IN TODAY’S RETAIL ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY AND SECURITY ARE MORE CRITICAL THAN ever, not only for protecting assets but also for ensuring the well-being of employees and customers. As the retail industry grapples with challenges like theft, inventory management, and general workplace safety, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a vital tool in addressing these issues effectively. AI’s capabilities are transforming the retail landscape, offering innovative solutions that improve safety measures and optimize operational efficiency.
Theft and organized retail crime are significant concerns for retailers, with losses that can run into billions annually. AI technology is proving instrumental in combating these challenges. By integrating AI with video surveillance systems, retailers can now detect suspicious behaviors and potential theft incidents in real time. These systems use complex algorithms to analyze surveillance footage, identify
unusual patterns of movement, and alert staff to potential security breaches before they escalate.
For example, AI-driven cameras can distinguish between normal customer behavior and activities that typically precede a theft, such as loitering around high-value items or repeated trips to less monitored parts of a store. By flagging these activities, AI enables staff to respond proactively, potentially deterring theft and ensuring a safer shopping environment.
Effective inventory management is essential not only for business operations but
also for safety and security in retail spaces. Overstocked shelves and improperly stored merchandise pose significant risks, including the potential for accidents and obstructions in emergency situations. AI is streamlining this aspect of retail by automating inventory audits and optimizing stock layouts.
AI systems can track inventory levels in real-time, predict stocking needs based on trends, and even suggest optimal placement of goods to minimize safety hazards. Furthermore, these systems facilitate better inventory accuracy and reduce the need for employees
liquid bleach, would we be right? Ammonia and drain cleaner also appear in many workplaces’ chemical inventories. Certain common cleaning chemicals can irreversibly damage or burn human tissues (skin, eyes, mucous membranes, etc.), even if they’re “consumer-grade”.
In workplace safety terms, these chemicals are classified as Caustics or Corrosives. Consulting a chemical’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) helps make this determination. If it applies, you’ll see the term “Corrosive” listed accompanied by a triangle icon with an acid-spill image, in Section 2 of any SDS. Whether you
have specific janitorial staff, or everyone pitches in on cleaning, employee exposure to Corrosives creates the requirement to have adequate flushing facilities ready for an exposure emergency.
Section 4 of the SDS for any Corrosive chemical requires 10-15 minutes of flushing water to the affected body part. These flushing fixtures are commonly called emergency eyewashes. Single-use saline bottles (commonly a 1 Liter size) do not meet the requirements for adequate first aid.
Of course, the ideal is to substitute for less hazardous chemicals first, and then
to engage in risky tasks, such as climbing ladders to reach high shelves or moving heavy objects, thereby enhancing overall workplace safety.
AI’s role in enhancing workplace safety extends beyond inventory management and theft prevention. It also includes ensuring that the retail environment is safe for both employees and customers. AIpowered tools are used to monitor compliance with safety protocols, such as detecting when an area becomes too crowded or when

emergency exits are blocked.
Moreover, AI technologies can help in accident prevention by identifying potential safety hazards before they cause harm. For instance, floor sensors and AI algorithms can detect spillages or debris that could lead to slips and falls, alerting staff to take immediate action. In more advanced setups, AI-driven robots can be deployed to handle potentially dangerous tasks, reducing the risk of injury to human workers.
assign Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if employees still must use Corrosives. But managers in most industries can agree that the weakness of PPE is getting employees to consistently wear it for irregular tasks. Regardless of your staff’s level of PPE discipline for handling hazardous chemicals, you must have adequate first aid measures ready to deploy.
Nevada OSHA has incorporated ANSI Standard Z358.1 which regulates design, performance, installation, inspection, and training of eyewash stations. Z358.1 allows for plumbed-in or free-standing designs, requires stations to supply an adequate flow of tepid water, assigns that they remain accessible
As the deployment of AI in retail settings expands, it is crucial to address the ethical implications of such technology. Ensuring that AI systems respect privacy and are used responsibly involves transparent data handling, adherence to legal standards, and alignment with consumer expectations. Retailers must navigate these considerations carefully to maintain trust and derive the full benefits of AI in enhancing safety.
AI is setting a new standard in retail safety, offering robust
and inspected, and requires employee training on the hazardous chemicals and flushing procedures.
The agency means business, too. An employer in northern Nevada received an $8,000 penalty when cited for failure to provide an ANSIcompliant eyewash station when employees were using Corrosives. Beside doing right by your employees, it’s just cheaper to install an ANSIcompliant eyewash station if Corrosives are present.

