Nota de la Editora Definitivamente ha sido un año increíble para todos los que formamos parte de Qué Pasa.

Hemos llegado a la última edición de la revista para este año, y en esta edición de diciembre (que casi decoramos con motivos navideños), te contamos de las tradiciones y celebraciones de la temporada – algunas de las cuales se llevan a cabo fuera de La Antigua – para que puedas unirte a ellas y vivir todo el esplendor del folclor chapín y sus tradiciones.

En nuestra sección especial Hecho en Guatemala – una de las favoritas, tanto de los lectores como del equipo de la revista – te presentamos productos únicos y gente fantástica que trabaja para resaltar lo mejor de Guatemala y que representa al país de forma maravillosa.

La melancolía del fin de año casi nos invade, así que antes de terminar con una nota demasiado cursi, te dejo para que disfrutes esta edición de Qué Pasa. ¡Felices Fiestas y Próspero Año Nuevo!

This has definitely been an incredible year for all of us here at Qué Pasa.

We’ve arrived at the final issue of the magazine for this year, and in this December issue (which we almost ended up decorating with Christmas bangles and baubles), we tell you about Guatemalan seasonal traditions and celebrations – some of which take place outside La Antigua – so that you can join in and experience the splendor of chapín culture and folklore.

In our special Hecho en Guatemala section – a favorite of both our readers and the magazine’s staff – we present you with unique products as well as some great people who work to highlight the best of Guatemala and who represent the country in marvelous ways.

Year-end melancholy is on its way, so before I end up being too cheesy, I’ll just leave you to enjoy this issue of Qué Pasa.

Algunas Reflexiones de Fin del Año Some End-of-the-Year Musings Mis Fieles Lectores: ¡Lo logramos!

Hemos llegado al final de otro año (al menos en el calendario occidental). El mes de diciembre ha llegado, y con él vienen muchas pero muchas celebraciones, entre estas Navidad, Hanukkah, el solsticio de invierno, Krampusnacht, Kwanzaa, Pancha Ganapati, Rohatsu, Yule, Día Bodhi, el Festival Dōngzhì y Hogmanay, y otro catisumbal de celebraciones, fiestas y conmemoraciones de todas partes del mundo.

Estoy seguro de que aquí, en la Ciudad de las Perpetuas Rosas (y Turismo) – donde damos la bienvenida a visitantes de todas partes del planeta – es probable que podás encontrar al menos algunas personas quienes te ayuden a celebrar cualquiera de ellas. O incluso podrás organizar tus propias fiestas inventadas. (¿Verdad que sí?

Ustedes quienes celebran el Féstivus.)

Una de las celebraciones por la que La Antigua es conocida es la Quema del Diablo, una celebración ardiente del bien sobre el mal. Mientras que la Quema del Diablo se celebra en toda Guatemala con pequeñas fogatas y fuegos artificiales, aquí en la Ciudad Colonial, es un asunto comunitario.

En vez de que cada casa sea sometida a una limpieza a fondo y que toda la basura del hogar (y los pecados de los habitantes) se limpien en una pequeña fogata como ritual de purificación para dar paso a la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción, acá todo el asunto es un espectáculo público.

Alrededor del primero de diciembre, una efigie del Diablo se levanta cerca de la Fuente Las Delicias en el Barrio Concepción (en la 4a Calle Oriente – en el camino oriental para salir de la ciudad, si te diriges a la capital), y esta representación amenazante de Satanás – junto con una enorme cantidad de cuetes – se incendian en la noche del 7 de diciembre, a las 6 PM en punto. (Esta es una de las pocas ocasiones en Guatemala cuando las cosas suceden a la hora programada; no hay nada de esa hora chapina cuando se trata de prenderle fuego al Cachudo.)† Siendo diciembre también significa que estamos a un mes – más o menos – de la toma de posesión de la nueva Alcaldesa de La Antigua, Susana Asensio. Después de años de inacción, mala gestión y corrupción en el ayuntamiento (así como más problemas que tengo el

espacio – o la voluntad – para enumerar), los antigüeños estamos a la espera con gran expectación y con la esperanza de que las cosas puedan empezar a cambiar en nuestra querida ciudad.

Como el viejo chiste, ojalá lo que vemos sea en realidad una luz al final del túnel y no un tren que se aproxima.

(Pero no te preocupés – la buena gobernanza es una de mis peticiones especiales a la Gran B’alam este solsticio.‡) Pero, mi Fiel Lector, una cosa que hay que recordar es que en sus corazones, la mayoría de las celebraciones de mediados de invierno del Hemisferio Norte tienen un reconocimiento de que el ciclo del año está en su punto más bajo. Esto significa que el renacimiento, la renovación y los buenos tiempos sí van a volver.

Estas celebraciones nos recuerdan que – no importa cuán frío y sombrío puede estar ahorita, no importa cuán malas parezcan las cosas, no importa cuán oscuro aparente la noche – la luz y el calor y la bondad estarán de regreso eventualmente.

Estas celebraciones deben darnos la esperanza para el futuro y la confianza de que, efectivamente, sí podemos crear un mejor mañana.

Si bien no tenemos nieve y renos acá en La Antigua,

My Faithful Readers: We made it!

We’ve reached the end of another year (at least in the Western calendar). December has arrived, and with it come many, many celebrations. There’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Krampusnacht, Kwanzaa, Pancha Ganapati, Rohatsu, Yule, Bodhi Day, the Dōngzhì Festival, and Hogmanay, plus a multitude of other mid-winter celebrations, commemorations, and observances from all around the world. I’m certain that here in the City of Perpetual Roses (and Tourism) – where we welcome visitors from everywhere on the planet – you can probably find at least a few people who’ll help you celebrate any of them. Or you could even organize your own made-up festivities. (I’m looking at you, you folks who celebrate Festivus.)

