Nota de la

Editora Estamos acercándonos al fin de año y nuestra revista de noviembre trae muchas cosas positivas.

Tenemos mucho arte gracias a un hermoso artículo acerca de una destacada artista y amiga – Elvira Méndez – quien estará presentando su trabajo en Angeline (véanlo en la página 26); otro sobre una exposición fotográfica de Fotokids en la página 93 y otra más presentada por Rodrigo Aparicio en la página 30.

the editor We’re getting very close now to the end of this year, and our November edition of the magazine brings with it a great air of positivity.

This edition is full of art; with a beautiful article about our friend and great artist Elvira Méndez – who will be exhibiting her work in Angeline (see Page 26) – another about the Fotokids exhibition on Page 93, and yet another introducing Rodrigo Aparicio’s exhibit on Page 30.

Several of the people who work on a daily basis for the good of our country honor us with their presence on Page 32. We are also celebrating Casa Popenoe’s Festival de Aguacate this month – don’t miss the event by using our Calendar on Page 84.

November is coming…and it’s full of all of those things that make us proud of our country – our customs, our food and our people. Celebrate all of it with us!

Tiempo, Atletas y Notas al Pie Me da pena por los agricultores.

Sé que te estás preguntando, Fiel Lector, si me han secuestrado o si los alienígenas se han apoderado de mi cuerpo (o si la gerencia de Qué Pasa ha decidido sustituirme por otro escritor sin decirte).

Charlie Chisme – un gruñón malhumorado y siempre molesto acerca de todo – ¿¡¿en realidad se siente lástima por alguien más?!? Sí, es verdad. Sí tengo un punto débil. (En realidad tengo varios – incluyendo el que está en la parte superior de mi shola – pero seguro que no voy a decirte cuales son menos que sea absolutamente necesario.)

Así que ahora que hemos determinado que esta columna ha sido escrita por el mismo viejo cascarrabias como de costumbre, la siguiente pregunta lógica es: “Charlie, ¿por qué sentís pena por los agricultores?”

Porque, Fiel Lector, aquí en Guatemala – como en muchos países de todo el mundo que tienen una temporada de lluvias/ monzónica regular y predecible – la mayor parte de la agricultura no utiliza la irrigación artificial y en su lugar depende casi por completo de la lluvia natural. Y con el cambio climático global, los patrones de precipitación están cambiando de manera que será doloroso para muchos.

Mientras que aquí en La Antigua no estamos bajo ninguna amenaza inmediata de una subida en el nivel del mar1, si has estado prestando atención, incluso un poquitito, en los últimos cinco años más o menos, habrás notado que las estaciones de lluvias (o en buen chapín, los “inviernos”) cada vez son más raros. Las lluvias están empezando más tarde, terminando más temprano, y hay más periodos sin lluvia durante las temporadas 22

que normalmente se explican por la famosa “canícula”2.

No solo es que los cultivos están fallando debido a las precipitaciones insuficientes o mal oportunas3, sino que también puede ser que no haya suficiente agua de lluvia en los embalses hidroeléctricos para generar energía suficiente para las necesidades del país4.

Es en este punto donde mi mal humor se establece. (O en realidad, puede ser simplemente el fatalismo; en este momento no estoy seguro de que ya pueda distinguirlos.) No tengo ninguna solución. Ni siquiera una que sea completamente inviable.

Simplemente no sé qué hacer.

El problema del cambio climático global es tan grande y tan abrumador – y desde hace décadas tantas personas han estado llamando la atención en vano – que simplemente no estoy seguro de lo que se puede hacer, o incluso que si hay algo que sí se pueda hacer. Es posible que nos hayamos condenado a nosotros mismos como especie a la extinción. (¿Qué tal eso como pensamiento alegre en tu lectura ligera? Pero no te preocupés... no voy a terminar esta columna con una declaración tan bajón.)

Aquí hay algo optimista de que todos podemos estar orgullosos: ¡Guatemala ganó una medalla de oro en la gimnasia!

Sé que estás pensando, “Momentito... ¿no terminaron los Juegos Olímpicos a mediados de agosto?” Así es. Pero esta no es una medalla olímpica; es, en opinión de muchos, algo igual de bueno o incluso mejor: una medalla de oro en la Copa Mundial Challenge de la Federación Internacional de Gimnasia, que se celebró el mes pasado en Szombathely, Hungría.

I feel sorry for the farmers.

I know you're wondering, Faithful Reader, if I have been kidnapped or if alien pod-people have taken over my body (or if the management at Qué Pasa has decided to replace me with another writer without letting you know). Charlie Chisme – a grumpy and always-upset-at-just-about-everything grouch – actually feels sorry for someone?!? Yes, it's true. I do have a soft spot. (I actually have several – including the one on the top of my head – but I'm sure not gonna tell you what they are unless it becomes absolutely necessary.)

So now that we've determined that this column has been written by the same old grump as usual, the next logical question becomes: “Charlie, why do you feel sorry for the farmers?”

Because, Faithful Reader, here in Guatemala – as in many countries around the world that have a regular and predictable rainy/monsoon season – the majority of agriculture uses no artificial irrigation and instead depends almost entirely on natural rain. And with global climate change, those precipitation patterns are changing in ways that will be painful for many.

While we here in La Antigua are under no immediate threat of sea-level rise1, if you've been even somewhat paying attention over the past five years or so, you'll have noticed that the rainy seasons keep getting weirder. The rains are starting later, ending earlier, and there are more periods without rain during the season than normally would be accounted for by the famous canícula.2 Not only are crops failing because of insufficient or wronglytimed rainfall3, there also may not be enough rainfall set aside in the hydroelectric reservoirs in order to be able to generate sufficient power for the country's needs4.

This is where my grumpiness settles in. (Or actually, it just may be fatalism; at this point I'm not sure I can tell them apart anymore.) I have no solution. Not even one that's completely unworkable. I simply don't know what to do. The problem of global climate change is so big and so overwhelming – and so many people have been sounding the alarm for decades to no avail – that I'm simply not sure what, if anything, can be done.

We may have doomed ourselves as a species to extinction.

(How's that for a cheery thought in your light reading?

But don't worry... I won't end this column on such a downer of a statement.)

Here's something upbeat that we can all be proud of: Guatemala won a gold medal in gymnastics!

I know you're thinking, “Wait a minute... Didn't the Olympics end back in mid-August?” Yes, they did. But this isn't an Olympic medal; it is, according to many, something just as good if not better: a gold medal at the International Gymnastics Federation's World Challenge Cup which was held last month in Szombathely, Hungary.

