Let’s think high-end, exclusive, classy, swank or downright posh.
How about flying your private plane to a silent retreat in Thailand, Italy or closer to home, Big Sur?
We give you some ins and outs about getting a pilot’s license, as well as a glance at the virtues of these exclusive retreats that encourage complete silence. Studies reveal that silence can help learning, memory, clarity, resilience — executive functioning.
Perhaps you worry about the safety of your family and are considering a bunker. An Atlas missile silo in Kansas has been converted to luxury condos with a pool, a theater, a rock-climbing wall and a dog park. Penthouse suites go for $1.5 million up to $4.5 million. We tell you about others.
If you want to stay closer to home for your luxuriating and retreating, consider an indoor pool. This is a pricey proposition, but at least you don’t have to worry about leaves clogging the drain.
Maybe you want to rethink your home entirely.
Today’s high-end homebuyer wants to meld wellness, sustainability and eco-friendly design. The bells and whistles include such things as solar panels, rain barrels, infrared saunas, steam showers, lighting that modulates to circadian rhythms, sound therapy rooms and biophlilic design (incorporating the outdoors inside).

The folks at McFerrin Real Estate in Boise, Idaho, know a little something about the upscale real estate market. Their clients often want more than a gorgeous home in the mountains. For many, wellness is one of their top priorities in selecting their home, and the market has responded with gusto.
According to Realtors®, one of the most significant trends for their high-end clients committed to wellness is an emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly design. Those who have the budget to afford it can incorporate things like solar panels, recycled materials, rain barrels and other ways of using nature to elevate their homes.
Added bonuses include energy efficiency and a feeling of being in tune with the environment.
Creating a spa-like space is at the top of the luxury homebuyer’s list. Amenities range from infrared saunas to steam showers, soaking tubs in the bathrooms to natural stone elements that can transform a home into a retreat.
Another wellness trend with homebuyers is a “biophilic design,” one that incorporates the outdoors into the indoors. That may be floorto-ceiling windows that open out to the garden, or inside plants that add a sense of serenity and connection to nature. This trend emphasizes the natural, from colors to texture, relying on data that says peace of mind is connected to “bathing” in nature.
Other amenities may include cold plunge pools and areas specifically set aside for massages. A private gym is practically mandatory, complete with advanced equipment that ties to the client’s technology. And speaking of technology, the home needs to be tricked out to remove toxins in the air and water, lighting that adapts to circadian rhythms, tech that tracks sleep and fitness and fine-tuned climate control. Another technological addition might be a suite for telemedicine consultations with physicians or other health care providers.
The luxury sustainable home must be free of toxins. This means that the structure is built from sustainable wood and free of any type of furniture that includes plastic or formaldehyde. Paint needs to be zero
VOC (volatile organic compounds), which can cause strong reactions in people with allergies. Homeowners also can add materials that reduce electromagnetic field exposure. It isn’t all technology and toxin awareness.
These luxury wellness homes may include a sleep sanctuary for inducing deep sleep; wellness kitchens that are designed to support the cook who’s whipping up healthy meals, complete with organic gardens and herb pots; sound therapy rooms for immersive audio treatments; and creativity studios to foster talent and provide space for stress-reducing expressions through music, art and writing.
There are planned communities that include wellness amenities and neighborhoods built by people who share the same commitments to wellness and sustainability. Together they thrive.

hatever your job or profession — even if you’re retired — the idea of coming home can fill you with joy and expectation. Most of us want to come home to a sanctuary of calm, but that doesn’t happen overnight. Creating a space that beckons and restores takes time and intention.
The design experts at Slow Living LDN have loads of ideas on how to design a calming space that speaks to your tastes and interests. Your first choice is the color palette, and designers recommend choosing colors that speak to you.
Ignore trends: not every home has to be “griege” or white. When mixing colors, however, they recommend using colors from the opposite end of the color wheel to complement each other. Painting walls and ceilings in the same color gives visual continuity and produces a feeling of calm.
Simplicity is key to giving that sense of peace. Tranquility comes from a lack of distraction, and clutter can derail us from our goal. If you’re due for a declutter, enlist the help of a professional organizer or friend to separate what’s essential and what can go.
Another recommendation from the experts is to take a look at the products around you, the packaging and labels, colors and brands that collide. Kitchen and bath products tend to shout out their logos, creating a cacophony of color. For a uniform effect, take products out of their original packages and store them
in glass, wood or baskets to give a more organic feel.
Before the advent of electricity, our bodies were in tune with the rising and setting of the sun, determined by circadian rhythms. Now, we can add lighting in ways that calm and connect us to the time of day and even the seasons of the year.
Soft lighting, natural light from windows and skylights and spotlights for shelves, cooking spaces and breakfast nooks can give moods that enhance our well-being. Dimmer switches can make all the difference in creating the right atmosphere for relaxation.
Bringing the muted tones of nature into your home is another way to create a space that calms the nerves after a hard day at work. Deep forest greens, natural stone, woods and textiles connect us to the outdoors. Houseplants and flowers provide visual appeal while also bringing us joy.
These same principles can apply to your outside space. Your backyard, patio, porches and gardens reflect who you are and what you love. Maybe a colorful, riotous garden gives you a sense of calm — things don’t have to be monotone to give you peace. We know that outdoor water features are a sure-fire way to bring that feeling of tranquility into your private space, blending nature with your favorite backyard escape.
We all know we’re supposed to stay out of the sun and keep protected with sunscreen and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing when we’re in it. But we’re all fallible, just like our skin.
The sun’s UV rays have been linked to severe damage and aging throughout the skin’s layers, with the skin barrier (stratum corneum in medical terminology) as the first line of defense. The rays cause cracking and chapping that leaves the outer layer of skin vulnerable to inflammation, peeling and infection.
These are some of the warning signs that your skin barrier has been compromised by sun exposure and/ or other causes. Others include unusual dryness or oiliness, sensitivity to skin care products that previously didn’t have any negative effect and increased breakouts.
Fortifying the top layer of skin is a project that likely will take a couple of weeks and will rely as much on what you don’t do as what you do.
The old “hydrate, hydrate, hydrate” rule is one to follow closely when coming back from a skin

barrier breach. The ideal way to do this is to pare down your skin care routine to a very gentle cleanser, a moisture-boosting serum and a rich, luscious barrier-repair cream. If your skin is especially tight and dry, which is likely to happen after sun damage, you can slug on an occlusive ointment to help ensure that moisture doesn’t go anywhere. And of course, apply sunscreen before you go outdoors and reapply every two hours that you spend there.
Steer clear of any potential
irritant or exfoliant, including retinol, AHAs, BHAs and even vitamin C during this period when you’re reconstructing your skin barrier. They’re all going to work against you, so wait until your symptoms have subsided for a week before you start slowly adding them back in. If at-home care doesn’t seem to be resolving your issue or it’s aggravating pre-existing skin conditions like eczema, it’s a good idea to book time with your dermatologist.
h, summer… that time when we can relax and recalibrate. Between family vacations and catching up on projects around the house, the last thing you may be thinking about is your own wellness. Think again. Summer is the perfect time to focus on whole-body harmony, something that’s more than a mantra. It’s a way of life. What exactly is “wholebody harmony?” The people at NaturalWellbeing.com describe it this way: “One reaches mind and body harmony when they prioritize both physical and mental health.” The connection between the two is evident in how our “gut health” can affect our moods, and how poor physical conditioning can impact our mental health.
A big glass of water first thing in the morning will start your day right, helping with focus, energy and productivity. Begin your day with water before making that first cup of coffee or tea which can dehydrate. Your personalized water bottle may be covered in bling or plastered with stickers: carry it with you and keep it close to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Whenever you can, get outside and breathe some fresh air. A 15-minute
walk can clear your head, work your glutes and increase the flow of oxygen to your brain and body. Notice your environment and let it give you the space and serenity that inspires whole-body harmony.
The benefits of meditation are numerous, yet we forget to meditate or think it’s too hard. Just a few minutes of deep breathing can benefit your heart and your mind. Instead of stewing at that stoplight, take in four deep breaths through your nose; hold each for
eight counts, then release through your mouth. You don’t have to take classes to meditate, but if you need more instruction, there are tools on the internet to help.
Learn to cook some of your favorite recipes to nourish your body and your mind. You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to whip up nutritious, wholesome meals that serve your body and your soul. Prep work can be simple, and lessprocessed food is better. Your body and your budget will thank you.

