President’s Welcome to Marlborough Marlborough has to be the furthest club that we get to play in this league. 92 miles away by my sat nav! Fortunately today they come to us but we’ll have to repay the trip later in the season. Like us they have had a slow start to the season and sit nestled with a few of us at the less desirable end of the Regional 1 South Central division. There is no doubt that coming into this division has been a tough ride and our two latest matches with Camberley and Bracknell showed this in spades. Bracknell limited us to 3 points on the day and did their scoring in the second half. Quite a defensive display. Camberley were fast and abrasive. BUT we gathered a bonus point at Camberley and scored more points against them than any other team this season. No mean feat! Add to that very close games at Havant and against London Welsh and you realise this has not been as awkward a start as you might think. Marlborough was one of the founding clubs of the RFU, with their formation at around 1868 as the Marlborough Nomads. This seems to be a stable time for them as their subsequent history is somewhat chequered (their words, not mine). This team then comprised of masters and ex pupils from Marlborough College and army personnel from the local army camps. Most of their rugby was played in London, despite the distance! In 1911 they amalgamated with Rosslyn Park. in 1930 a Marlborough RFC reformed and played up to the second World War. In 1934 the team played on the Marlborough Common for the first time, their base being the Sun Inn. And after another hiatus, once again they re-formed in 1968. Still playing on Marlborough Common, at that time changing and showering was done at St. John’s School, Cherry Orchard. When the leagues first started MRFC was in Dorset & Wilts Division 2 and have moved around the leagues. Like us they now reside at Level 5. I’m afraid today we need to say a rather sad farewell to a stalwart of the club. Eric Chamberlain was a real club man and will be missed. Sadly he passed away a few weeks ago after a long period of illness. There is a special piece on him and his contribution to the club elsewhere in this programme. Eric was the epitome of a club volunteer**. I hope he and his family won’t mind if I take a moment to promote our continual search for volunteers**. If you have a special skill or you have some spare time or you just want to be involved, come and talk. The club is run, top to bottom by volunteers**, and we always need more. And finally, both sides could use a win today so we expect a tough game. We wouldn’t want it any other way. Have a great day! **PS. It has been said that being asked to Volunteer seems a big ask to some. And we don’t want to push people away with the wrong or misleading dialogue. We are trying to moderate the language and its impact and will start to adopt “Helping Out” as an alternate way of attracting people to the plethora of opportunities to, well, …….. help out!

Notes from the Head Coach We welcome Marlborough today for another first encounter between the teams in league rugby, and in doing so, play another team like ourselves, that are newly promoted into the league. Alongside Hammersmith & Fulham, we all made the step up last season, with Marlborough losing only once in the season to St Austell who we beat in that memorable Cup semi final back in May. Marlborough have, like Horsham had a tough opening to the league, but unlike Horsham have managed to secure 3 wins which sees them sit in 9th place in the league ahead of their visit today. Like Horsham they arrive on the back of a run of defeats with the most recent defeat being at the hands of Bracknell who similarly beat Horsham the preceding week. They will be keen to arrest this form and we will no doubt see their notoriously large pack supported with some mazy runners look to assert their physicality this afternoon. Horsham for our part suffered a heavy defeat away to Camberley. The scoreline however doesn’t tell the whole story. In losing we also scored the most points against Camberley this season and became the first team to score 4 tries against them at home. Indeed, but for 3 lapses of concentration it is arguable that we could have secured 2 points in what are in our opinion the league favourites this year. Part of this was built on the improving physicality that we are seeing from the Horsham forwards which is allowing the backs to begin to play. We certainly need this to continue today so that we take the opportunity to get a win that will, if results go our way see us climb the table. Simply put, the stakes are high for this afternoon and the boys will need to be on their mettle to get the result today. We hope you have a good afternoon.

Nick Stocker

English Sparkling Wine made in Sussex WELCOMING VISITORS ALL YEAR ROUND

TODAY’S VISITORS A HISTORY OF MARLBOROUGH Rugby in Marlborough has had a chequered history. From being one of the founding clubs of the RFU (the world’s first National Rugby organisation) to the current day on The Common, rugby and Marlborough have never been far apart. In 1868 Marlborough was represented in the rugby world as Marlborough Nomads. This team comprised of masters and ex pupils from Marlborough College and army personnel from the local army camps at Tidworth and the surrounding area. A relationship which is still happening today and is as strong as ever. Unfortunately, the team played all its rugby at various grounds in the London Area such as Richmond, Blackheath and Ravenscourt Park, as they had no base. Marlborough Nomads were a well-known, and respected Metropolitan Club. In 1911 they amalgamated with Rosslyn Park. The Nomads had several English Internationals through their existence. Including Alfred St. George Hamersley, he was also Instrumental in the formation of the RFU. He was their first secretary; he was also a major influence in creating the rules of rugby football. Based on the rules of Marlborough College football code where no hacking was allowed. (This was a practice adopted by schools at this time). He introduced rugby football to the youth of South Island of New Zealand and also into British Columbia in Canada, and brought about Vancouver RFC, he was also the Rugby President of British Colombia. In 2015 Marlborough College have named a sports field after him and it is called The “Hamersley” Field. He was a solicitor and barrister in London, as was many of those who was at the original Pal Mall Restaurant In 1872 when the RFU was formed. This is probably why the rugby community refers to rugby laws rather than rules. At this meeting the average age was reported to be 23. In 1930 Marlborough RFC reformed and played up to the Second World War. They first played on a field at the top of Savernake Hill near to Savernake Forest. In 1934 the team played on the Marlborough Common for the first time, adjacent to “Free’s Avenue”. Their base was the Sun Inn, where they showered and entertained the visiting teams. Marlborough RFC (reformed in 1967) had a similar situation to the Nomads, up until the year 2000 when a club house was finally secured on Marlborough Common. It was funded by a substantial Lottery Grant, Sport England, the RFU plus local fund-raising efforts. At that the time changing and showering was done at St. John’s School, Cherry Orchard. Home and visiting teams would play and drive the 1 mile, to and from the common in all weathers and then entertain at a small cricket pavilion at Elcot-Lane.

