Que Vivas En Tiempos Interesantes May You Live In Interesting Times Mis Fieles Lectores: Hay un montón de cosas buenas de trabajar como escritor en una revista mensual en vez de en una publicación semanal o diaria. Una de ellas es que solo tengo que escribir mi columna una vez al mes. Generalmente, esto sirve bien para el tipo de cosas en que se especializa Qué Pasa, como el turismo, la historia, las bellezas naturales, las tradiciones culturales y similares.

Pero Fijate Vos no es como el resto de esta excelente revista.

En esta columna, tu humilde corresponsal intenta hacer brillar la luz de la burla en los del servicio público quienes no cumplen con sus funciones, quienes participan en absurdidades para acariciar sus propios egos, y quienes descaradamente promueven sus propias agendas demostrablemente idiotas.

Durante los últimos 2 años y medio de la historia de esta columna, en algunos meses ha sido un poquito difícil llenar todo el espacio de la columna.

Sí, ha habido corrupción y malas acciones y cosas por las cuales uno se indigna o se divierte, pero mucho ha sido deliberadamente ocultado por los poderes fácticos.

Pero de vez en cuando – como hemos visto en las últimas semanas – la presa que detiene la liberación de estos secretos puede agrietarse y desmoronarse, y cuando llega la inundación de acontecimientos y revelaciones, puede ser abrumador. Tanto ha pasado que es difícil de apiñar todo en una sola columna mensual. Y los acontecimientos están sucediendo tan rápidamente que es difícil mantenerse al día. Francamente, me temo que cuando leás esta columna, los

acontecimientos la puedan haber superado. Como dice la vieja maldición china: “Que vivas en tiempos interesantes”.

Lo que sigue es un resumen muy básico – y de ninguna manera totalmente inclusivo – de lo que ha estado pasando aquí en el País de la Eterna Primavera, durante un período que algunos han denominado la “Segunda Primavera Guatemalteca”.* Todo empezó en septiembre de 2006 cuando Guatemala presentó a la ONU un pedido especial: el país necesitaba una comisión especial para ayudar a luchar contra la corrupción en Guatemala. La CICIG (Comisión Internacional Contra la Impunidad en Guatemala) fue creada para buscar e investigar la corrupción que opera en el país – en especial las redes ilegales que podrían beneficiar a los funcionarios públicos.

El 16 de abril, después de 8 meses de investigaciones, la CICIG anunció los resultados de una investigación enorme.

Se había descubierto algo que se llama “La Línea”, una red de funcionarios públicos y de individuos que cometen fraude fiscal.

“La Línea” parece haber sido un esquema que supuestamente cobró a los importadores una cantidad reducida de los impuestos de importación, siempre que los importadores dieran sustanciales mordidas a los funcionarios. El gobierno terminó recibiendo menos de la mitad de los ingresos fiscales de las importaciones que hubiera obtenido en condiciones normales, y supuestamente alrededor de US $120 millones terminaron en los bolsillos de funcionarios corruptos.

En ese día de abril se emitieron un total de 47 órdenes de captura, pero la más importante puede haber sido para el presunto líder de esta supuesta banda criminal: Juan Carlos Monzón, el Secretario Privado de la (entonces) Vicepresidenta Roxana Baldetti y presuntamente el jefe superior de “La Línea”.

Comenzaron a difundirse de inmediato los rumores que la Vice estaba metida en el fraude, sobre todo cuando se publicó información que la CICIG había acumulado a través de sus escuchas telefónicas. Esta información mencionó “La Señora”, “La 2”, y “La R”.

Estos términos fueron vistos como implicaciones que la Vicepresidenta estaba involucrada en esta red que estaba a cargo de su mano derecha – porque ella podría ser “La Señora” (la primera mujer vicepresidenta en la historia de Guatemala), “La Dos” (la Vice, segunda en poder), y “La R” (Roxana).

El 25 de abril, decenas de miles de personas de toda Guatemala se reunieron en la Plaza de la Constitución frente al Palacio Nacional en la Ciudad de Guatemala para protestar contra la corrupción gubernamental. Esto fue solo la primera de las protestas que han seguido semanalmente desde entonces. Las protestas se han extendido a casi todo el país (incluso hemos tenido unas pocas aquí en La Antigua) y han participado personas de todos los niveles de la sociedad guatemalteca.

Una semana y media después de esa primera protesta, la CICIG anunció el 6 de mayo que abría una investigación sobre la participación de la Vicepresidenta en la banda criminal, y dos

My Faithful Readers: There are a lot of good things about working as a writer for a monthly magazine instead of a weekly or daily publication.

One of them is that you only have to come up with a column once a month. This is usually fine for the sorts of things that Qué Pasa specializes in, like tourism, history, natural beauty, cultural traditions, and the like.