hile standing in a long security line at the airport recently I let my mind wander. How could I escape the indignity of this travel ritual, racing to load my shoes, laptop and luggage into a bucket before standing with my arms up to be scanned like I’m being robbed? Suddenly, it occurred to me: I could learn to fly a plane myself!
Reality hit sooner than a TSA agent finding more than three fluid ounces of liquid in a carry-on. First, I get vertigo in an elevator. Second, flying is an expensive hobby. Getting a private pilot license can cost upward of $15,000 to $20,000. And getting a used six-seat Cessna Citation CJ3 can cost around $2.5 million, with larger jets going into the tens of millions.
But a girl can dream, so dream with me as I explore the world of private planes.
A private pilot license (PPL) requires the completion of ground school in addition to 35 to 40 hours in the cockpit, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Ground school teaches about the principles of aviation, and flight school gets you into the air with an instructor to help you learn in real time.
Costs depend on the certificate you are looking for as well as fees for testing and supplies. Getting the license is only the beginning.
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association reported an increase in new business jet transactions, and the market for used jets is growing. According to
website Luxaviation.com, owning a plane becomes a justifiable expense if you spend 200 to 300 hours annually on commercial or chartered flights. Here are a few things to think about before sinking your money into a private plane:
• What are your needs? Do you want to get from here to there without going through those dreaded security lines, like me, or are you an adventurer hoping to see the world from 10,000 feet? Is this a romance or a practical solution to your geography? In Alaska, people fly small aircraft to get to places where there aren’t any roads or airports. Think about how, and how often, you’ll fly.
• How deep are your pockets? Flight school and the cost of a plane are only part of your investment. Maintenance, crew salaries, insurance and hangar fees can add up. Maybe you don’t want to learn to fly but you want the convenience of being able to go where you want to go, when you want to go there. That means you’ll have to pay for a pilot.
• Is privacy an issue? Then a private plane is for you. There’s a reason we don’t bump into Cher at the airport. Most likely she and her entourage are snacking and enjoying the view from the comfort of her private jet.
In the world of luxury living, wellness isn’t a destination — it’s a rhythm. When infused with elegance and intention, everyday moments become restorative, grounding and transformational. These seven rituals bring that philosophy to life, helping you flourish from morning to night. When your day is defined by meaningful, discerning choices, you don’t just live well — you thrive.
SUNRISE STILLNESS
Begin each day with 10 to 15 minutes of silence, breathwork or guided meditation in a serene space. Whether it’s a private terrace or spa-like bathroom, create a morning sanctuary where your mind can arrive before your schedule does.
ELIXIRS WITH PURPOSE
Ditch the caffeine-driven coffee habit for a morning tonic infused with adaptogens, collagen or nootropics. Served in elegant glassware or a Japanese-style tea set, this ritual becomes a quiet luxury that nourishes your body and helps you focus.
MOVEMENT, ELEVATED
Schedule 45 to 60 minutes for mindful movement — yoga, strength training or outdoor
cardio — with a personal trainer or tailored digital program. The goal isn’t to burn out, but to energize with grace and intention.
MIDDAY RESET
Between meetings or errands, take a wellness pause. Whether that’s 10 minutes of breathwork in a sunlit room or a walk through your landscaped garden, these moments refresh both focus and mood.
Luxury wellness means fueling your body with nutrient-rich, beautiful meals — whether prepared by a private chef or curated from local organic markets. Slow down, savor
every bite and make lunch a nourishing experience, not a task.
EVENING WIND-DOWN
Signal the body to relax with an evening ritual like an infrared sauna session, magnesium foot soak or guided stretching. Pair with calming scents like vetiver or sandalwood and allow the tension of the day to melt away.
SLEEP LIKE YOU MEAN IT
Design your sleep environment with intention: acquire cooling linens, blackout drapes, a luxury mattress and sleep-enhancing technology like ambient noise machines or circadian lighting. End the day disconnected, supported and ready to restore.

If the thought of being enclosed in a bunker makes you apprehensive, don’t worry. These upscale bunkers offer a luxury living situation. Marry “safe house” with “mansion” and you’ll find some billionaire bunkers.
Just in case there is an apocalypse, the “Tech Bros” are well prepared. Otherwise known as “doomsday bunkers” or “luxury safe houses,” these structures are built to hedge their bets with havens complete with state-of-the-art security systems, blast-proof doors and all the comforts of home.
From Spyscape.com we learned that Cold War bunkers have been converted to condos and hangouts where once there were command centers. Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn, is quoted in the New Yorker as saying that at least 50% of Silicon Valley’s top echelon have bunkers or escape plans in the event our world changes dramatically.
Bunkers offer comfort and control in an otherwise unsafe world. They’re also a new status symbol, offering access to water, power and food supply. Some bunkers
have indoor swimming pools, accommodations for guests, landscaping and water treatments. Nestled in a former nuclear center outside of Prague, The Oppidum is the world’s largest underground safe house complete with helipad and defense system. The name originates from the project between the USSR and Czechoslovakia in the 1980s.
A German wartime facility is now Vivos, a shelter where $2.2 million buys a private apartment. The site encompasses 43,000 square feet above ground and 3 miles of tunnels. Pools, theaters and gyms are custom features.
In Edgemont, South Dakota, Vivos xPoint is promoted as a
place that’s strategically located.
Once a retired army base, the Army Corps of Engineers configured Vivos xPoint as a munitions fortress from 1942 to 1967. Far from military nuclear targets, Vivos xPoint is away from lakes that might pose a threat. Residents must upgrade their interiors through the owners for $25,000 to $200,000. That Army Corps of Engineers was busy in Kansas, too. The Atlas missile silo there has been converted to luxury condos with a pool, a theater, a rockclimbing wall and a dog park. You can get in on this deal for $1.5 million up to $4.5 million for a penthouse suite.
Apple Music is joining forces with Universal Music Group to introduce Sound Therapy, an innovative audio wellness collection designed to help listeners attain clearer focus, deeper relaxation and better sleep.
Sound Therapy blends songs subscribers already know and love with special sound waves designed to enhance users’ daily routines, while retaining the artist’s original vision. Backed by scientific research and powered by Universal Music Group’s proprietary audio technologies, Sound Therapy harnesses the power of sound waves, psychoacoustics and cognitive science to help listeners relax or focus the mind.
The collection was crafted by a team of producers, scientists and audio engineers at Sollos, a music-wellness venture incubated within Universal Music Group. Sound Therapy features extended, instrumental and reimagined versions of popular tracks from artists such as Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Ludovico Einaudi, AURORA, Jhené Aiko, Chelsea Cutler and Jeremy Zucker.
Sound Therapy features three categories — focus, relax and sleep. Songs have been enhanced with auditory beats or colored noise to help encourage specific brain responses. Gamma waves and white noise — a whoosh-like combination of every sound frequency — may help with focusing; theta waves could aid in relaxation; and delta waves and pink noise — a deeper, gentler variation akin to rain or wind — might assist in achieving better sleep.
Apple has long been committed to enabling its customers to lead healthier, more active lives through offerings like
Apple Watch, HealthKit, and Apple
Fitness+. The company will work closely with Sollos and UMG to further establish scientific evidence supporting music and audio for improved wellbeing, and finding inclusive ways to bring these benefits to people around the world.
The Focus category is designed to support improved cognitive performance and concentration, tapping into the power of gamma auditory beats to help listeners get in the mindset to achieve optimum focus. White noise masks distracting sounds to help listeners stay in the moment.