Entre los ganadores de estos concursos de gimnasia básica como barras paralelas, anillas, salto y barra de equilibrio, Jorge Vega López – un patojo local de Jocotenango – ganó el primer lugar en los ejercicios de piso para hombres con una nota perfecta de 15.000, ganando su primer medalla de oro internacional y demostrando una vez más que los atletas guatemaltecos en los deportes individuales (como la gimnasia, marcha atlética, natación y bádminton) se desempeñan mucho mejor que los atletas del país en deportes de equipo.5 Y por último este mes, quiero disculparme.6 Nuestro equipo editorial ilustre parece sentir, en su sabiduría que abarca todo relacionado con los asuntos de publicación, que este mes he utilizado demasiadas notas al pie.7 Así, Fiel Lector, me disculpo.8 En el futuro me esforzaré para limitar mi uso de ellas.9 Hasta el próximo mes, me quedo, como siempre, tu humilde10 – y gruñón – sirviente.

1 Esa es una de las cosas buenas de estar a unos 1,500 metros sobre el nivel actual del mar – a diferencia de, por ejemplo, las personas desafortunadas que viven en Livingston o Monterrico.

Among the winners of such staple gymnastic competitions as parallel bars, rings, vault, and balance beam, Jorge Vega López – a local boy from just up the road in Jocotenango – placed first in Men’s Floor Exercises with a perfect 15.000, winning his first international gold medal and once again proving that Guatemalan athletes in individual sports (like gymnastics, racewalking, swimming, and badminton) do much better than the country's teamsport athletes.5

And finally this month, I want to apologize.6 Our illustrious editorial staff seems to feel, in their allencompassing wisdom about all things print-related, that I have used too many footnotes this month.7 So, Faithful Reader, I apologize.8 I shall endeavor in the future to limit my footnote use.9 Until next month, I remain, as ever, your humble10 – and grouchy – servant.

uatemala es un país bendecido con una historia de arte rica y fascinante –que se remonta a tiempos pre-colombinos, tejidos en el textil de la cultura maya.

Y aunque a lo largo de los años esta historia ha sido sinónimo de lucha, de celebración, de identidad y de pérdida, Guatemala ha producido arte tan visceral como vibrante – tanto como una celebración de la asombrosa naturaleza que nos rodea como en forma de reflejo de la política contemporánea.

En 2016, la escena del arte en Guatemala está llena de una gran cantidad de jóvenes y vivaces artistas con talento; ellos utilizan una amplia variedad de materiales y sujetos para dejar su huella.

Entre estos artistas guatemaltecos contemporáneos destaca Elvira Méndez.

Nacida en Ciudad de Guatemala en 1976, Elvira originalmente se preparó como diseñadora gráfica, pero ha trabajado como ilustradora, pintora, profesora y como coordinadora de proyectos y eventos en varios centros culturales en La Antigua.

En 2004 ganó una beca para estudiar pintura y muralismo en Cusco, Perú; y en su natal Guatemala ha mostrado su estilo único a través de comisiones

uatemala is a country blessed with a rich and fascinating artistic history – a history stretching back to pre-Colombian times, woven into the fabric of the Mayan culture. This history over the years has been synonymous with struggle; with celebration; with identity and with loss. Guatemala has produced art that is as visceral as it is vibrant – as celebratory of the astounding nature that surrounds us as it is reflective of contemporary politics.

In 2016, the art scene in Guatemala is bustling with a host of young, vivacious, talented artists using a wide variety of materials and subject matter to make their mark. Amongst these contemporary Guatemalan artists stands out Elvira Méndez.

Born in Guatemala City in 1976, Elvira originally trained as a Graphic Designer, but has worked as an illustrator, a painter, a teacher and as a Coordinator of cultural projects and events in several Cultural Centers in Antigua Guatemala. In 2004 she won a scholarship to study painting and muralism in Cusco, Perú; and in her native Guatemala she has showcased

en el diseño y la ilustración que van desde estampados para la industria textil y revistas de turismo nacionales a las obras literarias de escritores guatemaltecos como Francisco Alejandro Méndez, Arnoldo Gálvez y otros.

Su trabajo también ha aparecido en publicaciones de editoriales conocidas y centros culturales. No sólo eso, sino que ha pintado murales para festivales culturales y ha contribuido ilustraciones para publicaciones educativas para jóvenes publicados por el Ministerio de Educación y una amplia gama de otras organizaciones. Para agregar algo más a su carrera profesional como ilustradora y diseñadora, también ha expuesto su obra en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Perú, Guatemala y Cuba, y forma parte del Colectivo de Artistas Contemporáneos en Antigua Guatemala: ‘C.A.C.A.’ Durante el mes de noviembre, La Antigua tiene la suerte de acoger una nueva exposición de esta talentosa artista local. Inaugurándose el 12 de noviembre en el Restaurante Angeline (MAP D3), la exposición de Elvira ‘Bocetos e Historias’ no es algo que quieran perderse.

e ideas iniciales que se produjo al mismo tiempo que se crearon algunas de sus pinturas e ilustraciones para diferentes proyectos.

Casi todas estas piezas representan instantáneas de proyectos inspirados en las obras literarias de escritores guatemaltecos, o forman parte de una serie de historias para jóvenes o representan los inicios de una colección de pinturas. Estos bocetos y las pinturas en las que se convertirían – al igual que gran parte del trabajo de Elvira – representan temas como la madre naturaleza o las mujeres; y ejemplifican su estilo pictórico. Son piezas originales en lápiz o tinta – experimentos con tono y color – que se utilizaron para ayudar a crear piezas finales para diferentes libros o publicaciones. ¿Por qué es esta una exposición tan única? Se trata de una exposición de ideas, una exposición de la primera vez que una imagen se puso a papel ... la primera pincelada.

Como dice Elvira ‘’ Estos son tesoros que he guardado a lo largo de los años y finalmente decidí que eran dignos de ser puestos en exhibición, una exposición diferente, una que tiene un ambiente íntimo y acogedor ‘’.

Opening on the 12th November in Restaurante Angeline, (MAP D3) Elvira’s exhibition ‘Bocetos e Historias’ (Sketches and Stories) is not one to miss. This exhibition is a collection of sketches, rough drafts and initial ideas that came about whilst creating some of her paintings and illustrations for different projects.

Almost all of these pieces represent snapshots of projects inspired by the literary works of Guatemalan writers, or as part of a series of stories for young people, or they represent the very beginnings of a collection of paintings. These sketches and the paintings that they would become – like much of Elvira’s work – depict themes such as Mother Nature or women; and they exemplify her pictoral style of painting. They are original pieces in pencil or ink - or experiments with tone and color – that were used to help create final pieces for different books or publications.

