It is a thriving democratic culture and society shaped by it’s Nordic traditions and strong welfare system where all citizens have equal rights to social security, health and education, Denmark is often referred to as one of the world’s best places to live due to their high level of equality, trust and freedom. Efterskole What is an efterskole? The Danish efterskole is based on the idea of combining academic learning with that of general ‘life-learning’ as a preparatory tool for all aspects of life, as well as facilitating an understanding of ‘the individual in a community’. Solidarity, community and unity are key concepts within the Danish efterskole. The first efterskole was founded about 160 years ago based on the ideas of N.F.S. Grundtvig (1789-1872) who wanted schools to provide enlightenment for life rather than formal vocational training. The Danish efterskole often represents a philosophy of offering such a variety of educational subjects, sports and activities that there is an opportunity for everyone to excel at something, and thus gain the experience and confidence to develop their talents to their own advantage and to the service of others. It is inherent in the culture of many efterskoles that they be a reflection of societal diversity and

thus shall offer a variety of opportunities for personal, professional and cultural development. FREEDOM OF THE EF TERSKOLE Compared to public schools the efterskole has substantial freedom in terms of e.g. choice of subjects, teaching methods and educational approach. These vary in accordance with the school’s political, religious or pedagogical orientation. Freedom of the efterskole is assured by substantial state subsidies to both schools and students. TE ACHER-STUDENT REL ATIONSHIP One of the things that are unique about the efterskole is the teacher-student relationship. The teacher is responsible for both teaching and supervision outside of school hours. This means that teachers and students are together all day from the time they wake up until they go to bed. This often engenders a close, personal and non-formal relationship between students and teachers.

Efterskole life A social and academic year where friendships for life are founded A COMMUNIT Y THAT COMMITS A large community requires boundaries and we build our interaction on trust and respect. It is of the utmost importance that teachers and students collaborate on securing a great stay for everyone. This also means that bullying, alcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited. We stress that students take initiative in relation to activities for each other and all great ideas are rewarded. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is yet another way of recognising the students who make an extra effort for others. STUDENTS CLE AN THEIR OWN ROOMS and keep their own common areas tidy. Contact-groups take turns in preparing breakfast and for one week during the school year all students will have kitchen and practical duties. WEEKEND AC TIVITIES Weekends are flexible and there are opportunities to join in or create activities, as well as relax. Participation in some weekends is obligatory, with classes or activities such as the Open Day. Many of our students come from far away and some will choose to stay at the school for 2-3 weeks at a time. Each month there will be a long weekend or holiday for students to go home or to visit their host families.
In relation to the long weekends and holidays, students have the opportunity to use the bus service that runs to major transport hubs in Denmark. (See last page) WORLD KITCHEN At Ranum Efterskole College, we prioritise healthy food, sustainability and local ingredients. We collect gastronomical experiences and we draw inspiration from our many travels and the guests we receive from all over the world. The kitchen caters also to those with special requirements such as vegans and vegetarians, as well as those with allergies. E VENING AC TIVITIES & FREE TIME Clubs start at 19.30 after dinner and study hour. Programmes change according to the season, and students can suggest new evening activities throughout the school year. Some of the activities include climbing, basketball, badminton, handball, soccer, beach volleyball, sailing and wake boarding, just to name a few. COMMON E VENTS Once a month, all students participate in a common event at the school - such as the Colour Party, the Harvest Festival or the Gala.

