Q

ué Pasa conversó con Alan Benchoam para que nos contara más acerca de cómo nace su amor por la fotografía y su proyecto titulado Doors of the Worlds (Puertas de los Mundos).

¿Cómo se dio cuenta que quería dedicarse a la fotografía?

En mi último año de psicología, tomé unos cursos libres de publicidad donde tomé un curso de foto y ahí fue donde me enganchó la fotografía – de todo lo que hace en el mundo de la fotografía. ¿Qué es lo que más lo llena?

Ver el resultado que uno esperaba cuando visualizo una foto. Ahora pues, también me llena el saber que una foto está ayudando a educar a niños y, por ende, a mejorar el país. ¿Cuál ha sido el reto más grande en su carrera fotográfica?

Educar a los clientes y tratar de convencerlos de por qué hay que invertir en una buena foto. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de Doors of the Worlds?

Desde hace años, miraba en la casa de un primo un póster de la ciudad de Jerusalén hecha con la técnica de ensamblaje – me fascinaba verlo. En diciembre, tenía que dar unos regalos, y teniendo tantas fotos de puertas y un libro de puertas, decidí hacer unas pruebas de puertas en ensamblaje 3D. Las hice y gustaron mucho – tanto a los que recibieron los regalos como a mi persona – y empecé a hacer más, y así nació el proyecto.

Limonada [un asentamiento urbano de pobreza extrema en la Ciudad de Guatemala], ya que en mi visión, creo que cuando ayudas o educas a alguien, se abren puertas de oportunidades para todas estas personas. Y al tener nuevas oportunidades, los mundos de todas estas personas cambiarán. Por eso el nombre Doors of the Worlds (y “mundos” está en plural no por error). ¿Cuántas puertas, hasta el momento, forman parte de Doors of the Worlds?

He estado tomando fotos de puertas desde 1993 – ya por 22 años. En mi libro Pase Adelante se recorre Guatemala a través de más de 200 puertas. En total, tengo unas 1,300 puertas de Guatemala, y ¡llegamos ya casi a 60 montadas en relieve!

Después de dar clases, de hacer fotos, de publicar libros de fotografía – y de Doors of the Worlds – ¿qué viene?

Más libros y más puertas. Quiero enfocarme en mis proyectos y sueños y no trabajar en los sueños y proyectos de los demás. Creo que hay muchos libros más qué hacer y muchas puertas más que tomar. Las puertas las miro como un producto nuevo artístico/artesanal, y quiero ver de moverlas fuera de Guatemala.

Siempre hacemos esta pregunta a las personalidades que entrevistamos: ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de La Antigua?

Todo – las vistas, los paisajes, las calles, la comida... y las puertas.

ué Pasa spoke with Alan Benchoam, and he told us about how his love of photography came to be, as well as about his project entitled Doors of the Worlds.

How did you realize that you wanted to devote yourself to photography?

In my last year of studying psychology, I took some open courses about advertising including a photo course, and that’s where I got hooked – on everything about the world of photography.

What brings you the greatest fulfillment?

Seeing the results that you’d hoped for, when you had visualized a photo. Now, I also feel fulfilled knowing that a photo is helping to educate children and, thus, is helping to improve the country.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career as a photographer?

Educating clients and trying to convince them about why they should invest in a good photo.

How did the idea for Doors of the Worlds come about?

Over the years, at the house of one of my cousins, I used to see a poster of the city of Jerusalem that was made with the assemblage technique – I was fascinated by it. Last December, I needed to give some gifts, and having so many pictures of doors and a book of doors, I decided to do some tests of doors in 3D assemblage technique. I made them and they were a hit, really liked by the recipients as well as by me, and so we started doing more, and the project was born.

A percentage of the sales goes to schools in La Limonada [an extremely poor urban settlement in Guatemala City], because in my view, I think that when you help or educate someone, doors of opportunity open for all these people. And by having new opportunities, these people’s worlds will change. Thus the name Doors of the Worlds (and “worlds” is plural on purpose).

So far, how many doors are part of Doors of the Worlds?

I’ve been taking pictures of doors since 1993 – for 22 years now. In my book Pase adelante you can get to know Guatemala through more than 200 doors. In total, I’ve got about 1,300 doors of Guatemala, and we’re almost at 60 mounted in relief!

After teaching, taking pictures, publishing photography books – and Doors of the Worlds – what’s next?

More books and more doors. I want to focus on my projects and dreams and not work on the dreams and projects of others. I think there are many more books to make and many doors to shoot. I look on the doors as a new artistic/artisanal product, and I want to see them move outside of Guatemala.

We always ask this question of the personalities we interview: What do you like best about La Antigua?

Everything – the views, the landscapes, the streets, the food... and the doors.

Entre la Espada y la Pared Between a Rock and a Hard Place Saludos otra vez, mis Fieles Lectores.

Mucho ha pasado desde mi última columna. Púchica, mucho ha sucedido en los últimos cinco meses – tanto que resulta difícil mantenerme al día. Si sigue así, puede que tenga que empezar a prestar más atención y dejar mi vida de huevón. Pero aquí está un resumen rápido.

Otto renunció. Después de meses de protestas populares, el 2 de septiembre, el presidente (ahora ex-presidente) Otto Pérez Molina fue despojado de su inmunidad judicial por el Congreso. Renunció al día siguiente y fue encarcelado en espera de su juicio por corrupción. El vicepresidente nuevecito, Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre (quien había sido nombrado a la vicepresidencia después de que Roxana Baldetti también fuera arrestada por corrupción) se convirtió en el nuevo presidente y servirá el resto del mandato del Otto (que termina el próximo 14 de enero). El Sr. Maldonado hizo campaña para la presidencia en 1982, pero no tuvo éxito. Ahora 33 años después, por fin llegó a la Casa Presidencial. Pero curiosamente, el país ahora cuenta con un mandatario sin mandato; no fue electo popularmente en lo absoluto – ni como presidente ni como vicepresidente. (No hay suficiente espacio en esta

columna para entrar en todos los detalles, pero el presidente Maldonado tampoco tiene un historial impecablemente limpio. Hay acusaciones en su contra de haber estado involucrado con escuadrones de la muerte durante el conflicto interno, y además, como juez en la Corte Constitucional, en 2013 ayudó a anular la condena de genocidio contra el ex-dictador Efraín Ríos Montt.)