Why is this such a unique exhibition? This is an exhibition of ideas, an exhibition of the first time an image was put to paper…the first brushstroke. As Elvira says ‘’These are treasures that I have kept over the years, and I finally decided that they were worthy of putting into an exhibition….an different kind of exhibition, one that has an intimate and welcoming atmosphere’’.

Geometrías del Nuevo Mundo

L

a exposición del reconocido Arquitecto Rodrigo Aparicio, titulada Geometrías del Nuevo mundo, es una colección de placas grabadas y al menos veinte dibujos pintados de las fachadas de las iglesias de Sacatepéquez. Todas las placas y fachadas provienen del Catálogo de la Arquitectura y Urbanismo de Sacatepéquez.

En ese estudio – elaborado por el Arquitecto Aparicio entre los años 83 al 86 – se hizo un inventario de la arquitectura de los pueblos y edificios de Sacatepéquez que poseían un carácter e interés histórico y que aún conservaban sus características vernáculas particulares.

he exhibition of the well-known architect Rodrigo Aparicio – titled ‘Geometry of the New World’ – is a collection of engraved tiles and at least 20 paintings from the façades of churches in Sacatepéquez. Each of the tiles and façades is included in the Catalogue of Architecture and Urbanism of Sacatepéquez.

In the course of this study – carried out

by Architect Aparicio between the years of ’83 and ’86 – an inventory was put together of the architecture of the towns and buildings of Sacatepéquez that possessed interesting character or were historically significant, and that still conserved their specific traditional characteristics.

This exhibition showcases important distinguishing characteristics of each church and each façade – highlighting the richness and diversity of the architecture of the region – and, in particular, of La Antigua. It is a valuable contribution to the recovery and dissemination of the cultural heritage of Guatemala.

Ivana Aguilar Licenciada en diseño gráfico y Fotógrafa egresada de la Universidad del Istmo, Ivana es miembro del NY Institute of Photography y de la Academia de Arte Arts Artis. Se desempeña como gestora y promotora de arte en Fundación Rozas Botrán.

Es miembro fundador de Grupo Sólido Guatemala y voluntaria de Asociación la Familia Importa. Ha expuesto su trabajo fotográfico dentro de marcos como el Festival Internacional Arte en Mayo y en el Central American Art Exhibition del Northern Trust and Fundación Rozas Botrán y Radiografía de la Foto en Guatemala en el Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Española.

Yes, November is a month that – although it might not be obvious at first glance – sees the women of Guatemala shining with their own light; making themselves visible and making each one of their causes visible too. We wanted to introduce you to several women who – through their work, their effort and their great example – are constructing a better Guatemala.

Ivana Aguilar With a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design and Photography from the Universidad del Istmo, Ivana is a member of the NY Institute of Photography and of the Arts Artis Art Academy. She works as a cultural coordinator and an art promoter for the Rozas Botrán Foundation.

She is also a founding member of the Grupo Sólido Guatemala and a volunteer for the Asociación la Familia Importa. She has exhibited her photography work on stages such as the Festival Internacional de Arte en Mayo, in the Central American Art Exhibition put on by the Northern Trust and Fundación Rozas Botrán, and has been a part of the Radiografía de la Foto en Guatemala exhibition now on display at the Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Española.

She is also the co-founder of Dos Estudio – a commercial photo studio that seeks to inspire Guatemala through the power of photography.

Además, en dicho negocio, por casi una década, se ha garantizado la estabilidad laboral de más de 15 mujeres – en su mayoría madres solteras. Cristina es un ejemplo de superación y de enseñanza con ejemplo.

Paula Méndez Resumir todos los logros de esta atleta sería imposible. Ha sido la Campeona Nacional de Escalada Deportiva desde 1998 hasta el 2010.

Es una atleta destacada

de la Federación Nacional de Andinismo y sus logros internacionales cuentan, entre otros, un segundo lugar en The North Face Master de Boulder en Perú y ser la Campeona centroamericana en The North Face Antigua Boulder Challenge en el 2014 y en el 2016.

Todos estos logros ciertamente son algo para sentirse orgullosa, sin embargo, Paula considera que su mayor logro ha sido el nacimiento de su hija y dedicarse al 100% a ella.

Además de ser una madre increíble y una atleta del más alto nivel, Paula es el claro ejemplo de que dos pasiones pueden combinarse con excelencia.

She considers that it is important to live in harmony with our surroundings – both socially and environmentally – as she believes that what you give, is what you will receive in one way or another.

Together with her husband, she runs a successful family business that also serves as a platform for a range of non-profit organizations to share the work that they do and to make their needs known so that more people can get involved. For almost a decade this business has also guaranteed a stable job for more than 15 women – many of them single mothers. Cristina is an example of achievement and leading through example.

Paula Méndez Summarizing the achievements of this athlete would be almost impossible. She has been the National Champion for Competitive Climbing from 1998 to 2010. She is a prominent athlete within the Federación Nacional de Andinismo and her international achievements include – amongst others – 2nd Place in the North Face Boulder Master in Perú and Central-American Champion in the North Face Antigua Boulder Challenge in 2014 and 2016.

Each one of these achievements certainly represents a great source of pride, but Paula considers the birth of her daughter and her dedication to her to be her greatest triumph. Apart from being an incredible mother and a top-class athlete, Paula is a clear example of the fact that you can combine your different passions and excel at them.

Su labor va más allá de presentar las bondades del país a quienes nos visitan y ser una excepcional anfitriona, gracias a ella, campañas como la que hizo conciencia acerca de la trata de personas – que pintó con luz los principales monumentos de la ciudad – pudieron llevarse a cabo.

Her successful career includes having won1st Place in the first Campeonato CENTRO in Mexico,1st Place in her category and 2nd Place in a higher category in the Campeonato Nacional de México. She represented Guatemala in the Trial World Championships in France from the 6th to the 10th of September this year.

This was the first time that Guatemala was represented in an international event in female Motorcycle Trial.

She has constantly headed up the leaderboard in the advanced 36

category, competing against men (many of whom are much older than her). She doesn’t give up and she’s always challenging herself.

Ana Beteta Besides being a member of the boards of several major entities related to trade and tourism, being the vice president of the Gremial de Bodas y Lunas de Miel de Guatemala (The Weddings and Honeymoons Trade Association of Guatemala) Ana Beteta is a mother who is showing her daughter how to love

Her work goes beyond presenting the greatness of the country to those who visit us – while being an exceptional hostess. Digital Storytelling with Peace Works Travel

principios de agosto, Old Town Outfitters tuvo el privilegio de acoger a un grupo de estudiantes de la escuela secundaria HarvardWestlake en Los Ángeles para llevar a cabo un itinerario diseñado por Peace Works Travel.

