Putting the Care Back into Health Care You Deserve A Holistic Perspective

You’re sitting on the exam table when the doctor finally comes in.

He tries not to appear like he’s rushing when he asks you the reason for your visit (while simultaneously scanning your chart and typing on his computer).

Scott Ware is the Editor of Radiance Magazine.

You know the appointment time is short so you think fast, trying to remember all of your symptoms.

A big reason you’re here is because your insurance covers it. Well, not all of it.

There are always extra costs you pay and shrug off as “necessary.”

The doctor is extra-busy because he has to see more patients to pay for rising malpractice insurance and to compensate for the reduction in payments from insurance companies.

We have many of the best holistic healing professionals right here in Radiance Magazine who care about your total well-being almost as much as you do

At least he has some pharmaceutical company incentives to offset all this, as long as he prescribes one drug over another. Every little bit helps, right? Or does it?

He examines you, orders tests and meds and tells you to book a follow-up. You’re grateful, but...is this you? You feel like something’s missing from the whole examination and healing process. Maybe it’s you. You might even wonder if you have a right to expect caring when you receive health care but realize that fell out of fashion a while ago.

On the other hand, being a (w)holistic practitioner means taking into account the entirety of who you are; your physical, emotional and even spiritual well-being. In addition to the reason for your visit, a holistic practitioner may ask: Are the foods you eat working for or against you? Have you tried incorporating aromatherapy oils? Are you angry or frustrated? Depressed or anxious? Is your relationship with your significant other working or lagging in significant areas? Do you contribute to a community of like-minded (and like-hearted) people in a way that satisfies you? Is your life in balance?

While we will continue to use Western medicine when we must, we’ll keep a sharp eye on it to make sure our insurance company’s goals match our wellness goals.

Is it true you like to approach therapy from the point of view of relationships?

LEA: My specialty is psychotherapy, so whoever you are, whatever challenges you have that’s related to relationships, I can assist you. Even children. Something is causing a child to behave in a certain way within their environment, which is not conducive to them functioning well and getting their needs met. I can assist with these types of situations to help bring stability and peace to the household.

What issues are people coming to you with lately?

I’m seeing a lot of depression and anxiety, and how that affects their job and relationships. For children, it’s angry outbursts, nervousness and inattention. They’re very upset about rules and authority figures. And, believe it or not, are very depressed. Recent studies are showing that children as young as five are being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which is really heartbreaking to me.

So there are dynamics in the environment unknowingly contributing to this?

Yes, they may not be clinically ADHD, they’re just reacting to what’s occurring in the space. In school, if the classrooms are overcrowded, the teachers want those kids to be behaving, and the fastest way is to medicate the child. Hello! That’s a fouryear old. I know there are true ADHD’s out there, but not in these mind-boggling numbers!

What is your approach in these situations?

Most people run into problems by how they react. What I can offer them is a different way of viewing things, give them healthy and empowering coping and communicating skills so they make choices instead of just knee-jerk reactions. If you have a healthier and more empowered way of addressing your challenges, life is good. If you’re just going to keep letting your anger or problems rule the day, your goal to have healthy relationships in your life won’t be realized.

Do you utilize certain techniques to help people through this process?

My clients find it very helpful and supportive when I hold them accountable to what they want out of life, even if they’re as young as four years old! They have a healthy active brain. When I hold my clients accountable with a realistic expectation about the patterns of how they’re going to do things, or how fast or slow, depending on their developmental level, they will rise up to meet it. Once I see some effort and movement, I make sure to validate them for that, which is very important. I’m not just sharing coping and empowering skills, it’s also about “Hey, I see you. I see your goodness—thank you for sharing that.” And that’s a good, strong beginning.

When Holistic Practitioners Become Professionals The Holistic Chamber of Commerce Supports You Camille Leon started the Holistic Chamber of Commerce seven years ago to give consumers a place to find professionals who offer a comprehensive and natural approach as to the health and wellness of themselves and also their business, their money and so much more. Camille’s other message is for these healers and professionals to own what they do and not be afraid to charge a fair price for services.

Some practitioners who aren’t doing as well suggest the national political climate could be blamed.

CAMILLE: There are 3.17 million people in Orange County. Plenty of potential clients, customers and patients.

The law of abundance, right? There really is plenty for everybody. By utilizing the resources of the Holistic Chamber of Commerce and working together, especially in places like Orange County, we make it more attractive to consumers.

Someone who would not ordinarily consider a holistic option will see an organization like the Holistic Chamber of Commerce and say, “Oh, they must be professionals.”

Are people in general taking less care of themselves?

Are they less likely to hire a healing practitioner, for instance, because they’re not really thinking about self-care?

It’s because they’re not hearing about holistic health and wellness, that the message isn’t getting through enough.

And yet we’re pretty clear that those people would all benefit from it, whether it’s seeing a chiropractor, getting a massage, getting a colonic, seeing an acupuncturist or getting comfortable with essential oils or energy medicine, not to

mention emotional health and wellness. There’s physical fitness, emotional health and wellness, and there’s also financial health.

Who couldn’t benefit from all of that?

What else does the HCC represent?

This is a trickle-up movement. I don’t say things like “give and take.” I say “give and receive.” Give and receive is collaborative.

