20th-century

environmental

historians

have

highlighted

that

colonization has accelerated the ecological destruction of the Murray River to satisfy social and economic needs.

Today, the prosperity of Yarrawonga is mainly associated with Lake Mulwala as an integral part of the town’s tourism industry. While the lake appears natural, it has undergone constant modifications, resulting in significant environmental issues such as water pollution and substantial loss of native vegetation along Lake Mulwala, destroying the Murray river downstream.

The thesis proposes the regeneration of threatened wetland plant species along Yarrawonga foreshore, which also functions as a natural water filtration system along the lake edge. The project also provides the town, which relies on tourism, with additional tourist infrastructure: an extended jetty into Lake Mulwala that includes a naturally filtered

interventions will function as public recreation spaces that promote the reflection and observation of the environmental conditions.

The architectural response to the fluctuating water levels and lake conditions seek to create awareness on the impact of anthropogenic modifications that are causing the death of the Murray River. By revisiting the past, and present, the thesis proposal investigates a new ecological model to progress forward for the future of Yarrawonga.

MODIFICATION

The proposed site used to be covered with dense foreshore vegetation, a part of an extensive red gum forest cleared in the 1930s to construct Lake Mulwala and the Yarrawonga Weir.

RIVER REGULATION

Today, the foreshore is constantly modified to expand the lake, resulting in substantial loss of vegetation, causing urban-run offs damaging the river. The thesis seeks to investigate an intervention between land and water, questioning the role of architecture in mitigating the environmental damages of the Murray River, and to generate a new ecological model for Yarrawonga.

The sacrificial platform will be submerged during flood events due to the oversupply levels of irrigation water, causing the lookout tower to be “detached”; seemingly “floating” away from the foreshore. Urban Sanctuary Barnhouse explores beyond the external skin of architecture, allowing the curation of inner spaces to evoke emotional values, memories, and moments. The residence was designed to create a home that resonates with the identity of the family where they could comfortably work, play, and live together. W ith the idea of working from home becoming more prevalent, there might be a bigger desire in the future for people to have their ‘home-life’ and ‘work-life’ combined. Thus, the project seeks to provide opportunities for the two to be integrated but separated. Through the integration of green spaces in the form of internal garden courtyards, thresholds are created to balance the atmosphere, enhancing the family’s interaction in the two distinct inventive ways of bringing the external natural landscapes indoors, activating the senses of living with the outdoors internally. The project also explores the expression of a combined living and community facility that could possibly be integrated within our residential typology. The residential design proposal promotes social participation within the community in supporting the creation of a richer fabric in the neighbourhood of our inner suburbs.

The focused client for the project is a family of four who seeks refuge from the busy city lifestyle, in a space where they could interact with family and friends. The project explores the integration of outdoor living, indoors, and overall creating a balanced ‘home-life’ and ‘work-life’ environment for the family. W ith the site located between the residential and commercial estates, there is a potential for the family to expand their family grocery business onsite. The site proposal explores the opportunities to integrate community interactions, in response to the public flow along Dickinsons Reserve.

CROSS SECTION The cross section depicts the hierarchy of public, semi-public to the family’s private spaces. The idea of transparency in the building provides visual connection whilst at the same time facilitating privacy through the implementation of vertical timber screenings along the shophouse front. The internal courtyard serves to blur the boundary between outdoor and indoor, creating a threshold that separates the residence private spaces from the shophouse front.



LONG SECTION The longitudinal section focuses on the key space of the home: the family living area. The high floor to ceiling height in the sunken movie and social area provides the living spaces an overall emphasis through its volume and verticality. This is contrasted to a more intimate space in the reading area above, providing extra privacy for the family on the upper floors.

Wall of Revival explores the intimate works of architecture that reveal the human dimensions of contemporary life. Engaging in the experiential and phenomenological implications of architecture, a functional and emotional brief is developed within the context of an imagined Kyoto. The project serves to empower a chosen marginalized community that has been constantly defamed and streetcar racing group (Midnight Club) and the obsessors of the automobile of Japan. Through

the

exploration

of

spatial

experience,

environment, technology, and materiality, the architecture seeks to revitalize the misfits as they emerge together for a passion that can never be morally accepted by society.

// a healing infrastructure for car devotees and Midnight Club members to create a path of connection with the mutual passion and obsession for the automobile. The Midnight Club members have been constantly defamed by the Japanese society due to a fatal accident in 1999, without understanding the underlying truth. However, the misfits will emerge together for those who feel, grief and suffer for a passion that can never be morally accepted by society.

