or some, the idea of a good time involves a comfy chair, a cozy fire and a good book. Others are more adventurous. For those who have freedom and the financial assets, ice climbing can be a wonderful way to spend a winter vacation, assuming you don’t have a fear of heights.

This extreme sport gives people the thrill of ascending inclined ice formations, something that requires strength of body and mind.

What began as a necessary part of mountaineering has become a sport of its own. Depending on the location and the type of ice, a climber might be on a frozen flowing waterfall or trying to reach the summit of a mountain or glacier. Some terrain may require the skills for both rock climbing and ice climbing.

FROM COLORADO TO NORWAY Depending on your time frame and your budget, you can enjoy ice climbing in these United States of America during the winter season, according to Golden Mountain Guides. With various climbs in Denver, Golden and Boulder, Colorado, this company offers everything from beginner to advanced adventures. Icefalls, cliffs and frozen waterfalls are their playground, and they cater to folks who consider this sport invigorating.

If you have more time on your hands, head over to Reisadalen, a hiking area in Norway. The season begins in December and lasts until mid-April with all kinds of terrain for ice climbers. Beginners start on the climbing arena and experts can climb “the big lines” in Reisa National Park.

PREPARATION IS KEY Does it go without saying that this isn’t a sport for the faint of heart? Nor is it for those who haven’t prepared themselves.

Physical conditioning is key to making sure you’ll be able to make the grade on those ice walls.

Besides doing some strength training to ensure your quads and biceps are ready, you’ll also need some mental preparation for staying calm under pressure.

Skills and safety training are required before you take to the ice.

You’ll need to invest in some serious gear to play at this sport.

Of course there are ice tools: axes designed to facilitate holding onto the ice, spiked tools that help with traction and screws to use for protection as well as boots and safety gear. Learning how to

ice climb takes a keen interest in the sport, fancy footwork and coordination, and the tools are an important part of having fun while still being safe and sound after the climb.

Anyone interested in trying this sport should know there are potential hazards like falling ice and avalanches. If that doesn’t deter you, get some training. Look for qualified teachers and guides and learn all the safety protocols by taking a course through Ouray (Colorado) Ice Park or the American Alpine Institute.

hen I was in graduate school, we visited the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery located in Osaka, just southwest of Kyoto, Japan. Our study of international business extended to a tour of this world-class distillery, and drinking shots of whiskey at 10 a.m. was a welcome change from poring over case studies in a classroom back home in Arizona. Like everything in Japan, the tour was a lesson in culture, decorum and the elegance of a well-wrapped gift. We were schnockered by noon.

TOURING THE WORLD OF WHISKEY You don’t have to take a 15-hour plane trip to find whiskey that good. Start your adventure right here in the United States beginning in Louisville, Kentucky. Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery is on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, serving as the official start of the tour. You can book a tour of anywhere between one and two hours, learning about whiskey production and the difference between barreling and toasting.

Whichever tour you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to taste six or seven different types of bourbon, whiskey and rye. Make sure you make a reservation, and for longer tours, expect a gift.

South of the border you can enjoy Caribbean rum that comes from Barbados, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. These tropical rums are made primarily from sugarcane juice or molasses and thanks to the balmy climate, this rum ages to create light varieties as well as a more complex, aged taste. White rums are popular in drinks like mojitos, characterized by a light, fruity

taste, and the darker ambers evoke flavors of vanilla, wood and spice, often enjoyed “neat” or on the rocks.

THE ISLES HAVE IT Both Scotland and Ireland are treasure troves for whiskey lovers. Even teetotalers have heard of Glenfiddich, a worldrenowned distillery with tours for all tastes.

The Glenturret is Scotland’s oldest distillery.

Tourists can enjoy watching distillers work with original equipment, then toast to their good health at the Michelin Star-rated Lalique Restaurant.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, the Irish boast the Jameson Distillery, located in County Cork. This whiskey goes back to 1780 when John Jameson started making a whiskey that combines pot still and grain whiskeys, and today it’s known for blending modern techniques with the traditional craft of whiskey-making.

Another famous name known throughout the world is Bushmills, and you can visit the Old Bushmills Distillery in Bushmills, Ireland, to learn more about every stage of the whiskey production process.

FROM THE LAND DOWN UNDER If you have a hankering to visit Australia, just know you can witness some cuttingedge technology by visiting Archie Rose, an urban distillery in cosmopolitan Sydney.