solutions to age-old challenges. By leveraging AI, retailers can not only tackle theft and manage inventory more effectively but also create safer workplaces. As this technology continues to evolve, its potential to transform the retail sector grows, promising not only increased safety and efficiency but also better experiences for customers and staff alike. The ongoing integration of AI into retail safety protocols represents a significant step forward in the industry’s commitment to fostering secure, efficient, and user-friendly environments. ■
underappreciated pillars of public health, especially noted during June’s National Safety Month, which emphasizes the importance of safety across various environments. Community pharmacists enhance public health safety through their comprehensive involvement in medication management, preventive care, and educational initiatives, thereby playing a crucial role in strengthening the community’s health infrastructure. Positioned at the forefront of healthcare access, these professionals do far more than dispense medications; they are integral to the enhancement of public health safety. This includes a broad range of responsibilities from direct patient care to the implementation of preventive services that safeguard entire communities. Their extensive training and unique accessibility make them a first line of defense in the healthcare system, contributing significantly to the prevention of disease and the promotion of health and wellness across populations.
By Liz MacMenaminOne of the primary roles of community pharmacists involves the management of medications. They are often the first point of contact for patients seeking advice on over-the-counter medications and prescriptions. Pharmacists ensure the safe administration of medications by managing drug interactions, monitoring side effects, and confirming dosages. This meticulous oversight is vital in preventing medication errors, which are among the leading causes of injury in health care settings. By offering personalized counsel, pharmacists help patients understand the importance of adhering to

pharmacists excel in providing vital health information to the community. Through daily interactions, they educate patients on the importance of lifestyle changes, medication adherence, and preventive care. This continuous patient education helps build health literacy, empowering individuals to make informed health decisions. High levels of health literacy lead to better health outcomes and more effective management of chronic diseases, reducing the overall strain on the health care system.

their medication regimens, which is crucial for treating chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, thus preventing potential health crises.
Beyond medication management, community pharmacists play a significant role in preventive care. They administer vaccines, which are
health conditions, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, serving as an early warning system for at-risk populations. These screenings can lead to early detection and treatment, significantly lowering the risk of severe health outcomes.
Education is a powerful tool in public health, and
Pharmacists often serve as health care anchors in their communities, particularly in times of crisis. During health emergencies, such as the opioid epidemic or the COVID-19 pandemic, community pharmacists have been front and center, providing necessary guidance on medication use, safety practices, and mental health support. Their local presence and trusted status enable them to disseminate critical information quickly and effectively, ensuring that communities respond appropriately to health crises.
GROCERY STORES PLAY
their traditional function of selling food and household items; they are integral to the structure and safety of the communities they serve. By improving accessibility, fostering economic stability, engaging in community activities, and promoting health and wellness, grocery stores contribute significantly to public safety and community well-being. Each of these roles underscores the importance of grocery establishments not just as commercial entities, but as foundational pillars that enhance the stability and health of the neighborhoods around them.
Grocery stores increase community safety by providing essential food access in a convenient and reliable setting. They ensure that nutritious food options are available to all segments of the community, which is crucial in urban and rural areas alike. In many neighborhoods, especially those in food deserts—areas that lack fresh, affordable food—grocery stores serve as vital sources of sustenance. By fulfilling basic needs close to
home, grocery stores reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for essentials, thus minimizing the risks associated with longer commutes and reducing traffic congestion. This accessibility is particularly important for the elderly, disabled, and those without reliable transportation, ensuring they have regular access to food without compromising their safety.
Grocery stores are significant economic contributors that foster job creation and local economic stability. They employ a large workforce, ranging from entry-level positions to management, providing employment opportunities within the community and thus keeping economic resources localized. This infusion of jobs and capital helps maintain a robust local economy, which is a deterrent against crime and social unrest. Economically stable communities, buoyed by local businesses like grocery stores, are often safer and more cohesive.
Beyond economic contributions, grocery stores often become places of social interaction and community building. They are spaces
where residents meet, communicate, and foster relationships, contributing to a stronger sense of community and belonging. This social infrastructure is a subtle yet powerful tool for community safety. When people are connected and relationships within the community are strong, there is a natural inclination towards looking out for one another, which enhances neighborhood watchfulness and collective care. Furthermore, many grocery stores actively participate in community life by sponsoring local events, supporting food banks, and engaging in local decision-making processes, thereby reinforcing their role as key players in community welfare.
The health impacts of grocery stores are profound and directly influence community safety. By providing access to a diverse range of food products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, grocery stores play a crucial role in combating malnutrition and lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes,
and heart disease. Healthier individuals are capable of leading more active, productive lives, reducing the strain on local healthcare systems and indirectly supporting community stability and safety. Moreover, during public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, grocery stores quickly adapted by implementing safety measures to protect consumers and staff, highlighting their role in safeguarding public health. Grocery stores do much more than sell food; they are pivotal in ensuring that communities remain safe, cohesive, and economically stable. Their role in providing accessible food options, creating jobs, engaging with the community, and promoting health and wellness underscores their importance in a thriving community. Recognizing and supporting these institutions not only in their commercial endeavors but also as integral components of public safety and community well-being is essential. As such, grocery stores are not just retail spaces but are lifelines to the communities they serve, proving that their influence extends well beyond their commercial boundaries into the very heart of community safety and resilience. ■