Give and receive is sharing and caring. My job is to create the bridge that allows more mainstream people—consumers—to see the benefits of engaging their health and finances and business from a holistic perspective. People don’t have to settle. They need to know they’re worth this kind of whole, comprehensive approach.

How much attention should such a professional pay to their brand and their message?

A lot. It doesn’t matter if we’re a good healer or not if no one is listening to us or seeing our message. If no one is coming to you because you refuse to be online, or you just haven’t gotten around to your website yet or any of your free social media profiles, it doesn’t matter that you’re the best healer because those 3.2 million people can’t find you.

What about the ones who say they have enough clients?

I would say, “You do have enough, but I thought you were a healer, here to help heal the world? I love that you’re preaching to the choir, but are you doing anything to preach beyond the choir, the people who really need you? And don’t tell me that they can’t afford to pay you because some of the wealthiest people are actually hurting the most.”

Why Pet Guardians Call Me Insights on Your Pets’ Purpose

People ask what happens in an animal communication session. The answer: I share telepathic information with your pet or pets. They send me words, pictures, emotions and physical sensations that explain their physical and emotional experience of living with you as their guardian.

My mission is simple: to strengthen the bonds between pets and their people. Here are common topics we tackle weekly.

Getting to Know A Kitten or Puppy: The most charming appointments are baby meetings. There are no known issues, but people want to understand the essence of this new family member.

Adopting A Rescue Animal: One Sheltie named Sadie kept snapping at the friends of the elderly woman who recently adopted her. During our session, we discovered Sadie had been in three foster homes and LOVED her new guardian, but all the people who had ever taken her, including away from her original home, were older women. She didn’t want to be taken away again, and felt growling made her safe. Once assured that this was her “forever home,” she was a changed dog.

Taming A Pushy or Aggressive Animal: I often get calls from people with an animal whose personality is larger than life. Sometimes their souls are just huge and they need a more important job or more activity. Other times the owner hates rules and avoids obedience training, so the dog thinks he’s in charge. I ask the person to really commit to their animal because both the person and the pet must change to create true harmony.

Is it Time? My personal ethics prevent me from telling people if or when to euthanize their pets, and my experience tells me that often the vet prognosis is off or the animal wants more time. What I can tell you is the pain severity and if the animal is open to more treatment.

Pets often say they aren’t dying that day and, instead, they want parties or ice cream. Months later, they have often improved. The owner-pet bond is strong; trust that you will know when it’s time.

Talking to A Pet Who’s Passed Over: Whether it’s been two weeks or 20 years, it’s always wonderful to talk to someone’s beloved pet.

Does Energy Medicine Work?

If I Hadn’t Experienced It For Myself…

I understand why people are skeptical about energy healing. I don’t even know if I would’ve ever tried it except for three reasons: 1. I was in constant pain from a back injury 2. Nothing worked to ease it 3. An offer to heal me dropped in my lap–what did I have to lose?

It was a Saturday morning on July 13, 2002, when my neighbor, Angelo, knocked on my door and asked, “Would you like to learn Reiki?”

“Sure, what’s Reiki?” He told me it was a healing technique from Japan where energy is transmitted through I felt a warm sensation and a light pressure, even though she wasn’t even touching my body.

It was strange...and wonderful

the palms of the hands (“Rei” is Japanese for God’s wisdom and “Ki” means life-force energy).

It turns out a Reiki Master named Eleanor was staying with him and teaching him Reiki and they needed someone to practice on.

I was soon lying on my stomach as Eleanor’s hands hovered over my body.

“Do you have pain here, in your lower back?” she asked.

I hadn’t told her about my injury, which I got three weeks earlier while kickboxing. My opponent had landed a round-house kick to my kidneys. I stood there, unable to move.

“Are you okay?” I re member him saying. “Yes,” I replied, then my knees buckled and I collapsed.

Eventually I was able to get up and move around, but my back has been in constant pain ever since.

Eleanor now held her hands over my lower back. I felt a warm sensation and a light pressure, even though she wasn’t even touching my body. It was strange... and wonderful.

After a short while, she stopped, and my back was no longer in pain.

From that point on, no one can tell me Reiki doesn’t work. After my body was healed, I knew I wanted to give 16

that healing experience to others. A spark had lit a fire within me that was just waiting to burn.

I told everyone I met about my experience and I practiced Reiki on anyone who would let me. This began my journey into exploring holistic healing modalities, and I never looked back. I would later complete a four-year master’s program in Traditional Chinese Medicine and, after many years of practice, become a Reiki Master Teacher in my own right. If you’d like, I can share it with you, too.

remember being struck by how kind and compassionate he was with my gentle spirit. He understood the fear and heaviness I had surrounding my health, and could see many energetic blocks in my body and astral field.

A Mystical Journey with a Shaman

“This is the form my spirit chose.”

Would you agree that when most people think of a shaman, their first image is not of a blond-haired white woman?

SHAMAN ISABELLA: Yes. I believe everyone is a shaman or healer of one kind or another. We’ve just forgotten or chosen not to tap into our inner wisdom. Some people have said, “How dare you call yourself a shaman. You’re not indigenous, you’re not this or that.” I had to really stand up for myself and say, “This is the form my spirit chose to be in this lifetime, as a shaman.” There are many other lifetimes where I was an African shaman, a Mongolian shaman, a Native American shaman. No disrespect to any culture, but I believe we’re all indigenous to somewhere.

