La Primera Alcaldesa de La Antigua

l 6 de septiembre de 2015, el Tribunal Supremo Electoral confirmó que La Antigua ya contaba con un alcalde electo. (El municipio solo había tenido un alcalde interino desde el año 2012.) Y por primera vez en los casi 500 años de la historia de la ciudad, a partir del 14 de este mes, este importante puesto está a cargo de una mujer: la Arquitecta Susana Heidi Asensio Lueg del comité cívico Antigua en Buenas Manos.

Qué Pasa tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con la nueva Alcaldesa para conocer más acerca de los planes que tiene para La Antigua.

• Esta satisfacción de llegar a la Municipalidad de La Antigua se da después de varios intentos, ¿por qué quiere usted estar a la cabeza de una de las Municipalidades más difíciles del país?

Soy antigüeña de nacimiento. Viví en el barrio de La Merced – en donde ya estaba la tienda de La Canche, estudié junto con algunos de mis primos en el colegio Constancio C. Vigil y manejé mi bicicleta por toda la ciudad. Mi infancia transcurrió en lo que era una ciudad muy distinta a la que vemos hoy en día.

Veo la ciudad hoy y los males que la quejan, y me inquietan. La Municipalidad está a cargo de articular voluntades y mejorar la vida de la gente, y sé que mi formación como urbanista – los urbanistas somos los fisiólogos de las ciudades – puede ayudar a que La Antigua mejore y deje atrás muchos de sus problemas. Creo que La Antigua puede ser una ciudad completa, productiva y competitiva – a nivel turístico – con otras ciudades importantes del mundo.

• En su vida personal: como mujer ¿qué reto representa este puesto y cómo le afecta tenerlo?

Definitivamente me afecta por la cantidad de tiempo que puedo dedicarles a mis hijos, a mi familia. Como mujer – y como parte del grupo ···

n September 6th, 2015, Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal confirmed that La Antigua had now elected a mayor.

(The municipio had had only an interim mayor since 2012.) And for the first time in the city’s almost-500-year history, starting on the 14th of this month, a woman fills this important position: the Architect Susana Heydi Asensio Heidi Lueg of the civic committee Antigua en Buenas Manos (Antigua in Good Hands).

Qué Pasa had the opportunity to talk with the new Mayor to learn more about her plans for La Antigua.

• Besides the satisfaction of finally reaching La Antigua’s City Hall after several attempts, why do you want to be at the head of one of the most difficult municipios in the country?

I’m an Antigüeña by birth. I lived in the La Merced neighborhood – where La Canche already had her shop, I studied with some of my cousins at the Constancio C. Vigil colegio, and rode my bike all over town. My childhood was spent in what was a very different city from the one we see today.

I look at the city today and the ills that plague it, and I’m disturbed. The city government is in charge of articulating intentions and improving people’s lives, and as an Urban Planner – we planners are cities’ physiologists – I know that my training can help La Antigua to improve and leave many of its problems behind. I think La Antigua can be a city that’s complete, productive, and competitive – at a tourism level – with other important cities around the world. · · ·

• ¿Qué lugar ocuparía la juventud que quiera colaborar con usted en la nueva Municipalidad que usted propone en su plan de trabajo?

Como parte de uno de los países más jóvenes del mundo, podemos generar más oportunidades de trabajo que los involucren. La energía de los jóvenes, sus nuevas habilidades y conocimientos, y la forma en que han crecido con la tecnología y la pueden aprovecharse para tener más información y así poder tomar decisiones de forma distinta – la Municipalidad necesita de esta fuerza joven para poder crear cambios.

• Se aproximan la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa. ¿Cuál cree usted que es el reto a superar en esta época?

La prueba de fuego es lograr un cambio positivo con tan poco tiempo. La prioridad es mejorar el tránsito durante estos días – para lo que proponemos estacionar antes de entrar a la ciudad y transportar a los visitantes hacia la ciudad.

Creo que es posible manejar el atractivo de la ciudad durante la época, y pueda dejar beneficios para los antigüeños. Para esto, es importante comunicar con claridad todos los planes de la Municipalidad y que todo cambio que se lleve a cabo sea del conocimiento de los ciudadanos. · · ·

· · · • In your personal life: as a woman, what challenges does this job represent and how does it affect you?

It definitely affects me in the amount of time I can spend with my children, my family. As a woman – and as part of the group of women who develop professionally outside the home – the greatest difficulty is not being able to spend as much time with them as I want.

• In the new city government which you proposed in your election platform, what would be the role of young people who want to work with you?

As part of one of the youngest countries in the world, we can generate more job opportunities for young people. Their energy, their new skills and knowledge, and how they’ve grown up with technology and can take advantage of it to have more information and be able to make decisions differently – City Hall needs this youthful strength in order to create change. · · ·

· ·· • En cuanto al tema de seguridad, ¿de qué forma va a involucrarse la Municipalidad para que esta mejore?

La seguridad en La Antigua es importante y – aún cuando no es responsabilidad directa de la Municipalidad – vamos a involucrarnos más allá de vender los espacios de estacionamiento.

Es importante prestar un buen servicio, para lo que queremos tener un mejor control de los ingresos a la ciudad y mejorar el tiempo de reacción y coordinación ante los problemas que surjan.

· · · • Lent and Holy Week are approaching. What do you think is the challenge that must be overcome during this period of the year?

• Se sabe que es difícil obtener permisos de construcción en La Antigua, y que algunos toman meses para ser aprobados y otros no se otorgan. ¿Qué acciones piensa tomar al respecto?

Bringing about positive change with such a short amount of time for preparation will be a trial by fire.

