For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT NOW: How long have you been playing together?
Colton Burris: For about three and a half years. The first time I ever set foot on a stage was on my 23rd birthday at the Windsock Lounge when Travis was playing. Trav is always willing to share the stage, and he knew I was dying to be a singer. He invited me up to sing couple of songs. I was hooked.
Travis Crow: I have played music since I was 32. Colton joined me a few years ago and we’ve been playing together ever since.
PRESCOTT NOW: What’s the inspiration behind your band’s name?
Colton: We kept it simple!
Travis: We jokingly call ourselves #BB, which stands for Bullsh** Brigade. Some of our friends around town were dubbed The Outlaw Brigade so we wanted our own brigade.
PRESCOTT NOW: How do you connect with your audience?
Colton: By having fun! The audience can tell when you’re having a good time; we just feed
off of each other. Travis and I are always cracking jokes; it can really set a great mood.
Travis: With my songwriting. I do almost all original music, and I feel that if people hear stuff they aren’t familiar with and still have a good time, then it makes it even sweeter.
PRESCOTT NOW: How would you describe your sound?
Colton: It is a fusion of alternative country and Americana. I’m heavily influenced by the Texas country and Red Dirt music scene.
Travis: I happened to be given a voice that sounds rock but a writing style that’s pure country heartache.
PRESCOTT NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Colton: The people I’ve had the pleasure to meet over the past three years, and friendships made.
Travis: We recently opened for Jackson Taylor & The Sinners and we’ve played The Big Sting, which are probably our biggest shows. I’d say being on those big stages with thousands of people staring back is definitely a rush, but I also enjoy the intimate settings.
PRESCOTT NOW: What motivates you?
Colton: The love of music and performing. As a songwriter, it’s great to see how the audience reacts to something you wrote.
Travis: The love of music. I don’t care if there are 4,000 people or four, I’ll play with the same passion and energy.
PRESCOTT NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Colton: My family goes way back in Yavapai County and the Prescott area. My great-great grandmother came to Seligman in the mid-1920s where she worked on the railroad as a Harvey Girl. My great grandfather was the wagon boss at the Diamond A Ranch in Seligman, back then known as the Boquillas. My grandma and great uncles all grew up there. My grandfather has managed the Deep Well ranch in Prescott since 1981.
Travis: I used to come up from Yuma all the time when I was a kid for rodeos and ropings, so I was always familiar with the town and loved it from the start. My parents retired from the Arizona Department of Public safety in 1994, and I came up here as a young man. I moved away several times but I ended back up here in 2018. It’s the best place to be a real estate agent and also a musician. This town appreciates live music!

BUILDING ARIZONA... ONE BLOCK AT A TIME
by John Mason Glen, Ph.D. for the Western Heritage Foundation
“A date which will live in infamy” was what FDR called Dec. 7, 1941. It was, of course, the day the Japanese attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet, anchored at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, plunging America into WWII.
The seven battleships there were either destroyed or damaged, including the USS Arizona; nearly 200 airplanes lost and more than 2,500 casualties.
The Arizona was a Pennsylvania class battleship, commissioned in 1916, and sent to Pearl Harbor in 1940 as part of the Pacific Fleet to deter Japanese expansion. Just after 8 a.m. on Dec. 7, a 1,757-pound armor-piercing bomb struck her just aft of turret No. 2, ripped through three decks and detonated in the magazine, tearing the bow asunder.
The explosion killed 1,177 crew members, including Rear Admiral Issac Kidd and Capt. Van Valkenburgh. The remains of the ship remain in the harbor today.
Japanese losses: 129 lives and 29 aircraft, plus five midget submarines.
How could the battle be so lopsided?
One reason: Takeo Yoshikawa, a Japanese naval officer serving in the consul’s office of the Japanese embassy in Honolulu. He was a spy.
Graduating at the top of his 1933 Eta Jima Military
Academy class, a severe stomach ailment prevented him from completing pilot training, so he opted for naval intelligence.
Under an alias, Yoshikawa arrived on Oahu in March 1941 where he rented an apartment overlooking the naval base from which he could monitor daily activities of the American fleet. Although unaware of the impending air raid, he knew his information and knowledge of the U.S. Navy would be of value to his superiors.
Relations between the Japanese and American had been rocky since the 1890s when America began its imperialistic maneuvers. It escalated in 1931 when Japan, in an expansionistic effort of its own, invaded China. Six years later, a full-scale Sino-Japanese war erupted.
In 1940, Japan invaded French Indochina to obtain the raw materials needed to continue its expansion. The Roosevelt administration countered by reducing exports. In mid-July the Pacific Fleet transferred from San Diego to Oahu. The Japanese saw this as a threat.
They now had two options: continue expansion, acquiring their essential raw materials, essentially ignoring the American proposals and risking war, or accede to the demands of the U.S. and withdraw from China.