New by European standards, this distillery was founded in 2014, and the founders are committed to using local and native ingredients in copper stills custom-made for malted barley.

Besides hosting fast cars on ice, St. Moritz is known to have one of Europe’s highest luxury shopping venues. The event blends classic car exhibitions with tinkling glasses from the piano bar. Tastes are reflected not only in the vehicles but also in the chatter between high society folks and their entourages.

THE HISTORY OF TECH GEAR First, a little something about the history and evolution of tech gear. Prior to the 1970s, early synthetics were developed to help mountaineers who valued the fabric’s weight and durability. The military required innovations in tech gear to accommodate the need for multiple functions, often under extreme conditions.

Wearable clothing technology in the 1940s allowed early health monitoring, and some brainiac invented a wearable computer to cheat at roulette in the 1960s.

This waterproof, breathable fabric, patented in 1976, caused a revolution in sportswear. The new phenomenon allowed for moisture to be “wicked” from the body, providing a comfortable type of garment for those

FROM SAND TO SNOW Tuck away your flip-flops and, dare we say, your white shoes (just in case you believe in that “no white shoes after Labor Day” rule of styling). Enter weather-worthy shoes and boots that also complement the line of your coat or the hem of your pants.

If Louboutin 5-inch stilettos are either not in your budget or your arches scream “No!” take heart because there’s a new retro style in vogue, according to fashion guides in Glamour magazine.

“Grandma shoes” have been spotted on the likes of actresses like Dakota Johnson, characterized by square-toe silhouettes, short block heels and Pilgrim buckles.

These blasts from the past work great with jeans of any type and they are a welcome change from sloppy sneakers or sky-high platforms just begging to send you on a trip to the podiatrist.

NEVER OUT OF STYLE Depending on how deep the snow is in your neck of the woods, a classic ballet flat will never go out of style. If you’re slogging through wet weather, tuck those flats in your favorite tote and put on the boots you’ve been dying for: this year’s slouchy boots have made a comeback, along with the tony equestrian look

We looked to Villiger Cigars for ideas on which lounges to visit. With stores in Switzerland, Germany and the United States, Villiger was named after the family of Heinrich Villiger who worked right up until his death in July 2025 at the age of 95. The company was started by his grandparents who inspired his love of cigar-making.

hen packing your bag, think twice about what you’ll bring in your jewelry pouch. That urge to show off your great-aunt’s 1920s diamond brooch should be tempered by where you’ll be going and what you’ll be doing.

If you’re on your way to diving in the Great Barrier Reef, please leave that precious brooch at home.

There are lots of other choices for what we’re calling “adventure-proof” jewelry: that is, fun and beautiful pieces designed to withstand the rigors of the road as well as any activities that cause you to break a sweat. You’ll want to look for durable pieces both waterand scratch-resistant, jewelry that fits securely and doesn’t cause you undue angst when you’re out in the elements.

FIRST THINGS FIRST Probably the most important element of adventure-proof jewelry is water resistance. Stainless steel, silicone and gold-plated stainless steel resist tarnishing, whether from an afternoon swim or a sweaty game of tennis. These materials won’t become corroded if you happen to get them wet in salt water or the lap pool.

You’ve heard of titanium as a material for new hips? Well, it’s hip to have titanium jewelry! Both titanium and tungsten are extremely hard and scratch-resistant, so this material is perfect for someone who is out on the diamond run, slalom skiing or rappelling off El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Who says you can’t be bold and beautiful at the same time?

WHAT NOT TO WEAR Consider what not to bring on your extreme sport vacation as well as those pieces that will be comfortable, durable and chic. Any jewelry that tarnishes or corrodes like sterling silver is a bad choice. Some jewelry is said to be waterproof, but those may be pieces with a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish. Many times these finishes have a shorter lifespan. The waterproof finish can wear off, and after a while you may notice it’s fading or discoloring.

Take note to make sure your adventureproof jewelry is kind to your skin. Some brands use stainless steel or brass for their pieces and for those of us with sensitive skin or allergies, that necklace or those earrings may cause an allergic reaction.

hether you’re having a quiet meal for the two of you or entertaining a dozen friends this winter, your food will be hotter and heartier than what you would serve in the summer, and your wine selection ought to have the same heft and warmth.

