The Many Sides to Tom Horn, Part 1

As I walk my dog, I listen to books on tape. Right now, I’m enjoying Tom Horn: In Life and Legend by Larry Ball. I know a lot about Horn and used to discuss him when I taught my Westward Movement class in college. There is also an excellent film — Tom Horn — starring Steve McQueen.

Horn was the quintessential westerner. Born in Missouri at the outbreak of the Civil War, he ran away from home at 16, perhaps because of parental abuse, perhaps simply a wanderlust unquenchable at an isolated Midwestern farm.

He arrived in Prescott broke and spent his last “two bits” on a beer and free sandwich at the Palace bar on Whiskey Row, before gaining his first paid employment as a stagecoach driver between Prescott and Santa Fe.

Horn went on to be a scout and mule train packer during the Apache Wars in the 1880s and was present at the surrender of Geronimo to General Crook. Horn served as a deputy sheriff in Globe under Glenn Reynolds, as a Pinkerton detective and finally a “range detective” in Wyoming.

He also was active in the “Pleasant Valley war” that pitted the Graham and the Tewksbury families against one another in Central Arizona around the turn of the century, in and around the hamlet of Young, resulting in the deaths of over 25 people, as well as the “Johnson County war” in Wyoming.

While serving as a deputy under Reynolds, the “Apache Kid” was captured, tried and convicted of several murders. Reynolds was tasked with transporting the “Kid,”

together with several other Apache convicts to the territorial prison in Yuma and asked Horn to assist.

At the last-minute Horn was invited to participate in a rodeo in Phoenix and begged off. Along the trip, the wagon carrying the prisoners needed to ascend a steep hill, so all got out to walk to lighten the load.

The Apaches planned an escape. As it was winter, the two lawmen wore heavy coats over their sidearms and when several of the lawbreakers attacked Reynolds as they walked, they were able to wrest his “long gun” from him and killed him.

Horn always regretted not being with Reynolds, as he spoke the Apache language and would have overheard the plot.

PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Hit Squad 17 rocks through dance, funk, rock, pop and R&B tunes, laying down the beat one needs to get up and move.

With Lucy Hill on vocals, joined by Joe Serrato on guitar, Kevin Nelson on the bass and Scott Henderson on drums, the band melds into a high-energy musical entertainment machine. Classic rock defines this cover band, playing all the great tunes loved by generations.

Hit Squad 17 is playing at Jersey Lilly Saloon on Nov. 1, 8 p.m.-midnight and at Whiskey River Tavern on Nov. 14, 8-11:30 p.m.

Meet the Band

Lucy Hill , lead vocals

Lucy was born and raised in Hollywood, California, on the back lots of Universal, Warner Bros. and Paramount Studios. She appeared in numerous plays, music videos, film and TV shows. In 2005 Lucy moved to Prescott and started a family. In the years since, her family has thrived along with her musical aspirations. Each being equally important, Lucy’s focus is on God, family and rocking.

Scott Henderson , drums/vocals

Born and raised in Southern California and later relocating to the Bay Area, Scott has a wide and varied musical background. Projects and ensembles included rock, jazz, metal, R&B, country and blues, as well as orchestras and musical theater. Now based in Arizona, Scott continues to bring high energy and fun to each performance for the enjoyment of all.

Joe Serrato , guitar/vocals

Joe picked up a guitar about 35 years ago and taught himself to play. Soon he was performing countless dance shows, casinos and concerts from his hometown of Palm Springs to venues like the Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood.

His musical styles include country, classic rock and funk. Joe also is a vocalist and provides perfect harmony. He plays the bass and drums as well. About 10 years ago Joe moved to Everybody’s Hometown, Prescott, and has been playing guitar in bands here almost every weekend since.

Kevin Nelson , bass

Kevin has been playing bass for over 40 years, graduating from the Musicians Institute of Los Angeles. Kevin studied under world renowned jazz educator Charlie Banacos and privately with Jon Finn of the Berklee College of Music.

As a music instructor for over 30 years, Kevin teaches bass, guitar and piano. He has taught at various schools, rock camps and in group lessons where he currently instructs adults and children.

Kevin recently moved to Prescott from Boston where he played and recorded with numerous musicians including Carole King, Steven Tyler and Herb Reed and the Platters. His theater credits include Grease, Hair, The Sound of Music, Footloose and Legally Blonde.

Moussetache Café Offers Globally Inspired Food, Drink

In July 2024, Prescott resident Kira Gill’s dream became reality with the opening of her shop Moussetache Café, the first U.S. outpost.

Inside Pine Ridge Marketplace, Moussetache Café has become a local favorite for its global menu and sense of community. With vintage furniture, antique bookshelves and mismatched teacups, the space feels like a blend of an old English tearoom and a fantasy novel come to life.

