Auntie Mame

“ Life is a banquet,” said Auntie Mame, who didn’t want anyone to starve. We feel the same; no one goes hungry on our watch.

This issue we fill readers with fun, adventure and pops of the unexpected.

We recommend taking a laughter yoga class, where you’ll laugh — maybe roar — until you are delightfully energized and invigorated. We also think you should have fun working from home, so you might want to read our story on desk yoga.

For many of us, a good night’s sleep is what we crave. Did you know there is something called sleep tourism? We tell you about it.

Perhaps you just want an out-of-this world mini getaway. For about $450,000 you’ll be about to take a 90-minute journey to the edge of space; orbital flights are in the $60 million dollar range.

If fun for you is adding pizzazz to your home, consider buying a retro appliance, be it fridge, microwave, dishwasher, etc. These mid-century modern kitchen appliances can be orange, deep blue, turquoise, pink, lavender, yellow or cream, and many come with the latest technology.

It may be time to explore “Unexpected Blue Theory” for your home décor. We do.

NO JOB IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL!

LET DEFENSIBLE DESIGN IN

LANDSCAPING GUARD YOUR

Home

Building your high-value home in the mountains and plains of Northern Arizona has been your labor of love and hard work, allowing you to settle into the environment of your dreams. But that environment, breathtaking as it is, contains the seeds of its potential destruction.

The key to protecting it lies in your landscape design. Even before disaster struck

some of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Los Angeles in January, wildfire risks have been escalating throughout Northern Arizona and the rest of the country.

As insurance companies reconsider doing business in our region and our persistent drought continues, it’s time to consider reevaluating your property’s composition while maintaining its natural beauty.

ZONE 0

The whole idea of defensible space is to provide fuel breaks between vegetation masses and between vegetation and buildings.

Zone 0 in these terms is the five feet immediately surrounding a home or other structure. The goal is to remove all combustible material from this area to provide a clean fuel break and a safe space for first responders to combat any flames.

Homeowners should clear out all vegetation and debris from this area, including plants, leaves, branches and grass on the ground and any debris on the roof. Then, fill this in with nonflammable hardscape including gravel, rock, pavers, bricks, retaining walls and driveways.

This is a great place to put your patio, conversation pit and other outdoor living spaces, but be careful if you’re considering including a fire pit.

ZONE 1

This area stretches from 6 to 30 feet away from the structure and your landscape can include trees, plants and grass, but they should have room to breathe. Driveways and paved paths can extend into this intermediate zone to provide hard breaks between fuel sources, and any grass should be well-irrigated to reduce its potential to burn.

Trees and shrubs should be kept to small clusters and the recommended distance between tree crowns is 18 feet. Maintain vertical clearance of 6 feet above the ground by eliminating any “ladder fuels” that could send a

fire rushing up into the tree canopy. This allows the beauty of your home to shine through while birds and other wildlife can benefit from the habitat that’s been established.

ZONE 2

This extended zone runs 30 to 100 feet away from the house, where the recommended distance between trees is gradually relaxed to 12 feet up to 60 feet away from the house, then to 6 feet between 60 and 100 feet away. The 6-foot vertical clearance rule should be followed through this zone as well.

In this area it’s best to plant fireresistant vegetation when possible, which means choosing deciduous trees over evergreens, a tough call for many, or taking meticulous care of them to keep the risk down to a minimum.

Pearls’ Lustrous Sheen

UNDERSCORES MODERN DESIGNS

Pearls are a classic that never really goes out of style. Their luster has appeared in the royal courts of ancient China to the White House to the births of modern princess Rhianna’s sons, always maintaining their composure and dignity.

They have seen a particular resurgence over the past five years that shows no sign of abating.

One reason for this is the gem’s adaptability to modern designs, belying its past reputation of being old-fashioned. Strings of pearls traditionally worn as a single cascade are being splayed across the chest for an intriguing, dramatic look. They’re decorating sweaters and swimwear and shoes and being strung on leather cords for a semi-casual South Seas vibe.

Timeless pearl-drop earrings are back but they’re being reimagined with different shapes and sizes, too.

Another way to take pearls in a more contemporary direction is to mix them with gold, either on the same piece of jewelry or mixing pearl strands with gold. Perfectly round pearls still draw the highest dollar amounts but irregularly shaped or “baroque” pearls, from the notquite-perfectly round to the elongated or jagged, are finding new value with more adventurous designers and their clients.

Diamonds and pearls are a time-honored pairing that epitomizes luxury and can be combined into compelling modern designs.

HOW TO STYLE

Pearls go with just about everything and some forms, including stud earrings and simple, well-maintained strings and even rings, can be worn just about anywhere.

These can be worn with dresses, collared shirts and jeans, blouses and skirts, even nicely maintained T-shirts with shorts and running shoes.

It’s best to save longer and bolder strands, showier earrings and statement pieces for more formal gatherings, where they can be appreciated in their showstopping glory against a stunning dress or perfectly tailored ensemble.

Men have many more options now than in years past to add the power of pearls to their wardrobe — a fashion-forward string of pearls around the neck works with crewnecks, dress shirts, turtlenecks and dressy T-shirts. Pearl cufflinks are a classic touch with a twist, and pearl accents on rings and watches can add a sleek, masculine flourish that won’t soon be forgotten.

PEARLS (ALMOST) BEYOND PRICE

These mysterious gems of the sea are broadly associated with wealth and luxury, but the widespread production of cultured pearls through human intervention has made them, as a whole, much more affordable than in days of yore.

But some pearls are much rarer, more valuable and higher quality than others. Nearly all pearls produced today are cultured but saltwater pearls are less common than their freshwater counterparts, are rounder and have a shinier, almost mirrorlike finish.

Akoya pearls from Japan are especially treasured, and South Sea varieties from Australia, Polynesia, the Philippines and Japan are considered the “Rolls Royce of pearls.”

ORGANIC BURIALS:

GOING BACK TO THE EARTH IN STYLE

The “crunchy granola” set has gone mainstream. If you’re food conscious and want to buy organic, you don’t have to go to a specialty store anymore. Fast fashion has been scorned in favor of upcycling, recycling and keeping dyes and chemicals out of the waterways. So it isn’t that crazy to think about organic burials, an environment-friendly approach to burial that bypasses the effects of traditional burial methods.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE WITH AN ORGANIC BURIAL?

If you’re measuring your own carbon footprint, you can add 250 pounds of carbon to the environment if you opt for a casket-and-a-plot burial. That’s

the equivalent of driving around for three months. Alternatively, an organic or “green” burial only generates 25 pounds of carbon emissions. Enter the Green Burial Council, an organization founded in 2005 as a way to develop and maintain standards with green burials, provide education and advocate for those who want an environmentally friendly burial. According to the council, there were 470 organic cemeteries in the United States and Canada as of 2024. The council has developed certification programs for those wishing to reach a growing number of people who want their death to support, not harm, the earth.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

An organic burial involves letting the body decompose naturally without chemicals. Bodies are placed in biodegradable containers, whether that’s a shroud, a casket or an urn made from natural materials. The land may be part of a preserve with native plants or conservation burial grounds protected and restored.

THE FALLOUT OF TRADITIONAL BURIAL

The leaching of metal into the earth isn’t the only issue with the traditional burial system. Workers who embalm bodies show increased health risks from the toxic fluids used. Grave workers are exposed to toxins leached into the soil. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, more than half the people queried in a 2017 survey expressed an intent for eco-friendly burial options. There are some drawbacks. A green burial doesn’t usually allow gravestones or markers. Although organic burial is legal in all 50 states, regulations vary state by state on where the burials can take place, and there aren’t as many green burial sites as traditional ones.

Luxury Goods

NMEET MANY PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS

ot every person with a high net worth spends a lot of money on luxury goods, but expensive and exclusive cars, clothing, jewelry, handbags, furniture, décor, selfcare products, appliances, electronics and many more products attract hordes of high-income users who can afford them, along with quite a few others who can’t.

It turns out there are quite a few psychological factors involved in drawing us to higher-priced products with a higher cost than similar ones that could perform many if not all the same functions. In many cases buying them can lead to a happier, easier existence.

