También celebrando el Carnaval, pero con una causa muy importante, está la Gala de CasaSito, y puedes conocer más de este evento en la página 14.

Para que puedas vivir al máximo la temporada en La Antigua, comenzando en la página 92 encontrarás nuestra sección especial de Cuaresma, con útil información y mapas para poder encontrar las procesiones durante estos cinco domingos que marcan una de las celebraciones más importantes en nuestra ciudad.

This is going to be one of the busiest Februaries in quite a while. With Ash Wednesday on the 10th of the month, Lent begins. Just before that is Carnaval, when – besides the cascarones and the pica-pica – there are costumes to consider, and on page 60 you can learn about a place to find some amazing ones. Also celebrating Carnival, but for an important cause, is CasaSito with their spectacular Gala, and you can learn more about this event on page 14.

So that you can experience the season in La Antigua to the utmost, starting on page 92 you’ll find our special section about Lent, with useful information as well as maps to find the processions during these five Sundays which mark one of the most important celebrations in our city.

Among the many events of the month, I can’t forget to wish all of Qué Pasa’s readers a very happy Valentine’s Day – or as we call it here in Guatemala, the Day of Love and Friendship.

Un Baile de Máscaras en La Antigua

E

l Baile de Máscaras en La Antigua es un viaje en el tiempo y una celebración de vida en la hermosa e histórica ciudad colonial de La Antigua Guatemala. Durante varios años, el baile ha reunido a mucha gente fascinante para una noche de elegancia, música maravillosa, exquisita comida, y mucho deleite – todo con el noble propósito de apoyar al pueblo de Guatemala.

Este evento único se ha convertido en una ocasión muy esperada para aquellos que no solo disfrutan del socializar, sino también quieren hacer su parte invirtiendo en el futuro de los guatemaltecos. Este año, el baile tendrá lugar el viernes 26 de febrero desde las 7 PM hasta la 1 AM en Ezenario Histórico en la 4a Calle Oriente de La Antigua.

Aunque un disfraz no es absolutamente esencial para el evento (sin embargo, ¡sí se requiere una máscara!), muchos de los que asistirán se vestirán en disfraces relacionados con el tema: Mascarada Veneciana. Este año, habrá cuatro premios otorgados: Mejor Traje Veneciano Tradicional, Mejor Traje de

While a fancy-dress costume is not absolutely essential for the event (however, masks are required!), many attendees will wear costumes related to the theme: Venetian Masquerade. This year, there will be four prizes awarded: Best Traditional Venetian Costume, Best Venetian-Style Costume with a Guatemalan Twist, Best Mask, and Most Creative or Unique Costume.

All proceeds from the event will be invested in CasaSito’s youth development program. Over the past 11 years, CasaSito has made important contributions aimed at increasing opportunities for young Guatemalans.

n esta época de Carnaval, si caminas por el bullicioso mercado municipal de La Antigua – lleno de vida y de gente – vas a observar que en todas partes están a la venta unos pequeños, frágiles y coloridos tesoros. Puede que no tengas ni idea qué son o para qué propósito fueron creados, pero ciertamente vas a sentirte atraído a los colores tan brillantes y los diseños tan exuberantes. Estos objetos se llaman cascarones, y son justo lo que parecen: cáscaras de huevo que han sido vaciadas y decoradas, luego llenas de confeti (que acá en Guatemala se llama pica-pica). ¿Cómo se desarrolló esta curiosa tradición? La idea de utilizar las cáscaras de huevos rellenas con un “regalito” proviene supuestamente de Italia, donde hace siglos – como gesto de afección – un hombre podría lanzar a una dama que admiraba un cascarón lleno de perfume. En Guatemala, sin embargo, el perfume ha sido reemplazado por la pica-pica, y hoy en día se trata más de amistad que del amor.

Para fabricar estas pequeñas obras de arte, se perforan las cáscaras de los huevos con un alfiler y se les vacían de su contenido. Una vez secas, se pintan y se decoran, y luego se llenan con la pica-pica y los hoyos se sellan con papel de china de colores. La tradición en Guatemala es romper los cascarones sobre las cabezas de amigos como broma y celebración carnavalesca, pero a veces se utilizan en otras ocasiones de celebración como cumpleaños y bodas.

Los cascarones están a la venta en el mercado y algunas tiendas durante las semanas anteriores al Carnaval. t this time of year when Carnival is on its way, if you take a stroll through La Antigua’s bustling municipal market – filled with life and people – you’ll notice some colorful but fragile treasures for sale everywhere. You may not have a clue what they are or why they were created, but you’ll certainly be drawn to their brilliant colors and flamboyant designs. These objects are called cascarones, and they’re exactly what they look like: eggshells that have been emptied and colorfully decorated, then filled with confetti (which is called pica-pica here in Guatemala).

How did this curious tradition develop? The idea of using eggshells filled with a “little gift” supposedly comes from Italy, where centuries ago – as a gesture of affection – a man might toss a cascarón filled with perfume at a lady whom he admired. In Guatemala, however, the perfume has been replaced by pica-pica, and today it’s more about friendship than about love.

To make these tiny works of art, a hole is poked in the eggshell with a needle and the contents are emptied.

Once dried, painted and decorated, the cascarón is then filled with confetti, and the hole is sealed with brightly colored tissue paper. The tradition in Guatemala is to break the shells over friends’ heads as a prank and a celebration of Carnival, but they’re sometimes used for other celebratory occasions like birthdays and weddings.

Cascarones are sold at the market and in some shops around town in the weeks leading up to Carnival. Everyone is invited to join in the fun – just remember that if a cascarón is broken over your head, it means good luck.

So let other people give you a bit of luck, and while you’re at it, go ahead and smash a few cascarones yourself in order to bring some good luck to the lives of others!

Rhinos

en el Campo en La Antigua

ara los residentes de La Antigua, la conclusión anual del fútbol americano usualmente llega cuando el Super Bowl ha terminado y ya no hay más partidos en la televisión ni en línea. Todo eso cambió el año pasado cuando nació el equipo Antigua Rhinos que se unió a la Asociación Guatemalteca de Fútbol Americano (AGFA).

