Languages, Fraud, and Rain

Idiomas, Fraude y Lluvia ¡Bienvenidos al Mes de la Patria, mis Fieles Lectores!

Cuando escribo esta columna, a veces la escribo en español y luego la traduzco al inglés, a veces escribo en inglés y traduzco al español, y a veces escribo en ambos idiomas y después los desenredo mientras reescribo y edito la columna. Había pensado en ampliar el alcance de esta columna haciendo que se tradujera cada mes a otros idiomas como italiano, hebreo, ruso, suajili o jerigonza.

Había estado en contacto con alguien que, me dijeron, podría traducir a cualquier lengua; alguien que me presentaron como políglota prominente en Guatemala. Pero todos mis planes han ido mal porque... decir esto es molto dificile... ella ha sido arrestada.

Claro que estoy bromeando.

Hay un montón de turistas en Guatemala de habla italiana, hebrea y rusa, pero no en cantidades suficientes para asegurar que traducciones de columnas mensuales de opinión – ¡sobre todo la mía! – serían económicamente viables. (¿Y el suajili? Estoy dispuesto a apostar que en este país hay probablemente aún menos oportunidades de ganar dinero.) Pero mi bromita era un pequeño recurso retórico para captar tu atención para que pudiera presentar a Anabella de León. Ella es la ex directora del Registro General de la Propiedad (RGP) de quien había un montón de burlas en las redes sociales después de una entrevista el año pasado en la que intentó demostrar su supuesta destreza lingüística al hablar en inglés, italiano y alemán, pero con acento fuerte y gramática cuestionable. (Sin embargo, 20

tengo que darle crédito – el aprendizaje de otro idioma no es fácil, por lo que nunca hay que afirmar competencia y tratar de demostrarla en público a menos que uno esté más que seguro de sus propias habilidades.) ¿Por qué quería que conocieras a Doña Anabella? Porque no solo es políglota, cantante, pintora y ex-funcionaria pública, sino que también es uno de los enlaces que lleva la actual ronda de investigaciones, respaldadas por la ONU, sobre la corrupción en el gobierno central, directamente al Presidente de la República y a su familia.

Junto con otras 21 personas en el RGP, fue detenida y está a la espera de juicio por varios cargos, entre ellos los relacionados con las plazas fantasmas, donde empleados inexistentes son “contratados”, y sus sueldos – pagados, a final de cuentas, por los impuestos – van, en realidad, a llenar los bolsillos de los poderosos. Durante las audiencias preliminares tras las detenciones, surgió el nombre de José Manuel Morales (el hijo del Presidente de Guatemala, Jimmy Morales) en relación con un banquete en 2012, que el RGP contrató con el restaurante Fulanos y Menganos en la Ciudad de Guatemala. Los servicios de alimentos supuestamente nunca fueron prestados, a pesar de un pago de Q90,000 que se hizo al restaurante. Los fiscales sospechan que José Manuel, con la ayuda de su tío Samuel Morales (hermano del presidente), manejó las facturas del restaurante y fue el responsable de la facturación fraudulenta y el resultante alegado robo de fondos del Estado.

Welcome once again, my Faithful Readers!

When I write this column, sometimes I write it in English and then translate it to Spanish, sometimes I write in Spanish and translate to English, and sometimes I write in both and then untangle the two languages from each other as I go about rewriting and editing. I had been thinking about expanding the reach of this column by having it translated each month into other languages like Italian, Hebrew, Russian, Swahili, or Igpay Atinlay. I had been in touch with someone who, I was told, could translate anything; someone who was introduced to me as being the preëminent polyglot in Guatemala. But all my plans have gone awry because... this is molto dificile to say... she's been arrested.

Of course I'm joking. There are plenty of Italian-, Hebrew-, and Russian-speaking tourists in Guatemala, but not enough to ensure that translations of monthly opinion columns – especially mine! – would be financially viable. (And Swahili? I'm willing to bet that in this country there's probably even less of a chance to make money.) But my spoofing was a lovely little rhetorical device to draw you in, so that I could introduce you to Anabella de León. She's the former director of the Registro General de la Propiedad (RGP, the national property registry) who was mocked all over social media after an interview last year in which she attempted to prove her claimed linguistic prowess by speaking heavily accented and grammatically questionable English, Italian, and German. (I do have to give her credit, however – learning another language is not easy, which is why one should never claim proficiency and attempt to prove it in public unless one is more than certain of one's abilities.)

Why did I want you to know about Doña Anabella?

Because not only is she a polyglot, a singer, a painter, and a (former) public official, but she's also one of the links that leads the current round of UN-backed investigations into corruption in the central government straight to the President and his family.

Along with 21 others at the RGP, she was arrested and is awaiting trial on several charges including ones related to plazas fantasmas, or “ghost jobs” – where nonexistent employees are “hired” and are paid taxpayerfunded salaries which, in reality, go to pad the wallets of the powerful. During preliminary hearings following the arrests, the name José Manuel Morales came up (he's the son of Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales) in connection with a 2012 banquet that the RGP contracted

with the restaurant Fulanos y Menganos in Guatemala City. Those catering services allegedly never occurred, despite a payment of Q90,000 that was made to the restaurant.

