A Message from the President
Dear Friends,
Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without words And never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson
As we began the school year, I told our community gathered here that “HOPE” is my theme song or mantra for the year…not a groundless optimism…not the hope that is a fragile emotion, but one that is a durable gift grounded in the unchanging goodness of God. With all that is going on in our families, communities, nation, and world, these are not days that hope comes easily. Enumerating all of these could quickly lead to hopelessness and despair. Yet we ask: must times such as these steal our hope?
The answer I propose is a resounding “NO.” We don’t have to be merely victims, nor do we have to be unrealistic; we can be active. We can help create the future. Hope rests not merely in what happened in the past, but what God will do today and in the future.
It is in this spirit that we at Ramona are moving forward in hope. Our students and faculty are all on campus; we have our safety protocols in place; we follow the guidance of the Department of Public Health; and we know that we cannot change last year, nor can we dwell in the sadness and isolation of the pandemic. We have become more aware of the symbols of hope that are all around us: a budding flower, a butterfly just released from the cocoon, a rainbow, a sunrise.
I have been told that in Ireland, the term used for quarantining was “cocooning.” Watching the girls move around campus, listening to their chatter, attending games and pep rallies, prayer services and our recent college fair – all with masks on – remind me of the butterfly. We ARE emerging from last year’s cocoon; just as the butterfly cannot be interfered with or rushed, so, too, our process cannot be rushed. So we will continue to wear masks, to use lots of hand sanitizer, and to maintain an appropriate distance. We will find adventure in each new day and marvel at the wonders of creation which constantly present themselves to us.
Sincerely,

A Message from the Principal
Dear Ramona Convent Alumnae Community,
20th Century author and Nobel Prize in Literature recipient (1913), Rabindranath Tagore, once wrote “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” I pray, as we leave behind the uncertainties of the 2020-2021 school year that we are able to look with hope towards the beauty of the 2021-2022 school year. I find encouragement in our county’s unification in fighting against the coronavirus, and pray that we continue to come together in eradicating this dreadful disease.
This academic year we opened fully for in-person classes and no longer offer a hybrid or remote learning option. Our students have been deprived of their friendships and positive relationships with their teachers for far too long, and it is our goal to move them into a more “normal” school experience. While we know that much will need to be done to continue helping our entire community feel safe on campus, we will work together to support and encourage strong academics, and positive mental health among our student body.
We are fortunate to have hired several incredible staff and educators. One special person we hired is Guidance Counselor, Brandey Herrera, who is also a licensed marriage and family therapist. Ms. Herrera is very excited to take on the challenges of academic guidance for our sophomores, as well as to provide individual and group social-emotional counseling for the students who wish to see her. We are working very hard to make sure that our students who grapple with anxiety, depression, and any other mental health issues are fully supported and loved through their personal growth. Please enjoy reading the biographies of our new faculty and staff. We welcome these talented, passionate, and well-qualified teachers and staff; I have no doubt that after you read all about them, you will want to run out here and meet them - if you haven’t already…as one of our new teachers is an alum from the Class of 2005!
We continue to be grateful that 100% of our faculty and staff is fully vaccinated, as is 86% of our student body! We, at Ramona, have reached “herd immunity!” While we are not requiring this important vaccine, having so many vaccinated individuals has made our classroom and campus experience feel so much safer than many schools in our area.
Speaking of feeling safer, Ramona has instituted new safety protocols on campus. In addition to mask requirements to fight Covid transmission, we also have a wonderful new security guard posted at the Ramona Gate. Fernando Toledo has quickly become a member of the Ramona campus, and takes seriously the protection of all who come here. If you decide to visit us – and we hope you do, Fernando will stop and greet you at the gate.
It has been too long since we have enjoyed the company of one another. I know that I speak for our entire community when I say that the clouds of yesterday, which brought sadness and separation, are drifting now, and the students and their alumnae sisters who color our lives and purpose, return to create the breathtaking sunsets of Ramona Convent…welcome home, tigers. You have been greatly missed.