La historia de la AGFA se inició en el año 2000 con Tom Kelly, un ex jugador de fútbol americano que quería llevar a Guatemala la cultura estadounidense del fútbol. Al principio, empezó con una donación de 25 conjuntos de equipo a la Universidad Rafael Landívar, junto con una clínica de fútbol americano de dos días. Desde entonces, la cultura del fútbol americano en Guatemala ha crecido, desarrollándose tanto para crear una liga de contacto completo y una liga de fútbol de bandera, así como una academia de fútbol americano.

A finales del 2014, Darcy Johnston y Marco Antonio Cobar se conocieron por un amigo mutuo con una visión compartida de traer el fútbol americano a La Antigua. Se dispusieron a convertir esta visión en realidad, y lo que siguió fue como un guión de película. La diversa población de La Antigua produjo una mezcla de jugadores tanto locales como extranjeros – algunos con poca o ninguna experiencia.

or La Antigua residents, the yearly end of American football usually comes once the Super Bowl is over and there are no more games to watch on TV or online.

This all changed last year as the Antigua Rhinos came into existence and joined the Guatemalan American Football League (Asociación Guatemalteca de Football Americano – AGFA).

The story of AGFA began in 2000 with Tom Kelly, an ex-football player who wanted to bring American football culture to Guatemala. He first started with a donation of 25 sets of equipment to Universidad Rafael Landívar along with a two-day football clinic. Since then, the American football culture in Guatemala has grown, developing a full-contact league and a flag-football league, as well as spawning a football academy.

In late 2014, Darcy Johnston and Marco Antonio Cobar were brought together by a mutual acquaintance with a shared vision of bringing American football to La Antigua. They set out to bring this vision to life, and what followed was like a script from a movie. La Antigua’s diverse cultural population brought together a blend of local and foreign players – some with little to no experience.

The Rhinos had no practice field, no equipment, and no head coach, but their high-flying offense and suffocating defense proved to be a challenge for the competition. The Rhinos showed a dominant performance by outscoring opponents by 273 points during the regular season and having a 9-1 record.

Reaching the Maya Bowl championship game, the Antigua Rhinos faced the Guatemala Bulldogs – the previous year’s champions – but were upset in the closely contested matchup with a final score of 13-6.

The Rhinos plan to continue this momentum into the 2016 season, with a final goal of bringing the championship trophy to the Colonial City.

Algo Viejo, Algo Nuevo y Algo Estúpido

Something Old, Something New, and Something Stupid ¡Bienvenidos a febrero, mis Fieles Lectores!

Una de las tradiciones de Guatemala es que, para deleitar los paladares de los gastrónomos, los jueves hay paches para disfrutar. Estos primos del tamal – hechos con una masa a base de papas en lugar de una de maíz – son una de las razones por las que muchos chapines esperan los jueves. Aunque esta delicia gastronómica semanal – el jueves de paches – es una tradición que data de hace mucho tiempo, hay una adición mucho más reciente a la agenda del jueves está llevando alegría a los activistas contra la corrupción y miedo a algunos de los políticos más viles del país.

La CICIG, la Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala, ha estado trabajando con los investigadores y fiscales del Ministerio Público para localizar, arrestar y enjuiciar a los funcionarios públicos por todo tipo de corrupción.

Durante el año pasado, la CICIG y el MP han estado en sobremarcha, arrestando a docenas de funcionarios por delitos que van desde la malversación hasta el tráfico de influencias. La sincronización de los allanamientos y los anuncios oficiales posteriores aparecían – casi semanalmente – los jueves, y de ahí el meme

popular en la cultura de los redes sociales: Olvidate de los paches... ¡hoy es jueves de CICIG! Durante los últimos meses del año pasado, el ritmo de arrestos se desaceleró, y seguramente muchos de quienes con toda probabilidad deberían haber sido detenidos – pero quienes no lo habían sido... todavía – probablemente habían empezado a respirar un poco más fácil. Todo eso cambió un jueves a mediados de enero.

Acá en La Antigua, pocos días después que la nueva alcaldesa de la ciudad, Susy Asensio, asumiera el cargo, la Policía Nacional Civil y el Ministerio Público, junto con la coordinación de la CICIG, llevaron a cabo un allanamiento temprano en la mañana y arrestaron a Edgar Ruiz, el ex alcalde de la ciudad quien había dejado el cargo menos de una semana antes. Fue capturado junto con otros 10 funcionarios públicos acusados de haber malversado Q20 millones (alrededor de US $2.6 millones) en pagos para obras de infraestructura pública que nunca fueron hechas. Hace poco más de tres años, el Sr. Ruiz había ascendido del Consejo Municipal para convertirse en alcalde interino de La Antigua cuando el alcalde electo de la ciudad, el Dr. Adolfo Vivar, fue detenido por múltiples

cargos de lavado de dinero, abuso de autoridad, asociación ilícita, fraude, obstrucción de justicia y negligencia en el cumplimiento del deber. Esto ahora significa que están en la cárcel los dos jefes ejecutivos más recientes de la Ciudad de las Perpetuas Rosas.

Después de estos arrestos y el anuncio de que la CICIG y el MP están investigando la corrupción en cientos de municipios de todo el país, la nueva administración de La Antigua tiene aún más razones para demostrar que los próximos cuatro años no serán lo de siempre.

Aunque tengo la esperanza de que – con una gestión adecuada – nuestra querida ciudad verá un vuelco en sus fortunas durante los próximos cuatro años, estoy tratando de no ser “demasiado esperanzador” (ve mi columna en la edición del mes pasado).

La nueva alcaldesa es arquitecta y urbanista, y parece tener a su alrededor un círculo de personas inteligentes y educadas. Pero me preocupa que, incluso con las mejores intenciones, pueden tener un conocimiento más teórico que práctico. Y ahora, en el primer par de semanas de la nueva administración, parece que están haciendo todo lo posible para no hacerme ilusiones. ¿Qué pasó? Bueno, antes de que te chismosee, recordá que cualquiera que

One of the traditions of Guatemala is that, on Thursdays, to the delight of gastronomes’ palates, there are paches to be enjoyed. These cousins of the tamal – made with a potato-based dough instead of a maize-based one – are one of the reasons that many chapines look forward to Thursdays. While this weekly gastronomic treat, jueves de paches, is a long-standing tradition, a much more recent addition to Thursday’s schedule is bringing joy to anti-corruption activists and fear to some of the most dastardly politicians in the country.