PRESTIGE

Humans have a need to establish status and differentiation from others in the social hierarchy, and may seek these indicators of status through buying purses, jeans, shirts or other accoutrements with the logo of a luxury fashion house or drive a Ferrari that will instantly get them noticed on the road or in a parking lot.

Many a consumer will use these as symbols of prosperity and success in society, though depending on others’ perceptions it may not always have the desired effect.

QUALITY

Most luxury brand names are attached to an expectation of quality, to the point where people who have no firsthand experience with the products expect them to be excellent and durable. Rolex, Chanel, Hermes, Prada, Dior and Balenciaga are among the companies whose good reputation precedes them with many buyers. Consumers are drawn to labels they believe will deliver exceptional value with their astronomical price tag.

ASPIRATION

Buying yourself a designer suit, diamond necklace or leather laptop bag when these are just a little bit out of your price range isn’t always irrational — sometimes it’s setting yourself up for future growth by creating the image you want to have in the future. It’s like “dressing for the job you want,” rather than the one you have. Doing this can enhance your self-image along with the image others have of you.

RARITY

Humans are wired to pursue and possess rare objects; the well-known scarcity principle decrees people will automatically view objects that are rare as being more valuable. Once there’s a demand for that rare object, the perceived value goes up exponentially. This leads to competition for the few items that exist due to what’s lately been coined FOMO or the “fear of missing out.” Luxury retailers are skilled at exploiting this psychological tendency by producing small batches and “limited editions.”

PLEASURE

Purchasing luxury goods gives us a shot in the arm. Putting your card down to buy a spicy customized perfume, a sumptuous cashmere sweater, a limited-edition bottle of superb wine or any other such extravagance triggers the reward centers of your brain.

Dopamine floods your mind as you admire your possession and its sensual qualities reinforce a positive feedback loop.

HIGHLIGHT YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS WITH

Backlit SHELVING

Awell-curated bookshelf is more than just storage — it’s a statement. Whether showcasing rare first editions, art books or personal favorites, backlit shelving elevates the display, creating a warm, inviting ambiance. Accent lighting not only highlights your books but also transforms your space into a sophisticated retreat.

WHY BACKLIT SHELVING?

Backlit shelving adds depth, dimension and drama. Unlike traditional overhead or task lighting, it subtly illuminates each shelf, casting a soft glow that enhances the textures and colors of your books. This technique is often used in high-end interiors to create a museum-like effect, drawing the eye to prized collections while providing functional visibility.

ACCENT LIGHTING FOR BOOKSHELVES

The right lighting choice depends on your aesthetic preference and bookshelf design. Here are some elegant options:

• LED strip lighting — Flexible and easy to install, LED strips provide even illumination across shelves. Available in warm, cool and color-changing tones, they can be adjusted to suit different moods.

• Recessed puck lights —

These small, circular fixtures create focused pools of light, ideal for highlighting specific books or decorative objects.

• Integrated shelf lighting

— For a seamless look, opt for built-in lighting within the shelving structure. This approach works well with custom cabinetry, giving a modern finish.

• Picture lights or spotlights

— If you prefer a classic, gallery-style look, adjustable spotlights can highlight selected books and artifacts.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LIGHT TEMPERATURE

Light temperature dramatically impacts the mood of a space.

A warm white creates a cozy, intimate feel, perfect for a library or reading nook. A cooler white (4000K) lends a more modern, gallery-like ambiance, ideal for contemporary spaces. Dimmable lighting allows flexibility, letting you shift the mood as needed.

INSTALLATION AND SMART LIGHTING

For a high-end touch, consider smart lighting systems. Appcontrolled LEDs let you change colors, brightness and schedules

effortlessly. Wireless solutions eliminate the need for extensive wiring, making them ideal for retrofitting existing bookshelves.

FINAL TOUCH:

LAYERING LIGHT

Combine backlighting with ambient and task lighting to achieve a balanced look. A floor lamp or chandelier can complement the bookshelf’s glow, adding depth to the overall design.

TRIPS Out-of-this-World

IARE POSSIBLE FOR THE PRICE

f traveling to the stars sounds more romantic than real, think again. What was once the province of science fiction novels is now available and accessible — to travel in space.

Advances in technology and the vision of some enterprising entrepreneurs have created opportunities for those longing to go into space and those with the bank accounts to support it.

The business is known as the space tourism industry. While other sectors of business may be lagging, the space tourism sector is poised for significant financial growth. Some market value projections say space tourism is expected to be a $5.1 billion industry by 2035. And while a trip to Mars may not seem accessible to the average Joe or Jane, space travel is happening today for people who don’t have to become astronauts to get into the game.

WHAT’S PROPELLING THE GROWTH?

Demand is driven by people who have the power of imagination and maybe watched too many episodes of Star Trek, or read too many novels by Isaac Asimov, the great science fiction author. Those people also must have a hefty income (or trust fund) to afford to travel into space. But the demand is there.

Advances in spaceflight technology are making space travel safer and more affordable, which is driving market growth. What was once the domain of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a government agency, is also the domain of the private sector.

Government space agencies and private space firms have driven the cost of space travel down dramatically. Lunar missions are being pursued actively by high-net-worth individuals, risk-taking tourists and scientists. SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic are leading the charge, with commercial spaceflights being offered and more and more customers pre-booking future trips.

There’s a demand for both suborbital (brief trips to the edge of space) and orbital (reaching space and orbiting Earth) flights from the public, albeit a very select group within the public. You can expect to pay around $450,000 to Virgin Galactic for a 90-minute journey to the edge of space. Orbital flights on SpaceX are estimated to be $60 million.

BIG VISION, BIG CHALLENGES

The cost of a ticket isn’t the only consideration for the future of space tourism. Safety and reliability need to be assured for the industry to have any long-term success.

There’s a question of its impact on the environment; space tourism’s leaders need to address sustainability issues that align with preservation of the earth. Regulatory bodies need to ensure safety and responsible development if the possibilities of space tourism are going to expand.

Before you book your ticket to the moon, make sure you’ve done your market research. The space tourism industry is expanding rapidly — just know what your most current options are.

Reduce Stress

WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR DESK

You’re sitting at your computer, cranking out that last report when suddenly, “Ping!” There’s that little twinge in your back you get when you’ve been sitting too long at your desk. Time to take a break and do a little desk yoga.

TAKE A STAND

Here are some standing poses you can do, right at your desk:

• Desk upward dog: Lean forward and place your hands on the desk. Now, lift your hips up. Feel that gentle stretch at the back of your legs. Take five to six deep breaths between poses.

• Mountain pose: Stand by your desk, feet apart aligned with your hips. Ground your body and imagine you are “one with the earth.” Let your feet connect with the floor and take those five or six deep breaths.

• Standing side stretch: Reach one arm over your head and bend to the opposite side, stretching your back and your waist. Be gentle — ease into the stretch. After five or six repetitions, switch sides. Be cautious about being too rigorous.

HAVE A SEAT

You don’t even have to leave your chair to do some of these poses:

• The forward fold: While seated, put your legs straight out. Bend forward and reach toward your toes. Be gentle and don’t strain. This stretch is great for your hamstrings and lower back. Repeat five or six times with deep breaths in between.

• A seated twist: With your feet flat on the floor, twist your torso to one side and reach overhead. Give it a good stretch and hold for five or six seconds. Breathe in and out slowly. Now, switch sides and repeat.

• Try the pigeon pose: Cross your legs, first left over right, and bend over to get a nice deep stretch in the hips and glutes. Now, right over left. This pose feels so good and will give you a nice release.

JUST FOR VARIETY

To add some variety, here are some poses that will leave you feeling refreshed:

• Practice some wrist stretches. Extend your arms out in front of you, then bend your wrists up and down, like a flipper. Now move them side to side.

• Shoulder rolls are so simple, yet so effective for relieving tension. Lift your shoulders up toward your ears, then roll them, first forward then backward. Loosen those muscles in your upper neck and feel the release.

• The cat-cow pose begins by sitting at the edge of your chair, then arch your back like a cat. Hold it for a moment or two. Now, round it like a cow. Alternate between the two, being careful not to overextend.