130th Annual Commencement May 29, 2021
GRADUATION ON CAMPUS and in Rose Heath - what an accomplishment! A mere two years ago we could not have imagined ever making a statement such as this. But thankfully, the Class of 2021 was able to celebrate their commencement ceremony, in front of their families, although in smaller numbers, in the traditional Ramona way.
The address was given by Ramona alumna, Denise Valadez ‘96, Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Orange. Her speech was full of fond memories of her years at Ramona, mentioning some of her former teachers who were in attendance; and sharing thoughtful words of advice for our new graduates. Her mother, Yolanda, was in attendance, clearly very proud of her daughter.
Salutatorian, Lauren Knapp, recalled the uniqueness of the Class of 2021’s years together and apart due to the pandemic, putting emphasis on the resilience and talents of her classmates.
The Baccalaureate Mass, usually held in the gym the evening before commencement, also took place in Rose Heath with a lovely and meaningful liturgy.
The world hasn’t quite returned to normal as our newest alumnae pursue their futures at college but we are confident that they will achieve their dreams and make a significant impact in their communities and beyond. Congratulations Class of 2021!
Yolanda Valadez, Denise Valadez ‘96, and Sr. Kathleen Callaway
At the Fall Honors Assembly on September 15, two seniors, Vanessa Maldonado and Maritza Ramirez, were asked to give brief talks about being a ‘”Ramona Girl” and also welcome our sophomore and freshman classes to Ramona for their first year of in-person learning. We thought it would be a good time to share with you who our current Ramona students are, what communities and countries they represent, and their academic successes.
“A Ramona girl is someone who is imaginative and curious. Be curious. Ask those questions. Burst your academic limits by saying ‘I can’ instead of ‘I can’t.’”
“Throughout my first year at Ramona, I made many new friends in my classes and in the clubs and sports I took part in. These friendships have made my days here at Ramona special and worthwhile.”