Moussetache is home to Prescott’s only madefrom-scratch bubble tea, made with real ingredients. Customers also can indulge in a vibrant drink menu featuring mousse cream cheese teas, fruit infusions, Indian masala chai, pink tea and rotating specials that keep regulars coming back.

The café’s signature Harry Potter-style Butterbeer, a sweet and frothy drink, has become a local obsession.

More than a café, Moussetache is a creative gathering space that regularly hosts themed events like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings nights, bringing families, fans and food lovers together for unforgettable experiences.

The café has a boutique gift shop offering original artwork, handmade journals, vintage keepsakes, apparel and other curated gifts. Whether you’re shopping for a unique gift or browsing while sipping tea, it’s a destination all its own.

With plans to expand the brand across the United States, Gill hopes to bring the Moussetache experience to even more communities, but for now, Prescott has the magic all to itself.

MATFORCE Marks 20th Anniversary Nov. 14 at Prescott Conference Center

MATFORCE, a community coalition leading the fight against substance use and abuse in Yavapai County, is a force to be reckoned with and it’s celebrating its 20th anniversary with a free breakfast event Nov. 14.

Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. for the event at the Prescott Resort and Conference Center, 1500 AZ-69, with the program running from 9 to 10 a.m. RSVPs should be submitted by Nov. 7 by calling 928.708.0100 , emailing info@matforceaz.org or visiting http://qrco.de/bgJH86

“We’ll go through the years from 2005 to 2025 and just hit some of the highlights of things that have happened, and just celebrate those successes,” Executive Director Merilee Fowler says.

MATFORCE has been sending and reinforcing its message through school programs, workshops, presentations, prescription drug disposal and much more since 2005. It’s expanded its reach statewide through partnering with likeminded organizations through associations and summits, and its program for inmate reentry into the local community has spawned counterparts in five more Arizona counties, including Maricopa and Pinal.

“We kind of have become a model for other coalitions and the state has

realized it, so we have several large grants where we’re able to fund other large coalitions to support them and their work to emulate what we have done,” Fowler says.

Some of the group’s early leaders are expected to be there to mark the occasion, including former County Attorney Sheila Polk, who still chairs MATFORCE’s board. Past and present employees and volunteers are encouraged to come, as well as anyone else who is interested.

Fowler has been leading MATFORCE since she became its first paid employee in 2006, so

she’s been at the forefront of every battle the nonprofit has fought:

“We’re going to talk about different legislative wins that we’ve had, and the work that we started around methamphetamine. But then we had some really terrible times with bath salts and ‘spice,’ and did some really innovate work around that to take care of it. Prescription drugs, we were the first ones in the state to do the Rx Misuse Initiative, getting doctors and emergency departments to change their policies around prescribing opioids.”

Homes, Hearts and Helping Hands

submitted by the Prescott Area Association of

When most people think of REALTORS®, they picture open houses, For Sale signs and busy negotiations. But behind the scenes, many of these professionals are rolling up their sleeves to give back in ways that go far beyond real estate.

In fact, seven out of 10 REALTORS® volunteer in their communities every month. That’s three times more than the average American. Many also give to local charities, proving that service is woven into the fabric of their profession.

From local projects to national initiatives like the REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days, members are urged to lend their time and talents to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Boys & Girls Clubs. Next year’s volunteer week is set for May 30 to June 7, when REALTORS® nationwide come together to make a difference.

REALTORS®

Here in Prescott, the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR) has embraced that mission wholeheartedly.

Each year, REALTORS® assemble Caring Bags for Meals on Wheels recipients, filling them with blankets, sanitizer, puzzle books and other thoughtful items. These bags are compiled and hand delivered by local members with a smile. This year, PAAR also teamed up with the Women’s Council of REALTORS® Prescott Area to co-host a Watson Lake cleanup, where volunteers hauled away bags of trash to keep one of the city’s most beloved parks pristine.

The giving doesn’t stop there. PAAR also runs a nonprofit called Caring PAARtners that provides emergency financial assistance to REALTOR® members facing life’s unexpected challenges, from medical hardships to property damage.

Through ongoing fundraisers, the association makes sure support is there when it’s needed most. If you would like more information about Caring PAARtners or are interested in donating, please visit www.paar.org/about

Each holiday season, PAAR invites the entire community to join in its annual Coats for Kids and Tennies for Tots drives. From warm coats and gloves to shoes and socks, donations collected at the PAAR office help ensure local children are bundled up and ready for winter.

For REALTORS®, giving back isn’t just a side project — it’s part of who they are. Whether they’re helping families find their dream homes or pitching in at a community event, REALTORS® are showing every day that their true business is building stronger, more connected communities.