One of the celebrations that La Antigua is known for is the Quema del Diablo, a fiery celebration of good over evil. While the Burning of the Devil is celebrated all across Guatemala with small fires and fireworks, here in the Colonial City, it’s a communal affair. Instead of each house undergoing a thorough scrubbing and all the household’s rubbish (and sins) being cleansed in a small fire as a purification ritual to make way for the feast of the Immaculate Conception, here there’s an element of public spectacle to the whole affair.

sí tenemos posadas y procesiones, cuetes y bombas en las noches y nacimientos iluminando las salas de toda la ciudad. Simplemente es una época del año que está llena de magia y sorpresas. Y lo que es aún más sorprendente es que este viejo cascarrabias, tu humilde corresponsal, está de buen humor. Como el Grinch, mi pequeño corazón ha crecido tres tamaños, y ya tengo un poco de esperanza para el futuro. (Aunque esto podría tener algo que ver con el ponche con piquete que estoy tomando mientras escribo esta

columna.) En el espíritu de la temporada, quiero desearte a vos y a los tuyos ¡las fiestas más felices! (No importa cuálesquiera que celebrés...) ¡Paz en la tierra y buena voluntad para todos!

These celebrations should give us hope for the future and confidence that we can indeed make tomorrow better.

While we may not have snow and reindeer here in La Antigua, we do have posadas and processions, cuetes and bombas piercing the night, and nativity scenes lighting up living rooms throughout the city. It’s simply a magical and amazing time of year. And what’s even more amazing is that this old curmudgeon, your humble correspondent, is in a good mood. Like the Grinch, my small heart has grown three sizes, and I have a little bit of hope for the future. (Although this might have something to do with the rum-laced ponche that I’m drinking as I write this column.)

In the spirit of the season, I want to wish you and yours the very happiest of holidays! (Whichever ones you celebrate...)

Concepción neighborhood (on 4a Calle Oriente – on the way out of town if you’re headed to the capital), and this menacing representation of Satan – along with an enormous number of firecrackers – is set ablaze on the evening of December 7th at precisely 6 PM. (This is one of the very few times in Guatemala that things happen at the scheduled time; there’s no hora chapina when it comes to setting Ol’ Nick on fire.)† This being December also means that we’re about a month away from the swearing-in of La Antigua’s new Mayor, Susana Asensio. After years of inaction, mismanagement and corruption in the city government (as well as more problems than I have the space – or the will – to enumerate), Antigüeños wait with bated breath in the hope that things can begin to change in our beloved city. As the old joke goes, we’re hoping that what we see is actually a light at the end of the tunnel and not an oncoming train. (But don’t worry – good governance is one of my special requests to the Great B’alam this Solstice.‡) But, my Faithful Reader, one thing to remember is that, at their core, most of the Northern Hemisphere’s mid-winter celebrations have a recognition that the cycle of the year is at low ebb. This means that rebirth, renewal, and good times will be

Un Mundo de Fantasía

mor, Un Mundo de Fantasía es una exposición conjunta que presenta las esculturas de Alejandro Leal y las acuarelas de Gustavo García, plasmando así dos puntos de vista en cuanto a un tema en común: el amor.

Los mundos imaginarios de Alejandro y Gustavo son tan amplios e inagotables que esta exhibición en conjunto promete ser algo único y maravilloso.

Para Alejandro Leal, el amor juega un papel muy importante en nuestras vidas; el artista cree que hay diferentes maneras de vivir, sentir y actuar en él. Nuestra mente juega un poco con amor y lo transforma en fantasía. Su colección es una serie de resina y esculturas de cerámica en las que el amor es el foco principal, con un toque mágico y surrealista.

Gustavo García presenta una colección de acuarelas en las que diminutos mundos fantásticos viven dentro de otros mundos y donde el amor es representado por la madre eterna, el amante sensual y el amor por la naturaleza.

Esta exposición de obras de ambos artistas sobre el amor y la fantasía se inaugura el 12 de diciembre a las 4 PM en La Antigua Galería de Arte.

La exposición Amor, Un Mundo de Fantasía estará en exhibición hasta el 11 de enero de 2016.

mor, Un Mundo de Fantasía (Love, A Fantasy World) is a joint exhibition featuring sculptures by Alejandro Leal and watercolors by Gustavo García, combining and translating two views on a single theme: love.

Alejandro’s and Gustavo’s imaginary worlds are so vast and inexhaustible that this joint exhibition promises to be something unique and wonderful.

For Alejandro Leal, love plays an important role in our lives; this artist believes that there are different ways of living it, feeling it, and acting on it. Our mind plays around a little with love and transforms it into fantasy. His collection is a series of resin and ceramic sculptures with love as the main focus and with a magical and surreal touch.

Gustavo García presents a collection of watercolors where tiny fantasy worlds live within other worlds and where love is represented by the eternal mother, the sensual lover, and the love of nature.

This exhibition of works by both artists on themes of love and fantasy opens on December 12th at 4 PM at La Antigua Galería de Arte.

The exhibition Amor, Un Mundo de Fantasía will be on display through January 11th, 2016.

The Blue Roots

ándose a conocer en la escena musical de La Antigua, el grupo que ahora se conoce como The Blue Roots comenzó a tocar a finales de mayo del 2014 como algo eventual e informal, presentándose en un restaurante local algunos días.

La buena aceptación de su música hizo que al cabo de pocos meses se diera la necesidad de darle un nombre al proyecto, y tomaron la decisión de llamarlo The Blue Roots (Las Raíces Azules), tomando como base que interpretan una mezcla de melodías de blues y de reggae, mezclándolas con géneros como rock, jazz, funk, rock & roll, bossa nova y cumbia, así creando sonidos propios que gustan al público.

El grupo se compone por Julio Ordóñez – a cargo de la guitarra, voz y coros – y Gary Rodríguez – a cargo de la percusión, voz y coros. Se presentan durante la semana en varios restaurantes y bares de La Antigua, como Rainbow Café (MAP D3) y Cactus Taco Shop (MAP E4) y en la Ciudad de Guatemala y a veces en El Salvador.

long the way to becoming known in La Antigua’s music scene, the group now known as The Blue Roots began playing sporadically and informally in late May of 2014 when they began appearing occasionally at a local restaurant.

