A big welcome to Brighton RFC. Good to be playing again this season. Like us, a slow start this year, though our close win last week versus Hammersmith & Fulham has projected us up the table! This will be a tough one. But then a local derby always is!
Brighton is one of the oldest clubs in the country, formed in 1868, 3 years ahead of the formation of the RFU. There is even conjecture that the club itself (before being a rugby club) was formed in 1791! Ancient indeed. Obviously one of the Founder clubs with the RFU.
Current Harlequins outside-half Marcus Smith, a Brighton College alumnus, played junior rugby at Brighton. Also, ex-England head coach, Eddie Jones retained a strong affection for the town after his Japan side trained at Brighton College ahead of their fabulous World Cup victory over South Africa in 2015 at the Amex football stadium. Following this Jones held England training camps at the school. And Walking Rugby. 5,45pm on Mondays. Still recruiting!
I’ve had one or two ear-wiggings from various folks, that they’re not being notified of the lunches. So can I remind everyone that we will have a sit-down lunch before every 1st team home match. This has been our practice for a few years now and will continue to be so. We will endeavour to get a reminder to you each week with timing updates and menus. Generally, it will commence at 1pm. If you are not getting the invite or have a friend who is not being contacted, please let Wendy know at the bar.
I hope you all have a great afternoon and that the game lives up to its usual excitement.
Best Wishes
Alan Fisher President, Horsham RUFC
We welcome old foes Brighton for the 5th match of the season and with it the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with old friends who have played together in County sides or indeed as in the case of some who take the field today as former club mates.
Brighton have had the better of recent exchanges ever since our promotion to level 5. This season however they are yet to get their first win of the campaign and as such visit us in an unfamiliar situation. They have however played a number of the top sides in Jersey and CS Stags and as such are not to be underestimated at all. Boasting a strong set piece and some very handy backs, they will undoubtedly be fired up to perform today in the first instalment of this Sussex derby. Watch out for Marcus Condon - former Horsham 1st XV player - who will be playing in the centres this afternoon along with dangerous full back and skipper Max Morris amongst many threats.
For our part, the recent performance against Hammersmith & Fulham was the most complete to date with a largely dominant display despite a number of changes to the side. Playing with confidence, we posed threats throughout and secured a welldeserved first win in the road in this league. With availability good ahead of this match, we had some difficult selection decisions and hope that we can replicate the performance last time out. With the backs in particular starting to function well, and our big runners linking well, it promises to be a good match this afternoon.

Horsham secured their first win of the season away at Hammersmith & Fulham which sees them climb four places to eighth in a tightly contested lower end of the table in Regional 1 South Central.
Man of the match Tom Sanders opened the scoring, and added his second try on 18 minutes following a well-executed lineout move and break from Tom Whittaker.
Hammersmith & Fulham responded with two interception tries, as Horsham were probably a little guilty of over playing, and the home side took an 18-10 lead into half-time.
Tom Johnson pegged back the hosts with a penalty followed by a try from a driving maul finished by Pat Viol, which was well converted by Johnson, to take a narrow 18-20 lead after 65 minutes and set up a thrilling finish.
Hammersmith & Fulham then scored a converted try after a poor exit initially from the visitors, but there was still time for Horsham to respond with a converted try from Johnson after a driving maul had been moved to the backs to secure a dramatic last-minute victory.
A delighted Horsham Head Coach, Nick Stocker, said after the game: “A good five points earned this afternoon with the most pleasing aspect being the control exerted throughout. Hammers are a dangerous side with good runners, but we contained them throughout.
We were perhaps a little guilty of overplaying in the first half which granted them two intercepted tries and a lead at halftime but when we started to control possession and territory, we looked the most likely to go on and win.
We have had several performances such as this in the past, but not managed to go on and secure a win. To do so is a very positive next step especially given the disruption of a few injuries throughout.
Performance wise, our backs were excellent with threats throughout. This was possible due to a well-functioning set piece with the lineout in particular going well. Freddie at hooker and Jacob in the second row to the fore here.
In the backs, notable performances from Joe Blake, Tom Whittaker, TJ and Josh gave space for our young wingers to cause damage.
Consequently, with two good tries this afternoon, Tom Sanders was awarded man of the match - a great performance in only his 2nd league match since graduating from the colts last year.
We have a break next week which will give the bodies time to recover ahead of a mouthwatering local derby against Brighton where we hope a big crowd will be in attendance.”

To establish the beginnings of the Club, we must look first at the pioneering days of football. There were originally twelve to thirty players on each side and forward rushes that contributed to some rather nasty encounters. Hacking, tripping, charging and scragging were all within the recognised codes as played in most parts of the country. At Brighton, it was the practice to field 12 or 15 players aside. The number was determined before the start of each game according to the particular codes and laws, which the two captains decided to adhere to. A single goal scored during the game was superior to any number of tries (at goal) or touchdowns. Brighton decided to play under the codes and laws of Rugby College and of course later the Rugby Football Union (26th January 1871) affiliation to the RFU eliminated the need to find a team that played the game according to the Rugby College laws.
In 1852, the Brighton Schools Provincial Club was formed and all games were played under the Rugby modified laws at the Sussex County Cricket Club. The earliest documented fixture played in Brighton was in 1867 when Lancing College, Schools of Brighton and Brighton College played each other.
The administration headquarters of the Brighton Football Club was Waters Wine Bar at the bottom of Spring Street (The Prince Arthur? Another old haunt of Brighton Rugby Club) where committee meetings were held over a dock glass of Sherry and emergency meetings were known to be held under the nearest convenient lamppost, (nothing changes!).
The Clubs fixture list included games against Lancing, Hurst and Brighton Colleges, Sussex County Hospital and Tonbridge School. Games were also played against Worthing who would only consent to play Rugby at Brighton if the Brighton Club agreed to play soccer at Worthing! That season saw Worthing beat Brighton on their own ground by a last minute goal to nil. The match at Brighton under RFUs laws, had a very different outcome - Brighton produced the amazing score of 7 goals and 23 tries to Worthing’s nil!
As well as producing many distinguished former players, Brighton can boast that it invented the Great Rugby Touring industry! In December 1902 we became the first English Rugby Club to tour France under the Rugby Union regulations. Our gallant Club met Stade Francais at the Parc de St Cloud (now Parc de Princes), and were defeated 9-3. The following year, Brighton had its revenge, and beat Stade by one try to nil. For that game, our playing shirts were White with the Brighton Crest and the socks were Black. But, in the same year, A.S.Anderson joined the Club from London Scottish, and introduced the Scarlet socks as worn by London Scottish and Scotland. In his day, the games were played at Preston Park, and Mr G.Short, of the Crown and Anchor Hotel provided the clubrooms and changing facilities.
Since those early days, a lot has happened to Brighton. We have many ground changes, including the traumatic uprooting of our Club from Horsdean to our present, luxurious facilities at Waterhall. But it is those pioneering times that capture the imagination most - and as more information comes to light, a greater comprehension of the history of our Club and the game of Rugby will be established.
