Summer is a time for us to slow our pace by a couple of steps and enjoy ourselves with friends and loved ones. The abundant sunlight draws us out of our homes to indulge in everything the world has to offer.

We travel to glorious destinations near and far, pursue self-care in spas, gyms and at home sweet home and generally live to our heart’s content.

We often turn to the same comforts and extravagances and vacation spots that have thrilled us in the past, but it could be time to choose some new ones to refresh our summer and our lives. Paris may be endlessly captivating to you, but this could be the year to give Tokyo or Rio a chance.

Find a new spa to supplement the one you know and love or branch out into new or newto-you restaurants or fashion trends.

Summer also is the perfect time to explore the always evolving world around us. New luxuries beyond our wildest dreams may await us.

Let us help show you the way …

YOUR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

Most of us have at least a couple of habits that aren’t working; we surf our phones too much, don’t eat right or sleep less than we’d like.

Many people live in a state of chronic stress. This can take a huge toll on your mental and physical health.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. All of this leads to the state

of our wellness: mind, body and spirit. Recognize that your mind, body and spirit are connected and it is important to find ways to nurture yourself to feed all three.

Since most people have numerous responsibilities and limited time, engage in self-nurturing activities that give you the biggest bang for your buck.

17 VOL. 4, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living FEATURE

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Pause — During each day, look for natural pauses like waiting in traffic, standing in line for your coffee or waiting for your tea in the morning. Use these moments to be still: don’t reach for your phone. Take a breath instead and think.

Be creative — Creativity connects and nourishes our minds, bodies and spirits, and you don’t have to be a professional artist.

Express yourself with drawing, coloring, painting or even origami.

Expressing your creativity is a wonderful self-nurturing practice.

Garden — Gardening is a wonderful way to refresh your mind and get a bit of exercise at the same

time. You don’t need a small farm either, just a few pots or a raised bed for planting herbs and vegetables. It’s a wonderful feeling to see them grow with your nurturing.

Pamper yourself — Take time for a mani-pedi, get a facial or a massage. Treat yourself to what makes you feel good, especially if that’s a full day at a resort spa. Rather than go with friends, make it a solitary experience and focus on your thoughts, leaving your phone in your purse.

Yoga — Practice yoga or meditation. They can help keep you calm, clear your mind and de-stress. Find a class, experiment with hot yoga or just lay out your mat at home.

Get outside — Nature connects us with ourselves. Try forest bathing, join a hiking group or pull out that bike and go for a ride. Better yet, while in the park take a break and watch the clouds, listen for birds and appreciate nature.

Get a trainer — If you’re looking to feel better, maybe it’s time to get a professional to help you get started. You’ll not only feel better physically but you’ll also feel good about yourself for following through.

Play — Finding unstructured and unscheduled time to play is vital, whether its board games, a specific sport or just playing on the floor with children or a pet. Allow time to frolic and be in the moment.

INVEST

LUXURY COSMETICS

ITO LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER

n the ever-evolving world of beauty, the distinction between standard and luxury cosmetics has never been more pronounced.

While the initial cost of highend cosmetics might seem daunting, the investment in luxury makeup offers benefits from superior formula quality to enhanced personal satisfaction.

Here’s why splurging on these high-end items can be a rewarding decision.

UNMATCHED QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE

Luxury makeup brands are synonymous with excellence, investing heavily in research and development to deliver products offering the best in coverage, longevity, texture and skin health.

The use of premium ingredients ensures that these cosmetics not only look impeccable on the skin but also provide nourishing benefits, improving your skin over time. For instance, luxury foundations often are infused with skin-care ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, promoting hydration and antioxidant protection.

EXCLUSIVE AND INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS

High-end beauty brands are at the forefront of innovation, often introducing groundbreaking products and technologies that

set trends within the industry. From pioneering formulas that offer multidimensional effects to bespoke beauty experiences, luxury makeup allows you to access the latest advancements in cosmetic science. This innovation extends to packaging, with luxury brands offering elegantly designed products that evoke a sense of sophistication and indulgence.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL PRACTICES

In recent years, luxury makeup brands have increasingly committed to sustainability and ethical practices, from sourcing ingredients responsibly to implementing environmentally friendly packaging.

Investing in these products means supporting companies that prioritize not just beauty, but the health of our planet and the well-being of its inhabitants.

PERSONAL SATISFACTION AND CONFIDENCE

Perhaps the most compelling reason to invest in luxury makeup is the unparalleled joy and confidence it brings. Using highquality, beautifully packaged products can transform your beauty routine into a luxurious ritual, elevating your daily life and enhancing your self-esteem. The tactile pleasure of applying a sumptuous lipstick or the radiant finish of a premium foundation can make a difference in how you feel about yourself and how you present yourself to the world.

BRING POWER

TO YOUR POSING

If you’re preparing for a presentation or an important interview, it’s natural to be nervous. Even the most proficient speakers worry about messing up or making a mistake. But there is something you can do to give yourself more confidence and boost your performance: Power Posing.

Power poses are open, expansive postures that use body language to exhibit power, confidence and assertiveness. A widened body posture and claiming physical space is a nonverbal way of asserting yourself.

Consciously standing or sitting in an open posture helps you feel more confident — and show it to others.

On the flip side, when people retreat into low-power poses like hunching over or crossing their arms, it can be interpreted as submissive and a lack self-confidence.

Social psychologist and Harvard Business School associate professor Amy Cuddy popularized power-posing in a viral TED Talk in 2012. She discussed how high-power and low-power poses cause people to judge someone’s character. Interestingly, Cuddy suggests that body positions also stimulate hormonal changes and have positive effects on how people perceive themselves. Here are four power pose examples:

THE VICTORY POSE

You’ve probably instinctively exploded into a victory pose to celebrate a success. Raising your hands or fists above your head in a “V” shape is a natural reaction. Of course, you don’t want to spend an entire speaking engagement in

a victory pose, but try standing in one beforehand and visualizing your success. It can build your confidence and get your adrenaline pumping.

THE WONDER WOMAN

The ultimate superhero pose: Stand up straight, tilt your chin upward and put your fists on your hips. Try it first in front of a mirror to get comfortable.

THE SALUTATION

Firmly plant your feet, stick out your chest, lift up your chin and stretch your arms wide with your palms facing up. Do this in a private space with some mindful breathing to reduce stress.

THE OBAMA

President Barack Obama was known for his controlled movements and this power pose reflects his ease and confidence. This pose involves putting your feet on your desk and leaning back with your hands behind your head. Of course don’t do this in a meeting, but if you’re on a call it can help with anxiety or nervousness. The person on the other end can’t see you but you still feel the effects.

Everyone needs a boost of self-esteem from time to time, and power poses can help your body language express your confidence. You won’t know if power poses help until you try them. Next time you’re in a stressful situation, like a vital presentation or interview, try adjusting your body language and see how it affects your mood or those around you.

