Leveling the Playing Field:

Advocating for Women in Science & Research

Today Mediplanet launches their Women in Research campaign, aimed at addressing gender disparities in the U.S. research workforce. Making up 30% of the research workforce, women continue to face systemic challenges, including gender bias, lack of mentorship, and unequal access to funding. This campaign seeks to advocate for policies that promote gender equality, ensuring women have the same opportunities to lead, innovate, and contribute to scientific advancements.

Bridging the Gender Gap in Research

While women have made significant strides in research, persistent obstacles prevent them from advancing in their fields at the same rate as their male counterparts. The Women in Research campaign will work to:

• Advocate for Institutional Policies that promote equal opportunities for women in research.

• Expand Advocacy for Mentorship and Funding Opportunities to help women advance in their academic and professional journeys.

• Highlight the Contributions of Women in Science and Research to inspire future generations and drive systemic change.

To explore the digital version of the campaign, visit: https://www.educationandcareernews.com/ campaign/women-in-research/. This campaign was made possible with the support of UN Women, Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), Women in Research (WIRe), Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR), Association for Women in Science (AWIS), American Institutes for Research (AIR), American Association of University Women (AAUW), IEEE Women in Engineering, National Center for Women in IT (NCWIT) and Dr. HadiyahNicole Green.

Copies of the print component will be available at NCUR 2025 (April 7-9), IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (May15-16) and ACRP 2025 (April 24th-27th).

Meeting the Industry’s Growing Demand for Talent

With the financial planning profession facing a talent shortage,

programs like The Externship are more critical than ever. According to research from both Cerulli and McKinsey & Company, the profession must expand its talent pipeline to meet the growing demand for financial planners — and our new professionals’ demand for training. The Externship offers a clear pathway for aspiring professionals, including a significant percentage of career changers, who made up over 40% of last year’s Externship participants.

“We often hear about a shortage of

Money doesn’t just live in our wallets. It lives in our relationships, our health, in the food we eat, in how we spend our time… It determines how many options we have. It can be a constant source of stress or it can give us the freedom to live life on our own terms.

Most people carry their financial challenges in solitude. It wasn’t spoken of in their home growing up and they don’t talk about it now. Don’t worry. I won’t pressure you to break your silence. Instead, I come bearing a safe, anonymous space for you to share your concerns freely and receive compassionate, expert financial guidance. This is a place where judgment has no home, and your struggles are met with empathy, understanding and actionable solutions.

financial advisors, but the real challenge is providing the proper training to set them up for success, which ultimately leads to much higher retention,” said Hannah Moore, CFP®, Founder of Amplified Planning and President of Guiding Wealth. “The Externship removes barriers to entry, provides meaningful hands-on experience, and creates structured pathways into the profession. It’s about equipping the next generation of financial planners with the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed.”

rebuild when I’m this far behind?

A: You are not starting from zero. You are starting from experience. The past may have left you bruised, but it did not take away your ability to rebuild. Assess your debts, pull your credit report, and create a stability-first money plan. Financial independence is a muscle, and you are strengthening it now. Find community, seek financial coaching, and give yourself grace. This is not a setback—it’s a reclamation.

Q: Caring for my aging parent has drained my finances. I’ve cut my hours at work, my savings are dwindling, and I’m terrified for my own future. How do I support them without sacrificing my own financial well-being?

A: Your love and dedication are clear. ♥ Your security matters too. Have you checked Medicaid, caregiver stipends, and local nonprofits? If you left a job or reduced hours, check if you qualify for caregiver compensation through state programs. If family members can contribute, have that

conversation now. Your future is just as important as theirs. Planning for it doesn’t make you selfish—it makes you wise. Join caregiver groups for more ideas.

Q: I’m 60, living paycheck to paycheck, and have no retirement savings. I should have started years ago, but I didn’t. Now, I feel hopeless. What can I do?

A: Your next step matters more than your last. Start with what you do have—income, skills, and expenses. Delay retirement if possible to maximize Social Security. Consider a side hustle or part-time work with 401(k) matching. Cut expenses, save every extra dollar, and explore downsizing. Your financial story isn’t over—you still hold the pen.

Remember that financial wellness is a journey, not a destination. The goal is really just to be 1% better today than you were yesterday. You’re not alone in this journey—reach out, let us know what’s keeping you up at night. We’re here to support you.

