ASK YOUR MONEY COACH

Money doesn’t just live in our wallets. It lives in our relationships, our health, in the food we eat, in how we spend our time… It determines how many options we have. It can be a constant source of stress or it can give us the freedom to live life on our own terms.

Most people carry their financial challenges in solitude. It wasn’t spoken of in their home growing up and they don’t talk about it now. Don’t worry. I won’t pressure you to break your silence. Instead, I come bearing a safe, anonymous space for you to share your concerns freely and receive compassionate, expert financial guidance. This is a place where judgment has no home, and your struggles are met with empathy, understanding and actionable solutions.

Q: I’ve tried to get out of debt so many times, but I always end up back where I started. What am I doing wrong?

A: You’re not alone in this! Many people focus so hard on paying off debt that they forget to address the habits that got them there. It’s like trying to empty a sinking boat without plugging the holes first. Start by looking at where your money leaks are—subscriptions you don’t use, making extra debt payments without a monthly cash flow surplus, etc. Then, focus on creating a plan that doesn’t just eliminate debt but changes your relationship with money. It’s not just about paying it off—it’s about staying out of debt for good!

Q: I feel like I make decent money, but by the end of the month, I’m always broke. Where does it all go, and how can I stop this from happening?

A: One of the most common things I hear from clients is, “I make too much money to be this broke!” Many people feel like they’re making enough, but without tracking their spending, it’s easy for money to slip away. If detailed tracking is difficult or you just don’t have time, simplify your budget and tracking methods. There are really only 3 main things you need to know – 1) how much is coming in, 2) how much is going out and 3) how much is left over. This is enough insight to start making different decisions.

Q: I’ve been trying to stick to a budget, but every time something unexpected happens—like a car repair or medical bill—I end up overspending. How do I handle these surprises without blowing my budget?

A: Life happens, and that’s why having an emergency fund is key. Start by saving $500 to $1,000 for unexpected expenses. This cushion will help you handle surprises without derailing your financial progress.

Remember that financial wellness is a journey, not a destination. The goal is really just to be 1% better today than you were yesterday. You’re not alone in this journey—reach out, let us know what’s keeping you up at night. We’re here to support you.

1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN’s

According to court documents, Monica Svobodny, 52, worked as the Supply Chain and Engineering Manager at a furniture manufacturing company located in Edina, Minnesota. Svobodny used her managerial position to embezzle funds and convert them to her own use and benefit.

Svobodny regularly used company credit cards for unauthorized personal expenses such as designer clothing, spa services, and luxury hotel stays. To cover her fraud, she left unapproved credit card expenses as “pending” for accounting purposes. On more than 300 occasions, she used company cards to transfer funds to herself via PayPal to cover personal expenses. Svobodny also edited PayPal transaction receipts and fraudulently listed some of the expenses as payments to a defunct company.

‘New Face of Tech’ Scholarship Program Expands Globally for its 8th Year

For the first time, the program invites women globally who are pursuing degrees S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Art, Engineering and Math) fields to apply. Fifty winners will receive a $1,500 scholarship, mentorship and more.

1,000 Dreams Fund, a nonprofit serving talented women in need, is pleased to announce the global expansion of its New Face of Tech Scholarship Program, now in its eighth year.

In total, Svobodny knowingly and willfully embezzled more than $1,137,000 over a period of seven years.

On April 10, 2024, Svobodny pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of wire fraud. She was sentenced in U.S. District Court by Judge Ann D. Montgomery. This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Edina Police Department with assistance from the FBI.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca E. Kline prosecuted the case.

Powered by HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the New Face of Tech Scholarship Program spotlights and financially supports the new face of tech -- women pursuing big dreams in the world of technology and innovation. Interested students are encouraged to apply by taking the New Face of Tech Challenge. Tech and STEM occupations continue to be one of the fastest-growing professional occupations among U.S workers, according to the U.S Department of Labor. Recent research featured by CIO.com indicates women are still underrepresented, underpaid, and often discriminated against in the tech industry. The ratio of women to men in tech roles has declined in the past 35 years, with half of women who go into tech dropping out by the age of 35, according to data from Accenture. HARMAN and 1,000 Dreams Fund hope to reverse these trends for future women leaders in tech.

“For eight years, HARMAN has been honored to partner with 1000 Dreams Fund to empower talented

young women pursuing careers in S.T.E.M. through HARMAN Inspired, our global cause initiative. This year, I am honored to expand our reach to include young women from around the globe”, said Darrin Shewchuk, SVP Public Affairs & Communications and Chief of Staff to CEO at HARMAN. ‘’We continue to be in awe of the talented young women who participate in the New Face of Tech Scholarship Program. We are eager to watch this next generation of technology leaders thrive as they continue their education and advance in the careers they pursue. Since its founding in 2016, 1DF has had a goal of providing scholarships that help fund the “extras” or outside-of-the-classroom opportunities like conferences and seminars or textbooks, tech devices and other educational expenses that often go unfunded by traditional scholarship programs. The New Face of Tech Scholarship Program is accepting applications through November 22, 2024. Students with career aspirations in tech can enter by submitting a photo that demonstrates how they represent the New Face of Tech along with a description of their dream in tech and how they plan to use the grant funding to achieve their goals. Winners will be selected based on the quality of their submission, including a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in tech and clear vision for how winning the New Face Tech Challenge will help to further accelerate progress towards their dream.
