n the public schools, this is called the “school report card.” The name report card implies just what one might find inside: grades and attendance. After standardized test scores are collected and attendance is taken, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) will use these quantitative measures and report back to the public school districts whether or not each individual school met or did not meet Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). In the independent schools this process is “accreditation.” Quest Academy is accredited through the Independent Schools Association of the Central States or ISACS. The accreditation is an intensive and comprehensive look into how well the school is fulfilling its mission and programs. The unique and highly regarded qualities of an independent school are all part of the accreditation process. It is not about student test scores and attendance. It is all about analyzing how well we deliver the Quest Academy mission and programs. The accreditation is a process that culminates with the highest level of scrutiny: peer review. The concept of “peer review” is the hallmark of science, however, “peer review” is used in many fields to ensure quality in that industry. Accreditation is qualiContinued on page 6

The Quest - Fall 2012
ALUMNI PROFILE
Meet Elisa Montalvo Quest Academy Class of ‘03 “Quest provided a flexible, tolerant and stimulating learning environment for me—a female-math-dorkartist who was almost two years younger than most students in the grade.” The classroom was a sacred space that encouraged creativity and rigor in communicating understanding. I don’t remember the project content, but one example was in 7th grade Language Arts where we were given the freedom to demonstrate understanding of the subject matter in any medium. We could do the standard- write a paper, present a power point, explain a poster board- though one drew a complete comic book, others wrote and performed a song and someone even made a flash movie. I remember this project as a clear lesson in how ideas can be communicated effectively in many ways and how sometimes the most compelling methods require a bit of creativity and are as valid as what is considered “standard.” Elisa Montalvo is a choreographer, dancer and quant who has been living and working in China for the past two years. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Chicago, Elisa worked on a project at an options trading start up company, where she developed models/strategies on how to trade gold using gold options as well as other benchmarks. Shortly after the project was completed, she was invited to choreograph and perform in China for six months. After finding her niche in Shanghai, Elisa decided to stay.

The Quest - Fall 2014
Thanks to nearly 100 donors at our Night of All Knights Auction & Gala last spring, over $110,000 was raised for our Spot Auction 2014: Re-Imagine, Re-Design, Re-Create: Tomorrow’s Learning Environment Today. This project was inspired by last year’s transformation of our Technology Classroom to what is now our cutting edge Innovation Lab, which was also made possible by the generosity of Spot Auction donors. The funds raised this year were put to immediate use with the installation of LED lighting in the spring, while dry walling, painting and the installation of new carpet were accomplished throughout the summer weeks, and the flexible student furnishings and storage solutions were installed just before the new school year started. In brief, every homeroom classroom was transformed and every student has benefited from this extensive project! Please know that our aged student desks, etc. have new homes with St. Matthias Elementary School in Chicago and Bernice Childs Elementary School in Robbins, Illinois - a win-win for all of us. Lastly, all Spot Auction donors will be recognized on a plaque to be displayed following our 2015 Night of All Knights Auction & Gala, as we hope to be able to finish what we started and transform our remaining classrooms and public spaces. Thanks again to all donors who contributed to our more flexible, playful and vibrant looking school!

During her quantitative four years at U of C, Elisa frequently ventured downtown Chicago to simultaneously pursue her dance career. Elisa’s professional dance credits from 2007-2011 include performances with Beyoncé for Oprah’s Farewell Spectacular, Jennifer Hudson- American Idol winner, Aubrey O’Day from Danity Kane and choreographing for and performing with the Black Eyed Peas for the viral “I Gotta’ Feeling” flash mob.