Finding acceptance of their music, within a few months the musicians realized that they needed to give their project a name, and they decided to call it The Blue Roots, based on their style of mixing blues tunes with reggae, and combining that with other genres such as rock, jazz, funk, rock & roll, cumbia and bossa nova to create their unique and crowdpleasing sounds.

The group is made up of Julio Ordóñez – on guitar, lead vocals, and backing vocals – and Gary Rodríguez – on percussion, lead vocals, and backing vocals. They perform during the week at various restaurants and bars in La Antigua, such as Rainbow Café (MAP D3) and Cactus Taco Shop (MAP E4) and in Guatemala City, as well as occasionally in El Salvador.

U

na vez más, la Asociación Civil Arte por la Educación se está preparando para la presentación anual del Mesías de Georg Friedrich Händel.

Los solistas serán Julia Taylor, soprano; Liz Cass, mezzosoprano; Sam Lowry, tenor; y Phillip Hill, barítono.

Este año, una adición especial será la presencia del Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Fundador y Director de Distinguished Concerts International de Nueva York. nce again, the Asociación Civil Arte por la Educación is preparing for the annual holiday presentation of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah.

Solo artists will be Julia Taylor, soprano; Liz Cass, mezzosoprano; Sam Lowry, tenor; and Phillip Hill, baritone. A special addition this year will be the presence of Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Founder and Director of Distinguished Concerts International of New York. He will be in Guatemala at the invitation of the Messiah Planning Committee and will conduct a portion of each concert. Dr. Griffith is an acclaimed conductor, and in 2014 he was the winner of The American Prize in Conducting, professional orchestra division. Special guest artist, soprano Ana Rosa Orozco, will also perform at both concerts.

The Vista Hermosa Club Rotario has collaborated with the Asociación Civil Arte por la Educación, and these non-profit organizations will share the proceeds from the concerts with the Comité de Becas Mary Sue and with Rotary Club projects in the Lake Atitlán area.

Performances will be on Tuesday, December 8th at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center in Guatemala City and on Wednesday, December 9th at Casa Santo Domingo in La Antigua. Both performances will begin at 7:30 PM. os parques centrales de las diversas ciudades de Guatemala son el corazón de la vida comunitaria. Son espacios utilizado por personas de todas las edades, tanto jóvenes como viejitos. A veces en el Parque Central de La Antigua se puede observar adolescentes quienes se reúnen y caminan una y otra vez alrededor del parque mientras conversan animadamente.

Es sabido que por mucho tiempo se ha conservado la costumbre de utilizar espacios cercanos a los parques centrales como el escenario para la interpretación de melodías con bandas musicales. Estos eventos sirven para que los ciudadanos y vecinos socialicen, sentándose en los parques a conversar y escuchar la música mientras observan a los niños jugando y disfrutando del aire libre.

Cada viernes por la tarde – usualmente a las 4 PM, pero a veces algunos minutos antes o algunos después – los músicos que conforman la Banda de Música Civil (que forma parte de la Gobernación Departamental de Sacatepéquez) inician sus interpretaciones.

Cobijados en el primer nivel del Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (hoy en día el Centro Cultural Real Palacio), estos serios señores se dedican a interpretar melodías que – tal y como uno de ellos nos dice – cualquier buen chapín reconocería. Estos conciertos les sirven de repasos y entrenamiento para cuando la banda tiene que acompañar delegaciones de la Gobernación durante desfiles o actos protocolarios.

Aquellos que disfrutan del Parque Central de La Antigua fácilmente pueden observar que estos espectáculos son tan familiares como la presencia de las famosas carretillas de helados y granizadas que deambulan alrededor del parque.

Llueva, truene o relampaguee, estos dedicados músicos están presentes cada viernes, interpretando melodía tras melodía hasta que llega el momento de un breve descanso, y a las 6 PM, la conclusión de su concierto semanal.

Es innegable que estos distinguidos señores son parte de la vida comunitaria y cultural en La Antigua y que los conciertos de la banda son un atractivo elemento para aquellos que están de visita a la ciudad, sean extranjeros disfrutando de unas vacaciones o chapines deleitándose con un día en la ciudad colonial. La buena música y un parque hermoso... relajación para calmar el alma los viernes por la tarde.

he central parks of various cities in Guatemala are the heart of community life. These spaces are used by people of all ages, both young and old. Sometimes teenagers can be seen at La Antigua’s Parque Central, meeting with friends and walking around the park again and again while having animated conversations with their friends.

One of the customs that has been maintained is using the parks as the setting for band concerts. These events allow residents and neighbors to socialize, sitting in the park to talk and listen to the music while watching children play and enjoy the fresh air.

Every Friday afternoon – usually at 4 PM, but sometimes a few minutes before or after – the musicians of the Civil Music Band (the Banda de Música Civil, part of Sacatepéquez’s Interior Department) start their concert.

Sheltered on the ground level of the colonial-era Royal Palace of the Captains General (now the Real Palacio Cultural Center), these serious gentlemen are dedicated to playing tunes which – as one of them says – any good chapín should recognize. These concerts serve as rehearsals and training for when the band has to accompany government delegations during parades or official events.

For those who enjoy Parque Central in La Antigua, it’s easy to see that these concerts are family events, as much so as the famous ice cream carts that roam around the park.

Rain or shine, these dedicated musicians are present every Friday, playing melody after melody until the time comes for a short break, and then at 6 PM, the conclusion of their weekly concert.

It’s undeniable that these distinguished gentlemen are part of La Antigua’s cultural and community life and that the band’s concerts are an attractive feature for those visiting the city, whether they’re foreigners on vacation or chapines enjoying a day out in the colonial city. Good music and a beautiful park... soul-soothing relaxation on a Friday afternoon.

