MANAGERS NOTES AMY MCDONALD

Good afternoon and welcome to our game against Forfar Farmington. We have been working hard to prepare for this match against a good Forfar side. They have recently changed manager and with this comes an additional challenge. We recognise that they will be physical, well organised and difficult to break down. We welcome a number of players back for this game from long term injury today. Notably Nicole Pullar, Hayley Sinclair and Chantelle Brown. This has allowed training to be more competitive and will allow us to change our style of play. Amy Muir returns from International duty with the Scotland Under 19s where she was involved in all three games in La Manga finishing with a victory against China. We are now hitting a consistent run of games which means we must be at our best and gain maximum points as well as progression in the SWPL League Cup. We thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy the game.

I’m Loving Life With The Gers Defender Ellis Dalgliesh is loving the positive environment at her new club as she settles into life with the Gers. Dalgliesh, a pre-season signing from city rivals Celtic,

who has excelled in her first two games for the club, is confident the Light Blues can continue their blistering start to the season when they return to SWPL action against Forfar Farmington this afternoon.

The 19-year-old feels that her experience of playing with some of her current teammates at international level has helped her smooth transition into the Rangers side.

Playing wise I knew most of the players from playing internationally so playing behind Amy Muir and Carla Boyce has created problems for the opposition as we have gelled really well”

She feels that after two fantastic results, in which free scoring Gers have put four past both Stirling University in the league and Partick Thistle in SWPL League Cup the squad are getting better and better. She added: “On the back of two good results, I believe that we can go out on Sunday and put a show on. “We are going from strength to strength every training session so I’m confident this will show in our game against Forfar.” The defender, who was previously played for Durham in England’s Super League, is also loving life on the training ground with her new side. She feels: “At Durham I trained for longer but fewer sessions whereas at Rangers the sessions are shorter and we train more frequently”.

MATCH REPORT STIRLING UNIVERSITY 1 RANGERS WFC 4 17 FEB 2018 | OCHILVIEW PARK

RANGERS left Ochilview Park with a resounding 4-1 victory over Stirling University in their opening SWPL game of the season. After going a goal behind early on, goals from Hannah Coackley, Laura McCartney, Carla Boyce and Holly Naiper saw the Light Blues head back down the road with all three points. After a well respected minute silence for Glasgow City’s Kat Linder who tragically passed away last week, the game kicked off in blistery conditions. The Light Blues, wearing their white away kit were on the attack when in the first minute, Clare Gemmell latched on to a loose ball from the Stirling defence only to see her shot from the edge of the penalty box go straight over the cross bar. Stirling almost made the breakthrough without having a shot after a mix up in the Gers defence saw Coakley attempt a back pass that rolled just wide of the empty net. The home side eventually did take the lead in the 13th minute when the Rangers players stopped to claim for a head knock to Lauren Gallon.

I think that we started the game a bit slow, but in the second half we were a lot more attack minded.” Laura McCartney

As the midfielder lay injured, the Stirling players carried on and Stirling’s Jane Callaghan took full advantage by slotting a low shot into the left hand corner. The resulting head knock lead to Gallon being replaced by McCartney. In the 21st minute Rangers hit back. Some superb midfield play by Amy Muir drew a foul from two Stirling players and from the resulting free kick, Gemmell floated a free kick right over the Stirling defence where Coakley nipped in while colliding with the advancing goalkeeper Logan to slide the Gers level. The resulting collision lead to a second enforced change for Rangers, with Coakley leaving the field to be replaced by Terri Donnelly. It took until the 34th minute for the game to spring back into action when Gers striker Boyce fired wide after latching on to a loose ball.

