GENERAL INFORMATION

CURRICULUM: The Summer Session curriculum is designed to prepare students for a junior high and high school curriculum, as well as to provide opportunities for fun and enrichment.

DURATION: Summer Session classes will run June 23 — July 18. We will observe the 4th of July Holiday on Friday, July 4th.

REGISTRATION: To enroll, visit our website, ramonaconvent.org, under Academics: Summer Programs, and submit the online registration form. An initial tuition payment of $250 is required to register. Full payment for all classes is required by Friday, May 23rd. Students will be dropped from classes on May 23rd if summer school tuition is not paid in full.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES: Classes offered are subject to enrollment. We reserve the right to cancel classes for which there are fewer than 10 students. Under-enrolled classes will be canceled by June 2nd.

Refund Policy: Tuition is refundable only if a class is canceled by Ramona.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in Summer School is extremely important since the class time is so limited.

 Please call 626-282-4151 before 9:00 am to report an absence.

 The day a student returns from an absence, she/he must bring a note to the front ofoce explaining the absence.

 Students should discuss absences and make up work with their teachers.

 If a student is in a class that earns academic credit, she/he cannot receive credit in that class if she/he misses more than two days of the class. If a student needs to leave school early, she/he should bring a note to the ofoce before going to class.

CLASS SCHEDULES: Class schedules will be mailed to all students in early June.

CONDUCT:

1. Students are expected to be on time for class and ready to begin work promptly.

2. Students are expected to behave appropriately during class and stay on task.

3. Students may not eat in the classrooms. Only water is allowed in the classrooms.

4. Gum chewing is not permitted.

5. Students may not leave campus between classes. Students are encouraged to visit the English Courtyard and Ofoce Pavilion area between classes.

6. Students cannot wait on campus before 7:30 am since our school ofoce does not open until that time.

7. Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off unless required by the teacher for educational purposes.

DRESS CODE:

During the summer our students enjoy free dress. All clothes (including jeans) should be clean, free of holes or tears, and unfrayed. All shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses should be appropriate in length covering a student’s midriff and back. All shorts, skirts and dresses must be modest length. Hats may not be worn in the classroom. Clothes must be free of logos/references to violence, sex, drugs, or alcohol. Hair should be neatly groomed, out of a student’s eyes, and be a natural hair color throughout. No body piercings are allowed other than in the ears. Students must wear closed-toe shoes on campus, or sandals with a backstrap. Flip flops are not allowed.

Any student who, in the judgment of the summer school director, is not abiding by the above policies may be asked to leave summer school permanently. Any student who drops out of summer school voluntarily or involuntarily will not receive a refund.

RAMONA PEP SQUAD

Ramona’s Pep Squad is designed to elevate school spirit through advanced cheerleading techniques, engaging dances, and spirited cheers. We invite you to join us for an immersive camp experience to enhance their skills and foster team camaraderie. Learn and perfect various cheerleading skills, including jumps, and some stunts. Develop and perform cheers that boost school spirit and support our athletic teams. Participate in exercises which strengthen teamwork, leadership, and communication among squad members. Open to all students interested in enhancing their cheerleading skills and contributing to school spirit. The best part of joining our team is building long-lasting friendships and developing a sense of belonging within the Ramona Convent community. We look forward to welcoming enthusiastic students ready to showcase their talents and contribute to the vibrant spirit of Ramona! Go Tigers!

ALGEBRA I HONORS

This course is intended for a student who has completed an Algebra course in 8th grade but has not been placed into Geometry. Some of the concepts covered are integers, rational numbers, algebraic equations and functions, inequalities, factoring, and polynomials. Graphing will also be an important component and concept covered. Eligibility for this course will be determined by entrance exam scores, previous grades in math, and the score on the Algebra Proficiency Exam. Students who earn at least an 84% in this class may take Geometry Honors in the ninth grade. Students who earn 83% or lower may take regular Geometry in the ninth grade. Students who earn a "C-" or below must take Algebra I in the ninth grade.

ALGEBRA PREP

This Algebra Prep course is designed to strengthen and reinforce the skills students need to succeed in Algebra and all higher level math courses. Students will use the vocabulary of math while performing operations with real numbers, fractions, and decimals. Students will concentrate on order of operations, negative numbers, ratios, exponential expressions, inequalities, algebraic equations, and word problems.

PRE-ALGEBRA

This class covers basic principles and concepts of arithmetic as well as beginning Algebra. Students will gain the confidence, knowledge, and computational accuracy they need to succeed in Algebra and beyond! Many of the same topics found in our Algebra Prep class are covered, but at a level and pace appropriate to 5th and 6th graders.

If you are looking to acquire more vigorous study habits, then this class is for you. Every week you will obtain learning strategies that will allow you to be a more confident student. Students will learn how to be more motivated and set realistic goals. Here is a preview of what students will receive.

SPEAK UP and SPEAK OUT

Summer English for Incoming Freshmen

One of our most popular courses, English Skills for Incoming Freshmen combines a sturdy foundation for writing and reading at Ramona with the opportunity to build sisterhood and get acquainted with Ramona. In this course, we will read one of the freshman summer reading novels, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and we will learn the fundamentals of argumentative (rhetorical) writing that we focus on here at Ramona. In addition to this reading and writing, we will have opportunities for creative writing, grammar practice, and time spent getting to know the culture of our community.

