Welcome to this edition of What’s on West Suffolk also known as WOWS. And that’s exactly what I think when I look at some of the spectacular leisure and culture activities that we have taking place across the area.

For all the fun it brings, it’s also important which is why we invest and work with partners to deliver a great many of these things.

Why is it so important? Well, it’s about those things that we choose to enjoy together in our spare time and that lift our mental and physical health. And it's one of the things that makes West Suffolk a great place to visit but an even better place to live and work.

A quick mention of Mutiny in Colour at Moyse’s Hall Museum, the National Horseracing Museum and Haverhill Arts Centre. If you haven’t been yet, it ends on 1 October so get your skates on.

There’s lots more to look forward to with the Sci-Fi and Action exhibition, Peter and the Wolf Live and so much more happening across West Suffolk, as you can discover for yourselves in the pages ahead.

Enjoy it and have fun.

MASTERS

of the air

VISIT THE REAL-LIFE LOCATIONS of New TV Series ‘Masters of The Air’ in Bury St Edmunds.

A new TV series starring BAFTA-Winning Best Actor Austin Butler will be coming to Apple TV+ soon based on Donald L. Miller’s non-fiction book 'Masters of The Air' and produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

The book and TV series tells the true story of the bomber boys of the USAAF 8th Air Force, known as the Mighty Eighth, who brought the war to Hitler's doorstep.

During WWII, the East of England became home to thousands of American air force personnel – over 350,000 in total. The Friendly Invasion, as it was dubbed, introduced our rural

area to the big band music of Glenn Miller, peanut butter, chewing gum, nylons, donuts, jitterbugging, Coca Cola and much more.

But did you know Bury St Edmunds has a part in this historic story?

ROUGHAM CONTROL TOWER

AVIATION MUSEUM

RAF Bury St Edmunds became home to the 94th Bomb Group from 15 June 1943 to 12 December 1945 flying the B-17 Flying Fortress. From Bury St Edmunds (now Rougham Airfield), the men of the 94th Bomb Group, mentioned in the Master’s of The Air book, flew more than 300 missions. This year is the 80th anniversary of the 94th Bomb Group arriving in the UK.

You can visit Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum which is home to a fascinating collection of memorabilia from the 94th Bomb Group (and the 47th Bombardment Group and the 322nd Bomb Group who were there before) including photos, artefacts, uniforms, letters, and photographs, which tell the story of the Bury St Edmunds base and the US personnel stationed there, many donated by their families.

With a view from the top of the control tower and the sound of 40s music by such legends as The Glenn Miller Band (The Glenn Miller Ensemble played at the air base during WWII), you can imagine the deep roar of the engines and the sound of the propellers of the B17 flying fortresses as you look around the museum.

The museum is lovingly taken care of by volunteers in memory of all those who served there and is open every Sunday, from April to October. Entry is FREE but donations welcome.

THE WORLD WAR II ROYAL OBSERVER CORPS CONTROL CENTRE

You can visit the WWII ROC Control Centre at Bury St Edmunds Guildhall – the only surviving ROC centre in the country.

From there, the Royal Observer Corps protected the skies of Suffolk, relaying

vital messages during WWII to crews at local air bases including Rougham and Lavenham.

Open Days are held regularly and Tours of Bury St Edmunds Guildhall in Guildhall Street are available by appointment.

THE APPLEBY ROSE GARDEN IN THE ABBEY GARDENS

When John Tate Appleby from Arkansas arrived by train to the dark and rainy platform at Cockfield railway station in Suffolk one evening in March 1945, the war in Europe was all but over.

So, during the seven months that he spent in Suffolk, John travelled around East Anglia, mainly by bicycle, fell in love with Suffolk and the result was a book, ‘Suffolk Summer’. He donated

his royalties from the book to fund The Abbey Gardens Rose Garden, previously an orchard, as a lasting memorial to the brave young men who lost their lives so far from their homeland.

The garden has over 400 rose bushes and a beautiful bench made from the wing of a USAAF B17 Flying Fortress. There's also a stone monument in memory of the 94th Bomb Group. Unveiled in 1977, the monument is dedicated to those Americans ‘who gave their lives during World War II’.

Did you know?

• The Corn Exchange, now a stunning Wetherspoons pub on Abbeygate Street, was a favourite dance spot for GI's based at Bury St Edmunds and Lavenham.

• The Athenaeum was canteen during WWII and served almost a million and a half servicemen and women until it closed in 1945!

• Academy Award winning actor Jimmy Stewart ordered trucks of Greene King lager every week for the thirsty air crews of the 453rd Bombardment Group stationed at Old Buckenham in Norfolk.

• The Flight of Peace sculpture featuring a B17 Flying Fortress, commissioned by Bury in Bloom, on the Lady Miriam Way roundabout commemorates the US Air Force’s arrival at Rougham Airfield.

• The servicemen of the 487th Bomb Group based at Lavenham Airfield (also mentioned in the Masters of The Air book) called The Swan their local pub and left their signature on the wall there. Rickshaw

DID YOU KNOW? … RICKSHAW RIDES ARE FREE

IT’S BEEN A DELIGHTFUL TIME this summer, transporting people around our town to see the Abbey Gardens and the Hidden Gardens in Bury St Edmunds and West Stow - helping people see the delights of our green fingered friends.