CICIG, the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala, has been working with investigators and prosecutors in the country’s Ministerio Público to track down, arrest, and prosecute public officials for all manner of corruption. Over the past year, the CICIC and the MP have been in overdrive, arresting dozens of government functionaries and elected officials on charges of everything from embezzlement to influence trafficking. The timing of the arrest raids and the subsequent official announcements seemed to come – on an almost weekly basis – on Thursdays, hence the popular-culture meme of Olvidate de los paches... ¡hoy es jueves de CICIG! (Forget about paches, today is CICIG Thursday!)

During the final couple of months of last year, however, the pace of arrests slowed, and surely many of those who in all probability should have been arrested – but who hadn’t been... yet – had probably begun to breathe a bit easier.

But all that changed on a Thursday in mid-January.

haya pasado algún tiempo en Guatemala sabe que los bancos de este país parecen estar enamorados de la burocracia y el papeleo. Si incluso los turistas saben esto, se podría pensar que los funcionarios de la nueva administración de la ciudad lo sabrían, también. Pero en su afán de deshacerse de los funcionarios que habían servido en la administración anterior, evidentemente se olvidaron. Voy a ponerlo de esta manera: es una idea bastante tonta despedir a todos los que pueden firmar cheques, cuando las firmas de los nuevos funcionarios no estarán aprobadas por el banco por un par de semanas.

Básicamente, la ciudad no podría pagar sus facturas, no podría pagar a sus empleados, no podría hacer nada financieramente hasta tal vez después de principios de febrero cuando el banco apruebe las nuevas firmas en las cuentas de La Muni. Podrían ser cortados los servicios de Internet y teléfono de los varios

departamentos municipales (y ya pudo haber ocurrido) debido al retraso de los pagos. Y los acuerdos que se tienen que hacer casi de inmediato debido a que las celebraciones de la Cuaresma de este año son muy tempranas – comienzan el 10 de febrero – pueden retrasarse debido a la posible incapacidad del Ayuntamiento de escribir un cheque.

Como dije, espero que esto no es más que un lamentable error y solo un caso de exceso de celo (y no un ejemplo de la incompetencia que los antigüeños pueden esperar en el futuro de la administración de la ciudad).

Voy a suspender mi opinión hasta después de la Pascua para ver cómo la nueva administración se encarga de los mayores eventos del año en la ciudad: la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa. Por favor, unite conmigo en cruzar los dedos para tener buena suerte... ¡La Antigua seguramente la necesita!

Here in La Antigua, just days after the city’s new Mayor, Susy Asensio, took office, the National Civil Police and the MP, along with coordination from the CICIG, swept into town in an early-morning raid and arrested Edgar Ruiz, the city’s former mayor who had been out of office less than a week.

He was captured along with 10 other public officials on charges of having embezzled Q20 million (about US$2.6 million) in payments for public infrastructure works that were never done. Mr. Ruiz had ascended from the City Council to become La Antigua’s interim mayor a little over three years ago, when the city’s elected mayor, Dr. Adolfo Vivar, was arrested on multiple counts of money laundering, abuse of authority, conspiracy, fraud, obstruction of justice, and dereliction of duty. This now means that the two most recent chief executives of the City of Perpetual Roses are in jail.

After these arrests and the announcement that the CICIG and the MP are investigating corruption in hundreds of Guatemala’s municipios, La Antigua’s new administration has even more reason to prove that the next four years won’t be business as usual.

While I’m hopeful that – with proper management – our beloved city will see a turn-around in its fortunes during the next four years, I’m trying hard not to be “over-hopeful” (see my column in last month’s issue). The new Mayor is an architect and urban planner, and she seems to have around her a coterie of intelligent, educated people. But I worry that, even with the best of intentions, they may have more theoretical knowledge than applied know-how. And now in the first couple of weeks of the new administration, it appears

they’re doing their best to not get my hopes up.

What happened? Well, before I spill the beans, remember that anyone who has spent any time at all in Guatemala knows that the banks in this country seem to thrive on bureaucracy and red tape. If even tourists know this, you’d think that officials in the city’s new administration would know it, too. But in their zeal to get rid of officials who had served in the previous administration, they evidently forgot. Let me put it this way: it’s kind of a dumb idea to fire everyone who can sign checks, when the signatures of the new officials won’t be approved by the bank for a couple of weeks.

Basically, the city couldn’t pay any bill, couldn’t pay any employee, couldn’t do anything financially until possibly after the beginning of February when the bank approves the new signatures on City Hall accounts. Internet and phone service for various city departments might be cut off (and may already have been) because of late payments. And the arrangements that have to be made almost immediately because of this year’s early Lenten celebrations – which begin on February 10th – could be delayed because of the inability of City Hall to write a check.

Like I said, I hope this is nothing more than an unfortunate error and just a case of overzealousness (and not an example of the incompetence that Antigüeños can expect from city government in the future). I’m gonna reserve my judgment until after Easter to see how the new administration handles the city’s biggest events of the year: Lent and Holy Week. Please join me in crossing your fingers for good luck... La Antigua could sure use it!

he Instituto Guatemalteco Americano has good news for opera lovers. The 2015-2016 season of The Met (Live in HD) is in progress, and the live broadcasts from New York are being shown at the Dick Smith Theater at I.G.A. in Guatemala City.

The annual series of opera broadcasts places The Metropolitan Opera as the leading provider of alternative cinematic content, and it's the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale.

When the series began in 2006, The Met was the first arts organization to experiment with worldwide high definition broadcasts of such content. Since then, the program has grown each season.

Thanks to programs like this, audiences around the world have access to live performances of world-class opera.