The root and the trunk symbolise the community, whilst the circle symbolises the global nature of our school. tlook and international subjects that opens a door to the world EF TERSKOLE , EDUC ATION AND GLOBAL LE ARNING Academic, profile and extracurricular subjects are tied closely together with other important parts of Efterskole life; for example, traveling and life in the evenings and weekends. Our students, through studying a unique range of subjects, as well as living together with others from all over the world, develop into young adults with a global approach to learning. DANISH OR INTERNATIONAL PROGR AMME? We are an Efterskole where our students can choose between the Danish 9th or 10th grade or the international programme, taught in English. It is also possible to choose a combination of the Danish programme and the International programme. All students have 30 academic lessons and 12 profile, culture and activity subject lessons during the school week. The school year culminates with final exams for all students. In profile subjects and extracurricular activities, groups are formed based on individual interests, and are therefore made up of students from both the Danish and international programmes, as well as across all year groups.
Danish programme 9X AND 10+ are high school preparatory and oriented towards the so-called X-youth education programmes in Denmark, such as STX, HHX, HTX. The student completes all subjects with either FP9 or FP10 final exams. In 9X the student has Danish, English, Mathematics, Science, a foreign language, History, Social Science, Religion and P.E. In 10+ you can create your own schedule with many different combinations. The subjects Danish, English, and Mathematics are mandatory, but in 10+ you also get to choose 3 elective subjects - hence the name 10+. In 10+ students also have the opportunity to choose our exam-free or skills programmes.
International programme C AMBRIDGE IGCSE is for 14-17 year olds and stands for the “International General Certificate of Secondary Education “. As an international IG student, you will receive internationally acclaimed education during the school year and an internationally recognised exam certificate. Danish students will have the opportunity to do the Danish FP9 or FP10 exams as well as the international exams. 9IG AND 10IG - are high school preparatory and oriented in part towards further studies in Denmark or overseas. IGCSE
subjects are taught in English, whereas Danish FP9 and FP10 subjects are taught in Danish. However, all classes are based on IGCSE curricula and objectives for the Danish school system. IGCSE does not require special academic prerequisites - but the academic level is slightly higher than the corresponding Danish programme and you must be confident in English - both in speaking and in reading/writing. Non-Danish speakers will always be enrolled in 10IG. FLE XIBLE PROGR AMMES It is possible to combine subjects from both the international and Danish programmes. Students from the Danish programme can, for example, elect to study English as an international subject. International students in 9th grade can also choose Science and Maths as a Danish subject. More information about our flex programmes can be found on the next page.
Teaching at your academic level All students have their own personalised schedule based on their subject choices, interests and future goals. The students are divided into three to four different levels in all academic subjects and it is possible to change level during the school year. INCLUSION AND SUPPORT We are there to help all students regardless of their background and needs. We have two-teacher classes, individual assistant teachers and adult contact teachers. We offer support for dyslexic students and students with learning difficulties. All students have one study hour every day, where they do homework and have the opportunity to seek support from teachers. EF TERSKOLE AND HOME It is important that there is a good dialogue between the school and home - both socially and academically. Students are assessed throughout the school year and feedback is given to both the student and parents regularly. The student receives term grades in October and February, as well as year grades in May. We invite parents and students to three Parents’ Days, where it is possible to meet and talk to contact teachers and subject teachers. A SCHOOL FOR ALL It is important for us to be a school for everyone - regardless of your social and academic background. Our goal is to improve the academic level of every single student, and to prepare them for future endeavours, on both a local and global scale.

Non-Danish-speaking students will be enrolled in 10IG. 9 I G is for students who wish to complete full exams in both the Danish FP9 and the international IGCSE. Lessons are taught in both Danish and English in accordance with the objectives for both syllabuses. 9 I G F l e x is for students, who wish to add an international dimension to their academic profile, but at the same time

Activity subjects It is important to our philosophy of “Participatory Democracy” that students engage actively in suggesting and shaping subjects they have a passion for and that they can try many different activities during the year. This approach ensures that students are motivated and form strong relations based on shared interests.
Activity subjects are taught 1 to 2 lessons per week and changes approximately 3 times in the school year according to the cycle of profile and culture subjects. Activity subjects are extracurricular and therefore exam or test free. They focus team and community building.

Non-Danish-speaking students will be enrolled in 10IG. 1 0 I G is preparatory for upper secondary school and is aimed at: Pre-IB, IB and international schools. 10IG is taught in English according to the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus. Danish is taught at different levels according to the student’s level. 1 0 I G FL E X combines the Danish and international programmes, so it is possible to study both IGCSE and Danish subjects in accordance with objectives in both syllabuses. Expat program: We offer Danish as a 2nd language and a special programme for Danish expat students, which concludes with the FP10 exams.
1 0 + is taught in Danish. The classes are divided according to the academic level in the compulsory subjects Danish, English and Mathematics. Students will choose between the 25+ subjects in order to create their individual academic schedule – some of these electives can be subjects from the international programme. 1 0 + also offers the possibility of an exam-free route or a SKILLS course that focuses on personal development and an opportunity for deeper immersion into different themes or skill sets. The 10+ exam-free route will use more interdisciplinary and project-oriented methods towards a general personal development, whereas 10+SKILLS will focus on practical and real-life experiences.