Como un grupo de documentalistas en proceso, fueron guiados por su interés en la búsqueda de historias que podrían contar. Para hacerlo, su itinerario consistió en gran parte en reuniones con organizaciones sin fines de lucro de Guatemala como De la Gente y Starfish Impact.

Peace Works ofrece viajes educativos con conciencia social y en el pasado ha llevado a cabo con éxito programas de viajes a destinos como Vietnam, Camboya y Ruanda. La intención detrás de esto se hace más evidente cuando se considera una de las interrogantes clave de la clase, que es ¿Cómo las sociedades afectadas por el genocidio continúan evolucionando en la secuela?

Es en este contexto que Guatemala, con un turbulento pasado por una guerra civil de casi cuatro décadas de duración, se convirtió en un destino de interés - más aún teniendo en cuenta la cantidad de influencia que los EE.UU. ejerció sobre los asuntos internos de Guatemala en el siglo 20. La clase tiene como objetivo explícito rastrear el origen de la guerra civil de Guatemala a una de sus causas fundamentales: una política exterior de post guerra de EE.UU. impulsada por el intervencionismo extranjero.

Les pide a los estudiantes que reflexionen sobre algunas de las preguntas más difíciles acerca de las consecuencias de tal política.

n early August, Old Town Outfitters had the privilege of hosting a group of students from Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles on an itinerary designed by Peace Works Travel.

As a group of budding documentary filmmakers, they were guided by their interest in finding stories they could tell. In order to do so, their itinerary consisted largely of meetings and interactions with Guatemalan non-profit organizations like De La Gente and Starfish Impact.

Peace Works offers socially conscious educational travel, and in the past has successfully conducted travel programs to destinations such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Rwanda.The intention behind this becomes more apparent when you consider

one of the key questions the class is driven by on these trips, which is how do societies afflicted by genocide continue to evolve in the aftermath?

It is in this context that Guatemala, with a past troubled by an almost four decade-long civil war, became a destination of interest – all the more so given the amount of influence the U.S. exerted on Guatemala’s domestic affairs in the 20th century.

The class explicitly aims to trace the origin of the Guatemalan civil war back to one of its root causes, namely a post-war U.S. foreign policy driven by interventionism abroad.

It asks the students to ponder some of the more difficult questions about the consequences of such a policy.

La fundadora y directora de Peace Works, Alethea Tyner Paradis, nos contó todo esto mientras elaboraba su itinerario para la semana. Explicó también que tenían un par de horas disponibles un martes por la tarde. Mencionamos que conocíamos a un sobreviviente guerra civil, uno de nuestros guías locales en el departamento de Quiché. Alethea estaba entusiasmado con la idea de tener los estudiantes escuchan un relato de primera mano de un testigo ocular, y por lo que decidimos establecer una reunión.

Afortunadamente, Diego era muy abierto a la idea y aceptó inmediatamente. El vive en un pequeño pueblo fuera de Acul, Quiché, y lo conocimos mientras afinábamos la ruta y la logística de nuestra caminata de Nebaj a Todos Santos. Aparte de acomodar nuestros grupos en su casa y acompañarlos en el segundo día de la caminata, el fue una fuente valiosa de la historia local.

Obviamente, ningún artículo va a hacerle justicia a la complejidad de la guerra civil en Guatemala.

Para proporcionar al menos algunos antecedentes para el contexto que nos ocupa, es útil saber que Nebaj (nombre completo: Santa María Nebaj) es una de las tres ciudades que se conoce formaron la comunidad Ixil, nombrada con el nombre de la etnia maya predominante de la región. Nebaj, en particular, fue el sitio de una de las peores masacres de la guerra contra la población indígena, mientras que el área que rodea a estos pueblos, en general, vio algunos de los combates más intensos de la guerra entre 1980 y 1982.

Diego tenía ocho años de edad cuando la guerrilla llegó por primera vez a su pueblo para obtener apoyo para su causa, y apenas un adolescente cuando comenzó la matanza.

Volviendo a la actualidad, el productor veterano de televisión y documentales Jeff MacIntyre, quien acompañó

Peace Works’ founder and director, Alethea Tyner Paradis, elaborated on all of this while going over their itinerary for the week. She explained a few hours had opened up on a Tuesday afternoon. We mentioned that we knew a civil war survivor, one of our local guides in the Quiché department. Alethea was excited about the idea of having the students hear a first-hand account from an eyewitness, and so we decided to set up a meeting.

Fortunately, Diego was very open to the idea and agreed immediately. Living in a little village outside of Acul, Quiché, we first met him while fine-tuning the route and logistics of our Nebaj to Todos Santos trek. Apart from accommodating our groups in his home and accompanying them on the second day of the trek, he has also been a valuable source of local history.

Obviously, no single piece is going to do justice to the complexity of the Guatemalan civil war. To provide at least some background for the context at hand, it is helpful to know that Nebaj (full name: Santa Maria Nebaj) is one of three towns generally understood to form the Ixil community, named after the region’s prevalent Mayan ethnicity. Nebaj in particular was the site of one of the war’s worst massacres against the indigenous population, while the area surrounding these towns in general saw some of the war’s most intense fighting between 1980 and 1982.

Diego was eight years old when the guerrilla first came to his village to garner support for their cause, and barely a teenager when the killing began.

Por último, recordó cómo la guerrilla comenzó a participar en operaciones clandestinas, cada vez más audaces hasta que los militares se vengaron, superando rápidamente cualquier cosa que pudiera considerarse remotamente proporcional.

Cuanto más tiempo continuó la lucha, más desesperadas fueron las medidas empleadas por ambos lados: los militares finalmente quemaron el pueblo de Diego y todos los cultivos de la zona, implementando la notoria campaña de tierra quemada, diseñada para ahuyentar a los combatientes guerrilleros.

Una expresión común en Guatemala dice “hay que quitarle el agua al pez”, que básicamente significa que si el pez no muerde, simplemente hay que drenar el estanque con el fin de atraparlo. La guerrilla, enfrentando al adelgazamiento de sus filas, recurrió a forzar a los hombres y a cada vez más jóvenes a tomar las armas. Diego tenía doce años cuando su padre se enfrentó con la opción de entregarlo a unirse a la lucha o recibir un disparo de muerte.

the group in a mentoring capacity, took charge to create a genuine interview setting: Once the scene was professionally lit, Jeff engaged with his interview subjects first on a general level, to provide some historic context, then gradually on a more personal level. Diego also brought his cousin Santos along for the occasion.

A few years older than Diego, his memories of the period were even more detailed. Over the course of two hours, the two recounted their experiences.