Stars of The Met act as hosts for the HD series, conducting live cast interviews, providing information about the individual productions, and revealing to the viewers the secrets of what happens backstage.

a Antigua Galería de Arte presenta obras del artista guatemalteco Josué Hernández en una exposición individual titulada Travesía de Sueños. Esta colección de acuarelas es una interpretación visual del denominado “Sueño Americano” y las metas del individuo de convertirse en alguien importante en la sociedad.

Con imágenes coloridas, las obras del artista expresan – de una manera muy poética – todos los sacrificios que la gente hace al mudarse a un país extranjero donde se debe adoptar un nuevo idioma y nuevas tradiciones, y donde incluso tal vez tiene que sacrificar su propia identidad para captar el sueño americano.

En estas obras, las alusiones hechas a las aves reflexionan sobre las formas en que estas congregan al migrar – para ayuda y protección y con el fin de tener una mejor oportunidad de supervivencia – de la misma manera que los seres humanos se reúnen y se apoyen mutuamente para lograr sus sueños.

La muestra presenta más de 15 nuevas acuarelas tanto en formatos pequeños como medianos.

La Antigua Galería de Arte

a Antigua Galería de Arte presents the work of Guatemalan artist Josué Hernández in a one-man exhibition entitled Travesía de Sueños (Voyage of Dreams). This collection of watercolors is a visual interpretation of the so-called “American Dream” and the individual’s goals of becoming someone important in society.

With colorful images, the artist’s works express – in a very poetic manner – all the sacrifices that people make by moving to a foreign country where they must adopt a new language and new traditions, and where they may even have to sacrifice their own identity in order to grasp the American Dream.

In these artworks, the allusions made to birds reflect on the ways that they flock together when migrating – for support and protection and in order to have a better chance of survival – in the same way that humans gather and support each other to achieve their dreams.

The show presents more than 15 new watercolors in both small and medium formats.

The exhibition opens with the artist in attendance on Saturday, February 13th from 4 to 7 PM at La Antigua Galería de Arte on Calle del Arco, 5a Avenida Norte #29, La Antigua (MAP C4).

iños de Guatemala (NDG) es una ONG holandés/guatemalteca que se dedica a romper el ciclo de la pobreza y empoderar a las comunidades locales cerca de La Antigua. La organización – fundada en el 2006 – cuenta con tres escuelas y brinda educación a 430 niños de entre 4 y 14 años de edad.

La primera escuela se llama Nuestro Futuro y está ubicada en Ciudad Vieja, un viaje de unos 10 minutos en camioneta desde La Antigua. La escuela está situada alto en las faldas del Volcán de Agua, entre algunos de los barrios menos desarrollados de esta ciudad. Al entrar a la escuela, la primera embestida es una ola de ruido, e inmediatamente después viene una de niños, cuando corren a investigar quién es este nuevo visitante a su escuela. Las caras sonrientes brillan contra un fondo de edificios coloridos, decorados con pinturas y dibujos de los alumnos.

El enfoque de NDG es la educación, los estudiantes cuentan con clases de alta calidad proporcionadas por maestros guatemaltecos bien entrenados en todas las materias requeridas por el plan de estudios nacional. Esto incluye clases de computación, así como lecciones de inglés y uno de los idiomas mayas. Los niños también reciben clases en una amplia variedad de otras áreas, proporcionadas por los voluntarios que vienen a trabajar en la escuela. iños de Guatemala (NDG) is a Dutch/Guatemalan NGO that works to break the cycle of poverty and empower local communities around La Antigua. The organization – founded in 2006 – has three schools and provides education to 430 children between 4 and 14 years of age.

The first school is called Nuestro Futuro (Our Future), and it's in Ciudad Vieja, about a 10-minute bus ride from La Antigua. The school is located high on the slopes of Volcán de Agua, among some of that city’s least developed neighborhoods. When you enter the school you’re hit first by a wave of noise, then by children, as they rush to investigate the newest visitor to the school. The smiling faces shine against a backdrop of colorful buildings, decorated by the students' paintings and drawings.

As the focus of NDG is education, students are provided with high-quality classes from well-trained Guatemalan teachers in all subjects required by the national curriculum. This includes computer classes, as well as lessons in English and one of the Mayan languages. The kids also receive classes in a wide variety of other areas from volunteers who come to work at the school. These workshops range from photography and yoga to art, zumba, and still other languages.

The idea is to give the students a love of learning, to foster creative and curious minds that will seek out new knowledge and ideas on their own. It also takes advantage of the global reach of the volunteer program. Some come from all over the world to work at the schools, while others come from as nearby as La Antigua.

NDG is currently looking to expand its local volunteer program with people who are living in Guatemala and who can commit to a few hours a week. It’s an incredible opportunity not only to work with a growing organization, but also to build up valuable experience and create lifelong friendships with wonderful students.

here are many fine restaurants in La Antigua, representing cuisines from around the world, but for someone who has dined from Vancouver to London, San Francisco to Barcelona, New York to Lima, and São Paulo to Madrid, I see no one else here in La Antigua who gives a serious nudge to the envelope like this rising star in the world of haute cuisine, Alberto Blanco, and his restaurant Angeline.

While there are many fine, mouth-watering experiences to be had while dining in this historic city, Alberto Blanco has decided that he’s going to make a go at creating one of the best fine-dining experiences anywhere ever. What separates Alberto from his peers, at least in my opinion, is his willingness to integrate and experiment with local ingredients. Alberto’s passion is real – as though he has been chosen from on-high to deliver us, the unwashed, a paradise of exultant dining.

His is the only ongoing and evolving tasting-menu experience in La Antigua, the flavors presented are

consistently sublime, and what is especially unparalleled about Angeline is its curious and surprising, vast and ever-expanding wine list.

Alberto has reached across the globe to some of the world’s finest wine-producing regions, and for most of these areas he can provide their finest offerings or some of their best values for his guests. No one else offers wines from Washington, for example, a wine region that’s little known outside of the Pacific Northwest of the United States but which boasts of some of the best Bordeaux blends and southern Rhône-style varietals anywhere. Napa Valley is also represented, as is the Willamette Valley in Oregon, along with other excellent wines, including some superb Italians, Bordeaux, and Riojas – to mention just a few.