Prosecutors suspect that José Manuel, with the aid of his uncle Samuel Morales (the President's brother), managed the invoices for the restaurant and was responsible for the fraudulent billing and resulting alleged theft of taxpayer funds.

José Manuel voluntarily testified before officials on September 7th, and his Uncle Sammy did so on the 12th. The following day, President Morales publicly acknowledged the involvement of his family members in the scandal. During a widely publicized Presidential Address – and standing beside the First Lady (whose facial expression, as many have pointed out, seemed to imply that even she was unconvinced of what her husband was saying) – he said, “My wife and I fully support our son and believe in the honor of my brother.

At the same time, we respect the institutions responsible for imparting justice in our country, and under no circumstances will we interfere in the case.”

This is another event in a long and growing list of serious scandals during this, the national Administration's first year in office. And this from a President who, as a candidate, assured the corruption-wearied public with his endlessly repeated slogan that he and his

Al mismo tiempo, respetamos a las instituciones responsables de impartir justicia en nuestro país, y bajo ninguna circunstancia interferiremos en su actuar”.

Este es otro caso en una larga y creciente lista de escándalos graves durante este primer año de la administración nacional. Y esto de un Presidente quien, como candidato, aseguró al público, cansado de la corrupción, con su lema repetido sin cesar: que él y su partido eran “Ni Corruptos Ni Ladrones”. ¿Quién podría haber previsto esto, ¿eh? (¿Y cuándo van a empezar de nuevo las protestas masivas en frente del Palacio Nacional?)

Es en este punto que, aparte de los escándalos que podrían estar sacudiendo el mundo de la política, usualmente estaría yo muy alegre porque en este mes la temporada de lluvias se acerca a su fin. Pero como aquellos que hemos estado prestando atención a los efectos del cambio climático en nuestro clima pueden decir, ese resultado no está asegurado este año.

La temporada de lluvia tradicionalmente ha empezado a mediados de mayo y ha terminado a mediados de octubre, pero en los últimos años se ha ido desplazando de manera que tanto el principio como el fin llegan cada vez más tarde (y también hay sucesos más y más extraños durante la temporada). Este año también se encuentra al final de un evento “El Niño” y tal vez al principio del proceso climático de “La Niña” – o al menos eso nos dicen los científicos – todo lo cual amplifica las rarezas de clima en todo el planeta. Si esta tendencia continúa, dentro de una década podríamos ver la estación lluviosa empezando tan tarde como septiembre y siguiendo hasta después de las fiestas de fin de año.

It's at this point that, aside from whatever scandals are rocking the national political world, I would usually be rejoicing that the rainy season would be coming to an end this month. But as those of us who've been paying attention to the effects of climate change on our weather can tell you, that is definitely not assured this year.

Rainy season has traditionally run from midMay to mid-October, but for the past several years, it's been shifting so that it both starts and ends later and later (and there are weirder and weirder events within the season, too).

This year is also at the end of an “El Niño” event and perhaps at the beginning of a “La Niña” process – or so the scientists tell us – all of which amplifies the oddnesses of weather around the planet. If this trend continues, within a decade we might see rainy season starting as late as September and running through the holidays at the end of the year.

So, Faithful Reader, if you're like me and you're sick and tired of rain, of mildew, and of constantly having to jump over puddles, please join me in crossing your fingers and/ or saying a small prayer to the deity of your choice to ask that this &%#$@ rain finally stop. 10 años de Los Patojos

urante el mes de septiembre la Asociación Los Patojos celebró 10 años de ser parte de un cambio importante que da esperanza y dignifica la niñez y la juventud de Jocotenango.

A través de promover el arte y el diálogo como herramientas para entender contextos, el equipo de Los Patojos lucha diariamente por escribir nuevas historias, tratando de encontrar o recuperar la alegría, la dignidad, la confianza y el amor. Es gracias a sus esfuerzos que la historia del municipio – especialmente más no exclusivamente – de la juventud ha cambiado.

Los Patojos cuentan con un espacio que se ha convertido en muchas cosas (como un comedor escolar, un centro de asistencia médica, un espacio musical, un instituto de acción cultural, un lugar de confianza y amistad) en donde la niñez y la juventud se involucran y participa en actividades de artes gráficas, periodismo, ballet, break dance, fotografía, malabares, música y teatro.

Aunque allí se recibe a todos con amor, el espacio es cada vez menor.

Los Patojos están tratando de ampliar su cobertura y para eso necesitan adquirir un terreno que les permita brindar más niveles educativos y así poder ser parte de la educación, el crecimiento personal y en general el bienestar de muchos.

10 years of Los Patojos

n September Asociación Los Patojos celebrated 10 years of being part of an important wave of change – one that gives hope and dignity to the children and young people of Jocotenango.

