Editora Diciembre – con ponche, tamales y hasta rompope – está aquí y en esta edición de Qué Pasa puedes conocer más de cómo los guatemaltecos celebramos esta época – incluyendo un concierto navideño y un DJ chapín que vuelve a nuestras tierras a armar parranda.

Este mes tenemos en la revista varios ejemplos de grandes emprendedores que están logrando un cambio positivo a través de sus productos, es con su esfuerzo que construyen una mejor Guatemala para los guatemaltecos.

El último mes del año está aquí y con él las expectativas para el nuevo año. El 2016 ha dejado muchas cosas buenas para Qué Pasa, incluyendo nuevos proyectos y la consolidación de un equipo increíble. the editor December is here, bringing with it some favourites like the ‘ponche’, the tamales and maybe even some rompope; in this edition of Qué Pasa you’ll find a lot of information on how Guatemalans celebrate this time of the year – including a special Christmas concert and a Guatemalan DJ returning to his home country to get the party going.

This month’s edition also features several examples of brilliant entrepreneurs who are generating positive changes through their products and who – through their efforts – are helping to build a better Guatemala for Guatemalans.

The last month of this year has arrived and – with it – we are thinking of our expectations for the New Year. 2016 has brought all sorts of positive things to Qué Pasa – including several new projects and the consolidation of our excellent team. On behalf of all us at Qué Pasa, we hope that this last year has brought you peace and happiness…and that this coming year will be even better!

¡Bah! ¡Pamplinas! ¡Hola otra vez, Fiel Lector!

Preparate, porque este mes – en mi propia manera de gruñir como el Grinch – voy a ponerme un poco serio (como un intento cascarrabiesco de proporcionar un antídoto a la muy cursi y demasiado dulce palabrería de las festividades del fin de año).

Durante la Guerra Fría, Guatemala fue uno de los muchos campos de batalla del mundo en la lucha del capitalismo contra el comunismo.

Siempre me ha parecido chistoso que alguien pudiera pensar que la mayoría de los chapines se sentirían atraídos por el comunismo. Quiero decir, ¿has conocido a algún guatemalteco?

Los chapines son algunas de las personas más emprendedoras del planeta. Muchas personas en este país – especialmente los desfavorecidos económicamente – siempre están buscando la oportunidad de ganar unos quetzalitos; una visita este mes al mercado de La Antigua durante el frenesí de las compras para las fiestas te dará una pequeña revelación.

Otro ejemplo es lo que sucede aquí en La Antigua cada primavera durante la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa: los antigüeños que son casi invisibles durante el resto del año de repente se convierten en magnates de la acera – vendiendo comida, bebidas y una cantidad innumerable de chunches... e incluso alquilan sus baños a aquellos cuyas vejigas están sobreestresadas por consumir demasiado chinchivir.

Los vendedores guatemaltecos pueden encontrarse incluso en medio de atascos de tráfico.

Si alguna vez has estado atrapado en el tráfico en este país sabrás que uno de los signos de que el embotellamiento es horrible 22

y que no vas pronto a ningún lado es que hay vendedores – de boquitas, de ambientadores, de banderas y de todo tipo de aparatitos y artilugios – caminando serenamente entre los carros parados, tratando de aprovechar el hecho de que tienen una audiencia cautiva.

El mes pasado, la Ciudad de Guatemala vio una batalla entre ese espíritu emprendedor y las fuerzas de la regulación gubernamental. Hace varios años cuando La Muni de la capital decidió restaurar y embellecer la Sexta Avenida de la Zona 1, la primera orden del día fue retirar a todos los vendedores informales y a sus puestos que se habían acumulado durante décadas en las banquetas (haciendo casi imposible para los peatones navegar fácilmente).

La Muni construyó una nueva plaza comercial en la Calle 18 – El Amate – para que los vendedores desplazados pudieran vender sus mercancías. Pero en los últimos dos o tres años, La Sexta ha visto el regreso de vendedores ambulantes, aparentemente más cada mes, a pesar de su prohibición por las regulaciones municipales.

A principios de noviembre, La Muni decidió retirar a los vendedores, y las fuerzas de seguridad fueron enviadas a hacerlo. La policía se encontró con una feroz resistencia: vendedores enfurecidos, frente a la eliminación de su oportunidad de ganarse la vida, tiraron piedras y atacaron a la policía con palos y cualquier cosa a mano. Todo fue capturado en video, y el disturbio estuvo en la primera plana durante varios días en los medios de comunicación nacionales, provocando debates intensos, no solo entre los intelectuales públicos de la nación, sino también en las redes sociales.

Hello again, Faithful Reader!

Brace yourself, because this month – in my own grumbling and Grinch-like way – I'm going to get a bit serious (as a curmudgeonly attempt to provide an antidote to the annual touchy-feely, syrupy-sweet, end-of-the-year holiday blather).

During the Cold War, Guatemala was one of the world's many battlegrounds in the fight of capitalism vs. communism.

I have always found it amusing that anyone could think that most Guatemalans would be attracted by communism.

I mean, have you met any Guatemalans? Chapines are some of the most entrepreneurial people on the planet. Many people in this country – especially the economically disadvantaged – are always looking for the opportunity to make a buck; a quick trip to La Antigua's market this month during the frenzy of pre-holiday shopping will give you a little insight.

Another example is what happens here in La Antigua every spring during Lent and Holy Week: Antigüeños who are all but invisible during the rest of the year suddenly become sidewalk tycoons – selling food, drink, and an innumerable number of trinkets... and even renting out their bathrooms to those whose bladders are stressed from consuming too much chinchivir.

Guatemalan vendors can even be found in the midst of traffic jams. If you've ever been stuck in traffic in this country you'll know that one of the signs that the slowdown is bad and that you're not going anywhere anytime soon is that there are vendors – of snacks, of air fresheners, of flags, and of all sorts of gizmos and doodads – walking serenely among the bumper-to-bumper cars, attempting to take advantage of the fact that they have a captive audience.