AI can Assist, but

HUMANS STILL RULE

HIN HIGH-END RESTAURANTS

eadlines scream about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on everything from airline travel to call centers. But how about the experience of luxury dining? Will AI have an impact on how we dine and where?

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

In the kitchen, AI has partnered with the chefs at even Michelin-rated restaurants. New smart ovens and other monitors ensure a delicate dish comes out just right, every time. The purchase of ingredients for seasonal cuisine can be optimized by portion size and options for sourcing inventory. AI can even help with recipe development, analyzing certain flavor pairings and helping chefs venture into unknown fields of tasteful delicacies.

From the kitchen to the “front of the house,” including the reception area to the tables and bar, AI is mostly an unseen partner in providing superior service to the restaurant’s patrons. Like any good database, AI provides information but only a human can act on it, using AI to remember a patron’s favorite dish, their usual drink or traditional bottle of pinot noir.

HIGH TECH, HIGH TOUCH

Known for high turnover and narrow margins, the restaurant industry is paradoxically both high tech and high touch, and AI can help with both. Collecting data on customers and their likes and dislikes, AI can create deeply personalized menus, noting any dietary restrictions a guest may have and data

on past orders and preferences.

Next time you’re at a top tier restaurant, looking for your sommelier, you may receive your recommended wine pairings from AI based on your tastes and the dishes you’ve ordered. Some Michelinstarred restaurants have begun to use facial recognition to recognize their VIPs in order to give them seamless VIP service.

ON THE BUSINESS SIDE

Most of AI’s impact on your favorite highend restaurant will be behind the scenes, or as they say in the business, “the back of the house.” AI will be able to predict peak dining times, shorten waitlists and help with seating arrangements. Inventory management will get a boost with smart systems to track ingredients, ordering supplies when they run low. And because restaurants are staff-intensive, training systems can be delivered through virtual reality (VR) and other types of AI simulations.

The high touch quotient of being a restaurateur can’t be underestimated, and most chefs would rush to say that AI is only a component to enhance productivity while elevating a restaurant’s ability to personalize the experience.

Isn’t that what luxury dining should be — an experience? No amount of AI in the world can substitute for the warm greeting of the host or hostess, a special tableside visit from the chef or your usual drink coming from the bar. Creativity, craftsmanship and hospitality are at the heart of luxury dining and for now, that’s coming from the staff.

PUTS YOU IN

High-Net-Worth Company Antique Collecting

Once they’ve built up a nest egg and then some, many people with an appreciation for the aesthetic and old-world craftsmanship of antique furnishings, which typically are defined as being at least 100 years old, turn to

collecting them as a hobby. Either as investments or highend décor for your home, some of these seemingly priceless objects can command nearly astronomical value, depending on their age, materials and condition.

Not all reach that level of valuation, and Northern Arizona is a prime antiquing location for more affordable treasures, with downtown Prescott, Old Route 66 in Flagstaff and outlets throughout the Verde Valley featuring relics from the early 20th century and before. Many with an emphasis on the ranches and cowboys of the Old West, drawing shoppers from throughout the state.

Most also will have plenty of vintage items, 80 to 100 years old, which you may want to look past or rummage through on the way to the antiques. You’re not likely to find items worth hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, but there will be plenty of solid picks that will add beauty and gravitas to your home.

Some of the top stores to shop for antiques in our area include:

• Prescott Antiques — 915 E. Gurley St., Prescott; 928.800.9776

• Old Highway Trading Post — 698 E. Route 66, Flagstaff; 928.774.0035

• Sweet Pea Trading — 437 W. AZ-260, Camp Verde; 928.567.6555

Don’t forget estate sales and even garage sales as potential opportunities to find spectacular antiques where people don’t even realize what they’re giving up. In those cases it would be nice to throw in a little extra to compensate the poor seller.

Of course you can expand your search to the Valley and its antiquing hubs in Old Town Scottsdale and historic downtown Glendale; the largest antique malls to be found are the Brass Armadillos in Phoenix and Goodyear.

THE BIG TIME

The antiques market is in a transitional period, but many furnishings are still drawing top dollar at internationally renowned auction houses including Christie’s (www.christies.com), Sotheby’s (www.sothebys.com) and M.S. Rau (www.rauantiques.com), where you can follow bidding wars over a “very rare” Chinese Huanghuali corner-leg table from the 17th century or an ornate sideboard table from the French Renaissance valued at almost $1 million. You can join in the bidding yourself if you’re inclined.

These particular pieces don’t match the records set by the Pinner Qing dynasty vase auctioned for $80.2 million in 2010 or the Badminton Cabinet (or Chest), an elaborate 18th century ebony chest with inlaid jewels that set the record for most expensive piece of furniture twice, most recently for $36.7 million.

Antique furniture has so many price points it’s a viable collection hobby for the upper middle class to the “1 percenters!”

The Boys & Girls Clubs has achieved remarkable growth over the past few years. From remodeled spaces to a revamped curriculum, the Clubs now offer exciting new programs.

FROM PEARLS TO SCRUNCHIES,

Old is New

pring is a wonderful time to revive and refresh your wardrobe with new trends in accessories. Fashion designers clearly are having fun bringing back some classic pieces and some favorites from the 1980s and 1990s.

Pearls are having a moment! Your grandmother’s pearls can be worn on their own or styled with other jewelry. They can be mixed with thick gold chains for a completely different look. The overall theme of this season is personal style. The more creative the better.

Charm bracelets are showing up everywhere. Besides charms on jackets, purses and shoes — having a bracelet with handpicked charms is very fashionable. Look for jewelry brands that let you customize your bracelet with things you love.

When it comes to gold earrings, bigger is better. The teardrop shape is very popular, but large hoops also are on trend. Wearing an oversized earring adds instant glamor to whatever you are wearing.

Headbands, claw-clips and scrunchies — these nostalgic accessories have been given a modern makeover and upgrade. Look for both modern and retro prints on the headbands

and scrunchies. Claw-clips are more embellished than ever with rhinestones and gems.

Western hats are showing up in more places than rodeos. Because of the increased popularity of country music, the classic cowboy style has become more mainstream. Look for hats in vibrant colors and that have unique embellishments. This look is designed to stand out and make a statement so be bold with your choices!

Statement belts are seen with both skirts and pants this

season. One very popular look is the gold chain belt. This belt is especially versatile and can be used to dress up a casual style. Boho is alive and well. Bellbottom or flair jeans paired with a platform heel is a great way to greet spring 2025. Add an embroidered belt and peasant blouse and you are good to go. Accessories are a fun and easy way to update your wardrobe. Both local boutiques and department stores are stocked and ready for the new season.

Bringing it Home:

HOW TO HOST A

WHISKEY Flight Party

Maybe it’s our need for nostalgia, but good old-fashioned cocktails have come back with a vengeance. It’s fun to be out with friends, trying new things, so how about bringing the fun in-house to host your own Whiskey Flight Party?

THE JOB DESCRIPTION

You don’t have to be a whiskey connoisseur to host a flight party. According to Chris Blatner, executive bourbon steward and creator of @urbanbourbonist on Instagram, quoted in an interview with Foodie, what you need first is a theme. He recommends serving whiskeys similar in age and style. Then, he recommends your guests try them from lowest to highest alcohol proof.

THE ACCOUTREMENTS

Part of the fun of this party is the trappings of whiskey tasting — those little glasses held on a tray, all in a row. There isn’t any shortage of options on the internet for getting whiskey glass flight kits. The recommended number of glasses is between three and five, although experts advise you to go slow when starting out. Otherwise, you can get “palate fatigue,” when your taste buds get overwhelmed

and you stop tasting the nuances you’re looking to distinguish. Then there’s the whiskey. Where do you start? Choose a region, the experts advise. Or group your choices by similar or disparate years, like a flight of 10-to-12year-old samples. Do you prefer smoky? Sweet? Whiskeys vary widely in flavor. Are you going with Irish whiskey? Or do you have a penchant for bourbon, scotch or rye? Japanese whiskey has its own special blends.