Most assuredly, what sets Angeline and its proprietor and sommelier Alberto Blanco apart from his peers here in Guatemala is the wine list, a tome of treasures. It’s a treasure map to Alberto’s vision of superb wines, fine dining, and excellent service.

Disfraces para Carnaval

n día antes del inicio de la Cuaresma el Miércoles de Ceniza, tradicionalmente se celebra el martes de Carnaval – este año, el martes 9 de febrero.

En muchas escuelas, barrios y pueblos acá en Guatemala, los niños se disfrazan y juegan con pica-pica (papel cortado finamente o en pequeñas ruedas, o sea confetti) y cascarones (cáscaras de huevo pintadas de colores y rellenas de pica-pica).* Durante el Carnaval, los disfraces están a la orden del día, y uno de los mejores lugares en el país para conocer más de los disfraces es en el taller donde se elaboran los hermosos disfraces para muchas de las actividades y celebraciones tradicionales que llaman la atención tanto de locales como de extranjeros. Qué Pasa encontró el taller gracias a la atención que recibieron los disfraces que presentamos en nuestro artículo acerca de la celebración del convite en Chichicastenango (en la edición de diciembre del 2015). Conversamos con el propietario del taller artesanal Artes Santa Elena – A.S.E., Jorge Xiquin Aguilar, de la segunda generación de artistas quienes crean increíbles máscaras y disfraces – no solo para convites, sino para cualquier ocasión.

Jorge explica que en los años 80 su padre, Ernesto Xiquin Batz, decidió tener un espacio en donde pudiera elaborar y vender máscaras en Santa Cruz del Quiché.

En ese tiempo, la media máscara – es decir, aquellas que cubren solo el rostro – costaba unos Q60 cada una, y las de tol – como comúnmente se les conoce a las máscaras completas que cubren toda la cabeza – tenían un precio de unos Q200. Obviamente los precios han cambiado desde entonces, y hoy en día varían dependiendo de la figura a realizar. El proceso de elaboración de las máscaras toma de 9 a 12 días, y se elaboran por pareja (ya sean dos iguales o de diferentes personajes).

Los materiales con que las máscaras se elaboran también han cambiado con los años, pues en los inicios del taller, las máscaras se realizaban con moldes de yeso o cemento, aplicándoles una pequeña película de cebo que tenía la función de ayudar a desmoldarlas. Los detalles eran luego perfeccionados con una mezcla de cartón molido, cola blanca y yuquilla.

ne day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday is the traditional celebration of Carnaval.

This day is variously known in English-speaking countries as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, or Mardi Gras, and this year it falls on Tuesday, February 9th. In many towns, neighborhoods, and schools here in Guatemala, children dress up in costumes and play around with pica-pica (finely cut paper, i.e. confetti) and cascarones (colorfully painted eggshells filled with pica-pica).* During Carnival, costumes are the order of the day, and one of the best places in the country to learn more about these outfits is at the workshop where beautiful costumes

are made – costumes that are used as part of many of the country’s traditional celebrations and activities that attract both international and domestic tourists. Qué Pasa found the workshop thanks to the attention received by the costumes in our article about Chichicastenango’s convite. (You can find that article in our December 2015 issue.) We spoke with the owner of the artisanal workshop Artes Santa Elena – A.S.E., Jorge Xiquin Aguilar, a member of the second generation of artists who create incredible masks and costumes – not just for convites, but for any occasion.

proceso es más práctico y se le puede dar un mejor acabado a cada pieza. La pintura es uno de los últimos pasos, y toma casi un día completo dependiendo de la complejidad de las máscaras y los detalles que llevan. El resto del disfraz se elabora con materiales nacionales o importados al gusto del cliente, utilizando cueros, plumas, pieles, peluches y una gran cantidad de accesorios para complementar el diseño.

En el taller, están muy orgullosos de todos los trajes que han realizado, y conservan especialmente el recuerdo de aquellos que les han solicitado para actividades de renombre. Tal es el caso de uno que elaboraron para Loraine Quinto quien representó a Guatemala en Indonesia en el concurso Miss Mundo del año 2013. En el año 2014 el taller participó en la Bienal de Arte Paiz con una pieza titulada “Tributo a la Mujer Maya Guatemalteca” que fue incluida en el libro de obras TRANSvisible de la Bienal.

Cada traje que elaboran los del taller fácilmente puede ser considerado una obra de arte, y es una muestra fantástica del gran trabajo que realizan los artesanos guatemaltecos.

– cost about Q60 each, and a tol – a full mask that covers the entire head – had a price of around Q200.

Prices have changed since then, of course, and today they vary depending on the character to be made and the complexity. The mask-making process takes between 9 and 12 days, and the masks are made in pairs (either two identical masks or masks of two different characters).

Over the years, the materials that the masks are made from have changed, as well. When the workshop began, masks were made using cement or plaster molds with a thin film of lard on them to help remove the masks more easily. The details were then sculpted from, and applied with, a mixture of ground-up cardboard pulp, white glue, and cornstarch.

Today, with the many types of raw materials that can be used to produce masks (like plasticine, putty, and fiberglass), the process is more practical and it gives a better finish to each piece.

Painting is one of the last steps, and it takes almost a full day depending on the complexity of the mask and

its details. The rest of the costume is made to order from domestic or imported materials such as leather, real fur or fake fur, feathers, and with numerous accessories and final touches.

At the workshop, while they’re very proud of all the costumes they’ve made, they have a special fondness for those that they’ve made for important public events. One of these is the outfit that was made for Loraine Quinto who represented Guatemala in Indonesia at the Miss World contest in 2013. In 2014, the workshop participated in the Paiz Biennial of Art with a piece entitled “Tributo a la Mujer Maya Guatemalteca” (“Tribute to the Maya Women of Guatemala”) that was included in TRANSvisible, the book showcasing the best of the Biennial’s artworks.

Every costume that is made at the workshop can easily be considered a work of art, and each is a fantastic example of some of the great work being done by Guatemalan artisans.