For anyone who needs to run out and grab a bottle or is still assembling their wine collection here’s our suggestions for a few red wines — and one white — to keep in mind for your cold-weather feasting.

PINOT NOIR Considered by some to be more refined and adaptable than cabernet sauvignon or other bolder reds, pinot has a lighterbodied appeal that goes well with its red-fruity flavors like strawberry, cherry and raspberry, often with a floor of forest and truffle notes.

Its silky mouthfeel with subtle acidity is a great balance for the richness of poultry as well as salmon and other fatty fish. It shines with pork, pizza and most soft cheeses.

The heat of its peppery and cinnamon base is overlaid with cherry, blackberry and dark chocolate notes. It’s wellmatched with a wide variety of dishes, from beef, chicken and pork to Korean barbecue and cheesy pastas.

SYRAH/SHIRAZ The former originates from France and the latter from Australia, but they come from the same grape and share the same basic characteristics with a few variations: Syrah tends toward a peppery taste with higher acidity and softer tannin notes, while shiraz tends to gain a fuller body and ripe, bold fruit flavors from growing in warmer climates.

Both pair phenomenally with roasted or grilled meats and vegetables including pork, beef, poultry and eggplant, as well as any smoky or spicy dishes.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON A classic winter wine varietal, “cabs” are brimming with body and rich, dark-fruit flavors like blackberry and black currant, often mingling with tobacco, vanilla and cedar within its tannic structure. Higher alcohol content gives it extra warmth.

Serve it with grilled ribeye steak (or really any kind of steak or burgers), roast lamb, aged cheeses, beef bourguignon, heavier vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto, eggplant parmesan and even smoked tofu.

CHARDONNAY It probably doesn’t surprise you that this is our choice for a winter white if you get weary of all those reds. Chardonnays as a whole span a host of flavors and profiles, but the “oaked” varieties are likely to have the creamy, buttery and vanilla notes that tends to go over especially well during the winter.

Pair it with chicken, lobster, pork or seared scallops; creamy dishes like risotto and bold cheeses also are good partners.

According to news from the Cleveland Clinic, anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the United States, affecting about 40 million people. Based on research related to mental health disorders, anxiety often causes disruption of sleep patterns.

WELLNESS ANXIOUS ABOUT BEING ANXIOUS Sometimes sleep anxiety shows up as a preoccupation, aiming for that perfect sleep but interrupted by tracking data collected by wearable devices. Researchers have coined the phrase “orthosomnia,” an obsession with getting the highest possible quality of sleep.

That focus is exacerbated by tracking of deep sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and what’s considered sleep efficiency.

Constant monitoring can create a vicious cycle; there’s anxiety in anticipation of feeling anxious.

Counselors recommend discontinuing the monitoring and relaxing into how you feel rather than hours logged on a sleep device.

They urge their clients to develop routines of healthy sleep hygiene including relaxation prior to bedtime and an emphasis on general health.

he skin care aisle isn’t just for adults anymore. Social media is packed with tweens asking for $90 serums, teens double-cleansing before school, and Gen Alpha kids showing off routines that rival dermatologists.

In a culture where aesthetic pressure starts early, parents are left wondering what’s safe, what’s just hype, and what does young skin actually need? Let’s clear it up.

THE BASICS COME FIRST For most kids, skin care doesn’t need to be complicated. Dermatologists agree that the foundation should include: A gentle cleanser — One that doesn’t strip the skin. Look for fragrance-free, sulfate-free options.

A light moisturizer — Hydration is key, especially after cleansing.

Daily sunscreen — This is the only anti-aging product that truly matters, even for teens. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ that’s noncomedogenic and easy to apply.

That’s it. No 10-step routines. Just consistency.

WHAT TO AVOID Many trendy products are designed for mature skin — and can do more harm than good for kids.

Retinol, exfoliating acids (like glycolic or salicylic) and vitamin C can irritate

young, developing skin if not used properly. Fragrances, dyes and essential oils may cause sensitivity or allergic reactions. Over-cleansing or “skin cycling” trends often seen on TikTok can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier.

If a child’s skin looks red, tight or suddenly breaks out more after starting a new product it’s usually a sign they’re doing too much.

ACNE IS NORMAL—AND TREATABLE When breakouts do start, especially during puberty, gentle targeted care is helpful. A salicylic acid cleanser or a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment (in low concentrations) can make a big difference. Don’t jump to harsh solutions too fast because sometimes, less is more.