La Guadalupana

l 12 de diciembre se celebra la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (conocida como la Virgen de Guadalupe). En ese día en La Antigua, los padres visten a sus niños pequeños en trajes típicos en honor al campesino Juan Diego quien, en 1531, tuvo una visión de una mujer joven – quien los católicos creen fue la Virgen María – rodeada de luz en la Colina del Tepeyac en México.

Si estás en La Antigua durante ese día, lo más probable es que verás muchos niños varones vestidos de rojo y blanco con pequeños sombreros de paja y bigotes pintados, y niñas con cintas en el pelo, coloridas faldas y muchos collares de cuentas. Después de visitar el altar de la Virgen de Guadalupe en la bella iglesia de La Merced (MAP B4) y participar en la misa especial y la procesión que se lleva a cabo, las familias probablemente se reunirán fuera de la iglesia para disfrutar de algo delicioso en los puestos de comida (generalmente comida típica y dulces).

También podrás ver pequeñas escenas que han sido colocadas frente a la iglesia para ser utilizadas como sets de fotografía por algunos fotógrafos. n December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe) is celebrated. On this day in La Antigua, parents dress their young children in typical trajes (traditional costumes) to honor the peasant Juan Diego who, in 1531, saw a vision of a young woman – believed by Catholics to be the Virgin Mary – surrounded by light on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico.

If you’re in La Antigua on the date, you’ll most likely see lots of little boys all dressed up in red and white with small straw hats and painted-on mustaches, and girls with ribbons in their hair, colorful skirts, and lots of beaded necklaces. After visiting the altar of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the beautiful La Merced church (MAP B4) and taking part in the special mass and a procession, families will probably gather outside the church to enjoy something delicious

(usually traditional dishes and sweets) sold at the food stalls located there.

You’ll also see tiny scenes set up in front of the church to be used as sets by photographers. These sets have painted images of the Virgin Mary and props such as marimbas, stuffed animals and comales with tortillas, so that the children can pose in these traditional settings and the parents can get a nice photo that will remind them of the day. One side note: the maximum age for children to participate in the celebration is 12 years old.

If you’d like to see another celebration on that day, the aldea of San Pedro Las Huertas near Ciudad Vieja also celebrates the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe – albeit a little more modestly – with a small procession through the streets of the village on the afternoon of December 12th.

Cocinar no Debería ser Dañino

ancy Hughes nunca imaginó que a la edad en que la mayoría de las personas se jubilan ella empezaría una fábrica de estufas en Guatemala.

En el año 2009, cuando Nancy visitó Playa Grande con un equipo médico, aprendió que el humo resultante de cocinar dentro de una casa mata casi ocho veces el número de personas que mata la malaria, y es la causa principal de la muerte de niños de menos de cinco años.

En la mayoría de las casas en las áreas rurales en Guatemala, las familias aún cocinan sobre fuegos abiertos de leña, exponiéndose a quemaduras y enfermedades del sistema respiratorio y de los ojos.

Además, el uso de leña le obliga a la gente a caminar por muchos kilómetros para cortarla. El promedio de leña que una familia recolecta al día es de 50 libras, contribuyendo a la deforestación severa y cambio climático global.

Con la ayuda de uno de los más importantes diseñadores de estufas en el mundo y la sorpresiva donación del gran guitarrista y cantante Carlos Santana, Nancy decidió tomar acción.

Ella comenzó a diseñar estufas seguras portátiles para reemplazar los fuegos abiertos para cocinar. Pruebas realizadas en laboratorio y pruebas de campo llevadas a cabo por agencias de Estados Unidos han demostrado que reducen las emisiones de materia particular en un 86% y el uso de leña en un 50%.

Junto a un grupo de voluntarios, Nancy fundó la organización sin fines de lucro StoveTeam International (es decir, el Equipo Internacional de Estufas) para ayudar a establecer fábricas locales autosuficientes. Marco Tulio Guerra creció en un área rural con muchas carencias y limitaciones y éstas le motivaron a ayudar a los más necesitados.

Marco y su esposa Ana Luisa Herrera, quienes viven en Jocotenango, trabajaron junto a StoveTeam International para dar inicio con Ecocomal, una fábrica de estufas en San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

Ecocomal diseña, fabrica y vende cinco tipos de estufas ecológicas que funcionan con leña. El costo de cada estufa incluye la instalación, la capacitación para el uso de la estufa y una revisión a los seis meses para poder responder cualquier pregunta.

Cada año, StoveTeam trae voluntarios para ayudar con la producción y distribución de estufas. Los visitantes también son bienvenidos para que puedan obtener un tour de las instalaciones o poder comprar directamente de Ecocomal para aquellos que lo necesiten.

ancy Hughes never imagined that at the age when most people retire, she would start a stove factory in Guatemala.

In 2009, when Nancy visited Playa Grande with a medical team, she learned that smoke from indoor cooking fires kills eight times as many as malaria and is the leading cause of death of children under age five.

In the majority of households in rural areas of Guatemala, families cook over open fires, risking burns, respiratory diseases, hernias, and eye problems; and using firewood requires walking for hours to collect it. The average family collects up to 50 pounds of wood per day, contributing to severe deforestation and global climate change.

With the help of one of the world’s most experienced stove designers and a surprise donation from guitarist Carlos Santana, Nancy decided to take action.

She began by designing a safe, portable cookstove to replace open

cooking fires. Field and laboratory testing

by US agencies have shown it reduces particulate matter by 86% and wood usage by 50%.

She and a group of volunteers then founded the non-profit StoveTeam International to help start sustainable, local factories. With generous contributions from Eugene Southtowne Rotary Club and Club Rotario Guatemala Sur, the project began. In the past seven years, StoveTeam has helped start seven factories in Latin America that have produced and sold more than 50,000 fuel-efficient cookstoves.