Last month, Guatemala City saw a battle between that entrepreneurial spirit and the forces of government regulation. When the capital's City Hall decided several years ago to overhaul, restore, and beautify Zone 1's Sexta Avenida, the first order of business was to remove all the informal vendors and their stalls which had accumulated over the decades on the sidewalks (making it all but impossible for pedestrians to navigate easily). The Muni built a new shopping plaza on 18 Calle – El Amate – for those displaced vendors to sell their wares. But over the past two or three years, La Sexta has seen the return of wandering vendors, seemingly more each month, despite their prohibition by municipal regulations.

In early November, the Muni decided to remove the vendors, and security forces were sent in to do so. The police were met by fierce resistance: enraged vendors, faced with the removal of their opportunity to earn a living, rioted – throwing stones and attacking the police with sticks and whatever else was handy. All of this was captured on video, and the riot was the lead story for several days in the national media, sparking fierce debates, not only among the nation's pundits, but also on social media.

El debate se reduce a dos ideas opuestas. Una es que para tener una sociedad ordenada, el comercio debería limitarse a áreas específicas; que los espacios públicos pertenecen al público y que los peatones deben ser libres para navegar por la ciudad sin ser molestados por los vendedores; y que los trabajadores del sector informal merecen, en esencia, poca consideración porque sus negocios están en gran parte sin regulación y no están sujetos a impuestos. La segunda opinión es que los trabajadores del sector informal de la economía son gente común y trabajadora que está en desventaja pero quienes, de todos modos, están tratando de sobrevivir y tener éxito en un ambiente económicamente hostil, un ambiente en donde la pobreza es desenfrenada y el gobierno y las élites empresariales proporcionan poca ayuda en la creación de empleos bien remunerados.

Un grupo que ha sido uno de los críticos más vocales de los disturbios (y, podría decirse, uno de los más indiferentes de facto a la difícil situación de los pobres) es el CACIF, el Comité Coordinador de Asociaciones Agrícolas, Comerciales, Industriales y Financieras – básicamente una asociación de los grandes intereses empresariales de Guatemala. Me parece bastante irónico que este grupo, que es gran aficionado al libre comercio y que se oponga firmemente a cualquier regulación gubernamental que intente controlar o restringir los negocios y las ganancias, está – en este caso – del lado del gobierno, apoyando la prohibición de los vendedores ambulantes e inhibiendo “la mano invisible del mercado”. Esta animosidad aparentemente basada en clasismo destaca la grave y creciente brecha de desigualdad económica que afecta no solo a Guatemala sino también, cada vez más, a muchos otros países.

Entonces, ¿cuál es mi solución? Como de costumbre, no tengo una buena. (Ya, por favor, sé realista... soy un columnista mensual de verbosidad grandilocuente, no un experto en la política pública.)

A menos que todos estuvieran de acuerdo en cambiar radicalmente la sociedad hasta el punto en que la vida sea de arco iris y unicornios, no tengo ni idea. (Otra razón por la que es bueno que no esté a cargo de la política pública.) Pero sé que tarde o temprano – y como lo demuestran los recientes acontecimientos en todo el mundo, probablemente será más temprano que tarde – algo debe hacerse para aliviar la inseguridad económica y disminuir la desigualdad de la riqueza.

Por último – y tangencialmente relacionado con lo de que he estado hablando – siento que debo mencionar las recientes elecciones en los EE.UU. A pesar de los posibles efectos sobre Guatemala de la política exterior potencial de la nueva administración estadounidense (resultados que, por cierto, podrían ser severos), solo quiero señalar que, por una vez, Guatemala parece haber estado a la vanguardia.

Nuestra última elección enfrentó a una celebridad de la televisión sin experiencia gubernamental contra una ex Primera Dama – una competencia (y su consecuencia) extrañamente repetidas por nuestro vecino, a veces regañón, al norte. A los gringos quienes se divirtieron con la elección del actual Presidente de Guatemala, les digo: ten cuidado con quien te burlas, porque el karma puede volver a morderte en las nalgas.

The debate boils down to two opposing ideas. One is that in order to have an orderly society, commerce should be restricted to specific areas; that public spaces belong to the public and pedestrians should be free to navigate the city without being inconvenienced by salespeople; and that workers in the informal sector deserve, in essence, little consideration because their businesses are largely unregulated and untaxed.

The second camp believes that workers in the informal sector of the economy are hard-working, salt-of-theearth common people who are disadvantaged but who are nonetheless trying to survive and succeed in an economically hostile environment – an environment where poverty is rampant and the government and business elites provide little help in creating wellpaying jobs.

A group that has been one of the most vocal critics of the riots (and, arguably, one of the de facto most indifferent to the plight of the struggling poor) is CACIF, the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial and Financial Associations – basically a trade association of Guatemala's big-business interests. I find it quite ironic that this group, which is a big fan of free trade and is staunchly opposed to any government regulations that attempt to control or constrain business and profitmaking, is – in this instance – on the government's side, supporting the prohibition of wandering vendors and

inhibiting “the invisible hand of the market.” This seemingly class-based animus highlights the severe and growing economic inequality gap which affects not only Guatemala but also, increasingly, many other countries.

So, what's my solution?

As usual, I don't have a good one. (Gimme a break... I'm a bloviating monthly columnist, not a public policy expert.)

Unless everyone were to agree to fundamentally change society to the point where life is all rainbows and unicorns, I'm fresh out of ideas. (Another reason it's a good thing that I'm not in charge of public policy.) But I do know that sooner or later – and as shown by recent events around the world, it'll probably be sooner – something must be done to alleviate economic insecurity and decrease wealth inequality.

Finally – and tangentially related to what I've been talking about – I feel I must mention the recent elections in the US. Despite the possible effects on Guatemala of the new US administration's potential foreign policies (results which, by the way, could be severe), I just want to point out that, for once, Guatemala seems to have been in the vanguard. Our last election pitted a televisioncelebrity “outsider” against a former First Lady – a contest (and result) oddly echoed by our sometimes-nagging neighbor to the north. To the gringos who were amused by the election of Guatemala's current President, I say: be careful who you mock, ’cause karma may just come back to bite you on the nalgas.

Concierto Navideño: Bajo la Estrella de Belén

L

as celebraciones propias de la época navideña están ya casi listas y el Patronato Pro Conservación, Restauración y Rehabilitación del Conjunto Monumental de San José Catedral de La Antigua Guatemala ha trabajado arduamente para poder brindar a La Antigua un concierto único.