Etiquette may seem an old-fashioned word, but it’s the well-mannered grease that keeps our world spinning. Nowhere is etiquette more appreciated than in a museum where precious objects, priceless art and untold treasures are carefully stored and displayed.
First, know that museums are there for you and others to enjoy. You may be at a small museum in your hometown or at a world-famous museum like the Guggenheim in New York City… wherever you are, the same rules generally apply. Approach a trip to the museum as you would any cultural event, conscious of the people who surround you.
When you come into the museum, use the coat check if you can for packages and umbrellas. (Tip the cheerful museum workers on the way out!) You’ve invested in an experience, and now you want to get the most out of your visit. Typically museums have a handout, highlighting the various exhibits along with a map, or you can get the museum’s app if they have one.
If you’re with fellow art aficionados, agree on a plan for which exhibits you want to see and your approach.
Many museums offer tours with trained docents, volunteers who are passionate about art and who train diligently to learn about the exhibits. If you can, jump onto a docent tour and hear about the art directly from them. Take time to linger over the art, reading labels as you go. But there are others who may want to see the same painting or label, so think of a museum as a large car park — you may have to merge to allow someone else in.
One way to approach a museum visit is to “go with the flow.” Often an exhibit will have a definite entrance followed by room after room. Be aware of the pace of others, with a special awareness of seniors or those with disabilities. Make room for others so everyone can enjoy.
Unless an exhibit is designed as a sensory experience, the cardinal rule of museum etiquette is: do not touch the art. It’s so-o-o tempting sometimes, especially with textile art like quilts and large tactile installations. But museums are there to protect and preserve, and the oil on our hands can break down the elements of a piece of art. There are often lines on the floor — please don’t cross the line. If you do, a buzzer will sound, and you’ll get a kind but firm lecture from one of the guards to stay clear. Another breach of etiquette is using flash photography when taking photos, if photos are allowed. Some exhibits prohibit photography altogether as a way to protect artists’ copyrights. Whatever the rules, think of the museum as someone’s home and respect the contents.

What is a capsule wardrobe?
Simply put, a capsule wardrobe is a small selection of clothing that is used to create a variety of different looks. These items are interchangeable and designed to maximize the number of outfits you can put together. Here are a few of the benefits to creating a capsule wardrobe.
1. With fewer options you have fewer decisions to make. Getting dressed is easy and fun when you have items you love and feel confident in.
2. Having a capsule wardrobe saves money. By investing in versatile and high-quality items that you love, you are less prone
to making impulse purchases. Shopping with intention allows you to truly appreciate the items in your closet.
3. A capsule wardrobe is good for the environment! Buying less clothing is good for the oceans and leaves less clothing in landfills.
HOW DO YOU CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
Start with a neutral palette. Black is an obvious choice, but you can also consider beige, gray or cream. Choose what works best with your skin tone and hair. Bright colors and patterns can be added later; the neutral color is
your foundation to build upon.
WHAT PIECES ARE IN A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
Basic tees and tanks are a great way to start building your capsule wardrobe. While it may be tempting, this is not a place for inexpensive and poor-quality pieces. You will be wearing these items many times and cheap tees stretch out, lose shape and do not hold up with repeated washing. Both a crew neck and a V-neck option are great to have. A quality tank is essential for layering, so once again invest in ones that stand the test of time.
A fabulous pair (or two) of denim jeans. With so many styles available, find the most flattering fit for your body. A classic straight-leg in a medium wash is always in style. A bootcut or flare also is a good choice. A leather or faux-leather jacket is a must-have item. It’s versatile and is a great addition to both casual and dressy outfits. Ideal for many different seasons it adds a touch of elegance. Choose high quality accessories. Your handbag, scarves and jewelry will transform your outfit to something special. Both boutiques and department stores can help you put together your capsule wardrobe.
Whether you’re escaping the heat indoors or seeking a new way to stay centered and strong, reformer Pilates and aerial yoga offer an elevated experience that aligns body and mind.
Reformer Pilates uses a sleek, springloaded machine to add resistance and precision to your workout. Unlike mat Pilates, the reformer builds strength and length simultaneously. Think toned arms, a tighter core and better posture — all without breaking a sweat in the traditional sense.
It’s low-impact but highly effective, making it a favorite among dancers, athletes and anyone who values sculpted results with minimal joint strain.
What makes reformer Pilates ideal for summer? It targets deep muscle groups without overheating the body. Sessions are typically held in airy studios with a serene, spa-like atmosphere — perfect for those who prefer a calm, controlled environment over loud gyms. It’s fitness, refined.
Aerial yoga , on the other hand, flips your perspective — literally. Using a
silk hammock suspended from the ceiling, this practice combines elements of yoga, Pilates and aerial acrobatics. It challenges balance, improves flexibility and decompresses the spine, all while giving you the exhilarating feeling of flight. Plus, it’s Instagram gold.
Beyond aesthetics, aerial yoga is a powerful tool for body awareness and mental clarity. The gentle inversions promote circulation and relaxation, making it an ideal complement to reformer Pilates’ grounding strength. Together, they form a balanced routine that emphasizes grace, control and mindful movement.
Aerial silks is another form of exercise that’s gaining popularity and is often confused with aerial yoga. Participants use long strips of fabric hanging from the ceiling to climb and wrap themselves to perform acrobatic movements. This requires more strength and agility than most aerial yoga poses and offers a creative, performative outlet.

hen Don, a partner in an accounting firm, works out, he goes all out. As a triathlete, he has competed all over the country with a special talent for biking. In his office there is a bicycle sculpture hanging behind his desk, and he spends time with others in a bike club sponsored by the local bike shop, racking up the miles before each triathlon. Don has another group of friends: his bourbon buddies. They get together monthly to sit around a fire and talk, drinking whiskey and bourbon and bonding as men are wont to do (cigars may be involved). The balance of exercise along with a healthy diet of friendship and drink makes for one happy man.
We’ve seen an uptick in whiskey tastings, wine tastings and other festive gatherings where people come to learn about spirits. Whether we’re talking “white goods” (tequila, gin) or “brown goods” (whiskey, bourbon), the goal is to get together with friends, enjoy each other’s company and have a good stiff drink. Combining exercise with alcohol is another trend with some studios offering wine bars, and 10K races often include free tickets to the beer tent, even if it’s 9 a.m. How this combination affects one’s body depends on a variety of factors. Height and weight will determine how much alcohol a body can absorb. If you want to make sure alcohol consumption doesn’t mess with your fitness goals,
start tracking your progress. Notice if the occasional adult beverage has any impact on your stats and adjust accordingly.
A well-mannered whiskey tasting with your friends might leave you feeling OK the next day, but a wild night on the town will cause dehydration and most assuredly affect athletic performance.
Another hitch to drinking and training is the “C” word: calories. Alcohol converts to sugar in our bloodstream and provides empty calories. Exercising while hung over decreases glucose, which provides fuel to our bodies, so we may end up sluggish and thirsty. Serious athletes know the connection between stamina, strength and good nutrition, so they may stay away from alcohol-fueled events, especially before a competition.
While there is no “healthy” amount of alcohol, new recommendations call for only one drink a day for women, two for men. Again, body size and mass make a big difference in determining alcohol’s effect.
Statistics show that those who enjoy working out at the gym also enjoy the occasional social drink. Without a pledge of abstinence, most people who work out can drink in moderation. If you aren’t training for a particular event, or limited by a special diet or regime, it’s up to you to balance the two. Indeed, being at a gym can foster friendships and connections that lead to social connections, dinners out and cocktails.

