On behalf of the Board and team here at Naas Racecourse, I am delighted to welcome you all to the first of our Summer Racing, BBQ & Live Music Racedays featuring the Al Shira’aa Racing Irish EBF Naas Oaks Trial (Listed). We have a quality card in store and combined with some great BBQ hospitality options along with live music from After Dark straight after racing, we hope you enjoy your evening.
A special welcome goes to the team and guests of Al Shira’aa Racing who have been wonderful supporters of Naas Racecourse and we thank Sheikha Fatima bint Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Manager Kieran Lalor for their generous support of today’s feature contest. On what should be a great evening of racing, a big welcome goes to some of our other long-standing and new sponsors that feature throughout the card.
We are thrilled to welcome back our sponsors of the groom’s canteen, ARKequine, for one of their sponsored races this season. I look forward to working with Kirsty McCann and her team, and we are excited to see their products in shops soon. Tinnakill House, a leading consignor at all European Sales, are back sponsoring with us and it’s great to see them continuing to produce top-class racehorses from their Laois Nursery.
We are lucky to have such strong support from the people and businesses of Naas town and tonight is the inaugural running of the Dooley Insurance Group Irish EBF Fillies Maiden. Dooley Insurance Group is renowned for its community support and we are thrilled so be a recipient and our thanks to Mary Healy Dooley and the team.
Our thanks of course to the Irish EBF and Nessa Joyce who continue to support Irish racing with their strong prizemoney for connections. We are also delighted to be hosting the Kildare Chamber of Commerce once again for their Summer social evening.
Best of luck to all of the owners, trainers, riders and stable staff who have a runner here this evening – wishing you the best of luck on the racecourse and regardless of the result we hope you enjoy your evening’s racing.
As the summer finally arrives, racegoers can avail of lots of BBQ and other food offerings from our caterers Lily & Wild. As usual, there are plenty of options on the Ground Floor of the Grandstand Café and in The Post self-service restaurant with public bars available in both The Circle and in the Grandstand. Should you have any queries on any of the above, feel free to call into the Race Day office located next to the turnstile where a member of the team will be happy to assist.
Our next raceday, The Naas Town Goes Racing Day & Summer BBQ, takes place on Saturday July 6th. The Panoramic Restaurant is fully booked on the day but we have our BBQ packages available with further information available on www.naasracecourse.com
Best Wishes

Saturday 6th July 2024
At every meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the well-being of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A secondary veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horse requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority

It is a bit of a surprise to see MERRILY dropped in trip after her debut at Listowel but she should be sharper now and may get away with it in this company. Pompano Beach looks best of the others with form, though Brigid’s Cloak shaped well enough until hampered at Listowel. Dandy Man could be the pick of the newcomers. [Alan Sweetman]

One of the more competitive heats on the card and a case can be made for most but it was a pretty eyecatching run from OHAILBHIC over this course and distance two starts ago and five furlongs was probably on the short side at Cork last month. Moltophino showed a lot more last time and Grand City Hall arrives in-form and can’t be dismissed, despite a rise in the weights. [Phill Anderson]

This summer Naas Racecourse will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first fixture, which took place on June 19, 1924.
To mark this momentous occasion, writer, historian and podcaster Turtle Bunbury has produced a fittingly celebratory volume, The Centenary of Naas Racecourse, with the subtitle Nursery Of Champions.
With individual chapters devoted to each decade, and lavishly illustrated by a superb range of historic and contemporary photographs, this splendid large-format work conveys the rich history of the venue in an entertaining and instructive manner.
Bunbury is a prolific researcher and has unearthed a wealth of archival material dealing with the origins of the racecourse and the personalities and horses associated with it.
The text is laid out in a reader-friendly way, comprising chunks of fascinating detail about individual horses, people and races. Some are bite-sized, others more extensive, but uniformly digestible. It’s a format that allows the reader to dip in and out of the book, skipping from one decade to another, always assured of finding an interesting anecdote or nugget of information.
In that respect, the book goes far beyond its brief as a history of a single racecourse. One of the author’s strengths is a reservoir of knowledge of well-known Irish families and public figures, enabling him to provide expansive detail about prominent owners or leading riders and trainers.
The book describes the contribution of local families who have been involved through the 100 years of the track’s existence and embraces the twin themes of continuity and progress in charting a story from modest origins to the vibrant and ambitious racecourse of today.
Almost every significant Irish racing personality of the past 100 years has had a connection with Naas Racecourse. Many great Irish horses have competed there. Bunbury’s words and an array of wonderfully atmospheric photographs do admirable justice to a proud 100-year tradition.
