Milagro’s Story Milagro (miracle) is a Burro that was struck by a vehicle on Old New River Road. Thankfully, the officers on scene chose not to destroy him. Instead, they chose to reach out to a rescue who drove out and picked this bloody boy up. Subsequently, Animal Guardian Network was contacted as his condition was urgent and care needs not being met. The surgeon performed Initial lab work and diagnostics to determine a treatment protocol since he was bleeding from both ears. The results of the X-rays revealed the extent of Milagro’s injuries. What wasn’t expected was to hear that he had an old hollow point bullet lodged in his skull from being shot point blank in the face.

While Milagro underwent castration surgery the surgeon also successfully removed the bullet from his skull. Someone intentionally shot Milagro in the head with the intention of killing him! This unbelievably kind but fearful burro had been brutalized. He had been wild, rounded up, branded, and re-branded, adopted “intact”, dumped in the desert, shot in the head and hit by a car. It’s beyond what a compassionate or reasonable person is able to understand and by no means accept. Now, completely recovered, Milagro will enjoy the rest of his life under the safety of sanctuary refuge within the expansive Burro Canyon at Healing River Ranch.

Prescott’s live music scene is packed with talent, but few bands capture the grit, soul and spirit of true Southern rock quite like South of 40. Formed in 2022 by drummer and band leader DJ Hunt, the group has quickly become a local favorite for their authentic sound, deep musical chemistry and unmistakable energy on stage. Blending blues, rock ’n’ roll and Southern swagger, they honor legends like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd while bringing their own vibrant personality to every performance. In this interview with Prescott NOW, members of South of 40 share how they came together, what defines their sound and the Southern roots behind their name — along with the passion that keeps them performing for the community they love.

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together? DJ Hunt: I kicked things off in 2022, by reaching out to the best musicians — those passionate about the genre who were willing to put in the demanding hours of practice to nail their authentic Southern rock sound. I am a ride-or-die drummer and manage the band, secure gigs and engage with patrons, local bands and venues. Frank Araneo is the lead and slide guitarist and also a lead vocalist. He’s loved Southern rock since he first heard the Allman Brothers in the ‘70s. Larry (LT) Trainor is lead rhythm guitarist and mandolin player. He thrives on playing his intricate riffs and his guitar harmonies with Frank. Kim McKinney is a versatile keyboardist and vocalist with a rich history in the industry — a born entertainer whose vocal arrangements add dimension to the sound. Joe (Dirt) Reid, the bassist, is the rhythmic center. He’s been a sound man and stagehand in Vegas for many years, and his “live-for-now” approach is filled with Southern rock attitude. He runs sound at each venue with some assistance from Frank’s wife, Sue, ensuring the audience experiences the band at its best, while my wife, Lydia, videotapes for marketing. Each band member contributes their voice in both lead and harmony, namely the talents of Frank and Kim. The band invites select vocalists to join them, which have included the voices of Merri McKee, Stephanie Kaiser, Susan Kelly, Greg Paul and Chris Firebaugh.

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound? DJ Hunt: It’s rebellious rock ‘n’ roll mixed with the blues and country sound of the South. It’s gritty, it’s soulful, and it’s all about that feel-good vibe. We consider audience engagement — what makes people dance, sing along or just enjoy. People love the classics like Sweet Home Alabama, One Way Out and Keep Your Hands to Yourself. Frank Araneo: Our emphasis is on the original renditions of the music. Local musicians compliment us on our nocompromise approach to keeping our sound authentic.

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind your band’s name? DJ Hunt: Interstate 40 runs across the entire country from east to west, and since Prescott lies just south of it, we chose South of 40 because it ties us to not only our place on the map but to our musical identity.

Southern rock didn’t just start from one place; it’s unique to the culture of the entire South. And it’s more than just a physical road — I-40 is symbolic of the southern U.S. — rebellious, and wild, and raw, like a road trip full of stories … and plenty of guitars. LT’s wife, Julie, designed our logo and graphics to reflect that journey. Our name had to feel like you just enjoyed some amazing BBQ in Amarillo or had peach cobbler at your grandma’s in Memphis.