But Fijate Vos is not like the rest of this excellent magazine. In this column, your humble correspondent attempts to shine the light of ridicule on those in public service who do not fulfill their duties, who engage in ego-stroking absurdities, and who shamelessly promote their own demonstrably idiotic agendas.

Over the past 2½ years of this column’s history, some months it’s been a little tough filling the column inches. Yes, there’s been corruption and wrongdoing and things to be outraged or amused by, but a lot of it has been purposely hidden by the powers-thatbe. But occasionally – as we have seen over the past month or two – the dam holding back these secrets can crack and crumble, and when the flood of events and revelations comes, it can be overwhelming. There’s been so much that’s happened that it’s difficult to squeeze everything into a single monthly column. And events are happening so quickly that it’s hard to keep up. Frankly, I’m afraid that by the time you read this, events may have outstripped this column. As the old Chinese curse goes, “May you live in interesting times.”

What follows is an extremely basic – and by no means all-inclusive – rundown of what’s been going on here in the Land of Eternal Springtime, during a period that some have labeled the “Second Guatemalan Spring.”* It all started in September of 2006 when Guatemala went to the UN with a special request: the country needed a special commission to help fight against corruption in Guatemala. The CICIG (International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala) was created to seek out and

días después, el 8 de mayo, el Presidente Otto Pérez Molina realizó una conferencia de prensa para anunciar que la Vicepresidenta había renunciado a su cargo.

En medio de la reacción principalmente jubilosa en todo el país, las protestas continuaron en las semanas después. El 16 de mayo hubo diversas marchas que convergieron en otra protesta masiva – esta vez con más de 60,000 personas expresando su ira frente al Palacio Nacional en la capital. Ese mismo día, por toda de Guatemala se llevaron a cabo otras manifestaciones en las principales ciudades, en pueblos más pequeños e incluso en algunas aldeas, con la participación de miles más.

Con el paso del tiempo, se han hecho más arrestos, entre ellos el Presidente del Banco de Guatemala y el jefe del IGSS. Estas detenciones – junto con las de decenas de otros servidores públicos y funcionarios – se derivan de las investigaciones de otros presuntos escándalos de fraude y corrupción.

También siguen las deserciones del gobierno: el Ministro del Gobernación, la Ministra del Medio Ambiente, y el Jefe de Inteligencia Estratégica renunciaron a mediados de mayo, y la sabiduría convencional es que más renuncias seguramente seguirán – tal vez incluso la del propio Presidente, aunque ha declarado públicamente en varias ocasiones que no va a renunciar y servirá el período restante de su mandato. Ese mandato dura solo hasta el final de este año.

Con todo el descontento con el sistema actual y la percepción de su corrupción independiente de qué partido tiene el poder, ha habido llamamientos generalizados en toda la sociedad guatemalteca para una reforma de las leyes relativas a las elecciones y de los partidos políticos, e incluso muchos están pidiendo un Asamblea Nacional Constituyente para reestructurar el sistema del gobierno a partir de cero con una nueva constitución.

investigate corruption operating in the country – especially illegal networks that could benefit public servants.

On April 16th, after 8 months of investigations, the CICIG announced the results of a humongous investigation. It had uncovered something called “La Línea” (“The Line”), a network of public servants and private individuals committing tax fraud.

“La Línea” appears to have been a scheme that reportedly charged importers a reduced amount of import tax as long as the importers provided substantial bribes to officials. The government ended up receiving less than half of the tax revenue on imports that it would have earned under normal circumstances, and approximate US $120 million allegedly ended up in corrupt officials’ pockets.

On that April day, a total of 47 arrest orders were issued, but the most important one may have been for the alleged leader of this supposed criminal gang: Juan Carlos Monzón, the Private Secretary of the (then) Vice President Roxana Baldetti and allegedly the top boss of “La Línea.”

Rumors began to spread immediately that the Veep was in on the fraud, especially when some of the information that the CICIG had accumulated through its wiretaps was released. This information made mention of “La Señora,” “La 2,” and “La R.” These were widely seen as implications that the Vice President was involved in this network being run by her righthand man – after all, she could be “the Lady” (the first female Vice President in Guatemalan history), “The Number Two” (the Veep), and “the R”(Roxana).

On April 25th, tens of thousands people from across Guatemala gathered in the Plaza de lva Constitución in front of the National Palace in Guatemala City to protest government corruption. This was just the first of protests that have continued weekly since then. The protests have spread to almost the entire country (we’ve even had a few here in La Antigua) and have involved people from all levels of Guatemalan society.

A week and a half after that first

protest, the CICIG announced on May 6th that they were opening an investigation into the participation of the Vice President in the criminal ring, and two days later, on May 8th, President Otto Pérez Molina held a press conference to announce that the Vice President had resigned her position.