About first encountering the guerrilla recruiters, Diego remembered hearing all the promises being made to the village’s farmers and their families, about how political change was sweeping the country and how they were all going to benefit materially and economically. Then, how both he and Santos first became involved themselves, being made to act as messengers and errand boys.

Finally, how the guerrilla began engaging in clandestine hit-and-run operations, growing bolder until the military retaliated, quickly surpassing anything that could be considered even remotely proportionate.

The longer the fighting went on, the more desperate the measures employed by both sides became: the military eventually burned down Diego’s village and all crops in the area, implementing a now notorious scorched-earth campaign designed to flush out guerrilla combatants.

A common Guatemalan expression goes “quitarle el agua al pez”, which basically means that if the fish won’t bite, just drain the pond in order to catch it. The guerrilla, faced with thinning ranks, resorted to forcing ever younger men and youth into picking up arms.

Diego was twelve years old, when his father was faced with the choice of either handing him over to the fight or being shot to death.

El ejército, por su parte, no se detuvo en alimento y refugio a la hora de vaciar el estanque metafórico. Pronto, una mera sospecha de conspirar contra el Estado era suficiente para ser considerado culpable por asociación y ejecutado en el acto.

Al final, tanto Diego como Santos estuvieron entre los afortunados que lograron sobrevivir. Sin embargo, al ser sobrevivientes, también significó tener que vivir sin cierre por las pérdidas que sufrieron, como el que los restos de varios de sus miembros de la familia siguen enterrados en fosas comunes en la actualidad. Se están dando los pasos necesarios para el proceso de identificación y transferencia de los restos, pero hay un rastro de papel considerable involucrado y el apoyo político es prácticamente inexistente.

Cualquier ayuda que personas como Diego reciben en esta materia proviene de la iniciativa privada.

Al escuchar de primera mano de los testigos oculares realmente les dio a los estudiantes de Peace Works una idea palpable no sólo de la escalada gradual del conflicto, sino también cómo los civiles, sin saberlo, se vieron envueltos en un conflicto que se convirtió en lucha armada antes de que tuvieran la oportunidad de realmente entender que había una división ideológica subyacente en el primer lugar. Esto es por supuesto especialmente cierto en el caso de Diego y Santos.

Fueron tan accesibles que intrigaron a los estudiantes y el grupo continuó durante otros 45 minutos con preguntas y respuestas en un parque cercano después de que el centro cultural se cerrara. Para nosotros, en términos de estudiar la historia y tal vez aprender una cosa o dos en el proceso, el asunto ahora es abstracto, a ser tratado de forma muy racional. Para aquellos que lo vivieron, sin embargo, siempre será muy específico y emocional.

The military, in turn, did not stop at food and shelter when it came to metaphorically draining the pond. Soon, a mere suspicion of conspiring against the state was enough to be considered guilty by association and executed on the spot.

In the end, both Diego and Santos were among the lucky ones who made it through this period alive. Being survivors, however, also meant having to live without closure for the losses they endured, as the remains of many of their family members are still buried in unmarked mass graves to this day. Steps are being undertaken to enable the process of identifying and transferring the remains, but there is a considerable paper trail involved, and political support is practically non-existent. Any assistance people like Diego receive in this matter comes from private initiatives.

Hearing firsthand from eyewitnesses really gave the Peace Works students a palpable idea not just of the gradual escalation of the conflict, but also how civilians unwittingly were drawn into a conflict that turned into fullblown armed warfare before they w w w. q u e pa s a . g t

had a chance to really understand that there was an underlying ideological divide in the first place.

This is of course especially true in the case of Diego and Santos.

They were so approachable, and the students so intrigued, that the group continued for another 45 minutes of Q&A in a nearby park after the cultural center had closed. For us, in terms of studying history and maybe learning a thing or two in the process, the issue is now an abstract one, to be treated very rationally. For those who lived through it, however, it will always be very specific and emotional.

This is certainly part of the lasting impression the Peace Works students will take away from their visit, according to some of their feedback during the farewell dinner on the last night of their stay. Even our lead guide Arnold, who was with the group every step of the way, explained that he learned new things about Guatemala.

We at Old Town were certainly happy to be able to help with making this trip happen, and are already looking forward to future trips.

La Fuente Peregrina

C

uando entras al monasterio franciscano de esta ciudad colonial (mejor conocido como las ruinas de San Francisco), puedes tener la impresión al observar el patio principal del claustro, que hace falta algo. Si te concentras un poco en el espacio y la forma, es fácil asumir que en su centro existió una fuente que pudo haber sido de grandes proporciones.

Si pensaste esto, tienes razón. Este monasterio tuvo una fuente que fue eliminada hasta el suelo.

Esta fuente pudo haber jugado con la belleza de las galerías arqueadas así como la sobre posición de atauriques tanto en las columnas de los arcos como en las bóvedas de las galerías.

La fuente no fue destruida por los terremotos, sino que fue trasladada hasta los terrenos mercedarios debido a que la utilización del templo mercedario seguía en uso después de los desastres geológicos que azotaron. El templo franciscano, en cambio, fue reducido a un espacio muy pequeño debido a que su nave principal cayó completamente. Algo similar le sucedió al monasterio, pues luego fue utilizado por familias para pernoctar y vivir.

En algunas fotografías de Eadweard Muybridge se aprecian casas dentro del atrio franciscano en el año de 1875. Posteriormente, en tiempos del presidente Jorge Ubico se declaró a La Antigua como monumento nacional, específicamente en 1944 y fue entonces que se tomó la decisión de quitar los escombros sobre el patio central del claustro.

Al quitar escombros (de casi 171 años), encontraron en la base de lo que fue la fuente y sus dimensiones coincidían con la fuente que se encuentra en la parte interna del convento mercedario.

s you walk into the Franciscan monastery of this colonial town (otherwise known as the ruins of San Francisco), you might have the impression as you walk through the patio of the first set of cloisters that something is missing.

If you really look at the space and the shape of the patio it’s easy to perceive that at one point a large fountain must have existed at its center.

If you noticed this, then you are right! This monastery at one time had a fountain that was then completely removed, down to the base. The fountain must have combined beautifully with the arched galleries and the stylized decoration of the columns and the vaulted roof.

The fountain wasn’t destroyed by the earthquakes that rocked the town – rather, it was relocated to land that formed part of the Temple of the Order of Mercy, which remained in use even after these natural disasters.

The Franciscan Temple – however – substantially diminished in size, due to the fact that its main nave caved in completely. A similar fate befell the Monastery, and it was later used by families to stay the night or to live.