English Skills for Middle School

In this class, we will not only work to boost our core English skills, but we will work to grow our voices and confidence. We will cover some fundamentals, but we’ll also write our own poetry/short stories, read a novel together (Kate DiCamillo’s Raymie Nightingale), and practice collaboration and participation. This course will help middle school students to grow in confidence and prepare for the school year. We can’t wait to have you join us!

Service Leaders: Making an Impact

This class will introduce students to social justice issues and the role of nonprofit organizations, individuals, and communities in addressing them. Through hands-on projects with local organizations like City of Hope: Children’s Cancer Center and Union Station Homeless Services, students will engage directly with causes such as caring for the sick, promoting literacy among younger students, and helping the hungry in our local community. They'll create meaningful items like cards, bookmarks, bracelets, and sandwich bags while learning about leadership, advocacy, and using their voice to make a difference. Students will also explore how they, as individuals and as part of a community, are called to take action for social justice. By the end of the course, students will have developed leadership skills, deepened their understanding of systemic issues, and made a real impact in their communities.

American Sign Language

In this fun and interactive course, students will be introduced to American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture. We will learn the ASL alphabet, basic vocabulary, and essential grammar structures to communicate simple sentences. Through games, activities, and practice with peers, students will develop confidence in signing and understanding ASL. The class also explores the history of ASL and the importance of Deaf culture, fostering respect and inclusivity. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to learn!

CULINARY ARTS AND BAKING

In this course young chefs will be introduced to the basic techniques of preparing both sweet and savory dishes. Students will learn French culinary and baking terms and practices along with kitchen safety and sanitation.

Week 1: We will start with safety and sanitation. Students will prepare sauces, meat dishes, appetizers, salads and more.

Week 2: Cuisine from around the world. Students will learn a variety of foods from Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and the Mediterranean.

Week 3: Basic baking techniques, cookies, cakes, cream puffs, fruit tarts pies and more.

ALLSECTIONS ARECLOSED

Week 4: Decorating techniques for your cakes, pies, and other pastries. Learn the tricks and techniques that will make your creations stand out. Learn about how to create new flavors and designs.

Each student should be mature enough to follow safety procedures. A knowledge of basic math (fractions) is important. If a student has food allergies (such as wheat, sugar, nuts, dairy, etc.), please alert the instructor on the first day of class by sending a note with your student. We will make every reasonable effort to accommodate student allergies.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

Calling all Leaders!!

Do you know what qualities are needed to be a great leader? Do you know what your leadership style is? Do you know how to set SMART goals? Do you have dreams of becoming class president? If you answered yes, then this class is for you!

Student leadership is open to 5th through 8th graders looking to be leaders of the future. During this course, we will explore different types of leadership, and leadership styles. Students will work on goal setting, and ways to reach those goals. Students will explore how to build trust among their peers, as well as to accept constructive feedback from adults. Activities will include, ice breakers, reflection and journaling, group share, public speaking, group action projects, video analysis, and digital marketing!

POETRY

Learn about different types of poetry and write your own! Many poetry anthologies and selections will be gathered and shared. Along with enjoying the tongue ticklers, the author’s message, tone, and purpose for writing poems will be taught and discussed.

This unit includes: A poetry book list, mini posters about what poetry is, mini posters about types of poetry, mentor poem selections, templates for students to write their own poems, creative publishing opportunities and student anthology pages. As a culminating project, students will create a “Poetry Book” of their own work.

RC DANCE CREW

Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary

Students will be learning ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance while incorporating other forms of dance throughout the course. The ballet component of the class will cover ballet technique, while the jazz and contemporary components of the class will cover techniques and concepts in jazz and contemporary dance while applying some techniques from ballet. While working on technique in ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance styles, students will develop rhythm, musicality, coordination, and the ability to dance in a group, as well as confidence in their dance skills and confidence while performing. Students will showcase their new dance skills at the end of the course on Friday, July 18.

DESIGN, WRITE, SNAP: Our Yearbook Adventure

In this dynamic and hands-on course, students will dive into the world of digital art and design while working together to create a collaborative summer school yearbook. In this course students will explore design theory, learn the basics of digital journalism, and practice using design tools to bring their ideas to life. From writing stories and interviewing classmates to capturing photos and mastering typography, every student will contribute to building a final publication that showcases the creativity and spirit of our Ramona community. By the end of the course, students will have gained valuable skills in digital design, storytelling, and teamwork, while creating a memorable keepsake for everyone involved. Get ready to blend creativity and technology in a project that's as fun as it is educational!

MEDIA ARTS

This summer course will allow you to experience four different medias and find your passion! Join an amazing team of artists from the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory and explore the arts with us this summer.

Week 1: Collage Workshop: Through collage making you will explore different themes while layering textures, colors, and imagery. We will tap into your boundless imagination while letting you tell your story visually.