Personal development and learning in an active community NATURE SPORT & IMAGINATION Profile and activity subjects are divided into two main areas: Nature sport and Imagination; which are comprised of both physical and creative activities. NATURE SPORT A Scandinavian concept of being active in nature, where you engage in skillsbased activities. Examples include diving, sailing and horse riding. During our travels, these skills are implemented and tested. IMAGINATION Designing and forming creative experiences and productions, to inspire and motivate others to participate - this could be playing a concert in Music or creating new furniture out of old pieces in Visual Design. ARE A S OF INTEREST Students and teachers co-create unique learning processes, driven by commitment and the desire to learn together. Profile and culture subjects are integrated into our academic classes and courses, and theory and practice are combined during our travels. Interests can be formed when experiencing or learning new things and meeting new friends.
This means that we do not have the same extracurricular subjects all year. Students and teachers suggest new subjects several times during the year, which are then put to a vote. This process is a strong motivation for both students and teachers to be creative and to realise their dreams! UNIT Y To accept others’ choices of profile and culture subjects is part of the school’s pedagogical goals. We do not believe that all students must always do the same and when we travel in smaller groups, we gain much more insight into the world. PROFILE SUBJEC TS The purpose of profile subjects is to practice a set of skills that are to be used during your profile trip. These skills are developed together with other students that share the same interests. CULTURE SUBJEC TS The theme for culture subjects is world citizenship and globalisation, and it is through this focus that we will meet and interact with other cultures from all around the world. SELF- PAYMENT ON TR AVEL S Subjects and travels are planned and chosen in collaboration between students and teachers, and if a group of students decide to travel further than what is budgeted in tuition fees, then they have the option of establishing self-payment in relation to their travels. Self-payment may vary from 0 - 14.000 DKK.

culture subjects Three periods & 28 travel days The school year is divided into three periods; two profile periods and one culture period. Each period is concluded with a study trip of between 5 to 14 days
Profile subject one: Aug. - Oct. The first profile subject is chosen by the student before the school year starts. As a part of this period, you will learn to set personal goals as well as common goals for the group to achieve together. In diving for example, we train for a PADI Open Water diving certificate in order to complete the qualification on our trip to the Mediterranean at the end of the period.
Culture subject: Oct. - Feb. In the second period, we focus on culture and world citizenship. All subjects focus on the culture of a country or continent e.g. Europe, USA, Nepal, China etc. During our travels we will meet and interact with the local people and build lasting relationships.
Profile subject two: Mar. - May The third period focuses on personal development and enlightenment, by combining content and purposes from the first and second periods. In this period it is also possible for both students and teachers to form new subjects together based on shared interests or common goals.

Street Performance Build your own long-board. A street culture with parkour, free-running, street-skating and challenges! We travel to Paris, Barcelona and Berlin.
Adventure outdoor
Sailing
Mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, running and teambuilding. Adventure races and expeditions to Sweden or Scotland push your limits.
We have 12 sailing boats and a large racing boat. Learn navigation, practical sailing and racing. Get a certificate of competence and join us on sailing trips to Greece and Croatia.

Surfing
eSport is for both boys and girls. We focus on history, tactics, teamwork and communication in WOW, LoL, CSGO, DOTA & Starcraft.
Surfing takes place in Cold Hawaii: Klitmøller. You get to learn about the waves, safety, paddling, and “take off”. We travel to Portugal or Morocco.
Stronger Hard training, challenges and lots of fun. Circuit, strength and fitness training mixed with martial arts. We travel to Germany or Iceland.
Wakeboarding We wakeboard on our own park in Rønbjerg, we learn balance, tricks, jumps and safety. We travel to different places in Denmark and Europe.
Scuba Diving
Windsurfing
We have PADI Open Water, Advanced and PADI Rescue courses, so you can dive all over the world. We have our own scuba diving equipment. We travel to the Red Sea or Malta. .
Feel the wind and learn to steer sail and board. We have a large surf trailer with all equipment rigged and ready to go windsurfing locally. We travel to the Mediterranean.

Music
Hip hop, funk, show and modern. We teach both beginners and advanced dancers in the two dance halls. We have made flashmobs and performed in London and Beijing.
Interplay and singing on several levels and the opportunity to make your own recordings in our recording studio. You don’t need to be proficient. We travel to London and other big cities in Europe.

Media
Cheerleading has many different elements. We work with acrobatics, tumbling, lifting, throwing and choreography.
Photography, film and Graphic Design. We have a modern MAC workshop with a large format printer. We travel to the biggest cities in Europe.