You can challenge me all you want, but my many healed clients and Yelp reviews say otherwise, and I come from the most humble place when I say that.

You had a hardcore life.

Yes, I ran away from home at 14, was a hopeless drug addict. A teenage mom, a battered wife. I even spent time in prison. I had many challenges. I know today that I experienced that type of trauma because I was a shaman.

And the Peruvian shamans, the lineage from which I was taught in this lifetime, from the age of 14, have to live in the jungle, they have to kill the rooster and cook the ayahuasca and learn how to live with the jaguars. My jaguars in this life were the streets of Hollywood. I had

a hard time believing I was a healer, part of me wanted nothing to do with it. I was an acting teacher with a Master of Fine Arts degree. I didn’t even know what a shaman was. I’d always believed in energy, the Universe and the God of my own understanding.

The healing arts are a practice, and the more you practice, the better and more skilled you become.

When did you know you were a healer?

It didn’t register for quite a while. I believe in vibration and positive and negative, but I don’t believe in heaven and hell or religious concepts. When I began practicing in 2007, I had a really hard time believing in what I was doing as I am a feeler-healer, which seemed “less” than the people who are seers or can hear guidance. What I found is that those types of qualities needed time to develop. The healing arts are a practice, and the more you practice, the better and more skilled you become.

When did you turn the corner and know you could make a difference in someone’s healing?

I found myself in the Amazon jungle in 2009 and realized I was still in victim mode. When I came home from that trip, I turned my home into the Orange County Healing Center and I’ve never looked back. I also had to believe what other people were saying because after a healing they felt better. I remember thinking, “Really?! You feel better?” It is an incredible feeling to be helping people at that level. I’m not for everyone. Not everyone finds me.

But those who do are ready. And I am grateful. As the old saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

Have You Forgotten About the Matrix?

What are my dreams? What are my goals?” This is about making you powerful enough to break the unconsciously lived pattern.

Living unconsciously can lead to masking it and hiding out?

Yes, with drinking and drugs or who knows what other addiction? It’s about breaking that.

How do you go about this?

One of the classes I work with at the Sacred Geometry Academy teaches how to use crystals to energetically bring in more light and abundance to your life. They’re also very effective for enhancing your dreams, which is called Crystal Dreaming. We incorporate crystals for healing work also. Crystals make a space more livable, more tolerable. Crystals, herbs, all of these things are about getting back to our connection with nature, to Gaia, to Earth, to the shamanic teachings we’ve forgotten.

How does Sacred Geometry figure in?

Sacred Geometry is what was here first when Spirit first created the world. Each shape actually has very specific meanings and uses to help you move through life and connect with Spirit. Being aware of it in your daily life can help remind you that you are that eternal being, you are a spirit having a physical experience. Sacred Geometry can take you back to that original blueprint. We are here to have a more amazing life, a joyful life and all of these are tools to bring us back to that space.

3rd Annual SoCal VegFest Opens at OC Fairgrounds As I find myself deep in preparation for the third annual SoCal VegFest Oct. 28 and 29 at the Orange County Fairgrounds, I smiled as I remembered an interesting encounter on the way to checking out the festival site this year. You see, there were some vegetables and fruits hitchhiking and so I naturally picked them up (they were in season and, therefore, safe to pick). After they settled into the passenger’s seat, I found them to be quite chatty, as you’ll soon see. — Maryam

The Energetic Power of a Gem What’s in Your Pocket?

Mahesh “Mike” Shastri works most of the day at his business Highglow Jewelers, but he’s a spiritual teacher first and never hesitates to take a student of life aside to share his wisdom. –Editor

Given gemstones energetic qualities, which ones do you keep close to you and why?

MAHESH: I wear a yellow-colored precious gemstone called Yellow Sapphire on my Jupiter finer, the index finger, which is associated to protect from serious adversity. I also wear a green emerald on my pinky, which is associated with Mercury and has the amazing ability to increase my memory power, as well as my financial position and status.

What miraculous or healing effects have you noticed from wearing them?

The Jupiter gemstone–the sapphire–has saved me from near-death or serious injuries due to a bus accident in which I was traveling from Orlando to Dallas in a wedding party on May 24th, 1997 at 5am in Louisiana. The bus rolled over two and a half times. The police said it was a miracle that nobody died. It was all over CNN.

I understand people come from all over to see you on this subject.

Yes, since 2002 people have found great success with the gemstones I have advised them to work with and carry with them based on their life situation, their trauma, and so forth.

We talk about how the planet alignment affects you from the gravity of those masses moving around. I use a dowsing system coupled with a body aura test we can pick up signals from. I actually do this free of charge because it’s my seva, my way to help people. The bottom line is everyone has different body chemistry, so whatever their independents needs are, I show them how gemstones can help. Through an aura reading I can also determine what minerals you are deficient in.

You own a jewelry store with lots of diamonds, and yet you don’t wear any.

Ironically, they do not work with my system. Whether a stone is so-called precious or semi-precious is beside the point. This is something everyone needs to test: what gems work best with their specific chemistry and energy. It’s not the same for everyone.

Since then, you’ve done a lot of research on the relationship between the energetic properties of gemstones and their effects on the body.

Yes, I did a fellowship at the Gemological Institute of Great Britain, and a specialty in diamonds at the Gemological Institute of America. I helped promote these ideas there at first by forwarding them the research that had been done by respected experts and authors who had written on the subject, and then by giving talks and doing one-on-one consultations, which I do to this day.