También tenemos un nuevo Vicepresidente. (Eso significa que Guatemala ha tenido ¡tres vicepresidentes y dos presidentes en los últimos seis meses!) Después de cinco rondas de votación en el Congreso, al Dr. Juan Alfonso Fuentes se le confirmó como el más reciente vice. Es un dentista de profesión y exrector de la Universidad de San Carlos. Esta administración solo estará en el cargo durante poco más de 4 meses, y no se espera mucho, aunque la reforma a la Ley de Elecciones y de Partidos Políticos todavía está siendo demandada por gran parte de la población (y todavía está siendo resistida por el Congreso, porque los diputados tienen un interés atrincherado en el statu quo).

Mientras el Otto languidece en la cárcel, la Roxy parece haber encontrado una manera de ahorrarse la indignidad de ser tratada como criminal: “se enfermó”. Logró conseguir un traslado a un hospital – que, sin

duda, es más cómodo que una celda de prisión. (Aunque hay informes de que las condiciones del encarcelamiento tanto del Otto como de la Roxy son muy superiores a las de los presos comunes, incluyendo – se alega – suites con TVs de pantalla ancha, muebles nuevos, y casi todas las comodidades modernas que uno podría pedir.)

En medio de todo este lío, se llevó a cabo la primera ronda de las elecciones nacionales. ¡Yipi! ¡Más drama!

Manuel Baldizón – quien había estado haciendo campaña para la presidencia prácticamente sin parar desde que terminó en el segundo lugar en las elecciones de 2011 – recibió el susto de su vida cuando esta vez terminó en el tercer lugar.

Esto rompió el patrón (que se había mantenido desde mediados de los ′80) de que el candidato del segundo lugar sería electo a la presidencia en la siguiente elección. Baldizón arrojó un berrinche, declaró que las elecciones fueron fraudulentas (hmmm... ¿porque no ganó?), renunció al partido político que había fundado hace años, y desapareció de nuevo en las selvas de su departamento de Petén. (Si esto fuera una película de acción de Hollywood, estaría escondido en su Fortaleza de la Travesura®, construyendo un rayo de la muerte y conspirando para apoderarse del mundo y

Greetings once again, my Faithful Readers.

Much has happened since my last column. Hell, much has happened over the past five months – so much so that I’m finding it hard to keep up. If this continues, I may actually have to start paying closer attention and curtail my wastrel ways. But here’s a quick summary.

Otto resigned. After months of popular protests, on September 2nd, President (now Ex-President) Otto Pérez Molina was stripped of his immunity from prosecution by Congress. He resigned the next day and was jailed to await trial for corruption. The new-ish Vice President, Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre (who had been appointed to the vice-presidency after Roxana Baldetti was arrested for corruption) became the new President and will serve out the remainder of Otto’s term in office (which is due to end this coming January 14th). Mr. Maldonado campaigned for the presidency back in 1982, but was unsuccessful. Now 33 years later, he’s finally made it to the Presidential Palace.

But interestingly, the country now has a chief executive who was not elected at all – neither as President nor as Vice President.

(There’s not enough space in this column to go into all the details, but President Maldonado does not have a sterling record, either. There are allegations against him of his being involved with death squads during the Civil War, and also, as a judge on the Constitutional Court, in 2013 he helped annul the conviction of genocide against former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt.)

We also have a new Vice President.

(That means that Guatemala has had three Vice Presidents and two Presidents in the last six months!) After five rounds of voting in Congress, Dr. Juan Alfonso Fuentes was

causar estragos a sus enemigos.

Francamente, no me sorprendería para nada si eso fuera exactamente lo que está haciendo en este momento.)

Los dos finalistas de la elección para presidente son Sandra Torres – la ex primera dama quien se divorció de su marido en un esfuerzo para calificar para la presidencia hace cuatro años (los tribunales dijeron que no era elegible) y de quien muchos creen estaba involucrada con la corrupción organizada durante la administración de su exmarido – y Jimmy Morales – un “comediante” (cuya obra incluye algunas parodias y personajes bastante racistas) y outsider político quien es visto en algunos sectores como un testaferro de una cábala nefasta de tipos militares en las sombras. Debido a que ninguno de estos dos individuos estelares ganó más del 50% de los votos (que es un poquito difícil de hacer cuando hay 14 candidatos), habrá una segunda vuelta el 25 de octubre. Así que la propaganda de campaña continuará hasta finales del mes. A la gran...

Acá en la Ciudad de las Perpetuas Rosas, por fin tenemos un edil elegido (al menos uno que no está encarcelado). La Arquitecta y Urbanista Susana

Asencio ganó las elecciones locales (de un campo de 15 competidores) y será nuestra nueva alcaldesa a partir de enero. Esta es una oportunidad para pasar la página de los escándalos, la mala gestión y la pura ineptitud de los últimos años, y creo que puedo hablar por todos los antigüeños cuando digo que estamos cautelosamente esperanzados de que la nueva alcaldesa traerá algo de la muy necesaria profesionalidad (y un poco de perspectiva adquirida a través de su formación y trabajo profesional en el extranjero) de cómo gestionar y mantener nuestra bella ciudad. La Antigua es una joya colonial, y es la cara que Guatemala muestra al mundo; su encanto y patrimonio merecen ser preservados sin dejar de ser una ciudad viva y vibrante.

Ojalá que la Sra. Asencio esté verdaderamente preparada para los desafíos que enfrentará empezando en enero y que sea capaz de ayudar a restaurar nuestra querida La Antigua para que sea el próspero y hermoso lugar que puede y debe ser. ¡Buena suerte, Susy!

confirmed as the most recent Veep.

He’s a dentist by profession and a former Rector of the University of San Carlos. This placeholder administration will only be in office for a little over 4 months, and is not expected to do much, although a reform of the Elections and Political Parties Law is still being demanded by much of the populace (and is still being resisted by Congress, whose members have an entrenched interest in the status quo).

While Otto languishes in jail, Roxy seems to have figured out a way to spare herself the indignity of being treated like a criminal: she became “ill”. She managed to finagle a transfer to a hospital – which, no doubt, is more comfortable than a prison cell. (Although there are reports that the conditions of both Otto’s and Roxy’s imprisonment are far superior to those of the common inmates, including – it’s alleged – “suites” with wide-screen TVs, new furniture, and just about all the modern conveniences one could ask for.)

In the midst of all this mess, the first round of national elections was held. Yay! More drama!

Manuel Baldizón – who’d been campaigning for President pretty much non-stop since coming in second place in the 2011 election – got the shock of his life when he finished in third place this time.

This broke the pattern (that had held since the mid-′80s) of the runner-up being elected to the presidency in the following election.