One of the most successful factories, Ecocomal, has both produced and sold cookstoves, and has also started a free school, Paso a Paso, in San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

Marco Tulio Guerra grew up in a rural area with many shortages and deficiencies, and those motivated him to help those in need. Marco and his wife Ana Luisa Herrera live in Jocotenango and they worked with StoveTeam International to start EcoComal, a stove

factory located in San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

Ecocomal now designs, manufactures, and sells five types of wood-burning ecological stoves. Training on the use and placement of the stove and a six-month follow up to answer questions are part of the cost of each stove.

Every year StoveTeam brings volunteers to help produce and distribute stoves.

Visitors are also welcome to tour facilities or purchase stoves directly from Ecocomal for those in need.

StoveTeam continues to provide training, consulting, and planning services at each factory in order to help them make it self-sufficient.

All donations to StoveTeam International, a US NGO, also go to help provide stoves to those who need them.

StoveTeam and Ecocomal are anxious to collaborate with foundations and NGOs to provide more stoves to those in need.

l tamal guatemalteco es una mezcla de sabores extraordinarios que hacen un deleite al paladar, generando sensaciones que no solo satisfacen al apetito, sino llevan consigo una ancestralidad que se remonta a los tiempos tempranos de la cultura maya. Lo anterior es observable en el sitio arqueológico de San Bartolo en el departamento de Petén donde existen murales que representan la génesis de los tiempos y en donde aparece una representación del tamal. La datación por carbono-14 de estos murales muestra que datan de alrededor del año 100 a.C. Existen muchas variedades de tamales – no solamente en Guatemala sino en toda Latinoamérica – pero en este país, los tamales más representativos son el tamal colorado (cuya base del recado es el tomate) y el llamado tamal negro (de sabor dulce gracias a que su recado lleva chocolate). Ambos son una representación simbólica de lo sagrado y lo terrenal en la cosmovisión maya.

Si bien el tamal está presente durante todo el año en las mesas chapinas, es en fechas muy importantes – como el 24, 25 y 31 de diciembre y el 1º de enero – que el tamal se asocia a esta fusión ecléctica entre lo hispano y la tradición maya, generando una riqueza única e irrepetible, tan importante para él guatemalteco quien distingue la calidad por su sabor, textura, color, calidez y envoltura.

El simbolismo del tamal viene enraizado a la creación del universo, donde la masa de maíz – el cereal por excelencia en Mesoamérica – es envuelto por hojas de plátano en el exterior (que

funcionan como aislantes térmicos) y en el interior con hojas de maxán (que mantendrán la forma y aumentar el sabor del tamal).

Para poder anudar y mantener íntegro el empaque, se utilizan espigas de cibaque. El amarrado tiene una representación simbólica (con forma de cruz) y representa las líneas que caracterizan los cuatro límites espaciales geográficos: norte, sur, este y oeste – es decir, el universo.

El cibaque es mencionado en el libro sagrado de los quichés, el Popol Vuh, como la esencia de una mujer en la Segunda Creación de los Seres. El análogo de la creación del universo es el vientre materno que gesta a los Hombres de Maíz, y a partir de esta idea los componentes del tamal cobran un especial sentido.

El recado representa la vida y la sangre del universo y un nuevo ser dentro del vientre materno. Las tiras de tomate o chile pimiento representan “el espinazo de la noche” – la Vía Láctea – a la cual todos pertenecemos y cuya visibilidad en una noche sin nubes es alargada en cualquier parte del mundo.

La influencia española en la capital del Reino de Guatemala agregó exquisitez con las alcaparras, las aceitunas, las pasas y otros condimentos. Y en el centro de cualquier tamal está la carne, y esta representa al ser humano o bien al planeta. El acto de comerlo es volverse uno con todo lo que nos rodea.

La conexión entre el universo y los mayas es muy evidente en la cocina, donde existe una tradición que trasciende al simple alimento. El resultado es un manjar que es además una enseñanza de las ideas más profundas de los Maya, transmitidas diariamente en el lugar donde se reúnen todos a la hora de comer.

The Symbolism of Tamales

he Guatemalan tamal is an extraordinary blend of flavors.

Unlike the Mexican term that ends with an “e” which many English speakers have learned, in Guatemala the dish is called a tamal (the plural is tamales), and it’s a delight for the palate. It not only satisfies the appetite, but it also has a history that dates back to the earliest days of Mayan culture.

At the archaeological site at San Bartolo in the departamento of Petén, there are Mayan murals that depict the beginning of time, and in their design there’s a representation of the tamal. Carbon-14 dating shows that these murals date back to around the year 100 B.C.E. There are many varieties of tamales – not only in Guatemala but throughout Latin America – but in this country, the most common are tamales colorados (“red tamales” with a tomato-based sauce) and tamales negros (“black tamales” which are sweet because chocolate is used in making the sauce). Both are a symbolic representation of the sacred and the mundane in the Mayan worldview or cosmovisión.

While tamales can be found on chapín tables year-round, it’s on very important dates – like December 24th, 25th and 31st, and January 1st – that tamales join in an eclectic fusion of the Spanish and the Mayan and become part of a uniquely Guatemalan tradition whose quality can be discerned through taste, texture, color, temperature, and wrapping.

The symbolism of the tamal is rooted in the creation of the universe, where the corn dough – made from the quintessential Mesoamerican grain – is wrapped in plantain

leaves on the outside (which function as thermal insulators) and on the inside with maxán leaves (to maintain the tamal’s shape and enhance its flavor).

To tie the tamal and keep its packaging intact, a natural twine – cibaque – is used. The way the tamal is tied is a symbolic representation of a cross, and its lines also represents the four geographical areas: north, south, east, and west – in other words, the universe.

Cibaque is mentioned in the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Quiché, as the essence of a woman in the Second Creation of Beings. The creation of the universe is mirrored by the womb where humanity develops, and it’s from this idea that the components of a tamal take on a special meaning.