The priority is to improve traffic during the period – which is why we’re proposing that parking be established outside the city with transport provided for visitors from there into the city.

I think it’s possible to manage the city’s appeal and tourist draw during that time of year, and it can have benefits for Antigüeños, as well. So, it’s important to clearly communicate all of the Municipality’s plans, and citizens must be informed of any changes.

•¿Qué tan accesible va a ser la Municipalidad bajo su dirección?

• Regarding the issue of security, how will the Municipality be involved in order to improve the situation?

Creo que se necesitan reglas más claras y más específicas. Los permisos deben ser menos discrecionales y más transparentes.

Una vez que se tengan planes maestros – de ordenamiento y funcionales que sigan conceptos urbanísticos de beneficio para la ciudad – obtener un permiso de construcción será más fácil.

Queremos ser lo más accesibles posibles, aunque ciertamente es muy difícil atender a todas las personas que necesitan comunicar un problema o plantear algo a la Municipalidad.

Queremos llegar a cada uno, y tenemos planes de acción para ello, como los recorridos itinerantes en los que se pueda establecer un mejor contacto con las comunidades. Las organizaciones comunitarias son claves para poder tener una relación cercana entre los ciudadanos y la Municipalidad en donde la información llegue a cada lado y puedan generarse comunicaciones efectivas que traigan soluciones.

•¿Qué es lo primero que va a hacer en su primer día al frente de la Municipalidad?

Hacer que se cumplan los reglamentos, especialmente el que prohíbe el consumo de alcohol en la vía pública y los relacionados al impacto del sonido. Desde el primer momento, quiero formar relaciones estrechas con las comunidades y, como prioridad, lograr que todas las familias tengan agua potable.

Safety is important in La Antigua and – although it’s not the city government’s direct responsibility – we will be more involved with it than simply selling parking spots. It’s important to provide good services, so we want to have better control of the city’s revenues and to improve reaction time and coordination before problems arise.

• It’s widely known that it’s difficult to obtain building permits in La Antigua, and that some take months to be approved while others are never granted. What action do you plan to take on this issue?

I think clearer and more specific rules are needed. Permits must be less discretionary and more transparent. Once master plans are adopted – ones that deal with functional issues as well as the look of the city and that follow urban planning concepts to the city’s benefit – once that happens, obtaining a building permit will be easier.

• How accessible will the municipal government be under your leadership?

We want to be as accessible as possible, although it’s certainly very hard to serve each and every person who needs to report a problem or who wants to propose something to City Hall. We want to reach everyone, and we have a plan for this which includes things like roving walkabouts to establish better contact with the different communities. Community organizations are key to having a close relationship between the citizens and the municipality: information is available to both sides and these relationships can bring about effective communication leading to solutions.

• What’s the first thing you’ll do on your first day of leading the city government?

Enforce the regulations that are already on the books, especially the one that bans alcohol consumption in public and those that are related to noise pollution. From the very beginning, I want to form close relations with the community and, as a priority, ensure that all families have clean drinking water.

New Beginnings Nuevos Inicios

¡Feliz Año Nuevo, mis Fieles Lectores!

Aunque es difícil creerlo, estamos en el comienzo de un nuevo año – tanto en el calendario como para esta columna. Qué Pasa ha estado publicando mis delirios y diatribas mensualmente ya por tres años, y con esta columna nos embarcamos en el cuarto. (¿Quién habría pensado que alguien me pagaría simplemente por ser un viejo gruñón impertinente? No bien pagado, por supuesto, pero aún así es suficiente para mantenerme aprovisionado con tortillas y sal.)

Una cosa que tienen los nuevos comienzos es que inspiran la esperanza. Pero a veces hay demasiadas esperanzas poco realistas.

Pensalo de esta manera: un político es electo con la promesa de un cambio en el statu quo. Cuando ese político tome posesión del cargo, estará limitado por las políticas y los procedimientos y una cierta cantidad de inercia institucional existente, por lo que no será tan

simple como usar una varita mágica y hacer que el cambio suceda instantáneamente (a menos que el político hubiese sido electo para el cargo de Emperador y Dictador Supremo – y tal vez el de Hada Madrina también).

Eso, mi cuate, es lo que veo que está empezando a suceder aquí en La Antigua, desafortunadamente.

Como sabemos nosotros quienes durante los últimos años hemos vivido aquí, nuestra bella ciudad ha estado en declive. Después de una administración municipal inepta y torpe empañada por acusaciones de corrupción y mala gestión así como por los arrestos, tuvimos una administración que parece haber sido un simple marcador de posición que hizo nada más que lo mínimo necesario para evitar que La Antigua colapsara sobre sí misma; ni siquiera comenzó a abordar los graves problemas que afectan a la ciudad. Pero a partir de mediados de este mes, tenemos una nueva Alcaldesa, un nuevo Consejo Municipal,

y nuevas esperanzas. Ha habido tanta desesperación por el estado de la ciudad que ahora, cuando por fin hay algo de esperanza, esa esperanza está empezando a convertirse en fantasías irracionales y sueños imposibles.

La nueva Alcaldesa, la Arquitecta y Urbanista Susana Asensio, tiene un plan de acción para la ciudad que es completo y bien pensado.* Con sus cualidades profesionales, su equipo competente y capaz, y los años de pensamiento y de diseño de los planes para detener el declive de La Antigua y traer de vuelta algo de su gloria, sí es un momento de esperanza. Pero me temo que, la naturaleza humana siendo lo que es con su deseo de gratificación inmediata, cuando todo aquí en la Ciudad de las Perpetuas Rosas no ha sido perfeccionado casi de la noche a la mañana, muchos en la población se molestarán y van a decidir que la administración municipal es inepta, todo es horrible, y que la vida apesta.