THE ART OF CREATING A

POLLINATOR SANCTUARY

If you require landscaping inspiration, consider transforming space in your garden into a haven for pollinators. These tiny yet mighty creatures play an essential role in our environment.

By curating a space that attracts and sustains pollinators, you contribute to the ecosystem’s wellbeing while cultivating a vibrant garden for your family to enjoy.

Creating a pollinator-friendly garden involves thoughtful planning and a touch of creativity. Start by selecting various plants that flower at different times throughout the year. This ensures a continuous supply of nectar and pollen, offering pollinators sustenance from spring through fall.

Opt for native plants, which require less maintenance and are more resilient. You can filter for the type of pollinators you want to attract by visiting: www. desertmuseum.org/plantcare.

Incorporating a water feature, such as a birdbath or fountain, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your garden but also provides pollinators

with a vital resource. Ensure the water is shallow or has landing spots for the pollinators to rest upon, making it easier for them to hydrate.

The design of your garden should reflect a harmonious blend of functionality and visual appeal. Arrange plants in clusters to create a lush, inviting landscape that captivates the senses while offering an abundant and varied environment.

Using a mixture of colors, shapes, and sizes in your plant selection adds depth and interest to the garden, making it a focal point of beauty and serenity.

By dedicating a space in your garden to these crucial members of the ecosystem, you elevate your outdoor living area and contribute meaningfully to preserving biodiversity. A pollinator garden is a living work of art, embodying a deep appreciation for the natural world and the interconnectedness of all living things.

'Pull‘ is Key Word

IN THIS THRILLING HOBBY

Trap shooting is an exhilarating sport, requiring quick action and split-second timing to successfully shoot a flying clay pigeon. But oh what a feeling.

A sport since the 1800s when created to practice bird hunting, it became an Olympic sport in 1900. It continues to grow in popularity as a hobby, and for those wanting more of a challenge there are competitions.

You likely are familiar with the shout out of “pull” from many movie and TV scenes that often depict the rich at play, so to speak. Yes, it can be a costly hobby just in shotgun shells and the price of rifles. A box of 250 rounds can go for $160, while shotguns range from several hundred to thousands of dollars.

That “pull” shout sets off a chainreaction demanding concentration, skill and confidence as the “pull” signifies the throwing of a clay pigeon from different angles away from the shooter. The shooter knows the point of origin, but has no idea of the target’s angle.

To set up your own trap shooting range of course make sure you have enough space and are obeying any city, county or state ordinances. You’ll need a trap thrower, which can cost $200 to $600.

And there’s even a double thrower in the $800 range. Imagine the thrill of two at once!

You’ll need earmuffs, shooting glasses and safety vests for you and your friends, plus shell carriers and perhaps a choke tube for your shotgun. A box of 60 clay pigeons goes for around $47.

It might be fun to get a trapshooting trainer that can help improve response time and accuracy with its instant detailing of shot position and velocity, among other things. Garmin has one for about $1,000 that syncs with your smartphone through an app.

The easy alternative to setting up your operation are shooting ranges and clubs where you pay a fee and can rent equipment.

The Prescott Trap & Skeet Club in Dewey serves the Quad Cities area. Website: https://ptsc.club.

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is about 90 minutes south of Prescott and two hours from Flagstaff. It is operated by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Website: www.azgfd.com/shooting-sports/ ben-avery-shooting-facility.

MEN ’S INSPIRED

WATCHES FOR WOMEN

The lines between a man’s watch and a woman’s watch are beginning to blur, and rightly so. A delicate wristwatch has its place, but a watch with a bit of heft feels substantial and sexy.

Men’s styled watches are larger, less ornamented, sometimes more interesting. To be fair, most don’t scream a particular gender and look great on any wrist.

Pair yours with feminine bracelets and rings for a stylish, sophisticated look. Here are a few styles to get you started.

ROLEX SUBMARINER

One watchmaker reigns supreme when it comes to men’s watches for women — Rolex. There is something powerful and sophisticated about a Rolex timepiece, especially the men’s models. The Rolex Submariner Date boasts a distinctive green dial and signature Oystersteel case and bracelet.

At 40mm, it is highly functional and no-fuss and definitely a fun one to pair with soft outfits and accessories.

AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK SELF-WINDING

Although the design has a Royal Oaks version for women, this is just bigger and bolder. Larger than the women’s 41mm, you can spot the signature octagonal case style from a mile away.

Wear this model, with an 18-carat pink gold case, for a classic look that demands attention. It’s a modern classic that catches eyes and admirers from the get-go.

HERMÈS H08

We know Hermès creates styles that resonate quality, and the H08 is no exception. The timepiece is innovative while still on brand with a satinbrushed titanium coat and sunburst satin-brushed titanium bezel. The dial is black nickel-treated and finished with the designer’s classic orange strap. It’s sporty without being obnoxious.

HUBLOT BIG BANG GOLD BLUE

Hublot’s Big Bang conveys a bit of royalty to your wrist. The 44mm 18k-gold case stands in bold contrast to the blue sunray satin-finished dial and complementing blue rubber and alligator straps. This is definitely a loud timepiece that makes a grand entrance. After all, it’s called the Big Bang.

TUFINA THEOREMA PIONIER

LONDON DIAMONDS

Made in Germany, Tufina watches operate on kinetic energy instead of batteries. To keep the watch running, you can manually wind it or wear it consistently to keep the wrist movements going.

Pionier’s London Diamonds design has a sunny dial featuring an open-back design. The see-through arrangement shows the gears inside with a special skeletonized date window at 3 o’clock, adding an element of elegance.

Forty1 Restaurant inside Ambiente Hotel, Sedona Photos by Jeff Zaruba

SEDONA'S AMBIENTE

OPENS HOTEL RESTAURANT TO THE PUBLIC

Following a successful first year of operations Forty1 — the sophisticated signature restaurant at the luxurious Ambiente that initially catered exclusively to the hotel’s guests — is now open to the public with a veteran of the Northern Arizona culinary scene as its new chef.

39 VOL. 4, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living LIFESTYLE

As the new head of all culinary efforts across the hotel, including the talented team at Forty1, Executive Chef David Duncan embodies that ethos as a Northern Arizona native with an appreciation for the local landscape and a steadfast commitment to showcasing its abundance through cuisine.

Sitting in the heart of the boutique property’s three rugged acres, Forty1 serves an always-evolving menu of a la carte dishes anchored by locally grown and seasonal, natural ingredients sourced from the Verde Valley and beyond.

Highlighting indigenous cooking styles as well as many of the flavors the Southwest is most revered for, the new menu developed by Duncan for the season features a nod to his love of native wild game, a range of which is incorporated into several offerings and is suited for guests craving those heartier dishes that are so beloved in the colder winter months.