Week 2: Water Color & Acrylic: Experiment with blending, layering, and color theory while learning about different textures and brushwork. We encourage your artistic exploration, self-expression, and creative risk-taking in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Week 3: Digital Drawing: You will explore various software tools and express your creativity through a modern form of art. Focusing on Procreate, a powerful digital art platform, you will learn techniques for illustration, design, and digital painting.

Week 4: Stop Motion Animation: Create your own characters and stories, then bring them to life through animation. Design a set, craft an original script and direct your project. You’ll create your own animated short film!

CREATIVE WRITING

In this course, students will be introduced to expressive writing in many different forms. Students will have the opportunity to explore different types of poetry, as well as respond to literature and art mediums. There will be opportunities for students to create original art to accompany their work such as designing a tracklist, a social media post, and more. Peer reviews and sharing ideas will be an essential element of this course. The course will culminate in a portfolio of the student’s work.

Week 1: About Me. Students will begin expressive writing focused on telling their own stories through various writing forms.

Week 2: Short Stories. Students will define and discuss the elements of plot and conflict. They will create original traditional plot lines and create their own short stories based on different prompts.

Week 3: Poetry. Students will learn and identify different types of poetry. Students will write and workshop their poetry.

Week 4: Portfolio Compilation. Students will work on compiling a writing portfolio. They will refine their rough drafts, using feedback from their peers, to create a final draft to publish in their portfolio.

THE ART OF PLAYING AND GAMING

From the Hunger Games, to Battleship to Ready Player One, games are telling of one’s critical thinking, team-building and collaborative skills. In this class, students will learn about the history of games and strategies of how to play and to win. Students will be learning about and playing board games (like Monopoly and Mancala), card games (Like Uno and Spoons) and playground games (like Red Light, Green Light and Freeze Tag). Whether students are beginners or experts, this class is meant to help empower students to realize their power and to make friends along the way through friendly play. GAME ON!

LIVE STUDIO PRODUCTION

Students will use our new broadcast studio to dive into the essential techniques for setting up and operating a professional video podcasting studio. Learn how to effectively use a green screen for dynamic backgrounds, master a multi-camera setup to capture engaging angles, and seamlessly sync audio with video for a polished final product. This hands-on course will equip you with the skills to produce high-quality, visually compelling content the stands out in a digital landscape. If you have an ipad please bring it to class. We welcome the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory to Ramona’s campus to run this exciting summer class!

GEOMETRY

Satisfies graduation requirement, UC approved, 10 units (full year)

This course covers basic geometric concepts and relationships. An Emphasis is placed on the use of deductive reasoning and the development of proofs, especially as they relate to the study of congruent polygons, parallel lines and circles. Other topics covered are ratio, proportion, similarity, inequalities and right triangles.

*Ramona students require department approval to enroll in this course.

We welcome the Learning Ladder to Ramona’s campus this summer to prep students for the new digital adaptive SAT test. This class will prepare students for both the SAT and PSAT. You will learn, practice and implement effective test taking strategies. You will read and analyze passages specific to literature, historical documents, social sciences and natural sciences. Language Arts will focus on: Information and ideas; Craft and Structure; Expression of Ideas and Standard English. Math will focus on Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Geometry, Trigonometry and the use of DESMOS. You will also be responsible for taking a weekly digital practice exam!

SPEECH and COMMUNICATION

Speech and Communication is a course devoted to the development of public speaking skills and the exploration of communication behaviors. You will be introduced to the idea of deciphering code in body language and verbal expression. Students will read, listen, and speak reflectively and critically, contributing effectively in collaborative situations. Students apply moral and ethical values to decision making while demonstrating personal integrity. Students will express ideas in a variety of contexts with poise, a command of language, a clear organization of ideas, and a sense of appropriateness to audience, purpose, and context.

ARCHERY SKILLS AND GAMES:

Unleash Your Inner Robin Hood!

Prepare to embark on a journey into the world of archery! This program will teach the basics of the bow, as you learn the secrets of Olympic-style archery in a thrilling, safe environment. Each day, you'll conquer a new, heart-pounding archery skill, forging an unshakable foundation that will leave your rivals in awe.

Students will put their skills to the test in games like Exploding Balloons, Mock Tournaments, and Archery Tic Tac Toe!

At Champs Universal, we're not just about hitting the bullseye; we're dedicated to igniting the flames of determination, hard work, and personal growth. Archery is a timeless art, woven into the fabric of every culture and celebrated throughout the ages. VOLLEYBALL

This course is for beginning volleyball players as well as those students that want to improve their current skill set. We will be focusing on basic skills such as serving and passing as well as have some fun recreational games during the time we are together. Come and have fun this summer learning volleyball and meeting new people. All you need is dedication, a good attitude and a desire to learn.

SOFTBALL CAMP

The 2025 Ramona Youth Softball Camp is open to all those interested in playing softball and continuing to build their skillset. The summer program will be led by our Ramona Softball Coaching Staff. The coaching staff will work with students to strengthen their fundamentals and increase their knowledge of the game. Students will work on infield, outfield, pitching, catching, hitting, base running, conditioning and more.
