An efterskole life cannot be described in words - it has to be experienced!
Denmark is a small country in Scandinavia, Northern Europe, with a population of 5,7 million. It is a thriving democratic culture and society shaped by it’s Nordic traditions and strong welfare system where all citizens have equal rights to social security, health and education,
Denmark is often referred to as one of the world’s best places to live due to their high level of equality, trust and freedom.
Other characteristics for Denmark include:
• The 2nd least corrupt country in the world, according to transparency.org
• Having a free and liberal education system, making Ranum Efterskole College possible.
• Renewable energy with over a third of Denmark’s total electricity consumption produced by wind power.
• Home to well known brands such as LEGO, MÆRSK, Vestas and Pandora.
• The term “hygge”, which is more like a feeling than an actual thing. See the quote below.
• Bicycles everywhere. They even have their own lanes in most cities.
• The land of fairy tales from the mind of Hans Christian Andersen.
• Highly respected for it’s design, architecture, film and arts
• One of the oldest monarchies in the world with a history that stretches back to the Viking Age.
• Considered one of the happiest countries in the world.
In a nutshell, Denmark and Ranum Efterskole College is an ideal starting point for young people, who want to explore Scandinavian culture, heritage and language, whilst still pursuing an international education in Europe.
It’s location in Northern Europe and it’s many connections to other European countries and the rest of the world, offers many opportunities for further exploration and continuation of studies.
The Danish efterskole is a well-established independent, educational and residential institution for students aged 14-18
What is an efterskole? The Danish efterskole is based on the idea of combining academic learning with that of general ‘life-learning’ as a preparatory tool for all aspects of life, as well as facilitating an understanding of ‘the individual in a community’. Solidarity, community and unity are key concepts within the Danish efterskole.
The first efterskole was founded about 160 years ago based on the ideas of N.F.S. Grundtvig (1789-1872) who wanted schools to provide enlightenment for life rather than formal vocational training.
The Danish efterskole often represents a philosophy of offering such a variety of educational subjects, sports and activities that there is an opportunity for everyone to excel at something, and thus gain the experience and confidence to develop their talents to their own advantage and to the service of others.
It is inherent in the culture of many efterskoles that they be a reflection of societal diversity and
thus shall offer a variety of opportunities for personal, professional and cultural development.
FREEDOM OF THE EFTERSKOLE
Compared to public schools the efterskole has substantial freedom in terms of e.g. choice of subjects, teaching methods and educational approach. These vary in accordance with the school’s political, religious or pedagogical orientation. Freedom of the efterskole is assured by substantial state subsidies to both schools and students.
One of the things that are unique about the efterskole is the teacher-student relationship. The teacher is responsible for both teaching and supervision outside of school hours. This means that teachers and students are together all day from the time they wake up until they go to bed. This often engenders a close, personal and non-formal relationship between students and teachers.
My year at Ranum Efterskole College has been transformational. It has undoubtedly been the best year of my life, and one that helped to define me as a person” Nicoline Skov Jørgensen, Denmark
A social and academic year where friendships for life are founded
A large community requires boundaries and we build our interaction on trust and respect. It is of the utmost importance that teachers and students collaborate on securing a great stay for everyone. This also means that bullying, alcohol, drugs and smoking are prohibited.
We stress that students take initiative in relation to activities for each other and all great ideas are rewarded. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is yet another way of recognising the students who make an extra effort for others.
STUDENTS CLEAN THEIR OWN ROOMS and keep their own common areas tidy. Contact-groups take turns in preparing breakfast and for one week during the school year all students will have kitchen and practical duties.
Weekends are flexible and there are opportunities to join in or create activities, as well as relax. Participation in some weekends is obligatory, with classes or activities such as the Open Day. Many of our students come from far away and some will choose to stay at the school for 2-3 weeks at a time. Each month there will be a long weekend or holiday for students to go home or to visit their host families.
In relation to the long weekends and holidays, students have the opportunity to use the bus service that runs to major transport hubs in Denmark. (See last page)
WORLD KITCHEN
At Ranum Efterskole College, we prioritise healthy food, sustainability and local ingredients. We collect gastronomical experiences and we draw inspiration from our many travels and the guests we receive from all over the world.