He threw a hissy fit, claimed that the elections were fraudulent (maybe ′cause he didn’t win?), quit the political party that he had founded years ago, and disappeared back into the jungles of his home, el departamento of Petén. (If this were a Hollywood action movie, he’d be holed up in his Fortress of Mischief®, building a death-ray and plotting to take over the world and wreak havoc on his enemies.

Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that’s exactly what he’s doing right now.)

The top two finishers in the election for President were Sandra Torres – the former First Lady who divorced her husband in an effort to be eligible for the presidency four years ago (the courts said she wasn’t) and who many believe to have been involved with organized corruption during her ex-husband’s administration – and Jimmy Morales – a “comedian” (whose œuvre includes some quite racist skits and characters) and political outsider who is seen in some quarters as a front-man for a nefarious cabal of shadowy military types. Because neither of these stellar individuals won more than 50% of the vote (which is kinda hard to do when there are 14 candidates), there will be a runoff election on October 25th. So the campaign propaganda will continue ‘til the end of the month. Whee...

Here in the City of Perpetual Roses, we finally have an elected mayor (at least one who’s not in jail, that is). Architect and Urban Planner Susana Asencio won the local election (out of a field of 15 competitors) and will be our new alcaldesa starting in January. This is an opportunity to turn the page on the scandals, mismanagement, and sheer ineptitude of the past few years, and I think I can speak for all Antigüeños when I say that we’re cautiously hopeful that the new mayor will bring some much-needed professionalism (and some perspective gained via her education and professional work abroad) to how our fair city is managed and maintained.

La Antigua is a colonial jewel and it’s the face that Guatemala shows to the world; its beauty and heritage deserves to be preserved while remaining a living and vibrant city.

Here’s hoping that Ms. Asencio is truly up to the challenges that will confront her starting in January and that she’ll be able to help restore our beloved La Antigua to the thriving and beautiful place it can and should be.

l Instituto Guatemalteco Americano tiene buenas noticias para los amantes de la ópera. La temporada 2015-2016 de The Met (Live in HD) está por dar inicio, y las transmisiones en directo desde Nueva York se realizarán en el Teatro Dick Smith en el I.G.A. en la Ciudad de Guatemala.

La serie anual de transmisiones de ópera coloca a The Metropolitan Opera como el proveedor líder de contenido cinemático alternativo, y es la única institución de las artes con una continua serie global de esta escala.

Cuando las series dieron inicio en el año 2006, The Met fue la primera organización de las artes en experimentar con emisiones mundiales de alta definición con contenido de este tipo. Desde entonces, el programa ha ido creciendo cada año y cada temporada. Es gracias a programas como este que las audiencias alrededor del mundo tienen acceso a presentaciones de ópera de clase mundial en vivo y en directo.

he Instituto Guatemalteco Americano has good news for opera lovers. The 2015-2016 season of The Met (Live in HD) is about to begin, and the live broadcasts from New York will be shown at the Dick Smith Theater at I.G.A. in Guatemala City.

The annual series of opera broadcasts places The Metropolitan Opera as the leading provider of alternative cinematic content, and it’s the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale.

When the series began in 2006, The Met was the first arts organization to experiment with worldwide high definition broadcasts of such content. Since then, the program has grown each season. Thanks to programs like this, audiences around the world have access to live performances of world-class opera.

Stars of The Met act as hosts for the HD series, conducting live cast interviews, providing information about the individual productions, and revealing to the viewers the secrets of what happens backstage.

The season begins on Saturday, October 3rd with Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore at 10:55 AM; it continues with a performance of Verdi’s Otello on Saturday, October 17th at 10:55 AM; and proceeds with Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner on Saturday, October 31st at 10 AM.

untoPhoto is one of the photography groups in Guatemala that’s gaining momentum. It’s a virtual meeting place for photographers who want to share their experiences and work, as well as to address their concerns.

Among its other activities, the group holds competitions in order to help members of the group continue their photographic learning and growth. These competitions have a defined theme and a guest judge in charge of choosing three winners.

In the first of their contests, the guest judge was Marko Korosek, renowned photographer and first-place winner of the National Geographic Traveler Photo contest in the category “Outdoor Scenes”.

The theme of PuntoPhoto’s competition was “The Power of Nature” and Qué Pasa presents the winners.

Dirigida por Jayro Bustamante y protagonizada por María Telón y María Mercedes Coroy, esta cinta – además de los muchos reconocimientos a los que se ha hecho acreedora – es una de las competidoras por el Academy Award® a Mejor Película Extranjera, la primera vez que una película guatemalteca ha competido por un Oscar®.

La historia relata la vida de María, quien vive en las faldas de un volcán, alejada del mundo moderno y añorando conocer más allá de lo que hasta el momento ha visto. Directed by Jayro Bustamante and starring María Telón and María Mercedes Coroy, this film – in addition to the many accolades that it has already won – is one of the competitors for the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film, the first time a film from Guatemala has competed for an Oscar®.

The story chronicles the life of María, a young woman who lives away from the modern world on the slopes of a volcano and who longs to know what’s out there, beyond what she has seen so far in her life. With beautiful photography and spectacular performances, the film opens a window to the daily life of many families in Guatemala. Certainly, this first feature-length fiction film by cinematographer Jayro Bustamante is a jewel for movie lovers as well as for those who seek, through cinema, to learn about the world.

40 Años de los Sabores de Guatemala

E

ste 1º de octubre se celebran los 40 años de la primera Fonda de la Calle Real. Son muchísimos años de brindar a antigüeños y visitantes lo mejor de los sabores tradicionales de Guatemala y sus ricos platos al carbón, y es ciertamente un motivo de celebración.

La primera Fonda, ubicada en la Calle del Arco (y hoy en día conocida como “La Fondita”), dio inicio con tan solo seis mesas y un ambiente único. Es aquí donde nació el primer “Caldo Real” y los quesos fundidos que la hicieron famosa. El sabor y la calidad de los platillos que se servían hicieron que el número de clientes que la frecuentaban aumentara, y fue así como se dio la necesidad de crear una segunda Fonda.

Esta segunda Fonda llegó en mediados de diciembre de 1991, y hoy en día es conocida como la Fonda de “A La Vuelta” – ubicada en la 3a Calle Poniente #7.

En abril del año 2000 llegó la tercera Fonda, ubicada frente a la primera, para consolidar tres espacios únicos en los cuales satisfacerse con sabores de las distintas regiones de Guatemala que – de la mano de las Fondas – han deleitado a grandes personalidades nacionales e internacionales y a todos los chapines y extranjeros que buscan consentir su paladar.