El patronato presenta un espectáculo de música antigua guatemalteca y universal de la época navideña, a cargo del Coro y Orquesta de Cámara Millenium, con la participación de la mezzosoprano Cristina Altamira, dirigidos todos por el maestro Dieter Lehnhoff.

Para quienes no lo saben, el Patronato es una organización sin fines de lucro, cuya misión es trabajar por la recuperación de uno de las edificaciones más importantes de la ciudad, la Iglesia de San José Catedral, con el propósito de poner en marcha acciones de conservación y restauración de este patrimonio, de la mano

de una adecuada gestión y uso sostenible que asegure la preservación de sus valores y su incorporación plena a la comunidad.

Idealmente, tienen como propósito dar al monumento un uso digno y congruente en el que converjan cultura y espiritualidad.

Los espacios rehabilitados del inmueble, constituirán un lugar de encuentro para nacionales y extranjeros y luego de la maravillosa intervención que el edificio ha tenido y aprovechando la imponencia del resultado, se propone que el recinto albergue eventos pastorales y culturales, siendo el concierto uno de ellos.

Este concierto se llevará a cabo gracias al apoyo del Banco G&T Continental el sábado 17 de diciembre a las 7:30 PM en las Ruinas de San José Catedral. La entrada a este evento es gratuita aunque el cupo es limitado.

Christmas Concert: Bajo la Estrella de Belén

his year’s Christmas celebrations are almost upon us, and the Trust for the Conservation, Restauration and Rehabilitation of the Monumental Site of San José Catedral of La Antigua Guatemala have been working hard to put together a unique concert in La Antigua.

The Trust proudly presents a show comprised of Christmas music from Antigua, Guatemala and the world – performed by the Millenium Choir and Chamber Orchestra with a special performance by the mezzosoprano Cristina Altamira and directed by Dieter Lehnhoff.

For those who aren’t in the know, this Patronato is a non profit organization whose mission is to work to recover and restore one of the most important buildings of the town – La church of San José Catedral. Their aim is to conserve its heritage whilst making sure that it is managed appropriately and in a sustainable manner

that will ensure the protection of its value and its full incorporation into the community.

Ideally, they would like to make sure the monument is used appropriately and consistently in a way that combines culture and spirituality.

The rehabilitated parts of the building will provide a wonderful space that can be appreciated by locals and tourists alike, and – once the spectacular restorations have been finished and considering the grandness of the final result – it has been proposed that the premises play host to pastoral and cultural events such as concerts.

This concert will be carried out thanks to the sponsorship of Banco G&T Continental, on Saturday 17th of December at 7:30 PM in the ruins of San José Cathedral. Entrance to the event is free of charge but there is limited seating.

Los Ritmos de DJ Masaya

H

ace algunos años, el DJ guatemalteco Esteban Masaya, conocido como DJ Masaya, emprendió un viaje a Suecia para abrirse camino en el mundo de la música electrónica, su pasión.

La música de DJ Masaya es reconocida por integrar sonidos del instrumento nacional de Guatemala – la marimba – a ritmos electrónicos, tropicales y world music.

De esta forma crea música original, con matices interesantes, que además promueve ante el mundo las melodías de un instrumento que es parte importante de la cultura guatemalteca, algo que a él le llena de orgullo.

Aunque el DJ radica en Estocolmo, hace unos meses estuvo de regreso en el país para celebrar el aniversario de Fridas en donde brindó un espectáculo de primer nivel en el que todos los que atendieron se vieron sorprendidos por su estilo musical, convirtiendo el evento en un éxito.

few years back, the Guatemalan DJ Esteban Masaya – known as ‘DJ Masaya’ – set off on a trip to Sweden to make his name known in the world of electronic music: his great passion.

DJ Masaya’s music is renowned for integrating the sound of the national instrument of Guatemala – la marimba – with electronic, tropical and world music rhythms.

He creates original music with a fascinating tone that promotes the sound of an instrument that represents an important part of Guatemalan culture on the world stage – something that makes him very proud.

Although he lives and works for most of the time in Stockholm, a few months ago he returned to Guatemala to help celebrate the anniversary of Fridas with a fantastic and incredibly successful show that surprised everyone present with his unique musical style.

This 31st of December DJ Masaya is in charge of getting the New Year’s party going in Fridas’ El Atico Bar (MAP C5).

Sigue la Celebración en La Antigua galería

L

a Antigua Galería de Arte en La Antigua sigue celebrando su 20 aniversario durante el mes de diciembre con una exhibición llena de talento. Desde 1996, La Antigua Galería ha estado descubriendo y promoviendo artistas únicos de Guatemala y las Américas y esta vez no es la excepción.

En esta celebración, la mayoría de los artistas que la galería representa estarán presentes con nuevas obras que incluyen pinturas, esculturas, impresiones y muchas otras formas de expresión artística.

Guatemala es un país que ha sido marcado por su historia reciente, los acontecimientos del pasado y sus actuales retos y contradicciones. Dada la naturaleza propia del arte como representativa de la cultura y de la experiencia, estos artistas regionales e internacionales han capturado – y siguen capturando – la peculiaridad de la condición humana y plasmándola de forma excepcional.

a Antigua Galería de Arte in La Antigua continues to celebrate its 20-year anniversary during the month of December with an exhibition bursting with artistic talent.

Since 1996, La Antigua Galería has been discovering and promoting unique artists from Guatemala and Central America; and this month is no exception.

As part of this celebration, the majority of the artists represented by the Gallery will be showing their work – including new pieces – comprised of paintings, sculptures, prints and many other forms of artistic expression.

Guatemala is a country that has been marked by its recent history, the events of the past and its current challenges and contradictions. Given the nature of art as a medium for representing culture and human experience, these national and international artists have captured – and continue to capture – the peculiarity of the human condition and have depicted it in the most extraordinary manner.

El Arte Prehispánico del Tejido Guatemalteco

L

a Antigua Guatemala guarda infinidad de tesoros y, entre ellos, podemos apreciar los elaborados tejidos que se encuentran en tiendas o que muestran vendedores ambulantes que además ofrecen una infinidad de artículos impresionantes.