That’s why we have a spiritual practice, because the same principles are always at work, whether it’s a national or global event or a family or relationship event, right? We need to ask, “Where is our vibration? Are we vibrating at a higher level of consciousness? Are we emanating love? Are we

What is your core teaching?

I teach and practice from a model I call the Four Levels of Consciousness. It’s a metaphor of a four-level house where the first floor represents how we feel when we’re in our flight response, the lower vibration, where we’re very powerless, depressed, insecure and anxious. We have very little energy, we want to escape. The second floor is a fight response. Our emotions are more active, aggressive and our ego is generating power. Here we’ll get angry, fight back or try to get revenge. The third floor is where we’re accessing higher consciousness. We’re filled with optimism, faith and love. The fourth floor is what I call the “Observatory,” where we’re observers. It’s our Higher Consciousness, where we observe our changing state of emotions and others without ego attachment.

What propels your passion for inspiring and empowering others?

There are no other soul choices for me. It is all I have ever been called to do. My passion is to first grow myself, evolve and awaken spiritually. Secondarily, my gift is teaching, so I love to give that gift.

How do we move between these floors?

By either desperation or inspiration. Every time we’re triggered down to the first or second floor, it activates our “stuff.” Our past history, our programming, our past pain, 28

which completely colors our perception so we’re not seeing clearly. If we’re living down there, we can’t access higher levels of inspiration, creativity or new ideas that can produce solutions and create new opportunities. So, I say, when you take a trip downstairs, process it, heal it and get back upstairs. I’m completely interested in “What do I need to do to be able to live on levels three and four most of the time?” That’s my intention. I want to feel good. I want to feel God. Only when I’m living up in that realm, am I any use to anybody. And, anyway, it’s no fun to live down there, and I want life to be fun! It’s not about ignoring it though; it’s about dealing with our own issues that took us downstairs in the first place.

What is the foundation of your beliefs?

For nearly 20 years, I’ve been a Religious Science Ordained Minister, and have taught The Science of Mind, ie, the study of consciousness. Meditation comprises a big part of my practice. Another deep foundational study has also been the “‘I Am’ Discourses,” which has been in my life since I was 18. My North star is my own “I Am Presence.” The I Am Presence is the Divine individualized as me. I Am that, I Am. When I say that, I get it. I Am is God. I Am is the Presence doing the talk. I Am is the Presence having this conversation. I Am knows the answers. I Am is the Power.

As for Janette Freeman? She has a good personality and is an okay person, but she’s as insecure as anybody else, and has the same fears and anxieties; but the I Am of me doesn’t worry. And it’s a daily practice to come back to “I Am that.”

That is what realigns me. Loving the Divine Presence, and the Divine Presence loving me. I can give devotion to this Presence and surrender to this Presence. I could stress about what to do in a situation, but when I ask Divine Presence, it knows what to do. When I’m in this relaxed state of mind, everything works out, I know everything will be just fine.

What do people come to you for?

Most of us were raised with some sort of dysfunction and developed this automated system that reacts- in order to protect themselves and survive in this world of limitation and fear. Yet, we also have this high ideal based in spiritual truth that we are part of God and perfect, whole and complete.

So how can we get to that place of “whole and complete” more often?

First, we realize, with compassion, that this programming exists, and then we practice feeding ourselves from a fountain of spiritual truth and a regular, consistent spiritual practice. This actually rewires the brain towards the happiness and freedom we’re seeking, and is even “Even after doing a lot of work on ourselves, people who are achieving spiritual growth still sometimes ask, “Why did this happen to me again?”

We don’t let it happen. It happens automatically because of the programming.

What can we do right now to break out of this programming and lead the lives we want?

Repetition is the key. Our programming was created by repetition and, so, repetition of positive, empowering thoughts and practices create the shift and will take us to new places. Just having a new, positive thought once or twice is nice, but unless we’re activating high-level repetition, it usually doesn’t take root. We have to realize it, create a new pattern, rinse and repeat.

So we’re not staying focused on a new habit long enough?

Exactly. If we don’t create a new program, the old programming always wins.

What can we do?

One thing is exposing ourselves to audio and video teachings, positive community and supportive friends, daily reading and input as part of our practice. It can and does fit into your life if you want to win. It will transform your life. What we think about, we bring about.

You’ve Blocked Your Inner

Voice—Now What?

How to Get Easy Access to Intuitive Intelligence Spiritually minded people know the easiest way to move along the spiritual journey is to listen to and follow your intuition, which is the inner voice of your highest self.

Unlike logical or conscious reasoning, intuition comes to you in a flash. So life should be easy, right?

Not so fast. It turns out there are seven reasons why you can’t access your intuitive intelligence, along with their remedies: 1. We have spiritual impurities. Humans are layered with inhibiting beliefs and fears that take us away from our Higher Self. This challenge can be met when you do the inner work to install empowering information so you become a clear vessel, a clean slate.

2. Not grasping that there is something deeper than our own knowledge. When you’re connected to your Higher Self, information comes from Source and you become one. Once you acknowledge this, it’s easier to listen and act on it. Anything else shows noncommitment, that you’re not taking your intuition seriously. This can stop your intuition from communicating with you.