HAVE SOME SNACKS AVAILABLE

Whiskey aficionados aren’t just in

it for the drink. The party needs to have plenty of snacks to absorb the alcohol and give people a chance to cleanse their palates. Like any good party, have plenty of cheese, nuts, chocolate and perhaps a charcuterie board to balance sweet and salty snacks. Learning and discerning aspects of taste will involve your eyes, looking for color and clarity; your nose as you sniff the aromas (is that spice? wood? fruit?); your tastebuds as you swirl the liquid around in your mouth and experience its aftertaste. While the goal isn’t to become a connoisseur, it is fun to try new things.

Pop of Blue CAPTURING THE UNEXPECTED

As with so many fabulous trends, the “Unexpected Blue Theory” moved from décor and interior design into the wonderful world of fashion. Historically, the trend was preceded by the “Unexpected Red Theory.”

and it’s as blue as lapis lazuli in a ring — no, bluer. That scarf wins the day and all you had to do was drape it on your shoulders and leave the house.

Both have the distinction of stirring up the world of beige or white with a pop of color. This year, it’s blue.

Interior designers set the trend by creating calm, neutral spaces with one bold accent in blue. The contrast is designed to be a surprise, and the blue is designed to startle. “Shock” may be too strong a word, but this blue has a mind of its own.

And not just any blue. Think cobalt blue, the kind of glassware you see in antique shops, like the blue of a Vaseline jar. Think Maxfield Parrish blue, the bold color of the sky as the sun is setting. Think of Elvis’ blue suede shoes. The Unexpected Blue Theory is filled with a little jolt to the system, your eye drawn to that pop of color that was, for the most part, unexpected.

HOW DOES UNEXPECTED BLUE SHOW UP?

There’s a certain Jedi mindset to bringing Unexpected Blue into your wardrobe and out into the world, your own personal runway. Just when people are expecting the drone of a neutral color, your scarf takes their breath away. You picked it up at a yard sale

Maybe your Unexpected Blue is, like Elvis, your shoes. Whether they’re kitten heels, flats or towering stilettos, the courage it takes to put on electric blue shoes sets you apart from the crowd. Could be boots, complementing an all-white winter coat. Maybe they’re Birkenstocks, but blue blue blue. It’s even better if they’re suede.

And what better place to show off your singing of the Unexpected Blues than with a handbag! We should all be so lucky as to sport a deep seablue Hermès, and maybe you do… pair it with wheat-colored jeans and a camelhair coat, looking very Lauren Bacall. You can also get that blue accent with a boho tote bag, a sparkly blue clutch or a crossbody bag that holds all that you hold dear (your phone and a lipstick). That’s the color that will get you to the front of the Starbucks line.

THE GOAL OF THE GAME

The goal of playing the Unexpected Blue Game is to do just that — something unexpected. Pair an electric blue shawl with your black pantsuit for the theater. Let the gap between your shoes and your hem beam with cobalt blue socks, so blue that people can’t take their eyes off you or your socks.

CELEBRATE

YOUR NAIL STYLE WITHOUT GOING

Despite what you see on the red carpet, long, sharp nails painted a multitude of colors may not work for everyone living their everyday lives. The length of our nails may be dependent on the roles we play: parents, caretakers, writers who need to be able to type… the list goes on. Ah, but color! There’s something almost delicious about the trays and trays of colors at the salon, or when you’re buying your own, shelves and shelves of color options. Your choice. Are you going with fire engine red, a vestige of old Hollywood? Or do you prefer a kind of princess pink, nude and understated? Whatever your choice, however you show

Overboard

up, your manicure is just one more fashion accessory that can reflect your substance and style. How to match your mani to your outfit without overdoing it? Consider these few tips from a variety of fashion experts:

• Look for nail polish colors that are “harmonious colors.” Harmony happens when these colors are from the same family. Intensity may be different — for instance, a soft pink dress with a bold pink mani — but they belong in the same wheelhouse.

• Don’t be afraid to experiment. Are you a same-color-every-

time type? Try breaking out and choosing a color that complements your outfit but may not have been a color you’d normally choose. Try it on for size — it’s easy to remove.

• Consider the French manicure . Clean and simple, this style appeals to us for a variety of reasons: it’s classic, and it goes with everything. A French manicure is the Grace Kelly of manis. The length of your nails doesn’t seem to matter, either — it’s a color choice that looks good on anyone.

• Go all Hollywood on us. Red looks good, always, with everything. But don’t be surprised if people treat you just a bit differently, maybe like Bette Davis (or Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift). Wearing red nail polish takes some chutzpah — that’s “self-confidence and/or audacity” in Yiddish. Red is such a classic that your outfit may be an afterthought.

Whatever your choice of color, you don’t have to go all “matchymatchy” with your polish and your clothes. Just be you and enjoy!

STYLE YOUR TEE THESE

10

Perfect Ways

Among the most versatile and practical item in your wardrobe is that Perfect White Tee. Let’s assume you’ve already found it. Usually, it’s cotton, snug but not too snug, and it’s as versatile as any article of clothing there is. Here are 10 ways to style your own Perfect White Tee:

1. Show off your bold pants. Skip the necklace and busy accessories and let your pants do the work whether they are black leather or a bold Day of the Dead sugar skull print. A white tee gives the eye some rest and diverts the attention to the pants where it belongs.

2. Enjoy that Saturday Farmers Market look with your white tee and overalls. Whether you’re wearing them for comfort or fashion, overalls have a kind of edge that only a white tee can complement.

3. Under a blazer. Even if your tee is a humble cotton number, using it as your base under a blazer can give you authority. You can jazz it up with a scarf or loads of pearls à la Coco Chanel, and white is background for whatever canvas you want to paint.

4. Tie it in a knot. Surprisingly easy to do, a knot at the front or the side gives you a silhouette you can’t accomplish with just a belt. Knotted tees lend themselves to fun and informal times…it’s a little flirty and just a touch 1950s. It’s also great for yoga classes and the gym.

5. Tuck that tee into a high-waisted skirt or trousers. The clean lines of your white tee are a great balance for your skirt or pants. Depending on the cut, your classic tee can give you that Katherine Hepburn look if your trousers are baggy or maybe that Sandy in “Grease” look if your pants are pedal pushers.

6. Add a new look (and modesty) to a slip dress. Sometimes a slip dress alone looks too much like, well, a slip. A white tee underneath gives it a different and more casual look.

7. Midriff your tee with a midi-skirt. You can start with a crop top tee or tuck yours in with a French tuck (tucked in front, hanging out in back), giving perfect symmetry to a midi-skirt.

8. Dress up a jumpsuit. Maybe the neckline plunges a bit too low — or maybe the seasons have changed. Either way, wearing your tee under a jumpsuit gives it longer life and wearability.

9. Maxi-skirts go great with white tees. Shoes can dress up the look (think: heels) or give you a more bohemian look with sandals or flats.

10. Under a sweater and accessorized. Again, make sure the tee is snug but feel free to add layers — scarves, necklaces, bolo ties — to give your sweater look some pizzazz.

TOASTS ITS

WFirst Anniversary

inebelly Vineyard Tours is putting Prescott on the map for wine enthusiasts with its full-day wine tour experience. Founded by Rebekah McClure and her husband Ross in December 2023, Winebelly takes guests on a journey through the breathtaking vineyards of the Verde Valley, offering a safe, fun and immersive way to enjoy Arizona's blossoming wine country.

Winebelly begins its tours from Prescott’s iconic Whiskey Row, where guests board a specially designed tour bus outfitted for comfort and safety. The tour stops at three vineyards, where guests can savor a variety of wines, immerse themselves in the vineyard culture and enjoy the scenic beauty of Northern Arizona — all without worrying about driving.

“At Winebelly, we’re more than just a wine tour. We’re here to make memories, celebrate Northern Arizona’s incredible wine scene and support our local community,” says Rebekah McClure, tour guide and co-owner.

The McClures’ story began in Austin, Texas, where they sold their home and embarked on an RV adventure across the U.S. in 2020. After discovering Prescott’s charm and strong sense of community, they decided to plant roots in Yavapai County. What started as a dream of entrepreneurship has evolved into a thriving business that not only showcases Arizona’s vineyards but also strengthens connections between local businesses.