Back in 1978, there were merit tables based on fixtures, but no formal league as there is today. Marlborough RFC suggested to the county that there is a place for lower teams to participate in a league system! Howard Cripps club secretary sent out a round robin to all the clubs that Marlborough were in contact with to see if there was any interest in leagues? One reply of many was made to Howard Cripps our secretary from Vickers RFC (Supermarine), they were in favour and interested as the letter shows:The idea was put forward by George Haddock former Captain of Marlborough RFC. After defeat in one of the Dorset & Wilts cup rounds, he suggested at a meeting in Elcot Lane, that if there was a league competition in rugby like football then there would be more interest and motivation for the players. At the time rugby fixtures were a fixed tradition throughout all the clubs and all the levels of rugby. Before leagues Marlborough R.F.C always played Didcot, in the first match of the season, alternating home and away in successive seasons. The latter did a lot of hard work to get various people on board to break traditions. The rest is History! George’s “Acorn” blossomed into leagues for all? The original letter from Vickers(Supermarine) can be found on our web site. When the league’s first started MRFC was put in Dorset & Wilts Division 2, through the 90’s the club progressed to the Southern Counties, and then a lot of players retired and through mis management in 2007/8 the team were demoted to Division 3 North. During this time Marlborough forged links with the Army Camp at Tidworth ( one of the largest army garrison’s in the UK) and since then the club progressed up the leagues and are now one league off National League at level 6. The quality of rugby and type rugby played now is greatly influenced by the Pacific Island Coaches and Pacific Island players from Fiji and Tonga. Our current coaches are Elisi Vunipola related to the current English stars and Tonga International Taufa’ao Filise from Tonga and Cardiff Blues. At club level, Elisi played for Sanyo, ACT Brumbies, Caerphilly RFC and Bay of Plenty. Taufa’ao Filise was picked up by the Blues (Super Rugby) for their 2005 Super Rugby campaign, and then signed for Bath Rugby on a year contract following that. After his season with Bath, Taufa’ao moved to Cardiff Blues and was part of the Cardiff team that won the 2008–09 Anglo-Welsh Cup and the 2009–10 European Challenge Cup. On December 19, 2015 he became the Cardiff Blues most capped player with 183 first class appearances. During his 13 years in Cardiff, Taufa’ao amassed 255 appearances, with 9 tries and became a cult figure earning the nickname “The king of Tonga”. His final game for the club was the European Rugby Challenge Cup final in Bilbao, which Cardiff won 31-30.

Regional 1 South Central Saturday 4th November 2023 Bracknell 26-3 Horsham Report by Nick Stocker In what proved to be the definitive game of two halves, Horsham frustrated a powerful Bracknell outfit, fresh with new signings from Rams of Nat 1 for much of the match, eventually running out of steam when defending up the significant slope late in the second half. Bracknell showed their intent from the start with strong carries that faltered on Horsham’s defence. With Horsham’s kicking game turned the big Bracknell outfit, territory was gained and when Bracknell fell offside at the ruck, Oli Chennell dispatched the penalty with ease for a 0-3 lead. The pattern of play had been set, with Horsham defence proving a tough nut to crack and the kicking game performing well. As the half drew to a close, Horsham looked increasingly confident and made in roads into the Bracknell half although could not take advantage of this. As the second half started, Bracknell, now playing down the slope gained a little more traction and scored their first try on 50 minutes. They then scored two rapid tries on 62 and 65 minutes when Horsham had suffered a yellow card for cynical play. This phase proved to be the difference and with two opportunities at driving mauls being missed, Horsham then allowed Bracknell to score a long range bonus point try at the death following a misplaced kick. Head of Rugby was disappointed that Horsham had capitulated in the last quarter - “having defended well and frustrated a powerful and confident team, we are frustrated that we didn’t capitalise on the opportunities we had to score and potentially gain some reward from this trip. To allow them to get a 5th point at the death was similarly frustrating. On the bright side, we did look very powerful in the scrum where Bracknell struggled which is something to work on ahead of some tough fixtures in the coming weeks.

Farewell to Ez Ez started at the club watching his son Gareth and continued on to watching his grandchildren as they grew. He followed their respective teams around the South East, popping up in his silver Mercedes at many an away game Eric or Ez as he was known to most of the club, was a real Character who would stop and chat to all at the club, from the Chairman to the kids. When he adopted the care of the grounds he spent hour upon hour researching the relevant topics and bringing the expertise he learned to take the grasses up to a very high standard. He was something of a rebel and did things his way. He wasn’t a man for titles and did the job the way he saw it. The lush nature of our fields here is a testament to him and his methods. One of life’s characters who will be sorely missed. Farewell Ez. Family would like to thank the members for all the support we have had and also anyone that helped Dad in his work over the time he looked after the pitches.