The kitchen caters also to those with special requirements such as vegans and vegetarians, as well as those with allergies.
EVENING ACTIVITIES & FREE TIME
Clubs start at 7.30 pm after dinner and study hour. Programmes change according to the season, and students can suggest new evening activities throughout the school year. Some of the activities include climbing, basketball, badminton, handball, soccer, beach volleyball, sailing and wake boarding, just to name a few.
COMMON EVENTS
Once a month, all students participate in a common event at the school - such as the Colour Party, the Harvest Festival or the Gala.
The tree of life is the logo of Ranum Efterskole College. The tree symbolises the diversity and the broadness of the school. The root and the trunk symbolise the community, whilst the circle symbolises the global nature of our school. Students will experience moving out onto the thin branches, discover and grab experiences and excitement to bring back to the community.
The circle of Togetherness is Ranum Efterskole College’s new symbol of community, friendship and our shared responsibility for a sustainable future.
A day at Ranum contains it all
You go to school, you have Profile Subjects, activities and duties together and you are with your friends all the time.
CAMBRIDGE IGCSE (9IG and 10IG) is for 14-17 year olds and stands for “International General Certificate of Secondary Education”. Teaching is mainly in English and is organised
both according to the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum, as well as the subject objectives for secondary school. As an IG student, you can gain a Danish FP9 or FP10 school leaving certificate, as well as an internationally recognised qualification and diploma that can take you further both in Denmark and globally.
The IGCSE curriculum does not require any special academic qualifications, but the academic level is higher than an equivalent Danish course and you must be confident in speaking and writing English.
“My year at Ranum Efterskole College was by far the best year of my life!” Maya Malek, GreeceEFTERSKOLE, EDUCATION AND GLOBAL LEARNING
Academic, Profile and extracurricular subjects are tied closely together with other important parts of Efterskole life; for example, traveling and life in the evenings and weekends. Our students, through studying a unique range of subjects, as well as living together with others from all over the world, develop into young adults with a global approach to learning.
DANISH OR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME?
We are an Efterskole where our students can choose between the Danish 9th or 10th grade or the international programme, taught in English. It is also possible to choose a combination of the Danish programme and the International programme. All students have 30 academic lessons and 12 Profile, Culture and Activity Subject lessons during the school week. The school year culminates with final exams for all students. In Profile Subjects and extracurricular activities, groups are formed based on individual interests, and are therefore made up of students from both the Danish and international programmes, as well as across all year groups.
9X AND 10+ are high school preparatory and oriented towards the so-called X-youth education programmes in Denmark, such as STX, HHX, HTX. The student completes all subjects with either FP9 or FP10 final exams. In 9X the student has Danish, English, Mathematics, Science, a foreign language, History, Social Science, Religion and P.E. In 10+ you can create your own schedule with many different combinations. The subjects Danish, English, and Mathematics are mandatory, but in 10+ you also get to choose 3 elective subjects - hence the name 10+. In 10+ students also have the opportunity to choose our exam-free or skills programmes.
CAMBRIDGE IGCSE is for 14-17 year olds and stands for the “International General Certificate of Secondary Education “. As an international IG student, you will receive internationally acclaimed education during the school year and an internationally recognised exam certificate. Danish students will have the opportunity to do the Danish FP9 or FP10 exams as well as the international exams.
9IG AND 10IG - are high school preparatory and oriented in part towards further studies in Denmark or overseas.
IGCSE subjects are taught in English, whereas Danish FP9 and FP10 subjects are taught in Danish. However, all classes are based on IGCSE curricula and objectives for the Danish school system. IGCSE does not require special academic prerequisites - but the academic level is slightly higher than the corresponding Danish programme and you must be confident in English - both in speaking and in reading/writing. Non-Danish speakers will always be enrolled in 10IG.
FLEXIBLE PROGRAMMES
It is possible to combine subjects from both the international and Danish programmes. Students from the Danish programme can, for example, elect to study English as an international subject. International students in 9th grade can also choose Science and Maths as a Danish subject. More information about our flex programmes can be found on the next page.