3. Comparing yourself to others’ methods. I was told that meditation is the best way (being still, listening to music, incense), but it didn’t work for me at first. It was so frustrating. What helped me was something called “active meditation.” I would take a walk for 30 minutes and ask a question. Someone (my Higher Self) would start talking to me. Now I have two forms of meditation to use.

4. Your body is stuck with bad memories. Your body remembers every trauma, fear and unmet need. Even from the womb and past lives! You might think you forgot and forgave, but chances are your body hasn’t released it yet.

5. Your environment is toxic. Where you work, live and interact with others could be a toxic drain on your life force. Anything that’s toxic brings drama and drama drowns your voice. Clearing and cleansing yourself in this situation is a must.

6. Your body is tense. Free your body from tension. Go get a massage. Do yoga or Zumba. When you move your body, you create new energy. More exercising 32

PATRICIA: This falls under the category of letting go.

It doesn’t make it a bad thing, but I’ve lost being able to walk into a room and get noticed immediately. I’ve lost that attention-getting energy.

That’s right. It doesn’t come in a classroom. It doesn’t come with a degree on the wall.

Does someone need to be in a particular place in their life to be helped by you?

Not at all. My motto is “Meet them where they’re at, give them what they need.” Frequently, I will do my “Divine Your Power Energy Medicine Healings,” which I do on myself as well. In fact, people are surprised and shocked that I am up and around in the capacity I am so soon after my surgery.

For the Love of Grace Spiritual Practice Works I had a friend, I’ll call her Grace.

Grace let me put some boxes of memorabilia in her storage unit. At first, for free. Later she asked me for $20 a month. Fair enough.

Then she said she was taking an extended vacation to Eastern Europe. I gave her a check to cover six months.

At the end of six months, she emailed. She’d fallen in love with a local and was staying in Istanbul. She didn’t know when she’d be back. She demands that I pay another six months in advance.

I don’t want my things stored there indefinitely. It’s mostly photos of my daughter growing up, Halloween costumes I made for her, childhood keepsakes. Precious.

Another friend of mine says I can put the boxes in his second garage for free. I email Grace and say I’d like my things back. She says NO, she wants the six months deposit.

My free storage friend suggests I get an attorney to fight it, an expensive proposition.

More months go by. I say I’ll pay her $200 just to get my things out. She says NO, I just have to wait until, when and if, she returns. Now I owe her $580.

Before having a consistent spiritual practice, I would’ve instantly gone victim, belly up. Now I meditated and chanted. Another friend who has a healthy spiritual practice says to tell her I’ll meet her in small claims court.

What?

That’s a shocker to me. He said the Shakyamuni Buddha had a cousin, Devadatta, who was jealous of him, and constantly attacked him and even tried to kill him.

Shakyamuni regarded his cousin as a boddhisattva, a teacher, who would make him stronger, although sometimes Shakyamuni did have to reprimand his cousin and put him in his place occasionally. Also news to me. I was told to be gentle but firm.

I continue meditating and chanting. The thought drops in to contact a highly successful attorney I know who is offers free legal aid services. Perfect.

to get your belongings back. I will gladly oblige. Thanks, Grace.” Thanks? Wow. Not only did I get my boxes back, Grace ended up giving me, practically making me take, her expensive street bike. She wanted me to take more. She asked if I would help her move some things to the Goodwill. I agreed.

I got my belongings, didn’t pay her a penny and gained a bike. I would have never imagined a win-win, a real victory.

I’ll probably never see, talk to or email Grace again. I imagine she’s happily living somewhere in the Slavic land with her sultry sultan. She probably feels lighter in this life having donated all those belongings, and certainly freer without my baggage.

The way you help people is multi-faceted. How would you describe it?

TERI LYNN: I do intuitive, aka psychic readings. When I look at a chart, I’m seeing where the obstacles are. I see what the obstacles mean and I see how to unravel them.

I see knots and strings, and I can pull them at them to determine direction and to see where things might have gotten garbled up. It helps me divine where they’re not to go and where they might consider going so they can make choice decisions that allow them to move forward with confidence.

They want to know, “How did I get myself in here?” and “How do I get myself out of here?”

How does astrology fit in?

It’s like having the stars’ patterns or charts to review, analyze, assess and determine what’s going on with each person’s life. I’m able to pull at the stars and see them coming together in aspect. I look at Mars aspect to Uranus or how Jupiter is aligning with Saturn and say to myself, “This person is in trouble, they’re not flowing.”

We all get our propensities from our genes, but when you see your stars, those are the propensities you get to work out from the soul level. When you view your chart, you get to see the lessons you’re to learn, you get to see how to play them out in your best interests and in spiritual awareness.

Astrology allows me to view several choices available to my clients plus a path that fits them.

Did you always have these abilities?

I remember saying, “Daddy, I can see things.” “No, don’t do that,” he’d say. He said people who do that are “kooks, cons and crazies” and pushed me to go into the corporate world. In his time, many people who did what I do were 42

This Is Your Life—How Do You Want to Feel?

Four Steps to Finding Joy in All Circumstances

Years ago, in a business law college class, we were instructed to write a paper on “Business Ethics.” As I did my research, I came across an opinion that posed the question: Does using ethics and corporate business together created an oxymoron?

We are, at our core, a collection of millions of beliefs that form our personal paradigm. We need to understand and realign the particular beliefs that cause pain and suffering by getting to the original cause and breaking the process down into four simple steps. Here’s how:

An oxymoron occurs when two words are placed together that contradict each other. It can be used in jest like “honest attorney” or “government intelligence.”

