A big hello to Canterbury today who join us in what is a new league for us this season. Canterbury 1’s play in the National League 2 East. Today we host their second team. Personally, I can’t recall playing Canterbury at any level before today. So a big, big welcome also.
We started the season last week with a home game against Gravesend. We led for most of the match but unfortunately had the game wrenched from us in the last few minutes. To end up with one of those most strange of Rugby results, a draw….
After the desolation of the First World War, the 1920s saw a resurgence of sporting and social activity. Rugby was one of the sports that benefitted from this burst of energy and Canterbury was one of the hundreds of clubs that emerged nationwide.
In 1947, brothers Philip and Thomas Wacher bought the Merton Lane ground. They then bought more land to the south where the club now has its second pitch. The Wachers then leased the land to the club on favourable terms.
In recent times they played Level 4 and rose over the years, and in the 2018/19 season they defeated Chester in a play-off game in front of the largest crowd ever seen at Canterbury to reach National Division One
As we discovered in our recent placings, the step up proved difficult. Unfortunately relegation from Division One in 2020 coincided with the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic which was to bring rugby to a complete halt. It was an unexpected end to a period in which the club had grown considerably both with rugby and within the local community.
In recent times Canterbury have played their rugby in National League 2, with their second team playing in our league, Regional 2 SE. Their history over the last 5-10 years is speckled by the advent of Covid as with all clubs.
And I’m going to close out today in my usual fashion, with an appeal for players to join our Walking Rugby group on a Monday evening. We assemble at 5.45 pm and wind up at 7, playing on the AGP. This is fun and almost a return to your youth, don’t miss out. There is a league now, which is in its first season. We are especially looking for ladies at this time, but all will be very welcome.