The tamal’s sauce, the recado, represents the life and blood of the universe and a new being in the womb. The strips of tomato or pepper represent the “backbone of the night” – the Milky Way – to which we all belong and which can be seen on a cloudless night from anywhere on Earth.

The Spanish influence in the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala added delicacies like capers, olives, raisins, and other condiments. And at the center of any tamal is the meat, and this represents the human being or the planet. The act of eating the tamal is to become one with everything that surrounds us.

The connection between the universe and the Maya is very evident in the kitchen, where tradition transcends the food itself. The result is a delicacy that’s also a lesson in some of the Maya’s most profound ideas, shared daily when everyone gathers at mealtime.

orn in Jocotenango but a resident of La Antigua, this agronomist from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and the Escuela Nacional Central de Agricultura in Bárcenas has been a consultant on disaster prevention and mitigation to the United Nations, the German Agency for International Cooperation, and the Spanish Cooperation.

Although his résumé is impressive, it’s art that truly moves him. He considers himself an apprentice painter, but his drawings in ink have already drawn the attention of many who appreciate the detail and originality of his creations, and several have incorporated them into their businesses.

He believes that being in love with the city where he lives – and with its artisans, whether they work with metal, textiles, or wood – is the perfect inspiration needed to create (during many long hours) each of his designs.

iene 26 años, y en el año 2011 empezó en el camino de la fotografía. Desde entonces ha estado en busca de aprender cada día más, ya que considera que el campo de la fotografía es demasiado amplio y que siempre hay algo nuevo por conocer.

Lleva un año dedicándose a tiempo completo a la fotografía y la edición de videos. También ha organizado cursos básicos de fotografía en donde el pago que recibe es en forma de víveres para ayudar a personas necesitadas.

Uno de sus mayores logros fue poder exponer 119 fotos en la Municipalidad de la Ciudad de Guatemala. Su exposición duró un mes y tenía el tema “La gente que transforma tu Ciudad”.

e’s 26 years old, and in 2011 he started his adventures in the world of photography. Since then he has endeavored to learn more each day, because he believes that the field of photography is so immense that there’s always something new to learn. For the past year he has dedicated himself full time to photography and video editing. He has also organized courses in basic photography where payment is made in the form of supplies to help people in need.

One of his greatest achievements was an exhibit of 119 of his photos at City Hall in Guatemala City. The exhibition lasted a month and had the theme “People who transform your City.”

riginaria de Los Angeles, Jess se encontró en Guatemala por primera vez en el año 2007, trabajando con un proyecto arqueológico donde, inevitablemente, se enamoró de la cultura maya y las tradiciones de elaboración artesanal del cuero y del tejido.

En el 2010, finalmente se decidió convertir su amor por estas cosas en un negocio. Comenzó a colaborar con los artesanos con quienes se había formado relaciones, con el fin de desarrollar diseños exclusivos y crear piezas de mayor calidad.

riginally from Los Angeles, Jess first found herself in Guatemala in 2007, working on an archaeological project where she inevitably fell in love with the Mayan culture and traditions of artisanal leather crafting and weaving. In 2010, she finally decided to turn her love for these things into a business.

She began collaborating with artisans with whom she’d formed relationships, in order to develop exclusive designs and create higher-quality pieces.

Jess’ main mission with Stela 9 is to create sustainability by providing these talented artists with regular and constant work, not only to support their growing businesses, but also to foster their creativity. This commitment is why her business pays its artisans fairly and also uses locally sourced leathers, handpoured bronze, and hand-crafted textiles in her designs.

123 Años del Convite

hichicastenango – una ciudad rica en cultura, creencias y tradiciones ancestrales – celebra este 8 de diciembre el 123º aniversario de su convite.

Un convite es un característico baile de disfraces, y el de Chichicastenango le ha valido al lugar condecoraciones importantes en reconocimiento a su trayectoria, como la Orden del Soberano Congreso en el año 2007 y luego, en el año 2010, la declaración reconociéndolo como Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación.

La celebración cuenta con un preámbulo el día 7 de diciembre cuando la imagen de la Inmaculada Virgen de Concepción es trasladada de la cofradía saliente, donde ha pasado un año completo, hacia la iglesia parroquial.

En su trayecto, fieles a la imagen realizan fogatas y altares acompañados de la quema de ametralladoras y bombas anunciando su paso hacia el frontispicio de la iglesia, lugar donde es recibida al compás del son por la marimba orquesta u otros grupos que amenizan la celebración.

Con su arribo da inicio el concierto, y los integrantes de dicho convite bailan y queman vistosos toritos y otros juegos pirotécnicos. Luego de este baile, los conviteros (como se les conoce) se trasladan a llevar a cabo un ensayo final previo a su presentación el día siguiente.

La madrugada del 8 el párroco de la iglesia ofrece una misa de bendición a los conviteros y por la celebración del día de la Inmaculada Virgen de Concepción. Terminada la misa, las 25 parejas de conviteros se dirigen al salón municipal a cambiarse para dar inicio con su recorrido en las diferentes calles de la ciudad. Su primera presentación da inicio a las 6:30 AM frente a la iglesia, donde bailan tres piezas al ritmo de la marimba orquesta, para luego trasladarse a la cofradía saliente.

Durante su recorrido, pasarán por 16 casas que abrirán sus puertas a los conviteros para proporcionarles un refrigerio. En cada casa en la que se les brinda el refrigerio, después realizan dos presentaciones a varios ritmos como de vals, blues, paso doble, foxtrot, merengue u otros. Luego el convite pasa a la siguiente casa para más bocadillos y más presentaciones.

Esto continúa hasta la presentación final a las 9 PM frente a la iglesia que culmina con el desenmascaramiento de los bailarines disfrazados.

Los conviteros usan disfraces elaborados por artesanos de la región que recrean personajes del medio artístico y de caricaturas, juegos y películas. Donde pasa el convite, los conviteros llevan con ellos alegría a grandes y a chicos.

