President’s Welcome to Maidenhead It is with great pleasure we welcome Maidenhead RFC to the club. It is becoming the norm at this level to admit that I really cannot recall playing our opponents. And that’s certainly true for Maidenhead. Our opponents today were formed as a club in 1922 and continued under the name of the traditional Thames Valley Rugby Club until being renamed as Maidenhead in 1965. Like Horsham in recent years they have bounced around the leagues but in and around level 4 to level 6, largely at Level 5. This means a challenge for us as they will be that much more experienced at this level. Similarly to Horsham, Maidenhead are very competitive, because we both have the backing and support of successful Junior Sides, which has constantly proved to be the breeding ground for new players in the senior XVs. Exceptional players at Maidenhead, such as James Haskell, Thom Evans, and Tom Guest have moved on. Similarly for Joe Launchbury and Billy Twelvetrees at Horsham. But we really benefit from the loyalty and talents of so many other excellent young players coming through our youth sides, both male and female. Our first season at this giddy level has been a real challenge and we still await our first win. This is despite highly creditable performances at London Welsh and Havant. But we have been here before. I recall similar stutters as we settled into London 1 a few years ago. Be patient as we get used to these giddy heights. And finally, can I put in yet another plug for our Walking Rugby team. We meet and train on Tuesday nights at 5:00 pm at present. Most of us are 60+ with some even a little older. If you’d like to try it out, come along about 4.45 pm when we currently start our warmup. You’ll be most welcome. Here’s to a very competitive encounter and an enjoyable afternoon!

Notes from the Head Coach Thoughts on the match below We welcome Maidenhead to Horsham this afternoon in what we believe is the first league encounter at 1st XV level between the two clubs. In addition, in a rare opportunity, we also welcome Maidenhead 2nd XV who play our Lions in a throwback to the good old days of club rugby fixtures before the creation of the leagues and in this regard, it promises to be a good rugby day, topped of by the quarter finals of the World Cup. Maidenhead visit us today sitting two league positions above us and 6 league points ahead and in this regard, the pressure is on Horsham to get a result this afternoon. Our visitors have won one of their 5 matches to date - a mightily impressive win over league favourites Camberley in round 2 and this alone shows that they are going to be a highly accomplished team. Indeed, with Will Greenwood on the coaching team, expect the backs in particular to be exciting and formidable opponents. Although they have lost the remaining fixtures to date, the margins of defeat have been close and suggest a team spirit and work ethos that sees them fight for every point. We expect no different this afternoon. As for Horsham, our challenges on the injuries front continue, specifically in the front row where we have had to bring players out of retirement in earlier fixtures. The positive is the return of stalwart Nick Bell who returns following concussion in round 3 and having improved availability in the backs, we are seeing the green shoots of recovery as combinations start to gel. For the Horsham faithful we get to see Dec Nwachukwu back at home for the first time this season and he wasted no time getting on the score sheet with 2 tries against Brighton on his first appearance to date. That said, despite a very positive 1st half showing against Brighton, the second half saw a drop in intensity which resulted in a heavy loss. This level of rugby sees teams play for the full 80, and to secure wins, Horsham will need to learn these lessons quickly and maintain the intensity throughout. That is certainly been the focus of the training sessions over the last few weeks and we are keen to see an improved performance this afternoon. Finally, in what is his final home appearance before he goes travelling, Joe Blake takes the field having played his 50th match for the 1st XV last time out. Hopefully we will see some of his trademark breaks today and helps the lads secure a win. We wish him safe travels and look forward to welcoming him back in next year. With an abundance of rugby on show, the opportunity to watch two quality games at Coolhurst and the quarter finals to follow, we hope you have an enjoyable afternoon.

Nick Stocker

English Sparkling Wine made in Sussex WELCOMING VISITORS ALL YEAR ROUND

TODAY’S VISITORS A HISTORY OF MAIDENHEAD Thames Valley Rugby Club was founded by R. A. ‘Roy’ Bonberry, in February 1922, who guided its development for the next 60 years. The first opponents were Berkshire Wanderers, who eventually became Reading, followed in turn by Thames Valley becoming Maidenhead in 1965. For the record, the Wanderers won the first game and the next two, before Thames Valley emerged triumphant February 1923, winning 6-3. That first game was played on the Cookham Football Club ground, but soon afterwards Valley’s home pitch was based on the Bray Show Ground, which lay on the flat ground adjacent to the Bray Road, across the fields and The Cut from the current pitches, and this remained the Club’s home until 1926, when they moved to a permanent ground in Kidwells Park. Kidwells remained home for nearly 40 years. Roy Bonberry proved to be an influential figure. Over Christmas 1921, he had organised a game in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Poor Box, on Cookham Moor, this proved so popular that a meeting followed in the Royal Exchange (now Malik’s) in Cookham. Jobs were apportioned to volunteers, and off they set to get things established. Bolstered by the popularity of Maidenhead’s weekend night club scene (there were a number of them between the Bridge and Boulter’s lock) many players found it easy to combine a game in the afternoon with debauchery down by the river. The Club blossomed, started an ‘A ‘ XV and everything went smoothly until Hitler brought things to a standstill in 1939. Bonberry got things going again in 1948, and are currently playing in our 95th year. We face this milestone with a superb clubhouse and a thriving membership, three senior sides and a vast host of youth members and their families. Bonberry himself would have been delighted, for he was still the President in 1983, when he passed away after some 60 years in office, his contribution to the Club will always be remembered through our Bonberry Bar. He had watched over a club that had moved to Braywick in 1966/67, built a proper clubhouse, and was running six and sometimes eight senior XVs every Saturday, together with a Colts XV. Knock-out County cup matches started, Maidenhead won several, and these various competitions led in turn to the formation of a National KO Cup. Called the John Player Cup for some time, its first ever game was played at Braywick, when Wakefield turned up to bring us down to earth with a bang. Undaunted we turned out in following years against Saracens and Harlequins, before things calmed down a little.