Through promoting art and dialogue as tools for understanding different contexts, the Los Patojos team fights daily to find and cherish happiness, dignity, trust and love and writing new stories. It is thanks to their efforts that the reality of the young people of this area – indeed not just the area – has changed.

Los Patojos has a space that over time has become many things: a school canteen, a medical center, a musical stage, an institute for cultural action....a place of trust and friendship. Here, children and young people get involved and participate in activities ranging from graphic arts, to journalism, ballet, break dance, photography, circus skills, music and theater.

Although everyone is welcomed there with open arms, the space is becoming more and more limited.

Los Patojos wants to offer even more activities, and for this they need a piece of land that will give them the space to provide more classes to a higher level – thus contributing to the education, personal development and wellbeing of many more children and young people.

Bellezas de la Naturaleza Giuseppe Tarnero

D

esde el sábado 24 de septiembre quedó inaugurada esta muestra del artista italiano Giuseppe Tarnero en las instalaciones de la Alianza Francesa de La Antigua.

Originario de Roma, es un amante ávido de la naturaleza, tanto así que ha sido miembro de la Juntan Directiva de la Organización de Estudios Tropicales en la universidad de Duke. Sumado a esto, su entusiasmo por los viajes y la fotografía le llevan a realizar varias

exposiciones fotográficas y a participar en varios talleres prácticos y teóricos en Estados Unidos y Europa.

El propósito de su exposición en La Antigua es hacer conciencia sobre la preservación de la naturaleza, el medio ambiente y la biodiversidad. Quienes asistan, podrán apreciar una muestra llena de color que ofrece hermosas imágenes de bosques, mares, desiertos, ríos y cielos.

La exposición estará abierta al público hasta el 15 de noviembre.

rom the 24th September onwards this exhibition by the Italian artist Giuseppe Tarnero has been open to the public at the Alianza Francesa in La Antigua.

Originally from Rome, he is an avid nature lover – so much so that he has sat on the Board of Directors of the Organization of Tropical Studies at Duke. His enthusiasm and love for travel and photography has also led him to carry out several photography exhibitions and to participate in various practical and theoretical workshops in the US and in Europe.

The purpose of his exhibition in La Antigua is to raise consciousness about the protection of nature, the environment and biodiversity. Those who go to see the exhibition will be able to appreciate a colorful show that offers beautiful images of forests, oceans, deserts, rivers and skies.

The exhibition will be open to the public until the 15th November.

l 1 de noviembre Guatemala vive una de sus celebraciones más grandes: el Día de Todos los Santos. Esta celebración a los muertos está – irónicamente – llena de vida y color.

En muchos lugares del país se cree que ese día el inframundo libera todas esas almas que allí habitan, y que por 24 horas los espíritus de los que han fallecido pueden visitar los lugares donde vivieron y a las personas que amaron.

En los días previos al Día de Todos los Santos, se preparan diversos platillos para compartir con familia y amigos luego de visitar el cementerio. Uno de estos platos

– el más famoso – es el Fiambre, que tiene un curtido de vegetales como base y diversos cortes de carnes y embutidos como complemento. En algunos pueblos, se llevan los platos al cementerio y se degustan allí, junto a las tumbas de los seres queridos.

Las tumbas usualmente son decoradas con flores de la época y con coronas hechas con pétalos de seda y cubiertas con cera (para que puedan durar más tiempo).

Además, algunas personas llevan velas y rosarios para poder rezar un tiempo e iluminar las tumbas aún cuando caiga la noche y tengan que abandonar el cementerio.

n November 1st, Guatemala experiences one of its biggest celebrations: All Saints’ Day. This celebration of the dead is – ironically – full of life and color.

In many parts of the country it’s believed that on this day, those souls who live in the underworld are free to leave, and that for 24 hours, the spirits of the departed are able to visit the places where they lived and the people whom they loved.

In the days leading up to All Saints’ Day, various dishes are prepared to share with family and friends after visiting the cemetery. One of these dishes – the most famous – is Fiambre, which has a base of pickled vegetables along with various cold cuts and sausages. In some villages, the different dishes are taken to the cemetery to be enjoyed there among the graves of loved ones.

The graves are usually decorated with seasonal flowers and with wreaths made of silk flowers coated with wax (so that they’ll last longer). Some people also take candles and rosaries with them to pray and to illuminate the graves after nightfall, even after they have to leave the cemetery.

En Sumpango y Santiago Sacatepéquez, en el departamento de Sacatepéquez, por más de 100 años se han elevado barriletes gigantes al cielo como una línea directa de comunicación entre lo mortal y lo divino.

Las cofradías y miembros de la población de esos lugares mantienen viva la tradición de comunicarse de esta forma con estos seres quienes habían formado parte de su vida y aquellos de quienes descienden.

En Todos Santos Cuchumatán, un municipio en el departamento de Huehuetenango, se lleva a cabo la famosa Carrera de las Cintas el Día de Todos los Santos.