Amid the generally jubilant reaction across the country, the protests continued in the weeks that followed. On May 16th various marches we held and converged for yet another massive protest – this time with more than 60,000 people voicing their anger in front of the National Palace in the capital. That same day, other demonstrations were held in major cities, smaller towns, and even some tiny villages across Guatemala, involving thousands more.

As time has gone on, more arrests have been made, including the head of Guatemala’s Central Bank and the head of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute. These arrests – along with those of dozens of other public servants and functionaries – stem from the investigations of other alleged fraud and corruption scandals.

There also continue to be defections from the administration: the Interior Minister, the Environmental Minister, and the Chief of Strategic Intelligence all resigned in mid-May, and conventional wisdom is that more resignations will surely follow – maybe even that of the President himself, although he has publicly stated several times that he won’t resign and will serve out the remaining period of his term in office. That term in office lasts only through the end of this year.

With all the unrest and the unhappiness with the current system and its perceived corruption regardless of what party is in power, there have been widespread calls from across Guatemalan society for reform of the laws regarding elections and political parties, with many even calling for a National Constituent Assembly to re-structure the government from the ground up with a new constitution.

l pasado mes de mayo, nosotros de Qué Pasa estuvimos de visita en la tienda de C’Santos en La Antigua para unirnos a la celebración de su quinto aniversario. Desde el momento de nuestra llegada pudimos ser testigos de todos los detalles que habían preparado para que clientes y amigos pudieran ser parte de esta merecida fiesta.

uring the past month of May, we from Qué Pasa paid a visit to C’Santos in La Antigua in order to join in the store’s fifth anniversary celebrations. El Sabor Dulce de La Antigua

uando visitas La Antigua, seguramente tienes presente regresar a casa con algunos dulces típicos para compartir. Qué Pasa te cuenta más, con nuestra plática con la Señora María Cristina de Durán quién ha perpetuado los antojos de grandes y chicos por muchos años con la tienda de dulces típicos de Doña María Gordillo. ¿En qué año se funda la Dulcería de Doña María Gordillo?

La tienda fue fundada en 1872 por la Madre Dolores Ortiz, monja exclaustrada del Convento de Santa Clara, lugar donde aprendió las recetas para los dulces.

Todos los dulces de la tienda son trabajados de manera artesanal por sus trabajadores. ¿Cuántos tipos diferentes de dulces forman parte de las recetas de la tienda?

Se llegó a tener 64 variedades de dulces en años atrás, pero actualmente hay más de 130 variedades, ya que, con el paso del tiempo, he ido creando y/o modificando los que ya se tenían. ¿Nos puede mencionar cuáles son algunas de las innovaciones que ustedes tienen?

La Cocada Real es una receta creada por mi persona y tiene una textura

bastante cremosa. También les puedo mencionar el Dulce del Hermano Pedro y el Dulce Barroco, entre otros. ¿Todos los dulces se pueden comprar siempre?

No, porque entre semana no hay mucha demanda, pero los días que se puede encontrar todo el surtido de dulces, son los sábados y domingos, ya que somos visitados por los turistas nacionales y extranjeros. ¿Cuáles son los dulces que más se venden?

Los Colochos de Guayaba, las famosas Canillitas de Leche, los higos, las cajitas de mazapán, el camote, el chilacayote y la Cocada Real. Aunque casi todos los dulces gustan, las Canillitas de Leche son las que todo el mundo prueba y quiere llevarse.

Por ser la tienda más famosa de dulces en Antigua Guatemala, ustedes han tenido muchos visitantes. ¿Qué personalidades han comprado aquí?

Muchísimas. Nos visitan personas de todo el mundo, de los cuáles – si no estoy mal – solo dos fotos tenemos, ya que la mayoría vienen de particular y nosotros no queremos hacerlos pasar un mal rato con fotografías o preguntas; es por eso que

los vemos, atendemos y nada más. Que recuerde, nos han visitado Don Francisco y la presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet. ¿Cómo entregan ustedes los pedidos?

A todos nuestros clientes, les entregamos los dulces en una caja blanca que tiene impresa una foto del Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. Este diseño fue realizado por mi esposo, ya que el Palacio es de lo más representativo de La Antigua Guatemala. Pero si alguno de nuestros clientes desea un empaque más especial, tenemos unas cajas de presentación pintadas a mano, las cuales tienen un costo adicional. Queremos siempre agradar a nuestros clientes.

