Welcome one and all to the last 1st XV game of the season. It’s been a tough old ride. But before we move on that, a very special welcome to our guests today, the recently crowned Champions of the Regional 1 South Central League, namely Havant RFC. Huge congratulations and we hope you can do similarly well at level 4.
Interestingly we started the season by losing narrowly to them at their grounds on the Coast. A game some thought we should have won on the day. Unfortunately, the rest of the season hasn’t been kind to us and we finish, after today, in the bottom 2 in this league. We can look to some of our core players retiring, to unfortunate injuries and to pure bad luck, but we probably have a season at least back at level 6 to look forward to next season.
Havant RFC, ‘Hav’, was founded in April 1951 and came to the present home, at Hooks Lane, Bedhampton, two years later. The clubhouse, which was built by members of the Club, was opened in 1955 by the Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth. The highlights of the league campaigns were gaining promotion to National League 3 at the end of 1991/92, and then finishing joint top of that league the following season, missing promotion on points difference which would have made the club one of the top twenty clubs in the country! After a difficult period in the second half of the nineties (coincident with the advent of professionalism!), ‘Hav’ halted their slide in 2000/01 and fought their way back into the National Leagues the following season.
Our fate at Horsham awaits us. We could be back in Regional 2 South Central League which was an excellent league to play in. Or there may be reshuffles and we could be in a different league or even survive in the present league. Time will tell.
This afternoon is there to be enjoyed. Have a great time and whatever the result, the future holds yet more surprises for us.
Thank you for being here and supporting. Last season it was an easy task to be here as we played some great rugby. This year has been much tougher. Wherever we end up, we couldn’t do it without your continued and loyal support.
Have a great afternoon!

So, we arrive at the last fixture of the season and welcome league champions Havant and their supporters to Coolhurst to close out what has been a tough, injury laden season at Regional 1 and with it the prospect of relegation back to Regional 2. Whilst the results have definitely not gone our way, the spirit within the team is undiminished and the boys have worked hard over the last weeks to hopefully close out the season in style. We have learnt a lot over the season and regardless of what happens today, this young team will be better for the experience.
Havant on the other hand arrive as Champions having prevailed over perennial contenders Camberley and as they look towards another successful cup run have the small matter of closing out the season. We extend our congratulations on an excellent campaign. With a well balanced side that sees a powerful driving maul and strong running backs, they will undoubtedly want to put on a show to their travelling supporters this afternoon. If Horsham are to get anything from this afternoon, we will need to be on it both physically and mentally from the off. For our part, despite being bottom of the league, we remain locked in a 3 way battle to stave off relegation given that one level 5 club will get a reprieve following Jersey’s demise earlier this season. Whilst it is dependant on 2 other clubs results this afternoon (Bournemouth and Doncaster) all we can do is seek to maximise our performance today and hope that the rugby Gods favour us this afternoon by seeing us get more points than those we are competing with. Given the way that we have performed recently against the likes of Camberley, Bracknell, H&F, all at home, the boys know what is needed and will be giving their best efforts to make it happen. With the final VP’s lunch of the season in attendance today and a hopefully vociferous support, it promises to be a great occasion that fittingly closes out the season.
Finally, today sees our Attack and Backs Coach Richard (Wes) Bell’s last involvement with the 1st team having announced earlier this season that he would be stepping away at the end of the season. Having been involved with the team for the last 12 years, Wes, who models his approach on that of Wayne Smith has become our very own “professor” with his analytical attacking mind helping grow the team’s attacking threat. In that time we have seen several promotions, 10 Sussex Cup triumphs and of course last year’s cup run to Twickenham. Hopefully today the backs will offer him a coaching assist with a perfectly executed attacking move as a fitting way to see him off! On a personal note, he has been the perfect foil for my more robust approach and I have tremendously enjoyed our coaching journey together over the last decade or so. He will of course not go far given his Clubhouse Manager role, but given the occasion, it is proper and right that he gets the public recognition that he rightly deserves.
Regardless of the result, the end of season is always a special day and given the opposition, the potential and hope of a result and the celebratory atmosphere, it promises to be a great afternoon that showcases the best of community rugby. We hope you enjoy your day.

Havant RFC, was founded in April 1951 and came to our present home, at Hooks Lane, Bedhampton, two years later. The clubhouse, which was built by members of the Club, was opened in 1955 by the Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth.
Ten years after its founding, HRFC was running 5 sides. In 1962 Colts were started and there were further extensions to the clubhouse. A new clubhouse was opened at the end of 1975 and in 1993 there were further extensions, and the addition of an all-seater grandstand.
Early milestones in the Club’s playing history were the winning of the Hampshire Cup for the first time in 1974/75 and then, in 1975/76, becoming the first Junior Club to go into the last 16 of the John Player Cup. HRFC has now won the Hampshire Cup 16 times, the last being in season 2007-08.
Havant RFC currently plays at level 5 of the RFU pyramid, in the newly formed Regional 1 South Central.
The highlights of the league campaigns were gaining promotion to National League 3 at the end of 1991/92, and then finishing joint top of that league the following season, missing promotion on points difference which would have made the club one of the top twenty clubs in the country. After a difficult period in the second half of the nineties (coincident with the advent of professionalism!), Havant halted their slide in 2000/01 and fought their way back into the National Leagues the following season. They were immediately relegated, however, with great spirit and determination, bounced straight back at the end of 2003-04 and have managed to maintain National League status ‘comfortably’ since then. 2006-07 was the best year since the 1992-93 campaign! We just managed to ‘survive’ at the end of 2007-08.
The figure in the top half of the Shield is that used in heraldry to represent a Dolphin! The significance to the club of the Dolphin is that the club was founded at a meeting in The Dolphin Hotel in Havant on 27th April 1951. At that time The Dolphin was in West Street in Havant where it had been since the early part of the 19th Century; stagecoaches used it as the principal inn in Havant on the road between Brighton and Portsmouth. In 1958 it was demolished to make way for the West Street Arcade - itself demolished when the Meridian Centre was built and was re-sited in Park Road South. It was pulled down a couple of years ago.