etting from one place to another has rarely been considered the most luxurious part of taking a luxury vacation — it’s something to be tolerated, with fantastic hotel rooms, spas, restaurants and attractions waiting on the other end. However, much effort has been put into developing highend products that almost make you forget you’re neither here nor there. Here are a few small wonders that can transform your travels.
Made from the fine cashmere of the Changthangicq goat’s undercoat, pashmina is renowned for its softness, lightness and warmth and has been a symbol of wealth and status in the Himalayas it originated from and the rest of the world. Available in an infinite variety of colors and prints, its traveling superpower is the number of functions it serves (scarf, belt, bag décor, blanket, etc.) and its ability to fold into a barely there square when not in use.
These wonderful little lifesavers have been making it easier to cram your carry-on full of clothes and stay away from the chaos of the baggage
claim, and if that’s not possible you can still downsize your luggage for much easier transport through airports and in and out of vehicles. You’ll arrive at your destination so much more refreshed! Thule, Eagle Creek, Osprey, Monos, REI, CALPAK and Travelpro are brands that sell high capacity, high quality cubes.
NECK PILLOWS AND SLEEP MASKS
These essentials have been evolving over the years to support the sleep ambitions of an ever-more discerning travel public. Classic u-shaped pillows are available with leather, shearling and other superlative coverings, while updated ones have a wraparound design that offers customized support and a chic look similar to a blanket scarf. Sleep masks are similarly available in increasingly posh coverings for a dreamy respite —cashmere cuddled to your face, anyone? And if that’s not enough for you, pick up a Bluetoothenabled mask to connect yourself to your favorite tunes or “color” of background noise: white, pink or brown.

eonardo da Vinci, the great artist and scientist, said “Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence.” The concept that silence is golden is as old as time, but in our busy, noisy world, it’s hard to imagine taking a break and entering a world where all is quiet. With some planning and financial resources, you can escape from the madding crowd by visiting any number of luxury silent retreats throughout the world. Once thought to be the province of monks and nuns, silent retreats are available to anyone who can afford them, offering a chance to recalibrate your soul. These retreats detach you from the digital life and the demands of social media.
You’ll hear testimony from those like Oprah, Emma Watson and actor/model Lupita Nyong’o, who raved about her retreat experience on Ethos, a travel, culture and beauty website. “The heart of the program is about unclutching from attachments…” she said, adding “…learning to ‘unclutch’ from that control makes it easier to exist.” Silent retreats encourage complete silence in an environment free from distractions, particularly technology. You don’t have to be famous to sign up for a silent retreat. It does help to be wealthy, though. The average cost of services can be between $2,000 and $3,000 for a couple of days excluding cost of travel. Spas offer silent retreats throughout the world, from California to Costa Rica, from Thailand to Spain and everywhere in between. Depending on where you go and how long you stay, the investment can be substantial.
Your return on investment also can be substantial, according to studies tracking the benefits of silent retreats. Time spent in silence contributes to improved attention spans, sharper memory and an elevation in executive functioning. Research shows silence can generate new brain cell growth that controls learning and memory. When meditation is combined with silence, the experience provides clarity and resilience.
If a silent retreat is on your bucket list, here are some recommendations:
• Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California. The institute was established in 1962 and is an iconic destination for those seeking growth and healing. Perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Esalen is synonymous with meditation.
• Eremito Hotelito Del Aloma, Italy. Fashioned after a monastery, Eremito provides solo time in a medieval setting without Wi-Fi, TV or other distractions from the outer world. Each guest room is a celluze or cell made of stone, very monk-like, and the day begins with sunrise meditation and meals served in silence.
• Kamalaya Wellness Retreat, Thailand. Following the Buddhist monk tradition, Kamalaya combines silent reflection with personal coaching to help people break free from their past. Like the other retreats, they offer a menu of activities and services, and you get to choose how much silence you want to experience.

Aging like fine wine” may be a cliched compliment, but it is accurate, as long as you keep the emphasis on “fine.” The good news is that most wine is ready for the drinking as soon as you buy it, no decades-long storage arrangements needed!
The aging process of wine is affected by a complex interplay of biological and environmental factors, including the makeup of the wine and the level of oxidation. The vast majority produced today are crafted with the intent of yielding peak taste almost instantly. Estimates of how many bottles of wine are intended to be consumed more than 12 months out from purchase vary but the number is generally very low, around 1% to 5%.
So, what is it that sets these elite bottles apart?
Tannins are naturally occurring polyphenols found in many plants. They are abundant in grape skins, seeds and stems and the oak of most wine barrels, and are found in other foods derived from plants including coffee and chocolate. They help defend plants against insects and other animals in nature.
A finely struck balance between grape tannin and wood tannin is crucial to creating a wine that will “smooth out” over time as the tannins break down.
Acid prolongs the longevity of wine and can come from a few sources. Potassium
in the soil grapes grow in can raise the pH level, while the grapes themselves have high acidity before they ripen, holding onto more of that property if they are grown in cooler climates. Winemakers in warm climates can add tartaric acid to grape juice if it seems to be ripening too quickly and if acidity is getting too high, more likely in a cooler climate, they can take steps to trigger malolactic fermentation, which produces gentler lactic acid.
A wine’s alcohol level is tied closely to the level of sugar in the grapes it’s made from, but too much alcohol in nonfortified wines can kick it over to the vinegary side. Wines from warmer climates such as California and Australia come from grapes that have spent more time ripening and developing their sugar content, but other factors can influence alcohol content. More time spent in fermentation can boost alcohol content along with chaptalization, or adding sugar to underripe grape juice.
Sugars can have a huge effect on the graceful aging of wine, though again, you can have too much of this good thing. Excessive residual sugar can leave a wine vulnerable to spoilage, but the right level can contribute to the complexity and flavor profile, especially for sweet wines. Dry wines are popular for aging but fortified wines can be the all-time champs in this regard.

