On behalf of myself, the Board of Directors, and the team here at Naas Racecourse, we are delighted to welcome you here today for the highlight of our flat racing season - Royal Ascot Trials Day & Family Fun Day.
Aidan McGarry Racecourse Manager Eddie Moran Owner Liaison
Today we will see some of the most promising young horses in Ireland competing ahead of the major Irish and international festivals through the summer. We have been fortunate to see the likes of Dawn Approach and Sky Lantern announce themselves on this day prior to classic glory, while in more recent times, the likes of Fairy Godmother and Porta Fortuna have excelled here before Royal Ascot glory. We are hugely appreciative of the support of all the owners, trainers and all their teams.
I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to today’s sponsors. Goffs have been outstanding partners in recent years, proudly sponsoring both the Group 3 Lacken Stakes and our award-winning Goffs Owners & Trainers Lounge. Today’s Lacken Stakes looks set to be a fiercely competitive contest, featuring several highly rated runners using it as a prep for the Commonwealth Cup. This year, we’re also excited to launch the inaugural Goffs Classic Breeze-Up, with horses breezing over two furlongs up the Naas straight the week before selling on the eve of the Irish Derby just down the road at Kildare Paddocks.
We’re also honoured to have the backing of industry giants Coolmore Stud, who are sponsoring two exciting races on today’s card with their promising young stallions Blackbeard and The Antarctic. The Group 3 Fillies’ Sprint, in particular, has proven to be a springboard to Royal Ascot success, having produced stars like Fairy Godmother, Porta Fortuna, and Meditate in the past three years - be sure to mark your cards.
The Power and Lynam families, synonymous with top-class sprinters, continue to support the industry by lending their name to the Sole Power Sprint. This listed race gets more competitive each year and we are looking forward to another exciting renewal.
Once again, the Irish EBF show exceptional support for racing at Naas. Their contribution is felt meeting after meeting, and we are hugely grateful for their role in enhancing our racecards. A special word of thanks to Nessa Joyce for her tireless efforts behind the scenes.
The Tuttle Family, through Owenstown Stud, are among our longest-standing supporters. Their continued sponsorship of the Bill & Averil Whitehead Memorial Stakes is deeply appreciated.
Finally, the Twydil/Clovelly Irish EBF Fillies Maiden promises to feature some exciting prospects. Twydil, a Swiss-based global leader in equine nutrition, is renowned for the quality and consistency of its products — trusted by top trainers and breeders worldwide.
A special mention goes to Chairman and His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who joins us here today. Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of the European summer calendar, and Irish-trained horses have added so much to the success of the royal meeting over the years. This is our 6th year in partnership with Royal Ascot and we are looking forward to the summer showpiece in just a few weeks’ time.
As well as top-class racing today, we also have lots of kids and family entertainment throughout the day. Make sure to bring the kids down to the playground area where there is free face painting, bouncy castles, petting farm and lots more to keep them entertained.
Our Panoramic Restaurant is fully booked today and we hope all our guests enjoy their day. A big welcome goes to all the guests with Kilashee who are here for their annual fundraiser. While the restaurant might be fully booked, we have plenty of catering options available at our café on the Grandstand ground floor and The Post self-service restaurant near the parade ring. Our caterers, Lily & Wild, also have a BBQ in the enclosure. Public bars are located in The Circle building on the ground floor and the ground floor of the Grandstand.
Looking ahead, our Summer Racing, BBQ & Music evenings are fast approaching, and we have another great lineup in store starting with After Dark playing after racing on Wednesday, 25th June. These are the perfect evenings for a family or friends get together or a corporate night out so visit www.naasracecourse.com to book your discounted admission tickets prior to the event.
If you require any assistance during your visit today, please don’t hesitate to approach a member of our staff or visit our Race Day office located next to the entrance stiles, and they will be happy to assist you.
Enjoy the racing and have a safe journey home. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Next race meeting
Wednesday 25th June 2025 (E)
At every meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the well-being of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A secondary veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horse requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

