President’s Welcome to Beckenham RFC

A huge welcome please for our old friends at Beckenham. The Last time we played Beckenham we were on our way (or so we thought at the time) to Nirvana. The next two seasons turned out to be the most difficult I can remember. But also, very notable. Who can forget going to Twickenham for the Papa John’s Pizza Cup and the noise we managed to generate with 5000 spectators from ourselves and Northampton. Or indeed beating the league champions at the end of the season (Havant) and waiting in anguish for the outcome of the league adjustments to see if we stayed up. And the joy of just pipping it to stay up another season.

Alas only to fall at the end of the following season. However here we are and so far, the rugby has been very exciting. We have had already a match abandoned, two draws and a truly (and literally) smashing game against Sutton and Epsom. They were massive and kept coming but our boys played so we well and defended like Trojans.

Welcome Beckenham to Horsham once more. This is a tough and talented league as you have no doubt also discovered. But we are aware of your capabilities after many games with you in the past, we know your pedigree, and we know we are in for a real tussle this afternoon.

For the benefit of those who are new to Beckenham. Their Club was formed in 1894. By 1907 the club regularly fielded three sides. In 1927 the present grounds were purchased, and members erected a temporary wooden clubhouse on the site. In 1929 the grandstand was built and the following year (1930) a permanent clubhouse was erected. In the great storm of 1987, the clubhouse was almost destroyed by a falling 40-foot poplar tree which narrowly missed. (Strangely ’87 is the year I joined Horsham RFC, having moved from Northwich in Cheshire…no less…)

Whatever the outcome today, and indeed the rest of the season, we want to thank people from all parts of the club. From the Committee, through all teams and age grades and to those supporters who show up each week. Thank you for your interest and involvement. Whatever the outcome for any of our teams, we do it for the love of Rugby first and foremost. Proud to be a part of the Green Army that is Horsham RUFC, and to be a part of the wider rugby community in Sussex, the UK, and the rest of the world.

And once more a call for all to come to Walking Rugby on a Monday evening. 5.45pm on the AGP pitch. Old, Young, Ladies, Gentlemen, Props, Full Backs, whatever. Come and join us, its so much fun!!

Whether visitor or member, enjoy the game today. It will be a good one.

Alan

PS. Sad news in, as I write this. John Price passed away this week. I’m afraid I have no details more than this. John was The Man of the club for many years. Chairman, President, even the guy who swept the floors, if someone else forgot! He was a real club man and will be missed, especially at the forthcoming VP Christmas lunch.