And as the warmth of the summer months fade, the pleasure of giving rickshaw rides continue. The team now have 5 fully operational rickshaws providing environmentally friendly rides for passengers, cargo (food & goods), along with our specialised wheelchairfriendly rickshaw.

As our days get shorter and the cold creeps in, we add blankets and canopies to keep the outside a joy to be in.

Our special trips to see the Christmas lights and market stalls by rickshaw in the evenings will be available from mid-November until 22nd December.

So, if you’re not getting out give the rickshaw a shout; 01284 339449.

Remember, rides are FREE as Bury Rickshaw is entirely run by volunteers, so do give us a call!

“I recently read a book by Adrian Bell (Martin Bell’s father) who had observed and written in the Times Newspaper a column every month on the wonders of nature we have on our doorstep. He recognised the value of seeing, smelling, and observing the things we grow for our pleasure. It is one of the reasons the rickshaw rides are so successful because both the passengers and volunteer riders benefit from the everchanging seasons.”

OUR HORIZON IS BROADER

JOHN SAUNDERS, MARKETING OFFICER FOR BURY TOWN GUIDES WRITES:

ANOTHER GOOD SUMMER season will soon give way to new opportunities on our guided tours. Daily tours run until the end of October so there is still time to book but Halloween weekend is on the horizon and the commencement of our ghostly and macabre tours.

Last year 623 people booked and many others were disappointed because we sold out so this year we will be adding some extra dates. These are great nights of learning and laughter

with guides entering into the spirit (no pun intended) dressed in their spooky characters. Children under 14 are not permitted because of the adult nature of the tours.

At £10 per person these represent excellent value and an occasion of fun for families, friends or workmates.

An exciting initiative between the Guides and the Guildhall will highlight the time that the American forces were stationed within the community during the Second World War. This will cover their lifestyle, key buildings and the

social relationships that existed and will culminate in a visit to the Guildhall and Britain’s only surviving Royal Observer Corps Operations Room.

Information about this and all tours can be found at www.burystedmundstourguides.org.

CHRISTMAS

at arc

AS THE NIGHTS begin to get shorter and the temperature starts to drop, the arc is gearing up for an array of winter festivities!

With Halloween quickly approaching, the fun needn’t stop with summer. Expect plenty of opportunities to win treats (not tricks) for arc customers, and keep your eyes peeled for meet and greets with some spooky friends.

Due to popular demand, the cosy Christmas Cabin will be returning to Charter Square in November ready to open for more Christmas tales, swiftly followed by the spectacular annual light switch-on display on the 16th.

There will be no shortage of magical moments to immerse yourself in this year with traditional Gallopers, late night shopping, live music performances and even an ice rink.

WATERSIDE wonderland

IF YOU’RE LOOKING for a truly magical garden to visit this winter, Fullers Mill in Suffolk will enchant you. The award-winning, waterside wonderland sits on the banks of the River Lark and Culford Stream and is owned and maintained by Perennial, the charity helping people in horticulture. Its plantsman’s collection of unusual shrubs, perennials, marginal plants and woodland offers a fantastic display of colour at this time of year. Come and see what's new including a gravel bed, inspired by Beth Chatto’s garden in Essex, and stay for a warming cuppa and peaceful Christmas shopping for festive cards, gifts, bulbs, plants and local Suffolk-made items. Gardens do wonders for wellbeing, yet those who work with plants, trees, flowers or grass, often need help that nature can’t provide. By visiting Fullers Mill, you can top up your own winter wellbeing and help Perennial to support people in horticulture who make our parks, gardens and green spaces so beautiful.

ICKS-WORTH a look

AUTUMN AT ICKWORTH ESTATE

It’s the ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…’ as John Keats wrote in his Ode to Autumn and certainly, we feel that here at Ickworth Estate as summer turns to autumn in the parkland. In terms of colour, autumn is probably the most spectacular at Ickworth Estate as the trees turn a kaleidoscope of rich reds, oranges and browns which seem to glow in the late afternoon sun.

It’s a great time to make the most of the last warm days with a cycle ride around our multi-use trail. Taking in the further reaches, and often missed parts of the estate, you can bring your own bike or why not hire one from us?

Prices start from £6 for two hours. Open Thursday to Sunday from 10am with last hire at 2pm.

LIGHT NIGHTS RETURN

Light Nights return to Ickworth Estate this November for their fourth year and promise to be bigger and better than ever. With a new route taking in the North Lawn, the front of the Rotunda, East and West Wings and Cedar Meadow will be lit, allowing you to see Ickworth in a new light.

Taking place Friday 10 – Sunday 26 November, tickets start from £9.50 and are on sale now. Brighten up a winter evening by visiting a garden that glows.

CHRISTMAS AT ICKWORTH: A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE

The Georgians were known for their love of the theatre, lavish parties, and get togethers at Christmas which they celebrated for an entire month. Join us between Saturday 2 December –Tuesday 2 January and immerse yourself into the world of the glorious Georgians (think Bridgerton) with luxury and flamboyance as we transform Ickworth into a Night at the Theatre. From the Age of the Theatre to Masquerade Balls, we will bring you the outrageous, excessive and, at times, garish nature of the Georgian’s celebrations.