All students have their own personalised schedule based on their subject choices, interests and future goals. The students are divided into three to four different levels in all academic subjects and it is possible to change level during the school year.
We are there to help all students regardless of their background and needs. We have two-teacher classes, individual assistant teachers and adult contact teachers. We offer support for dyslexic students and students with learning difficulties. All students have one study hour every day, where they do homework and have the opportunity to seek support from teachers.
It is important that there is a good dialogue between the school and home - both socially and academically. Students are assessed throughout the school year and feedback is given to both the student and parents regularly. The student receives term grades in October and February, as well as year grades in May. We invite parents and students to three Parents’ Days, where it is possible to meet and talk to contact teachers and subject teachers.
It is important for us to be a school for everyone - regardless of your social and academic background. Our goal is to improve the academic level of every single student, and to prepare them for future endeavours, on both a local and global scale.
The combination of doing all my subjects at IGCSE level and going on the culture trip, where you meet other young people from different cultures around the world, was perfect for me. I don’t think, this can be found anywhere else than Ranum.” Hannah Ørum Lauridsen, Greenland

CHOOSE THREE DIFFERENT ACTIVITY SUBJECTS DURING THE YEAR
It is important to our philosophy of “Participatory Democracy” that students engage actively in suggesting and shaping subjects they have a passion for and that they can try many different activities during the year. This approach ensures that students are motivated and form strong relations based on shared interests.
Activity subjects are taught 1 to 2 lessons per week and changes approximately 3 times in the school year according to the cycle of Profile and Culture Subjects. Activity Subjects are extracurricular and therefore exam or test free. They focus team and community building.

The 10+ exam-free route will use more interdisciplinary and project-oriented methods towards a general personal development, whereas 10+SKILLS will focus on practical and real-life experiences.
Efterskole College can only guarantee the availability of a subject if a sufficient number of students sign up for it.
We believe that we learn best when we are involved in interest-based-communities. Therefore Profile and Activity Subjects are divided into two main areas: Nature sport and Imagination; which are comprised of both physical and creative activities. The two profiles contain Profile Subjects, which are about learning a specific activity, and Culture Subjects, which are about the world we live in.
AREAS OF INTEREST
Students and teachers co-create unique learning processes, driven by commitment and the desire to learn together. Profile and Culture
Subjects are integrated into our academic classes and courses, and theory and practice are combined during our travels. Interests can be formed when experiencing or learning new things and meeting new friends.
LEARN TO MAKE A CHOICE
Our interests change as we learn new things and meet new friends, Therefore, we do not have the same extra-curricular subjects all year. Students and teachers suggest new subjects several times during the year, which are then put to a vote. This process is a strong motivation for both students and teachers to be creative and to realise their dreams!
UNITY
To accept others’ choices of Profile and Culture Subjects is part of the school’s pedagogical goals. We do not believe that all students must always
Surf was the coolest subject ever, because you got to have fun with all your friends in the water and because there was room for everyone - no matter if you were pro or a beginner.”
Four periods,
The school year is divided into four periodsbthat we have prepared for through the Profile and We travel to learn and experience through new co-creations and
The first Profile Subject is chosen by the student before the school year starts. As a part of this period, you will learn to set personal goals as well as common goals for the group to achieve together. e.g. the sailors learn to navigate and sail a boat in the Mediterranean. The music team prepares concerts and travels to a big city. The Scuba Divers go diving in Egypt and get a PADI Open Water Certificate.
The theme trips Winter Life with Skiing in the Nordic countries or Big City Culture provides an opportunity to gather students across all houses and subjects around common teaching and educational goals. It strengthens the students’ sense of unity and provides a common reference point during their stay. This is why we will be travelling to Prague and Skiing in the Nordics again in the coming years. The joint trip is included in the school fees, as the budget is the same for everyone.
Isabella Gersig Pedersen - Profile subject: Surf in Somo, Portugaldo the same and when we travel in smaller groups, we gain much more insight into the world.
NATURE SPORT
A Scandinavian concept of being active in nature, where you engage in skills-based activities. Examples include diving, sailing and horse riding.