123 Years of Chichicastenango’s Convite

hichicastenango – a city rich in culture, beliefs, and traditions – celebrates the 123rd anniversary of its convite this December 8th.

A convite is a costumed dance and parade, and Chichicastenango’s has earned the city several important recognitions including the Order of the Sovereign Congress in 2007, and a declaration recognizing it as part of the Nation’s Cultural Heritage in 2010.

The celebration features a prologue on December 7th when the statue (imagen) of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is transferred from the outgoing religious brotherhood (cofradía), where it spent the entire year, to the parish church.

Along the route, the faithful build bonfires and altars and set off firecrackers, mortars, and other fireworks to herald their path to the church, where the parade is received to the rhythm of the son by a marimba band or other groups that enliven the celebration.

With the arrival, the concert begins, and the members of the convite dance and set off fireworks, including the alwaysbreathtaking torito, where a dancer wears a costume covered with lit fireworks. After this, the conviteros (as they’re known)

leave and have a final rehearsal before the big presentation the following day.

In the very early morning of December 8th, the parish priest offers a Mass to bless the conviteros and to celebrate the day of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. After Mass, the 25 pairs of conviteros go to the municipal meeting room to change before beginning their route through the town’s streets.

Their first presentation begins at 6:30 AM in front of the church, where they dance three numbers to the rhythm of the marimba orchestra, before moving on to the outgoing cofradía.

During the journey through town, the convite will stop at 16 houses that open their doors and provide refreshments to the conviteros. At each house where refreshments are served, the conviteros afterwards perform two dances to various rhythms like waltz, blues, paso doble, foxtrot, merengue, or others. The convite then moves on to the next house for more refreshments and more presentations. This continues until the final presentation at 9 PM in front of the church, which culminates with the costumed dancers being unmasked.

The conviteros wear costumes made by local artisans which recreate characters from popular culture, like cartoons, games and movies. Wherever the convite goes, the conviteros bring with them fun and joy for both adults and children.

an Antonio Aguas Calientes es un municipio del departamento de Sacatepéquez y se encuentra a unos 30 minutos del centro de La Antigua. Con un tamaño de un poco más de 15 kilómetros cuadrados, está integrado por dos aldeas: San Andrés Ceballos y Santiago Zamora.

Para llegar, puedes tomar una camioneta desde la terminal ubicada detrás del Mercado Municipal de La Antigua. Un viaje no te costará más de Q5 por vía.

San Antonio Aguas Calientes es reconocido por las presentaciones realizadas por las mujeres de localidad en las que demuestran cómo elaboran sus tejidos. Las tejedoras se organizan en distintos lugares para mostrar el uso de telares de cintura en la elaboración de textiles, incluyendo los huipiles (blusas) y los cortes (faldas) que ellas mismas utilizan.

Entre las principales actividades comerciales del lugar se incluyen la venta de maíz, de frijol y de café. También hay artesanos que se dedican a la hojalatería y muchos cuya área artesanal es la talla en madera.

Además de las excursiones para observar a mujeres tejiendo o la visita a su colorido cementerio durante las celebraciones de noviembre, algo que no es ampliamente conocido sobre San Antonio es que la actividad económica del lugar se ve favorecida gracias a que es uno de los principales productores de ataúdes en el país. Una breve caminata por San Antonio será suficiente para que puedas apreciar cómo existe una gran cantidad de carpinterías en la que el principal producto a la venta son los ataúdes.

La mayoría son elaborados a mano – con mucha paciencia – y hechos utilizando madera de pino que es lijada, curada y pintada hasta poder tener un producto final de calidad.

En el municipio existen varias distribuidoras de madera, y curiosamente, una de las más grandes se ubica justo frente al cementerio.

The Town Where Coffins Are Commonplace

an Antonio Aguas Calientes is a municipio in the department of Sacatepéquez and is located about 30 minutes from downtown La Antigua. With a size of a little more than 15 square kilometers (almost 6 square miles), the municipio is composed of two villages or aldeas: San Andrés Ceballos and Santiago Zamora.

To get there, you can take a bus from the terminal behind the Municipal Market in La Antigua. The trip should cost you no more than Q5 each way.

San Antonio Aguas Calientes is known for the presentations made by local women where they demonstrate the traditional ways of weaving fabric. In different places the weavers demonstrate how back-strap looms are used in the production of textiles, including the huipiles (blouses) and cortes (skirts) that they themselves use.

Among the area’s main commercial activities are corn, beans, and coffee sales. There are also artisans who work with sheet metal and many whose area of craftsmanship is woodcarving.

Besides the tours to watch women weaving or visits to the town’s cemetery for colorful celebrations during November, one fact about San Antonio that’s not widely known is that it’s one of the largest producers of coffins in the country. With just a short walk around town, you’ll see how many carpentry shops there are – and how in many of them coffins are the featured attraction. Most are handmade – with lots of patience – and made using pine that’s sanded, cured, and painted to make a quality final product.

In the municipio there are several lumber yards and other wood distributors, and curiously enough, one of the largest is located just in front of the cemetery.

unque no se tiene una fecha específica, generalmente durante el mes de diciembre y los primeros meses del año, un gran espectáculo natural se vive en las costas del Océano Pacífico de Guatemala: el paso de las ballenas.

Poder adentrarse en el mar y observar estos enormes mamíferos se ha convertido en una opción fascinante para todos aquellos que quieren tener un encuentro con estas criaturas de las profundidades. Las embarcaciones que proveen servicios de avistamientos en las aguas del Pacífico usualmente se adentran entre 10 y 30 millas náuticas en un recorrido que dura aproximadamente cuatro horas por las costas de Guatemala.

Poder observar estos cetáceos – ballenas jorobadas – que se trasladan solas o en ocasiones junto a sus crías, además de tener la oportunidad de avistar también delfines, tortugas marinas, grupos de atunes, mantarrayas y aves marítimas que embellecen el lugar, se ha convertido en una actividad que cobra cada vez más popularidad en el país.