“There’s something really special about the organic harmony that

emerges on the plate when you blend more untamed flavors with the tangible taste of seasonality from the natural ingredients that come to us from the Verde Valley, which is one of the richest agricultural regions in the Southwest,” Duncan said. “Refining that spirit and essence to suit a more evolved, adventurous palate is a delicate dance between tradition and innovation to ensure each dish both satisfies the senses and also tells a story of the land we call home.”

Featuring a diverse lineup of delectable starters and nourishing, farm-fresh feasts, highlights from Duncan’s menu include entrees like the Blue Crab Ramen ($52) with truffle-white miso dashi, Fresno chili, kimchi, shaved black truffle, beech mushrooms and golden pea shoots; Sea Bass ($65) with arancini, green pea puree, sauteed spring pea & pork belly, spring onion, daikon and yuzu beurre blanc; and Elk Back Strap ($66) with

bulgogi marinade, grilled bok choy, poblano-fingerling brava, crispy scallions and black garlic miso.

Alongside the robust food pairings, guests will also enjoy a meticulously curated wine list and a rotating, distinctly Arizona-inspired cocktail program. This season’s standouts include the Smoked Fall Fashion with Old Forester 100 Proof, apricot puree, orange bitters and dehydrated apricot chip and the Arizona Smoked Pear with Naran mezcal, Aperol, Fruitful prickly pear, lemon juice and dehydrated lemon garnish.

Like the rest of Ambiente, a Landscape Hotel, Forty1 features a contemporary matte black façade and chic design elements to offer a sumptuous and inviting atmosphere. Retractable floorto-ceiling windows allow for an abundance of light and effortless breeziness during the day, as well as immediate access to the outdoor pool terrace with roaring firepits perfect for colder months.

FRINGE & ROSES

BIG IN SPRING FASHION

What can be better than the first day of spring? It’s that time of year to enjoy the sunshine and warmer temperatures. It is also the time to replace those heavy layers of winter and enjoy some new fashion choices.

The absolute No. 1 trend for spring of 2024 is fringe!

This year fringe is simply everywhere — on handbags, jackets, skirts and sleeves. Besides the basic black fringe bag or skirt, fringe is showing up on one of the top colors of spring 2024 — a bright kiwi green lime color.

When you combine fringe with this bold green color you have two trends in one!

Spring is also seeing a big change in jewelry. After many seasons of delicate and dainty necklaces and earrings, bold is back in a big way. Chunky chokers, huge cuffs and animal inspired prints on any form of jewelry are huge this year.

This animal print trend can also mean a necklace inspired by butterflies or earrings shaped like fish.

Wear roses! Floral prints are a staple of spring, but 2024 is the year of the rose. You will find them on blouses, jackets and even pants. Another way to wear the rose is on a handbag. They are embroidered, they are painted and they are showing up everywhere this season.

A more casual trend for spring is the perfect boxy white T-shirt. This is a style that hangs just loose enough to hit at your waistband.

Whether pairing with casual jeans or a silky skirt, the boxy T-shirt works. Price points for this piece range from $10 to over $100, so everyone should be able to embrace this trend.

While a nice pair of white sneakers is always in style, designers have now embraced more dramatic colors in this casual shoe. Green suede, bright blue and neon pink are just a few of the colors available.

Spring is the time for a new beginning so head into your favorite shop and let the buying begin!

Wearing Neutrals

IS NOT BORING

Everyone is different and not every fashion trend, style or color works for everyone. The key to a capsule wardrobe with classic, neutral pieces is to find what works for you and then have fun with it.

Mastering the art of all-over neutrals is all about playing with texture and shape. Neutral outfits typically stick to a palette of white, cream, beige, gray, brown, navy and classic black and usually steer clear of bold patterns and overpowering details — but that doesn’t mean they’re boring.

To add a touch of character, mix different textures in with your neutral. For instance, combine matte and glossy elements and even incorporate knitted patterns.

Think also about layering textures. To lift your tonal look and add a wow factor without breaking the neutral vibe, add statement pieces in the form of jewelry, shoes, bags or coats. Pair a neutral pants outfit with a Sherpa clutch in the same tones, or add patent leather boots.

Adding texture to a neutral outfit can add depth.

When it comes to styling neutrals, play with volume. Consider an oversized coat, wide-legged trousers or an ample skirt. And volume doesn’t have to mean extreme — a frilly or slightly puffed sleeve can still add movement to a neutral look. High-waisted, wide-legged trousers are universally flattering paired with a fitted top. Neutrals are versatile, wearable and timeless — the ultimate quiet luxury.

They’ll never go out of style and are staples for years. Clothing with more longevity equals a win for you and your wardrobe.

Don’t be worried that dressing in neutrals means no more patterns. Neutrals are found in classic prints and patterns like leopard, dots, stripes, pinstripes and check patterns like gingham, plaid, houndstooth and more. These designs usually consist of at least two neutral hues.

For example, a classic striped T-shirt in navy and white and an animal print blouse in tan and black are perfect examples of neutral prints to wear with other basic colors. Just remember to look for the classic combinations. A tonal animal print with black jeans can rock a neutral look. But be careful of the size of the pattern. Generally, small- to medium-sized prints in medium to dark neutrals work better.

You can also wear two or more neutrals together to produce an effortless look. Pair black with light gray, or tan and cream. Navy and gray work well together as do ivory and khaki.

For an injection of style and personality, add a signature color from your wardrobe for a pop. For example, wear a scarf with a pop of orange against a beige top or a raspberry coat over neutral navy.

If you’re not sure what to pair with a nonneutral garment, add a neutral item and see how it looks. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

LYON DELIVERS

Marvelous Mix

Lyon Roman amphitheater
Scan for more information or to book your next trip with ROX Travel.

Recently we decided to make a repeat trip to Burgundy with our BFF traveling buddy, Rhonda, and included a fourday side trip to Lyon, France.

It seemed to fit all the items on our punch list. A city of historical significance with diversity, some mystery or sense of humor, and great food. Something European, but not pretentious. Lyon did not disappoint.

Our hotel was far enough away from old town Lyon to allow quiet evenings, but close enough to transportation and essential resources just a few blocks from the river.

The treasure of our neighborhood, though, was a wonderful Turkish restaurant whose alluring aromas tempted us. The incomprehensible menu didn’t discourage us. In spite of the fact that the waiter couldn’t understand a thing we said and we couldn’t understand him, we were able to order tender and crispy grilled chicken whose flavors we will never duplicate at home. It was served with small puddles of brightly colored, spicy relishes, olives and golden potatoes. We had plans that would include a traditional meal the following day, but this dinner offered some of the diversity we were craving.

A visit to Lyon included a trip to the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica on the top of Fourviére. While not the oldest church in Lyon, it is very ornate and her presence dominates the city. We spent a respectful few minutes inside and couldn’t avoid the temptation to take photographs of the glittering interior.