Durante todos estos años, en que sus creadores y administradores han hecho de las Fondas un lugar idóneo para la familia y amigos, también se han tomado el tiempo para promover la grandeza no solo de la gastronomía exquisita de Guatemala, sino también del patrimonio cultural excepcional del país.

Es, pues, con gran gusto que celebramos hoy – junto con todo el equipo de las distintas Fondas de la Calle Real – su presencia en La Antigua y la forma en que, con sabor y esmero, han llenado nuestras vidas por 40 años de colores, sabores, aromas e historia… todo con platos orgullosamente guatemaltecos. ¡Muchas felicidades a la Fonda de la Calle Real de La Antigua!

his October 1st marks the 40th anniversary of the first La Fonda de la Calle Real. That’s a lot of years of providing the best of Guatemala’s traditional grilled flavors to Antigüeños and visitors alike, and it’s certainly a cause for celebration.

The first La Fonda, located on the Calle del Arco (and today known as “La Fondita”), began with just six tables and a unique atmosphere.

This is where La Fonda’s famous “Caldo Real” and cheese fondues were first served – two dishes that helped make the restaurant famous.

The flavor and quality of the food began to attract more and more customers, and eventually there was a need for a second La Fonda.

This second location arrived in mid-December 1991, and today it’s known as la Fonda de “A La Vuelta” (La Fonda around the corner) – located at 3a Calle Poniente #7. In April 2000 the third La Fonda arrived, just across the street from the first one. This brought the total to three unique spaces where the flavors from Guatemala’s different regions – with that special La Fonda touch – have delighted national and international personalities, as well as Guatemalans and visitors who want their palates pampered.

During all these years that its creators and administrators have made each La Fonda an ideal place for family and friends, they have also taken the time to promote the greatness not only of Guatemala’s exquisite cuisine but also of the country’s exceptional cultural heritage.

It is therefore with great pleasure that we – along with the staff of each of the different La Fonda de la Calle Real locations – celebrate their presence in La Antigua and the way, with taste and care, that day have filled our lives for forty years with colors, flavors, aromas, and history... all in proudly Guatemalan dishes.

as vitaminas son miembros de un grupo de sustancias que contribuyen al funcionamiento celular, al desarrollo y crecimiento normal del cuerpo y a la salud en general.

Catalogadas utilizando letras del alfabeto, existen 13 vitaminas esenciales para que el cuerpo funcione adecuadamente.

Las vitaminas se agrupan en dos categorías que variarán en el tiempo de almacenamiento y su utilización en el cuerpo.

Las vitaminas liposolubles son almacenadas en el tejido graso del cuerpo. A este grupo pertenecen las vitaminas A, D, E y K. Las vitaminas hidrosolubles son aquellas que deben ser ingeridas, y son utilizadas inmediatamente por el cuerpo. A este grupo pertenecen la vitamina C y todas las vitaminas B (B1, B6, B12, etc.). Porque no pueden almacenarse en el cuerpo, cualquier sobrante de estas vitaminas será expulsado por el cuerpo a través de la orina. La única excepción es la vitamina B12 que podrá ser almacenada en el hígado por muchos años.

Las vitaminas son vitales para el buen funcionamiento del cuerpo, y de hecho, sin las vitaminas la vida misma sería imposible. A continuación se muestran algunas de sus funciones.

Comúnmente se menciona a la vitamina C como el aliado contra los resfríos; sin embargo, el papel principal de esta vitamina es de favorecer la absorción del hierro en el cuerpo, conservar tejidos saludables y ayudar con mantener las encías y los dientes sanos.

La vitamina D a veces es conocida como “la vitamina del sol”.

Esta vitamina se produce en el cuerpo después de estar expuesto a la luz solar. e acuerdo a la Academia Americana de Dermatología, las células envejecidas de la piel producen cantidades excesivas de radicales libres (moléculas de oxígeno en forma inestable). En circunstancias ideales, los radicales libres son removidos por antioxidantes naturales de las células, pero las células viejas poseen menos reservas de antioxidantes, dejando radicales libres en la piel. Los radicales libres dañan las membranas celulares, las proteínas y el ADN de la piel, eventualmente degradando el colágeno.

on el dramático incremento en los números de computadoras en oficinas y casas, las quejas acerca de la fatiga y la incomodidad ocular son cada vez más frecuentes.

Los síntomas y molestias causadas en el ojo por las radiaciones emitidas por los monitores determinan el Síndrome de Fatiga Visual por Computadora (también conocido por sus siglas SFVC). Pero este síndrome no es causado únicamente por el monitor en sí, sino también por varias condiciones en el entorno como el prolongado número de horas frente al monitor, la mala iluminación y el uso de lentes con poder inadecuado o prescripción vencida.

El enrojecimiento de los ojos, el ardor, la sensación de tener arena en los ojos, la fácil fatiga, la resequedad y la visión borrosa o doble – además de la alteración en la percepción de colores y el lagrimeo – son signos y síntomas del SFVC. Para poder evitar el SFVC se recomienda un examen con un oftalmólogo de forma anual. Este especialista en el cuidado de los ojos será el encargado de determinar las necesidades y soluciones personalizadas para cada persona.

ith the dramatic increase in the number of computers in the workplace and in homes, complaints about eyestrain and discomfort are becoming more frequent.

Discomfort and eyestrain caused by the radiation emitted by monitors is called Computer Vision Syndrome (known by its acronym CVS). But this syndrome is not caused solely by the monitor itself, but also by various conditions in the environment such as a prolonged number of hours in front of the monitor, bad lighting, and the use of eyeglasses that are not strong enough or that have an expired prescription.

Redness, a burning or gritty sensation, becoming easily fatigued, dryness, and blurred or double vision – along with a change in the perception of colors and excessive tearing – are all signs and symptoms of CVS. To avoid CVS, an annual examination by an ophthalmologist is recommended. This eye-care specialist will be responsible for identifying the needs and then customizing the solutions for each person.

Las Mujeres de Ixcanul The Women

M

aría Telón Roj viuda de Pío ha pasado la mayor parte de sus 43 años trabajando. Luego de enviudar, la responsabilidad de sacar adelante su hogar ha sido lo que la ha llevado a no dejarse vencer. Es un ave rara en una población que puede ser muy crítica y bastante dura. Ella conoce de cerca lo difícil que puede ser no acoplarse a lo que esperan de uno.