Las tejedoras indígenas todavía utilizan el telar de cintura, el cual requiere una posición especial en la que quien lo elabora debe hincarse para trabajarlo mejor.

Con este sistema solamente se pueden elaborar piezas angostas y largas. La fibra que se utiliza es el algodón – por ser nativo de Guatemala – y para terminar una pieza un tamaño de metro y medio, pueden necesitarse de dos a tres semanas.

Uno de los instrumentos que utilizan para tejer tiene por nombre “el desatador” y éste les ayuda a

las artesanas a devanar el hilo para hacer una bola.

Otro de los instrumentos que utilizan es “el urdidor”, con el que agarran el hilo y lo colocan en cada extremo en preparación de la base del telar.

En la cosmovisión maya, la diosa Ixchel (la diosa del amor, la gestación, la medicina, la luna y del telar o trabajos textiles) lleva en la cabeza una serpiente, que simboliza entendimiento y sabiduría, incluyendo en las formas en que se manifiesta la cosmovisión.

Debido a que los tejidos presentan esta cosmovisión, la sabiduría de Ixchel está presente al trabajar el telar de cintura y, por eso, en varios pueblos indígenas la mujer usa el tocoyal (una cinta larga, llena de color, que se envuelve alrededor de la cabeza) simbolizando la serpiente de Ixchel.

The Pre-Hispanic Art of Guatemalan Textiles

a Antigua Guatemala is home to a trove of treasures; amongst which the elaborate weavings found in stores or sold by street vendors (along with an infinity of other interesting knickknacks) stand out.

Indigenous women weavers still use the traditional backstrap loom that requires the weaver to sit or kneel down in a particular position to be able to use it. This type of system is employed to weave long, wide pieces of cloth. The yarn that is used is made from cotton – due to it being a native plant of Guatemala – and it can take around 2 to 3 weeks to finish a piece around a meter and a half in length.

One of the tools that is essential to weaving is known as the ‘un-knotter’, and this allows the artisans to wind the yarn around a spool to make a ball. Other important tools include the ‘warping frame’ (or ‘urdidor’) with which they affix the yarn to each corner of the loom to prepare the base for weaving.

In the Mayan cosmovision (or ‘world view’) the Goddess Ixchel (the goddess of love, gestation, natural medicine, the moon and the loom or weaving) is depicted with a serpent on her head symbolizing understanding, wisdom and the manifestation of the cosmovision. The wisdom of Ixchel is seen to permeate this process of backstrap weaving that represents the Mayan cosmovision, and in many indigenous villages the women will use the tocoyal (a long, colourful band that is wrapped around the head) to symbolise Ixchel’s serpent. + en/on Pg 34

En el diario vivir, los trajes ceremoniales y de uso diario de varios departamentos del país, permiten que sea posible distinguir el estado civil del hombre y la mujer dependiendo del traje que porten. Si el hombre lleva en su camisa el mismo color y diseño que el huipil de la mujer, significa que está casado o comprometido con esa mujer. En Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, en Quiché, si el joven varón lleva dos soles en el pecho de la camisa significa que está bajo la protección de sus padres, si los lleva en las mangas significa que es mayor de edad, independiente de ellos.

Este arte del tejido guatemalteco ha ido evolucionando, tanto así que los tejidos han sido incorporados a su s diseños por los fabricantes de zapatos, cinchos, bolsas y una gran variedad de elementos de uso diario. En la actualidad se pueden encontrar diseñadores guatemaltecos que su fuente de inspiración es la cultura ancestral maya, promoviendo y exponiendo lo que se considera una nueva moda a nivel internacional.

La cosmovisión maya proyecta color, imágenes eclécticas, historia, diseños ancestrales, cultura, idiomas mayas y una especial visión del mundo, y hoy en día todo ello es motivo de inspiración para que los diseñadores guatemaltecos tengan un estilo propio que dan a conocer exitosamente con sus maravillosas creaciones.

La cosmovisión maya está en todo el mundo gracias a la moda. Los museos de las ciudades más famosas del mundo como Alemania, Paris, Madrid y Nueva York exhiben los invaluables Códices Mayas con admiración – favoreciendo los tejidos guatemaltecos. El mundo de la moda se envuelve ahora en diseños geométricos que expresan el misterio de las huellas prehispánicas como un medio de comunicación cultural, que lleva una amplia combinación de mensajes con distinta interpretación.

Es impresionante e inolvidable que un hermoso huipil, a través de sus bordados, represente, la selva maya, los animales salvajes, las flores exóticas y el universo según la magia misteriosa del mundo maya, no solamente en Guatemala, sino ahora en el mundo entero.

In many regions of the country, both ceremonial clothes and items used in daily life can be used to distinguish the marital status of men and women according to the garments that they are wearing. If a man wears a shirt of the same color and design as a woman’s huipil (embroidered tunic or blouse), it means that he is married or engaged to the woman. In Santo Tomás Chichicastenango in Quiché, if a young man wears a shirt with two suns embroidered on the chest it means he is still under the tutelage of his parents, whereas if the suns are embroidered on the sleeve of his shirt it means that he is of legal age and independent from them.

The art form of Guatemalan weaving has evolved over time – so much that traditional textiles have now been incorporated into designs made by makers of shoes, belts, bags and a wide range of everyday items. Nowadays you can find a number of Guatemalan designers who take their inspiration from ancient Mayan culture – promoting and exhibiting what is now considered a new fashion trend on an international level.

designers to develop their own style and to make their beautiful creations known.

The Mayan cosmovision is recognized across the world thanks to fashion. Museums in the most famous cities of the world proudly exhibit Mayan codices that bring to mind Guatemalan textiles – in Germany, Paris, Madrid, New York and more. The fashion world has been taken over by geometric designs that express the mystery of those pre-Hispanic footprints and represent a means of cultural communication, as well as providing a plethora of messages to be interpreted.

It is both incredible and unforgettable that one beautiful huipil can – though the patterns woven into it – represent the Mayan rainforest, wild animals, exotic flowers and the universe according to the mysterious magic of the Mayan world…. now, not just in Guatemala but all over the world.