“We fell in love with Prescott. It’s like living in a Hallmark movie

— beautiful, active and full of small business spirit. When we realized the need for a safe and guided way to enjoy the area’s incredible vineyards, Winebelly was born,” Rebekah says.

Winebelly doesn’t stop at offering wine tours; it actively supports local businesses. Guests begin their journey at Back Alley Wine Bar in Prescott and visit vineyards like Alcantara, DA Ranch, Javelina Leap, Oak Creek and Page Springs. Plans are in the works to expand tours to include breweries in Clarksville, Cottonwood and Flagstaff.

The McClures have built a network that benefits not just wine lovers. As Rebekah puts it, “Our little bus is more than transportation — it’s a way to bring people together and support the incredible local businesses in our area.”

Winebelly Vineyard Tours has big plans. From creating more local jobs to expanding into brewery tours, the McClures are dedicated to growing their business in a way that uplifts the entire community.

“Our mantra is simple: Discover, sip, repeat. We want to help locals and visitors alike experience the beauty and flavors of Northern Arizona — safely and memorably,” Rebekah says.

Winebelly Vineyard Tours offers group experiences for wedding groups, corporate functions or special occasions. For more information or to book a tour, visit www.winebellytours. com or call 928.923.1009.

CONSIDER THESE FACIALS FOR A Breath of Fresh Air

No matter where you spent your winter it’s great to see signs of spring. Along with the urge to open the windows and let in the breeze, you may be thinking of indulging in a spring beauty routine to bring that rosy glow back to your cheeks.

FIRST THE BASICS

Just like with spring cleaning, we’ll start with the basics. Are you cleansing your skin with a product that aligns with your skin type, whether you have dry, normal or oily skin? Cleansing daily and especially getting makeup off at the end of the day is the first step in making sure your investment in your skin is protected. Speaking of protection, are you wearing your SPF every day? Every. Day. Whether it’s in your moisturizer, in your makeup or both, sunscreen is the No.1 line of defense for a host of skin problems, from premature wrinkles to skin cancer. Dermatologists the world over say this is the one thing they would advise their patients to do: wear sunscreen. So, you’ve pampered your skin with good daily care, you’re wearing your sunscreen (even throughout the winter and on gray rainy days) and now you want to zhuzh up your spring look. It’s time to get help from the professionals.

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED

Your local dermatologist or day spa has you covered. For spring-inspired facials, think of these treatments as options, depending on your time and budget. Although there are over-the-counter alternatives for some of these treatments, we believe in leaving this kind of fine-tuning to the professionals.

• Microdermabrasion. This process exfoliates, leaving a smooth, bright complexion and removing excess dry skin. Microdermabrasion is minimally invasive and performed in the doctor’s office. The procedure takes about 20 minutes.

• Hydrafacial. You guessed it — this is water therapy for your

face, gently removing impurities so your skin takes on moisture. The benefits of this therapy last from four to six weeks, and it’s typically recommended for those who want a quick rejuvenation.

• Dermaplaning. Using a tool to exfoliate, dermaplaning leaves skin fresh and bright. This definitely needs to be done by a licensed professional and may leave skin sensitive to the sun.

• Microneedling. Tiny needles create punctures that stimulate collagen production, improving texture and tone. The skin responds by going into a healing mode, producing more collagen and elastin.

• Chemical peels. Uneven skin tone and texture, fine lines and hyperpigmentation can be addressed with chemical peels — just make sure you take time to heal. The type and depth of a peel will depend on the person’s needs and their type of skin. Multiple treatments offer the best results. There may be a longer healing process depending on the type of treatment.

With spring upon us, treat your face to a treatment to look your best.

UNLOCK THE POWER OF PRF:

THE FUTURE OF NATURAL REJUVENATION

n the ever-evolving world of aesthetics and regenerative medicine, plateletrich fibrin (PRF) and plateletrich plasma (PRP) injections are transforming the way we approach skin and hair restoration. These natural treatments harness the body’s own healing power to rejuvenate the skin, restore hair and promote overall wellness — without the need for synthetic fillers or surgery.

WHAT IS PRF/PRP?

These are derived from your own blood and contain high concentrations of growth factors, white blood cells and stem cells that stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity and encourage cellular repair. While PRP has long been recognized for its regenerative benefits, PRF is the next-generation, offering a higher concentration of platelets and a slower release of growth factors for extended healing benefits.

THE BENEFITS OF PRF/ PRP INJECTIONS

These are a natural alternative to synthetic fillers and provide longlasting, gradual improvements by stimulating collagen and elastin production. The result? Firmer, smoother and more youthful skin. Here’s why clients are turning to PRF/PRP for facial rejuvenation:

• Natural volume restoration — Ideal for areas like the under eyes and nasolabial folds, PRF injections restore lost volume and reduce fine lines.

• Long-term collagen production — Unlike traditional fillers that fade over time, PRF enhances your skin’s natural ability to regenerate.

• Skin rejuvenation, glow — PRF/PRP boosts cell turnover for a brighter, refreshed complexion.

A NATURAL SOLUTION FOR THINNING HAIR

Since PRF contains a higher concentration of growth factors than PRP, it helps to increase hair density, improve scalp health and slow down hair shedding.

• Promotes natural hair regrowth.

• Strengthens existing hair follicles.

• Reduces hair thinning, shedding.

• Safe, non-invasive and drug-free.

For best results, a series of PRF hair restoration treatments is recommended, with visible improvements seen in as little as three to six months.

MICRONEEDLING WITH PRF

Microneedling already has gained a reputation as a powerful skin renewal treatment, but when combined with PRF, the results are even more impressive. This dynamic duo enhances the skin’s ability to heal, repair and rejuvenate at a deeper level.

• Reduces fine lines, wrinkles.

• Improves acne scars, pigmentation.

• Boosts skin firmness, elasticity.

• Minimizes pores, enhances skin texture.

ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATH TECHNIQUE

Quickly Relives

Breathing techniques borrowed from yoga and other meditative traditions have grown increasingly popular throughout the 21st century as the level of stress has exploded with our sped-up, always-on society.

Deep breathing, visualization breathing, box breathing and other concepts have been used to calm nerves and steady emotions, and alternate nostril breathing is another form of pranayama, or breath control.

The benefits of alternate nostril breathing begin with stress and anxiety relief.

Some research has found this activity stimulates the vagus nerve, which controls involuntary actions like breathing, heart rate and digestion. This causes the parasympathetic nervous system to kick in, slowing your heart rate and breathing and promoting relaxation. This helps you control your reaction to anxiety-inducing situations, while also promoting heart health.

The technique may also improve memory, focus and energy, as well as your respiratory endurance and cardiorespiratory function or how the heart and lungs interact to distribute oxygen throughout your body.

HOW TO DO IT:

• Sit in a comfortable position with your spine tall.

Stress

• Use your right thumb to close your right nostril and inhale slowly through your left nostril.

• At the top of your inhale, use your right ring finger to close your left nostril and exhale through your right nostril.

• Inhale through your right nostril, then close it with your right thumb and exhale through your left nostril.

• Continue this pattern, alternating nostrils with each inhale and exhale, for several cycles. Start by aiming for 2 to 3 minutes. As you continue practicing you can increase that to 5 minutes or longer.

Alternate nostril breathing has two variations in yoga: anulom vilom, which is done as outlined above, and nadi shodhana, which includes a brief pause when the practitioner holds their breath for 2 to 3 seconds before exhaling through the second nostril. This routine is generally considered safe, but anyone whose lungs or nose is congested or has chronic lung disease should consult their health care provider before trying alternate nostril breathing. Stop immediately if you begin experiencing dizziness, lightheadedness or any other adverse symptoms.

Luxurious Feel Indulge in the OF

IMMACULATE SHEETS, TOWELS

Nothing speaks to understated luxury like crisp, fresh sheets and plush, fragrant towels.

SHEETS:

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH?