IMAGINATION
Designing and forming creative experiences and productions, to inspire and motivate others to participate - this could be playing a concert in Music or creating new furniture out of old pieces in Visual Design.
PROFILE & CULTURE SUBJECTS
The purpose of Profile Subjects is to practice a set of skills that are to be used during your profile trip. These skills are developed together with other students who share the same interests. The theme for Culture Subjects is world citizenship and globalisation, and it is through this focus that
we will meet and interact with other cultures from all around the world.
SELF-PAYMENT ON TRAVELS
Subjects and travels are planned and chosen in collaboration between students and teachers, and if a group of students decide to travel further than what is budgeted in tuition fees, then they have the option of establishing self-payment in relation to their travels. Self-payment may vary from 0 - 15.000 DKK.
The proces of choosing Profile and Culture Subjects teaches the students how to prioritise and save up for their dream travels. It is an important lesson in growing up.
The trip to Nepal made me reflect on my life, how good things are in Denmark and how much we take for granted. The trip taught me about a different culture, a different way of life and a country completely different than Denmark.”
Fiona Lønvig Jensen - Culture subject: Nepal Friendship School
see timeline. Each period ends with a journey Culture subjects, as well as the academic subjects. encounters with other cultures and young people in the world.
The Culture and Profile Subject trips are chosen in September through a democratic process where both students and staff can make suggestions for Culture Subjects. The Culture Subjects can be based on a Profile Subject, e.g. Nepal High Trek, but should be based on themes such as nature, sports, religion, politics, gastronomy, history, etc. The course ends with a Cultural Trip, which usually involves meetings with local organisations, school visits and meetings with local youth. During the Culture Trip, students will immerse themselves in one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and present their experiences in a project. Culture Subjects and travelling are the best classroom in the world!
The Profile Subject expeditions are also suggested and chosen by students and staff. The goal is to have the opportunity to try out new Profile Subjects within the Imagination and Naturesports profile, to push personal boundaries and become more courageous. The programme takes place during the exam period and concludes with an expedition in Denmark or the Nordic countries.
Nature Sport and Imagination are the basis for many Profile Subjects, Students can suggest new Profile Subjects, which is why we develop new subjects two times a year, a selection of which are here:

Students are expected to take an active role in creating their own learning journey by the choices of subjects and activities they make. Students will learn to set goals and take the steps that will lead them to their goals. During this journey, students will also gain an understanding of their own imprint on the World and the future - something we refer to as sustainable education.
CO-RESPONSIBILITY CREATES FORMATION
Efterskole life is about both professional and personal development, where you grow first and foremost by being part of a community. The journey from youth to adulthood is about seeing life and your future and sometimes putting yourself aside for the greater good: creating a good future for all. We have a shared commitment to focus on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
All students participate in the kitchen during their time at the efterskole - from preparing breakfast to evening refreshments.
Together with the students, we try to create a food universe where our focus is the good meal and community.
Our students will learn to use their senses and expand their their gastronomic horizons during their time at efterskole. The food should not only taste good, but also look inviting, which is why we also work with presentation, flavours, colours and how the food is presented at the buffets.
SUSTAINABILITY ON THE AGENDA
We have created a large coral laboratory, where we focus on the conservation of coral reefs, and in science we plant CO2 forest and build insect hotels.
In the Green Fingers Project, students work on ecology in their own gardens, while goats, rabbits and chickens feed on our green food scraps. Around the school in various spots, you will find wild flowers and plants.
HELP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We travel 3 times a year, consequently creating a bigger carbon footprint, therefore it is highly important to work on more climate-friendly projects: We buy green power from wind energy, sort waste, focus on sustainability in the kitchen, and recycle and refurbish most of our furniture.
In the large aquarium, corals grow five times faster than in the wild, and students help split and cultivate the corals. This provides an understanding of how climate change is affecting and altering the ecosystems in and around our oceans.
Students actively work with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: Climate Action, Life Under Water and Life on Land, and travel to see how local people are taking responsibility to grow new coral forests and fight plastic in the world’s oceans and in our local environment. Students also learn to dive and help care for coral farms in places like the Caribbean.
