22nd March 2025 Kick Off 3.00pm — 2024/25 Season Regional 1 South Central
A big welcome back to old friends Camberley. We’ve yet to show a victory against them in this league but now would be the right time to make a start. We’re second from bottom and could use 5 points if we can get it.
We really should reflect on the 6 Nations at the weekend. The performance of England was superb down in Cardiff. It was hard luck on the Welsh that Borthwick had planned the type of onslaught not often seen in the Six Nations. We started with two early tries but with a couple of reposts from the Welsh, one ultimately disallowed, there was no sign of what was to come. By the end we seemed to score at will! The new guys Roebuck and Pollock plus the relatively new guys like Cunningham South and Freeman all helped themselves to scores. Ably marshalled by the other new guy Fin Smith. But let’s not forget the contribution of the “Veterans”, Elliot Daly, Alex Mitchell, George Ford with his late run off the bench and the not so ancient Marcus Smith who showed up as a very capable full-back. I could go on further into the forwards but they were superb as a team and the combination of the two brothers Tom and Ben Curry was outstanding. And it seems everyone wants to see Itoje as captain for the Lions tour to Australia.
Unfortunately, in the end, we were pipped at the post by France but this is our highest placing in this tournament in 5 years. Big congratulations to the French. They were superb. (And let’s not forget we actually beat them….)
Camberley Rugby Football Club was founded in 1931 and played its first game at Watchetts Recreation Ground in October of that year. The club affiliated to the Surrey Rugby Football Union in 1933 and, like most other local teams, disbanded in September 1939. During the Second World War, the recreation ground was used to grow potatoes and it was not until the autumn of 1947 that club was able to resume. Initially Camberley R.F.C. had use of the cricket pavilion as tenants of the cricket club, but constructed their own clubhouse in 1970. In March 1973, the first team won the Surrey Cup.
Well, if we could pull off a win today against what is always such a very strong side, we could emulate ourselves from last year against Havant, and maybe yes, create another miracle. Who knows… Fingers crossed.
And just to re-iterate once more, we’re recruiting for Walking Rugby. You can be any age above 18, Female or Male and you don’t even need experience of playing Rugby. Just turn up at 5.45 on a Monday night and we’ll gladly lead you through it.
Have a great afternoon everybody.
Alan Fisher President, Horsham RUFC
It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Minty—known formally as Dave Murray—a beloved friend, devoted family man, and a cornerstone of our community. From the moment you met him, Minty’s warmth and generosity were unmistakable. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, as I experienced firsthand when I was new to the village (Southwater). His invitation to join him at the local pub, The Cock Inn, showed the kind of man he was: open, friendly, and always ready to share his time.
Minty had a vibrant spirit, always wearing a smile—and his iconic shorts— no matter the weather. His hospitality was unparalleled, regularly hosting dinner parties with his dear wife, Nanci, where laughter flowed as freely as the wine, and the food was always exceptional. Their gatherings were more than just meals; they were celebrations of friendship and joy.
As an avid rugby supporter and a valued member of Horsham Rugby Club, Minty’s love for the game was infectious. He took great pride in supporting his son Cameron at Dorking Rugby Club and was a true team player both on and off the field. His dedication to his family—Nanci, Poppy, and Cameron—was evident in every aspect of his life, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Minty’s passing leaves a void that can never truly be filled. Taken far too early, he will be remembered for his kindness, his humour, and his unique ability to bring people together. He was, and always will be, a legend among us—a man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the communities he touched.
Rest in peace, Minty. You will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Camberley Rugby Football Club was formed in 1931, closed during the war years and reformed for the 1947/8 season. Watchetts Recreation Ground has always been the home of the club and it is believed that it shared the distinction with Bath of being the only clubs in the National Leagues that played rugby on a public park when at National levels.
The club had no firm base until it obtained planning permission to construct a club house in 1970 at Watchetts Recreation Ground, Park Road, Camberley.
Prior to the commencement of the league structure in 1987, Camberley’s greatest success on the field of play was the winning of the Surrey Cup in 1973. Camberley was very successful in the very early days of the Leagues reaching the dizzy heights of National 2 (Level 3) within the first 10 years and following normalisation when many other clubs caught up.
The club was also a founder member of the Thames Valley Mini & Junior group as one of the first in the region to introduce mini and junior rugby in 1973/74 season, they held their first tournament in 1975 and it remains the largest single group within the club boasting a large membership of boys and girls ranging in age from 5 to 18. Colts rugby was introduced a couple of years earlier and it was at this time that the club’s main strength as a family club became established.
Camberley’s women’s team was formed in the early 90’s and in those early days were very successful in producing several leading players for county, area and England. It is good to see a former Camberley girl, Alex Matthews, playing for the Red Roses in the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, and being named as the women’s World XV flanker. This enthusiasm has returned and we are pleased to see our girls and women’s section growing rapidly at Camberley.