Directly down the hill from the basilica we were amazed at the remains of the Roman Amphitheater. Parts date back to 15 BC; it was built to seat 10,000 people. Lyon was a strategically important city for the Roman Empire as two important rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, crossed there making the city useful for passage to the Mediterranean.

Because of its important trade location, silk weaving was introduced to Lyon in 1466. The impact of the silk workers not only had a positive economic impact, the “traboules” hidden covered passageways the skilled craftspeople used to transport textiles between shops and ships to avoid the elements, also played an important role for the safe passage of messages and people for the French Resistance during WWII.

As we strolled through Old Town, I grabbed Rhonda when a small exterior door opened revealing one of the hidden passageways. I felt like I’d discovered Narnia.

While admiring my giant cherry earrings, bought in a boutique where Carmen Miranda could have plucked the fruit from her hat for jewelry, we snapped a few pictures in front of one of the multistoried frescos for which Lyon is famous — the Fresque des Lyonnais Célébres where images of 30 famous Lyon natives have been immortalized on the exterior walls.

Rhonda had done her homework and selected an accredited bouchon, one of only a few restaurants that have earned that designation in Lyon. To achieve the seal the restaurant must achieve several standards. The menu must contain traditional Lyonnaise fare using fresh ingredients hosted in a friendly atmosphere. At Les Fines Gueules we ate a wonderful lunch of salad Lyonnaise lavishly seasoned with salty lardons, escargots ladled with parsley butter and delicate pike quenelles finished with bubbly crab bisque. Service was warm and kind and helped “seal” the perfect ending to an excellent afternoon in Lyon.

2024 ’ s Trendiest

SPICES BRING SWEET INTENSITY

We’re always talking about trends when it comes to fashion, home décor, beauty rituals and the like. Culinary trends are less discussed but still easy to detect in restaurants and featured recipes, and even filter down into selection of spices and spice blends.

Leading spice manufacturer

McCormick pulls a page from Pantone’s playbook and crowns a “Flavor of the Year.”

Here’s a quick tour of this year’s spice landscape:

TAMARIND

This spice drawn from a tropical fruit of the same name is the aforementioned “Flavor of the Year.” The plant is native to Africa and thrives in tropical climates, so it’s also a staple of Southeast Asian, Central and South American and Caribbean cuisine.

ALEPPO PEPPER

Originating from Syria and widely used in Turkey and the rest of the Middle East, this moderately fiery ingredient is used on kebabs, chicken and seafood and included in salad dressing and yogurt dips.

Comparable to the spiciness of red pepper flakes, it offers a more nuanced flavor with hints of smokiness and sun-dried tomato and a salt-like texture. It adds a nice kick to eggs, toast, tomatoes and anything else you might desire.

BERBERE

It is available as a paste and a powder that can be added directly into dishes or reconstituted as a paste. Its sweetly sour and acidic taste wakes up curries, chutneys, meat, rice and noodle dishes, beverages, candies and anything else it’s added to.

This spicy, smoky North African blend tempers red chili pepper and ginger with milder spices like fenugreek, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, allspice and cloves. It’s essential to Ethiopian cuisine and features prominently in the stew considered its national dish, doro wat.

Use it in soups, stews, sauces and dips, and sprinkle it onto fruit, vegetables and fish. It’s fantastic as a dry rub for meat, too.

GOCHUJANG

A chili paste familiar to anyone who’s tried Korean barbecue, its versatile spicy, sweet and umami complexity adds depth to marinades, soups, stews and even desserts and cocktails. Sweeter and milder than Sriracha, it’s made from red gochugaru pepper flakes, sticky rice, fermented soybeans and salt. Heat levels may vary, and it’s a very concentrated paste so a little goes a long way.

Master

THE ART OF

IChampagne Sabering

t’s always impressive when someone wows a crowd by using a sword to open a bottle of Champagne. The art of sabrage — using a saber or knife to forcefully open a bottle of bubbly — has become an extravagant display.

If this is something you’ve always wanted to try, there are a few guidelines to make it a smooth, slick and safe achievement rather than a disaster. Remember, safety first.

CHOOSE YOUR BOTTLE

Champagne made in the traditional method is best for sabering because it receives dosage (a form of sweetness to balance it) and goes through a secondary fermentation in the bottle. This creates more pressure than wines like Prosecco.

CHILL YOUR BOTTLE

The temperature is critical, (between 38° and 42°). The cold makes the glass more brittle and easier to break so refrigerate a few hours before. Setting it in an ice bucket won’t do; that only cools the base of the bottle. After the bottle is chilled, some experts suggests flipping it corkside down in ice water for 30 minutes to create more pressure and a cleaner cut. Once it is chilled sufficiently, remove the foil, wire cage and metal cap. Then hold the bottle with your thumb on the cork until you’re ready. Due to the pressure, it could pop spontaneously and you don’t want that.

HOLD YOUR SABER

Whether you have a fancy sabering sword or just a large knife, make sure as it’s thin, sturdy and metal. It doesn’t need to be sharp, experts recommend using the back side of a kitchen knife to prevent damaging the knife.

HOLD YOUR BOTTLE

When you’re ready to saber, grasp it firmly by the base and point it away from any onlookers. You’ll want to hold it at a 30° to 45° angle. Now make sure your fingers are out of the way from incoming knives.

FIND THE SEAMS

You’ll get a clean break at the intersection of the seam and the lip, so aim there. The seam should face up. Place the blade edge on the seam where the curve begins. Keep the blade in contact with the seam: The object is to hit the point where the seams cross the top of the neck.

SABER

Hold the knife flat against the bottle with the blunt edge toward the lip. (Remember: Hold the bottle at the bottom.) Before striking, take a few practice strokes. Now run the blade back along the seam toward your body and quickly and firmly drive it back up the seam toward the lip. Strike the lip sharply with the blade at a slight angle. If you are successful, the cork (with a little ring of glass) should fly off the bottle and you should hear lots of applause. The cork can reach exciting speeds, so be careful.

BENEFITS OF CHOOSING A

HOLISTIC SPA VS MED SPA

If you’re looking to improve your health, appearance or even stress levels, your journey may lead you to considering spa services.

But choosing between traditional medical spa services or holistic spa services can get confusing.

HOLISTIC

The primary advantage of holistic spa services is that the overall goal is to heal the whole person, body and mind, with natural elements. Holistic spa services offer therapies that are chemical-free and aim for treatment of the entire body.

61 VOL. 4, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living WELLNESS

Holistic therapies target all aspects of a patient’s well-being, and by treating the entire system, the isolated issues are addressed, as well as others throughout the body. Treatments include facials, alternative treatments, reiki, oxygen therapy and reflexology.

And although these treatments are aimed at your entire body, specific concerns also are addressed like acne, dry skin or rosacea. Nutrition, fitness and alternative treatments can also be part of holistic spa visits.

After receiving holistic spa treatments, you will leave with a deeper understanding of how to care for your skin and continue to keep yourself in the best shape it can be.