IVY LEE
World Languages – American Sign Language
Ivy Lee is not entirely new to Ramona, as she started with us in early 2021 when she formed an ASL club for our students. Through her weekly Zoom club meetings, Ramona girls, as well as students from neighboring elementary schools, learned to sign the alphabet, hundreds of words, and even met special guests that Ms. Lee brought to class. Ms. Lee is profoundly deaf and hard of hearing, but wears a Cochlear implant that enables her to hear and speak with her hearing students and colleagues. She currently teaches at two other schools in addition to Ramona and is part of an after-school program called “No Limits for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.” Ms. Lee helps young people understand character development, cultivate creativity, and develop public speaking skills as they move into the hearing world. While Ms. Lee is a wonderful addition to our Ramona family, we also love her service dog “Pepper!”
MATTHEW MARSHALL
Social Studies – Global Studies and Foundations
in partnership with Catholic Relief Services. His passion and enthusiasm for teaching make his classroom lively and engaging. Mr. Marshall is married to Rene, a Social Worker with Los Angeles County, has three lovely daughters, two of which (twins Eloise and Evelyn) are part of the Ramona Class of 2025! There is no doubt that he will be a worthy addition to the Ramona faculty for years to come! Welcome Mr. Marshall and family!
Mr. Marshall has been a dedicated Catholic School teacher for more than 15 years. During that time, he has taught just about everything that social science has to offer: US History, World History, Economics, American Government, Psychology, Anthropology, as well as several Advanced Placement courses. At his previous job, he served as Social Science Department Chair and worked extensively across disciplines to foster academic coordination. Mr. Marshall also served as a technology trainer for his colleagues and brought an international development program to campus
Mary Perez has taught in the Catholic schools for over 35 years. In 1982, she began her teaching career at Our Lady of Soledad in East Los Angeles, and continued working in Los Angeles and Orange County for the next 17 years. In the late 90’s, Mrs. Perez started a graduate program in Counseling and Psychology, and after receiving her Master’s in Counseling and Psychology she worked in private practice and elementary schools. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She earned her second Master’s in Theology, and after eight-years as school counselor, Mary retired in 2016. Mary began teaching part-time Theology in 2017, and eventually became full-time Department Chair at Cornelia Connelly School, an all-girls’ Catholic High School in Anaheim. When Connelly closed in June 2020, Mrs. Perez was convinced she would retire. It was not to be; she has come out of retirement to be Ramona’s International Student Liaison. She has worked as a college professor at Whittier College, and has taught social workers about immigration trauma. She enjoys traveling with her husband, Louie Perez, guitarist, singer and original member of the band Los Lobos who got their start in East Los Angeles where he and Mary met in high school (he attended Cantwell and she attended Sacred Heart of Mary). Mrs. Perez is a proud wife and mother to three sons. Ramona welcomes Mrs. Perez!
FLORENCIA TERAN
Staff - International Program Development Coordinator
For the past 35 years, Florencia Teran has worked as an elementary school teacher and administrator in Los Angeles Archdiocesan schools serving the communities of East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, and Santa Monica. Most recently, Ms. Teran served as the Humanities teacher for grades 5 through 8, and assistant principal at Our Lady of Guadalupe School. Ms. Teran joined Ramona Convent in the summer of 2021 as the International Program Development Coordinator focusing on recruitment and programming for students coming from Mexico and Latin America. Ramona is blessed to have Ms. Teran on staff!
NELSON FERNANDO ZELAYA TOLEDO Security Guard
Known on-campus as “Fernando," he was born in El Salvador and is the youngest of four - and the only boy! Fernando is proud of his three older sisters, which certainly helps him to respectfully handle his role on Ramona’s campus. Fernando has been in the United States for seven years. He speaks highly of his mother, a retired judge in El Salvador and states that she is the strength of the family as his father was killed when he was only six-years old. He loves being at Ramona, loves to stay busy and work hard. In the future, he hopes to be a LAUSD police officer with the LAPD. We are glad to have him protecting our community at the Ramona Road gate. Welcome to the Ramona family, Fernando!
Twentieth Anniversary of 9/11 Prayer Service
On Friday, September 10, faculty and staff gathered to remember, and our students to learn more, about September 11, 2001. The prayer service began with:
“Good morning everyone,
On September 11, 2001, our nation suffered devastating acts of terrorism and violence that resulted in the loss of 2,977 innocent lives and over 6,000 injuries in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Today we come together as people of faith, hope, and love to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
We remember all who died and the families who loved them.
We proclaim that love is stronger than hate.”
October Means Rose Week
AT THE START of every October, Ramona students celebrate Rose Week in honor of Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher, the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
The week is full of activities and a liturgy that includes special devotions to her is held on Wednesday. Each year, the Blessed Marie-Rose Award is presented to a Junior or Senior who exemplifies the virtues of Blessed Marie-Rose and the Core values of the Sisters of the Holy Names, especially dedication to justice, dedication to women and children, and service to the poor and marginalized. Students and faculty were invited to nominate candidates for the award, and the committee poured over them to determine this year's recipient. It is never an easy choice! The awardee was senior, Dominique Ruedaflores, an active member of the Peace and Justice Society and this year's President. She has volunteered tutoring younger children in person and online, prepared food for the homeless, helped produce educational materials and videos for our school community, and been the student speaker at various donor events.
Another special treat for the students was the tours of the four museums in Founder’s Hall. Over twenty years ago, museums were created on the second floor of what was previously the convent. Each museum has a theme: academics, activities, religious, and students (yearbooks, graduation dresses and class banners). The girls were invited to visit during lunchtime and after school and those who participated were given a Ramona Tower pin. (The girls just love their pins!)
Of course, the favorite museum was the one with the graduation dresses. The students were in awe of the variety of fabrics and styles, each dress representative of a bygone era of design and practicality. The religious-themed museum is home to a mannequin dressed in the full habit of the Sisters of the Holy Names. After their initial surprise at seeing it, many of the students took “selfies.” Certainly a sign of the times we live in!
It is important to make, and continue to make, the museums accessible to our students. One of them shared that it was “very comforting to know about Ramona’s past.” Another commented that “no matter where you go in this school, there are always more stairs.” Speaking from the perspective of a Ramona alumna (me), “Too many stairs? Girls, you should have been here in the ‘70’s!”

Sister Kathleen Callaway Receives Cesar Chavez Legacy Award
We are pleased to announce that our very own Sister Kathleen Callaway was one the recipients of the 2021 Cesar Chavez Legacy Award. She, along with musician Jose Hernandez, lawyer Jose R. Padilla, and Senator Raul Grijalva, were recognized in a virtual awards ceremony on September 23.
The event brings together national and local leaders from every sector of business, government, labor, and education to remember the life and work of Cesar Chavez and honors distinguished individuals for their commitment to social justice and their positive contributions to their respective fields. The awards are presented to individuals who exemplify excellence and commitment to community and advocacy.
As a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, Sister Kathleen is committed to the core values of the Order. Two of these core values, Dedication to Justice and Full Development of the Human Person, take on particular significance in light of the Cesar Chavez Legacy Award. She is an advocate for the right to quality education, especially for young women. She supports and participates in the Ramona Social Justice program, projects, and service opportunities.
Sister Kathleen was Principal of Ramona’s Junior School from 1967 – 1973, then Dean of Students from 1973 - 1978. She also served as Dean of Students at Holy Names High School in Oakland from 1978 – 1987. She was Principal at St. Anthony’s Elementary School in San Gabriel from the fall of 1987 – 2000. She returned to Ramona as our first President in 2000.
Cesar Chavez inspired others to lead a life of service. Sister Kathleen has certainly done this in her many years of educational ministry. Congratulations Sister Kathleen! We are grateful and proud.