Sustainable Education
Students are expected to take an active role in creating their own learning journey by the choices of subjects and activities they make. Students will learn to set goals and take the steps that will lead them to their goals. During this journey, students will also gain an understanding of their own imprint on the World and the future - something we refer to as sustainable education.

In the Green Fingers project, students work on ecology in their own gardens, while goats, rabbits and chickens feed on our green food scraps.

Greenfingers
Coral Restoration
Less talk – more action! The world is changing and we need to use nature’s resources responsibly; the key words are sustainability, animal welfare and self-sufficiency.
In the large aquarium, corals grow five times faster than in the wild, and students help split and cultivate the corals. This provides an understanding of how climate change is affecting and altering the ecosystems in and around our oceans.
The Greenfingers Project is a project where students get closer to nature and learn through hands-on work. Green fingers are not a must - but dirty fingers are inevitable.
Students actively work with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: Climate Action, Life Under Water and Life on Land, and travel to see how local people are taking responsibility to grow new coral forests and fight plastic in the world’s oceans and in our local environment. Students also learn to dive and help care for coral farms in places like the Caribbean.

Strong team We are 96 members of staff, comprising of teachers, administration, house fairies, kitchen, technical and management staff. Our staff group is represented by a variety of different educational backgrounds, ages, experiences, skills and nationalities, which strengthens the diversity and international environment at the school. PROFESSIONAL TE ACHERS Teachers are typically teacher or university graduates, and many have an additional qualification from Cambridge Assessment International Education in the international subjects. HOUSE FAIRIES AND ELVES In each house there is an adult, who takes on the role of nurse, parent, counselor - we call them house fairies and elves and their main function is to secure the well-being of the students and they always have time for a chat. GUEST TE ACHERS Every year we are visited by guest teachers and friends of the school. Guest teachers typically live at the school and follow the efterskole life.
INTERNATIONAL INTERNS We welcome international teacher trainees and students for up to 6 months every year. TR AINEES Trainees are typically former students who participate in a one year trainee programme, where they work and educate themselves to become instructors of, for example, scuba diving, sailing or sports. YOUTH GUIDES Youth Guides are former students who wish to use their experiences to assist at weekends, on short courses and during the study trips. Ranum is one of the oldest educational towns in Denmark and since its foundation in 1848, more than 5000 teachers have graduated from this place. From 1987 to 2011 the school educated pedagogs.
The first provost of the college, Ludvig Christian Müller, was a great personality. He taught H.C. Andersen and Søren Kirkegaard, and he had socially interacted with N.F.S. Grundtvig and Kristian Kold. Thus, Ranum Teachers’ College was from the beginning strongly influenced by the learning philosophies of Grundtvig and Kold - A legacy continued to this day.

FIVE HOUSES - ONE L ARGE COMMUNIT Y With 450+ students enrolled, Ranum Efterskole College is now one of the largest general efterskoles in Denmark. The students will stay at our 21,900m2 campus in five different houses: Kærhuset, Seminariehuset, Lien, Præstegården and Ranumhus.
There is plenty of room for everyone! Ranum Efterskole College is located in picturesque North-West Jutland near the Western coastline. L ARGE AND SMALL COMMUNITIES 50 contact groups reside in each of the five houses. Each contact group consists of 10-12 students, and each group is appointed a personal contact teacher. These groups eat, clean and cook together.

Ephrata Mebrat from Ethiopia Ranum, the place I still call my home, my safe place and my happiness. When I got the chance to go study in Denmark, in a small town where there are no more than 1000 people I was a bit scared but mostly excited. Lucky me that place was about to change my life. If I was given one word to describe Ranum Efterskole, it would be home. This place thought me how to love and accept anyone for who they are and also most importantly to not judge a book by it’s cover. Cause at the end of the day there is a lot of interesting things to learn from it. I was able to get close with people and make more friends who at the end turned into being my family. Starting from my roommate, too housemates, to house parents and Ranum staff. These are people and experiences that I will cherish and keep deeply in my heart.

Silvana Sansores from Mexico Ranum for me was a break from my reality, where I could be what I wanted to be. I remember how the first days when you really don’t know anyone, everyone was so nice. Both teachers and students were truly welcoming and no one was afraid to be themselves. One of my favorite things about the school, is that the teachers are really your friends. I have never in my entire life experienced that my teacher could be my friend – a friend who I could talk to about my problems, or just have a nice and random conversation with. I love how they are really involved and how they care about making the Efterskole life memorable for all of us.