MEDICAL

Medical spas address prominent cosmetic concerns with medical professionals trained to perform specialized procedures using medical-grade products. Since these

spas include medical supervision, med spas can incorporate procedures, therapies and tools like laser therapies, injectable fillers, muscle-relaxing wrinkle smoothers, cell freezing, advanced facials and chemical peels.

Med spas also focus on deepseated issues like deep wrinkles, acne scarring, age spots, intensive discoloration, loose skin and the full range of age-related skin changes. Medical spas can also use medical-grade treatments to address additional issues like weight gain and unwanted hair.

Medical spas have the ability to offer fat-freezing treatments and vaginal rejuvenation in some cases, which are not available at a holistic spa.

Your best bet is to decide just what services you are looking for and your ultimate goals. Are you looking for a natural approach or is a medical approach something

that calls to you? It is possible to find spas that specialize in both medical and holistic approaches, offering the best of both worlds. Either way, do your research and make an informed decision. And remember you can always change your mind and try either or both traditions for your inner and outer confidence and beauty.

ELEVATE WELLNESS: THE SURPRISING BENEFITS OF WELLNESS

VITAMIN INJECTIONS

eeling sluggish, foggy or just not your best self? You’re not alone. Even with a balanced diet, many of us don’t get the essential vitamins we need. Enter the gamechanger: vitamin injections. It’s more than just a health trend; it’s a direct line to feeling great.

WHY VITAMIN INJECTIONS?

Our bodies sometimes need a helping hand. Oral supplements are good, but not all the nutrients make it into your bloodstream. Vitamin injections bypass the digestive system, ensuring your body absorbs them fully and quickly.

THE HEROES OF HEALTH

Vitamin B12: Bid farewell to feeling tired all the time. B12 injections are famous for turning your energy levels around and helping with memory and heart health.

Antioxidants (vitamins C and E): These are your skin’s best friends. Beyond giving your skin a youthful glow, they help fight environmental damages and can improve overall cell health.

Lipo-Mino injections are administered directly into the muscle, usually in the arm, thigh or buttocks, allowing for better absorption compared to oral supplementation. The theory is that by boosting the body’s metabolism and enhancing the removal of fat, these injections can assist in weight loss efforts, especially when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

SAFETY FIRST

When done under the care of health care professionals, vitamin injections are safe and side effects are minimal. Most people report feeling nothing more than a slight pinch during the injection and possibly a bit of soreness.

WHO STANDS TO BENEFIT?

While almost anyone can feel better with an extra vitamin boost, those with specific dietary restrictions, absorption issues or chronic fatigue find vitamin injections particularly life changing.

YOUR PATH TO VITALITY

Interested? Start by chatting with your health care provider about your health goals and which vitamins you might lack. They can offer personalized advice and suggest a treatment plan.

EMBRACE THE POSSIBILITIES

Imagine waking up feeling refreshed, your skin radiant and your mind sharp. Vitamin injections can be a key part of turning that vision into reality.

Ready to transform your health with the power of vitamins? Your journey to a more vibrant, energetic you starts with a conversation. Take that step today!

Lip Thread Lift

YIELDS

NATURAL LOOKING RESULTS

The pursuit of fuller, more defined lips has led to the emergence of innovative techniques beyond traditional fillers.

One breakthrough is the lip thread lift, a minimally invasive procedure designed to enhance the natural beauty of the lips by providing lift, shape and volume.

HOW IT’S DONE

The lip thread lift involves the insertion of small, dissolvable threads under the skin of the lips and surrounding area.

These threads are usually made from polydioxanone (PDO), a biocompatible material widely used in medical sutures that safely dissolves. The procedure should be done by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

The process begins with the application of a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort, followed by the placement of the threads using fine needles. The threads not only provide an immediate lifting effect but also stimulate collagen production, offering long-term benefits to the skin’s texture and elasticity.

ENHANCED VOLUME, DEFINITION

One of the primary advantages of the lip thread lift is its ability to enhance the natural shape and volume of the lips. Unlike fillers that add volume by injecting substances into the lips, thread lifts provide a more subtle enhancement, lifting the lip edges and defining the cupid’s bow for a naturally fuller appearance.

MINIMAL DOWNTIME

The procedure takes about 30 minutes allowing patients to return to their daily activities shortly after. This makes it an appealing option for those seeking cosmetic enhancements without the significant recovery time associated with surgical options.

LONG-LASTING RESULTS

While the threads dissolve within six to eight months, the collagen stimulation they provoke can have lasting effects — 12 to 18 months.

REDUCED RISK OF COMPLICATIONS

As a minimally invasive procedure, the lip thread lift carries a lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgery. There is less risk of infection, scarring or significant swelling.

RISKS AND CONSIDERATIONS

However, the lip thread lift is not without risks. Potential complications can include minor bruising, swelling and discomfort at the injection sites. In rare cases, there might be thread migration or asymmetry, which requires correction. It’s crucial to consult with a qualified and experienced practitioner to minimize these risks.

WHAT IT’S NOT

A lip thread lift shouldn’t be confused with a surgical lip lift, which narrows the space between the nose and lips to create the appearance of fuller lips.

MMEN ARE EMBRACING LUXURY GROOMING

odern men are far more invested in their appearance and expect much more than a quick tidy-up with the razor at the barbershop like in their grandparents’ day.

Modern professional men need to make an impact in both their professional and personal lives and aren’t afraid to go for it.

Societal perceptions have changed and taking pride in your appearance is no longer just reserved for women. These days, men want a luxury grooming experience that leaves them feeling pampered, refreshed and looking like a million dollars.

Just look at the male-grooming industry. It’s thriving — spending on male beauty products has increased 77% each year for the past few years.

Perhaps prompted by the rise of male beauty influencers on social media, dedicated grooming and makeup products for men have been appearing in upmarket beauty salons and high-end stores more and more.

Chanel launched a male makeup line in 2018, followed by grooming and makeup lines by Harry Styles (Pleasing), Idris Elba (S’able Labs) and other celebrities. It’s no longer unusual for men to get manicures, wear eyeliner, a bit of coverup or style their hair with product and color.

If you’re looking to up your home game, stock your shelves with premium products and give yourself enough time to exfoliate, hydrate and take care of your skin. Find premium products that work with your hair type and style and learn how to use them — show your best self.

And luxury grooming is more than just a basic haircut. When you walk into the premium men’s grooming lounge, you should expect a full menu of indulgent services including beard sculpting, waxing, color, scalp massages, hot towel shaves and more. Some places offer shoeshines as well as esthetic skin care treatments for face and body and even massages. In other words, the full spa experience is now becoming a standard for men’s luxury grooming, and it’s about time.