There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep to make us feel alive and restored. Sleep regenerates our body cells, gives our brain time to process and allows us to work out issues in our dreams. However, if you leave it up to chance, you may not get to experience the kind of deep sleep we need to recover from our day’s labor.
Enter the sleep sanctuary, a blend of interior design, ergonomics and good oldfashioned common sense.
Especially in Arizona where nights can be hot long after the sun has gone down, we need to create a space that protects us from the elements and has all the benefits of a luxury spa. Where to start?
Perhaps it goes without saying that you need to have a good, supportive bed to begin creating your sleep sanctuary. But there’s more to the bed than a good mattress. Experts on Reddit recommend positioning your bed against a solid wall versus a window. Good feng shui calls for you to make sure you can access the bed on either side. Try to stay away from any air vents that may blow on you, and if you have a headboard, secure it so it doesn’t rattle.
Now, the linen. The internet is replete with websites claiming their linen will help you sleep the sleep of the righteous. Linen, silk, sateen, cotton — all natural fibers are touted. Don’t use polyester fabric — it doesn’t breathe, and it lacks that luxury quality we’re looking for in a sleep sanctuary.
Accessories and décor should of course reflect your tastes and passions. Colors best known for relaxation include soft blues, muted greens and lavender, preferably matte versus glossy finish. The goal is to reduce stimulation and calm your brain before bedtime. A few things to think about: cable management makes the difference between a good night’s sleep and tossing and turning. Any routers with blinking lights? OUT. Cord covers can hide the chaos of your
devices, and all good therapists recommend not sleeping with your phone in the same room. You can add an air purifier and install a ceiling fan. If you’re bothered by sirens in the distance, get a white noise machine. The sound will lull you to sleep like a baby. If you have a green (enough) thumb, bring in some plants that help clean the air like peace lilies and Mother-in-law’s tongue or snake plants. The temperature of the room makes a big difference, too. Keep the room cool at 6067° F with 40-60% humidity.
Sleep is triggered heavily by exposure to light. Make sure your lamps and overhead lights are smart bulbs with warm tones. Use blackout curtains to ensure you get those crucial eight hours of sleep a night. And sleep tight.

Women love to share their beauty secrets. From the days of Cleopatra to today’s Kardashians, women have swapped stories about makeup, cleansers and potions. Now comes a product that has the world of aesthetics all abuzz. From Kim K to Jennifer Aniston, Hollywood royalty are reported to be singing the praises of Rejuran® from the rooftops.
In pursuit of the fountain of youth, women and cosmetologists have turned to an unlikely source: salmon sperm. The active ingredient within salmon testicle DNA is polydeoxyribonucleotide or PDRN. According to studies, this can increase collagen production, which adds firmness and hydration to the skin, restoring fullness and elasticity.
Medical spas and aestheticians the world over have jumped on the PDRN bandwagon in response to market demand. Rejuran is the brand name for a series of products that can be used for various outcomes, depending on the client’s needs. Based on the treatment of choice, Rejuran can help with hyper-hydration, reduction of pores, soothing inflammation and a balance of oil and moisture in the skin.
The origin of PDRN is South Korea where it was launched in 2017. The injection
of Rejuran is approved in Europe and Korea; however, the process has not been approved yet by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Physicians in the U.S. are using Rejuran topically in conjunction with other treatments such as laser and micro-needling.
The ideal client for Rejuran is anyone who would like to refresh their skin and who’s willing to go through the treatments to get there. Your treatment plan will be customized. Once your skin is numbed with a topical product, Rejuran is applied. For it to be absorbed by the skin the skin barrier has to be disrupted, usually through laser, microneedling or a plasma treatment. Boosters may be used with a second treatment, followed by a third treatment as a mask.
The secret to Rejuran is PDRN, but it also contains concentrated amino acids and hyaluronic acid that together strengthen the skin barrier and help the skin generate essential proteins. These proteins help maintain your skin hydration and help you glow from the inside out.
In a world that has long glorified youth, the rise of the pro-aging trend in cosmetics represents a shift toward embracing the natural beauty of growing older. A more holistic and positive approach to aging is emerging, empowering individuals to embrace every stage of life with grace and confidence.
For decades, the beauty industry has been dominated by the pursuit of youth. Advertisements have bombarded consumers with promises of wrinkle-free skin, equating beauty with the absence of age. Products labeled “anti-aging” have been a staple in the cosmetic aisles, feeding into a narrative that aging is something to be fought against or even feared.
However, this anti-aging narrative has begun to lose its appeal.
Consumers are becoming disillusioned with the idea that aging is a problem to be solved. Instead, they are embracing the concept that aging is a natural, beautiful process that should be celebrated.
This shift in mindset is at the heart of the pro-aging movement, which advocates for a more inclusive and realistic portrayal of beauty.
The pro-aging trend is redefining what it means to be beautiful. This movement encourages individuals to take pride in their wrinkles, gray hair and other markers of experience and wisdom. The emphasis is on self-care, self-love and authenticity. This change in perspective reflects broader societal shifts. As the global
population ages, the traditional ideals of beauty are being challenged. Women and men alike are seeking products that enhance their natural beauty, regardless of age. This has led to the rise of brands like RMS Beauty and Mutha Beauty catering to the needs of older consumers, offering products that nourish and support aging skin.
The media and social media influencers have played a significant role in promoting the pro-aging trend. Older celebrities and influencers are speaking out against ageism and promoting a more positive view of aging. They share their own experiences with aging, often highlighting the ways in which they feel more confident and comfortable than ever before.
Campaigns featuring older models like Maye Musk and Helen Mirren have resonated with consumers of all ages, showing beauty is not confined to youth.
Formulations that focus on hydration, elasticity and skin health are becoming more prevalent, with less emphasis on promises to reverse aging.
The rise of pro-aging is influencing the way consumers interact with beauty products. There is a growing interest in skin care routines that prioritize long-term health over short-term fixes. This includes a focus on ingredients that support skin’s natural aging process, such as antioxidants, peptides and ceramides, which help to maintain skin integrity and resilience.
Embracing a lifestyle rooted in health and wellness requires thoughtful living, nurtured vitality, and informed choices. However, even the most dedicated individuals can unknowingly adopt habits that detract from their well-being.
A robust fitness routine is the cornerstone of physical and mental resilience, yet even the strongest need time to recover. Overtraining can drain the body of energy, cause chronic joint discomfort, disrupt hormonal balance and weaken immunity. Prioritizing moments of restoration as an integral part of your regimen, including rest days, quality sleep and moments of physical stillness, helps rejuvenate the body and spirit.
The practice of clean eating has gained notable acclaim, but when devotion shifts to obsession, it can evolve into orthorexia — an intense preoccupation with only “pure” foods. This mindset can restrict joy, create social barriers and provoke nutrient deficiencies when entire food categories are dismissed. Balance is essential. A lifestyle that welcomes moments of indulgence makes health sustainable and far more enjoyable.
Physical health often steals the spotlight, leaving mental
health in the wings. The relentless pursuit of physical fitness without acknowledging emotional wellbeing may foster stress and exhaustion that seeps into every part of life. Stress disrupts sleep, impairs immunity and complicates digestion, silently undermining physical health. Nurturing the mind with mindfulness practices, meditation or professional guidance adds tranquility and deepens the joy of living. While supplements are convenient, they should be viewed as enhancements. Whole foods, vibrant with fiber and natural compounds, provide nourishment that isolated supplements cannot fully replicate. Relying too heavily on pills or powders can disrupt the body’s natural balance and invite risks of toxicity. Elevating
your diet with nutrient-rich, fresh foods and using supplements under the watchful eye of a health expert when necessary ensures a balanced approach to well-being. Lastly, the allure of “healthy” processed foods must be approached with discernment. Protein bars, low-fat snacks and sugar-free drinks often carry artificial additives, sweeteners and processed elements that may hinder digestion and impact blood sugar levels. Indulge instead in the simplicity of minimally processed delights — such as nuts, cheeses and fresh seasonal fruits — that offer genuine nourishment. By recognizing these hidden habits, even those well-versed in health can refine their approach, ensuring a balanced journey toward holistic wellness.