Happy New Year, Faithful Readers!

Believe it or not, we’re at the beginning of yet another year – both on the calendar and for this column. Qué Pasa has been publishing my monthly ravings and rants for three years now, and with this column, we embark on our fourth. (Who’d’ve thought that you could get paid for being a grumpy old fussbudget? Not paid well, of course, but still it’s enough to keep me stocked up on tortillas and salt.)

One thing about new beginnings is that they inspire hope. But sometimes there’s just too much unrealistic hope. Think about it this way: a politician is elected by promising a change in the status quo. When that politician takes office, they will be constrained by existing policies and procedures and a certain amount of institutional inertia, so it won’t be as simple as waving a magic wand and making the change happen instantaneously (unless that politician was elected to the position of Emperor and Supreme Dictator – and maybe Fairy Godmother, too). That, my friends, is unfortunately what I see beginning to happen here in La Antigua.

As those of us who’ve lived here through the past few years know, our fair city has been

Tengo una palabra de consejo: paciencia. Mejor dos palabras: paciencia y esperanza. Pensándolo bien, mejor tres palabras: paciencia, esperanza y fe. A la gran... vamos a hacerlo bien y cambiarlo en cinco palabras: paciencia, esperanza, fe y participación ciudadana.

Sí, nuestra bella e histórica ciudad tiene sus problemas en este momento, pero hemos dado el primer paso para cambiar la situación: hemos elegido nuevos líderes quienes realmente tienen un plan y la experiencia para llevar a cabo ese plan.

También ayuda a poner las cosas en perspectiva cuando recordamos que La Antigua ha existido por casi 500 años y ha sufrido situaciones mucho peores que las que

nos enfrentan hoy. (Basta pensar en la ciudad en ruinas después de los devastadores terremotos de Santa Marta en 1773.) La Antigua sí sobrevivirá, y si todos trabajamos juntos, también puede prosperar de nuevo. Así que hagamos una respiración profunda, arremanguémonos la camisa, y pongamos manos a la obra para que nuestra querida joya colonial brille una vez más.

Quiero dejar constancia que deseo la mejor de las suertes a nuestra nueva Alcaldesa y el nuevo Consejo Municipal. La van a necesitar.

in decline. After an inept and bungling municipal administration tainted by charges of corruption and mismanagement as well as by arrests, we got a placeholder administration that seems to have done just the bare minimum to keep La Antigua from collapsing in on itself; it didn’t even begin to address any of the serious issues that affect the city. But as of the middle of this month, we have a new Mayor, a new City Council, and new hope. There has been so much despair at the state of the city that now that there’s finally some hope, that hope is beginning to border on unreasonable fantasy and pipe-dreams.

The new Mayor, Architect and Urban Planner Susana Asensio, has a thorough and well-thought-out plan of action for the city.* With her professional qualifications, her competent and capable team, and the years of thought and design that have gone into the plans for stopping La Antigua’s decline and bringing back some of its glory, it is a hopeful time. But I’m afraid that, human nature being what it is with its desire for immediate gratification, when everything here in the City of Perpetual Roses is not made perfect almost overnight, too many in the populace will be upset and decide that the city government is inept, everything is horrible, and that life sucks.

I have one word of advice: patience. Make that two words: patience and hope.

Better make that three words:

patience, hope, and faith.

What the hell, let’s go all the way and make it five words: patience, hope, faith, and citizen participation.

Yes, our beautiful and historic city has its problems right now, but we’ve taken the first step to changing the situation: we’ve elected new leaders who actually have a plan and the expertise to carry out that plan. It also helps put things in perspective when we remember that La Antigua has been around for almost 500 years and has endured situations far worse that what faces us today. (Just think of the city in ruins after the devastating Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773.) La Antigua will survive, and if we all work together, it can thrive again, as well. So let’s all take a deep breath, roll up our sleeves, and get to work to make our beloved colonial jewel sparkle once again.

I want to go on record to wish the best of luck to our new Mayor and new City Council.

They’re gonna need it.

Las Improvisaciones de Ramón Avila

I

mprovisaciones, una exposición individual del artista maestro Ramón Avila, abre este mes en La Antigua Galería de Arte. La exposición reúne un conjunto de obras muy expresionistas y abstractas: dibujos, pinturas al óleo y piezas de medios mixtos estarán en exhibición. En estas obras, el intenso drama logrado mediante el uso de la luz y la sombra, la forma y el color, da como resultado composiciones altamente evolucionadas. Aunque son abstracciones, algunas representan formas reconocibles como grandes veleros, el patrón intrincado tejido en una tela típica guatemalteca o complejos diseños arquitectónicos – por mencionar solo algunos. También tienden a causar una poderosa impresión en el espectador, inspirando sentimientos de afecto, admiración, alegría, ira y melancolía.

Como regalo para el visitante, la exposición también incluye una presentación especial de obras figurativas producidas en la década de 1960. Este grupo de pinturas con contenido diverso narra y comenta sobre el ambiente social y político de la época.

Esta serie de pinturas refleja los elementos culturales y tradicionales de su país adoptivo, visto desde un punto de vista muy personal.

Esta exposición logra consolidar el trabajo de este maestro quien ha tenido una larga carrera como artista y quien ha contribuido enormemente a la historia de las bellas artes en Guatemala.