Es una carrera de caballos en la que participan varios jinetes – vistiendo atuendos especiales – y corren por una pista una y otra vez durante todo el día. La tradición dice que

In Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez, in the department of Sacatepéquez, for over 100 years giant kites have been lifted to the skies as a direct line of communication between the mortal and the divine.

Religious fraternities (called cofradías) and other members of these communities keep alive the tradition of using this way of communicating with ancestors and with others who were part of their lives.

In Todos Santos Cuchumatán, a town in the departamento of Huehuetenango, the famous Carrera de las Cintas takes place on All Saints’ Day. It’s a horse race involving several riders – all wearing special outfits – who race their horses along a track, over and over again throughout the day. Tradition says that riders have to participate in the race for at least four consecutive years. One interesting fact is that, during the race and as part of the celebration, the townspeople offer drinks to the riders; it’s quite common for the riders to continue racing their horses while completely drunk (the riders, that is, not the horses).

In La Antigua, it’s common for relatives to clean their family graves and vaults before decorating them, and then to get together with friends to eat outside the gates of the San Lázaro Municipal Cemetery, where there are stalls selling food, traditional sweets, and flowers.

No matter what your destination is at the beginning of November, you’ll be fascinated to see how Guatemalans celebrate life... and death.

los secretos de los Rones Añejos Botran y su exclusivo proceso de añejamiento.

Es allí, en las montañas de Quetzaltenango, donde se dan las condiciones ideales para la creación de los Rones Añejos Botran, también donde reposan en una secuencia de barricas cuidadosamente tratadas que previamente añejaron Whiskey Americano, Jerez y Oporto.

Pudimos observar los procesos que permiten que el ron tome su tiempo para hacer suyas las cualidades que le aporta la madera, cómo va adquiriendo su color, cuerpo, aromas y sabores tan especiales, maduros y balanceados – que permiten un perfecto añejamiento – y fue una experiencia única.

he legacy of passion and tradition created by the Botran Aged Rums first began towards the middle of the XX Century, when five brothers set out from their home in Spain and arrived in Guatemala to settle in Quetzaltenango.

It was there that the business was first established, and it soon spread to Escuintla, Suchitepéquez and Retalhuleu – as these were well-known to be excellent areas for the cultivation of high-quality sugar cane.

These visionaries dedicated themselves to perfecting their rumproduction methods and to converting the aging process into a work of mastery. Generation after generation, these secrets have been passed down and have made it possible for there to

be continuous improvements throughout the chain of production: from sowing, to distillation, fermentation, bottling, packaging and distribution. The secrets of each stage are carefully guarded to guarantee the quality that distinguishes Casa Botran rums.

We visited Casa Botran in Quetzaltenango and took a tour that let us into some of the so closely-guarded secrets of the Botran Aged Rums and their exclusive aging process.

It was there – in the mountains of Quetzaltenango – that we were able to visit the place that provides the ideal conditions for the production of the Botran Aged Rums (including catching a glimpse of the series of casks that they use to age the rums, previously

used to age American Whiskey, Sherry and Port).

We were able to watch the processes that allow the rum to age over time and develop its unique qualities – how wood affects it, how it begins to take on its color, body, aroma and unique matureyet-balanced taste. We saw how these processes allowed for a perfect aging, and it was a unique experience.

As the perfect complement to this tour we were able to learn a bit more about each of the Botran Aged Rums through several tastings that allowed us to open up our palate and really enjoy one of the best products - proudly made-in-Guatemala and famous worldwide.

Nosotros, como buenos amantes de la gastronomía, al concluir nuestra visita por Xela, trajimos pan.

henever we go on a trip, we usually bring something back in our suitcase that represents the place that we have visited. Some people bring back a type of typical handicraft that the region is famous for and others concentrate on taking loads of photos that they can print out and turn into postcards. As the good old foodies, we decided to finish our trip to Xela by bringing back bread!

Xela (or ‘Xelajú’ as the main city of the region of Quetzaltenango is otherwise known) is the second most important city in Guatemala and is located in a mountainous valley in the western highlands. It is also one of several places in West Guatemala that produces a local bread known as shecas.

Some of the ingredients that are mixed into the dough include cinnamon, brown sugar, honey and aniseed.

Apart from giving the bread a particular flavor they also infuse it with a unique aroma.

Although traditionally a sheca is round in shape and darkish in color (with a little ball on top), nowadays you can find a wide variety of shecas – varied in both shape and color – depending on the ingredients that are added to them. Some ingredients that have been added to the traditional bread include cheese, jam and refried beans.

What do you eat them with? Due to the fact that it’s not an obviously sweet type of bread it can be combined with almost anything – particularly at breakfast-time or with dinner. We recommend sharing one over a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

os nísperos son un fruto amargo y dulce casi del mismo tamaño y color que un damasco. Estas frutas son más dulces cuando han madurado por más tiempo.

Hablando de su sabor, es como una mezcla entre una fruta cítrica y un melocotón y para comérselos la mayoría de las personas pelan la cáscara y les quitan las grandes semillas marrones.