SNJM General Chapter Meeting Discerns Call to Action
IN JULY, the Sisters of the Holy Names held their General Chapter meeting, an event that occurs once every five years. The delegates generally meet in person in a location near our Congregational Headquarters in Longueil near Montreal. Like most everything this past year, our delegates met via zoom, and all of us were able to listen to two of the major addresses as well as the opening and closing rituals. The Chapter was a year in preparation with monthly zoom calls in which Sisters, affiliates, and ministry partners prayed together and discerned The Call of Our Lives for our times.
Not surprising were:
concerns about the Earth our common home
concerns about those who are suffering isolation, exclusion and racism world-wide
concerns about economic inequalities and injustice
It was difficult to pack a year’s worth of meetings, as well as the two intense weeks of the Chapter, into a short summary. Our SNJM charism, gift of the Spirit, and legacy of Marie-Rose Durocher, impels us to act from our strength and vulnerability.
At every stage of our life, rooted in prayer and believing in the power of presence, we commit ourselves to:
Adopt new world views, attitudes, and ways of being through encounters with a diversity of peoples, cultures, faith traditions and collaborators in mission
Deepen our consciousness of and capacity to live our oneness and interdependence with the whole Earth community
Be a catalyst in creating new forms of community and partnerships that embrace integral ecology as a way of life
Call ourselves to personal and communal transformation that impels us to collaborate with others in being a prophetic witness in religious life, in the Church and in our world today.
As Sisters and Affiliates, in collaboration with our Partners, we will walk together to bring the Chapter Acts to life in the various areas where we live and work.
Letter from the President
The mission of Ramona is to graduate young women who are resilient, socially conscious and prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century global society. Many would say that this is an ambitious statement – and we agree. It takes our entire school community to help us meet this challenge: Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, parents and the students themselves. Our faculty and staff are organized, welcoming, and deeply committed to our mission. Our students are engaged, prepared and excited about all the opportunities offered to them through our extensive curricular and co-curricular programs. Our wider community is loyal and generous. We are grateful to each and every benefactor without whose support our successes and accomplishments would not be possible.
Thanks to your support we were able to purchase additional equipment to enable us to offer our students the best possible e-learning experience during the long months of distance classes. Our 90-year old swimming pool underwent extensive repairs; the English classrooms (formerly the junior school) and the Junior Living Room were outfitted with state of the art silent air conditioners; new blackout curtains have been installed in the Holy Family Room and in several classrooms. In addition to all their other classes, students now have the option of taking ASL (American Sign Language) as their language requirement for graduation and for college entrance.
Critical to maintaining our enrollment is the ability to offer tuition assistance to qualified young women whose parents lack the financial resources to pay the full tuition. Thanks to foundations, friends and alumnae, 67% of our students are living their dream of being Ramona Tigers. Our second annual Strawberry Day of Giving raised twice as much money as last year. The number of donors to this event also increased by 28%.
We count on your continued support as we meet the present needs of our students and plan for the future. We faced the challenges of remote learning and virtual events, learned new skills which we will continue to use, and our school year is off to a great start.
Again, thank you and God bless you and your families!
Gratefully,
Sister Kathleen Callaway, SNJM President
Letter from the Board Chair
Ramona. For Life. That statement has resonated with me since I first heard it. It starts with the vision of Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher, the core values of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and continues with the dedication of the faculty and staff. Through the leadership of our President, Sister Kathleen Callaway and our Principal, Jacqueline QuiÒones Sienkowski, JD, our students receive the highest quality education. They become leaders, they are resilient, they strive for the impossible and make it possible. In addition, they provide service to the community and are actively involved in relevant social justice issues. We are immensely proud of the achievements of our students. It is through these actions that the students develop the relationships with their classmates that transform into a sisterhood. A bond that can last for decades.
The faculty and staff went above and beyond to ensure that the students continued to receive the dynamic education offered at Ramona. Sister Kathleen and Mrs. Sienkowski’s communication with the parents and families kept them involved with their daughter's education. Now that the students are back at school, the faculty and staff have done an incredible job of providing a safe environment.
The pandemic also impacted the need for tuition assistance with the percentage of assistance increasing during the last year. We are thankful for the generous gifts from our donors. These young women will benefit from a Ramona education that provides an extraordinarily solid foundation. These donations provide the starting point for many young women as they begin their journey of education, growth, and empowerment. As a proud member of the Class of 1979, I encourage the alums to give back, to remember the strong bonds of sisterhood that exist among us. To provide an opportunity for a young woman to have the experiences that we did as students. Ramona. For Life.
Sincerely,
Patty Lepe Smith ‘79