Step One: Forgiveness

Consider the phrase “joyful life.” Does that feel like an oxymoron to you? Do you think of life and joy as two separate things that cannot possibly coexist?

Joy is elusive for many of us. Would you describe your life, even at times, as jubilant, euphoric, delightful, triumphant, filled with exultation, rejoicing, ecstasy-like, rapturous or exuberant?

I know a hypnotherapist who practiced reaching levels of this every day. When I asked him, “How are you?” he would consistently answer, “Exceedingly well.”

His voice and expression would consistently match the words. I would sometimes wonder, “Is he for real?” Is it truly possible to be that darn happy every day?

The point is if someone taught us to feel powerless, then we’ll tend to blame others rather than act in an empowered way.

Years ago, I looked into the mirror of my soul and assessed that I was anything but joyous. In fact, I was angry, resentful, hurt and frustrated as my everyday way of being. That is not to say there weren’t happy aspects or moments of my life, but I realized, more often than not, that my daily default was something other than deliriously happy.

I embarked on what would be a decade-plus journey of learning, instead, to exist in a default state of joy.

Having joy as my default doesn’t mean I don’t get upset, sad or angry from time to time. It means I‘ve managed to create a shift in my default mode.

Step Two: Detachment Step Three: Compassion Step Four: Reprogram The steps outlined here are geared toward looking at the people in our lives rather than singular events or largescale occurrences. The point is if someone taught us to feel powerless, then we’ll tend to blame others rather than act in an empowered way.

For instance, if you’re deeply unhappy with the current political climate and you feel our government is less than optimal, somewhere along the line, someone taught you to feel powerless to do anything about it. It’s the powerlessness, not the event or circumstance, that robs you, and all of us, of joy. Getting to the origin of who taught you that and turning it around isn’t going to give you a new president, congress, judiciary committee or governor, but it would give you the feeling of the ability to do something about it.

The first step is to forgive the person who wronged, harmed or imposed upon you in a manner that has now resulted in residual anger and unhappiness. This might seem obvious and over-simplified. Many believe that, by offering As hard as it may be to see, they’re in your life for a reason.

forgiveness to someone who caused them pain, they are condoning the action or letting the person off the hook.

This is not true. Forgiving a thief who stole something from you doesn’t mean you overlook that theft is wrong and disregard the crime. It means you release the pain and

suffering from your own energy. The forgiveness is for you, not for them. You don’t even have to verbalize it to them personally; it’s something you do inside.

The easiest way to get to a place of forgiveness is to remember no deed or act goes unseen by the forces of the Universe. Even though a person who has wronged you has seemingly escaped justice on this plane, their karma will be balanced somewhere, sometime, in some life. We do not need to be their judge. And, holding a grudge against them affects our karma. Let it go and complete Step One. Step Two takes some faith and a strong connection to your Divine Creator or Life Force. The person who wronged you is, at his or her core, a Divine Being of Light, just like you and me. They’re on a journey of learning and growing. It’s not for us to decide how, when, where and at what speed.

We do not know their past, present or future karma.

We do not know why we intersected with them in this lifetime. But we can decide to embrace the concept that everything happens for a reason and there is a great plan in which we are not vouchsafed the wisdom. If we decide to trust this great plan that we are all on a journey of growth, then we can move on to Step Two, Detachment.

Here we decide that we live in a safe universe and the person who wronged us has, in the much larger picture, done nothing wrong but simply played a role and presented a challenge in which every being has an opportunity to learn, grow and become stronger.

according to the laws of the Universe, they are simply reflecting something we need to see and adjust in ourselves.

When we make the shift on the inside, things in our environment usually shift at a surprising clip.

For example, I’ve sat in prayer for people who, within minutes or hours, behaved differently upon being the recipient of pure love-based energy.

Granted, it’s conditioned human nature to condemn, judge and shame what we consider the worst behaviors.

know punishment does not rehabilitate. Yes, those who are a danger to others might need to be isolated, but not just left there to become worse versions of themselves. It doesn’t mean we condone their chaotic or controlling actions or engage with them in unsafe behaviors.

It means we see the soul beyond the actions and send their soul love so it can emerge and take the lead for the troubled person. Compassion is the most powerful of the four steps because it affirms that we have risen above judgment, fear and victimhood. Imagine if we all sent love and compassion to every person in jail daily? Give love and compassion and attain Step Three.

Step Two is a BIG step: we decide our persecutor has done nothing wrong and has nothing to be forgiven for, and we no longer identify ourselves as a victim. The person is simply reflecting a lesson we need to learn. The Universe is in charge of the plan and has it all under control. Detach from judgment and complete Step Two.

Step Four, the final process of reprogramming, can be very easy. The only thing tricky about Step Four is the lack of knowledge and information about its necessity.

Step Three, compassion, can be the most challenging.

This is where we decide to go beyond detachment and turn to unconditional love.

To complete Step Four, put in writing the deal you’ve just agreed to in the previous three steps with someone you feel has wronged you, i.e., to see them with unconditional love without condoning negativity. Putting it in writing tightens it up and sets it, so to speak, in stone.

Imagine where you would be spiritually if, instead of deeming certain individuals the worst possible examples of a human being, you sat in meditation and realized what they need more than anything else is unconditional love and then compassion for the difficult journey they are on.