En Sacatepéquez, Los árboles de níspero son cultivados especialmente en San Juan del Obispo – a unos 20 minutos del centro de La Antigua – y es allí donde estos están disponibles de octubre hasta finales de diciembre, convirtiéndose en una de las principales fuentes de ingresos para los habitantes gracias a los productos que se elaboran con ellos.

En San Juan, los habitantes han encontrado la forma de convertir sus producciones de nísperos en un hilo conductor del desarrollo económico

local. Allí se ofrecen recorridos y otras actividades con las que buscan crear una ruta turística en las faldas del volcán de Agua y acercar más al visitante con las plantaciones de nísperos y las diferentes casas de elaboración de productos artesanales por los que San Juan es famoso (como el chocolate, hierro forjado y productos de la talla en madera).

Además, han creado una carrera, denominada “Carrera 11k por el Níspero” que busca encontrar el financiamiento económico para montar el IV Festival del Níspero en el que más de 100 productores y artesanos exponen sus productos.

Todos los sábados y domingos de septiembre a diciembre puedes llevar a cabo un recorrido del níspero en dos horarios, 8 AM y 2 PM. La Carrera 11k por el Níspero se llevará a cabo el 2 de octubre.

níspero (loquat) is a sweet-yet-sour fruit almost the same size and color as an apricot and tends to be sweeter the more mature it gets. In terms of flavor, they are more like a mix between a citrus fruit and a peach, and to eat them most people peel the skin and get rid of the large brown seeds in the middle.

In Sacatepéquez, nísperos are particularly cultivated in San Juan del Obispo – around 20 minutes from the center of La Antigua – and it’s there that you will find these trees from October until the end of December.

They represent one of the main sources of income for the inhabitants of this town, thanks to the wide range of products that can be made from them.

In San Juan the local residents have found a way to turn their níspero production into an important part of the local economy. There are tours on offer that provide tours and other activities that follow a tourist route along the skirts of Volcán de Agua and that take visitors nearer to the níspero plantations and the different workshops within which the various artisan products that make San Juan famous are made (like chocolate, wrought iron and carved-wood products).

They have also created a race, named ‘’The Nispero 11k’, that seeks to generate enough funding to put on the IV Níspero Festival – where over 100 local producers and artisans would display their produce.

Every Saturday and Sunday from September to December you can go on the Níspero Tour at 2 different times daily: 8 AM and 2 PM. The Níspero 11k race takes place on the 2nd of October.

Casa Popenoe

lrededor del año 1560, en un terreno donde la 6a Calle Oriente se junta con la 1a Avenida Sur, una casa fue construida por Jacomé de Piña. Esta casa no duró mucho tiempo, y para el año 1615, el lote estaba vacío de nuevo. Alrededor de 1650, otra casa fue construida en el sitio por un sacerdote llamado Juan de Torres. Varias familias vivieron en esta casa durante el próximo siglo, ya sea heredándola o simplemente comprándola. En 1762, una comerciante llamada Venancia López Marchán compró la casa y le hizo su primera remodelación.

Luego, en 1773, la ciudad fue sacudida por una serie de terremotos devastadores conocidos como los terremotos de Santa Marta. La casa – e incluso la propia ciudad – permanecieron en ruinas.

round the year 1560, on a lot where 6a Calle Oriente meets 1a Avenida Sur, a house was built by Jacomé de Piña. This house did not last long, and by 1615, the lot was again empty. Around 1650, another house was built on the site by a priest named Juan de Torres. Various families lived in this house during the next century, either inheriting it or simply purchasing it. In 1762, a merchant named Venancia López Marchán bought the house and gave it its first remodeling.

Then in 1773, the city was shaken by a series of devastating earthquakes known as the Santa Marta earthquakes.

The house – and the city itself – lay in ruins.

After the earthquakes, the Spanish Crown moved the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala to present-day Guatemala City. The former capital, known then simply as La Antigua Guatemala (The Old Guatemala), was all but abandoned.

The badly damaged ruins of the house, while owned by several people over the years, sat derelict, although around 1850 some unknown person planted a Capuchin cypress in the courtyard, and the house became known as the Casa del Capuchino.

What makes this house so special is what happened next.

In 1930, the house was bought from its previous owner by botanist and researcher Wilson Popenoe and his wife Dorothy, an archaeologist. + en/on Pg 40

La restauración auténtica y laboriosa de la casa por los Popenoe duró más de seis años, y para rehabilitarla adquirieron puertas, ventanas y antigüedades de otras casas antiguas. Compraron estos artículos de propietarios quienes parecían no apreciar las cosas de importancia histórica que tenían.

La Casa Popenoe, como ya se le conoce a la casa, está construida sobre un plano tradicional de La Antigua, con un hermoso patio con una fuente y pasillos y habitaciones alrededor de él. También cuenta con establos, patios de servicio, un huerto y un solo baño. La casa cuenta con una impresionante colección de muebles, pinturas y obras de arte coloniales, además de una hermosa cocina totalmente equipada y de estilo colonial, y en el nivel más alto de la casa hay un palomar y una terraza con impresionantes vistas al horizonte volcánico de La Antigua.