Your bed is a sanctuary, but it also collects sweat, body oils, dead skin and bacteria. Even if your sheets look clean, they likely aren’t. Experts recommend washing sheets at least once a week. If you sweat heavily, have allergies or sleep with pets, twice a week is ideal. Luxury sheets — whether Egyptian cotton, silk or linen — require special care. Use a gentle detergent, wash on a delicate cycle with cold or warm water and avoid high heat in the dryer. Line drying or tumble drying on low preserves fabric quality. Pillowcases, which absorb facial oils, should be washed even more frequently — every three to four days — especially if you have sensitive skin.

TOWELS:

THE RIGHT WASHING FREQUENCY

Towels are a breeding ground for bacteria if not washed regularly. The general rule for bath towels is to launder them every three to four uses.

That means if you shower daily, your towel should be washed twice a week. Hand towels, which are used more frequently and shared among household members, should be washed every two days. Washcloths should be laundered after every use because they retain moisture and can harbor bacteria.

When washing towels, use warm or hot water to kill germs, and avoid fabric softeners, which reduce absorbency over time. For an extra-fresh feel, add a bit of white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Guest rooms: If rarely used, wash sheets and towels before and after guests stay. Sick household members: Wash sheets, pillowcases and towels every day until recovery. Luxury fabrics: Follow specific care instructions, often requiring hand washing or professional laundering.

TREASURE TEA AND GUESTS THE

JAPANESE WAY

We’ve seen the ceremony on television shows or in movies: a beautiful Japanese geisha prepares and pours tea for the guests, usually inside a tearoom with cherry blossoms peeking around the corners of the building. The art of the Japanese tea ceremony is one laced with serious, deeply spiritual meaning. It’s a tradition you can bring into your daily routine without hopping a plane to Tokyo.

THE ELEMENTS OF THE CEREMONY

Traditionally there are four guiding principles in a tea ceremony: harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei) and tranquility (jaku). These values are woven into the ceremony from start to finish, beginning with the meticulous preparation of the tea, the teacups and any utensils used. Like any good chef who prepares his or her workplace, their mise en place, the host creates a sacred space for the ceremony that invites the guest into the ceremony with mindfulness and intention.

For you, maybe that means creating a separate tray for your tea ceremony and arranging the teapot, loose tea or teabags while serving in cups that give you a sense of harmony.

Whether those are Japanese teacups or your Royal Worchester, there is a sense of dignity and respect as you pour tea for your guests.

The setting may be your kitchen or living room, but it feels like a tearoom in the Far East.

BE HERE NOW

The traditional tea ceremony, known as Chanoyu or Cado, is designed to take your full attention. “Ichi-go ichi-e” is the awareness that each tea gathering is unique, and guests are expected to approach the ceremony with solemn humility. The spiritual practice of Zen Buddhism is woven throughout the tea ceremony, encouraging participants to be centered and meditate on inner peace. You can bring that kind of mindfulness to your own tea ceremony routine. You may be making yourself a cup of tea or sharing a pot of tea with family or friends. Take the time to connect, to really taste the tea and to be in a spirit of appreciation.

Serve your guests with love and attention. Adopt the Japanese concept of “wabi-sabi,” seeing beauty in the imperfect, a tradition of elegance and grace.

Sleep TourismMAKES DREAMS OF SLUMBER COME TRUE

Sleep has become an obsession, probably because we tend to get so little of it. It’s gotten to the point where “sleep tourism” is one of the hottest trends in wellness travel.

Resort packages are designed around activities and technology that promote deep slumber, lets us dive into our dreams or diagnose sleep-related disorders.

As consumers and health care providers continue to embrace a holistic approach to well-being, sleep is getting a renewed focus from establishments around the world, starting in Arizona:

CASTLE HOT SPRINGS, MORRISTOWN

This venerable resort northwest of Lake Pleasant sits in the northern Sonoran Desert on top of the springs that bestowed its name, on the south side of the Bradshaw Mountains. Its Soak and Slumber Package has a minimum four-night stay with a curated schedule of activities starting with a “divine sleep session” with instruction on how to align your body’s energy with ancient cycles through the day and night.

This leads into a private hike through the stunning geography surrounding the resort for stress reduction and exercise, both fundamental to good sleep. Guests are entitled to spa treatments of their choice and a sleep kit including body butter, cooling eye mask, copper bracelet and special wind-down chocolates. Rates vary seasonally, but a four-day stay for two generally runs around $8,000. www.castlehotsprings.com

CANYON RANCH, TUCSON

Another world-class wellness destination, Canyon Ranch has customizable

packages that can be geared toward any wellness goal as well as special retreats that zero in on one aspect of health or well-being. For the third year in a row you can book Mastering Sleep, a five-day retreat being held Oct. 13 to 18, led by the director of the University of Arizona’s Sleep and Health Research Program.

The program will drill deeply into the science of sleep, with seminars, activities and screenings devoted to optimizing slumber scheduled throughout. Guests will learn about sleep cycles, sleep apnea, nutrition, yoga and other practices that can assist, dreams, identifying problems and sleep technology and devices. There’s also time to explore the many other assets at the facility. Call for rates and other details. www.canyonranch.com

CHIVA-SOM HUA HIN, THAILAND

Sleep tourism is a global phenomenon, and this ultra-luxurious resort on the other side of the world caters to it as well as anyone. Guests can choose a Sleep Enhancement Specialization add-on to any retreat on Thailand’s Royal Coast, which starts out with a series of evaluations via a monitoring device detecting irregular breathing patterns, followed by hormone testing for chemicals that could be interfering with your circadian rhythm.

Once they get your results, the resort’s experts will craft recommended sleep improvement steps. A bettersleep support system can be set up in your room and a specialized fitness class geared to engineer better sleep rounds out the offerings. www.chivasom.com/en

FOREST BATHING

IN SHORT BURSTS HAS SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS

Luxury living is often associated with lavish comforts, but true indulgence may be found in the restorative embrace of nature. Enter forest micro-dosing — the practice of short yet intentional immersions in natural environments. Just 15 minutes amid trees and fresh air can deliver profound psychological and physiological benefits, especially in spectacular Northern Arizona.

THE SCIENCE OF SHORT NATURE BREAKS

Unlike traditional hiking or weekend retreats, forest microdosing embraces the idea that even brief exposure to greenery can be transformative. Studies show that spending as little as 15 minutes in a wooded area can significantly lower cortisol levels, reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity. The sensory experience — dappled sunlight, the rustling of leaves, the scent of pine — engages the nervous system, promoting relaxation and emotional balance.

A NATURAL ELIXIR FOR HEALTH

Short forest immersions improve cardiovascular function by lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Phytoncides, the aromatic compounds released by trees, have been found to boost immune response and enhance mood. For busy professionals and urban dwellers, forest microdosing provides a direct path to increased vitality without requiring extended downtime.

ELEVATING MINDFULNESS AND CREATIVITY

Stepping into nature, even briefly, fosters a deep sense of mindfulness.

Whether it’s a slow walk through a garden or pausing under a canopy of trees, these moments encourage presence and mental reset. Many creatives and executives turn to nature immersions to spark fresh ideas and improve focus, making micro-dosing a valuable tool for peak performance.

INTEGRATING NATURE

For those curating a lifestyle of intentional well-being, designing spaces that invite nature is key. Expansive windows overlooking lush greenery, garden paths or even an indoor botanical sanctuary can facilitate regular micro-dosing experiences.

Acupressure

To understand acupressure is to step into the world of Chinese medicine. Based on the principles of energy pathways, or meridians, having specific points or acupoints that can be affected by pressure to reduce pain, acupressure is something you can learn to do yourself.

EIGHT PILLARS OF WELLNESS

The goal of acupressure is to restore balance to the body’s energy, “qi” or “chi” (both pronounced “chee”). Unlike acupuncture, which uses needles, acupressure uses pressure of the hands or other objects to stimulate acupoints. There are 361 pressure points on 14 meridians. The most common treatments are for symptoms related to stomach issues, insomnia, stress, headache, muscle tension and pain.