In the final five minutes of the half, the game sprung to life with some end to end action. Stirling first went close with striker Callaghan again going close. Then, up the other end, Rangers won a corner and after an intricate training ground move, Gemmell crossed for Boyce to head just wide of the left hand post. In added time there was more uncertainty in the Light Blues backline resulting in Stirling forward Naomi Welch shot high over the bar to see the teams go into the interval at one apiece. The second half saw the Gers take full control of the match with wave after wave of attack. In the 55th minute it paid off when substitute McCartney got what her hard work deserved, slotting home a Muir cross. The Gers strengthened their hold on the match and Boyce struck in the 66th minute thundering the ball into the top right hand corner of the net giving Chloe Logan in the Stirling goal no chance.

We’re pleased with the performance. I don’t think that we started the game well, in the first thirty or thirty-five minutes, but I think that the conditions maybe had a bit to do with that. “I’m really pleased with the result and that there was four different goal scorers.” Amy McDonald

Stirling almost struck one back in the 78th minute when winger Welch hit a wonder strike only to see it cannon back off the crossbar. In the 90th minute Gers midfielder Napier then capped off a fine display by the Gers and wrapped up all three points with a fantastic curling effort into the bottom right hand corner. RANGERS: Baillie, Dalgleish, L. Gallon, Coakley (Donnelly 21), Inglis (Sinclair 79), Gemmell, O’Hara, Muir, J. Gallon(McCartney 13), Napier, Boyce (Brown 83). SUBS NOT USED: Watson, Ramsay. Gers Launch Modern Apprenticeships

RANGERS this week became the first football club in Scotland to offer Modern Apprenticeships to Rangers Women’s players in partnership with Skills Development Scotland. The initiative will fund up to 16 players from the Women’s team and Girls’ Academy, aged between 16 and 19, and will run for 12 months across the next three years, offering a pathway to professional football for the club’s elite female players. In a first for the game in this country, Rangers players will work towards a SCQF Level 8 qualification in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance alongside their playing commitments. The apprenticeships will ensure players have access to training, coaching and match participation on a similar basis to that offered to their male counterparts employed by Rangers. Rangers Managing Director Stewart Robertson today said: “We are proud to launch this initiative for our Women’s team in partnership with Skills Development Scotland.

“In doing so, it will allow more young footballers to have the opportunity to compete at an elite level whilst representing our club and, importantly, to have access to our excellent facilities and continued education.” Stewart Robertson Rangers WFC manager Amy McDonald said: “This is a very exciting day for the Women’s and Girls’ programme at Rangers.

McDonald continued: “The club has always developed very good young footballers and this initiative will allow us to continue to do that as we continue to improve the programme that we offer to our players. “Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and this is the perfect way for the club to celebrate that, by continuing its commitment to the development of our young footballers.” Rangers FC manager Steven Gerrard said: “I am delighted to support this initiative which will give young Rangers players a wonderful opportunity to develop their skills at an excellent facility and with a great club.

“The launch of modern apprenticeships for players in our Women’s team will encourage young women and girls to get involved in football.” Steven Gerrard National Training Programmes Performance and Operations Manager at SDS, Paul McGuiness said: “Clubs offering contracts to female players and, therefore, opening up the opportunity for women to take up football apprenticeships is a major milestone. “It sends a positive signal to young women that it’s possible to make a career out of playing football in this country. “The apprenticeship has been developed to give apprentice football players skills for life, recognising the limit of a playing career by providing work-based learning and additional skills that will give them the tools to go on into other jobs in demand.” Unlike other Modern Apprenticeships in Scotland, the Achieving Excellence in Sports Modern Apprenticeship allows apprentices to incorporate other learning into their job to achieve qualifications in areas such as Civil Engineering, Hospitality or Sports Management. Modern Apprentices in football make the transition from school to a professional club, with 18 Scottish professional clubs currently offering the apprenticeship to male players, and 202 football apprentices currently in training across the country. Scottish Apprenticeship Week (March 4-8 2019) Information: Scottish Apprenticeship Week is co-ordinated by Skills Development Scotland with events and activities hosted by employers, learning providers and apprentices across the country. This year’s theme is ‘Skills for the Future’, recognising the importance of investing in our workforce. The campaign also showcases apprentices who have chosen work-based learning to develop their careers.