Su amor por actuar la ha llevado a trabajar en varias obras de teatro, un cortometraje y una película. Fue gracias a esta última que Jayro Bustamante la vio. Él la buscó pueblo por pueblo hasta finalmente conocerla frente a la iglesia de Santa María de Jesús, un pueblo en las faldas del Volcán de Agua, muy cerca a La Antigua.

Ixcanul ha sido algo de lo mejor que le ha pasado a María.

Llegó a ella en uno de los momentos en que más lo necesitaba, y cree firmemente que es Dios quien la puso en su camino. Ella

cree que es un mensaje claro del Creador que siempre estará con ella y no va a dejarla sola. Ella dice que siempre va a luchar para salir adelante y cumplir sus sueños, sean estos ver a sus hijos egresados de la escuela o aprender finalmente a manejar.

María no va a dejar de luchar nunca por la gente que ama y por lo que más quiere. De forma muy parecida a la película, María no sabe leer ni escribir, y fue su hijo de 15 años quien le leyó el guion de Ixcanul para que pudiera aprendérselo.

Le gusta viajar. Sus ojos se iluminan cuando cuenta de cómo ha cruzado fronteras más allá de Guatemala – a escondidas de su mamá quien no aprueba de sus “andanzas” en la actuación.

En los ojos de María se lee de sus tristezas y de sus anhelos.

Es una mujer fuerte que ha luchado y seguirá luchando, a pesar de lo que el mundo puede pensar. Más que la fuerza del volcán, está claro que la fuerza interior de María está detrás de Ixcanul.

aría Telón Roj de Pío has spent most of her 43 years working. After being widowed, the responsibility of keeping her household going was what kept her from giving up. She’s a bit of an odd bird in a population that can be very critical and very hard on people who don’t fit in. She knows about how difficult it can be when you don’t do what’s expected of you.

Her love for acting has led her to work in several plays, a short film, and a movie. It was in the movie that Jayro Bustamante saw her. He searched for her town by town until he finally met her face-to-face in front of the church in Santa María de Jesús, a village on the slopes of Volcán de Agua, near La Antigua.

Ixcanul has been one of the best things that has ever happened to María. It came to her at a time when she needed it the most, and she firmly believes that God put it in her path. She believes it’s a clear message from the Creator the He will always be with her and will not abandon her. She says that she’ll always strive to succeed and to realize her dreams, whether that’s seeing her children graduate from school or finally learning to drive.

María will never stop fighting for the people she loves and for what she most desires. Much like in the film, María cannot read or write, and her 15-yearold son read the Ixcanul script to her so she could learn it.

She likes to travel. Her eyes light up when she tells how she’s crossed borders beyond Guatemala – all done behind her mother’s back, because her mother disapproves of her acting “adventures.”

María’s sorrows and yearnings can be read in her eyes. She’s a strong woman who has fought and will continue to fight in spite of what the world may think.

More than the power of the volcano, it’s clear that María’s inner strength is behind Ixcanul.

aría Mercedes Coroy es aparentemente reservada y callada. En Ixcanul muestra un alma vieja y a una curiosidad innata. A veces la ficción es un reflejo de la realidad. Le gusta todo lo que tiene que ver con la actuación y cree que es un arma poderosa que puede ayudarla a que su pueblo – Santa María de Jesús – salga adelante.

Casi se perdió de participar en la película porque no se había enterado del casting del director Jayro Bustamante a pleno Parque Central de Santa María de Jesús. Pero sí logró llegar gracias al aviso de un amigo.

En el mundo de María Mercedes – por su corta edad y a las expectativas que tienen de ella (incluyendo las de los habitantes del pueblo) – tener una red sólida de apoyo es importante. Es afortunada de contar con gente como su hermana Marta Lidia y sus amigos Antonio Ortiz y Luis Rodríguez quienes la animan y apoyan en cada paso de lo que hace.

El antes y después de Ixcanul no ha sido fácil. Vivir en Santa María es vivir cerca del volcán, y te aleja un poco del resto del mundo. Es un lugar muy familiar y a la vez tan distinto – o se sintió así cuando, luego de su participación en la película, intentaron entrarse a robar a su casa tres veces.

La educación es parte importante de su vida y quiere finalmente terminar la escuela mientras encuentra más proyectos de actuación en los cuales involucrarse. No quiere dejar nunca de actuar.

Ixcanul representó muchos retos personales. Al igual que con su compañera María Telón, una parte de María Mercedes encuentra similitudes con su personaje. Otra parte tuvo que respirar profundo y representar su papel a pesar de sus temores y conflictos. En sus palabras: “Había que filmar las escenas. Para mí, no hay ‘peros’ que valgan”.

Una de sus metas importantes es ser parte del cambio que el país necesita. Tiene grandes planes para poder ver una Guatemala distinta. Durante los viajes que realizó (a los festivales de cine en Guadalajara, México; París, Francia; y Berlin, Alemania), pudo observar que el mundo quiere conocer más de Guatemala, y ella va a seguirla presentando.

Ixcanul encendió en María Mercedes la fuerza de luchar por sus sueños y su país.

aría Mercedes Coroy appears to be reserved and quiet. In Ixcanul she displays an old soul and an innate curiosity. Sometimes fiction is a reflection of reality. She likes everything involved with acting and believes it’s a powerful weapon that can help her town – Santa María de Jesús – succeed.

She almost missed the chance to participate in the film because she hadn’t heard about the auditions that director Jayro Bustamante was holding at Parque Central in Santa María de Jesús. But she did manage to attend the auditions, thanks to a friend’s telling her about the opportunity.

In María Mercedes’ world – because of her young age and the expectations put on her (including those of the people in her town) – having a solid support network is important. She’s fortunate to have people like her sister Marta Lidia and her friends Antonio Ortiz and Luis Rodríguez who encourage and support her every step of the way.

The before and after of Ixcanul has not been easy. Living in Santa María is living near the volcano, and it separates you a bit from the rest of the world. It’s a very family-oriented place and yet it’s so different – or at least it felt that way when, after

her participation in the film, someone attempted to rob her house three times.

Education is an important part of her life, and she wants to finally finish school while she finds more acting projects to get involved with. She never wants to stop acting.

Ixcanul represented many personal challenges. As with her costar María Telón, one part of María Mercedes finds similarities with her character. Another part of her had to take a deep breath and play her role, despite her fears and conflicts.

In her words: “The scenes had to be shot. For me, there were no ‘buts’ about it.”

One of her major goals is to be part of the change that the country needs. She has big plans to see a changed Guatemala.