THE BOARDROOM

This men’s grooming salon has three locations in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. The salons offer a relaxed, sophisticated environment. The Signature Service includes a personal consultation, tailored haircut and neck shave with spa services including paraffin hand dips, shampoo and conditioning, scalp massage, pressure point facial massage, steamed towel and stress-relieving hand massage. Grab a beer and prepare to be pampered. www.boardroomstylinglounge.com

Chakras & Energy Flow Understand

CIN REIKI PRACTICE

hakras, named for the Sanskrit word for “wheel,” are seven energy centers believed to be located along the spine, each associated with specific organs, emotions and aspects of consciousness.

The concept plays a role in several Asian healing and religious traditions, including ayurveda, meditation and yoga.

In reiki practice, these chakras play a crucial role in understanding the flow of life force energy, or “ki,” throughout the body. Starting from the base of the spine and ascending to the crown of the head, each chakra corresponds to different elements of human experience.

Using reiki, the aim is to balance and align these chakras by clearing any blockages or imbalance by practitioners placing their hands gently on or just above these chakra locations to transfer energy to them.

Root Chakra — At the base of the spine, this chakra represents our sense of stability, security and connection to the physical world. When balanced, it fosters feelings of safety and being grounded.

Sacral Chakra — Below the navel, this energy center governs our creativity, sexuality and emotional expression. A balanced sacral chakra encourages healthy relationships, creativity and a sense of pleasure in life.

Solar Plexus Chakra — Above the navel, this chakra is associated with personal power, confidence and self-esteem. When balanced, it empowers us to pursue our goals with clarity and determination.

Heart Chakra — At the center of the chest, this chakra governs love, compassion and forgiveness. An open and balanced heart chakra fosters deep connections with others and a sense of universal love and empathy.

Throat Chakra — This area governs communication, self-expression and authenticity. When balanced, it enables clear and honest communication, both with ourselves and others.

Third Eye Chakra — Between the eyebrows, this chakra represents intuition, insight and inner wisdom. A balanced third eye chakra enhances our ability to trust our instincts and perceive the deeper truths of our existence.

Crown Chakra — At the top of the head, this energy center connects us to the divine and the universe. When balanced, it fosters spiritual growth, enlightenment and a sense of unity with all beings.

Vitamin C TREATMENTS

MAY BE JUST THE OPTION FOR YOU

Although you’re probably getting vitamin C in your diet, it may not be directly benefitting your skin. Vitamin C serum has many health benefits, including promoting collagen production and protecting against sun damage. Using serums and other topical products is the most direct way to obtain vitamin C benefits, which include hydration, brightness and collagen production.

A 2017 study showed most healthy skin and organs contain high concentrations of vitamin C, suggesting that vitamin C accumulates in the body from circulation. Researchers also noted that topical vitamin C penetrates the skin best in the form of ascorbic acid.

Another study found that magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, another vitamin C derivative used in skin care, has been shown to have a hydrating effect on the skin, decreasing transepidermal water loss, allowing your skin to retain moisture better.

Vitamin C can help fade pigmentation and smooth the skin’s surface to reduce dullness, giving your skin a youthful glow. Vitamin C use inhibits melanin production, which may help fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent through its antioxidant capacity, which helps to soothe

your skin and reduce puffiness. Since it impedes melanin production, vitamin C can actually fade hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, age spots and melasma, which can happen where acne has healed.

If you have under-eye puffiness and circles, vitamin C serums can help smooth fine lines by plumping and hydrating this area.

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that depletes over time, and lower levels of collagen can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C is well known for boosting collagen production; collagen synthesis can’t happen without vitamin C because it is the essential cofactor for the two enzymes required for collagen synthesis (prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase).

Collagen production is tied to skin elasticity and firmness. Applying a vitamin C serum may boost collagen production, resulting in an overall tightening effect, making your skin look firmer and more toned.

Finally, another study found that vitamin C may help relieve sunburn, minimizing redness and accelerating cell turnover, replacing damaged cells with healthy new ones.

Topical application, in combination with vitamin E and other compounds, can help reduce the burn of a sunburn.

Adequate Sleep

ILEADS TO RADIANT SKIN

n the quest for flawless, youthful skin, we often turn to expensive creams, serums and treatments, overlooking a fundamental aspect of skin health that costs nothing and is accessible to all: sleep.

Dubbed as “beauty sleep” for good reason, the link between restful slumber and skin health is supported by a growing body of scientific research. Understanding how sleep affects skin health can be the key to unlocking the radiant, vibrant skin we all deserve.

SLEEP SPURS REGENERATION

Sleep is a critical period for the body to repair and regenerate, and this holds particularly true for the skin.

During the night, the skin (and the rest of our body) undergoes a process of renewal, shedding dead cells and replacing them with new ones, a process believed to be at its peak between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Lack of sufficient sleep disrupts this natural cycle, leading to visible signs of aging, increased skin sensitivity and a lackluster complexion.

COLLAGEN PRODUCTION SURGES

Part of this regeneration process is the increased production of collagen, the protein responsible for the skin’s elasticity and firmness. During deep sleep, the body boosts blood flow to the skin, which supports collagen production.

This helps in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and aids skin repair and hydration.

DEFEAT CORTISOL SPIKES

Sleep deprivation leads to an increase in the body’s stress hormones, particularly cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can exacerbate skin conditions such as acne,

psoriasis and eczema by increasing inflammation and skin sensitivity.

By ensuring a good night’s sleep, cortisol levels are normalized, reducing the risk of these stress-related skin issues.

REPAIR YOUR BARRIER

The skin barrier serves as the body’s defense against environmental stressors, such as pollutants and UV rays. Sleep is essential for the maintenance of this barrier function.

When we skimp on sleep, the skin’s hydration levels decrease, weakening the barrier function and making the skin more susceptible to damage and irritation. Adequate rest helps to maintain the integrity of the skin barrier, protecting it from external aggressors.

DETOX DEFENSE

Sleep also plays a crucial role in the body’s detoxification processes.

The lymphatic system, responsible for removing toxins from the body, is more active during sleep. This detoxification process is crucial for preventing oxidative stress, which can lead to premature aging and skin dullness. Moreover, sleep allows for the repair of damaged skin cells, helping to reverse the harmful effects of sun exposure and pollution.

IT TAKES TIME

To fully harness the skin-enhancing benefits of sleep, establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful sleeping environment are essential. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night, and consider incorporating a nightly skin care routine that complements the skin’s natural regenerative processes.

Yoga Tours HELICOPTER

If yoga classes inside a packed, sweaty studio or in front of a screen at home doesn’t excite you anymore, you may have moved on to yoga in a park or garden, at a vortex in Sedona or beachside in California, Hawaii or anywhere else in the world.

If those venues are getting a little ho-hum, try helicopter yoga.

Following the same general format as heli-skiing, heli-yoga tours carry individuals or small groups to a remote site accessible only by helicopter, usually within a spectacular mountain range with heart-stopping views, for an exclusive session led by a qualified instructor — hopefully one who can hold your attention in the face of such natural beauty.