La familia Popenoe vivió en la casa hasta el 2007, mientras con frecuencia daban tours para aquellos interesados en ver cómo los antigüeños habían vivido durante la época colonial. En 2007, la familia donó la casa a la Universidad Francisco Marroquín para su uso como museo y recurso didáctico.

The Popenoes were fascinated by the house and the history that its walls had been witness to. Despite the fact that, at the time they bought it, the house had no doors and only splinters of roof left and the walls were the only things that were moderately intact, the Popenoes were able to visualize what the house could be; they saw the majesty of the property despite its dilapidated condition.

The Popenoes’ painstaking, authentic restoration of the house lasted more than six years, and to refurbish it they acquired doors, windows, and antiques from other old houses.

They purchased these items from owners who seemed not to appreciate the historically important things they had.

Casa Popenoe, as the house has come to be known, is built on a traditional La Antigua floor plan, with a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and corridors and rooms around it. It also has stables, service courtyards, a kitchen garden, and one single bathroom. The house boasts an impressive collection of colonial furniture, paintings and artworks, plus a beautiful and fully equipped colonial-style kitchen, and at the house’s highest level is a dovecote for pigeons and terrace with amazing views of La Antigua’s volcanic skyline.

The Popenoe family lived in the house until 2007, while frequently giving tours to those interested in seeing how Antigüeños had lived during the colonial era. In 2007, the family donated the house to Universidad Francisco Marroquín for use as a museum and teaching resource.

monumento 21 de Bilbao

S

anta Lucía Cotzumalguapa es un municipio del departamento de Escuintla que se ubica a 34 km de la cabecera departamental y a 90 de la Ciudad de Guatemala. En este municipio existen varios sitios arqueológicos que se encuentran entre los cañaverales, algunos a plena vista y otros bajo los cañaverales, que han sido testigos silenciosos de una gran civilización cuya extensión va desde Suchitepéquez hasta El Salvador.

Uno de estos sitios arqueológicos recibe el nombre de Bilbao y lo encuentras a por lo menos a 4 kilómetros al salir del municipio de Santa Lucía hacia el norte. Se sabe que este sitio tuvo conexión con el sitio arqueológico de El Baúl – por medio de una calzada de dimensiones muy grandes – y con otro sitio llamado Castillo.

En Bilbao existen varias plataformas —todas ellas están por debajo de la caña de azúcar – y en ellas se aprecian enormes petrograbados. Debido a su tamaño gigantesco, estos petrograbados no han sido llevados a otro lugar y aún a pesar de esto, gracias a la calidad de su bajo relieve y el material en el cual fueron realizados (basalto) se mantienen en muy buen estado.

Debido a que estas rocas usualmente miden entre 2 a 3 metros de alto y casi lo mismo de ancho,

anta Lucía Cotzumalguapa is a Municipality in the Department of Escuintla that is located 34km from the regional capital and 90km from Guatemala City.

This Municipality is home to various archeological sites in amongst the cane fields – some of them visible to the naked eye and others underneath the earth – that have borne silent witness to the great civilization that spread from Suchitepéquez to El Salvador.

One of these archeological sites was given the name of Bilbao and it can be found at a distance of at least 4km as you leave the Municipality of Santa Lucía, travelling North. It is known that this site was connected to one other site known as El Baúl by a huge causeway and to another known as Castillo.

Bilbao is comprised of a series of platforms – all of them below the level of the sugar cane fields – upon which you can observe enormous petroglyphs. Due to the sheer size of these petroglyphs they have not been transported to other locations and, because of the quality of their carving and the material that they were made from (basalt), they have remained in a very good state.

Due to the fact that these rocks usually measure between 2 and 3 meters in height and almost the same in width,

se estima que para poder grabarlas las aplanaban y luego las tallaban. Si tomamos en cuenta que en la época en la que fueron creados estos grabados – el período de ocupación de este lugar es aproximadamente del año 600 al 900 d. de C. – donde obviamente no existía tecnología de metal, el trabajo necesario los hace mucho más valiosos.

El Monumento 21 – que se encuentra a 900 metros de la carretera que va hacia el ingenio El Baúl – es un petrograbado que está labrado en una de estas rocas que debieron ser un rasgo prominente en el paisaje local desde los primeros tiempos de la historia de Bilbao. Es probable que la roca del Monumento 21 fuese objeto de atención ritual aún antes de que se labrara en ella la escena que hoy en día podemos apreciar en ella. En el periodo Clásico, se construyó alrededor de

ella la Estructura B-2, con lo que quedó incorporada como parte del trazo arquitectónico de Bilbao.

Como un dato curioso, en este monumento aparece un personaje central cuyas facciones son muy robustas, que está aparentemente danzando y en el proceso de siembra. La danza se acompaña por un tambor que es ejecutado por un personaje el cuál se le podría denominar “el músico”. Este personaje también tiene un títere en su mano derecha, siendo el aspecto más importante del monumento, porque en toda la costa sur de Guatemala, es el único ejemplo de una situación como esta.