In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contributed goods or “in-kind gifts” to Ramona throughout the year. Many in-kind gifts are given in support of La FÍte, our annual auction dinner-dance. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have made in-kind gifts and services to Ramona during the 2020-2021 school year.
Almost everyone is familiar with Giving Tuesday in November that inspires people to give back both locally and globally. In May of 2020, we launched our own Ramona-themed Strawberry Day of Giving. Strawberry Day on May 11 has special meaning for the California SNJM schools because it marks the day the Sisters of the Holy Names arrived by boat in Oakland to further their mission of education in California.
Strawberry Day of Giving 2020 was well-received with alumnae and friends stepping up to support Ramona. The donations brought in for Strawberry Day of Giving 2021 were double the amount raised in 2020. Thank you!
To create more interest and some fun competition between graduation classes, we initiated a contest pitting decades against each other. The prize? A pizza party for our students! The decade of the ‘70’s partnered with the Class of 2024 and won with the most donations. This year’s sophomore class enjoyed pizza and strawberry ice cream in Rose Heath!
As at most Catholic Schools, the tuition at Ramona is less than the actual cost to educate our students. Through donations from alumnae, past parents and other friends of the school, we are able to keep our tuition as reasonable as possible to continue our commitment to making a Ramona education accessible to those families who share our vision and values. This generosity means every Ramona family receives a form of tuition assistance, even those who pay full tuition.
In the 2020-2021 school year, tuition covered only 80% of the actual cost of educating our students. Our parent’s participation in the annual Parent Pledge program and other school fundraising activities is required to help us offset the difference. 100% parent participation each year helps enable us to obtain additional funding from foundations.
We would like to thank our parents who, through their support of the Parent Pledge program, help further our mission of providing a quality education to our young women. REVENUE
$3,285,857
Memorial gifts in the name of a loved one are a meaningful way to pay tribute to a deceased family member or friend or to celebrate a special occasion such as an anniversary, birth, graduation, or retirement. All departed members of our extended Ramona family are remembered in our prayers.

Remembering with Gratitude and Love
Last year we came together VIRTUALLY as a community to cherish the memory of our loved ones. It proved meaningful and cathartic for many of us. We will be making this a yearly virtual event so that those who do not live in the area can also participate.
Sunday, November 7, 2021
2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
We will be creating a photo slide show of those you wish to remember that will be included in the prayer service. As part of the prayer service, we will have the opportunity to share a favorite memory of our loved ones. A Zoom link will be sent when you register and also one hour before the service.

Class reunions are as diverse as the classes themselves! Many classes celebrate at a private home or local restaurant the weekend of Ramona's annual Alumnae Weekend celebration which is held the first weekend in March. Whatever your class chooses to do, it's a great way to reconnect with old friends!
If you need to stick to a budget or just want to take a walk down memory lane, consider having your reunion here at Ramona. The Holy Family Room, Junior Living Room, Pavilion/Fountain area or tent can accommodate different size groups. You will not have the time constraints or expense that renting a banquet room does. Some classes have celebrated by having a family picnic in Rose Heath.
In today’s busy world, it’s difficult to find the time to organize a reunion. We recommend using the Homecoming Mass and Luncheon as your reunion celebration day. Individual classes are seated together so you can just sit back and enjoy each other’s company! Organizing your reunion is the responsibility of the class itself. The Alumnae Office provides information, answers questions, makes catering recommendations, and happily connects you with other alumnae who have recently organized their own reunions.
This is how we can help your reunion be a successful one:
Provide the class list for your invitation outreach.
Advertise the date in Ramona Magazine, the alumnae e-newsletter, and on our website.
If you are having your reunion here on campus, we will do the room set-up and arrange for access to the campus.