De fácil preparación – es básicamente limonada a la que se le agregan pequeñas semillas conocidas como “chan” (que en otros lugares se conoce como chía) – y que se vende en muchos de los puestos de comida que podrás encontrar en los parques de las iglesias durante el día. Es refrescante y además está llena de todas las bondades que esas pequeñas semillitas (que se hinchan al entrar en contacto con líquidos) te pueden dar.

Lemonade with Chia Seeds

Although it’s not exclusively a Lenten drink, limonada con chan is by far more popular during this time of year. Easy to prepare – it’s basically lemonade with small chia seeds (known in Guatemala as chan) added – it’s sold at many food stalls that can be found during the day in the parks outside of churches. Known by various names in English (like “snow cones” or “shaved ice”), nothing is quite as satisfying on a hot day as being able to find a granizada vendor and enjoy the taste of this chilly treat. Granizadas are simply finely shaved ice doused with different flavors of syrups (usually grape, strawberry, pineapple, or orange) and sometimes topped with fruit. Over the years, other flavor combinations have also been invented, including one with lime, salt, and pepitoria (a ground spice made from toasted pumpkin seeds), as well as a non-alcoholic version of a frozen Bloody Mary with tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, and spices. events, panes are a convenient and delicious option for a meal or simply a snack. El Inicio de la Cuaresma:

Miércoles de Ceniza

E

l miércoles 10 de febrero, en casi todas las iglesias católicas de casi todo el país, se celebra el Miércoles de Ceniza. Para muchas tradiciones cristianas, este es el día que marca el inicio de la Cuaresma, los 40 días de preparación para vivir la pasión, la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús.

La ceniza (del latín cinis) es bastante simbólica. Como resultado de la combustión de un objeto por el fuego, simboliza la fragilidad humana y enseña lecciones acerca de las pruebas y la fe. La ceniza que se impone el Miércoles de Ceniza proviene de la quema de los ramos o las palmas que fueron utilizadas para celebrar el Domingo de Ramos del año anterior. Las familias devotas guardan dichos ramos durante todo el año, y los llevan a la iglesia unos días previos a la celebración.

Después de la homilía, el sacerdote bendice las cenizas y las rocía con agua bendita para luego proceder a imponerlas, formando una cruz en la frente de los fieles, diciendo cualquiera de estas dos frases: “Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio” o “Polvo eres y en polvo te convertirás”.

Se dice que antiguamente los judíos se cubrían con ceniza como señal de sacrificio. También se dice que durante los primeros siglos de la iglesia cristiana, quienes tenían la voluntad de convertirse utilizaban hábito penitencial y se ponían ceniza en la cabeza. En los siglos IX y X, los obispos impusieron el cilicio y la ceniza a los penitentes. Fue en el siglo XI que la iglesia romana extendió este uso más allá de ser solo para los penitentes hasta ser para la comunidad entera.

La imposición de la ceniza es un acto tanto eclesial como de fe. Se lleva a cabo en una celebración comunitaria, y marca el comienzo de una temporada de fe privada y de demostraciones públicas de ella.

The Beginning of Lent: Ash Wednesday

n Wednesday, February 10th, in almost all the Catholic churches everywhere around Guatemala, Ash Wednesday (Miércoles de Ceniza) is celebrated. For many Christian traditions, this day marks the beginning of Lent, the period of 40 days of preparation to relive the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Ash (ceniza in Spanish, from the Latin cinis) is quite symbolic. As the result of an object’s combustion by fire, it symbolizes human frailty and teaches lessons about testing and faith. The ash that is used on Ash Wednesday comes from burning the palm fronds that were used the previous year to celebrate Palm Sunday. Devout families store these palm branches through the year and then take them to the church a few days before the celebration.

After the homily, the priest blesses the ashes and sprinkles them with holy water.

He then proceeds to use the ash to mark a cross on the forehead of each of the faithful, saying either of these two sentences: “Repent and believe in the Gospel,” or “Dust you are and to dust shall you return.”

It’s said that in times past, Jews would cover themselves with ashes as a sign of sacrifice. It’s also said that during the first centuries of the Christian church, those who were willing to convert wore penitential habits and put ashes on their heads.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, bishops imposed sackcloth and ashes on penitents. It was in the 11th century that the Roman Catholic Church extended this use beyond being only for penitents to being for the entire community.

The marking of the cross on the forehead with ashes is both an ecclesial act and an act of faith. It takes place within a communal celebration, and it also marks the beginning of a season of private faith and its public display.

Cuaresma Como la Cuaresma se conoce al período consistente en cuarenta días a partir del miércoles que sigue al martes de carnaval – el Miércoles de Ceniza.

Lent

The time of year known as Lent (or Cuaresma in Spanish) is a period of forty days starting on the Wednesday that follows Mardi Gras – Ash Wednesday. These forty days are regarded by many Christians as a period of preparation in which the life of Jesus is celebrated before the final week (Holy Week) when the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus are commemorated.

There’s evidence that Lent has been celebrated in Rome since at least the year 385, because during the late 4th century its duration was set at forty days beginning six Sundays prior to Easter.

During Lent, most of the churches in and around La Antigua celebrate the season with many activities.

Each alfombra is a symbol of faith. These so-called carpets are made from colored sawdust or flowers and are created as an offering, as a request, or as a sign of gratitude for favors received. Each day that a procesión is held, starting early in the morning these carpets are made by hundreds of people along the route. You can see them being made – as well as the final results – if you take a walk along the procession’s route before it passes.

Los cortejos procesionales cuentan con una banda que les acompaña durante todo su recorrido. A un ritmo de entre seis y ocho marchas por hora, la banda puede llegar a tocar más de 100 marchas fúnebres durante el recorrido.

Se dice que el origen de la vestimenta se remonta a la Inquisición, cuando lo que hoy conocemos como capirotes (un tipo de gorro puntiagudo con forma cónica) era un símbolo de penitencia y una forma de acercamiento entre los que cumplen dicha penitencia y el cielo.