CAPTAIN’S NOTES CLARE GEMMELL

Good afternoon and welcome to our first home match of the season as we welcome today’s visitors Forfar Farmington. Forfar are a team that we found challenging to play against last season despite dominating possession in the games. They are organised and physical, which I am sure we can expect again this week. We need to take the next step this season and use this game as a marker to show our progress in how we can dominate games, not only with possession but through scoring goals and getting results. We will need to match their physicality without losing sight of our own game plan. Enjoy the game,

Cla

MATCH REPORT PARTICK THISTLE 0 RANGERS WFC 4 24 FEB 2018 | PETERSHILL

RANGERS cruised into the quarter finals of the SWPL League Cup with a crushing 0-4 defeat of Partick Thistle at Petershill Park. A blistering first half display saw the Light Blues put four past Thistle with goals from Holly Napier, a double from Carla Boyce and a Chelsie Watson header. Straight from kick off the Light Blues were on the front foot with Carla Boyce finding herself clean through on goal on to see her shot well saved by Nicolle Andrews in the Thistle goal. Then in the fifth minute Rangers took the lead. Amy Muir, in her new advanced role on the right wing, threw in a high cross to the box which was expertly met by Napier to head home from the edge of the six yard box. The Gers were close to adding a second in the eighth minute, when Caitlin O’Hara shot from 30 yards only to see her shot soar over the crossbar. From then on, it was all one way traffic from the away side, with Partick Thistle hardly setting foot in the Rangers half. The team got their reward on 18 minutes when a ball from Claire Gemmell fell kindly to Boyce and she slotted home from just inside the box.

Overall though, I am really delighted with the first half performance. “I was really disappointed with the second half, and I think that’s about mentality and consistency of performance.” Amy McDonald

There was nearly a third in the 22nd minute when Boyce again found herself through on goal only to see the ball cleared off the line by the Thistle defence. On 24 minutes it was three. A short corner saw Ellis Dalgliesh send a cross to penalty spot that was met by a towering header from Rangers centre half Watson. The 27th minute saw Partick finally foray into the Rangers half, with Rebecca Bisland having a shot that trickled wide of the left hand post not troubling Jade Baillie in the Light Blues goal.

Boyce was at it again in the 29th minute, as she darted by three Partick Thistle defenders then squared the ball to Muir who shot low and hard but straight into the arms of Andrews. In the 40th minute Boyce who was giving the home side’s defence a torrid afternoon added her second of the match. Laura McCartney danced past two Thistle defenders on the right wing to send a cross over which Boyce met perfectly to flick past Andrews and all but book the Light Blues place in the quarter finals. A dominant first half display from Rangers, half time 4-0. The second half saw Gers manager Amy MacDonald make one change with Jade Gallon returning to the side replacing McCartney. Thistle started the brighter of the two sides and shortly after the restart substitute Sara Paterson floated a dangerous ball into the Rangers box but unfortunately their were no takers for the home side.

We are glad to get the win and we are glad to get through to the next round, regardless of how we did it. “I thought the first half was alright from us, though this could have been much better. We got the goals in and killed the game off.” Holly Napier

Boyce had the chance of hat-trick on 57 minutes when another fine ball from Muir on the right wing fell to the striker just inside the box but she volleyed high over the crossbar. Muir was at it again in the 63rd minute she beat two Thistle players before releasing a 25 yard drive that was well saved by Andrews. Chantelle Brown replaced Napier in the 72nd minute and almost made an instant impact latching on to a deflected shot by Watson only to see her low drive well saved by Andrews in the Thistle goal. Muir went close again in the 76th minute when her shot was parried and then held by Andrews. The first booking of the match came in the 79th minute when Partick forward Loren Christie scythed down O’Hara in the middle of the Thistle half which saw the Gers midfielder replaced by Hannah Thomson Coakley.

Rangers were still in the hunt for goals and after a minor scuffle involving Brown the Light Blues were awarded a free kick in the 83rd minute which saw Watson shot high over the bar from 30 yards out.