Si quieres observar este monumento no se necesita pagar nada, está con acceso libre, pero con la sugerencia del cuidado respectivo para tan magnífico grabado de la cultura Cotzumalguapa.

it is estimated that to be able to carve them they were levelled and then carved upon. If we take into account the period in which these carvings were created – this area was occupied around 600-900 AD – and the fact that there was no metal technology at the time; the sheer amount of work that must have been needed to create these pieces makes them all the more impressive.

Monumento 21 – that is located 900m from the road that leads to El Baúl – is a petroglyph that has been worked into a rock that must have represented a prominent feature in the local landscape from the earliest years of Bilbao history onwards. It is probable that the rock that houses Monumento 21 was a ritual site before the scene that now appears on it was carved. During the Classic Period a structure known as Estructura B-2 was constructed around the rock, that later became incorporated into the main structure of Bilbao.

An interesting fact is that upon this monument appears a central character with very robust features, who is apparently mid-dance and in the process of sowing seeds. The dance is accompanied by a drum beat by the character known as ‘’the musician’’. This character also holds a puppet in his right hand and represents the most important aspect of the monument, as it is the only example of a frieze like this on the whole of the South Coast of Guatemala.

If you want to appreciate this monument there is no need to pay entrance, but visitors are encouraged to respect and care for the integrity of the magnificent carving of Cotzumalguapa.

Un Día para Maximón

l 28 de octubre, en muchos lugares en Guatemala, hay una celebración especial, pues se celebra el día de Maximón.

Maximón, San Simón, El Monchito, Laj Mam, Rilaj Maam, el conquistador Pedro de Alvarado y el traidor Judas Iscariote – es posible que hayas oído hablar de él bajo cualquiera de estos nombres. Él es, sin duda, una figura de identidades cambiantes. Él es una figura similar a la de un santo a la que apelan muchas personas en Guatemala para recibir orientación. Su efigie de madera aparece en muchos altares en todo el país, y sus ofrendas favoritas son un hermoso trío que incluye: alcohol, dinero y tabaco.

La historia maya dice que era un vigilante que fue tallado con madera del palo de pito, un árbol sagrado de los Nahuales.

Se suponía que tenía que “echarle un ojo” a las esposas de estas deidades y mantenerlas fieles, mientras que los nahuales masculinos viajaban lejos como comerciantes.

La vida moderna en las comunidades mayas nos muestra que Maximón no está solamente presente en las prácticas espirituales mayas, sino que en realidad ha ido ganando popularidad entre los guardianes – guías espirituales o sacerdotes – y las comunidades a las que sirven.

A Maximón también se invoca comúnmente en ceremonias mayas, que pueden ser eventos públicos y privados que se llevan a cabo en los espacios sagrados a lo largo del altiplano. Se le busca cuando se necesita de guía, la concesión de deseos, o de curar enfermedades graves. Él puede ser especialmente útil cuando hay una injusticia que debe ser rectificada.

Uno puede visitar a Maximón para hacer peticiones y ofrendas para pedir ayuda en asuntos personales o profesionales.

Aunque se considera una figura maya, los guardianes que acuden a él en su profesión insisten en que los mayas, ladinos y extranjeros por igual lo visita y le veneran.

n October 28th, in many places in Guatemala, there is a special celebration as it’s the day of Maximón. Maximón, San Simón, El Monchito, Laj Mam, Rilaj Maam, the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado and the traitor Judas Iscariot – you may have heard of him under one of these names. He is, without a doubt, a figure of shifting identities.

He is the saint-like figure to whom people of Guatemala appeal for guidance. His wooden effigy appears on many altars throughout the country, and his favorite offerings make a handsome trio: alcohol, money, and tobacco.

The Mayan tale that tells the story of a watchman who was carved out of the wood of the sacred palo de pito tree by the Nahuales (spirits who roamed the earth in the Mayan creation myth). He was supposed to an eye on the deities’ wives and keep them faithful while the male Nahuales were away working as merchants.

Maximón, however, defiantly used his powers to seduce the women. The Nahuales tore his body apart and detached his limbs and his head. He was later reassembled with his head on backward and his appendages held together with strips of cloth, all to prevent him from physically expressing his desires.

Modern life in Mayan communities shows us that Maximón is not just present in Mayan spiritual practices, but he has actually been gaining popularity among Day keepers – a spiritual guide or traditionalist “priest” – and the communities that they serve.

Maximón is commonly invoked in Mayan ceremonies, which are both public and private events that are carried out in sacred spaces throughout the highlands. He is called upon for seeking guidance, granting desires, and curing serious illness. He can be especially useful when there is an injustice that needs to be rectified.

One may visit Maximón to make petitions and offerings to ask for assistance in personal or professional endeavors.

Although considered a Mayan figure, the Day keepers that use him in their profession insist that Maya, Ladinos, and foreigners alike visit and venerate him.