Velaciones Una velación es un presentación simbólica dentro de una iglesia de un pasaje o parábola bíblica – utilizando la imagen del Nazareno como parte de la escena – que usualmente se lleva a cabo los días viernes. Las velaciones en las que se utilizan las imágenes de la Virgen como personaje principal se llevan a cabo usualmente los días sábados. De las iglesias en que se llevan a cabo velaciones los días viernes durante la Cuaresma, los días domingos saldrá una procesión. En una velación podrás observar – además del montaje representando la historia – una alfombra hecho de aserrín o de flores además de un llamado huerto, un diseño artístico que utiliza frutas y vegetales como símbolos de abundancia y redención.

También es común que se muestren ofrendas que los fieles han traído a la iglesia, incluyendo arreglos de flores o pan en forma de animales.

Velaciones

A velación (holy vigil) – usually held on Fridays – is a symbolic representation of a biblical passage or parable, illustrated using the church’s imagen (religious statue) of Jesus as part of the scene. Velaciones that incorporate the imágenes of the Virgin Mary as the main character are usually held on Saturdays. Those churches that hold velaciones on Fridays during Lent celebrate the following Sunday with a procession of the same imagen. At a velación

– besides the scene depicting the story – you can see an intricate and highly artistic alfombra (carpet) made from colored sawdust and flowers, as well as what’s called a huerto (garden), a design that uses fruits and vegetables as symbols of abundance and redemption. It’s also common for offerings that the faithful have brought to the church to be displayed, such as flower arrangements or loaves of bread in the shape of animals..

Procesiones Las procesiones son andarías de madera que se utilizan para transportar una imagen determinada.

La decoración de las procesiones está inspirada, al igual que las velaciones, en pasajes de la Biblia o en mensajes derivados de los Salmos o Proverbios.

La historia de las procesiones en Guatemala se remonta a la época después de la Conquista, cuando se establecieron las primeras cofradías y estas presentaban imágenes, usualmente hechas por artistas guatemaltecos, cargadas en pequeñas andas de madera. La primera procesión que se llevó a cabo en la Ciudad de Santiago (hoy La Antigua) salió a recorrer las calles el 10 de marzo de 1543.

Hoy en día, hay cinco procesiones principales en La Antigua durante la Cuaresma – una cada domingo – aunque también hay varias otras que solo recorren las calles de sus aldeas o en otros municipios. Durante estas cinco semanas, las procesiones que recorren las calles de la ciudad salen de las iglesias de la aldea Santa Catarina Bobadilla, la aldea Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano, el municipio de Jocotenango, la aldea Santa Ana y la aldea San Bartolomé Becerra.

Processions

A procesión is a religious procession whose centerpiece is a ceremonial wooden platform, or anda, which is topped by a church’s religious statue, or imagen. The anda’s decoration is inspired (like those of the velaciones) by Bible passages or messages from the Psalms or Proverbs.

The history of processions in Guatemala dates back to the period just after the Spanish Conquest, when the first cofradías were established. These religious brotherhoods would display imágenes (life-sized religious statues) – usually made by Guatemalan artists – on small wooden ceremonial platforms called andas. The first procession that was held in the City of Santiago (now La Antigua) went through the town’s streets on March 10th, 1543.

Nowadays there are five main processions in La Antigua during Lent – one each Sunday – but there are others which only go through the streets of their own particular village or through other municipios, as well. During these five weeks, the Sunday processions through La Antigua are from the churches of these villages and towns: the aldea of Santa Catarina Bobadilla, the aldea of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano, the municipio of Jocotenango, the aldea of Santa Ana, and the aldea of San Bartolomé Becerra.

PRIMERA SEMANA DE LA CUARESMA FIRST WEEK OF LENT Viernes 12 de febrero: Velación La primera velación de la Cuaresma se lleva a cabo en la aldea de Santa Catarina Bobadilla. En esta aldea, que se ubica a aproximadamente 4 kilómetros del centro de La Antigua, se venera la consagrada imagen de Jesús Nazareno de la Salvación, nombrada Patrono Jurado de La Antigua en el año 2009.

Esta imagen fue tallada – especialmente para estar en este templo – en el año de 1817 por el escultor Pedro Mendoza.

La Marcha Fúnebre dedicada a Jesús Nazareno de la Salvación tiene por título “Tú eres mi Salvación” y fue escrita por José Antonio Padilla.

Domingo 14 de febrero: Procesión La procesión de Santa Catarina Bobadilla es la primera procesión de la Cuaresma, e inicialmente recorría las calles de la aldea – y posteriormente las de La Antigua – el tercer domingo de la Cuaresma.

Friday, February 12th: Velación/Holy Vigil

The first holy vigil, or velación, of Lent takes place in the aldea of Santa Catarina Bobadilla. In this village, located about 4 kilometers (2½ miles) from the center of La Antigua, the consecrated image of Jesus the Nazarene of Salvation – named as the Patron Saint of La Antigua in 2009 – is venerated. This religious statue, or imagen, was carved especially for this church by the sculptor Pedro Mendoza in 1817.

The funeral march for Jesus the Nazarene of Salvation is entitled “Tú eres mi Salvación” (“You Are My Salvation”) and was composed by José Antonio Padilla.

The Santa Catarina Bobadilla procession is the first procession of Lent, but it originally passed through the streets of the village – and then later through those of La Antigua – on the third Sunday of Lent. By order of the Board of the church’s religious brotherhood (and with the agreement of the hermandades from the other churches in La Antigua), in 1948 it was decided that the procession would be celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent.

La calle que sirve de entrada a/salida de La Antigua desde/hacia la capital se cierra el segundo domingo de la Cuaresma debido a la ubicación de la iglesia de Santa Inés, de donde sale y entra la procesión. La imagen de Jesús Nazareno de Santa Inés recorrerá las calles de La Antigua.

The velación for the second Friday of Lent takes place in the village of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano, which, for reference, is located at the entrance to La Antigua (if you’re coming from the capital). The church’s venerated sculpture, or imagen – Jesus the Nazarene of Santa Inés – was created by an unknown artist.

The funeral march for Jesus the Nazarene of Santa Inés is entitled “Jesús de Santa Inés” (“Jesus of Santa Inés”) and was composed by Vicente Salazar.