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
In today’s housing market, remodeling isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s a strategic decision.
According to the 2025 Remodeling Impact Report from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), homeowners spent a staggering $603 billion on remodeling projects last year. REALTORS® are increasingly at the center of it all, helping clients make smarter choices whether they’re buying, renovating or preparing to sell.
The report highlights a fascinating gap between what brings homeowners joy and what brings a strong return on investment. Adding a new primary bedroom suite or upgrading the kitchen might deliver perfect “joy scores,” but projects like replacing a front door offer far better financial returns.
REALTORS® are uniquely positioned to bridge that gap,
advising homeowners not only on what makes a home feel better but also on what makes it sell better.
When preparing a home for market, REALTORS® most often recommend practical updates: painting the entire home, refreshing individual rooms and installing new roofing. These projects may seem simple, but they can be the difference between a stale listing and a bidding war.
At the same time, REALTORS® have their fingers on the pulse of evolving trends. As kitchen upgrades, bathroom renovations and new roofs gain popularity, REALTORS® guide clients toward investments that boost a home’s appeal both now and years down the line.
REALTORS® also play a key role in helping buyers identify properties with strong investment potential. Whether it’s spotting a home that needs cosmetic updates or one with
layout potential, they help buyers look beyond surface issues to see long-term value. Their market expertise allows them to highlight which renovations are worth the effort — and which may be money traps — helping clients build equity from day one.
Even in a world where housing affordability pressures loom large, the report finds that most remodeling decisions aren’t about cost constraints. Instead, homeowners are tapping into builtup equity and choosing to stay put, investing in the homes they already love. REALTORS® are the trusted advisers who help homeowners weigh personal satisfaction against market realities, ensuring their investments pay off, emotionally and financially.
In an era where every dollar — and every decision — counts, the role of the REALTOR® is more valuable than ever.

submitted by Stories That Matter
Everyone has a story — experiences that shape us, moments that define us. Stories That Matter, under local nonprofit AZ Wordsmith, celebrates storytelling through live events and workshops, fostering connection and community.
Since its founding in September 2023, Stories That Matter has encouraged diverse voices to share their journeys. Its founders, passionate writers, understand storytelling’s power to heal, inspire and unite. As Lee Reeves says, “Cultures are passed on by stories … they are the glue that holds society together.”
The organization hosts storytelling events with themes as varied as life itself — personal triumph, heartache, humor and history. Topics have included My Moment of Truth, I Was Pushed into the Unknown, and A Holiday to Remember
A past event, Fight, Flight or Freeze, featured gripping tales: facing a mountain lion, surviving the Yarnell fire and encountering danger as a merchant marine.
Stories That Matter draws inspiration from NPR’s The Moth. Founding members Janet Hopkins, Sue Favia, Lee Reeves, Steven Kartstein and Matt Santos partnered with the Elks Performing Arts Center’s Crystal Hall to provide a space where true stories unfold before a live audience.
“There’s a little theater,” Reeves says, and Kartstein adds, “You’re telling the story with your whole body… moving those emotions out into the crowd.”
Beyond entertainment, storytelling transforms both teller and listener, offering validation and connection. Kartstein describes it as “borrowed view,” bringing others’ experiences into our own and making them part of us.
In an age of constant digital distractions, storytelling fosters presence — an audience captivated, phones down, emotions laid bare through laughter, tears and gasps.
Stories That Matter also hosts workshops, guiding beginners and experienced storytellers alike in crafting compelling oral narratives.
Whether sharing stories at an event or in daily conversations, storytelling builds understanding and strengthens bonds.