Helicopter yoga flights are relatively rare worldwide, with the largest concentration appearing to be in the Canadian Rockies. Here is a sampling of the most lavish and lovely options:

RING OF FIRE

One of the priciest tours available is also one of the nearest to Northern Arizona. For $3,990 you can fly up to six passengers to a secluded cliff overlooking the Valley of Fire northeast of Las Vegas. A 75-minute private yoga session, adaptable for any skill level, will be held in the tranquil sandstone geologic playground and you’ll be flown over the Strip on your way back to reality. www.maverickhelicopter.com/ heliyoga.aspx

ARE PINNACLE OF PRACTICE

ON THE MOUNTAINTOP

This one is a steal at $1,800 for up to six riders, but it’s considerably less convenient to us in Jasper National Park, west of Edmonton, Alberta.

This three-hour tour ferries a minimum of four passengers from a nearby airport over pristine lakes, waterfalls and forests to a remote peak for exploration and a yoga lesson provided by your pilot. You’ll never feel quite the same after an experience in this setting. www.jasperhelitours.com/heliyoga

NEW ZEALAND ZONE

If you’re looking for an excuse to visit New Zealand you can do worse than signing up for a private yoga class on one of the mountain peaks of the stunning Kahurangi National Park or a super-isolated stretch of the rugged Wild West Coast beach.

Korkoro Studio’s Jeanette Ida will customize poses to your needs so you can reconnect with beauty in nature and beauty within yourself. www.helicoptersnelson.co.nz/ portfolio-item/heli-yoga

Bring High TechINTO YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN

You work hard to make your home a reflection of your personal style choosing just the right furniture, paint and flooring. Speakers, displays and high-tech components need to blend in and not stand out like a college dorm filled with tangles of wires.

81 VOL. 4, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living DESIGN

Luckily, there are tons of solutions to make speakers, displays and control components blend and disappear into walls, furniture and more.

If possible, plan ahead. If you’re designing a new space or renovating, plan your tech integration up front. This allows for hidden wiring and built-in tech solutions.

Then, be sure to choose your tech wisely. Opt for sleek, minimalist devices that won’t disrupt your aesthetic. If you need to, consult with a professional.

If possible, install your TV with the wires behind the wall for a clean and smooth look. If this isn’t an option (block walls), consider cable concealers. They come in various shapes and sizes, and run cables along walls or under carpets.

When buying furniture, look for pieces with built-in cable management systems. Entertainment centers, desks and side tables can hide cables discreetly.

And embrace the wizardry of wireless technology — from built-in wireless charging pads to Bluetooth speakers and smart devices. These can also eliminate wire clutter.

Ever wished your TV could disappear sometimes? Enter TV mirrors, which double as reflective surfaces and flawlessly blend into your living room’s aesthetics.

For more television concealment, some screens can also disguise your TV as framed artwork. Metal panels can be rigged to open and close, and cabinets can hide a TV in a pinch.

Install architectural speakers inside walls and ceilings with a grille over the opening. When finished in the same color as the surrounding area, they’re difficult to see.

If you can’t add them inside your walls, consider decorative speaker covers that come in many styles, from classic to eccentric, blending in with your décor.

For lighting, you have plenty of options. Recessed lighting,

installed into the ceiling or walls, fills the room with soft light from above while staying unobtrusive.

Cove lighting within the architectural features of the room can be used to accentuate wall textures, create a warm ambience or touch of drama.

You can even accentuate your art collection with discreet backlighting. Use concealed LED strips or panels strategically behind artworks for brilliant focal points. With all this hidden tech, controlling it effortlessly is the key. Embrace voice-activated assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant and control your smart devices, lights and concealed tech. A universal remote control also can manage all your tech and make switching between them a piece of cake.

Why not go all out and take this a step further and set up smart home automation. Program lights, shades and tech to work together with minimal effort and smooth, sleek aesthetics.

New Dimension

ART TAKES ON WITH

STATEMENT RUGS

If you want to add more art and design sophistication to your home, consider some of the surfaces you may have overlooked— especially the one underfoot.

Statement rugs with vibrant color, arresting textures and meaningful motifs will give your interior new depth and aesthetic interest.

DEFINE YOUR STYLE

Determine the style and theme of your home. Whether it’s modern, traditional, eclectic or minimalist, your rug should harmonize with the existing décor unless you’re going to be transforming it.

Look for artisanal detailing to elevate colors and themes that mesh with the rhythms already present in your space.

CHOOSE HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS

Shop for rugs made from materials like wool, silk, bamboo silk or high-quality synthetic fibers that strike a balance between elegance and durability. The list of fibers — and even metallic threads and inserts — found in luxury rugs is endless.

Wool tends to be a go-to material, by itself or blended with silk or other high-end, opulent treads. Leather and

other animal skins bring a different tone to luxury.

BOLD PATTERNS AND COLORS

Rugs with bold, eye-catching patterns make a statement. Geometric designs, abstract motifs and intricate florals add drama and sophistication. Vibrant and rich colors (including black and white) inject new energy and personality.

Determine whether you prefer jewel tones, earthy hues or playful pastels and go for colors that complement your existing decor while making a bold statement.

LAYERING AND CONTRAST

If you’re having difficulty settling on a single statement rug you can experiment with layering rugs to

create contrast and visual impact.

Pair a bold, patterned rug with a solid-colored or neutral rug for a dynamic and layered look that draws attention to the focal point. Building contrast through texture is another tool, but make sure they’re still complementary.

MIX TEXTURES

Single rugs can also incorporate a mix of textures and materials to create visual interest and depth. For example, a rug with a combination of wool, silk or viscose fibers can add luxurious texture and sheen to your space.

A large area rug with distinct textures within its surface can even delineate areas within the room, for example, a dining space versus entertainment.

BEAUTY OF IMPERFECTION:

Wabi-Sabi EMBRACING

In a world that celebrates perfection and flawlessness, the concept of wabisabi design is a refreshing alternative.

Rooted in Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, wabi-sabi is a design approach that embraces and values the inherent beauty of weathered surfaces, cracks and irregularities.

Unlike minimalism, which seeks to streamline and eliminate clutter, wabisabi celebrates the knot in the wood or the wrinkle in the linen. It’s often connected to broken ceramics mended with gold known as “kintsugi.”

In a wabi-sabi interior, less is always more. It values investing in quality objects that have a sense of history or continue to perform well despite being old.

KEY VALUES

Minimalism: Strip away the unnecessary and focus on the essence of an object or space. Eliminate excess, incorporate negative space, and let the true nature of things shine.

Natural materials: These age gracefully and develop character over time like wood, stone and metal.

Imperfection: Embracing flaws is central. Cracks, asymmetry and abnormalities are seen as marks of authenticity and individuality.

Austerity: Wabi-sabi avoids opulence and extravagance, finding beauty in understatement and promoting satisfaction with less.