Before embarking on your own acupressure journey, experts recommend learning from an acupuncturist. Knowing the various pressure points and the areas of the body affected is both art and science, and clinical trials on acupressure are rare.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

The most useful tools of the trade for acupressure are right there with you — your fingers. Although the technique relies on using pressure, be cautious about too much pressure and stop at any point of pain. You also may use everyday objects as tools, including:

• A pencil eraser. The eraser end of a pencil is especially useful when applying pressure to points that are difficult for you to reach.

• A tennis ball. Use a tennis ball to sustain pressure on a single

focal point, increasing circulation and helping to relieve pain.

• Dryer balls in a sock. Use dryer balls in a sock to create a tool that will allow you to massage your shoulders or your back against a wall.

Some common acupoints include the web space between your thumb and index finger, where acupressure may relieve headaches and stress and the wrist area, a point that can help with nausea and anxiety. Using your finger, gently press on the acupoint with your thumb or fingertips, applying circular pressure. Hold for 30 seconds, then release. Repeat several times, and make sure to adjust based on comfort.

DEPENDS ON WHAT AILS YOU

Besides knowing the many acupoints along the meridians, it’s important to also know when acupressure isn’t for you. Pregnant women should consult their care providers before trying acupressure, and it should not be done on the abdomen, lower back or certain areas of the leg.

Acupressure isn’t appropriate for areas of the body with open wounds, bruises or varicose veins or if there’s any swelling or indication of infection. Certain conditions including diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease, along with using medications that are anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicine, would preclude someone from using acupressure.

We’re lucky to learn about these traditional Chinese medicine techniques. Relief can be subtle, and it may not last for long, but it can make a difference. If symptoms persist, please see a qualified medical professional.

Finding your MANTRA

CAN PUT YOU ON THE RIGHT PATH

One of the simplest, yet most profound tools for enhancing daily wellness, is the personal mantra. A carefully chosen phrase, repeated with intention, has the power to shape mindset, reduce stress and align one’s life with purpose. Mantras are more than words; they are anchors for the mind. Research shows that repeating affirmations or short, meaningful phrases can lower cortisol levels, increase self-confidence and enhance focus. By engaging the subconscious mind, a personal mantra shifts thought patterns, reinforcing positive emotions and reducing mental clutter.

CRAFTING A MANTRA THAT RESONATES

A personal mantra should be concise, powerful and deeply aligned with your values. Whether it’s “I am grounded in peace” or “Success flows effortlessly to me,” the right phrase will feel empowering and natural. The key is to choose words that inspire a desired state of being — calm, confidence, resilience or abundance. Brainstorm the words you want people to use to describe you, the words you want to live up to.

THE RITUAL OF REPETITION

Repeating a mantra during morning meditation, writing it in a journal or softly reciting it during moments of stress creates a rhythm of self-affirmation. Over time these words become internalized, influencing thoughts and actions with quiet yet profound impact.

ELEVATING PERSONAL SPACES WITH WORDS

Beyond mental practice, integrating a personal mantra into one’s environment adds a layer of sophistication and mindfulness. Engraving a mantra onto jewelry, displaying it in elegant calligraphy or incorporating it into home design through artwork transforms words into a living presence — subtle reminders of personal intention.

Giggle your Way

NTO STRESS RELIEF

ot long ago I was walking through a fitness center and heard boisterous laughter coming from one of the yoga workout rooms. I couldn’t imagine what was so funny! Of course, the laughter was like music, drawing me to the door. Inside were people walking, clapping and laughing out loud. The class was, indeed, called Laughter Yoga.

YOU’VE BEEN THERE BEFORE

There’s nothing more wonderful than laughing with a friend, and sometimes that laugh can be a real workout. Your diaphragm lifts and swells. Your endorphins kick in and pretty soon, you’re holding your stomach as your laughter peels off into gasps for air. Afterward, you feel oddly peaceful, refreshed and ready for more.

That’s what laughter yoga is all about. It’s a form of exercise combined with traditional yoga poses, and it’s meant to be fun, reduce stress and leave you feeling renewed.

BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER YOGA

Besides the stress release and mood enhancement mentioned already, laughter yoga can stimulate the release of immune-supporting cells, giving the immune system a boost. Some report reduced pain as the laughter yoga distracts and reduces the intensity of pain. Overall vitality is reported as laughter yoga energizes and invigorates the body from head to toe. Like all good classes, laughter yoga usually has a structure to it, including warm-up exercises that involve gentle breathing and yoga poses to get centered. Then class participants are

given exercises that generate laughter. Sometimes, they are encouraged to fake laugh and once they begin to laugh, and hear everyone around them laughing, they can’t help but join in. A cool-down may include more breathing, yoga and meditation.

HOW IT WORKS

Different teachers bring their different gifts to laughter yoga, so there may be variations in the way a class is taught. Some teachers begin with clapping and chanting exercises, designed to generate laughter. Another exercise is called “argument laughter,” where participants pretend to scold each other, ending in laughter. “Lion’s laughter” involves holding up your hands like a lion’s paws, sticking out your tongue and giving a good belly laugh.

The real magic with laughter yoga is the sense of community created by laughing together. Yoga brings its own benefits of breath work, stretching and mindfulness. Combine that with the opportunity to be with others, relishing the joy that’s created by laughing together. We are drawn to others when we’re sharing in the spirit of the class.

IF LAUGHTER YOGA IS YOUR CUP OF TEA

If you’re hankering for this kind of workout, look no farther than the internet where you can find classes in your area, experts who offer online classes, books and certification programs. There’s no shortage of resources for anyone who wants to join in the frivolity, the fun and the connection between people who love to laugh.

FRAME

A PIECE OF YOUR LIFE FOR

SingularDécor

If you’re searching for that stunning piece of wall art that’s truly unique and you’re stumped after pacing through galleries and scrolling through top art dealers’ collections, you might want to take a look at your own souvenirs, quirky keepsakes and luxurious tchotchkes for inspiration.

Any quality custom framer will be able to take nearly any object and turn it into unbeatable wall art for your own home or as a gift for someone dear. Here’s a few ideas to get your imaginative juices flowing: Wine corks — This is an easy way for anyone who gets

misty-eyed about the splendid bubbly she had for New Year’s 2021 or that rare Pomerol merlot he spent years looking for to display their greatest conquests.

If you have a broader, growing collection, you can take the top piece of a reclaimed barrel that’s been upcycled into a frame with some depth, customize it with your family name or a significant phrase, and pop the corks from every fine bottle you drink and save them inside.

Childhood relics — This is a broad category, from bracelets to bicycles, and there’s no better way to infuse your home with nostalgia. Take a few pages from your favorite storytime book and display them in your own library or gift them to your young friend or relative. Dolls and action figures are prime suspects for this

treatment, along with board games and young artistic masterpieces.

Scarves, shawls and ties — Framing is the perfect treatment if you have a delicate scarf that belonged to your great-

picked up in Borneo that’s just too vivid not to have in your life every day. Fine silk ties can look spectacular in a stylish frame in an office or man cave or workshop and can be a fresh twist on the stereotypical Father’s Day gift.

Coasters — Collect these from the most expensive and exotic bars you’ve had the privilege to patronize during your travels and design a custom frame incorporating the primary colors featured. Or, if you find some tile coasters too cute to hide under a glass, frame them together or separately as a set to add the right ambiance to your indoor or outdoor bar.

Centerpieces — Choose a couple gorgeous blooms from that floral masterpiece you spent a couple of weeks putting together and consult with your framer about the best approach to translating them into a breathtaking display you’ll be able to cherish for years.

Money — Bills and coins passed down from the old country, the first or the millionth dollar you earned, the piece of local currency you didn’t have time to spend on your last vacation

’Invisible‘ Doors

HAVE AN ART OF THEIR OWN

Doors and doorways are a bit of a design conundrum; they open up a room to other spaces but create a choppy, closed-off feel to the space from behind.

Luxury home designers have found an elegant solution in “hidden” or “invisible” doors, which can take many forms but generally employ some sort of camouflage to make them difficult to distinguish from the surfaces surrounding it.

Most are frameless, and many have the same color and texture as the wall they are a part of. Others appear to be screens, mirrors or other decorations or furnishings that can be opened or slid aside to expose a closet, bedroom, secret playroom or other enticement.