I imagine you would be closer to joy. As hard as it may be to see, they’re in your life for a reason. It’s all for you.

Imagine the ones whose conduct we judge as the worst need love sent to them the most. That could also be considered an oxymoron. Except for the fact that,

Step Four asks us to go into our mental paradigm, our belief systems, and rewrite them to align with the first three steps.

After achieving Step Three—where compassion is the first place we go when we observe what we consider undesirable or destructive behavior—we can now access all of our unhelpful beliefs and start rewriting them.

In other words, if you can gain compassion for a thief, then you can gain compassion for someone who consistently behaves selfishly or violently. You start applying the compassion rule to all areas and your behavior shifts to one 45

in which you’re no longer caught up in those unhelpful behaviors. You step outside them completely. This is key to an expansive paradigm shift, not just for you but for all of humankind.

You can now step into a default state of joy. Again, it doesn’t mean we condone, accept or arrogantly put ourselves above these behaviors. Nor do we put ourselves within harm’s reach of someone who’s exhibiting these behaviors. It means, from a safe distance, we’re learning to automatically pray for each situation where we see behaviors in people who are suffering.

I recently met with a woman in a session who had been raped by a family friend when she was very young. As a teenager, she was raped again. She experienced years of pain, suffering, low self-esteem, disempowerment and anger.

In her mid-30s, she spent a long time with a counselor who helped her find her voice, express her anger and gain the courage to bring all of her feelings to the surface. Her counselor asked her to journal all of her thoughts and grievances about those who had harmed her that had resulted in feelings of despair and unhappiness.

Feeling satisfied she had expressed everything she felt, the counselor asked her to burn the journal in her backyard and release the pain to the Universe.

She forgave those who had harmed her.

But now, 10 years later, she was suffering from a debilitating physical illness. As a medical intuitive, I scanned her body. Even though she’d forgiven the past, she still held beliefs and feelings that she and others could be harmed.

She had completed Step One, Forgiveness, but hadn’t moved to Step Two, Detachment. She was still in fear mode and didn’t believe she lived in a safe universe. As a result, she spoke loudly, proudly and with passion for 46

“the truth.” She was fighting to ensure neither she nor anyone else would lose their voice.

This fear-based warrior energy was wearing out her body. She isn’t done with her work. I shared the three remaining steps for her to complete.

I asked her if she would like her belief system to be restored to that of someone who had never been raped. It doesn’t mean she suddenly has amnesia. It means she’s not governed by the past.

It means those events or people don’t control her ability to lead a joyous life.

Although she is happily married with children, she doesn’t live in a place of joy as her default.

As I move through the Four Steps, whenever I’m in a state other than joy, I can’t help but pause and be grateful for knowing I have the ability to adjust that. The steps can take minutes once you have the hang of them. For something with larger ramifications, it could take months. If you’d rather not, supplement when necessary Your body has an amazing ability to create Vitamin D by just going outside for awhile (and just smile) while getting some sunshine (the smile is optional, but you may not be able to help it).

Especially in the cooler yet still sunny days of early autumn, Vitamin D produced by the sun benefits our health by supporting our immune system, bones, heart and lungs. Yet, given our modern, more sedentary lifestyle, many people are coming up Vitamin D short due to indoor inactivity, mostly sitting, which can inhibit our bodies from making enough of the sunshine vitamin.

If you live where there’s less sun or you’re mostly inside during the day, you can get your vitamin D from diet or supplements. Foods big on D are fish, eggs, and mushrooms.

People with Vitamin D deficiency may experience muscle weakness and can often be at risk for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancers, bone diseases and memory impairment as they get older.

If you decide to go the supplement route, look for whole food supplements.

In cases of bone diseases, it’s important to ingest sufficient amounts of Vitamin D from the food we eat because it helps absorb calcium, essential for healthy bones. Without Vitamin D, some of the calcium can’t be optimally used for bone health.

Take care not to be in the sun too long to prevent skin damage, of course. People with fair skin can usually obtain their dose of Vitamin D in about 20 minutes of exposure.

More time can be spent the darker your skin tone.

If you decide to go the supplement route, look for whole food supplements, specifically Vitamin D3 supplements. A whole-food supplement ensures that the supplement contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals from foods prepared to preserve the integrity of the nutrients. Supplements are best absorbed in wholefood form so look for whole-food supplements first when purchasing Vitamin D. 48

DEAR SHELLY: I’m 65, not working, no pension or retirement, little savings and looking for something I would be happy to wake up to.

I have no family and no significant other. I had a perfect situation that fell through, and sometimes I feel like I’m falling through the cracks. What should I do?

LOST IN TRANSITION Dear Lost In Transition: It feels to me that you have a beautiful heart and that you love people, and what would get you up in the morning is a desire to serve. You have a gift in being able to hear other people’s hearts, and what they do not say. Your best fit for both financial and emotional support would be to find employment where you’re working to support people. It doesn’t feel to me like social work with a government agency where you would get bogged down with red tape and unable to make progress. It feels like case work, and here’s how you find it. Sit down and get still and make a list of five things that you’re moved by and that inspire you. Then Google foundations and agencies that correspond to your desires, like helping young people, for instance. I do see you assisting a young couple in their early 30’s. I don’t feel it’s Planned Parenthood but some agency that helps young

people starting out in their lives. Ask Holy Spirit to tell you where you are needed and to direct you for your Highest Good, and then pay attention where you’re guided to go each day. Make a list each night of what had transpired toward your goal. You will see a plan unfolding. I am specifically getting for you to write down five things that move and inspire you because you will see both a professional and a personal link coming from those five things. Get specific and feel what your heart is saying to you as an active part of this revelatory process. What is SoulCollage ? ®

Is it fun?