URBAN CORAL URBAN CORAL is a modular façade system that responds to issues of glaring and solar heat gain in an urban district. The brief for this design studio project is to design a responsive external skin façade environment. The project focuses on the techniques of computational design, using Grasshopper and Rhinoceros, to produce a flexible design outcome that can be adapted in relation to different weather and climatic aspects.

The design targets high-rise buildings in Melbourne CBD that are often exposed to solar radiation that resulted in a demand of cooling system causing high overall building cost as well as producing dangerous amount of carbon emissions to the environment. The Ernst & Young office located on Exhibition Street was selected as the proposed building due to its facades facing 4 different climatic conditions. The design strategy is to generate variation of modular shading, based on the level of exposure to solar radiation and sunlight on a surface. The facade system aims to be interchangeable and can be readily incorporated in different locations and orientations to minimise the intensity of such climatic aspects acting on a building.

An algorithm was generated using image sampling, which assigns the respective canopy length of the modules to the levels of solar exposure acting on the façade. The modules are then tested in the LadyBug plug-in and a variation of canopy lengths are selected based on its effectiveness as a sun-shading device. A final test of the facade was conducted in LadyBug plug-in after the application of the Urban Coral module panels on Ernst & Young office building. The solar exposure visual analysis recorded the effectiveness of the design proposal which shows a reduction of solar exposure on the north façade. The design proposal successfully responds to solar heat gain by efficiently shading the surface from sunlight and providing thermal comfort for occupants with controlled natural light.


The processes of analog and digital fabrication techniques were combined to construct the physical models of the modules. Computational design tools were integrated such as laser cutting, 3D printing and vacuum forming to ensure precise details and quality, so that the physical models will be a close representation of the design proposal. The application of the URBAN CORAL façade on the Ernst & Young building were tested through 3D printing to visualise the overall outlook of the façade and the effects of the modules as a shading device for the building. The success of the project relies on the incorporation of both the analog and digital fabrication methods to demonstrate and test out the strategies and algorithmic options generated through computational design.

Construction Design studio is based on the structural case study of the Western BACE facility, a hub for business development, designed by Six Degrees Architects. The axonometric construction drawing aims to reveal the construction details, processes, building elements and materials abstracted from a range of construction documentation. The construction drawing provides comprehensive insight and understanding of the different stages and order of construction, feasibility and structure choices, and its relationships with the design intentions of the facility.

Post-Industrial Landscapes explores the pervasive world of digital domain and the potential for a new architectural and

narrative

realm.

In

this

design

studio,

we

delve

into the dense urban area of Hong Kong, with the brief of designing a collaged city with urban components re-imagined,

re-constructed

and

re-interpreted.

In collaboration with Jayden Yip, Jia Jin and Cassandra Seow, we intensively explored the city of Hong Kong, with visits of major exhibitions depicting cultural identities, and created an envisioned model region of Hong Kong, not based on conventional architectural understanding but by incorporating strategies of abstraction in design and urban scenography. W ithin the projects, I was involved in gathering and refining 3D scanned data of the city, and constructing a collaged virtual reality urban environment in Unity and 3Ds Max. Towards the end of this design programme, we curated an exhibition at OSAGE gallery presenting an artistic insight of the urban cultural production in conversation with Hong Kong artists and architects, breaking through the norms of architectural representation into a narrative architectural realm.

URBAN SCANNING W ith the guidance from Robert Schermuly, from John Barrett & Associates, we explored the use of the Faro Focus 3D laser scanner to capture the urban context of Sham Shui Po district, which is the densest and most vibrant district in Hong Kong. We focused on scanning the urban context of Pei Ho Street in Sham Shui Po, which contains rich heritage of cultural architecture and the old street markets, with a diverse mix of migrants in various living conditions of cage homes, subdivided flats and public housing estates. The idea behind the scenography is to capture the cultural urban scene of Hong Kong and urban elements within this dense district. The 3D scanned data of Pei Ho Street, Sham Shui Po, will be gathered and collected as point clouds in AutoDesk ReCap, where we explore the possibilities of turning these data into a narrative architectural realm of a collaged city representing our take on Hong Kong’s urban context.

The first architectural scenography piece is intended to focus on the narrative of Hong Kong’s citizens struggles through

city, being blinded by bright colours and lights ‘supposedly’ guiding their reality when it is the factor that hinders the

vision

of

a

perceivable

future.

Viewing it from afar prevents you from capturing the details in the smaller bright coloured urban scene, surrounding you with