Ramón Avila’s Improvisations

mprovisaciones (Improvisations), a one-man show by master artist Ramón Avila, opens this month at La Antigua Galería de Arte. The exhibit gathers a collection of highly expressionistic and abstract works: drawings, oils, and mixedmedia pieces will be on display. In these, the intense drama achieved through the use of light and shadow, form and color, results in highly evolved compositions. Although abstractions, some of them nonetheless represent recognizable forms such as huge sailing vessels, the intricate pattern woven into a Guatemalan textile, or complex architectural designs – to mention just a few. They also tend to make a powerful impression on the viewer, inspiring feelings of warmth, awe, joy, anger, and melancholy.

As a treat for the visitor, the exhibit also includes a special presentation of figurative works produced in the early 1960s. This group of paintings with diverse content both narrates and comments upon the social and political atmosphere of the era. This series of paintings reflects the cultural and traditional elements of his adopted country, viewed from a very personal standpoint.

This exhibition manages to consolidate the work of this master who has had a long career as an artist and who has contributed enormously to the history of the fine arts in Guatemala.

The exhibition Improvisaciones opens at La Antigua Galería de Arte on Saturday, January 16th at 4 PM. A conversation with the artist will take place on Thursday, January 21st from 5 to 6 PM. Visiting hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM, and on Sundays from noon to 7 PM. Admission to the show is free. The exhibition will be on display through March 15th.

untoPhoto es uno de los grupos de fotografía que está cobrando fuerza en Guatemala. Es un lugar virtual de reunión para fotógrafos quienes quieren compartir sus experiencias y trabajo, así como para resolver sus inquietudes. Dentro de las actividades que se realizan para promover el aprendizaje de los miembros del grupo están los concursos con una temática a definir y un juez invitado que es el encargado de escoger los ganadores.

untoPhoto is one of the photography groups in Guatemala that’s gaining momentum. It’s a virtual meeting place for photographers who want to share their experiences and work, as well as to address their concerns. Among its other activities, the group holds competitions in order to help members continue their photographic learning and growth. These competitions have a defined theme and a guest judge in charge of choosing the winners.

The guest judge for the contest with the theme “El Agua en su Entorno” (“Water in its Environment”) was Vladimir Kostka.

Un Día en el Estadio

l fútbol es uno de los deportes consentidos en Guatemala.

Una y otra vez podrás ver a los aficionados apoyar, pelear, renunciar y luego arrepentirse y volver a apoyar a sus equipos favoritos. El fútbol se vive con pasión – y decepción, si somos honestos.

Este fin de año recién pasado, la diferencia ha llegado a manos (¿o pies?) del equipo local de La Antigua: Antigua GFC. El equipo logró llegar a la semifinal del Torneo de Apertura 2015, venciendo a uno de los favoritos (y hexacampeón del torneo) Comunicaciones FC. Qué Pasa estuvo en el Estadio Pensativo el día en que La Antigua anotó el gol que les ayudó a pasar a la semifinal, y además de vivir la emoción junto con la afición, pudimos observar cómo es un día en el Estadio Pensativo.

Desde casi las siete de la mañana, se forma la fila de los aficionados quienes buscan entrar al estadio. Los lugares no son numerados, y los fanáticos quieren conseguir un buen lugar en una de las dos localidades disponibles – Tribuna (a un costo de Q100) y Preferencia (a un costo de Q50).

Además de los aficionados, afuera del estadio también se hacen presentes los vendedores de camisetas, gorros y trompetas plásticas así como algunos revendedores de entradas. Conforme pasa el tiempo, van abriéndose las ventas de algunos de los vecinos de la Calle Ancha quienes aprovechan para preparar comida y ofrecer bebidas que deben ser consumidas antes de entrar al estadio, pues no son permitidas adentro las bebidas de afuera. Adentro del estadio sí habrá una o dos ventas en las que se puede comprar bebidas (aunque obviamente muchísimo más caras).

Si asistes a un partido, tampoco es recomendable llevar muchas monedas o llaves porque, por seguridad, pueden quitártelas. Según explica uno de los encargados de la seguridad, es bastante común que algunos aficionados molestos (de cualquier equipo) aprovechan a tirarle las monedas al árbitro o a los mismos jugadores.

Al acercarse a la entrada del estadio donde está la taquilla, es evidente la conmoción que causan las edecanes que llegan a promover servicios de telefonía, bebidas, y de los patrocinadores del equipo. Grandes y chicos, todos sonríen mientras les hacen la foto con una de estas guapas mujeres.

Una vez que la fila se mueve y finalmente entras al estadio, hay un cambio perceptible en el ambiente; es una fiesta que inicia con humo verde (el color del equipo de La Antigua – los Panzas Verdes) cubriendo una buena parte del área de Preferencia. Un mar de camisetas de color verde, así como algunas de color morado del equipo de oposición, se sitúan en los graderíos, y luego llega el ruido de las trompetas y los tambores.

Hay una especie de camaradería entre los asistentes. Una vez dentro, no importa si es tu primera, segunda o centésima vez apoyando al equipo. Al unísono, durante las faltas o cuando se fallan los goles, la audiencia grita y – seamos sinceros – insulta coloridamente al culpable.

Por casi dos horas el sol es fuerte, las emociones están al máximo y cada minuto cuenta. Eres parte de esta marea verde que vibra, que ríe y que cree en su equipo. Al final, no importa si La Antigua pierde, la porra no deja nunca de gritar

A Day at the Stadium

ootball – or soccer, as North Americans call it – is one of the most beloved sports in Guatemala. Again and again, you can see fans support their favorite teams; fight for them; become disillusioned and give up; and then change their minds, turn around, and go back to being die-hard fans. Football is lived with passion and – if we’re going to be honest – with disappointment, as well.