For persistent or cystic acne, it’s best to skip the influencer advice and see a dermatologist.

STARTING HEALTHY HABITS Skin care should be about health, not perfection. It’s a great opportunity to teach tweens and teens about taking care of their bodies without tying their worth to how they look. That might mean scaling back the routine or gently correcting misinformation from their favorite YouTuber.

esides regular bathing and slapping on some moisturizers, you may not be giving your skin the attention it deserves. There’s a clear link between our skin and our overall health, according to Stefan Weiss, MD, FAAD, of Trillium Clinic in North Carolina.

“Your skin health is often the first place where internal imbalances manifest,” writes Dr. Weiss on the clinic’s website.

Persistent acne, excessively dry or flaky skin, dark patches (a result of hyperpigmentation and melasma) and skin discoloration can all be symptoms of a more serious medical problem.

EMERGING RESEARCH Have you ever heard of the “gutskin axis?” This is the bidirectional communication between our gut and our skin, either through the immune system, hormones or the microbiome, which allows inflammation to enter the bloodstream. We’ve heard the knee bone is connected to the leg bone, but rarely do we hear about the deep connection between what happens in our bellies and how that manifests through our skin.

And it works both ways.

Without getting too technical (or too graphic), a weakened gut lining can allow toxins to enter the bloodstream that in turn trigger inflammation. This can show up in a variety of ways, including eczema (patches of skin that build up as a sort of callous or “plaque”), psoriasis and acne.

TREATMENTS ABOUND There may not be a cure for all these medical issues related to the gut-skin axis, but there are treatments for pain, itching and swelling. Depending on the inflammatory condition, studies

From Medical News Today, doctors report that stress can affect the skin, causing a rash or hives. Treatments include steroids, antihistamines and antibiotics. Prevention may be more difficult, they report, as we can’t always avoid stressful situations. Whether it’s a difficult work situation or problems in our relationships, stress is a part of life.

Their recommendations are, as so often is the case, to follow a healthy diet and get regular exercise. Lifestyle factors are always changing, and change will generate stress. The skin conditions that may show up include: • Heat rash. Your skin may erupt in bumps when you’ve been exposed to a hot and humid climate.

• Rosacea. This is a more chronic condition, appearing on the face as a red rash, sometimes with tiny broken blood vessels.

• Contact dermatitis. If the skin meets with an allergen like fragrance, soap, metals or latex, a rash can form.

• Eczema. Another chronic condition of patchy skin.

this adjustment may be harder. A condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) can cause people to have a distorted image of their own body. Before having any type of cosmetic procedure, someone with BDD needs to find treatment to learn healthy coping skills.

THERE’S ALWAYS RISK Any time someone opts for elective surgery, there is risk. Some of that may involve anesthesia and its side effects; for others, it’s the risk of getting addicted to having cosmetic surgeries. In between are patients who struggle with emotional highs and lows, from anxiety prior to the surgery to elation after the swelling subsides and the results are in.

There are plenty of ways to mitigate this risk. First, do your homework. The more you know about the procedure you’re choosing, the better you will be able to manage your expectations. Build a support system that includes your surgeon and express your concerns to him or her prior to the surgery.

For a happier outcome, get your questions answered before you go “under the knife.”

UPCOMING TRENDS According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more and more patients will be seeking subtle procedures to augment breasts and buttocks, with another trend toward downsizing from previous surgeries or performing breast reductions.

Roy Kim, M.D., suggests the surge in weight loss drugs has increased the demand for skin excision procedures like neck lifts, facelifts and breast lifts along with abdominal liposuction and the famous “tummy tuck.”

These procedures remove loose skin that may have been caused by weight loss due to diet and exercise, semaglutide or pregnancy.

There’s a trend toward younger people having procedures earlier, recovering much faster from less dramatic surgeries.

Early upkeep allows them to avoid overexaggerated stretching and obvious scarring.

Another trend is waistline reduction, which allows a surgeon to narrow a waistline without any rib removal surgery, a procedure called “rib modeling.”

Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons demonstrated a 5% increase in all cosmetic procedures between 2022 and 2023, and they predict an increased demand as new innovations, techniques and products become available.

COPING WITH CHANGE There may be some physical effects like swelling or bruising, and it’s best to avoid the mirror for a while after a procedure.