We invite you to a colourful year
At the start of the school year, the staff team invites you to a big colour party, celebrating diversity and community.
We are 96 members of staff, comprising of teachers, administration, house fairies, kitchen, technical and management staff. Our staff group is represented by a variety of different educational backgrounds, ages, experiences, skills and nationalities, which strengthens the diversity and international environment at the school. Many staff live at the school and in the local area.
PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS
Teachers are typically teacher or university graduates, and many have an additional qualification from Cambridge Assessment International Education in the international subjects.
HOUSE FAIRIES AND ELVES
In each house there is an adult, who takes on the role of nurse, parent, counselor - we call them house fairies and elves and their main function is to secure the well-being of the students and they always have time for a chat.
GUEST TEACHERS
Every year we are visited by guest teachers and friends of the school. Guest teachers typically live at the school and follow the efterskole life.
INTERNATIONAL INTERNS
We welcome international teacher trainees and students for up to 6 months every year.
TRAINEES
Trainees are typically former students who participate in a one year trainee programme, where they work and educate themselves to become instructors of, for example, scuba diving, sailing or sports.
YOUTH GUIDES
Youth Guides are former students who wish to use their experiences to assist at weekends, on short courses and during the study trips.
ESC : EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CORPSE
Every year, we invite young European university graduates to experience the culture of Denmark and volunteer in Ranum Efterskole College. They participate in teaching, leisure activities and study trips as a part of the team.

The idea behind Ranum Efterskole College came to light in 2002 in relation to a development project in the town of Ranum. Two years later, Ranum Efterskole College opened its doors in Kærhuset and in 2007, became an international school. In 2013, it was the largest bilingual efterskole with a full Cambridge IGCSE programme. Today, the school is the third largest efterskole with over 500 students from more than 25 countries, with over 50 different subjects being taught.
With 500+ students enrolled, Ranum Efterskole College is now one of the largest general efterskoles in Denmark.
The students will stay at our 29,500m2 campus in five different houses: Kærhuset, Seminariehuset, Lien, Præstegården and Ranumhus.
There is plenty of room for everyone! Ranum Efterskole College is located in picturesque North-West Jutland near the Western coastline.
LARGE AND SMALL COMMUNITIES
50 contact groups are allocated to each of the 3 main houses. Each contact group consists of 10-12 students, and each group is appointed a personal contact teacher. These groups eat, clean and cook together.
The school’s values and focus on diversity, student democracy and international outlook went against a trend, where other efterskoles turned into so-called profile schools for sport, musik, P.E. etc. Many therefore doubted that Ranum Efterskole College would survive, but after a few years, people began to speak about of the miracle of Ranum. The idea that students and teachers collaboratively could shape their school year and form communities through democratic elections won. The miracle lives on and is in constant development.
“It is an experience that you will never forget.” Michelle Norris, Spain
Ranum is one of Denmark’s oldest educational towns and since its beginning in 1848, more than 5000 teachers have graduated from the teachers programme at Ranum State College. The teacher programme was moved in 1987 and up until 2011, the buildings housed the Pedagog programme and the uppersecondary youth education programme ‘HF’. In 2009, Ranum Efterskole acquired the buildings and formally took over in 2011. In 2013, Ranum Efterskole acquired Ranumhus, a former sports folk high school, and later more houses around the town.
The first Principal of Ranum State College, Ludvig Christian Müller, was a great personality. He was though to have taught the author Hans Christian Andersen and the philosopher Søren Kirkegaard. L.C. Müller knew Grundtvig and Christian Kold, whoose views and ideas about school would also infleunce Ranum State College. This legacy has been continued by Ranum Efterskole College and the proud traditions in relation to education are brought out into the whole World.
Something magical happens during an efterskole year. Not everyone notices it while it’s happening, but when you stop and notice, you discover that time outside the classroom has a very special value. Time spent in hallways, rooms, weekends, evening activities and all the little moments of community and togetherness add up to a unique experience that can’t be found anywhere else.
The more you give of yourself to efterskole life, the more community and magic, efterskole life gives back. That’s why an efterskole year feels much more than an ordinary year.