At the end of the year that’s just passed, something different fell into the laps (or should that be “fell at the feet”?) of La Antigua’s local team, Antigua GFC. The team reached the semifinals of the 2015 Opening Tournament, beating one of the favorites (and six-time tournament winner) Comunicaciones FC. Qué Pasa was at the Pensativo Stadium on the day that La Antigua scored the goal that helped them move on to the semifinal, and besides experiencing all the excitement alongside the rest of the fans, we were able to see what a day at Estadio Pensativo is like.

Starting a little after seven in the morning, fans wait in line to enter the stadium. The seats aren’t numbered – it’s open seating on a first-come, first-served basis – and the most enthusiastic fans

want to get a good spot in one of the two general sections available: Tribuna (which costs Q100 per seat) and Preferencia (which costs Q50).

In addition to the fans, outside the stadium there are also vendors selling shirts, caps, and plastic trumpets. There are a few ticket scalpers around, as well.

As time goes on, more and more of the stadium’s neighbors on Calle Ancha begin to open up their temporary stalls offering meals and snacks, as well as drinks which have to be finished before going into the stadium, because no outside beverages are allowed. Yes, there will be a couple of vendors selling drinks inside the stadium, but they’ll obviously be much more expensive inside.

When you go to a match, it’s advisable not to have many coins or keys in your pockets, because for safety, the security detail may confiscate them.

As one of the security officers explains, it’s quite common for upset fans (of any team) to try to throw coins at the referee or at the players themselves.

As you approach the entrance to the stadium where the ticket window is, the commotion caused by some young women is plain to see. They’re there promoting all sorts of businesses – telephone companies, brewers and distilleries, and the team’s sponsors – and

everybody, young and old, smiles as they have their photos taken with one or another of these beautiful women.

Once the queue begins to move and you finally manage to enter the stadium, there’s a perceptible change in the atmosphere; it’s a fiesta that begins with green smoke (the color of La Antigua’s team – the Panzas Verdes) covering much of the Preferencia section of the stadium.

A sea of green shirts, as well as a few purple ones from the opposing team, are visible in the stands, then comes the sound of trumpets and drums.

There’s a kind of camaraderie among those in attendance. Once inside, it doesn’t matter if this is your first, second, or hundredth time supporting the team. In unison, during free kicks or when a goal is missed, the audience yells at and – let’s be honest – colorfully insults the culprit.

For almost two hours, the sun is strong, emotions run high, and every minute counts. You’re part of this green tide that vibrates from emotion, that laughs, and that believes in the team.

In the end, it doesn’t matter whether La Antigua wins or loses, the fans never stop yelling

Alma de Colores Alma de Colores

lma de Colores es un taller de inclusión laboral para personas con discapacidad en el Lago de Atitlán.

Ubicado en San Juan La Laguna, el taller trabaja con 23 personas entre los 16 y 44 años con diferentes discapacidades, empleándoles en cinco áreas de trabajo: la artesanía, la costura, la panadería, un huerto orgánico, y un comedor y café.

El comedor y el huerto orgánico se llevan a cabo en el marco del proyecto Café Correcto de cooperación internacional. Alma de Colores es uno de los varios servicios ofrecidos de forma gratuita por el Centro Maya Servicio Integral, el cual también ofrece terapias, educación especial y otros servicios a personas con discapacidad de todas las edades.

Los 23 trabajadores de Alma de Colores reciben ingresos justos a través de un apoyo puntual por cada producto que entregan. Además, reciben beneficios como alimentación, transporte y préstamos sin intereses para su educación y tienen

acceso a una caja de salud con la cual pueden cubrir sus necesidades médicas.

El trabajo se realiza con una filosofía de justicia, inclusión y solidaridad, la cual también se extiende a sus productos. La artesanía se trabaja con semillas locales; la panadería hace pan integral de semillas; la costura se hace con telas recicladas; el huerto promueve plantas tradicionales; y, finalmente, el comedor sirve comidas naturales y nutritivas. Colaboran con otros negocios con filosofías similares y organizan actividades de sensibilización con las comunidades en las cuales trabajan.

Alma de Colores (Colorful Soul)

lma de Colores (Colorful Soul) is an inclusive workshop for people with disabilities in the Lake Atitlán region. Located in San Juan La Laguna, the workshop employs 23 people between the ages of 16 and 44 with different disabilities; they work in five areas: handicrafts, sewing and needlework, a bakery, an organic garden, and a diner and coffee shop.

The diner and organic garden are run as part of the international project Café Correcto. Alma de Colores is one of several services offered free by the Centro Maya Servicio Integral, which also offers therapies, special education, and other services to people of all ages with disabilities.

The 23 workers at Alma de Colores receive fair wages through timely payments for each product delivered. They also receive benefits such as food, transport, and interestfree educational loans, as well as having access to a health fund which they can use to meet their medical needs.

The work of Alma de Colores is performed with a philosophy of justice, inclusion, and solidarity – a philosophy which also extends to their products. Local seeds are used in the making of handicrafts; the bakery also makes use of the seeds in wholemeal bread; the sewing is done with recycled fabrics; the garden promotes traditional plants; and lastly, the diner serves natural and nutritious meals. They also work with other businesses which have similar philosophies and they organize awareness activities with the communities in which they work.

El Cadejo

F

ueron muchas las veces que el dueño del bar, Don Paco, trató de sacar al sastre, Joaquín, para que se fuera a su casa.

Tomando en cuenta la cantidad de gente que venía de otros lugares al pueblo, Don Paco estimaba que cada viernes y sábado más de algún ladrón estaba de visita esperando el momento de robar a sus clientes aprovechando su estado alcoholizado.