Doctors report there is a common “thirdday blues” that can happen around the third day after surgery. This may be the result of a few things including pain, exhaustion and metabolic changes, and pain medication can itself cause negative side effects.

Some estimate that homes increase as much as 25% in value with waterfront views generating the highest return on investment. Properties may command up to 100% more than those without a view. Demand drives sales, and in Arizona there are plenty of views to be enjoyed.

WHY BUY? Besides providing the joy of seeing and even being part of nature, homes with a view provide an expansion of both space and light, often with a

ocal points are the anchors of the interior design world, intended to draw the eye to a specific location in a room to give your gaze a place to rest and the space a sense of organization and purpose.

Flocking TO YOUR YARD ALL WINTER WITH

or humans, a luxurious winter means staying inside a well-insulated home and stretching out in front of a fireplace drinking hot cocoa or a hot gin toddy as the storm passes. For wild birds, it’s being able to find a source of water that isn’t frozen over during the coldest winter days. Many can drink and bathe in snow, but that’s not ideal because warming the body back up taxes their stores of energy.

Bird enthusiasts working to attract feathered friends to their yard approach this dilemma in one of a few ways, but the easiest and most elegant solution for everyone involved is to set up a heated birdbath.

HOW THEY WORK First of all, the idea isn’t to provide avian travelers with a miniature hot tub but just to keep the water from freezing.

Most have a thermostatic heater that turns on when the temperature reaches about 35 degrees so the water will continue to flow rather than freeze.

It may not keep all of the water from freezing if the bowl is especially large or the temperature especially frigid, but there will at least be an opening in the middle to allow birds to drink.

You can buy a submersible heater (also called a birdbath de-icer) to add to your conventional birdbath, but it will need to be kept underwater while it’s running to keep the motor operational over the long haul.

The other, more expensive option is a birdbath with an integrated heater, encased by layers of plastic keeping it dry. Either will need to be plugged into an outdoor GFCI outlet using an extension cord rated for outdoor use.

BIRD OF CAUTION There have been reports of birds not being able to fly after bathing in a heated birdbath due to their feathers freezing once they get out of the water in very cold weather. Ways to keep this from happening include putting a grate over the bowl to prevent birds from going in too deep, putting rocks in the bottom of the bowl or putting boards over the top to cover all but the edges of the water.

side from being a popular image seen on jigsaw puzzles, winter reading nooks are a wonderful way to revel in the coziness of the season.

These nooks can and should be year-round features of your home, but they take on a special resonance after the leaves have fallen and the snowfalls come. They beckon as a chamber of warmth and enrichment where you can steal a little “me” time with the latest bestselling novels or return to your personal classics.

Whether you need to create a reading nook or already have one you just need to warm up a little, here are ways to fortify it for winter snugness.

FINDING YOUR PLACE If you don’t yet have a designated reading nook you have a few options. A small built-in space with a plush cushioned armchair or bench, preferably next to an expansive window that floods it with natural light, provides the ultimate in privacy and luxury. This is a relatively easy improvement project but could take up precious time that could be spent indulging in your favorite tome.

Carving a nook out of the space you have is easily done as well. Simply pick a corner out of your living or family room, bedroom, even some large kitchens could work. One with a window,

fireplace or both would be ideal. Choose the type of armchair you find most comfortable and plop it underneath a floor lamp for overhead task lighting.

Add a footrest if your favorite reading position requires it, a side table for drinks and a small bookshelf that can double as a second “wall” to delineate your space.

For an even cozier feel you can use a longer bench or daybed as your seating, which can be shared if you wish — this can also double as an accommodation for overnight guests.

‘WINTERIZING’ YOUR NOOK Once you have the basics down it’s time to layer it up for the season!

Buy the fuzziest rug available for the base so you won’t need to wear shoes, or maybe even socks, to stay toasty.

This can be under or on top of another rug for extra padding. Throw pillows on and all around your seating can soften the edges and give you a few more places to sit or rest your feet.

A basket stuffed with blankets and quilts will make the space look royally rich, even if you only use a couple of them. A candle on the side table or shelf, with or without a flame, adds an extra point of light and heat to help focus and calm your mind. A seasonal arrangement of dried flowers and branches can be the final connection to winter’s charm.

f you don’t mind being a maverick in the real estate world, you can find all sorts of hidden gems for the discerning buyer. Much like a thrift store shopper searching for diamonds among paste jewelry, real estate “detectives” can find undervalued properties as long as they stay ahead of market trends.

