SELECTION: ROYAL HOLLOW
One of only two rides for Paul Townend on the card, WHERE’S MY JET can make a winning start over hurdles. Likely candidates for the placings include Bridgehead, Point Gellibrand and Crooked Tannie, while Intense Approach is surely capable of better over hurdles and hurdling debutante Royal Hollow could prove dangerous getting all the allowances. It is with great sadness that the Bellewstown Race Committee learned of the passing last Sunday of our dear friend, and former Chairman Mr. Jim Corcoran, formerly of Stameen, Drogheda and Bernard Corcoran Ltd, Dyer St., Drogheda, Co. Louth. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Jim’s daughter Averill, son-inlaw Craig, grandchildren Ava and Callan, and the wider Corcoran and Reddan families, and many friends.
Jim’s final day of horseracing on the Hill was Wednesday April 24th, and the following morning his beloved wife Mabel left us. Mabel was always by Jim’s side and a regular on the Hill of Crockafotha. Jim and Mabel were part of the Bellewstown family, and we will miss them both dearly; but we know they are now reunited in eternal happiness.
Jim Corcoran was the voice and face of Bellewstown racecourse for decades. Jim served Bellewstown Racecourse with great distinction for over 20 years on the organising committee, and for seventeen years as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
During his time the racecourse went from strength to strength. Some of the many notable achievements overseen by Jim during his tenure included the growth in the number of fixtures from three to nine; the extensive cambering of the West Bend, the Purchase of two innovative Briggs watering machines; the Construction of the new Entrance & Administration Building, and most recently the construction of one hundred permanent Horse Stables in 2020.
Jim & Mabel will be sadly missed by all their many friends at Bellewstown Racecourse and throughout the wider Irish Horse racing community.

Consistency may be rewarded here for SLIM MARVEL, who had the misfortune to come up against a decent sort when a clear second at Wexford last time. At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race.
The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
John O’Hagan became a director of Bellewstown Race Committee on 23rd September, 2008, having served as a committee member for some time prior to that. John’s late father Desmond, had been a director for over twenty two years from 1978.
While John was deeply involved in the Judiciary and also in Military Matters, he also managed to devote time, very generously, to Bellewstown Racecourse.
Following his retirement, from his position as a Judge in 2017, he gave plenty of time to the race committee - both on race days as well as at various other times throughout the year. He derived great satisfaction from this.
Indeed, John along with our former chairman the late Jim Corcoran, were hugely instrumental in making race days on The Hill run so smoothly.
John played an active role in a lot of the progress made here at Bellewstown Racecourse over the past few years. He was always available to help and was invaluable to the committee with his brilliant mind - often coming up with a solution to a problem that did not appear possible.
John was a great friend to all who knew him, he is and will continue to be sadly missed here on the Hill of Crocafotha.
John passed away on 23rd March, 2024.