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform? Frank Araneo: It starts with a desire to entertain and connect. Our deep admiration of Southern rock and its musicians is a calling that translates into genuine enthusiasm — palpable to audiences. DJ Hunt: Southern rock has an honest quality that resonates with people from ballads to guitar jams to danceable hits. Another motivation is that we grew up listening to these songs, and now we get to bring them to life. Prescott’s music scene as a whole is why we as a band love living and playing here. The holiday light display opened to the public every Friday and Saturday beginning Nov. 28. The park is filled with festive holiday decorations, music and magical light displays. Attendees could enjoy holiday concessions

A Tough Man

Over the last two months my offerings for Prescott NOW magazine have discussed a quintessential “man of the west,” Tom Horn. Horn’s mentor, who taught him most of what he knew was Al Sieber, another true legend of the Old West. Born in Germany in 1843, Sieber arrived in America in 1849, and the family settled in Pennsylvania, where his first employment was as a logger. Like numerous immigrants, he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and fought his way through the campaigns of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg — where he was severely wounded. Unable to continue in the field, he was posted to guard Confederate detainees at the infamous P.O.W. camp at Elmira, N.Y. After the war ended, Sieber found employment with the Central Pacific Railroad, cutting thousands of wooden ties. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, Sieber found himself in Prescott, helping run Curtis Bean’s ranch in

at Camp Verde. Sieber participated in the capture of Apache warrior Geronimo as well as numerous other Indian lawbreakers. Sieber’s life was one of relentless danger. He was a hard man in a hard land. It is alleged that he personally accounted for the death of something close to 75 people, including Confederate soldiers, Commanche, Apache and Kiowa warriors, Comancheros (white miscreants who traded with the Natives), plus two train robbers. He is said to have suffered from no fewer than 128 wounds, ranging from a broken collarbone, bayonet wound to the stomach, several gunshots and even artillery shrapnel. Call for Art

for Yavapai College Peace Summit

April 2026 submitted by Yavapai College

Yavapai College’s Respect Campaign and Justice Institute are co-hosting a Peace Summit Thursday and Friday, April 2 and April 3. This event will create a venue for the different constituencies of the Yavapai College and wider quad cities communities to coalesce around important values such as mutuality, open-mindedness, empathy and courteous conversation. It is the hope that such a gathering will be an effective and cathartic opportunity to employ healing and unity to undermine divisiveness. Yavapai College Prescott Art Gallery, the Respect Campaign and the Justice Institute seek original artwork on the theme of Peace. All accepted work will be displayed in Building 3, room 119 on the Prescott campus, during the two-day Peace Summit. After the Peace Summit, the artwork will travel to a Prescott community gallery to be determined. Paintings, drawings, printmaking, textiles and small sculptures will be considered. All artwork must relate to theme of Peace. The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Brandelyn Andres, YC art history professor. Festival of Trees Donates $27,000 to

HOMELESS RELIEF GROUP submitted by Festival of Trees Prescott The 8th annual Festival of Trees Prescott kicked off the holiday season in Arizona’s Christmas City. The festival (Nov. 18-22, 2025) is a community favorite and a place for friends and family to gather as they get in the holiday spirit. This year we launched the first annual A Christmas City Gala where attendees were able to dine among the trees and wreaths and have the first chance to bid/buy the tree and wreaths. General admission days offered so much: attendees were able to mingle within the forest of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths; some bought trees and wreaths to place in their home or business; people voted on their favorites. They also visited with Santa, enjoyed our cocoa and holiday bar, took photos at our selfie station, made craft kids

ornaments, enjoyed face painting, balloon twisting, there were and many live performances throughout the week. We had more than 3,200 people attend the event at Sam Hill Warehouse and all the trees and wreaths sold! Each year Festival of Trees Prescott chooses a local nonprofit organization to receive the net proceeds from this event. Our 2025 recipient was Coalition for Compassion & Justice, and we were able to donate $27,000 to this wonderful organization! We cannot thank the participating businesses and individuals enough for their support toward this wonderful cause.
