How to Help Recent Natural Disaster Victims By Ash ley Hurricane Harvey hit Texas on August 25th as a Category 4 storm. It caused $180 billion in damage, coming second place in the largest damage estimates from any other natural disaster (coming after Hurricane Katrina in 2005). It affected a total of 13 million people, most of which in Texas. I live in Houston (one of the cities with the most damage), so I got to experience all the flooding and news coverage that was 24/ 7 in my house for a week. Our first two weeks of school were cancelled due to this massive hurricane. We also had tornadoes very near to our house ? that never happens in Houston. At the storm?s peak on September 1st, 1/ 3 of Houston was underwater. Between 25-30% of Houston?s Harris County was flooded - that?s an area as large as New York City and Chicago combined and home to 4.5 million people. Some areas hit 50 inches of rain from this storm. After a few days, the storm continued onto Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. This could result in a few months of recovery efforts for the affected areas. Hurricane Irma made landfall over Florida on September 10th as a Category 3 storm. It caused severe damage, flooded coastal cities, and knocked out power to more than 6.8 million people. Over the course of the storm, it went through the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. At its peak, the storm had been categorized as a Category 5 Hurricane but lost its high status shortly after. The maximum wind speed reached 185 mph.

The damage estimate is up to $100 billion. The International Red Cross, during the storm, said 1.2 million people have already been affected by Irma ? a number that could rise up to 26 million. Like the victims of Hurricane Harvey, the debris caused from Hurricane Irma could be piled up for months. Both of these natural disasters have affected such a large amount of people. If you are able to, please donate to any of the sites listed below to help out those who were severely affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Anything helps and these affected areas will be needing so much support through the next few months in order to get their lives back to normal.