In some of Eadweard Muybridge’s well known photos you can see little dwellings inside the atrium of the Franciscan ruins in 1875. Subsequently – in 1944 La Antigua was declared a National Monument during the time of Jorge Ubico’s presidency and the decision was made to clear up the rubble from the central patio of the Monastery’s cloisters.

Once the (almost 171-year-old) rubble was cleared up, the base of what had once been a great fountain was discovered and its dimensions appeared to coincide with the fountain that was located inside the Convent of the Order of Mercy.

Cuando examinas esta fuente, para lo cual solo basta con caminar al parque mercedario – a unas doce cuadras de la iglesia de San Francisco El Grande – encontrarás una cantidad de adornos que eran propios de la época colonial y del estilo de diseño distintivo, conocido como el sello del Arquitecto Diego de Porres.

El “Arquitecto Mayor” utilizaba sirenas como símbolo de castidad, algo común dentro de las órdenes mendicantes de hombres. Podrás encontrar las sirenas en la parte baja de la fuente, combinadas con flores lobuladas concéntricas y con niños desnudos que muestran un espacio que probablemente llevaba algún mensaje hoy ya ilegible.

El adorno de la fuente sube por medio de una columna almohadillada en el centro para ser rematada por una taza central, rodeada de rostros que caracterizan la salida del agua por sus bocas, como emitiendo algún sonido.

Esta fuente es un hermoso acompañante de las tardes de esparcimiento –tanto de visitantes como de propios – y vale la pena reflexionar que su estilo, es característico del barroco distintivo de La Antigua, simbolizado por el agua y su constante movimiento: en verdad un elemento arquitectónico único que merece la pena conservarse.

If you manage to take a look at this fountain (an easy feat to achieve – as you only need to walk 12 blocks from the San Francisco Church to find it) you will notice a large number of decorative touches unique to colonial times and with the distinct style recognized as the hallmark of the Architect Diego de Porres.

The ‘’Great Architect’’ (as he was known) used images of mermaids to represent chastity – a common image to be found amongst men’s Mendicant 48

Orders. You can see images of mermaids around the bottom of the fountain, combined with a concentric design of big-lobed flowers and a frieze of nude children who surround a space that at one time probably held some sort of message that has now rubbed off.

The decorations along the base of the fountain weave up along a bossed column and finish in a central basin, surrounded by depictions of faces from whose mouths water

falls; as if they were emitting some kind of sound.

A visit to this fountain is a perfect stop during an afternoon of leisure – for both tourists and locals – and it’s worth reflecting on the fact that its style is characteristic of the distinctive baroque style found across La Antigua. Symbolized by the water it contains and its constant movement, it is truly a unique architectural element that is worth protecting.

El sistema de filtración de agua Ecofiltro se produce a gran escala hoy en día en La Antigua, y más de 80,000 unidades han sido distribuidas en los últimos cinco años, algo que ha beneficiado a más de medio millón de guatemaltecos, especialmente en las áreas rurales. Esto ha contribuido significativamente al mejoramiento de la salud y la prevención de enfermedades gastrointestinales en niños y adultos.

Adicionalmente, Ecofiltro ha ayudado a reducir el número de árboles que anteriormente hubieran sido cortados y utilizados como leña para hervir el agua en las comunidades

rurales pues, en promedio, las familias guatemaltecas gastan alrededor de Q250 mensuales en leña para hervir el agua que necesitan en sus quehaceres cotidianos.

Ahora, Ecofiltro se ha unido con Cemaco para trabajar con una iniciativa que busca más agua potable para niños en áreas rurales del país. Cada vez que un cliente adquiera su Ecofiltro en CEMACO, Ecofiltro donará otro a escuelas rurales de Guatemala.

Además, CEMACO también apoyará a Ecofiltro en jornadas para la instalación de filtros en las escuelas, como parte de sus actividades de voluntariado.

Today, the Ecofiltro water filtration system is being produced in La Antigua on a large scale, and more than 80,000 units have been distributed in the last five years. To date, Ecofiltro has benefitted more than half a million Guatemalans, especially in rural areas, and has significantly contributed to health improvement and gastrointestinal illness prevention in both children and adults.

Additionally, Ecofiltro has helped to reduce the number of trees which previously would have been cut and used as firewood to boil water in rural communities. On average, Guatemalan families spend around Q250 monthly on firewood to be able to boil the water that they need for their daily tasks.

Ecofiltro has now joined forces with CEMACO with the 1x1 initiative, which seeks to take potable water to more children in rural areas of the country. Each time that a customer purchases an Ecofiltro from a CEMACO store, Ecofiltro will donate another one to a school in the rural areas of Guatemala.

CEMACO also supports Ecofiltro by participating in volunteering days where they install filters in rural schools.

Tiempo de Cardamomo en Guatemala

C

uando piensas en los recursos naturales sobresalientes y deliciosos productos que se dan en Guatemala, tal vez primero piensas en su café de fama mundial o su rico cacao, chiles picantes o sus granos tradicionales básicos como el maíz y el frijol.

Aquellos que han viajado más lejos dentro de Guatemala, sabrán que este país espectacular también es famoso por producir uno de los mejores cardamomos del mundo – a veces conocido como el “oro verde” de Guatemala.

Mientras que Guatemala es ahora el exportador y productor de cardamomo más importante del mundo, el cultivo es originario de la India, y de hecho fue traído aquí por los plantadores de café alemanes después de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Gran parte de la cosecha (más del 70%) se cultiva sobre grandes extensiones de la región de Alta Verapaz – un departamento de la región central de Guatemala – y una gran parte se exporta al Medio Oriente.

El cardamomo de Guatemala puede ser reconocido por sus pequeñas bayas verdes, su sabor dulce y picante característico con un toque cítrico y su olor fuerte y aromático. It’s Cardamom Time in Guatemala

hen you think of the outstanding natural resources and delicious products produced in Guatemala perhaps you would first think of their world-famous coffee or their rich cacao, their spicy chilies or their traditional staples of corn and beans.

Those of you who have travelled further afield within Guatemala will know that this spectacular country is also famous for producing some of the world’s best cardamom – sometimes known as the ‘green gold’ of Guatemala.

Whilst Guatemala is now the world’s largest exporter and producer of cardamom, the crop is native to India, and was in fact brought over here by German coffeeplanters after the First World War. Much of the crop (over 70%) is cultivated over huge swathes of the Alta Verapaz region – a central department of Guatemala – and a large proportion of it is exported to the Middle East.

Guatemalan cardamom can be recognized by its small green berries, its distinctive sweet & spicy flavor with a hint of citrus and its strong, aromatic smell. Often grown interweaved amongst coffee plants, cardamom plants usually bear fruit for around 3 or 4 consecutive years. The plants flower early on during the year (April-May), and usually ripen by early October.