he Arizona desert has its own haunting beauty, especially in spring and summer when the cacti bloom and the clouds cause mind-blowing sunsets. The desert also wreaks havoc with our skin, exposing us to ultra-violet rays that can cause everything from a painful sunburn to melanoma, an often-deadly skin cancer.
To live and work in the desert means we have to take the offensive when it comes to skin care.
Before you walk out the door in the morning, you’ll need a beauty routine to protect your skin from those deadly rays while also bringing out your most charming features. Dermatologists familiar with the risks of Arizona sunshine advise a moisturizer that contains at least 30 SPF, and if your foundation includes sunscreen, that’s OK, too. Don’t forget to protect your feet, ears and the top of your head.
To do that, Arizona beauties are single-handedly bringing back the hat, so here’s your excuse to go shopping. Get a brim that covers your face. Wear it religiously. Keep an extra in the car.
We never leave the house without our water bottles knowing that especially in the desert, water sustains us. The same can be said for our skin: hydration is key year-round but especially during hot summer months.
Some facial therapies recommended by aestheticians and stylists include hydrafacials and hydrating facials (the difference is in technique). Other
options include combining facials with dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Exfoliation and a moisture-penetrating mask will restore that glow in your cheeks.
Some women (and men) experience rosacea, a skin condition causing redness and broken capillaries in the face. While it may look like rosy cheeks to some, it’s a drag for those who have it. Summer weather can bring out the worst in someone’s complexion if they’re fighting rosacea. If you’re prone to that condition, ask for a special treatment that provides immediate relief, dilating capillaries and reducing the blotchiness. Some experts use green tea, licorice and chamomile along with a cleansing ampoule. After a rose thermal mask, this treatment provides immediate and long-lasting results.
Taking care of your skin and preventing sun damage are as important as after-thefact restorative treatments. Have a heavyduty moisturizer in your daily arsenal. Lip balm with an SPF is a great idea, or lipstick that provides not only color but protection from the sun. Use a humidifier inside to keep the air and your skin moist. Gentle cleaners and exfoliants can be part of your skin care regime. Make sure to choose a cleanser that won’t strip your skin of essential oils. Resist taking hot showers, which can dry the skin, and choose a body moisturizer that nourishes you all over.

unbathing without the UV rays, moon bathing is an ancient practice most often linked to the Ayurvedic tradition that can be done in a manner similar to forest bathing or sunbathing or even taken to a literal level.
The goal is to absorb the moon’s calming, regenerative energy, which is said to offer various benefits throughout the lunar cycle.
Ancient Indian medicine teaches that pitta dosha is the fiery element that drives creation, ambition and passion but also leads to inflammation and other ills when it’s out of balance. Turning to the moon’s cooling, soothing energy is one way to counteract these problems and regain your footing.
Find a peaceful site outdoors where you can be flooded with moonlight; during inclement weather use a window-lit room. You can also use water that’s been “charged” with moonlight to bathe in.
WAXING MOON
The beginning of the lunar cycle signifies growth as the celestial orb begins to fill out, and it’s a good time for clearing things in our mind that no longer
serve us and setting intentions. It’s a time for new beginnings and second chances, so try journaling to reflect on your past experiences and set your direction for the upcoming cycle.
Be specific about what you want to make happen, but you should leave enough room for the universe to bring some pleasant surprises, too!
Conversely, the full moon represents completion and fruition of plans. It’s a time to celebrate accomplishments and evaluate what changes may need to be made when choosing and pursuing your next goal.
The energy of a full moon can be overwhelming, so it’s wise to be gentle with yourself and take a step back from any strong reactions or emotions you’re feeling. Note any issues you might be repressing or overlooking.
WANING MOON
As the cycle winds down and the moon releases its energy, it’s time to let go of what’s slowing you down, so that you can heal and regenerate. After that, you can welcome growth and development.
NDON’T LET YOUR WELL RUN DRY

orthern Arizona is not Southern Arizona, and that’s something we all tend to be grateful for in the summer. But we may need to go into the depths of the desert to take care of business from time to time, and the drought parked over our state means moisture is at a premium wherever you happen to be.
It’s a good time to review how to stay hydrated and happy throughout the warmest months of the year.
A common recommendation from experts, including those at the Arizona Department of Health Services, is for adults to consume eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day, or 64 ounces. Some organizations use different formulas to create a favored regimen, such as drinking at least half an ounce per day for each pound of weight you carry, i.e. 75 ounces of water for a 150-pound individual, or a flat recommendation of 15.5 cups for men and 11.5 cups for women per day.
These are just baseline numbers and should be supplemented in many circumstances, including hot weather. The state health services department says people working outside in the heat should drink eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes, drinking small amounts frequently rather than larger quantities after longer intervals for more effective hydration.
Replacing some of that water with sports or other electrolyte-containing drinks can be helpful in beating the dehydration blues, but drinking more than 48 ounces of water, sports or energy
drinks or other fluids in an hour could lead to water intoxication, a medical emergency that occurs when blood becomes too diluted and its sodium levels drop to dangerously low levels.
Certain individuals may need to drink more than the recommended levels to stay at optimal hydration levels, including infants, older people, those with chronic illnesses and anyone who’s pregnant or breastfeeding.
Typically, about 80% of the hydration in our diet comes from fluids and the other 20% from food, which is more difficult to measure but also contributes to maintaining the proper level of water in our bodies, which are composed of about 60% to 70% water. Moisture-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, spinach, cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers and celery are wonderfully cooling foods to have on hand anyway and will significantly boost our hydration.
We should all be vigilant about looking for signs of dehydration in ourselves and those we love. The symptoms include thirst, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth and lips, pinched skin that doesn’t snap back into place or dark yellow urine with a strong odor.
As heat-related illness starts to loom, it’s imperative to seek medical attention, especially if someone starts to act confused, is unable to drink or loses consciousness.
One of the most priceless luxuries we can have in our lives is the unconditional love and companionship we get from our pets. A new British study claims to put a monetary value on what they give to us, and it’s impressive.
The study was published in the March 2025 issue of Social Indicators Research by researchers from the London School of Economics and the University of Kent. It estimates pets add the equivalent of up to $93,000 a year in benefits by increasing their owners’ satisfaction with life, along with boosting it 3 to 4 points on a 7-point scale.
The authors say it’s important to attempt to quantify the benefits of pet ownership to help guide public policy on health care and other issues.
The authors of the study use a portion of the UK Household Longitudinal Survey, given to about 2,500 participants yearly, to measure the connection between life satisfaction and pet ownership. The survey is given to some of the same respondents in multiple years, allowing researchers to track their responses to different questions as they are asked over time.
The average effect owning pets was found to have on various aspects of well-being, including physical health, mental health, family and social relationships, were then combined with income data to create a value for the aid and comfort dogs and cats give to their owners. The figures varied slightly between dog and cat owners but were roughly equal. The study did not have enough data to evaluate the value of owning other species, such as horses, rabbits or reptiles.
The study’s findings affirm what pet owners have long known — that the bond we share with our pets is transformative. Pets provide more than just companionship; they offer emotional support, stress relief and even physical health benefits. Dogs, for instance, not only encourage daily exercise but also
act as social catalysts, facilitating connections within our communities. Meanwhile, the soft, comforting presence of a cat can transform a house into a home, offering solace on even the most challenging days. Moreover, the research found that pet ownership can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, making it particularly valuable for those living alone or navigating major life transitions. This aligns with prior studies showing that pets can act as powerful antidotes to depression and anxiety, contributing to longer, healthier lives for their owners.
In an era where wellness and personal fulfillment are increasingly prized, the case for pet ownership is stronger than ever. So, as you consider the next meaningful addition to your life, remember that the greatest luxury of all might just be waiting for you at your local animal shelter.
Technology has crept, or perhaps leapt, into every aspect of our lives including how we look. Want something changed? There’s an app for that. Thinning or loss of hair can ring alarm bells and may feel inevitable for men, but there are new options available.
Just recently it was announced on Earth. com that scientists have discovered hidden stem cells inside our hair follicles that can activate growth.
A physician from the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine, Lu Q. Le, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues have been doing research on hair loss.
Existing therapies include creams and medications that respond to a limited type of hair loss. The results may be marginal and last a short time. With stem cell therapy, the upper follicle cells are still intact whether the patient is bald or has thinning hair. With the appropriate trigger, these cells may have the capability of restarting the hair growth cycle that has been lost due to dormant cells.
Current research is being done on 3D bioprinting of hair follicles, a potential alternative to hair transplant surgery.
Nanotechnology is paving the way for non-invasive treatments, featuring microscopic particles that can deliver medication directly to the follicles.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an option with robotic systems in the future that might be able to graft and implant with precision. AI also will be useful in predicting and prescribing as it analyzes huge amounts of patient data and outcomes. Smart devices worn on the scalp will be able to offer real-time data on key indicators of the scalp like blood flow, pH levels and temperature with wearable technology helping manage hair growth.
Follicular Unit Extraction (or FUE) is a current day option for hair transplants. Frontal hairline restoration, crown area restoration and treatment for inherited high hairlines can all be accomplished. Patients experience hair growth about three to four months after the procedure with just a few days of down time. Crown Precision Implantation (CPI) is a method where the hair is extracted and implanted as individual hair follicles. This process is less invasive and may offer a more natural appearance.