LONGANIZAS

as longanizas son otra clase de embutidos populares en Guatemala. Como cualquier tipo de embutido, las longanizas se hacen con carne de cerdo molido que se coloca en un molde. Se sazonan con sal y especias.

De forma similar al chorizo, tanto en diseño como en sabor, las longanizas se hacen con distintas modificaciones en cuestión de especies dependiendo de la región de la que vengan. He was the first graduate of the Postgraduate Ophthalmology Program of the Hospital Roosevelt, founded by Dr. Roberto Arturo Quevedo Labereé.

After graduating with the recognition of Dr. Schepens – Director of the Ophthamology Program – and going against great pressure to stay in Boston, he decided to return to Guatemala.

Liberando Tortugas en Monterrico

onterrico se ubica en la costa del Pacífico de Guatemala, en el departamento de Santa Rosa.

Es considerada una de las playas más famosas del país gracias a que es bastante accesible, a la gran cantidad de opciones de hospedaje y alimentación que ofrece y, claro está, a la naturaleza del lugar.

Llegar a Monterrico desde La Antigua en un shuttle te tomará un poco más de dos horas, y seguramente – además de sentir el cambio en la temperatura al bajarte del vehículo – notarás que el color de la arena de la playa tiene un tono café oscuro gracias a que es arena volcánica.

Una vez que estés instalado, querrás trabajar en tu bronceado bajo el sol, aventurarte a la mar para nadar o solo descansar un poco. Durante la temporada que inicia en septiembre y termina en enero, hay otra actividad qué considerar mientras pasas tiempo en Monterrico.

El Tortugario de Monterrico, muy cerca de la Calle Principal del pueblo, alberga algunos animales en peligro de extinción y lleva a cabo una gran labor tratando de salvarlos. En el caso de las tortugas, el tortugario organiza eventos diarios – con la ayuda de algunos hoteles y restaurantes, como El Delfín, que informan a sus huéspedes de horarios y lugares en que se llevarán a cabo – para poder liberar pequeñas tortugas hacia el mar durante el atardecer. Por una pequeña donación, puedes “adoptar” una tortuguita que liberarás desde la playa al océano durante el evento, y el dinero que se reúne ayuda a comprar los huevos de tortuga (que algunos de los locales encuentren en la playa) para poder enterrarlos de nuevo y cuidarlos hasta que las tortuguitas salgan del cascarón.

onterrico is located on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, in the department of Santa Rosa. It’s one of the most famous beaches in the country because it’s quite accessible, there are many options for accommodations and food, and of course, the locale has such natural beauty.

Getting to Monterrico from La Antigua on a shuttle will take you a little over two hours, and certainly – in addition to feeling the change in temperature when you get off the vehicle – you’ll notice that the color of the beach’s sand is dark brown because it’s volcanic.

Once you get settled, you’ll want to work on your tan in the sun, venture out to the ocean to swim, or just rest.

During the season that runs from September to January, there are other activities that you might want to consider while you spend time in Monterrico.

The Monterrico turtle hatchery (El Tortugario), near the town’s main street, is home to various endangered animals and does a great job protecting them. As far as the turtles are concerned, the hatchery organizes daily events – with the help of some of the area’s hotels and restaurants, like El Delfín, that let guests know the times and places where they’ll happen – to release baby turtles into the sea at sunset. For a small donation, you can “adopt” a small turtle that you’ll set free from the beach to the ocean during the event, and the money collected helps to buy turtle eggs (which some locals find on the beach) in order to bury them again and guard them until the baby turtles hatch.

If you’re looking for an activity where you can get close to nature – and its tiny wonders – while you rest and make new friends and enjoy the sun and sea, you definitely have to visit Monterrico and be part of the conservation efforts there.

Según la cosmovisión maya, el día del nacimiento de cada persona trae consigo fuerzas o efectos que le permiten a cada individuo llevar a cabo la misión que le fue asignada en la tierra; esto va a ocurrir gracias a la protección e intervención de su nahual.

El nahual de una persona depende del día de su nacimiento y puede representarse mediante un águila, lagarto, conejo, o cualquier otro animal o elemento de la naturaleza.

Aunque en muchas ocasiones este protector se manifiesta a través de la figura de animales, el nahual es comprendido como un espíritu o fuerza que no necesariamente está relacionado a un animal.

En el calendario Cholq'ij se manifiestan 20 nahuales o signos de los días de los 13 meses del año. Estos son: B'atz', E, Aj, I'x, Tz'ikin, Ajmaq, No'j, Tijax, Kawoq, Ajpu, Imox, Iq', Aq'ab'al, K'at, Kan, Kame, Kej, Q'anil, Toj y Tz'i'.

According to the Mayan cosmovisión (worldview), the day of birth of each individual brings forces or effects that allow each individual to carry out the mission that they got assigned to take on this earth; this will be accomplished thanks to the protection and intervention of their nahual.

The nahual of a person depends on the day of their birth and can be represented by an eagle, lizard, rabbit, or any other animal or element of nature.

Although often this protector is manifested through the figure of animals, the nahual is understood as a spirit or force that is not necessarily related to an animal.