124 Años del Convite de Chichicastenango

hichicastenango – una ciudad rica en cultura, creencias y tradiciones ancestrales – celebra este 8 de diciembre el 124º aniversario de su convite.

Un convite es un característico baile de disfraces, y el de Chichicastenango le ha valido al lugar condecoraciones importantes en reconocimiento a su trayectoria, como la Orden del Soberano Congreso en el año 2007 y luego, en el año 2010, la declaración reconociéndolo como Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación.

La celebración cuenta con un preámbulo el día 7 de diciembre cuando la imagen de la Inmaculada Virgen de Concepción es trasladada de la cofradía saliente, donde ha pasado un año completo, hacia la iglesia parroquial. En su trayecto, fieles a la imagen realizan fogatas y altares acompañados de la quema de ametralladoras y bombas anunciando su paso hacia el frontispicio de la iglesia, lugar donde es recibida al compás del son por la marimba orquesta u otros grupos que amenizan la celebración.

Con su arribo da inicio el concierto, y los integrantes de dicho convite bailan y queman vistosos toritos y otros juegos pirotécnicos. Luego de este baile, los conviteros (como se les conoce) se trasladan a llevar a cabo un ensayo final previo a su presentación el día siguiente.

La madrugada del 8 el párroco de la iglesia ofrece una misa de bendición a los conviteros y por la celebración del día de la Inmaculada Virgen de Concepción. Terminada la misa, las 25 parejas de conviteros se dirigen al salón municipal a cambiarse para

hichicastenango – a city rich in culture, beliefs, and traditions – celebrates the 124rd anniversary of its convite this December 8th.

A convite is a costumed dance and parade, and Chichicastenango's has earned the city several important recognitions including the Order of the Sovereign Congress in 2007, and a declaration recognizing it as part of the Nation's Cultural Heritage in 2010.

The celebration features a prologue on December 7th when the statue (imagen) of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is transferred from the outgoing religious brotherhood (cofradía), where it spent the entire year, to the parish church. Along the route, the faithful build bonfires and altars and set off firecrackers, mortars, and other

fireworks to herald their path to the church, where the parade is received to the rhythm of the son by a marimba band or other groups that enliven the celebration.

With the arrival, the concert begins, and the members of the convite dance and set off fireworks, including the always-breathtaking torito, where a dancer wears a costume covered with lit fireworks. After this, the conviteros (as they're known) leave and have a final rehearsal before the big presentation the following day.

In the very early morning of December 8th, the parish priest offers a Mass to bless the conviteros and to celebrate the day of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

En cada casa en la que se les brinda el refrigerio, después realizan dos presentaciones a varios ritmos como de vals, blues, paso doble, foxtrot, merengue u otros. Luego el convite pasa a la siguiente casa para más bocadillos y más presentaciones. Esto continúa hasta la presentación final a las 9 PM frente a la iglesia que culmina con el desenmascaramiento de los bailarines disfrazados.

Los conviteros usan disfraces elaborados por artesanos de la región que recrean personajes del medio artístico y de caricaturas, juegos y películas.

Donde pasa el convite, los conviteros llevan con ellos alegría a grandes y a chicos.

Más celebraciones en Chichicastenango El 21 de diciembre Chichicastenango celebra la fiesta dedicada a Santo Tomás Apóstol, el Patrón del lugar. Durante la madrugada, el baile del torito y el de la conquista recorren las calles aledañas a las cofradías e iglesia. Las cofradías – grupos o fraternidades religiosas – crean una pequeña procesión en la cual se puede observar la imagen de Santo Tomás sentada entre coloridas decoraciones junto a las imágenes de San José y la de San Sebastián, que le acompañarán durante las festividades. Estas imágenes son veneradas, en la iglesia al sonido del tun y la chirimía.

Por la tarde, a las 4 PM, caen del cielo pequeñas tiras de papel y se sueltan muchos globos al cielo en señal de fiesta. Más tarde, a las 6 PM, se inicia la quema de bombas, y después inicia el último recorrido hacia sus lugares en las cofradías.

During the journey through town, the convite will stop at 16 houses that open their doors and provide refreshments to the conviteros. At each house where refreshments are served, the conviteros afterwards perform two dances to various rhythms like waltz, blues, paso doble, foxtrot, merengue, or others. The convite then moves on to the next house for more refreshments and more presentations. This continues until the final presentation at 9 PM in front of the church, which culminates with the costumed dancers being unmasked.

The conviteros wear costumes made by local artisans which recreate characters from popular culture, like cartoons, games and movies. Wherever the convite goes, the conviteros bring with them fun and joy for both adults and children.

More celebrations in Chichicastenango On December 21st a celebration in honor of St. Thomas the Apostle, the town’s Patron Saint, takes place. In the early hours of the morning, el baile de la conquista and el baile del torito – traditional dances – begin and they go through the streets close to the cofradías and the church. The – cofradías— religious fraternities or groups – create a small procession in which you can observe a statue of St. Thomas seated among colorful decorations next to two other statues, the statues of St. Joseph and St. Sebastian, which will accompany St. Thomas during the celebrations. Together, these three images are revered at the front of the church to the sound of a drum called tun and native oboes or reed pipes called chirimías.

In the afternoon, at 4 PM, confetti falls and many balloons are released into the sky as a sign of celebration. Later, at 6 PM, the fireworks start, predominated by mortars. Finally, the images make their last round on the way to their places in the houses that host the cofradías.

omo mucha gente, cuando pienso en ‘reciclar’ y productos hechos de insumos reciclados – no me suelen venir a la mente cosas como zapatos, botas y carteras.

Encontrarme por casualidad con una pareja que fabrica bellos productos de antiguos desechos resultó ser una maravillosa experiencia.