Se exponen al sol—donde son cuidadosamente secados y blanqueados por cuatro a cinco días. La industria de cardamomo implica una intensa labor y cada paso del proceso debe llevarse a cabo con cuidado para asegurar que las plantas produzcan una cosecha de calidad.

En muchas zonas del mundo, el cardamomo es una de las especias más caras para comprar por peso – después de la vainilla y el azafrán – y es ampliamente utilizado en la cocina internacional.

The crop is accordingly gathered in October and November, although in exceptionally wet weather the harvest can protract into December. When the shoots bearing the clusters of berries are harvested, the berries are broken off close to the stem and spread out on carefully prepared floors, sometimes covered with mats, and are then exposed to the sun – where they are then carefully dried and bleached for four or five days. The cardamom industry is very labor intensive and each step of the process must be carried out carefully to ensure that the plants produce a quality crop.

In many areas of the world, cardamom is one of the most expensive spices to buy by weight – after vanilla and saffron - and it is widely used in international cuisine. map

Los antiguos griegos valoraban muy alto el cardamomo, y los médicos griegos Dioscórides e Hipócrates escribieron acerca de sus propiedades terapéuticas, elogiándolo como una ayuda digestiva. Debido a la demanda en la antigua Grecia y Roma, el comercio de cardamomo se convirtió en un negocio de lujo y así cardamomo fue una de las primeras especias que fue elegible para tener un impuesto de importación en el mundo antiguo.

A pesar de la cantidad de cardamomo producido para la exportación en la Guatemala hoy en día, a menudo las cosechas se han visto amenazadas por los caprichos del cambio climático y la precariedad de los agricultores pobres que dependen de los monocultivos.

The ancient Greeks thought highly of cardamom, and the Greek physicians Dioscorides and Hippocrates wrote about its therapeutic properties, praising it as a digestive aid. Due to demand in ancient Greece and Rome, the cardamom trade developed into a luxury business and cardamom was one of the first spices eligible for import tax in the Ancient World.

Despite the amount of cardamom produced for export in Guatemala today, it has often been threatened by the vagaries of climate change and the precariousness of poor farmers relying on monoculture crops. In previous years there have been protests amongst rural farmers over the plummeting prices of cardamom, but several Fair Trade organizations, small local businesses and local community cooperatives have helped to create projects to protect the livelihoods of small farmers.

l Festival del Aguacate es un evento importante que conmemorará los 100 años de la visita de Wilson Popenoe a Guatemala por primera vez – visita con la que descubriera los maravillosos aguacates que se dan en La Antigua y en Guatemala.

Fue durante su primer viaje que Wilson Popenoe se enamoró de La Antigua – regresando 14 años después a comprar una casa para restaurarla y abrirla al público en general. Gracias a él fue que en la ciudad se pudo redescubrir la belleza de la arquitectura colonial y se empezó a conservarla y restaurarla.

Ed Loyd y la Dra. Lory Snyder dictarán una conferencia cada uno durante el primer día del festival para poder presentarnos más de la historia de Wilson Popenoe.

Durante el segundo día, algunos de los mejores chefs de La Antigua, para que elaboren sus recetas más exquisitas con el mejor aguacate del mundo, el de La Antigua. Habrá dos premios para el ganador: uno otorgado por el público y otro otorgado por los expertos.

Cada uno de los chefs presentará un platillo salado, a base de aguacate como ingrediente principal. Cada chef recibirá un certificado de participación y los establecimientos participantes recibirán una placa conmemorativa.

El ganador premiado por el público obtendrá una medalla.

El premiado por los expertos obtendrá una medalla y un trofeo. A esto se añadirá la publicidad relacionada con el evento. Se invita a los participantes a que cedan los derechos de su respectiva receta, para que pueda ser mostrada en la publicación digital que se realizará al terminar el festival.

T

he Festival del Aguacate is an important event created to commemorate 100 years since the arrival of Wilson Popenoe to Guatemala and his discovery of the delicious avocados that grow in La Antigua and in Guatemala in general.

It was during his first trip over here that Wilson Popenoe fell in love with La Antigua – and returned 14 years later to buy and restore a house that he later opened to the general public.

Thanks to him, the town of La Antigua started to rediscover the beauty of its colonial architecture and this started to be conserved and restored.

During the Festival, on the first day, Ed Loyd and Dr. Lory Snyder will each give a conference to provide more information on the history of Wilson Popenoe.

On the second day, some of the best chefs of La Antigua will be invited to prepare their most exquisite dishes using the best avocado in the world – the avocado of La Antigua. There will be 2 prizes for the winner – one awarded by the public; one awarded by the experts.

Each one of the chefs will present a savory dish made with avocado as the main ingredient.

Each participating chef will also receive a certificate of participation and the participating establishments will be awarded a commemorative plaque.

Each participant is required to renounce their exclusive rights to their recipe, so that all the recipes can be included in the digital publication that will be presented at the end of the Festival.

El sommelier o capitán iniciará la ceremonia presentando la botella a la persona que la escogió.

Lo que deberás hacer para asegurarte que es la botella que escogiste es verificar la información en la etiqueta: la casa vinícola, la región o cepa(s), y la añada. Si apruebas la botella, el sommelier procederá con la apertura de esta y te ofrecerá el corcho. ¡No lo huelas! Solamente asegúrate que está en buen estado y que no se ha filtrado el vino, lo cual sería indicación que el aire se ha filtrado en tu botella durante su almacenamiento, echándolo a perder.

et’s suppose that, after navigating through the wine list at a restaurant, you’ve finally chosen the perfect bottle. What comes next?

The sommelier or wine steward will start the ceremony by presenting the bottle to the person who selected it. What you should do is make sure that it’s the bottle you chose by verifying the information on the label: the vineyard or winery, region or varietal(s), and the vintage. If you approve of the bottle, the sommelier will proceed to open it and will offer you the cork. Do not smell it! Just make sure that it’s in good condition and that no wine has filtered through; this would indicate that air has leaked into your bottle during storage, ruining it.

El motivo de este ritual es asegurarte que el vino no está echado a perder. Si lo está, olerá a enmohecido. No es necesario girar la copa para remover el vino a este punto; si lo haces disfrazarás el olor a moho con el oxígeno del aire. Si la primera sensación al olerlo es buena, entonces ya podrás girar tu copa para revelar plenamente el bouquet del vino y finalmente beber y disfrutar el primer sorbo. A continuación, el sommelier servirá el vino a todos comenzando por las damas, luego los caballeros, y finalmente la persona que haya ordenado la botella.

