BLAIZE OF GLORY WHAT’S ON
AFTER 50 YEARS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WHICH HAS INCLUDED DUETING WITH ROBBIE WILLIAMS, TOMMY BLAIZE IS EMBARKING ON HIS FIRST MAJOR SOLO TOUR
Page 10
HI
TOMMY!
What are you most looking forward to about going on this tour? For me, it’s about being in intimate venues and having that direct relationship with the audience. People are used to hearing me sing on a
And what do you think the challenges will be? Well… for a start there are a lot of dates! And it’s my first ever solo UK tour. I’ve been on the road with a lot of artists over the years and done hundreds of my own shows. But this will be a schedule like none other. Honestly though, I can’t wait. How do you feel about meeting your fans? It’s a genuine pleasure to have the chance to meet people who have parted with their hard-earned money to come and see me perform. I’ll be hanging around after every show for a chat with whoever wants to come and say ‘hi’! We know that it’ll be an evening of music and chat, can you share one of your stories with us? That would be telling… but let’s just say I’ve been in the music business for 50 years and been singing on Strictly for more than 20 years, so I may have a tale or two!
What do you think makes Strictly so special? It’s totally unique in how it brings different people together. It’s something you can watch with your 10-year-old or your nan. There’s dance, music, entertainment, sparkly outfits, lights, glamour, challenge, jeopardy, elimination. It’s the full package in terms of Saturday night entertainment. And everybody has an opinion on what they’re seeing so it gets people talking. You’ve also worked with some of the world’s greatest artists, any particular favourites, and why? I was lucky enough to be asked by Robbie Williams if I would join him on his ‘Swings Both Ways’ world tour. It was a special one as I would come out to the front of the stage every night and duet with him. I also got to play some keys too – which can be rare. He’s a lovely bloke and made us all feel very involved and included. After the tour, what’s next for you? Sleep!
Tommy Blaize is at The Apex on Wednesday 19 June. See www.theapex.co.uk or ring 01284 758000 for tickets. Or visit The Apex box office in Charter Square Bury St Edmunds.

Thanks for agreeing to speak to us, and congratulations on another successful series as the lead singer of Strictly Come Dancing. Now you are off on your first major solo tour, what can fans expect? This tour will be different to anything I’ve ever done before. As well as singing (of course!), people don’t know that I also love to play piano, guitar, occasionally a bit of ukelele, and anything I can get my hands on really. I’m a soul, blues and jazz lover, so there’ll be lots of those style songs, some songs I’ve sung on Strictly, maybe a couple from my album. I’ll also be telling one or two stories from my career, taking questions from the audience. It’s going to be relaxed, fun and hopefully we’ll get the audience involved in a couple of numbers too.
Saturday night on the telly in their living rooms, but don’t get to see and hear the real me doing my thing, live and direct. That relationship you build with an audience over the course of a show is a special thing; they get to come into your world for the evening.

Connections… BURY ST EDMUNDS
Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw is constantly looking at ways to improve their connections with the people they wish to serve. Their mission statement focuses on reducing isolation and helping people stay involved with their communities through FREE rides.
C
ELEBRATING OVER 5 YEARS of offering this service to all age groups, and with the support of Abbeycroft Leisure and West Suffolk University, they are now also delivering meals to people’s homes. The main aim is to provide a freshly made two course meal for people who live on their own and give them the opportunity to enjoy a chat on their doorstep; to open up conversation and to enquire how they are. This co-ordinated effort sees Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw volunteers (otherwise known as Chatty Chums & Controllers) make initial telephone calls to explain the meal offer; outlining the day and time of delivery and having a conversation to establish any extra needs and the offer of a rickshaw ride in the future. Numbers and food allergies are then relayed to the college who undertake the cooking with their students.
On the day, scheduled rickshaws will collect and deliver the food to those in need across the whole of Bury St Edmunds. The success of this project has seen numbers grow from the original target of 50 people every 6 weeks to around 80 meals with even greater numbers involved at Christmas. The rickshaw riders take great pleasure in chatting to people on their doorstep and connecting them with other established organisations for further support. If you know someone who could benefit from rickshaw rides or rickshaw meals at home, call 01284 339449.

HE POPULARITY AND SUCCESS of our work is reflected in our statistics. Just under 1200 people undertook our tours in 2023, a mixture of visitors from abroad, UK holidaymakers, local residents and schoolchildren. Their feedback regarding content and delivery was totally complimentary. Then came our Ghostly and Macabre Walk Tours with us exceeding last year’s total before Christmas - these finish in March so make sure you don’t miss out. They make ideal social gatherings for families or work colleagues. Coinciding with the release of Apple TV’s drama, ‘Masters of the Air’, we have put together special walking tours which show how Bury St Edmunds was affected during World War II. In conjunction with our colleagues at The Guildhall, we have included a visit to the Royal Observer Corps Operations Room. Some of these tours start at 3.30 pm on Tuesdays with
the added incentive of being able to benefit from ‘free after three’ parking. The uptake of these tours has been incredible with sold out tours until April, so to meet demand, more tours are being added. It’s a tour that has grabbed the attention of people with American connections and local people who are curious about how the town’s buildings were put to other uses at this time and how life and culture changed during the ‘American invasion’. In April, we commence the new season of daily tours and will also be providing the chance to experience specially themed tours for those who want something different. We are anticipating even more people on tours this year so make sure you find out more and book early at www. burystedmundstourguides.org. Finally, we are extremely proud to have been nominated for VisitEngland’s Tourism Superstar award and to have reached the nation’s top ten finalists. Whatever the outcome, it is a great advertisement and puts Bury on the tourism map. If you are willing to support us, please cast your votes and encourage family and friends wherever their location to do likewise because the winners are decided by the highest number of votes. Voting begins midFebruary and details of how to do so will appear at www.visitbritain.org/ working-us/visitenglands-tourismsuperstar-award.
