SPORTS JOURNALIST AND TELEVISION PRESENTER, NED BOULTING RETURNS TO THE AREA, WITH HIS LATEST CELEBRATION OF THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH.
NED DELVES INTO the hidden mysteries of a roll of film from the 1923 Tour de France, that fell into his possession during the Covid pandemic and inspired his latest book, '‘1923: The Mystery of Lot 212 and a Tour de France Obsession’. Part detective story, part murder mystery, part costume drama, part French farce, Ned weaves his own typically ridiculous story into the astonishing discoveries he makes about the hidden world of the 1923 Tour de France.
What was the inspiration behind the writing of your bestselling book ‘1923…’?
“Out of the blue, I was sent a link to an online auction during the winter lockdown of 2020. The lot for sale was a reel of old Pathé footage, incomplete (just to add to the mystery), very fragile and of completely unknown providence. The rest, as they say, was history. And research. Lots of research.”
How did the writing process differ, compared to other books you have written?
“There is no comparison. This book took over my life for the best part of two years. It carved paths into the past, stuff that I unearthed which blew my mind, but it also allowed me to forge friendships, when at last I could get to Belgium and France and explore the story to its conclusion.”
When did you decide that your book could be transferred to the stage?
“I wanted to know how the book would be received first. In the back of my mind, I feared that I might have gone mad, and that people wouldn’t come with me. Thankfully, I already sense a kinship among readers of the book, so adapting it for the stage will allow for a different appreciation of the story.”
What can we expect from the Marginal Mystery Tour: 1923 And All That?
“I think that it will appeal to an even wider audience. Because the story spends a lot of time in 1923, I assume no previous knowledge of the race. I want to bring everyone, regardless of whether you’ve read the book or not, with me on the same wonderful, fascinated journey. But, and I can’t stress this enough, there will be jokes about David Millar, Mark Cavendish and Chris Boardman. I can’t NOT do that!”
Is there a particular scene, or character, people should look out for in the show?
“I’m still working on it. But I have not ruled out the return of my worldfamous Peter Sagan impression, last used on stage to devastating effect in 2018. Connoisseurs will realise that over the course of six weeks on the road it went from bad to worse to unrecognisable. But I have had a few years to work on it. It could be back!”
ADAPTING IT FO R THE STAGE WILL ALLOW FOR A DIFFERENT
A one-man stage show must be a difficult and tiring undertaking, how do you prepare for the tour and each performance?
“I go to altitude training camp in Hilly Fields in Lewisham, staggering around for weeks and weeks on end, muttering to myself and trying to make myself laugh about cycling. It’s not easy.”
What do you hope the audience takes away from your show?
“Nothing but love for the greatest race on earth. It’s really very simple. Oh, and a signed copy of 1923. That’s quite important too.”

THE APEX GALLERY HOLDS A RANGE OF EXHIBITIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
BRYAN TRUEMAN - CONTEMPORARY EAST ANGLIAN LANDSCAPES, ABSTRACT PAINTING & HIGH QUALITY PRINTS
From Tuesday 26 Nov–Sunday 22 Dec Artist’s statement:
“All my work begins with a moment observed, suspended in my mind’s eye and later brought to fruition by the physical act of manipulating paint onto canvas or board and exploring all the tools, at my disposal, that facilitate that process.
Some pieces don’t make it to the end and become a “worked” surface to begin the next piece...it’s all a valid and an extremely motivating process that drives me on.
Landscape and Abstract works have a synergy where one feeds the other in the process of exploring markmaking.”
THE GALLERY features works by emerging and established artists, as well as engaging with West Suffolk’s various community art groups, offering them an opportunity to display their work in a professional environment.

JOHN SAUNDERS, Marketing Officer for Bury St Edmunds Town Guides writes:
The Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides were proud to receive a TripAdvisor Travellers’s Choice award, putting them in the top 10% of worldwide tourist attractions. This derives from the published reviews we receive, all of which rate us excellent or very good. These appraisals inspire us and encourage others to tour, thereby putting Bury St Edmunds on the worldwide map and supporting our local economy. For D-Day weekend, we guided over 200 visiting Americans, part of around 500 customers who
have so far enjoyed our wartime tour ‘Masters of the Air’. Tours for groups, schools and dog-lovers have kept our numbers high. There is still time to squeeze in one of our daily tours before the end of October and to book for Masters of the Air tours which have been reintroduced. Our attention then turns to the Ghostly and Macabre season. Last year we received 623 bookings, the highest ever and already people are booking and groups organising their nights’ out. We are in the process of stirring the spirits in readiness for the stories told by the Witchfinder General, the Grey Lady, monks and funereal gentlemen. We have kept our prices at £10 which is great value for 90 minutes of entertainment and fun.
So, the message, as ever, is to book early - all the information you need is at www.burystedmundstourguides.org