During the trips she took (to film festivals in Guadalajara, Mexico; Paris, France; and Berlin, Germany), she was able to see that the world wants to know more about Guatemala, and she plans to continue to show all about it.

Ixcanul lit a fire of strength in María Mercedes to fight for her dreams and for her country.

¡LAVOSI Sigue Creciendo!

primera vista LAVOSI parece una escuela más de Guatemala, al menos si las paredes que son mucho más coloridas y cubiertas con muchos más carteles que lo usual no llaman tu atención.

Está también el asunto del perro que parece tener la funcionalidad de un timbre. Y si lo piensas bien, durante el tiempo que estés allí algo se percibe en el ambiente; algo es distinto.

Hoy, la emoción es evidente en las caritas alegres de los niños que se dedican a trabajar en los preparativos para participar en un rítmico y bullicioso desfile que celebra a la patria. Es una actividad más que, para muchos, hubiera sido imposible de realizar sin la ayuda de LAVOSI. Los niños y adolescentes – además de muchos de los adultos que son parte de LAVOSI – no pueden oír. Esta institución es el estandarte en Guatemala de la educación para todos aquellos niños con sordera. Para lograr esto, en LAVOSI se utiliza un lenguaje de señas muy chapín que les permite a los niños comunicarse – incluso con sus propias familias. Este lenguaje también les ayuda a construir y reforzar sus propias identidades para poder desarrollarse en un mundo que, por mucho tiempo, les parecío ser poco comunicativo.

LAVOSI significa “Las Voces del Silencio” y comenzó en el 2009 con el sueño de “los Álvaros” – un equipo de padre e hijo, ambos llamado Álvaro – por hacer la diferencia en el sistema educativo para aquellos que no pueden oír. Para inicios del 2010 LAVOSI abrió sus puertas, y desde entonces no se han detenido. El éxito del programa ha hecho que las instalaciones crezcan hasta tener que mudarse a un lugar que pueda acomodarlos, y como consecuencia, los gastos y las necesidades han crecido. Así, cualquier ayuda que se pueda brindar es bienvenida.

Lo que sí se puede decir es que luego de pasar un día en este lugar, te darás cuenta que hace una diferencia en ti. El ambiente, el amor y la entrega de todos los que luchan por mejorar la vida de los niños se quedarán contigo para siempre.

t first glance LAVOSI looks like just another school in Guatemala, at least until you notice that the walls are much more colorful and covered with many more posters than at most schools. There’s also a dog that seems to act as a doorbell. And during your time here, you’ll notice that there’s something different, something uncommon about the place.

Today, excitement is unmistakable on the happy faces of the children who are preparing to participate in a lively and rhythmic patriotic parade. It’s yet another activity that, for many of the kids, would have been impossible without the help of LAVOSI. The children and teenagers – as well as many of the adults who are part of LAVOSI – cannot hear. This institution sets the benchmark in Guatemala for education for deaf and hearing-impaired children. In order to achieve this, a very Guatemalan sign language is used at LAVOSI that allows the kids to communicate – even with their own families. This sign language also helps them build and strengthen their own identities in order to grow and flourish in a world that, for a long time, seemed to be very uncommunicative.

LAVOSI stands for “Las Voces del Silencio” (“The Voices of the Silent”) and was begun in 2009 as the dream of “the Álvaros” – a father and son team, both named Álvaro – in order to make a difference in the educational system for those with auditory problems. In early 2010 LAVOSI opened its doors, and since then, the good works haven’t stopped.

The program’s success has meant that the school’s facilities have grown to such an extent that a move to a larger place that could accommodate everyone was necessary, and as a result, costs as well as needs have grown. Any help that can be provided will be welcomed with open arms.

One thing is certain: when you spend a day here, you’ll find that it has made a difference in you. The atmosphere, the love, and the dedication of everyone who strives to improve the lives of these children will stay with you forever.

rente al Convento e Iglesia de las Hermanas Clarisas – hoy el monumento de Santa Clara (MAP E6) – sobre la 2a Avenida Sur y 6a Calle Oriente en La Antigua, existe un espacio verde llamado el Parque La Unión que tiene un punto de encuentro muy pintoresco: la enorme pila pública llamada “Tanque La Unión”. Su color amarillo adorna, envuelve y embellece con el contraste de colores que las lavanderas, en su mayoría mujeres indígenas, llevan en sus huipiles. La escena es la esencia del variopinto paisajista de La Antigua.

El color amarillo da un toque colonial, gracias al aprovechamiento de la luz del sol, aunque hay que destacar que el tanque de agua es una construcción del siglo XIX. En ese entonces, la moda había variado, y ya no se utilizaba el estilo barroco; las construcciones del tanque son del estilo neoclásico, con líneas más simples y mas geométricas – y con una arqueada muy luminosa.

Este lugar ha servido de lavadero de ropa, dado que no todas las casas tenían lugar donde hacerlo. Hoy en día sigue sirviendo para personas que provienen de pueblos relativamente cercanos – como

La construcción aquí se debe a la iniciativa del corregidor José María Palomo y Montúfar, a quien se le debe reconocer el levantamiento de varios monumentos en La Antigua luego que fuera convertida en villa en el año 1813, haciendo reconstrucciones 60 años después del traslado de la capital a la Ciudad de Guatemala y el abandono de La Antigua (que resultó ser solo temporal).

En esta época, no existían parques en los pueblos de Guatemala, sino solo espacios abiertos – utilizados tanto para el comercio como el esparcimiento – conocidos como plazas de reminiscencia española. El concepto de parque eventualmente entró como parte del pensamiento guatemalteco debido a la influencia que tuvo el presidente José María Reina Barrios. En un viaje a París, él vio los más modernos ejemplos del remozamiento de ciudades y de la planificación urbana, y cuando regresó a Guatemala, empezó a remozar los lugares públicos, incluyendo haciendo banquetas para caminar, algo que no existía antes. w w w. q u e pa s a . g t

El lugar donde se construyó este tanque de agua (y su respectiva pila) fue la Plaza de San José, un lugar abierto y algo retirado de la Plaza Central. La inauguración del tanque se celebró el 3 de febrero del año 1853.

El nombre del tanque (y de ahí el del parque que lo rodea) proviene del acto conmemorativo de la victoria de la Batalla de La Arada en el año de 1851 por el gobernante y general guatemalteco Rafael Carrera contra el ejército salvadoreño/ hondureño, no dejando que Guatemala se dividiera. Para el año de 1925, existió un Congreso Unionista de Centroamérica que se llevó a cabo en Guatemala, y en algún momento se realizó una visita a este lugar para conmemorar la batalla, y por eso el nombre de la Plaza de San José fue cambiado a Parque de La Unión, en memoria de la preservación de la unión del país.