Flagstaff is a four season hub of activity where an eclectic mix of small-town charm and endless outdoor adventure beckons.
It is the highest point on the entirety of Route 66. It's also the place where Pluto was discoverd and astronauts trained before first visiting the moon.
Drop your bags off at Little America, a prime location close to great restaurants, hiking, skiing and only 90 minutes away from the Grand Canyon.
long with visions of a beautiful home, filled with family and memories, some of us dream about the “perfect” kitchen.
Perfection, of course, means different things to different people. With the assistance of interior designers or Instagram or maybe even artificial intelligence, you can design the kitchen of your dreams and much of the real estate in that kitchen will be your countertops.
The many choices for countertops in a luxury kitchen can make your head spin. A lot will depend on your aesthetic: are you looking for warmth in a farmhouse kitchen? Do you love that bold minimalistic look and you’re keen on a sleek white space? Maybe you’re committed to creating a space that will draw family and friends into the kitchen with the smell of your cooking. Whatever your style, here are some options for creating that highend, luxury look in a kitchen that reflects your tastes and dreams:
• Marble. There’s a reason Michaelangelo carved in marble and his sculptures move us to this day. Whether it’s Carrera marble or Calacatta Gold from Italy, marble is often the choice of high-end designers. The stone comes in a variety of colors and patterns, and it’s primarily known for its pristine white tones. However, marble is
delicate and it can etch or stain. If you’re a hard-core home chef, marble may not be for you.
• Granite. As one of the hardest stones, granite is more durable, and it resists scratching or staining. Honed granite has a matte finish and may be more porous than polished granite, which boasts a high sheen. Colors will vary based on whether the stone is honed or polished. Granite also holds up well to the occasional hot dish placed on the counter without a trivet (horrors).
• Quartzite. This natural stone comes from the earth as a result of heat and sand, and it can look like marble with streaks and striations although it’s more durable. Resistant to scratching, quartzite is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use because it’s also resistant to ultra-violet light.
• Quartz. Not to be confused with quartzite, quartz is made by combining loose quartz with resin and polymers or plastics. Because it’s manufactured, quartz comes in a wide variety of colors and finishes, allowing for all kinds of tastes from natural stone to vibrant colors (think: red!). Quartz is a great choice but remember it’s nonporous and scratch-resistant and can be damaged by heat. Don’t forget that trivet.
Other options include wood, metal, concrete and soapstone, and each comes with advantages and drawbacks. A wooden countertop gives lush warmth to a kitchen but may need high maintenance and protection from scuffs or burns. Metal and concrete give an industrial look, and soapstone, ranging from gray to charcoal, can be buffed to a beautiful patina.

ardening is a favorite hobby that provides fresh air and exercise along with fresh, healthy food grown exactly how you want it to be. Not only that, the crops you raise can be a lovely and intriguing addition to your home landscape. All it takes is careful site selection and routine maintenance so your garden blends seamlessly and doesn’t detract from the rest of your yard.
You can disperse plants throughout your property, which is easier if you don’t have a large open space, or plant everything in one designated area, which makes it easier to monitor and protect the plants. In either case you’ll need to spend some extra time analyzing the sun and shade exposure for different parts of the yard.
It’s easy to plant homegrown food within an established landscape. Basil, rosemary and lavender are attractive plants that can work beautifully as borders throughout the yard, while vines growing beans, grapes and tomatoes on trellises can be easily done on your perimeter walls, pergolas and other structures.
Many edible plants can be an element of a scenic backyard. Purple kale and Swiss chard can be visual showstoppers, and edible flowers like pansies and nasturtiums can add a delightful accent to your landscape as well as your salads and desserts. You can even intersperse a couple of dwarf fruit trees with the other shrubs and trees in your yard.
If you’d like to have a larger plot of land to work with you can choose the slice of your property with the most favorable lighting and section it off with wooden pallet boards, short fences, retaining walls or whatever other boundary works for you. Raised garden beds are another method for creating that separation, especially when soil conditions aren’t great for growing food. A larger single land area for your garden gives you the opportunity to grow larger vegetables and those that require more space between plants, like pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes and broccoli.