The Southern Merit Table was formed and won, and then in 1987 the RFU took heed of the overall demand and shoehorned the whole country into a league structure. Maidenhead were placed firmly in SW1 (South West Division 1), where broadly speaking we have spent most of our time ever since. Promotion to National League 4 in 1989/90 was to last for one season, and we remained in SW1 throughout the next decade, before relegation to SW2 came in 2001/02. Spurred on by this Head-coach Simon Edwards rebuilt the side and their efforts brought success in 2003/04 with a return to SW1. At the time SW1 was oft regarded as the most difficult league in England to win, and in 2004/05, following the promotion, Allan Greene led his men to a creditable 5th place. Then in 2007/08 we dropped into SW2 once again, Simon stepped down to concentrate on his RFU duties, Ricky Khan took over as coach, and with Mark Mueller as skipper, the team bounced straight back into SW1 with some outstanding displays of running rugby. Then a much changed team found this league tough going and we dropped back into SW2E for the 2010-11 season, but with Richie Craig as skipper, we bounced back in style, coming second behind Amersham & Chiltern. Promotion, this time to NL3SW came at the end of the 2011-12 season, but once again the opposition proved too strong for us and we dropped back, this time into SW1E for the 2013-14 season. Russell Bolton took over at the start of the 2015-16 season and carried on the good work, leading the club to be promoted as league champions in 2016/17 to enter the National leagues at level 5. Our first season back at level 5 (South West Premier) saw the squad strengthened both internally from Maidenhead youth players coming through and also with some key positions strengthened to ensure that our see saw relationship at this level was halted. In a league that proved as hard as we had imagined, the coaching staff, back room staff and all the players throughout the senior side stepped up and the squad finished a very credible third in the league. Throughout the very testing times, Maidenhead remained competitive, because we have the backing and support of our hugely successful Youth Division, which has constantly proved to be the breeding ground for new players in the senior XVs. Exceptional men, such as James Haskell, Thom Evans, and Tom Guest move on, but we benefit from the loyalty and talents of so many other excellent young players. But whether they honed their craft at Braywick or elsewhere, all the players turning out for Maidenhead today will be aware that they are part of a great rugby club, and all should doff their scrum caps to honour Roy Bonberry and his friends, who kicked it all off, just 95 years ago.

Regional 1 South Central Saturday 30th September 2023 Brighton 48-19 Horsham Report by Nick Stocker Horsham Men’s 1st XV made the short trip down the M23 to visit Sussex rivals Brighton against whom we have not played a 1st XV league game for over 13 years. The excitement at finally meeting again in league competition ensured that preparation went well in the week and despite the continued travails with front line injuries, Horsham were confident of adding to their points tally and potentially sneaking a win whilst on the road. Brighton have extensive experience at this level and ultimately it was this experience that counted as the good work done in the 1st half was undone as Brighton’s back row in particular and forwards in general wrested control of the match in the second half allowing a talented back line to exploit the space created. Horsham’s pack in particular will rue the error count in promising positions and will need to learn to put several phase of positive play together in order to reap rewards. Brighton’s pack on the other hand reduced their own error count in the second half which allowed field position to be converted to points and with it a comfortable win in the end. Despite the final result, there were numerous positives to take from the game, not least the first half performance which saw a back and forth game with Horsham taking the lead on 3 occasions and in doing so asking questions of Brighton. Two tries by the returning Declan Nwachukwu and a further try from Joe Blake, two of which were converted, all in the first 30 minutes certainly provided confidence that a bonus point would be secured at the very least. Unfortunately, in the second half, time and again opportunities were squandered which at this level will come back to hurt you. Brighton did exactly that and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Head of Rugby Nick Stocker commented - “our young pack are finding the rhythm of the league a challenge at the moment. When we secured good field position and possession, we could not back this up through a combination of a misfiring lineout, and a lack of physicality at the breakdown. The first half however shows what can be done as Brighton certainly felt the pressure as demonstrated by Dec’s first try which was a product of defensive line speed and Joe Blake’s try which was a function of accurate aggressive phase rugby in the opposition 22m. The team continues to learn and we are progressing on all fronts, with the next challenge to put together an 80 minute performance.”