Es importante considerar que Guatemala apoya el reglamento de avistamiento de ballenas y que este contempla un periodo de tiempo específico y limitado en el que se podrán observar y fotografiar (de 30 hasta 60 minutos) para no estresarlas, y es tiempo suficiente como para apreciar su belleza y tomar unas fotografías del recuerdo.

lthough there are no specific dates, generally during the month of December and the first few months of the year, there’s a great natural spectacle off the Pacific coast of Guatemala: whale migrations.

Heading out to sea to observe the huge mammals has become a fascinating option for those who want to have an encounter with these creatures of the deep. The vessels that provide whale-sightings services usually go out into the Pacific Ocean along the coast of Guatemala between 10 and 30 nautical miles on a journey that takes about four hours.

Being able to observe these cetaceans – humpback whales – who travel alone or sometimes with their young, as well as having the opportunity to observe dolphins, sea turtles, schools of tuna, manta rays and sea birds, is an activity that is becoming increasingly popular in the country.

It’s important to remember that Guatemala supports whalewatching regulations and this includes a specific, limited period of time for observation and photographs (30- to 60-minute periods) designed so as not to overly stress the whales; it’s long enough to appreciate their beauty and to take some souvenir photos.

uatemalan women work hard to provide a better future for their children. One of the important factors in getting and keeping a job is education.

Many of these women not only have the responsibilities of caring for their children and their homes, but often they are also their family’s only breadwinner.

If they could work from home and still be able to care for their families while working, the women could have more income which would result in a better quality of life for themselves and for their children. Through the La Fe de las Mujeres foundation, the aim is to improve the lives of both parents and children, ensuring that the kids receive the education they deserve.

La Fe de las Mujeres is establishing a company so that indigenous Guatemalan women can receive fair wages for their

work. That work is to make dyed products made from organic cotton, woven using backstrap looms.

The project includes creating a foundation that will pay the school fees for the children of the women who weave with the project. La Fe de las Mujeres aims to invest in the future and provide a sustainable concept that can make a difference. They want to make sure that all the profits go to the children’s fund.

Products made by the first women to become part of La Fe de las Mujeres – in San Juan La Laguna – will be sold in boutiques in Europe and the United States, and soon they’ll also be available through a virtual online store. For now, La Fe de las Mujeres has launched a fundraising campaign – requesting donations and help – to be able to optimize processes with the goal of being an efficient base both for creating jobs and for giving hope to many.

a empresa Ecocomal diseña, fabrica y vende estufas ecológicas que han sido diseñadas especialmente para poder cocinar utilizando la leña de manera responsable.

Como parte de la proyección social de la empresa, dio inicio a un pequeño proyecto – brindando talleres de repostería utilizando las estufas ecológicas, tutorías educativas a los niños y atención psicológica – enfocándose en la región cercana a donde se encuentra la fábrica de las estufas en San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

Una vez instalado en San Antonio Aguas Calientes, el pequeño proyecto – llamado Paso a Paso – tuvo que crecer a pasos agigantados, pues muchos padres tocaron a la puerta del proyecto buscando el apoyo con las tareas escolares, los cuidados y la ayuda alimentaria y nutricional que el proyecto ofrece. Ante la enorme necesidad, el proyecto ha recibido hasta el momento a 74 niños y jóvenes (entre 3 y 15 años de edad).

Debido al incremento en el número de alumnos y a que el proyecto cuenta con solamente dos maestras, Paso a Paso está en la constante búsqueda de voluntarios que quieran apoyar en las diversas áreas en que se trabaja con los niños: ya sea ayudándoles con sus tareas, ayudando con la alimentación que se les provee (gracias a donaciones periódicas) o estimulando y jugando con los niños.

En esta comunidad de un poco más de 8,000 personas que viven en la pobreza extrema (con una disponible cantidad de aproximada Q18 – o sea US$2.30 – para cada persona al día) y en donde cada familia tiene un promedio de entre 5 y 8 integrantes, recibir ayuda es vital.

Paso a Paso tiene el potencial de convertirse en una fundación que pueda brindar soporte a la comunidad a través de la educación y la salud para los niños, garantizando un futuro mejor para las familias de San Antonio Aguas Calientes. Una de sus metas es crear el primer centro vocacional del área para jóvenes y adultos – mediante un centro de arte y oficios – para generar capacidades y oportunidades de trabajo para la población que atiende y romper con ello el círculo de la pobreza.

Paso a Paso (Step by Step) with Ecocomal

he Ecocomal company designs, manufactures, and sells ecological stoves that have been specially designed to cook using firewood in a responsible way.

As part of the company’s social outreach, a small project was begun – with pastry-baking workshops using ecological stoves, children’s tutoring, and psychological care – that was focused on the area near the stove factory’s location in San Antonio Aguas Calientes.

Once settled in San Antonio Aguas Calientes, the small project – called Paso a Paso (that is, Step by Step) – had to grow by leaps and bounds as many parents knocked on the project’s door seeking support with homework, childcare, and the food and nutritional aid offered by the project. Given the enormous need, the project has so far received 74 children and young people (between 3 and 15 years old).

Due to the increase in the number of students and the fact that the project has only two teachers, Paso a Paso is continually seeking volunteers to assist in the various areas of work with children: whether by helping the children with their homework, by assisting with the food that’s provided for them (thanks to regular donations), or by engaging with them in stimulating play.

In this community of just over 8,000 people who live in extreme poverty (with an available amount of approximately Q18 – or US$2.30 – per day per person) and where each family has an average of between 5 and 8 members, assistance is vital.

Paso a Paso has the potential to become a foundation that can provide support to the community through children’s education and healthcare, in order to ensure a better future for the families of San Antonio Aguas Calientes. One of its goals is to create the area’s first vocational training center for young people and adults – with a center for arts and skilled trades – in order to generate skills and job opportunities for the population it serves and thus break the cycle of poverty.