The highlights of the year are collected in a Yearbook of over 600 pages. Read how some students and parents experience a year at Ranum - and you can meet some of our former students here: www.ranumefterskole.dk/en/elevhistorier/
“Ranum, the place I still call my home, my safe place and my happiness. When I got the chance to go study in Denmark, in a small town where there are no more than 1000 people, I was nervous, especially coming from the other side of the world. However, I was quickly adapted well into the Danish community, where I was welcomed with open arms. I was very lucky to have been able to experience the best year of my life, where I was challenged to do things that I would have never done in my life, and experience so many different cultures and opportunities within the span of one year. Ranum is a place, where you can become independent, start making your own choices and appreciate the little things in life. It’s a place that I will always call home and will cherish for the rest of my life. [...] I’ve made lifelong connections and friendships that I will never let go of. If there is one sentence to describe Ranum, it would be a family [...]”.
“ My school year has been lovely, full of learning about Danish culture and their people. The thing I gained most from being here, was the friends and the travels. Ranum affected me as a person, by making me realise that home can be anywhere.
It is not always about where your family is, but about where you are most comfortable and safe. A place where you turn strangers into brothers and sisters. Being awarded “Mr. Ranum of the Year” at the Galla made my year whole, and made me realise that you can make an impact on other people, just by being yourself.
Thank you so much for everything Ranum”
One of my favorite things about this school is that teachers are really your friends.”
Silvana Sansores from Mexico
“I enjoyed a lot of things at REC, but the best two things were the trips and time that I sent with good people. Every trip that I went on, gave me unforgettable memories. I learned new things like skiing, and even made new friends from different places! Also, I really liked the time that I spent with my friends and some teachers who sometimes feels like friends to me. It was fun to just talk with them, and because we were all from different countries and cultures, it was very interesting to listen to them.
From REC, I learned how to be myself and how to live together, which is completely new to me. Because I didn’t go back to my home for a year and stayed alone for some weekends, I had a lot of time to think about myself and I even started to write a diary that year. So now I know more about myself. And it was my first time to live in a dorm, so this experience made me learn, how to live with people other cultures and counties than mine.
Before I came to REC, because the process to come was so fast (last minute availability), I didn’t have many expectations about the school. But after I came back to my country, every time I was asked about [my experience], I answered that REC 22/23 was a wonderful time and experience for me. I made new friends from all around the world, had a time to think about me, and travelled a lot (six countries in total). REC gave me a lot of chances to experience many things and if someone ask me about whether to go to REC or not, I would say ‘Yes’.”

AfterRanum provided me with lots of great opportunities, enabled me to recognise my abilities and to be prepared to face future challenges. Today I am studying for the IB Diploma in Sweden and plan to go to university in Copenhagen afterwards.”

“My year at Ranum Efterskole was truly a once in a lifetime experience and has greatly impacted who I am today. I discovered so much about me and my passions during my year there. I made friendships that will last a lifetime and I gained confidence in myself and my abilities.
I stayed in Denmark after Ranum and completed my IB Diploma and became fluent in Danish. I am now studying my Bachelor Degrees in Foreign Languages and Business Administration here in Denmark.”
“Ranum Efterskole allowed me to evolve socially and learn things about myself that I would have never learned, if I had stayed in the States. I met some of my closest friends in Ranum and got the chance to explore a culture different than mine.
My credits transferred back to my New York high school and I think it prepared me for living independently at college. I would recommend it to anyone because my time there definitely shaped who I am today for the better!”
“Ranum Efterskole gave me a new perspective on how learning can be approached.
I realized that learning did not have to be just doing what you were told, instead we were encouraged to think outside of the box, and to put emphasis on the process.
I completed high school in Canada after Ranum, although being half a globe away, I held onto the Danish values of freedom, equality, and sense of community, several elements that were important at Ranum.
I also brought with me the same attitude of learning while doing activities I that I enjoy. I met tons of friends from different countries in Canada, and it reminded me of how student from all over the world became one at Ranum.
I am now in Europe and I am studying media and film in Budapest.”