RACE VERDICT
It was hard not to be impressed by the manner of the well-regarded CHARLES DARWIN’s all the way win at Navan and he showed enough speed there to suggest the drop back to 5f here should not inconvenience him. Spring Is Here was pitched in at the deep end on debut at the Curragh but emerged with real credit and she should make a race of it. The expensive breeze-up purchase Cardiff By The Sea and Jack The Bachelor make most appeal on paper of the newcomers. [Dave Stephens] Source: Racing Post

Owenstown Stud
Frank Tuthill, respected amateur rider and Turf Club judge, acquired Owenstown Stud, Maynooth in 1926. His astute knowledge of pedigrees led him to produce no fewer than seven classic winners: Musidora (1949 1000 Guineas and Oaks); Cavan (1958 Belmont Stakes); Indiana (1964 St Leger); and Humble Duty (1970 1000 Guineas); with half-brothers Barclay and Christmas Island winning the Irish St Leger in 1959 and 1963 respectively.
A long time supporter of Naas Racecourse, Frank’s daughter Averil and her husband Captain Bill Whitehead built a reputation for producing strong, resilient racehorses from their Broadfield Stud outside Naas. Indian Ridge was undoubtedly the best of their winners - a dual Royal Ascot winner and sire of 10 Group 1 winners. Mrs Whitehead continued and oversaw Frank’s legacy at Owenstown from his death in 1988 until her own in February 2010.
Frank’s grandson John, with his wife Clare, took over the running of Owenstown in 1997. Regarded as an insightful commercial breeder, John Tuthill’s stock regularly fetch notable prices at the top European sales and garner further respect on the track as tough, resilient racehorses. Owenstown bred Choose Me (Dark Angel ex Hecuba) won a Naas conditions race in June 2009 in Mrs Whitehead’s colours before success in the Listed Fairy Bridge Stakes and was placed in numerous Pattern races over the next two seasons. This filly went on to serve as a foundation mare for John, with the successes of her progeny speaking for themselves: Persuasive (Group 1 & Royal Ascot winner); Creative Force (Group 1 & Royal Ascot winner); Tisbutadream (Listed Winner, Group Placed).
Over the past few years Owenstown graduates have made a notable impact across Europe, particularly on British Champions Day. Persuasive (Dark Angel ex Choose Me) was winner of the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2017, in addition to being multiple Group 1 placed. Excelebration (Exceed And Excel ex Sun Shower) was another Owenstown graduate to win the QEII in 2012. He was also a winner of the Group 1 Prix de Moulin and the German 2000 Guineas before taking up stallion duties. More recently, Creative Force (Dubawi ex Choose Me) won the Group 1 Champions Sprint Stakes in 2021, another with multiple Group 1 placings. While regular top-level performer, Art Power (Dark Angel ex Evening Time) won the most recent renewal of the British Champions Sprint Stakes in 2023.
Other Owenstown representatives to have made a significant impression include: Chandlery (Group 2 Superlative Stakes winner), Dragon Pulse (Group 2 Futurity Stakes winner and 2nd in the Group 1 National Stakes) and Penny Pepper (Group 3 winner) . Group 1 winners Gordon Lord Byron and Supremacy were also raised at Owenstown Stud.

RACE VERDICT
No member of this field has a rating in three-figures, so this is not an intimidating task for the maiden COPACABANA SANDS who managed to show promise in a Group 3 race at Leopardstown despite meeting trouble in running. In an open contest, One Smack Mac, Dance Night Andday and Tina’s Indian can compete for a share of the money. [Alan Sweetman Source: Racing Post

An intriguing heat. If MAGNUM FORCE is fit for his seasonal reappearance he should be up to winning this on ground he will relish. The returning Bucanero Fuerte was a top-class juvenile but whether he retains that level of ability remains to be seen, so the consistent Powerful Nation could prove to be the biggest danger.