Downtown Frederick Partnership Showcases Growth and Announces Future Plans

Downtown Frederick Partnership is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, thriving downtown that serves as the heart of the Frederick community. As a nationally recognized Main Street organization, the Partnership works year-round to support local businesses, enhance public spaces and create engaging events that bring people together. Through strategic initiatives in business development, design, events and community engagement, the Partnership ensures that Downtown Frederick remains a dynamic place to live, work and visit.

Downtown Frederick Partnership is pleased to share key accomplishments and announce upcoming initiatives that will further enhance the vitality of Downtown Frederick. The following updates were presented to the City Council on March 20, 2025.

Business Development

The Business Development Committee provides Downtown Frederick’s new and existing businesses with the incentives, tools and resources they need to thrive. The committee focuses on creating a supportive environment for the entrepreneurs and innovators that drive the downtown economy. Highlights from the past year and upcoming projects include:

Retail Incubator: In February 2025, the Partnership was one of 88 Main Street organizations nationwide—and the only one in Maryland—invited to apply for a $100,000 Hartford Small Business Accelerator Grant. If awarded, the Partnership plans to use the funds to launch a Retail Incubator that will support diverse entrepreneurs by providing a shared retail space, business training and mentorship. If the project moves forward, applications to participate in the incubator are expected to open later this year.

Mission: Interior Grant Program: Supported by funds from the State of Maryland’s Community Legacy program, Mission: Interior provides capital support for downtown businesses to improve the interior of their historic spaces. To date, more than $186,000 has been awarded through the program. The 2025 application is open now through April 9, with a new rolling application process launching in FY26 to provide up to $1,000 in funding for new downtown businesses.

Business Training & City Visit: The annual City Visit took local business owners to Annapolis to explore parking redevelopment. In 2025, the visit will focus on Downtown Harrisonburg, VA, studying accessibility, events, and marketing strategies. Additionally, the Partnership introduced micro-trainings on key topics, including the Youth Apprenticeship Program, Google Business Profile setup and customer engagement with ASL users.

2024 Business Performance Survey: The Partnership’s 13th annual survey captured insights into downtown businesses’ financial health, economic outlook, and challenges. Key findings from the 93 responding businesses include:

47% of businesses reported profits as “much better” or “slightly better” in 2024 (up from 42% in 2023).

The most valued Partnership services were ranked as communication of city news (90%), downtown marketing (80%),

and streetscape improvements (65%).

The top challenges for 2025 include rising costs, foot traffic, and employee retention.

The Partnership is taking these challenges into account as it plans initiatives to support downtown businesses in the months ahead. The full report can be found here: downtownfrederick.org/ wp-content/uploads/2024-BusinessPerformance-Survey-Report.pdf

Design & Infrastructure

The Design Committee works with numerous community partners to address key planning issues that set Downtown Frederick apart. Key projects include: Downtown Ambassador Program: Since 2021, this initiative, with support from the City of Frederick and other funders, has significantly contributed to Downtown Frederick’s cleanliness and hospitality. Ambassadors are fulltime paid employees who work 5 days a week. In the past year, they have cleaned 11,758 block faces as well as 4,779 public infrastructure items, and collected 1,660 bags of trash.

Bring A Broom Saturday: This annual volunteer cleanup event mobilizes 350400 volunteers to clean and beautify downtown. The 2025 event is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 – register to help at bringabroom2025.eventbrite.com

Downtown Streetscape Improvements: The Partnership submitted its first-ever $2 million Congressionally Directed Spending request to support future streetscape upgrades. Andre Agudelo Expands Her Creative Vision with SER: Hats That Transform Identity into Art

\The debut of SER marks a new creative chapter for Andre Agudelo, solidifying her vision as a designer who merges art and fashion with the launch of her first hat collection: Born From Light.

This aesthetic universe is deeply influenced by life’s dualities, embracing the free expression of the self—a testament to the beauty of contrasts, a continuous dialogue between chaos and calm, a living manifesto of evolution, authenticity, and creativity.

With SER, the boundaries between art and fashion dissolve, giving rise to statement pieces born from self-discovery and transformation. Each hat is more than an accessory; it is a personal talisman, allowing individuals to express their essence through what

they wear on their heads.