Is it a guiding process that opens the door for our souls and psyches to guide us?

A resounding YES to all three!

On the surface, SoulCollage® is a social activity usually done in a small group, in which we create small collage cards from images we select intuitively from magazines.

We can also use our own photographs or art pictures. In other words, it’s whatever you are attracted to or feel compelled to use.

The power of the image reveals aspects of ourselves that are keyed to bring valuable information forward that will help us evolve as human and spiritual beings.

In her book, SoulCollage® Evolving, Seena Frost succinctly describes the evolving process of creating the cards this way: “Each card is a mirror of Self and Soul.”

Hear your soul, listen to your soul.

When you do, the images that are created give you an opportunity to integrate the many parts of yourself, leading to what Depth Psychology refers to as individuation or becoming whole.

We incorporate both the light and the shadow sides of ourselves so we can utilize the cards as messengers with gifts for us when we “read” them.

We may also write a poem or, as I often do, write a Haiku about the card.

We may write what we hear from our soul to complete the sentence. For instance, “I am one who…”

In the group, we create a safe community to share our insights, creativity and fun. In private, we can develop a collection of cards and use them as our own divination deck.

Often a card’s meaning shifts as we grow or circumstances change.

Remember, each card is a part of you, designed to bless you with its healing power.

Understanding your dreams could quell your misery The truth is the accurate interpretations of your nightly mind movies can ease your emotional and psychic suffering, so that you can gracefully navigate through your life.

While most people know dreams have intrinsic value, why is it that we are so quick to dismiss them?

The short answer is that many people who suffer wish to continue doing so, especially when it’s become a crutch or even an addiction. The first key in moving on to a happier life is awareness of what’s happening. In this case, that awareness starts with dreams.

The universe takes a great deal of time and care to deliver your messages

More than once, accurate dream interpretation has saved lives. In symbolism, the mind consistently provides the exact message that its host is longing to hear.

Oftentimes, that message is a way out of the madness and pain that can seem impossible to break free from.

Interpreting your own symbolism can often give hope where there was once only suffering.

How is this possible?

It’s because dream interpretation ultimately leads you to the realization that you aren’t alone.

I had one student who was contemplating suicide. Part of our work together was dream interpretation. Once it hit him that his unconscious mind was tirelessly sending him the guidance that he needed, he finally understood that he mattered. He also realized that something much smarter than himself had his back and wanted him to survive.

Dreams are love letters from our highest selves. In devotion, the symbolism in your dreams guides you to leave your pain behind and to embrace the beauty of what life is offering.

To take it one step further, symbol analysis doesn’t stop with your dreams.

The guidance you receive also happens while you’re awake.

Out of the thousands of symbols surrounding you, your highest self will always pick out the ones most beneficial to you. Whether it’s a color, a license plate, an animal or nature, you are being

guided by the symbols you become aware of in the moment.

All you have to do is pay attention.

All the guidance you could ever ask for is available to you in every moment.

The universe takes a great deal of time and care to deliver your messages because you matter to the world. You can begin to end your suffering by keeping a dream journal. Give it a try. You’ll feel better in the morning.

What’s for Breakfast? Your Body Knows Best Self-Testing for Optimum Health It’s morning and I’m hungry. What should I eat?

I pause for a moment. if I choose poorly, I could get an upset stomach or gas, which will negatively affect my day.

It might also deprive my body of needed nutrients and possibly put me on the road to illness.

If I choose wisely, I’ll feel energized and alive instead of sluggish. My body will optimize the food’s nutrients for my overall wellness.

Hmmm.

So how do I choose?

I ask my body.

I simply ask: “Which one of these grapefruits should come home with me today?”

It turns out that the wisdom in my body (and yours) is far greater than what the conscious mind allows us to access in the moment. It will even give you this information mere seconds after asking.

How? With a technique called “selftesting,” which is part of muscle-strength testing or applied kinesiology, a method of diagnosis based on the fact that various muscles are linked to particular organs or glands.

More than that, self-testing taps into the electrical network that surrounds the body, which is pure energy. Foods, even thoughts and emotions, can have an impact on that system.

Muscles actually weaken when we’re about to give our body something that’s not good for it. A popular self-testing method is asking the body a question like: “Should I buy these grapefruits?”

Then notice if your body sways forward (affirmative) or backward (negative).

With a little practice, it only takes seconds to test.

A friend of mine doesn’t even need to do that much. She simply goes to her heart center and “knows” the response is “yea or nay” to any clear question she asks. Perhaps you can, too.

I don’t often say this, but I find that I look younger and less stressed than most other people my age. I also have fewer health concerns and fewer doctor visits than most people. I believe this is because people are more stressed overall by not self-testing, by not connecting with, partnering with, their own immune system.

With self-testing, I no longer feel overwhelmed facing multiple choices. I

can simply test my way through multiple choices in seconds. This really speeds up my shopping process.