The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in favor of granting ballot access to a broad “reproductive freedom” ballot question encompassing various reproductive health care procedures. The decision overturned a lower court ruling and affirmed the inclusion of topics like prenatal care, abortions, vasectomies, and infertility care under the umbrella of reproductive rights. The ruling is expected to pave the way for the proposal to appear on the November ballot, although the supporting group plans to focus on a narrower petition specifically targeting abortion rights. The decision is seen as a win for reproductive rights advocates, while opponents express concerns about the precedent it sets for future ballot initiatives. Meanwhile, efforts to strengthen abortion protections are underway both through ballot initiatives and legislative measures in Nevada. Nevada Independent
Clark County Commissioners unanimously approved regulations for street vendors, aligning the county with state law established by Senate Bill
92. Under the ordinance, sidewalk vendors must obtain a license, pay an annual fee, hold a health permit, and maintain liability insurance. They face restrictions on operating near certain events, facilities, and businesses, and are subject to fines and penalties for violations. While some vendors expressed disappointment with the stringent regulations, there is potential for revisiting the ordinance in the future. State Senator Fabian Doñate highlighted concerns about the challenges faced by vendors in obtaining health permits and urged the Southern Nevada Health District to streamline the process. Despite criticisms, the regulations mark a significant shift from the previous prohibition on sidewalk vending in the state.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block Nevada from counting mail ballots received after Election Day, as permitted by state law passed by Democrats in 2021. The lawsuit argues that allowing ballots to be tallied after Election Day violates the U.S. Constitution’s requirement of a single Election Day. This legal action is part of a
broader trend of increased election-related litigation by the Republican Party, reflecting ongoing disputes over election rules and procedures. Supporters of allowing ballots received after Election Day argue that it facilitates easier voting, while opponents raise concerns about delayed results and trust in the electoral process.

WHEN IT COMES TO LEGAL JURISPRUDENCE, few laws carry the exotic allure of Nevada Revised Statutes 202.350. This law, more widely recognized as the “Camel Law,” holds a unique place in Nevada’s colorful legal history. Its origins trace back to the nineteenth century and involve an ambitious federal experiment, a changing American frontier, and a most unusual traveler: the camel.
The Camel Law’s roots lie in an 1855 United States War Department experiment dubbed the “U.S. Camel Corps.” Led by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, the initiative aimed to introduce camels as beasts of burden in America’s arid Southwest. Camels were thought to be well-suited to the desert environment, given their hardy nature and adaptation to similar climates in their native lands.
In response, the War Department imported 75 camels from the Middle East, hoping these resilient creatures would revolutionize transportation across the
vast arid regions of the American West. However, the experiment ultimately proved a failure. The camels, despite their strength and endurance, proved ill-suited to the rugged terrain and were difficult to control. Furthermore, the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 diverted the government’s attention, and the project was abandoned.
The camels, suddenly relieved of their duties, were released into the wild. They soon became a common sight on Nevada’s dusty roads, much to the chagrin of travelers and local residents. The creatures, unfamiliar to most in America, were often a source of fear and confusion, leading to traffic disruptions and occasional accidents.
It was in this context that the Nevada Legislature, in a move to reclaim the public thoroughfares, passed a law making it illegal for camels to tread on public highways. The measure, now known as Nevada Revised Statutes 202.350, was designed to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers.
The Camel Law, while
undoubtedly peculiar by today’s standards, represents an important intersection between the rapid development of the American West and the innovative, albeit unsuccessful, attempts to utilize non-native species in that development. Today, this statute stands as a unique relic of a bygone era, its essence encapsulated in the dry legal language: “It shall be unlawful for any person to drive or conduct any camel or dromedary upon or along any public street, sidewalk or crosswalk within this State.”
While Nevada is unlikely to face a camelrelated traffic problem anytime soon, this law remains in effect, a whimsical footnote in the Silver State’s intriguing legal history. It’s a testament to the diverse and occasionally eccentric challenges that have shaped Nevada’s legislative landscape over the years.
The Camel Law of Nevada, though a product of its time, continues to spark fascination and amusement, a distinctive emblem of the state’s colorful past. ■