My Profile Subject Adventure was a really great way to begin the school year, because we quickly became close friends. Helio Leung from Hong Kong Ranum Efterskole gave me a new perspective on how learning can be approached. I realized that learning did not have to be just doing what you were told, instead we were encouraged to think outside of the box, and to put emphasis on the process. I completed high school in Canada after Ranum, although being half a globe away, I held onto the Danish values of freedom, equality, and sense of community, several elements that were important at Ranum. I also brought with me the same attitude of learning while doing activities I that I enjoy. International Summer school Ranum International Summer school is for students aged 14-17. During your stay you will experience a fantastic community with young people from all over the world. Duration: Two, three or four weeks usually from end of June to end of July. PROFILE SUBJEC TS At the International Summer School, you choose between many different and exciting subjects and activities. Music, Design, Gastronomy, Football, Dance, or Sailing. In addition, we play ball games, have Team-building activities, eSports and a whole lot of other things. E XCURSIONS We go on excursions to lakes, forests and the Limfjord, and we visit museums, major cities and other attractions in the local area. Every month we organise guided tours, which typically take place on Sunday afternoons. We first give a presentation about the school’s values, teaching, activities and trips, and then the students show you around the school. At the end there are refreshments in the dining room, where you can have a personal chat with a teacher at the school.
At the end of September and second week of January, Ranum Efterskole College is ready to give you an experience of ”Efterskole life”. International students who do not have a Danish CPR number (Danish national social security number) are required to add the Ranum Host Package to their stay. This additional package includes: • One Autumn holiday package: may include Host family visit or excursion. • One Christmas holiday package: may include Host family visit or excursion. • One Easter holiday package. • Long weekend packages (Thursday-Sunday/ Friday-Monday): may include Host family visit. • Personal mentor: that understands the cultural and educational background of Denmark, as well as speaking the native language (native language may not be possible in all cases). • Visa: assistance in relation to the ST1 application process and payment of Case Order ID Fee. • Health insurance: assistance in relation to applying for the Danish National Health Insurance.

Who can attend? Ranum Efterskole College is open to Danish and international students from the age of 14 to the age of 17. International students can sign up for IGCSE classes the year they turn 14. Students can attend Ranum Efterskole College for one or two years and combine their study with studies abroad before and/or after. REGIS TR ATION OF RE SIDENCE IN DENMARK Prior to your arrival to Ranum Efterskole College, it is important to make sure all procedures and documents related to your stay in Denmark are completed. Here is a short overview of the procedures foreign students must be aware of before they come to Ranum Efterskole College. For more information on how to register your residency in Denmark, it is encouraged that you contact the Danish Embassy / Representation in your country, or affiliated with your country. See also www.nyidanmark.dk International students with Danish citizenship, who are not under the Full Host Package programme must ensure that a CPR number is acquired prior to the first day of school and that registration of address in Denmark is completed as well. Students with citizenship in Greenland are obligated to register their new address in Denmark upon arrival to the school (Flytteanmeldelse). Students with citizenship in Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Faroe Islands and Finland) are obligated to register their arrival from foreign countries (Anmeldelse af indrejse). For the above three categories The forms can be retrieved from the Civil Registry (borgerservice) in the Municipality to which they are moving.
EU/EEA citizens and Swiss citizens can live, work and study in DK under the EU regulations on freedom of movement. Consequently, they do not need a visitor’s visa, residence or work permit. However, they must obtain an EU residence document (registration certificate) from SIRI. See www. nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_ dk/studies/ studies.htm for more details. Please note that students under 18 years of age and enrolled in a basic youth programme such as efterskole, must apply as a person with sufficient funds and not as a student. https://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-GB/You-wantto-apply/Residence-as-a-Nordic-citizen-or-EUor-EEA-citizen/EU-Self-support Citizens of Non-EU/EEA and Non-Nordic Countries need a residence permit to study in Denmark. The application process for a residence permit usually takes a considerable length of time (2-3months) - and you should therefore start the application process immediately upon receipt of the letter of the admission! In order to start the application process, Ranum Efterskole College must complete Part 2 of the ST1 application form. Please note that it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that registration of address, the acquisition of cpr number and reseidence pemits are completed prior to the first day of school. Only Full Host students and AFS students are excempt from this requirement. International students under the Full Host Programme or the AFS programme will be assisted by Ranum Efterskole College and taken to the local Municipality.