What you should smell is the tiny amount of wine that the sommelier will serve in your glass. The reason for this ritual is to make sure that the wine is not spoiled. If it is, it will smell moldy. It’s not necessary to swirl the glass and move the wine around at this point; if you do, you’ll disguise any musty odor with the oxygen from the air. If your first impression is good when you smell it, then you can swirl your glass to fully reveal the bouquet of the wine and finally drink the first sip and enjoy. Then the sommelier will serve everyone, starting with the ladies, then the men, and finally the person who ordered the bottle.

Now, the only thing left to do is to make a toast... and, of course, enjoy.

amos a preparar el tradicional fiambre chapín! Aquí te detallamos los ingredientes que necesitarás y la forma de prepararlo.

Ingredientes

Verduras: Zanahorias, pacayas tiernas, coliflor, ejotes, arvejas, habas tiernas, repollo, coles de bruselas, remolacha.

Carnes y Quesos: Cecina, gallina, carne de res, posta de marrano, pollo, chorizos negros y colorados, butifarras, jamones, salchichón y salchichas (en todas las variedades posibles), queso fresco, de capas, en rodaja amarillo y blanco y queso seco.

Adornos: Chiles pimientos, chiles chamborotes, lechuga escarola, rábanos , aceitunas verdes rellenas, alcaparras, perejil (picado), espárragos, elotitos, pepinillos, champiñones, maíz dulce, palmito, cebollitas curtidas, huevos duros (en rodajas) y sardinas (opcional).

Caldillo (Vinagreta): Agua, perejil, vinagre, aceite de oliva, laurel, jengibre, sal, mostaza, tomillo, ajo, cebolla y un poco de agua de cada uno de los productos enlatados.

Preparación 1. Guarda el maíz dulce, los champiñones, los pepinillos, elotitos, aceitunas, alcaparras y cebollas curtidas para utilizarlos como adorno. Corta las demás verduras en julianas. Separa luego las coliflores y las pacayas de sus troncos.

2. Coce todas las verduras antes mencionadas y mézclalas en un recipiente lo suficientemente grande como para que quepan todos los ingredientes.

3. Coce las carnes.

4. Agrega la mitad de los embutidos, carnes y quesos (todos en rodajas) y parte de algunos de los ingredientes que guardaste como adorno al recipiente y déjalo allí mientras preparas el caldillo.

5. Para el caldillo, licúa una parte de cada uno de los ingredientes enlatados y vegetales, además de agregar los ingredientes que te dimos para el caldillo. Deja caer el tomillo y el laurel a la mezcla preparada.

6. Agrega el caldillo al recipiente en el que ya tienes las verduras, carnes y quesos. Deja caer una buena cantidad de aceite de oliva, mueve todos los ingredientes cuidadosamente, mezclándolos y deja reposar durante la noche.

7. Coloca la mezcla en platos grandes y utiliza la mitad restante de las carnes y quesos para decorarlos. Finaliza con el huevo duro y los rábanos cortados en forma de flor al centro. Deja caer queso seco y perejil picado sobre cada plato.

otokids comenzó con 6 niños que vivían en los extensos vertederos de basura de la Ciudad de Guatemala hace 25 años. Desde entonces, la organización no lucrativa que utiliza la fotografía y el diseño gráfico para sacar a los niños de la pobreza, ha servido a más de un millar de niños y ha dejado el basurero para trabajar en áreas urbanas violentas de pandillas de Guatemala.

Centrándose en el compromiso a largo plazo y la enseñanza entre compañeros, Fotokids integra la formación vocacional con becas educativas tradicionales.

El personal (todos los graduados de Fotokids) han tenido sus fotografías expuestas en prestigiosas galerías y museos de catorce países, han aparecido en la BBC, Bravo y documentales australianos, han publicado libros y han aparecido en el New York Times, Washington Post, etc.

Más importante que esto, ellos creen en la transmisión de sus oportunidades para la próxima generación de niños.

Sus fotografías han evolucionado desde los trabajos en blanco y negro que dieron voz a los desafíos de vivir en la pobreza hasta a exploraciones artísticas y coloridas del mundo que han tenido el privilegio de experimentar.

Con proyectos en Tierra Nueva, Ciudad de Guatemala, Santiago Atitlán, las selvas de Honduras y con hijos de los trabajadores agrícolas de California, los miembros del equipo de Fotokids continúan fotografiando la exposición que resulta de sus obras – Without GPS, Traveling New Paths (Sin GPS, Viajando por Nuevos Caminos) – se inaugura el 9 de noviembre como un tributo a su trabajo duro y creatividad continua.

otokids began with 6 children living in Guatemala City’s sprawling garbage dump 25 years ago. Since then the non- profit that uses photography and graphic design to pull kids out of poverty has served over a thousand children and has left the dump to work in Guatemala’s violent urban gang areas.

Focusing on long term commitment and peer teaching, Fotokids integrates vocational training with traditional educational scholarships.

The staff (all Fotokids graduates) have had their photographs exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums in fourteen countries, appeared in BBC, Bravo and Australian documentaries, published books and have been featured in NYT, Washington Post etc., but most importantly, they believe in passing on their opportunities to the next generation of children.

Their photographs have evolved from the B&W work that gave a voice to the challenges of living in poverty to an artistic colorful exploration of the world they have had the privilege to experience.

With projects in Tierra Nueva, Guatemala City, Santiago Atitlán, the jungles of Honduras and with children of California’s agricultural workers, they continue to photograph, and the exhibition of the Staff’s work this month in the Panza Verde Gallery, Without GPS, Traveling New Paths opening Nov 9 is a tribute to their hard work and continued creativity.

El símbolo que se determina por la fecha de nuestro nacimiento consta de dos partes: un número de uno a 13 (uno por cada ciclo de cada mes en el que se cuenta el tiempo) y un Nahual (en base a uno de los 20 días considerados para cada mes nombrado en honor a varias deidades y ordenados sucesivamente). En el caso de los números: El número 1 se asocial con la unidad, con la soledad, la solidaridad, y nuevos comienzos. El número 2 es representativo de una dualidad, de dúos, de un deseo de unión y el balance entre lo bueno y lo malo. El número 3 es activo, tiene fuerza de voluntad, hace el esfuerzo y conserva el ritmo. El número 4 habla de sentimientos, de acciones, de direcciones y de dimensiones. Con el número 5 llega el empoderamiento, la comunicación y una habilidad increíble de escuchar y prestar atención. El número 6 representa la energía transformada en corriente de vida, en intuición y trabajo.

The symbol is determined by the date of our birth and it consists of two parts: a number from one to 13 (one for each cycle of each month in which time is counted) and a Nahual (based on one of the 20 days considered for each month named in honor of various deities).