Joaquín nunca hizo caso. Siempre dijo que tenía un compañero que se iba con el hasta su casa y que esperaba que entrara para después irse. Con el tiempo, muchos aseguraron que un perro blanco esperaba a Joaquín siempre que salía del bar. Le movía la cola y recibía contento el pan que Joaquín el sastre le guardaba cada tarde. Una vez sobrio, Joaquín no se recordaba de nada.

Muchos decían que Joaquín tenía un ángel guardián en forma de perro que lo acompañaba y lo cuidaba. Otros comentaban que probablemente era porque Joaquín siempre ayudaba a los que podía. Pero también siempre tomaba cuando tenía oportunidad porque no superaba la muerte de su esposa y su hijo, y otros decían que estaba protegido debido a esta angustia.

En el caso de Don Julio, el notario al que todos temían por sus mañas, muchos decían que las pocas veces que lo habían visto borracho, siempre era en compañía de un perro negro. Cada vez, al día siguiente, Don Julio no recordaba qué le había ocurrido o cómo había llegado a su casa. Y cada vez estimaba que se había caído, porque usualmente estaba lastimado y lleno de moretes.

Don Paco les contaba a sus clientes que su papá hablaba de El Cadejo, un perro que acompañaba a los que se pasaban de copas y que a veces servía de guía y protector. Nunca lo había visto, pero – en el caso de gente buena como Don Joaquín – estaba seguro que era un amigo.

any, many times the bar owner, Don Paco, tried to get the tailor, Joaquín, to leave and go home. Considering the number of people coming into town from other places, Don Paco estimated that each Friday and Saturday, there was at least one thief – and maybe more – visiting town and just waiting to take advantage of his customers’ drunken state to steal from them.

Joaquín never paid any attention. He always said that he had a companion who went all the way home with him and who made sure he went inside before leaving. Over time, many claimed that a white dog was always waiting for Joaquin when he left the bar. The dog would wag its tail and happily receive the bread that Joaquín the tailor had saved. But when he was sober, Joaquín didn’t remember a thing.

Many said that Joaquin had a guardian angel in the form of a dog who accompanied him and looked after him.

Others added that it was probably because Joaquín always

helped anyone he could. But he also drank whenever he had the opportunity because he hadn’t been able to overcome the death of his wife and son, and others said that he was protected because of this heartbreak.

In the case of Don Julio, the notary whom everyone feared because of his cunning, many said that the few times that they had seen him drunk, he was always accompanied by a black dog. Each time, on the following day, Don Julio couldn’t remember anything that had happened or even how he got home. And each time, he felt sure that he must have fallen, because he was usually injured and covered with bruises.

Don Paco told his customers that his father had spoken of El Cadejo, a dog that would accompanied those who were a bit tipsy and that sometimes would serve as a guide and protector.

He had never seen it, but – at least in the case of a good person like Don Joaquin – he was sure it was a friend.

on una gran popularidad en varios países de América, el ceviche es un plato en el cual se mezcla cualquier variedad de pescado o marisco (usualmente crudo) con jugos, hierbas y vegetales (y en ocasiones frutas).

Se han encontrado evidencias del consumo de un plato similar al ceviche que indican que existía desde hace casi 2,000 años. En Suramérica, en especial en el Perú – donde se reconoce como una comida local y tradicional – se encuentra la más grande cantidad de variaciones. Se cree que el plato del cual se tomó la idea para el ceviche fue llevado al Perú por moros de Granada quienes acompañaron a los conquistadores y colonizadores españoles. Desde ese momento fue adaptándose al agregarle ingredientes locales hasta llegar a ser el ceviche que se conoce hoy en día.

Entre las variaciones de ingredientes y recetas, también existen variaciones en cómo es deletreado el nombre del plato.

Among the differences in ingredients and recipes, there are also variations in how the name of the dish is spelled. In Central America, the various versions of ceviche don’t differ from each other much at all. The region’s abundant seafood and the availability of a wide variety of herbs and spices means that the “Central American version” of ceviche has its own distinctive ingredients.

In Guatemala, ceviche is simply and easily prepared: take seafood – chunks of fish, shrimp, conch, crab and/or other shellfish – cook it (chemically, not using heat) with lemon juice, adding diced onion, tomato and cilantro. To finish off the seasonings, some people add tomato juice, along with Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and hot sauce to taste. Ceviche is usually eaten during weekends, accompanied by saltine crackers and, of course, a good beer. ¡Buen provecho!

En Qué Pasa somos fanáticos de los mariscos y las bondades (¡y el sabor!) que dan a nuestras comidas. Aunque una visita al mercado suena como el principio de una aventura, muchas veces esto se nos complica. Gracias al tip de nuestro director Scott Stanton, ahora podemos comprar una gran variedad de deliciosos frutos del mar directamente desde nuestra puerta. Los martes y los viernes tenemos la visita de Esber Octavio Azañon y Danilo Ixcoy Azañon, primos y comerciantes que siguen con la tradición familiar – que inició hace casi 35 años – de vender mariscos a domicilio. Con una llamada, Don Esber y Danilo llegan en su pequeño picop a la puerta de tu casa y abren sus maravillosas hieleras que contienen (dependiendo de la temporada, por supuesto): calamar, pulpo, concha, róbalo, dorado, curvina, mero, abulón, pargo, mojarritas, camarones, atún y langostas. Sí, todo es delicioso, fresco y traído directamente de los puertos lo más rápido posible.

Don Esber y Danilo (al que no le gusta que le digan “Don” porque tiene solo 24 años) venden todo lo que trae de los puertos el mismo día, y de esta forma evita congelarlos y descongelarlos como ocurre usualmente con los productos que se venden en el mercado.