Hoy en día, puedes caminar por las banquetas de parque o simplemente sentarte en la grama o una de sus numerosas bancas para disfrutar del ambiente hermoso, tranquilo e histórico de este lugar legendario.

pposite the Church and Convent of the Poor Clare nuns – today, the Santa Clara monument (MAP E6) – at 2a Avenida Sur and 6a Calle Oriente in La Antigua, there’s a green space known as Parque La Unión, which has a picturesque meeting point: the enormous public water cistern and pila called “Tanque La Unión.” Its yellow color contrasts with and embellishes the colors that the indigenous washerwomen sport on their traditional and colorful huipiles. The scene is the very essence of La Antigua’s many and varied cityscapes.

The yellow color gives a colonial touch, taking advantage of the sunlight, although it should be noted that the water tank is a 19th-century construction. At that time, fashion had changed and the Baroque style was no longer used; the tank is of the neoclassical style, with simpler and more geometric lines – and with a light and airy series of arches.

This cistern and pila functioned as a place to wash laundry, as not all houses had somewhere to do so. Today it continues to serve as such for people who come from nearby towns and villages – such as Santa María de Jesús, located on the slopes of Volcán de Agua – where there isn’t much water available.

The construction here is due to the initiative of José María Palomo y Montúfar, the mayor who had several monuments erected in La Antigua after it was named a villa in 1813, with the renovations and reconstructions taking place some 60 years after the capital was moved to Guatemala City and La Antigua was abandoned (which turned out to be only a temporary desertion).

At this time, there were no parks in Guatemala’s cities and towns, but rather only open spaces – used both for commerce and recreation – known in the old Spanish style as plazas. The concept of parks eventually became part of Guatemalan thought due to the influence of president José María Reina Barrios. On a trip to Paris, he saw the latest examples of city beautification and urban planning, and when he returned to Guatemala, he began to renovate public spaces, including installing sidewalks, something that had not existed before in the country.

The space where this water cistern and pila was built was the Plaza de San José, an open area slightly removed from the city center and the central plaza. The tank’s inauguration was held on February 3rd, 1853.

The water tank’s name (and thus the name of the park surrounding it) comes from a commemoration of the victory of the Battle of La Arada in 1851 by Guatemalan president and general Rafael Carrera against the combined El Salvador/Honduras army, which prevented the splitting up of Guatemala. Around 1925, a Central American Unionist Congress was held in Guatemala, and at one point a visit was made here to commemorate the battle. The name of the Plaza de San José was changed to Parque La Unión in remembrance of the preservation of the country’s union.

Today, you can stroll the park’s walkways or just sit on the grass or one of its many benches to enjoy the beautiful, peaceful, and historic atmosphere of this storied place.

Un Día para

l 1º de noviembre Guatemala vive una de sus celebraciones más grandes: el Día de Todos los Santos. Esta celebración a los muertos está – irónicamente – llena de vida y color.

En muchos lugares del país se cree que ese día el inframundo libera todas esas almas que allí habitan, y que por 24 horas los espíritus de los que han fallecido puedan visitar los lugares donde vivieron y a las personas que amaron.

En los días previos al Día de Todos los Santos, se preparan diversos platillos para compartir con familia y amigos luego de visitar el cementerio. Uno de estos platos – el más famoso – es el Fiambre, que tiene un curtido de vegetales como base y diversos cortes de carnes y embutidos como complemento. En algunos pueblos, se llevan los platos al cementerio y se degustan allí, junto a las tumbas de los seres queridos.

Las tumbas usualmente son decoradas con flores de la época y con coronas hechas con pétalos de seda y cubiertos con cera (para que puedan durar más tiempo). Además, algunas personas llevan velas y rosarios para poder rezar un tiempo e iluminar las tumbas aún cuando caiga la noche y tengan que abandonar el cementerio.

En Sumpango y Santiago Sacatepéquez, en el departamento de Sacatepéquez, por más de 100 años se han elevado barriletes gigantes al cielo como una línea directa de comunicación entre lo mortal y lo divino.

Las cofradías y miembros de la población de esos lugares mantienen viva la tradición de comunicarse de esta forma con estos seres quienes habían formado parte de su vida y aquellos de quienes descienden.

En Todos Santos Cuchumatán, un municipio en el departamento de Huehuetenango, se lleva a cabo la famosa Carrera de las Cintas el Día de Todos los Santos. Es una carrera de caballos en la que participan varios jinetes – vistiendo atuendos especiales – y corren por una pista una y otra vez durante todo el día. La tradición dice que los participantes deberán ser parte de la carrera por al menos cuatro años consecutivos. Un dato singular es que, durante la carrera y como parte de la celebración, los pobladores ofrecen bebidas alcohólicas a los jinetes; es muy común que los jinetes siguen compitiendo montados en sus caballos aunque están completamente ebrios (o sea, los jinetes, no los caballos).

Este municipio en las faldas del Volcán de Agua celebra el Día de los Muertos de forma única el día 2 de noviembre. Aunque el primer día de noviembre se celebra el Día de Todos los Santos decorando las tumbas – pintadas de diversos colores – y aquellas cruces de madera que indican el terreno en el cual hay también “santos”, es al día siguiente cuando se celebra el Día de los Muertos en grande. Muchos pasan en vigilia, con comida y bebida suficiente para poder pasar un tiempo con sus muertos hasta ver el segundo día. Con las vistas impresionantes al Valle de Panchoy y sus alrededores (y con los increíbles celajes propios de la época), al ritmo de los mariachis y con algunos de los pobladores uniéndose con sus guitarras – así es como los que han partido son recordados y celebrados.

Sin importar cuál sea el destino de tu visita al inicio de noviembre, va a ser fascinante ver la forma en que los chapines celebran la vida… y la muerte.

n November 1st, Guatemala experiences one of its biggest celebrations: All Saints’ Day. This celebration of the dead is – ironically – full of life and color.

In many parts of the country it’s believed that on this day, those souls who live in the underworld are free to leave, and that for 24 hours, the spirits of the departed are able to visit the places where they lived and the people whom they loved.

In the days leading up to All Saints’ Day, various dishes are prepared to share with family and friends after visiting the cemetery. One of these dishes – the most famous – is Fiambre, which has a base of pickled vegetables along with various cold cuts and sausages. In some villages, the different dishes are taken to the cemetery to be enjoyed there among the graves of loved ones.