At its launch event in Colombia, the brand will present a gallery experience, featuring immersive installations that unveil the creative journey behind SER, showcasing the fragments that shaped its story. Suspended in time, the process itself becomes an exhibition.

Each hat is a unique expression, handcrafted by emerging creatives. From artists, for artists, these timeless pieces hold deep meaning. Produced in small batches, SER avoids overproduction and promotes mindful consumption.

Sustainability is at the core of our vision, embedded in handcrafted techniques, natural materials, and

eco-friendly dyes sourced from local partners across Latin America. This ensures the highest quality while minimizing environmental impact.

For Andre Agudelo, hats have been a part of her life since childhood, leaving a legacy that now comes to life. Though the brand has been in development for over four years, its roots trace back much further.

“SER is more than a brand; it is a movement where art, fashion, and music converge to create a unique experience. Our goal is to establish a strong presence in the Latin market through vibrant participation in music and art festivals, where our designs merge with the creativity and energy of these spaces. With our traveling galleries, we will bring the essence of SER

to different countries, connecting with creatives and visionaries who share our philosophy of authenticity and experimentation. Through our Hat Atelier, we aim to offer experiences that go beyond customization— allowing each person to connect with their own story as a reflection of their authenticity. It is a language of its own, a statement of the self.” – Andre Agudelo, Creative Director

SER is a tribute to those who see fashion as art, to those who understand that every piece they wear is an extension of their identity, and to those who appreciate history and craftsmanship as tools for personal exploration.

The Dermatologists of Tomorrow Scholarship presented by Clinique and SOCSF provides financial support and mentorship to medical students who are committed to achieving health equity in their pursuit of a career in dermatology.

Through the Dermatologists of Tomorrow Scholarship, Clinique and SOCSF jointly focus on supporting students and their educational endeavors by structuring a program to reduce the financial burden of applying for dermatology residency. The multi-year commitment will allow Clinique and SOCS to foster mentorship and networking within the SOCS community via continued connection with program alumni.

Fundraising & Community Support: Downtown Frederick Partnership is celebrating its 35th year in 2025. The organization has continued to evolve and grow over the years – establishing beloved local events, providing critical support to our small businesses, and so much more. None of this would have been possible without the community’s support. In FY24, more than 50% ($644,000) of the Partnership’s operating budget came from fundraising and grants, and more than 3,000 hours of volunteer service were provided to support the Partnership’s work.

Marketing & Events

The Partnership continues to promote Downtown Frederick as a premier destination through strategic marketing and engaging events. To this end, the Promotion Committee spends hundreds of hours organizing and executing events like First Saturday, Alive @ Five and Frosty Friday that make Downtown Frederick a vibrant destination and a fun place to live.

Marketing Investment: To promote Downtown Frederick as a thriving Main Street district with unique shopping, dining and experiences, the Partnership implements a robust marketing campaign by committing more than $115,000 annually to advertising and promotional efforts.

Events: The Partnership organizes over 60 events annually, including monthly First Saturdays and Artwalks that showcase local shops, restaurants, galleries and small businesses, while seasonal events like Halloween in Downtown Frederick (October 25), Fall Fest (September 26–28), Frederick @ Night (November 7), Frosty Friday (November 28), and the Love Local Tour (December) create festive community experiences. Alive @ Five (kicks off May 8 this year) provides a stage for a diverse lineup of musicians all summer long and Bites & Bevs (March 2026) highlights the city’s vibrant food and beverage scene. Unique experiences like the Lawn Party at the High Wheel (July 12) and Uptown Salsa Night (October) offer memorable moments, while the annual Fire in Ice event (February 6 – 7, 2026) draws over 25,000 visitors each February, making it one of Downtown Frederick’s most anticipated traditions.

Frederick Gift Card Program: Since its inception in 2006, the Downtown Frederick Gift Card program has generated nearly $3 million in spending at downtown businesses. More than 200 businesses accept the card this fiscal year, and more than $250,000 worth of gift cards have been sold.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress made over the past year and look forward to another year of collaboration, business support, and community growth,” said Kara Norman, Executive Director of Downtown Frederick Partnership. “With strong backing from local businesses, government, residents, and stakeholders, Downtown Frederick will continue to thrive as a vibrant destination.”