La fundadora de Paganos Fashion – Johanna – es un ser humano realmente consciente del medio ambiente, quien ha creado una línea de productos de desechos reciclables, los cuales transforma en otras cosas. Junto con su esposo Andreas, ella ha comprobado que la moda puede ser a la vez amable con el medio ambiente, funcional y atractiva. ¿Qué quiere decir ‘transformar desechos’ (llamado ‘upcycling’ en inglés)? Es el proceso de re-utilizar objetos o materiales descartados de tal manera que los transforma en un producto de mayor calidad o valor que el original – en este caso, transformar los viejos tubos de las llantas en una línea de carteras, botas y mucho más.

ike a lot of people, when I think of ‘recycling’ and recycled wares, pretty shoes, boots and bags don’t normally come to mind. To stumble across an entrepreneurial couple that makes something beautiful out of old discarded goods was a wonderful experience.

Paganos Fashion founder Johanna is one earth conscious soul that has created a product line from recycled wares, upcycling them. Along with husband Andreas these two have proved fashion can be environmentally friendly, functional and beautiful at the same time.

What is Upcycling? It is the process of re-using discarded objects or materials in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original; in this case, re-using old tire inner tubes to make a fashion line of bags, boots, and much more.

l Barrio – un complejo de bares cerca del parque central de La Antigua – no es la típica discoteca, ni tampoco el típico restaurante o bar. Desde el momento en que entras por sus puertas, puedes elegir entre 5 diferentes bares, cada uno con su propio estilo, música y ofertas.

El primer bar con el que te toparás se llama The Ocelot – un lugar con una identidad orgullosamente de Gales. Ofrecen ricos y económicos cócteles, música en vivo cada jueves, un Pub Quiz muy alegre cada domingo y una enorme gama de licores. Si tienes suerte, podrás vivir una de esas noches legendarias cuando el dueño invite a todos los que estén en el bar a un shot de tequila y canta canciones clásicas con ellos a todo pulmón. El lugar está abierto de 6 PM-1 AM. l Barrio, a complex of bars close to the La Antigua’s central park is not a typical discotheque, nor typical restaurant or a bar. From the moment you enter you can choose between five different bars, each one with their own style, music and offers.

The first bar you bump into is The Ocelot bar, a place with a strong and proud Welsh identity. Smooth and cheap cocktails on offer every day, live music every Thursday, lively pub quiz on Sundays, and a huge selection of liqueurs.

If you’re lucky enough you might be part of legendary nights when the owner invites the entire bar to a tequila and then joins along in belting out cheesy classic anthems. Open 6 PM-1 AM. On the other side of the entrance is Bullseye, a sports bar where you can watch any kind of sports while trying out the big selection of craft or draft beer. El Día de La Guadalupana

E

l 12 de diciembre se celebra la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (conocida como la Virgen de Guadalupe). En ese día en La Antigua, los padres visten a sus niños pequeños en trajes típicos en honor al campesino Juan Diego quien, en 1531, tuvo una visión de una mujer joven – quien los católicos creen fue la Virgen María – rodeada de luz en la Colina del Tepeyac en México.

Si estás en La Antigua durante ese día, lo más probable es que verás muchos niños varones vestidos de rojo y blanco con pequeños sombreros de paja y bigotes pintados, y niñas con cintas en el pelo, coloridas faldas y muchos collares de cuentas. Después de visitar el altar de la Virgen de Guadalupe en la bella iglesia de La Merced y participar en la misa especial y la procesión que se lleva a cabo, las familias probablemente se reunirán fuera de la iglesia para disfrutar de algo delicioso en los puestos de comida (generalmente comida típica y dulces).

También podrás ver pequeñas escenas que han sido colocadas frente a la iglesia para ser utilizadas como sets de fotografía por algunos fotógrafos. Estos escenarios tienen imágenes pintadas de la Virgen María y accesorios como marimbas, animales de peluche y comales con tortillas para que los niños puedan posar en estos entornos tradicionales y los papás pueden conseguir una bonita foto que les recordará de este día. Una nota al margen: la edad máxima en que los niños pueden participar de la celebración es a los 12 años.

Si quieres observar una celebración un poco distinta, la aldea de San Pedro Las Huertas cerca de Ciudad Vieja también celebra el Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe – aunque un poco más modestamente – con una pequeña procesión que recorre las calles de la aldea por la tarde del 12 de diciembre.

n December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe) is celebrated.

On this day in La Antigua, parents dress their young children in typical trajes (traditional costumes) to honor the peasant Juan Diego who, in 1531, saw a vision of a young woman – believed by Catholics to be the Virgin Mary – surrounded by light on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico.

If you’re in La Antigua on the date, you’ll most likely see lots of little boys all dressed up in red and white with small straw hats and painted-on mustaches, and girls with ribbons in their hair, colorful skirts, and lots of beaded necklaces.

After visiting the altar of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the beautiful La Merced church and taking part in the special mass and a procession, families will probably gather outside the church to enjoy something delicious (usually traditional dishes and sweets) sold at the food stalls located there.

You’ll also see tiny scenes set up in front of the church to be used as sets by photographers. These sets have painted images of the Virgin Mary and props such as marimbas, stuffed animals and comales with tortillas, so that the children can pose in these traditional settings and the parents can get a nice photo that will remind them of the day. One side note: the maximum age for children to participate in the celebration is 12 years old.

If you'd like to see another celebration on that day, the aldea of San Pedro Las Huertas near Ciudad Vieja also celebrates the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe – albeit a little more modestly – with a small procession through the streets of the village on the afternoon of December 12th.

Celebrando a la Virgen

E

ntre sones y alabados, música de banda, estallido de cohetes, bombas, luces de colores, repique de campanas, y el sonido del tamborón, da inicio la celebración dedicada a la Patrona del pueblo” – relata Doña Camila Salazar Illescas. Sin duda alguna, los habitantes de Ciudad Vieja en Sacatepéquez se llenan de amor y ternura cuando le cantan la Salve para dar inicio a esta gran celebración dedicada a la Inmaculada Concepción de María, conocida como “La Chapetona”.

La festividad dio inicio este año el 27 de noviembre con las entradas dedicadas a la Santísima Virgen en las que se le reza un novenario, y luego se le entrega la réplica de la imagen al Hermano Mayor que vive en la casa a donde llegará la procesión la primera vez. La Virgen de Concepción es recibida entre aplausos, cantos, rezos y lágrimas por la alegría de que ha salido a las calles para llenar de bendiciones a todos los que con orgullo la ven pasar por calles y avenidas.