The graves are usually decorated with seasonal flowers and with wreaths made of silk flowers coated with wax (so that they’ll last longer). Some people also take candles and rosaries with them to pray and to illuminate the graves after nightfall, even after they have to leave the cemetery.

In Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez, in the department of Sacatepéquez, for over 100 years giant kites have been lifted to the skies as a direct line of communication between the mortal and the divine. Religious fraternities (called cofradías) and other members of these communities keep alive the tradition of using this way of communicating with ancestors and with others who were part of their lives.

In Todos Santos Cuchumatán, a town in the departamento of Huehuetenango, the famous Carrera de las Cintas takes place on All Saints’ Day. It’s a horse race involving several riders – all wearing special outfits – who race their horses along a track, over and over again throughout the day. Tradition says that riders have to participate in the race for at least four consecutive years. One interesting fact is that, during the race and as part of the celebration, the townspeople offer drinks to the riders; it’s quite common for the riders to continue racing their horses while completely drunk (the riders, that is, not the horses).

In La Antigua, it’s common for relatives to clean their family graves and vaults before decorating them, and then to get together with friends to eat outside the gates of the San Lázaro Municipal Cemetery, where there are stalls selling food, traditional sweets, and flowers.

For a different experience, about 20 minutes’ drive from La Antigua is Santa María de Jesús. This town on the slopes of Volcán de Agua celebrates the Day of the Dead on November 2nd. Although All Saints’ Day is celebrated on November 1st by decorating graves – painted different colors – it’s the following day when the big celebration of the Day of the Dead takes place. Many spend the night awake in vigil, with enough food and drink to tide them over so that they can spend two days with their deceased loved ones. With the breathtaking views of the Panchoy Valley and the surrounding area (and with the season’s incredible cloudscapes), to the rhythm of mariachis and other townspeople joining in with their own guitars – this is how those who have passed on are remembered and celebrated.

No matter what your destination is at the beginning of November, you’ll be fascinated to see how Guatemalans celebrate life... and death.

hichicastenango significa “lugar de los chichicastes o de las zarzas” y es considerado el municipio más importante del departamento de El Quiché y una de las ciudades más tradicionales del país. La mayor parte de la población es de etnia K’iche’; sin embargo, gracias a la relevancia que tiene hoy en día su mercado, alberga también a comerciantes de otras áreas y etnias como los Kakchiqueles, los Q’eqchi’ y los Mames. Uno de los más importantes créditos históricos del lugar es que aquí, en o poco después del año 1701, fue encontrado el Popol Vuh por el dominico Fray Francisco Ximénez. Este “Libro del Consejo” fue escrito en la década de 1550 y relata los orígenes de los K’iche’ y así como su cosmovisión. hichicastenango means “Place of the chichicaste plants or brambles,” and it’s considered to be the most important town in the department of El Quiché as well as one of the most traditional cities in the country. odos los hombres hablaban de su belleza, y algunas mujeres la envidiaban. Se le veía caminar a la par de su mamá en el mercado y a la hora de ir por el pan. Todos querían conocer a la hermosa dama; todos querían enamorarla. Por las tardes, la dama abría la ventana del balcón de su casa y se quedaba allí, observando al mundo pasar.

Caminando por la calle donde vivía la dama, un pequeño hombre – vestido completamente de negro con un inmenso sombrero y enormes espuelas de oro en sus brillantes botas – se detuvo a admirarla. Sorprendido por su belleza y sumamente interesado en ella, este hombre bajito tomó su guitarra en mano y empezó a cantarle. Desde ese momento, la pobre señorita nunca más tuvo un minuto de paz.

En los días y semanas que siguieron, ella parecía hechizada e intranquila y no tenía ánimos de comer. Solo la calmaba las serenatas nocturnas del oscuro personaje al que la gente había dado por llamar “El Sombrerón”. Asustados con lo que veían y con los relatos de los vecinos – quienes contaban que el hombrecito cabalgaba a sus mulas durante la madrugada recorriendo la ciudad y que además enamoraba a mujeres con su cantar – los padres de la muchacha buscaron remedio en varias iglesias para lo que parecía un raro enamoramiento. Al ver cómo día a día sus ojos perdían el brillo y no hacía más que suspirar esperando la noche, trataron de llevársela lejos, pero todo resultó imposible.

Pasaron las semanas y aunque El Sombrerón no perdía interés en la muchacha, ella – debilitada por la falta de comida y sueño – cayó enferma y nunca se recuperó. Se dice que durante las noches del velorio, y aún semanas después del entierro, El Sombrerón recorría las calles en las noches, gritando en desconsuelo.

Todos los vecinos pensaron que el hombrecito extraño finalmente se había ido de la ciudad cuando ya no escucharon más sus lamentos en las madrugadas, hasta que una noche vieron sus mulas atadas a un poste, justo bajo el balcón de otra dama...

ll the men spoke of her beauty, and a good number of the women were envious. She was seen walking alongside her mother in the market and on daily errands to the bakery. Everyone wanted to meet the beautiful young lady; they all wanted to fall in love with her. In the afternoons, she would open a balcony window of her house and sit there, watching the world go by.

Walking down the street where the young lady lived, a tiny man – dressed all in black, wearing a huge hat, and sporting great golden spurs on his shiny boots – stopped to admire her. Astounded by her beauty and quite smitten, the little man took out his guitar and began to serenade her. From this moment on, that poor young woman never had a moment’s peace.

Over the days and weeks that followed, she seemed bewitched and restless and had no appetite.

The only thing that soothed her was the nightly serenade of the dark little man with the big hat whom people had nicknamed “El Sombrerón”.

Frightened by what they saw and by the stories of neighbors – who told of the little man’s wild galloping through the streets of the city on his mules in the wee hours of the morning, as well as of the other women who had become bewitched and had fallen in love because of his singing – the girl’s parents sought help in various churches, hoping to find a solution for what seemed to be some sort of uncanny infatuation. Day by day they saw their daughter’s eyes lose their luster, and all she did was sigh and wait for night. They even tried to take her away, but it was impossible.

Weeks passed and although El Sombrerón never lost interest in her, the young woman – weakened by lack of food and sleep – fell ill and never recovered. It’s said that on the night of the girl’s wake, and even for weeks after the funeral, El Sombrerón roamed through the streets at night, wailing his lament.

The neighbors all thought that the strange little man had finally left town when they no longer heard his cries in the early morning hours, until one night when they saw his mules tied to a post, just below another young woman’s balcony...