Sunday, February 21st: Procession

The street that serves as an entrance to/exit from La Antigua if you’re traveling to/from the capital is closed on the second Sunday of Lent because of the location of the Santa Inés church, where the procession originates and ends. The imagen of Jesus the Nazarene of Santa Inés will process through the streets of La Antigua.

TERCERA SEMANA DE LA CUARESMA THIRD WEEK OF LENT Viernes 26 de febrero: Velación La velación del tercer viernes de la Cuaresma se lleva a cabo justo al norte de La Antigua en el municipio de Jocotenango (que significa “el lugar donde abundan los jocotes”). En la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, se veneran la consagrada imagen de Jesús Nazareno “El Dulce

Rabí” y la Virgen de Dolores “Dulce Madre de Jocotenango”.

La marcha fúnebre dedicada a la imagen de Jesús Nazareno de Jocotenango tiene por título “Divino Nazareno de Jocotenango” y fue escrita por Carlos Humberto Mendizábal Gallardo.

Domingo 28 de febrero: Procesión La hermandad de esta parroquia tiene casi 120 años de existir, y estaba a cargo de que la imagen de Jesús Nazareno de Jocotenango “El Dulce Rabí” saliera en procesión el Lunes Santo. Pero en las décadas después del establecimiento de la procesión, el día en que sale fue cambiado para el tercer domingo de la Cuaresma.

Friday, February 26th: Velación/Holy Vigil

The velación for the third Friday of Lent takes place just north of La Antigua in the municipio of Jocotenango, whose name means “the place where jocotes abound.” (The jocote is a member of the cashew family. The fruit is small – the size of a walnut – and has a large pit in the center surrounded by juicy flesh.) The consecrated statues, or imágenes, of Jesus the Nazarene “The Sweet Rabbi” and the Virgin of Sorrows “Sweet Mother of Jocotenango” are venerated here in the parish of Our Lady of the Assumption.

The funeral march for Jesus the Nazarene of Jocotenango is entitled “Divino Nazareno de Jocotenango” (“Divine Nazarene of Jocotenango”) and was composed by Carlos Humberto Mendizábal Gallardo.

The religious brotherhood, or hermandad, of this parish has been in existence for nearly 120 years and coordinated the procession for the statue of Jesus the Nazarene of Jocotenango “The Sweet Rabbi” every year on the Monday of Holy Week. But in the decades after the procession was established, the day of the procession was changed and is now the third Sunday of Lent.

CUARTA SEMANA DE LA CUARESMA FOURTH WEEK OF LENT Viernes 4 de marzo: Velación La velación del cuarto viernes de la Cuaresma se lleva a cabo en la aldea de Santa Ana – al sureste de La Antigua – que fue fundada a principios del año 1540 en un asentamiento otorgado al sacerdote Juan Godínez. Esta aldea y la capilla que se construyó en ella (y que luego se convirtió en ermita) fueron las primeras en establecerse en el Valle de Panchoy. En la parroquia de Santa Ana, se venera la imagen de Jesús Nazareno de la Dulce Mirada y la Virgen de Dolores.

La marcha fúnebre dedicada a la imagen de Jesús Nazareno de la Dulce Mirada tiene por título “Jesús de Santa Ana” y fue escrita por Alfredo Dávila Rendón.

Domingo 6 de marzo: Procesión Se dice que la escultura que procesiona el cuarto domingo de la Cuaresma fue obra de un indígena de apellido Balam. Una de las características más inusuales de la imagen de Jesús de Santa Ana es que el pelo de la estatua no está hecho con cabello natural sino que está tallado de la misma madera y forma parte de la estatua en sí.

Friday, March 4th: Velación/Holy Vigil

The holy vigil, or velación, for the fourth Friday of Lent takes place in the aldea of Santa Ana – to the southeast of La Antigua – which was founded in early 1540 on a parcel of land that had been awarded to Juan Godínez, a priest. This village and the chapel that was built here (which later became a hermitage) were the first to be established in the Panchoy Valley. In the parish of Santa Ana, the imágenes of Jesus the Nazarene of the Tender Gaze and the Virgin of Sorrows are venerated.

The funeral march for Jesus the Nazarene of the Tender Gaze is entitled “Jesús de Santa Ana” (“Jesus of Santa Ana”) and was composed by Alfredo Dávila Rendón.

Sunday, March 6th: Procession

It’s said that the religious sculpture which is at the heart of the procession on the fourth Sunday of Lent is the work of an Indigenous man with the surname of Balam. One of the more unusual features of the Jesus imagen in Santa Ana is that the statue’s hair is not made with natural hair but is instead carved from the same wood and is part of the statue itself.

QUINTA SEMANA DE LA CUARESMA FIFTH WEEK OF LENT Viernes 11 de marzo: Velación La velación del quinto viernes de Cuaresma se lleva a cabo en la aldea de San Bartolomé Becerra, – frecuentemente llamada solo “San Bartolo”. En la iglesia de San Bartolomé Becerra se resguarda la consagrada imagen de Jesús Nazareno de la Caída, que reputa ser la única imagen de la época colonial que aún permanece en el municipio de Antigua

Guatemala después de que la capital se trasladó en 1776 a su nueva ubicación, la Ciudad de Guatemala.

La marcha fúnebre dedicada a la imagen de Jesús Nazareno de la Caída tiene por título “Jesús de San Bartolo” y fue escrita por Manuel Antonio Ramírez Crocker.

Domingo 14 de marzo: Procesión No se conoce del autor ni el año de creación de la imagen, pero muchos se la atribuyen al escultor Pedro de Mendoza. La primera procesión que llevó la imagen fue la del quinto domingo de la Cuaresma de 1902.

The velación for the fifth Friday of Lent takes place in the aldea of San Bartolomé Becerra, often called just “San Bartolo”. The church of San Bartolomé Becerra houses the consecrated image of Jesus the Nazarene of the Fall. It’s said that this is the only imagen from the Spanish Colonial era that still remains in the municipio of Antigua Guatemala after the capital was moved in 1776 to its new location, Guatemala City.

The funeral march for Jesus the Nazarene of the Fall is entitled “Jesús de San Bartolo” (“Jesus of San Bartolo”) and was composed by Manuel Antonio Ramírez Crocker.