Patina: Celebrate the natural wear and aging of material, whether it’s leather, iron or wood, which tells the story of an object’s journey.

Asymmetry: Unlike traditional Western design, wabi-sabi embraces the irregular and unbalanced, reflecting the organic and unpredictable nature of life.

KEYS OF USE

Interiors: Wabi-sabi interiors often feature earthy tones, natural textures and minimalism. Vintage or handcrafted furniture, preferably showing signs of wear, also are incorporated.

Pottery and ceramics: Handmade pottery with irregular shapes, asymmetrical forms and natural imperfections exemplifies this design aesthetic.

In a world dominated by mass production and relentless pursuit of perfection, wabi-sabi offers an equalizer. The philosophy encourages a change — to slow down, appreciate the present moment and find beauty in imperfections.

CONSIDER THE RIGHT COLOR TO

Brighten a Bedroom

Need to calm down a rambunctious child or workaholic partner? Want to inspire creativity and optimism in another family member?

Consider the bedroom as the place to start. After all, this is where one greets the day and welcomes the night. Applying the psychology of color may guide you in your decorating.

Although a new science, there’s evidence that certain colors help reduce stress, improve sleep and boost different emotions. No surprise that blue is considered a calming color, but so is green.

It represents positivity, soothing and calming. Being surrounded by green, or least having it to look at, is said to connect one to nature, which in turn can combat sadness and hopelessness.

It’s considered the most balanced color, the experts says. It can encourage independence and the willingness to make change. Better yet, greens can stimulate wisdom and serenity. However, beware that shades too close to yellow can be off-putting for those who suffer from anxiety.

Speaking of yellow. For some it’s great for promoting cheerfulness, energy and happiness. Considered

a motivating color, yellow also may spur one’s memory and ability to communicate.

Stay away from the intensity of too bright a yellow, but the gentler pastel shades offer lightness and playfulness to one’s surroundings.

Orange has a revitalizing effect and can be a grand color for a bedroom to promote energy and creativity.

That perfect present for a daughter turning Sweet 16 might be refreshing or adding the color pink to her bedroom. We all know it’s associated with love and tenderness, but it also encourages optimism.

While brighter shades like fuchsia are higher energy, lighter shades bring out a quiet strength.

Purple aids in imagination and self-awareness, while red brings about passion and stimulation. Note, though, you want to go for muted shades of red because bright shades can spark anger.

Before going all out and painting walls, test out some accessories. Bright pillows on a neutral bedspread, for instance. Carry it through with lamps, window treatments or a bold rug. Where you might want to go big with your color is the bed frame.

HIDDEN KITCHENS ARE TRENDING

Kitchen clutter: it’s difficult to avoid and even harder to tolerate. Especially when company knocks and your kitchen is a disaster. If the idea of a sleek, invisible kitchen gives you a warm happy feeling, it may be time for a bit of remodeling. It’s worth it — by removing prominent appliances or storage from breaking the visual flow, living spaces appear more open, larger and modern. Of course, your hidden kitchen still needs to function. Here are a few hints to get you started:

CLEAR YOUR WORKTOP

Clutter is the antithesis to this aesthetic. Ensure appliances have a space in the cupboard or hidden storage, and after you use an appliance, put it away.

ELIMINATE UPPER CABINETS

Wall cabinets announce a kitchen. Removing them allows you to get creative with the space and helps the kitchen blend in. Opt for a row of tall cabinets for a sleek look, especially if bigger appliances like ovens and fridges are built in.

HIDE YOUR PANTRY

In a hidden kitchen, disguise the pantry with hinging systems that allow the door to a large walk-in pantry to blend into a framed wall or within a bank of tall cabinet units. This can seamlessly merge and help achieve a minimalist look, especially if you hide coffee machines, kettles and toasters inside.

INTEGRATE APPLIANCES

Find appliances that can be built into cabinetry. Also, find appliances that come with panels to match your cabinet design. Apply cabinet panels and hide a stainless-steel refrigerator.

ADD SLIDING DOORS

Tall sliding doors offer a solution to hiding a kitchen when not in use and exposing it when needed. If your space can handle it, they offer a good solution for the ultimate hidden kitchen.

HIDE THE HOOD

An extractor hood is essential, so your best bet is to hide the ventilation system. Options include discreet ceiling-mounted units or down-draft systems. You can also integrate it into the background by matching it to your wall treatment.

REMOVE HARDWARE

To help hide the kitchen, avoid decorative hardware on the cabinetry. Instead, choose push-touch opening mechanisms or a channel. If you do, you’ll want matte finishes to limit fingerprints. If hardware is a must, match it to the cabinet so it disappears.

MATCH CABINETRY TO FLOOR

A neutral color scheme for both will give the effect of blending the two. If the kitchen is at the end of the space, stain the cabinets to match the floor with the grain continuing vertically up the cabinet doors.

STREAMLINE SINKS

A black sink in a black quartz countertop or a white faucet against a white large-format tile backsplash can minimize the appearance. Also, keep it simple with a single large sink undermounted or integrated into the countertop, with a slim line single hole goose neck faucet.

UPSCALE HOMES

CRY OUT FOR COOL ROOFS

For all the work people put into planning and building their luxury home, the roof that crowns it also needs special consideration. It’s an important element both structurally and aesthetically, and there are several roofing materials to consider that have different strengths and drawbacks when it comes to durability, appearance and cost effectiveness.

SLATE

Renowned for its timeless elegance and durability, slate roofing’s natural beauty, durability and resistance to fire and mold add up to a preferred option among homeowners.

While the initial cost may be higher compared to other materials, its longevity (up to 100 years) and low maintenance requirements make it worth it.

The cumulative weight of slate tiles may tax the roof frames of some houses, especially newer ones, so your roofer will need to test its strength and possibly reinforce it.

METAL

Metal roofing has become increasingly popular in pricier home construction due to its sleek appearance, longevity and energy efficiency. Options such as copper, zinc and stainless steel offer a modern aesthetic that complements contemporary architectural designs.

Metal roofing is highly durable, resistant to fire and extreme weather conditions, and requires minimal maintenance.

Metal roofing is expensive to install, potentially more than replacing multiple shingle roofs over time. It may not complement traditional home styles and not everybody loves hearing the sound of raindrops on a metal roof, at least regularly.

CLAY OR CONCRETE TILES

Clay or concrete tiles add a touch of Mediterranean inspiration to homes with their distinctive shapes and rich colors. These roofing materials are highly durable, weatherresistant and energy-efficient.

Additionally, clay and concrete tiles require minimal maintenance and can last for decades, making them a valuable investment.

Cost and total weight are concerns, and tile roofs’ predominance throughout the region may send some homeowners looking for something apart from the norm.

MORE POSSIBILITIES

Wood or shake shingles are less durable but have a traditional look many people love. Synthetic materials that mimic other roof types are showing promise, but many are too new to have proven their long-term performance.