asitas, also known as accessory dwelling units or ADUs, are more popular than ever. So given that one could increase your home value by up to 35%, it’s a project that anyone who has the room should be considering. If you’ve already decided you’re going to add this asset to your home, there’s just a few steps you need to take to make sure it adds the value you’re looking for, for your family as well as for future buyers.
Arizona law now allows casitas, which can be attached to a home or a separate structure, to be built on all single-family lots in cities and towns with populations over 75,000, so Flagstaff does fall under it. Homeowners’ associations (HOAs) and unincorporated areas are exempt.
Smaller Northern Arizona municipalities including Prescott, Prescott Valley and Sedona retain more control over where they can be built, so residents will need to verify whether their lots are large enough and meet other requirements under the applicable zoning code and HOA regulations. This will also determine the parameters you’ll be able to build within, so you can start to sketch the footprint of your structure and figure out what it will be able to accommodate. If one floor doesn’t appear to be enough, check the regulations to see if you can add a second story.
Whether you anticipate using your casita as a guest house, rental, living quarters for relatives or another purpose, it’s a good idea to ensure it’s adaptable for multiple uses. For example, even if you don’t plan to extend all utilities to the building you should make it convenient for a future owner to do so through its placement. Your casita’s intended use likely will determine the amenities that will be built into it. A family member living inside of it may just need a kitchenette or no kitchen at all, as they’ll be eating many meals in the larger house. But it’s likely easier to attract renters with a full kitchen. In any case, using upgraded finishes and materials will heighten the upscale atmosphere and quality of life for whoever stays there.
After you’ve completed a design that works for you and the surrounding environment, it’s time to select a contractor. Some may be tempted to attempt to DIY it, but don’t unless you have construction industry experience. Research reviews and get references from friends and neighbors for licensed firms with expertise in ADU projects similar to what you’re planning. The right company to work with will be transparent about costs and timelines, work with you in obtaining the necessary permits and strive to make sure the project meets or exceeds your expectations. Many offer design services as well.
In a well-designed bedroom, the nightstand is more than just a functional piece — it’s a quiet anchor of style and order. Choosing the right one can transform a room from cluttered to curated, all while keeping daily essentials within easy reach.
This season, luxury nightstands are blending beauty with smart design. Think Italian marble tops paired with slim brass legs, handcrafted oak with hidden drawers or sleek lacquered finishes with built-in charging stations. These are not just pieces of furniture; they’re statements of taste and practicality.
For a cozy, welcoming look, let natural materials dominate. Warm woods like walnut and ash bring a sense of calm, while soft leather inlays and velvetlined drawers add a touch of elegance. Minimalist designs with rounded edges create a softer profile, making the room feel more relaxed and lived in.
ORGANIZATION ADDS CALM
Organization is just as important as aesthetics. Many high-end nightstands now feature clever details like softclose drawers, adjustable shelving and discreet cord management. Some
even come with modular components, letting you customize storage for books, tech or personal items.
In smaller spaces, consider a floating nightstand. Wall-mounted options keep the floor clear, creating an airy, open feeling. Pair one with a sculptural table lamp or a small art piece for a stylish, edited look.
For those who prefer a bit of drama, glossy black or deep navy lacquered nightstands with gold hardware add bold sophistication. Meanwhile, textured pieces — like those wrapped in linen or faux shagreen — bring a layer of visual interest without overwhelming the room.
When styling your nightstand, less is more.
A curated stack of books, a simple ceramic dish for jewelry and a small vase of fresh flowers are often all you need. The goal is to create a space that feels intentional, not crowded.
A beautiful nightstand balances form and function, making it an essential — and transformative — part of any stylish bedroom. If you’re shopping for two nightstands it’s doubly important to make sure they don’t overwhelm the bedroom.
If hanging out by the pool year-round sounds like heaven to you, consider building an indoor pool as a haven from the world, a space for fun and play and an opportunity for year-round exercise that’s easy on the joints.
Please take note: deciding to build an indoor pool shouldn’t be a frivolous decision. Not only is there a significant financial investment but there will be months during the building process when strangers invade your backyard (or wherever you choose to build your pool), digging with large pieces of earth-moving equipment. Like all construction projects, it may (will?) take longer than estimated, so in addition to having a substantial bank balance, you’ll need to have lots of patience.
According to Homeguide.com, the average cost of an indoor pool is $25,000 to $120,000 depending on the size of the pool and the materials used. That’s just the pool. Add additional costs for a dehumidification system to prevent mold or mildew, and you’ll want to figure in any landscaping costs or additional building costs for an enclosure if you’re building out a space for the pool and your family and guests.
Whether you choose to build your pool within an existing building or you build an enclosure around the pool, costs can escalate another $4,000 to $50,000 if you go for high-end materials like glass or polycarbonates, which are virtually unbreakable plastics. There
will be some labor costs for excavation, plumbing and electrical wiring.
Make sure you understand exactly what’s covered and what’s additional when you work with an installer.
The size of the pool you build will affect the cost, so think about what kind of experience you’re looking for. Is it a Tommy Bahama sipping-margaritas-ona-floatie kind of pool? Then you might want a kidney-shaped indoor pool, great for those whose main goal is to dip and sip. If you’re looking for ease of construction, a rectangular pool is a great choice. Classic pools have some accent curves, and lagoon pools may feature a waterfall with real or faux rocks. Whatever your choice, jump right in.
Having a pool can be a joy, and maintenance shouldn’t be a drag. Hiring a pool service is an answer. Costs for a service will vary depending on where you live — check with your local chamber of commerce to research companies.
Indoor pools are easier to clean than outdoor pools — they’re free of leaves and debris throughout the year. You can do your own alchemy and maintain the pool yourself if you enjoyed high school chemistry and that’s your thing. Whatever you do, however you handle your pool maintenance, don’t be resentful that your pool needs upkeep. A pool is a big investment, and it needs to be tended.
Traditional flooring includes carpeting and hardwood floors, the tried-and-true options for the décor under our feet. Another option exists, and it’s a particularly bold choice: floor art.
Opting for floor art and floor murals can add pizzazz to your home or workspace depending on what you want to communicate. Do you have a slab of concrete you want to cover with paint in a whimsical way, perhaps in the garage or playroom? Popular themes include kid-friendly art for schools and child-care facilities, 3D
murals that jump out at the viewer with landscapes or ocean views.
Floor art may be an original mural painted on concrete or wood by a favorite artist, or it can be strips of vinyl purchased in panels online, depending on your goal and your budget.
Painted floor art stands the test of time and will be easier to keep clean. The vinyl stickers offer all kinds of options for colors and patterns. However, they often require a different type of cleaning method and may be more time-intensive to keep the floor shipshape.
Consider what the room is used for and who’s going to be using it or passing through. Do you want floor art for your office or business? Maybe you’re opting for floor art or a ready-made floor mural for your home gym. Either way, the images you project onto the floor will be a projection of you and your hospitality or brand.
Floor art is a great way to promote a business. A mural can include a company logo, and customers or clients are invited to share their photos with the floor mural as backdrop on their “socials.”
If the mural or artwork is in the family room, it’s a great place to take holiday photos to send to family and friends. The artwork is a reflection of the space you want to create, whether that’s a rocky seascape or a mural of fairies in the woods. When commissioning your own floor art, skip the online options and go straight to your local high school or community college. There are art students dying to share their talents.

o Northern Arizona home is complete without some space for outdoor living, and luxury homes, especially those built in scenic, rugged terrain, are taken to another level when equipped with a deck. These raised platforms are typically built near or adjacent to the home and afford people an expansive view of the surrounding landscape and horizon from the back or side yard. It’s no surprise that human ingenuity is continually making decks stronger, easier to maintain and cushier than ever before. Upgraded materials, improved building techniques and high-tech addons are making them more stylish and customized. These components will combine to create the ideal deck for your home.
The wood that decks are traditionally crafted from is beautiful, but should be stained and still needs regular maintenance. High-end composite decking, made of wood fibers and plastic, has the earthy, textured appearance of real wood and is resistant to mold, scratches and fading, retaining its vibrant color. If only natural wood will do, consider long-lasting, sustainable exotic choices like mahogany, teak and ipeCQ, which offer breathtaking color and sophistication that only gets better with age.
Whether you’re building new or upgrading an existing deck you’ll want to invest in the latest lighting technology for safe yet wellcontrolled illumination. LEDs may sound like old news by now but they’re still part
of the vanguard. They can be installed in strips below railings and stairs or recessed into the deck itself, staying out of view. Smart lights controllable by an app or wall panel let you calibrate them to the exact atmosphere you’re trying to create. Even a dance party!
High-end outdoor furniture is available in nearly any style, from coastal chic to tropical resort to country-style wicker. Resilient materials and fabrics keep them looking elegant season after season, and state-of-theart filling keeps sofa and chairs posh enough to make the outdoors comfier than indoors.
This can go far beyond lighting. Wireless, weather-resistant speakers can be installed in the deck or railing for a surround-sound effect; outlets and wireless charging stations can keep everyone effortlessly connected; and automated awnings and smart heaters can keep everyone fortified against the elements in a world of their own.
Now that you’ve extended your living space into nature, it’s only fair to invite nature onto your new deck. Planters can be built on the borders of the deck to grow herbs, spices and other edible plants for the kitchen or your favorite seasonal flowers. Trellises and other structures can be used to support growing vines, flowering and otherwise, and containers can hold large plants or even trees.
Better yet, see if you can build your deck around a towering pine or oak already in your yard!