Los lunes y los jueves venden en la ciudad capital y los miércoles y fines de semana vende abarrotes. Estos señores, cuyo negocio se llama “El Tiburoncín Veloz”, parece que no se detienen nunca.

sually, with a brief visit to the municipal market – especially on market days, which in La Antigua are on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays – you can buy all kinds of seafood: many different kinds of fish, shrimp in every size imaginable, mussels, octopus, and more.

We here at Qué Pasa are fans of seafood as well as the benefits (and taste!) that these “fruits of the sea” give our meals. While visiting the market might sound like the beginning of an adventure, sometimes it can be. Thanks to a tip from our publisher Scott Stanton, we can now buy a wide variety of delicious seafood right at our front door. (And don’t worry – we are going to share the tip with you.)

On Tuesdays and Fridays we get a visit from Esber Octavio Azañon and Danilo Ixcoy Azañon, cousins and businessmen who follow the family tradition – which began almost 35 years ago – of selling seafood for home delivery.

With one call, Esber and Danilo come in their small pickup truck to the door of your house and open their wonderful coolers containing (depending on the season, of course): squid, octopus, conch, sea bass, dorado, corvina, grouper, abalone, snapper, mojarras, shrimp, tuna, and lobster. Yes, everything is delicious, fresh, and brought straight from the seaside as quickly as possible.

Esber and Danilo sell what comes from the ports on the very same day, and that way they avoid freezing then thawing the seafood as usually happens with the products sold at the market.

On Mondays and Thursdays they sell seafood in the capital, and on Wednesdays and weekends, they sell groceries. It seems like these gentlemen, whose business is called “El Tiburoncín Veloz” (The Speedy Little Shark), are always on the go.

Laguna Lachuá is a small lake (actually a cenote) surrounded by lush jungle. It’s thought to be the collapsed remains of an old salt dome. The color of the water – and the effects of the sunrises and sunsets on it – is one of the most important reasons to visit... that and being able to take pictures that will leave the viewer breathless. There’s a good reason that this place has been called “the mirror of heaven.”

This book, Privatization and the New Medical Pluralism: Shifting Healthcare Landscapes in Maya Guatemala, takes patient stories and leading-edge research and synthesizes them to create a critical look at the challenges, opportunities, and changes that impact healthcare for the Maya population in Guatemala.

What led you to write this book?

PR: We felt there needed to be an up-to-date account

of how the Maya attain healthcare. Since the Peace Accords [in 1996], there have been so many changes – including privatization and outsourcing. Most accounts of healthcare haven’t adequately dealt with this.

AC: I remember a patient that Wuqu’ Kawoq had in the summer of 2010, Gloria, whose daughter had been sick with a cough. We were really struck by the number of healers and doctors she had gone to, seeking treatment for her daughter. On top of going to the herbalist at ···

·· · Además de ir al herbalista en el mercado local, a una farmacia, y a uno de los ancianos de la comunidad, Gloria había ido a una clínica privada a bastante distancia y también a una clínica de una ONG patrocinada por estadounidenses.

Ella había reunido un surtido de remedios a un precio bastante alto, pero tenía demasiado miedo de usar cualquiera de ellos porque estaba tan acostumbrada a recibir consejos médicos de pobre calidad que no sabía en quién confiar.

En cierto sentido, esta familia tenía muy poco acceso a la atención médica, pero en otro sentido, en realidad hubo varias opciones disponibles para ellos – solo es que las opciones eran de diversas calidades y diferentes costos, ninguna de ellas se conectaron y la entera experiencia fue muy fragmentada.

Como equipo, hemos tomado de la lenguaje de la antropología para hablar de cómo los pacientes están participando en el “pluralismo médico” – es decir, accediendo a los diversos sistemas de curación, tanto tradicional como biomédica, y dirigiéndose a múltiples sectores para la atención médica: el público sistema de salud gubernamental, las privadas clínicas con fines de lucro, y el creciente número de ONG que prestan asistencia médica en todo el país.

La idea para la elaboración de este libro surgió porque teníamos muchas ganas de entender exactamente cómo nuestros pacientes experimentan, por un lado, el acceso tan limitado a la atención médica, y por otro, una variedad de servicios fragmentada e impredecible, así como los retos tal sistema representa para nosotros como proveedores en términos de saber cómo ayudar a los pacientes a navegar todas las opciones, y la manera de estar ahí para ellos. ¿Cuál es el mensaje principal de este libro?

PC: Los mayas son ingeniosos, y alcanzan la atención

médica de maneras muy creativas. Cada vez más lo hacen mediante la participación de los proveedores de salud privados o sin fines de lucro – en lugar de los servicios del gobierno – y por lo general pagan por estos servicios. Este es el nuevo contexto para el diseño de soluciones de atención médica en Guatemala.

AC: Esperamos que este libro proporciona un sentido de algunos de los retos y las oportunidades que los guatemaltecos indígenas rurales se enfrentan a diario a medida que tratan de conseguir la atención médica. Es el único libro que realmente describe en detalle el sistema de salud de Guatemala, tanto su historia como cómo se ve hoy en día.

· · · the local market, a pharmacy, and one of the community elders, Gloria had actually gone to a private clinic a few towns away and to an NGO mission clinic sponsored by Americans.

She had collected an assortment of remedies at quite a high price, but was too afraid to use any of them, because she was so accustomed to getting poor medical advice that she didn’t know who to trust. In a sense, this family had very little access to care, but in another sense, there were actually a number of options available to them – the options were just of varying quality and costs, none of them were connected, and the whole experience was extremely fragmented.

