Retail Association of Nevada, Three Square, and Food Bank of Northern Nevada urge Nevada’s congressional delegation to reject cuts
LAS VEGAS, NV — In response to proposed federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Retail Association of Nevada, Three Square Food Bank, and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada urge Nevada’s congressional delegation to reject SNAP cuts that would devastate families and local economies across the state.
“SNAP drives over a billion dollars in spending at nearly 2,000 grocery stores across Nevada,” said Bryan Wachter, Senior Vice President of the Retail Association of Nevada. “Every dollar supports local jobs, stabilizes families, and strengthens our economy. If Congress cuts this lifeline, Nevadans will turn to state leaders to fill the gap.”
In 2024, SNAP served more than 505,000 Nevadans—1 in 6 state residents—with targeted, timely food assistance. Proposed federal legislation could reduce benefits, impose stricter eligibility requirements, and shift financial responsibility to the states, creating a potentially devastating gap in hunger relief services.
“SNAP is the most efficient way to fight hunger at scale,” said Beth Martino, President and CEO of Three Square. “Food banks like ours are already stretched, and we cannot replace what Congress may take away.”
SNAP is the nation’s most effective tool foraddressingfoodinsecurity.InNevada, the program lifted 57,000 people above the poverty line eachyearbetween2015 and2019, including 27,000 children. More than 62 percentofSNAP participants inthestate are in families with children, and more than 40 percentarein working households.
“If Congress guts SNAP, Nevada must beready,”said NicoleLamboley, Presidentand CEO of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. “Withouta stateplan, thousandswill beleft behind— and that burden will fall on already strained nonprofits.”
Immediate action is needed to protect Nevada’s families, stabilize our economy, and ensure our state is prepared to meet this growingchallenge.Nevadans are urged to contacttheir federal and state representatives to voice supportfor protecting SNAPfunding.
The Retail Association of Nevada (RAN) represents the state’sretail community, advocating for policies that support economic growth, job creation, andthewell-beingofNevada’s businesses and consumers.
