughlin and Tyrese Makasi. With the backline blessed with pace and a very physical bench, the boys will be working hard to get a result this afternoon. In front of a record attendance for a VPs lunch, alongside a good band of local supporters, it promises to be a great way to begin the Christmas season which properly kicks off at the club with the M&J Christmas festival tomorrow. We hope you all have a great day and wish you and your families a very Happy and festive Christmas.

English Sparkling Wine made in Sussex WELCOMING VISITORS ALL YEAR ROUND

TODAY’S VISITORS A HISTORY OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS Tunbridge Wells RFC was officially formed as Old Skinners RFC in 1931 before becoming open to all players and renamed in 1973. Home games are played at St Marks off Frant Road in the town, and it is a quirk of geography that half the pitches sit in Kent whilst the others are in Sussex. Under new Chairman Mike Rigby and the club’s Executive Board, the club has a vision “to be a volunteer-based Community Club, which champions sport for players of all age, gender, diversity and ability, enabling them to play to the best of their ability on first class facilities; playing high quality senior rugby at or above London SE Premiership level”. The club is about to embark on a third season at National Level Five after a period of unparalleled success on the pitch that witnessed three promotions in four years and victory at Twickenham (cheered on by 10,000 supporters) in the 2016 National Intermediate Cup Final. Over half of the current First XV squad are home-grown players, most having come through the hugely successful Mini, Junior and Academy sections, with the rest of the senior squad made up of talented and ambitious British and overseas players who have been attracted to the club by its success. The club runs three senior Saturday teams catering for those wishing to play both “serious” and “social” rugby, plus a thriving Veterans squad. Last year saw two players – flanker Mike Hathaway and outside half Frank Reynolds – don the Kent jersey, whilst both Chaz Spence and Nick Doherty have played for the county side in recent times. The path of players like Hathaway is a blueprint for what the club is looking to achieve in that he started at the club as a mini rugby player, then moved through all the age groups before returning from university to eventually captain the First XV and represent Kent. The club have been running Girls-Only Rugby (year 7 and above) since 2014 with considerable success. The Under 15s reached the 2018 National semifinals & the Under 18s won every Kent Competition, Cup & League in 2019. This has not come easily as rugby must compete with many other activities including Cadets, Dancing, Horse Riding and other sports, but the current 60 girls work really hard to give rugby its time because they get more than just a sport – they get a team of mates around them; they get to play a physical sport safely and there are no size/shape restrictions as everyone can play

somewhere. The club welcomes everyone to give it a go and that includes school-age+ ladies! The Junior section is the bedrock of the club with over 750 registered players from under 6s to Under 18s. This includes in excess of 50 players from Under 16-Under 18 which makes up the Colts. This age group also feeds the Academy geared towards nurturing boys into future 1st XV players for years to come. The Academy is at the heartbeat of the club and the challenge it faces are the same as many sports – keeping the next generation interested in playing either elite or social rugby. To do this the club is proud of its “one club” ethos, and with this in mind coaches have gone out into the school community at both at Primary and Secondary level. For 2019/20 the club is seeking to grow the youth membership (within the confines of space, and to assist in this it has tied up with local schools to gain access to all-weather pitches); to strengthen and deepen the senior squads; to invest further in the club’s assets (pitches, playing and clubhouse) and in an increasingly “professional” era in all aspects, to grow its commercial partnerships. The upcoming Rugby World Cup should also increase exposure to the sport across all media and social channels, which provides significant opportunities for clubs such as Tunbridge Wells.

Regional 1 South Central Saturday 2nd December 2023 Hammersmith & Fulham 8-9 Horsham Report by Nick Stocker Over recent years, Horsham and H&F have faced off on several occasions and with both teams having been promoted into Regional 1 SE on account of winning their respective leagues, this meeting proved to be yet another exciting instalment befitting of recent matches between the two clubs. Both teams have had different fortunes in the league with H&F seemingly able to gain consistency in selection whereas Horsham have only recently started to see the early season injuries begin to clear. Resultantly, both teams recognised the respective threats posed by each other and in Horsham’s case, the opportunity to secure a win on the road was a realistic target. The start certainly proved to be the case with Horsham taking the game straight to H&F and following an impressive drive from a penalty at lineout, Jack Osgood scored a try that was well converted by Henry Warwick to take a 7-0 lead. This was short lived however as H&F went through the phases and following an effective switch in the direction of play saw a line break that was well finished by the dangerous backs. With the try unconverted, the score had moved to 5-7 after 5 minutes. The pattern of the first half now began to emerge. H&F playing an expansive offloading game designed to bring their exciting backs into play, whilst Horsham began to focus on the territorial game. H&F however proved more effective in the first quarter with Horsham granting too much space and in doing so H&F became dangerous. On one such attack, full back Henry Warwick was yellow carded for a high tackle as the attacking player slipped and this extra space gave H&F the invitation to score two converted tries on 11 and 16 minutes to take the score to 17-7 for the home side. The score was pegged back to 17-12 when Declan Nwachukwu put pressure on the kick off and on retaining possession of the ball, dotted down out wide for a try that went unconverted. On 21 minutes, a mistake under the posts as the ball was offloaded out of the tackle to the opposing number 8 saw a converted try conceded and in doing so H&F had earnt their bonus point try with a quarter of the game gone. 24-12 which is how it stayed until halftime. With the coaches’ message to play more direct and target the speed of the H&F ball, Horsham needed to get on the scoreboard next. Almost from kick-

off, a break by the backs put Declan Nwachukwu into space only for the 2v1 to be spurned, the first of 3 missed opportunities. Horsham began to seize control of the game through a combination of aggressive defence, scrum dominance and direct running, particularly from the forwards. Now playing almost exclusively in H&F’s half, it took until 56 minutes before Horsham scored with a try out wide for Mike Watts which went unconverted. 24-17. Horsham continued to press and, in the process, failed to execute two driving mauls – a particular disappointment considering how effective the first maul that resulted in a try was. This profligacy came back to haunt Horsham as against the run of play, on 69 minutes, a strong carry by the H&F 13 saw a good offload out of the tackle and once the line break had been affected, the dangerous backs then finished the try which went converted. Horsham upped the pace further seeking a try bonus point of their own. Several times, multi phase attack was thwarted through a combination of strong defence but also Horsham impatience as the clock ticked down. On 73 minutes, the 4th try was scored by Marcus Condon, again following multiple phase attack in the H&F 22m and with the try converted, Horsham had pulled themselves back into a position to salvage something from the game. The last 5 minutes saw H&F kick long to close out the game and Horsham went through the phases moving the ball up field. The efforts were considerable by both teams and eventually, when playing in added time, the ball was knocked on by Horsham and with it, a win for H&F. This proved to be a frustrating afternoon for the Horsham coaches and players who felt this match was there for the taking. H&F had by far the better of the first quarter, but Horsham managed to gain the ascendancy after this and wrest control through much of the second half. The problem was once again allowing the opposition to build an early lead, and whilst the preceding match versus Marlborough saw minimal errors, this match was littered with uncharacteristic mistakes that on other days would have seen a good win. The two tries conceded during the yellow card proved to be the decisive lead and shows just how fine the margins are at this level and are yet another harsh lesson that the young side will need to learn. Although frustrating, another 2 bonus points help climb another place in the league table. At the halfway point in the campaign, Horsham have more home games in the second half of the season compared to away fixtures, and will need to convert potential into good wins if they are to keep in contact with teams in mid table. Next up is London Welsh away which will be another tough test for this young side.