THE SKILLS OF A SEER AND A SCIENTIST In a perfect world, the best way to spot up-and-coming markets would be to get out a crystal ball and try to look into the future. While being clairvoyant may not be your strong suit, you will need a keen sense of observation. But gut instinct alone won’t get you any returns: you’ll have to become a scientist, too, and do some online and in-real-life research.

You’ll also need to demonstrate diplomacy, master the art of networking and do some good old due diligence by researching records and data.

By tracking historical data, you can take a look at how property values may have changed over the last five to 10 years. Keep an eye on large infrastructure projects that have been approved by the county or the city. New schools, shopping centers

and road construction are keys to the parts of town coming up in the world.

Investors wouldn’t be investing if there wasn’t something happening there.

MAKE CONNECTIONS Once you’ve hit the books, hit the pavement.

Start talking to people. Local business owners can tell you how things are going in their neighborhoods, and they may let you in on some advance knowledge about projects that haven’t been announced (or in the media) yet. Local landlords might have properties that no one yet knows about, and depending on their motivation they may be willing to sell to you at a discount.

How do you tell if a neighborhood has potential? BlockChange, a Californiabased real estate group, says to analyze properties before they get to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) by connecting with wholesalers who specialize in off-market properties. Use direct mail marketing with a message that’s written straight to the homeowner. Pay attention to new business openings, and note when young professionals and artists may be moving into the ‘hood.

his time of year many of us are longing for the outdoor relaxation havens we’ve so lovingly created in our yards. When we do venture out to gaze at them, it’s a good time to reappraise how they look and feel.

In some cases, the exterior walls they’re nestled up against may not be adding much if they’re plain block or stucco. Softening these spaces with accents that complement the architectural style of your home can only add to their luxuriousness.

WOOD CLADDING The simplest approach is often the best.

If your home has modern, mountain modern, farmhouse or rustic elements and you don’t have wood siding (aka cladding) as the backdrop for your outdoor living space, it’s time to remedy that situation.

There’s a plethora of choices in an array of colors. Boards of any length can be attached in patterns such as tongue-and-groove or as shingles to create texture. Wood requires upkeep, but its beauty is singular.

Thermally modified wood, the material of choice for most cladding, is heated to about 400 degrees to eliminate most moisture, making it more durable and pest-resistant while transforming it into a deeper, richer hue.

STONE CLADDING Stone veneers are heavy, and some houses may need to be reinforced to bear the weight, but nothing connotes permanency and strength as well as deep ties to nature.

Granite is especially plentiful in Northern Arizona and makes a beautiful statement when used on a mountain modern, rustic or traditional home. Sitting, eating, playing and relaxing in front of this material is like taking your favorite picnic or workout routine up your favorite hiking trail.

There are other options that can be just as compelling. Limestone is versatile and durable, slate’s irregular edges and texture provide a dazzling depth, and sandstone’s diversity in color and pattern means you’ll find something perfect for almost any vignette.

OUTDOOR ART If cladding feels like overkill you can instead consider the many forms of outdoor art that can shift your patio, deck or terrace into the poetic, whimsical and/ or serene sanctuary you crave. Metal or all-weather canvas wall hangings can reflect the surrounding environment — large sheets of metal with cutout patterns of trees, branches, waterfalls or other natural features are especially popular. Other works take viewers into a different world, maybe even a cityscape.

The art itself can be composed of minerals or other resources drawn from the land nearby or farther away. Copper injects an earthy, distinctly Southwestern shine into any al fresco ambiance.

hen winter hits hard, your entryway becomes more than just a threshold — it turns into a front-line defense against snow, slush and chaos. But that doesn’t mean it can’t also look great. A well-designed mudroom or foyer balances rugged utility with style, giving guests a warm welcome while keeping the mess in check.

Here’s how to design a cold-weather entry that works hard and looks good doing it.

START WITH THE FLOOR Floors take the hit. Snow, salt and grit come in fast, so durability is key. Go for nonslip tile, sealed concrete or stone. These materials can handle moisture and are easy to clean. Skip the rugs — or layer smart.

Use indoor-outdoor mats or washable runners. Choose dark patterns to hide dirt.

Add radiant heat if possible. Heated floors dry boots and melt snow. It’s a luxury that earns its keep in chilly climates.