This makes the hidden door a concept that can work in almost any home, though today it may be in highest demand for modern, minimalist interiors where uninterrupted clean lines are highly valued. In these cases the door is hung flush with the wall and painted the same shade, possibly further obscured by a mural. The hinges are mounted on the inside of the door so the hard-to-see seam

around it and door handle are the only clues to its existence.

Sliding or pocket doors are another route to invisibility, particularly when there isn’t room to accommodate a swinging door. These are harder to keep flush with the walls because they’re concealed inside the walls but in the hands of the right designer can be remarkably subtle.

Another solution that can save some space while providing an element of surprise is

the pivot door, which spins around an axis and can be positioned flush with the wall. Wherever hidden doors are included in a home they confer a sense of luxury and unexpected discovery, whether you’re using the old bookcase trick or hiding an entrance in plain sight. They’re easier to incorporate into your home than you might think, with options everywhere from Home Depot to design houses out of Italy. So give it a try!

RETRO APPLIANCES

Transport Yesterday’s Style

WTO TODAY’S KITCHEN

hen you shop for refrigerators these days you have more features to choose from than ever before. And maybe more designs than you imagine.

If you type in the word “retro” when you’re researching, those high-tech features are combined with a world of color and style.

You’ll start to see red, as in fireengine red doors on a softer-edged fridge. Or orange, or deep blue. If that’s not your style there are plenty of lovely pastel shades to choose from: blue, turquoise, pink, lavender, yellow, cream. Or you can even choose one with Charlie Brown and Snoopy or another nostalgic image etched on the front.

These are drawn from the midcentury modern kitchen of the 1950s and ‘60s. They’re fabulous whether you’re restoring a midcentury kitchen to its former glory or furnishing a contemporary home with throwback-inspired décor. If one won’t work in your kitchen it might knock it out of the park in a game room, workshop or garage. Or consider a cute retro-styled minifridge you can plug in anywhere. Several companies specialize in high-end retro-styled refrigerators, including Big Chill, Unique Appliances, Northstar, Smeg, Classic Retro and Hallman Industries. The size you need may determine which one you buy from, as some sellers are oriented more toward the smaller units

needed for many historic homes. Of course, refrigerators aren’t the only vintage-inspired appliances they make, so you can have a complete kitchen full of midcentury charm and 21st century energy efficiency and other advances.

OVENS AND STOVES

There’s hardly anything more midcentury than the oven/stove combination known as the range, which is produced in just as many colors and sizes as refrigerators and come with as many twist-knobs as their ancestors. This comes as welcome news to those of us who’ve tired of touchscreens and are clamoring for knobs and buttons in their vehicles and elsewhere in their daily lives. Don’t forget all the fun you can have with range hoods, too!

DISHWASHERS

The styling on these hasn’t changed as much as it has for refrigerators and ranges over the last 50 years, but there are still advantages for choosing vintageinspired models for your kitchen, including color choice and the inimitable retro fonts used on their surfaces.

MICROWAVES

Microwaves didn’t arrive in most American kitchens until the 1970s, so “retro” versions adapted for midcentury kitchens use the color and styling for today’s needs.

SPRING CLEAN FOR YOUR HEALTH

The tradition of spring cleaning is a time-honored ritual that gives a new lease on life. Whether it’s organizing your home office or cleaning out a closet, giving your space a once-over can change not only the ambiance of your living space — it can improve your health and well-being.

SPARK SOME JOY

Not long ago you couldn’t watch TV or open a magazine without seeing writer Marie Kondo, author of the The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Her approach to organizing and decluttering revolutionized how people folded their socks. Her famous line, “Does this spark joy?” has become a cultural meme.

Soon after the book The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson took the world by storm, inspiring baby boomers to shed their good china and heavy antiques in compassion for their children, none of whom are interested in acquiring those possessions. Both authors, and the many professional organizers who assist clients going through a household or office purge, advise you to go easy on yourself as you shed possessions.

You may have years of clothes, files, books and tchotchkes, stuff that no longer fits your lifestyle.

Having a buddy or a guide is helpful when decluttering — they can bring a fierce but loving reminder to toss out or recycle just by asking, “When is the last time you used that?”

BENEFITS BEYOND SPACE

There are all kinds of studies that support decluttering is good for your spirit as well as your space. According to psychologists at the Cleveland Clinic, spring cleaning lifts your mood and provides tangible results of your accomplishments.

In colder climates, the tradition is also a way to welcome spring and warm weather. In Germany, people perform the daily ritual of “lüften” (“ventilate” in English) by opening windows to exchange the old, stale air for fresh air. Just opening windows to bring in fresh air can be a boon to your spirits.

The act of cleaning and organizing also can help us de-stress. Knowing just where to find that file and seeing order rather than chaos can give you a feeling of peace. Order reduces distractions and provides us with a sense that all is right with the world.

HOLDS SIMPLE ALLURE Japanese-Style

BATHROOM

Oscar Wilde once said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” If so, then the trend to copy Japanese bathrooms is the highest of compliments. The simplicity of the design is a conscious choice to create a space for harmony, relaxation and soothing of the soul. More than a world away from those frantic early-morning showers of busy Americans from New York to L.A., the Japanese bathroom tradition is one of meditation and peace.

WHAT MAKES A JAPANESE BATHROOM SO JAPANESE?

When designing a Japanese-inspired bathroom, there are elements you may borrow or modify based on your vision and budget.

• First, consider the traditional Japanese tub, the ofuro This barrellooking tub allows the bather to be fully immersed, upright, in hot water. The bathtub is made of wood, adding a whiff of woodsy charm to the experience. Interesting to note that the Japanese bather would most likely already have showered; the bath is for contemplation and relaxation. If you can’t replace your bathtub with a new ofuro, consider carving out time to soak luxuriously in your own tub of hot water, as high as the water will go, and think Zen thoughts. Let yourself let go of daily burdens and revel in the healing water.

• Balance the colors and textures of nature. A Japanese bathroom brings in all the muted colors of nature,

creating a sanctuary of earth tones designed to soothe the mind and the soul. Textures like bamboo, colors of stone and stark simplicity of design are telltale signs of Japanese style. Towels can be nubby and neutral, giving another blend of texture and color to the mix. Keep your bath toys minimal — it’s all about creating a clear space.

• Bring the outside in. To balance those tawny colors, bring in plants and greenery. Not only do plants please the eye but they do their job of keeping the air clean, too. Green and brown complement each other, and elements of stone, whether it’s the flooring or the sink basins, bring more of the forest inside.

• Protect the sanctity of your sanctuary. There’s no room for clutter in a Japanese-style bathroom. Some have separate spaces for the toilet and sink; the bathroom is intended to be a sanctuary not just for the body but also the soul. Soothing music, natural surroundings, maybe even the sound of an indoor waterfall conjure up mindful meditation.

ADAPT AS YOU CAN

Just a touch of a Japanese-style bathroom can give you the kind of vibe you’re looking for, whether it’s a fig tree in the corner or clearing the counters of all clutter. Buy a wooden bath tray and keep it close by. Stock it with good-smelling soaps. Throw in a sprig of something. Whether splurging or on a budget, you can create a Japanese bathroom of your own.

TAILORED FOR NORTHERN ARIZONA

Each of these cities presents landscaping opportunities.

Prescott, with its mix of pine forests and arid terrain, allows for a fusion of drought-resistant evergreens like pinyon pine with ornamental grasses and flowering perennials. Flagstaff’s higher elevation and cooler climate make it ideal for integrating quaking aspen, Arizona fescue and purple coneflower, creating a mountainmodern aesthetic. Sedona, with its dramatic red rock backdrops, embraces agave, desert willow and manzanita for a seamless blend of color and texture.

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

MEETS NATURAL BEAUTY

Sophisticated xeriscaping incorporates sustainable design elements embracing form and function. Drip irrigation, moisture sensors and rainwater harvesting optimize water usage, ensuring plants remain lush while minimizing waste. In luxury landscapes permeable stone pathways, custom fire pits and infinity-edge water features add both elegance and efficiency.