As a team, we borrowed from the language of anthropology to talk about how patients were engaging in “medical pluralism” – that is, accessing diverse healing systems, both traditional and biomedical, and turning to multiple sectors for their care: the public governmental health system, private for-profit clinics, and the increasing number of NGOs providing healthcare throughout the country.

The idea for putting together this book emerged because we really wanted

to understand exactly how our patients experience, on one hand, such limited access to healthcare, and on the other, a fragmented and unpredictable variety of services, as well as the challenges such a system poses to us as providers in terms of knowing how to help patients navigate through all of the options, and how to be there for them.

What’s the take-home message of this book?

PR: The Maya are

resourceful, and they attain healthcare in incredibly creative ways. Increasingly, they do this by engaging with private or nonprofit healthcare providers – rather than government services – and they usually pay for these services. This is the new context for designing healthcare solutions in Guatemala.

AC: We are hoping that this book provides people with a sense of some of the challenges and opportunities that rural indigenous Guatemalans face on a daily basis as they try to get healthcare. It’s the only book that really describes in detail Guatemala’s health system, both the history of it and what it looks like today.

oga. Todo el mundo habla de yoga ahora en el occidente. El yoga es parte de los seis sistemas de filosofías de la India. Se cree que tiene una antigüedad de más de tres mil años y que data del período del año 3000 hasta 1600 B.C.E. A finales del siglo XIX, los primeros yoguis salieron de la India hacia el Occidente, exponiendo sus principios y participando en conferencias. La gran explosión del yoga – con su incremento en popularidad – ocurrió en la década de 1990.

En realidad, el yoga es una filosofía que utiliza diferentes técnicas para desarrollar la conciencia discriminativa. Las posiciones – llamadas sanas – son solo una parte del proceso.

Se necesita un cuerpo en buena salud para poder sentarse por periodos más o menos largos – dependiendo del practicante – y hacer el trabajo de introspección. Las sanas ayudan a interiorizarse también, pero solo si son ejecutadas con una utilización correcta de la respiración y una actitud de no violencia, humildad y sinceridad.

La palabra yoga significa “unión” en sánscrito; popularmente se explica como la unión entre el cuerpo, la mente y el espíritu. Los Yogas Sutra de Patanjali, descriptivo texto de autoridad del yoga, lo describe como “la suspensión de las fluctuaciones de la mente”.

Existen diferentes escuelas de yoga. Algunas se enfocan en sanas, otras en técnicas de respiración, otras en meditación y otras en una mezcla de las tres. Dependiendo de las necesidades del aspirante, es posible practicar diferentes disciplinas, tomando siempre en cuenta de que la práctica de sanas no es un ejercicio físico aunque el cuerpo sea el vehículo que se usa para experimentar el yoga a grosso modo. Los enfoques en la respiración y la concentración le dan a esta disciplina una dimensión más allá de lo físico.

Yoga. Nowadays in the West everyone is talking about yoga.

It’s part of the six systems of philosophies from India and is believed to have a history of more than three thousand years, dating from the period of 3000 to 1600 B.C.E. At the end of the 19th century, the first yogis came from India to the West, expounding yoga’s principles and participating in conferences.

The great yoga explosion – with a vast increase in popularity – occurred in the 1990s.

In fact, yoga is a philosophy that uses different techniques to develop discriminative awareness. The positions – called sanas – are only part of the process.

A body in good health is needed to be able to sit for periods that are somewhat lengthy – depending on the practitioner – while doing the work of introspection and self-contemplation.

The sanas help to internalize as well, but only if they are

executed with the correct use of breathing and an attitude of nonviolence, humility, and sincerity.

The word yoga means “union” in Sanskrit; this is commonly explained as the union between body, mind, and spirit. The Yogas Sutra of Patanjali, yoga’s descriptive and authoritative text, describes it as “the suspension of the fluctuations of the mind.”

Las vitaminas son miembros de un grupo de sustancias que contribuyen al funcionamiento celular, al desarrollo y crecimiento normal del cuerpo y a la salud en general. Catalogadas utilizando letras del alfabeto, existen 13 vitaminas esenciales para que el cuerpo funcione adecuadamente.

Las vitaminas se agrupan en dos categorías que variarán en el tiempo de almacenamiento y su utilización en el cuerpo.

Comúnmente se menciona a la vitamina C como el aliado contra los resfríos; sin embargo, el papel principal de esta vitamina es de favorecer la absorción del hierro en el cuerpo, conservar tejidos saludables y ayudar con mantener las encías y los dientes sanos.

La vitamina D a veces es conocida como “la vitamina del sol”. Esta vitamina se produce en el cuerpo después de estar expuesto a la luz solar. Para poder producirse, se recomienda la exposición al sol – en horarios en que los rayos no sean muy fuertes, como temprano por la mañana o después de las 3:30 de la tarde – por 15 minutos, al menos tres veces por semana.

Vitamins are members of a group of substances that contribute to cell functioning, normal body development and growth, and general health.

Categorized by letters of the alphabet, there are 13 vitamins that are essential for the body to function properly. Vitamins are grouped into two categories which differ in the length of storage in the body and how they're used by it.

Vitamin C is commonly mentioned as an ally against the common cold; however, the main role of this vitamin is to promote the absorption of iron in the body, preserve healthy tissue, and help keep gums and teeth healthy.

Vitamin D is sometimes known as the “sunshine vitamin.” This vitamin is produced in the body after exposure to sunlight. In order for this to happen, exposure to sunlight is recommended – at times when the rays are not so strong, such as early morning or after 3:30 in the afternoon – for 15 minutes, at least three times a week.