Las familias donde llegará la procesión se preparan con la rezadora de la novena y cohetes de vara para recibir a la Virgen, se sirven tamales y ponche y se ofrece una fiesta que se ameniza con marimba pura. Algo muy particular, según cuenta Doña Camila, todas las entradas llegan a una posada, es decir, a una casa.

’With songs and praise….band music, the crack of firecrackers, coloured lights, the chiming of bells and the sound of the big bass drum, the celebrations dedicated to the Patron Saint of the village start off’’ – recounts Doña Camila Salazar Illescas. Without a doubt, the habitants of Ciudad Vieja Sacatepéquez are overcome with love and tenderness when they join in reciting the prayer (‘la Salve’) that opens this great celebration dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of María – known as ‘La Chapetona’.

The festivities started on the 27th November this year with processions and prayers (‘novenarios’) dedicated to the Santísima Virgen, and a small replica of her statue is handed over to the designated host (‘Hermano Mayor’)

who resides in the house where the procession will arrive for the first time.

La Virgen de Concepción is received with applause, song, prayers and a few tears of joy at the fact that She has finally gone out amongst the people to bless all those who proudly see her pass by along streets and avenues.

The family whose house the procession will arrive at will welcome the person who will lead the prayers and prepare the fireworks to receive the Virgen. Tamales and ponche are served and a party is thrown to the sound of marimba. Something rather unusual – says Doña Camila – is that all the processions arrive at a ‘posada’ (in other words, a ‘house’).

Por nueve noches seguidas, esto se repite y al terminar este período la gente muestra su tristeza pues habrá que esperar otro año para vivir de nuevo esta ancestral tradición. Cabe mencionar que la réplica de la Inmaculada ya no regresa a la iglesia, pues va directamente a la casa o posada del Hermano Mayor.

Doña Camila Salazar fue nombrada Hermana Mayor en el año 2008 por el pueblo y hermandad, esto quiere decir que puede dar posada a la Virgen patrona de vestiduras blancas y azules.

Doña Camila recuerda cómo se celebraba antiguamente a la Purísima Concepción de María con una fiesta modesta. Cuenta que en las vísperas del 8 de diciembre su papá – Don German Salazar – le daba un concierto a la Virgen con marimba pura y en donde no había luz eléctrica, la gente colocaba cañas de castilla que servían como candeleros para las candelas de sebo y parafina que iluminaban el paso del alegre rezado. En los cercos de chichicaste se colocaban candiles que se alimentaban con gas y una mecha de trapo y se regaban las calles con agua del tanque.

No había celebración si no se degustaba de un plato de pulique con carne de res e ichintal, el estofado acompañado de arroz.

Los bailes tradicionales como el de los 24 diablos, el torito, las siete virtudes, el baile de las flores y muchos otros más fueron siempre parte importante de la celebración.

Hoy en día hacen su presentación después de la misa mayor que se celebra con la presencia del Arzobispo de Guatemala, Monseñor Julio Vian Morales.

La procesión – también conocida como el rezado – sale a las 4 de la tarde, cada 8 de diciembre y a su paso encontrará alfombras bellamente decoradas, quema de pólvora y las infaltables loas de parlamentos estudiados con muchos meses de anticipación, todo para halagar a la Purísima Concepción de María.

This is all done for 9 nights in a row and at the end of this period, people – with true sadness – contemplate the fact that they must wait another whole year to experience this ancient tradition once more. It’s worth mentioning that the replica of the Inmaculada is not returned to the Church, but remains in the house of the ‘Hermano Mayor’.

Doña Camila Salazar was named ‘Hermana Mayor’ (designated host of the Virgen) in 2008 by her Church and community – this means that in her house she can host the Patron Virgen dressed in white and blue.

She remembers how the Purisima Concepcion de Maria was celebrated with a modest festivity in years gone by. She tells the story of how on the eve of the 8th of December her father – Don German Salazar – used to put on a marimba concert in honor of the Virgen without any electrical light, where people would use cane sticks as candelabras to hold the handmade tallow-and-paraffin candles that would illuminate the path of the joyous procession. Oil lamps with long wicks were hung on the surrounding hedges of chichicaste and the streets were sprinkled with water from the pileta.

It didn’t count as a celebration unless there was a plate of pulique with beef and ichintal (a local vegetable) – the traditional stew with rice.

Traditional dances known as ‘los 24 diablos’ (the ’24 devils’), ‘el torito’ (the ‘little bull’), ‘las siete virtudes’ (the ‘seven virtues’), ‘el baile de las flores’ (the ‘dance of the flowers’) and many others always formed an important part of the celebration.

Nowadays, these dances are performed after the main Mass that is celebrated in the presence of the Archbishop of Guatemala – Monseñor Julio Vian Morales.

The procession leaves at 4pm every 8th of December and will pass through beautifully-decorated alfombras (flower carpets), fireworks and people reciting studiouslypracticed eulogies and prayers – all to honor the Purísima Concepción de María.

El Simbolismo de los Tamales

l tamal guatemalteco es una mezcla de sabores extraordinarios que hacen un deleite al paladar, generando sensaciones que no solo satisfacen al apetito, sino llevan consigo una ancestralidad que se remonta a los tiempos tempranos de la cultura maya.

Lo anterior es observable en el sitio arqueológico de San Bartolo en el departamento de Petén donde existen murales que representan la génesis de los tiempos y en donde aparece una representación del tamal. La datación por carbono-14 de estos murales muestra que datan de alrededor del año 100 a.C.

he Guatemalan tamal is an extraordinary blend of flavors. Unlike the Mexican term that ends with an “e” which many English speakers have learned, in Guatemala the dish is called a tamal (the plural is tamales), and it's a delight for the palate. It not only satisfies the appetite, but it also has a history that dates back to the earliest days of Mayan culture.

At the archaeological site at San Bartolo in the departamento of Petén, there are Mayan murals that depict the beginning of time, and in their design there's a representation of the tamal. Carbon-14 dating shows that these murals date back to around the year 100 B.C.E.

Existen muchas variedades de tamales – no solamente en Guatemala sino en toda Latinoamérica – pero en este país, los tamales más representativos son el tamal colorado (cuya base del recado es el tomate) y el llamado tamal negro (de sabor dulce gracias a que su recado lleva chocolate).