The Class of 2011 Celebrates 10 Years
As a Ramona girl with a ton of school spirit, from the moment we graduated I couldn’t wait for our ten year reunion. The ten years that have passed dissipated into nothing when we came back together on our beautiful campus where it all started. Of our graduating class, 24 Ramona women attended, along with some faculty members, for an incredible and memorable night. It was such a pleasure and my heart was, and still is, so full having been able to reconnect with my classmates. I felt so happy and proud to know such amazing women and see where everyone is at this stage in their lives. Also, being able to party on campus was definitely a highlight! I am extremely grateful I was able to attend Ramona, I would do it all again and not change a thing.

RAMONA ALUMNA Stephanie Mercado ‘00 is a multidisciplinary artist and art administrator. Her work is influenced by her life growing up as a working-class Angeleno. Born and raised in Boyle Heights in a family of artisans, Stephanie grew up spending time in her mother’s fabric store, her grandfather’s upholstery business, surrounded by seamstresses and creative workers. Her experience growing up around tradespeople introduced her to the tools, craft and strong work ethic that is necessary to survive in Los Angeles. Her creative practice is a combination of trades and media, including painting, printmaking, fabric sculpture, video and design.
She is also an art administrator, passionate about empowering people to explore their creative potential and increasing access to art education and cultural experiences . She believes art and culture have the ability to teach people to design one’s life and help one manifest their goals and dreams through the power of imagination and creative thinking. As an art administrator Stephanie has managed an art gallery working with hundreds of artists, designers, curators and scholars. She has worked in the film industry as a costume-maker and as an archives and production assistant. Stephanie has also worked in development to help increase access to art education to the communities of East Los Angeles.
“Art
cultivates imagination and empowers people to envision and design their lives.”
~Stephanie Mercado ‘00

Her work can be found in the permanent collection of Metro Arts LA, the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas, Tamarind Institute of Lithography’s archives at the University of New Mexico, and the Zuckerman Museum of Art, Kennesaw, Georgia.
Stephanie currently has a series of portraits on display at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Entitled Sustain: From Loss to Renewal, the series consists of seven images that pay tribute to LA’s diverse workforce. The collection highlights the ways in which community sustains us during crises and is essential to creating a more just and humane society.

Have you put off creating your will because it seems too overwhelming? It may be easier and less time-consuming than you think. In just a one hour meeting with an estate planning attorney - along with some preparation - you can be well on your way to having a legally sound will.
First, contact an estate planning attorney. These legal specialists are experts in will planning. They understand how your decisions affect your estate and can guide you toward a path that will best meet your goals.
From Start to Finish
Here’s how you and your attorney will progress from nothing to something in just one hour.
What
Are Your Goals?
In the beginning, expect to answer a lot of questions regarding your goals for your estate. For example: How do you want to provide for minor children? Do you want to give back to your community? If you are single, who do you want to include in your estate plans?
Assets and Liabilities
Discussing your assets and liabilities, as well as how they are titled, will help your attorney determine whether your current situation aligns with your estate goals.
Additional Considerations
If you have children, you’ll discuss guardianship for minor children, an executor for your estate, medical considerations and other important issues. Even if you are single, you will want to decide on an executor for your estate, someone to also take care of your medical decisions, and other important issues.
Next Steps
Assuming the meeting goes as planned, at this point your attorney should have a good feel for your estate and be ready to draft your will. Once a draft is complete and agreed upon, you’ll meet again to execute the will.*
Did You Know?
You can support Ramona Convent Secondary School beyond your lifetime by adding just a few lines to your will. Contact Yulanda N. Davis-Quarrie, at ydavis-quarrie@ramonaconvent.org or at 626-282-4151 ext. 113 to get official language to share with your attorney.
*More complex estates or living trusts may require additional meetings and documentation
Find the Right Estate Planning Attorney
Start by soliciting references from friends, relatives and co-workers. Talk to bankers, life insurance agents, accountants and financial planners. Your local bar association may have an online referral service. As you move forward, consider:
• Experience and references
• How fees are charged along with total cost estimate