Ambos son una representación simbólica de lo sagrado y lo terrenal en la cosmovisión maya.

Si bien el tamal está presente durante todo el año en las mesas chapinas, es en fechas muy importantes – como el 24, 25 y 31 de diciembre y el 1º de enero – que el tamal se asocia a esta fusión ecléctica entre lo hispano y la tradición maya, generando una riqueza única e irrepetible, tan importante para él guatemalteco quien distingue la calidad por su sabor, textura, color, calidez y envoltura.

El simbolismo del tamal viene enraizado a la creación del universo, donde la masa de maíz – el cereal por excelencia en Mesoamérica – es envuelto por hojas de plátano en el exterior (que funcionan como aislantes térmicos) y en el interior con hojas de maxán (que mantendrán la forma y aumentar el sabor del tamal).

There are many varieties of tamales – not only in Guatemala but throughout Latin America – but in this country, the most common are tamales colorados (“red tamales” with a tomato-based sauce) and tamales negros (“black tamales” which are sweet because chocolate is used in making the sauce). Both are a symbolic representation of the sacred and the mundane in the Mayan worldview or cosmovisión.

While tamales can be found on chapín tables year-round, it's on very important dates – like December 24th, 25th and 31st, and January 1st – that tamales join in an eclectic fusion of the Spanish and the Mayan and become part of a uniquely Guatemalan tradition whose quality can be discerned through taste, texture, color, temperature, and wrapping.

The symbolism of the tamal is rooted in the creation of the universe, where the corn dough – made from the quintessential Mesoamerican grain – is wrapped in plantain leaves on the outside (which function as thermal insulators) and on the inside with maxán leaves (to maintain the tamal's shape and enhance its flavor). map

VARIEDADES DE CAFÉ DE EL CAFETALITO

ace más de dos siglos, sacerdotes jesuitas introdujeron la planta de café en La Antigua Guatemala con el propósito de utilizarla como ornamento para sus jardines. Su explotación como cultivo rentable se llevó a cabo al inicio del siglo XIX. Hoy en día se han identificado ocho regiones productoras de café y de éstas, El Cafetalito produce cafés de Antigua, Fraijanes, Cobán, Atitlán, Huehuetenango y San Marcos.

Además produce otras variedades que – gracias a la forma en que se producen y los tipos de café que se mezclan – podrían considerarse únicas.

Una de estas clases de café se denomina Café Orgánico, y para poder crearlo, se ha respetado el balance natural de las tierras de siembra y así contribuir a fomentar una cultura de producción de café que pueda estar armonía con la naturaleza.

En el caso del Café Mokka, este es una mezcla de cafés de las distintas regiones cafetaleras de Guatemala.

La mezcla de cafés con tueste obscuro y claro logra un sabor a chocolate en el que se inspiraron para su nombre.

Al mezclar cafés de Antigua y de Huehuetenango – y tomando en cuenta que el café de estas regiones tienen una fragancia y aroma singular – El Cafetalito obtiene su café Blend.

Para poder crear su café Descafeinado, El Cafetalito ha desarrollado un proceso único, usando el agua pura y clara de las hermosas montañas de Guatemala para descafeinizar los granos y que estos estén 99.9% libres de cafeína. ore than 2 centuries ago, Jesuit priests introduced the coffee plant to La Antigua Guatemala; with the aim of using it as an ornamental plant in their gardens.

Its exploitation as a commercial crop didn’t start until the beginnings of the 14th Century.

Nowadays, there are 8 recognised coffee-producing regions, and – of them – El Cafetalito produces coffee from Antigua, Fraijanes, Cobán, Atitlán, Huehuetenango and San Marcos. They also produce other varieties that – due to the way they are produced and the different types of coffee that make up their mix – could be considered unique.

One of these types of coffee is known as Café Orgánico. In the cultivation of this coffee the earth’s natural balance has been respected as a way of contributing to promoting a culture of coffee-production that is in harmony with nature.

In the case of their Café Mokka, this is a mix of different coffee blends from several coffee-producing regions of Guatemala. The mix of light- and dark-roasted beans creates a chocolatey flavour that provides the inspiration for its name.

El Cafetalito achieves its Blend coffee through mixing coffees from Antigua and Huehuetenango (two regions that produce a coffee with a singular fragrance and aroma), to produce a blend that promises a cup of coffee with a balanced flavor and aroma.

To create their Descafeinado (De-caffeinated) coffee, El Cafetalito has developed a unique process: using the clear, pure water from the beautiful Guatemalan mountains to rid the beans of 99.9% of their caffeine.

Para poder anudar y mantener íntegro el empaque, se utilizan espigas de cibaque. El amarrado tiene una representación simbólica (con forma de cruz) y representa las líneas que caracterizan los cuatro límites espaciales geográficos: norte, sur, este y oeste – es decir, el universo.

El cibaque es mencionado en el libro sagrado de los quichés, el Popol Vuh, como la esencia de una mujer en la Segunda Creación de los Seres. El análogo de la creación del universo es el vientre materno que gesta a los Hombres de Maíz, y a partir de esta idea los componentes del tamal cobran un especial sentido.

El recado representa la vida y la sangre del universo y un nuevo ser dentro del vientre materno. Las tiras de tomate o chile pimiento representan “el espinazo de la noche” – la Vía Láctea – a la cual todos pertenecemos y cuya visibilidad en una noche sin nubes es alargada en cualquier parte del mundo.

To tie the tamal and keep its packaging intact, a natural twine – cibaque – is used. The way the tamal is tied is a symbolic representation of a cross, and its lines also represents the four geographical areas: north, south, east, and west – in other words, the universe.

Cibaque is mentioned in the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Quiché, as the essence of a woman in the Second Creation of Beings. The creation of the universe is mirrored by the womb where humanity develops, and it's from this idea that the components of a tamal take on a special meaning.

The tamal's sauce, the recado, represents the life and blood of the universe and a new being in the womb. The strips of tomato or pepper represent the “backbone of the night” – the Milky Way – to which we all belong and which can be seen on a cloudless night from anywhere on Earth.