Para nosotros, como parte de la Dulcería, es un orgullo pertenecer a esta familia y trabajar aquí, pero al mismo tiempo es una gran responsabilidad.

hen you visit La Antigua, you’ll probably want to take some traditional Guatemala sweets (dulces típicos) back home with you to share. Qué Pasa tells you more, with our conversation with María Cristina de Durán, who has helped enable the sweet tooth of adults and children for many years at the Doña Maria Gordillo Sweet Shop.

What year was the Doña María Gordillo sweet shop founded?

The store was founded in 1872 by Mother Dolores Ortiz, a non-cloistered nun from the Convent of Santa Clara, where she learned the recipes for sweet treats.

All the sweets at the shop are handmade by your employees. How many different types of sweets do you have at the store?

Years ago, there were 64 varieties of sweets, but currently we have more than 130 different kinds, because over the years I’ve been creating and/or modifying some that we already had in the repertoire.

Can you tell is about some of these innovations that you’ve come up with?

The Cocada Real is one. This coconut-based sweet was created by me, and it has a rather creamy texture.

I should also mention the Dulce del Hermano Pedro and the Dulce Barroco, as well.

Are all the different varieties always available?

No. During the week, there’s not a whole lot of demand, but on Saturdays and Sundays you can find the entire

assortment of sweets, because we have a lot of tourists, both domestic and foreign, who visit us.

What are the best-selling sweets?

Colochos de Guayaba, the famous Canillitas de Leche, candied figs, little boxes of marzipan, camote, chilacayote, and the Cocada Real. Even though all of the sweets are liked, the Canillitas de Leche are what everybody tries and then wants to take with them.

As the most famous sweet shop in Antigua Guatemala, you’ve had many visitors.

What celebrities have purchased sweets here?

Many. People from around the world visit us, but – if I’m not mistaken – we’ve only got two photos, since most of them visit us as private individuals and we don’t want to impose on them with photographs or questions. So we see them, we serve them, and that’s it. Those that I remember include Don Francisco and the president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet.

How do you present the customers’ orders?

We present all our customers with their sweets in a white box which has a picture of the Royal Palace of the Captains General printed on it. This design was made by my husband, because the Palace is one of the things that best represents La Antigua Guatemala. But if any of our customers want special packaging, we have handpainted presentation boxes, which cost extra. We always want to please our customers.

For us, as part of the Sweet Shop, we’re very proud to belong to this family and to work here, but at the same time, it’s a big responsibility.

She will offer a show of music and dance – accompanied by her accordion – at the Convento de las Capuchinas, sponsored by the Alianza Francesa. This show is also a celebration of the Alianza Francesa de Guatemala’s 95th anniversary.

The festivities will be a great opportunity to enjoy the genius of an incredible singer as well as a chance to come together with both traditional and modern music to honor those who promote Francophone culture in Guatemala.

Since 2011, Marion Sila has toured Latin America thanks to the network of French Alliances, traveling from the south of France by way of Paris, and then on this special day, arriving in La Antigua to present a melodic performance of jazz and acoustic and electronic music.

ergio Chávez ha dedicado su vida a la arquitectura – entre La Antigua y la Ciudad de Guatemala donde nació hace 58 años. Admirador y conocedor de las Bellas Artes desde muy joven, un día incursionó en la escultura, encontrando ahí un refugio en el que se resguarda durante su tiempo libre.

Como muchos, comenzó con lo figurativo, caminando año con año de lo fino a lo más fuerte, de la arcilla al bronce, del granito al mármol, trabajando tanto en una base de piedra de patio como en una columna de madera antigua.

Se siente cómodo y seguro con la talla directa, y no teme de los formatos grandes. Gusta particularmente del cuerpo humano y sus movimientos caprichosos, poniendo especial énfasis en las manos, en el cabello y especialmente en los pies – un recurrente tema extraído de su contexto corporal, volviéndolo único protagonista de la obra que, con seriedad o con cierta picardía, utiliza como una interesante metáfora del andar.

Durante el mes de junio, sus obras serán parte del binomio que expondrá sus obras en Decora-dos. La exposición se inaugura el 3 de junio en el Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (frente al Parque Central de La Antigua) a las 6 PM. Estará abierta hasta el 30 de junio.

ergio Chávez has dedicated his life to architecture – between La Antigua and Guatemala City where he was born 58 years ago. An admirer and connoisseur of the Fine Arts from an early age, one day he ventured into the world of sculpture and found a refuge there where he spent much of his free time.

Like many, he began with the figurative, and as time went on, his tastes did as well – moving from the finer to the more powerful works, from clay to bronze, from granite to marble, working as hard on a stone supporting base as on an antique wooden column.

He feels comfortable and confident carving directly and is not afraid of large formats.

He particularly likes the human body and its whimsical movements, and he puts special emphasis on hands, hair, and especially the feet – a recurring theme that’s removed from its bodily context and made into a unique protagonist of the work that, seriously or impishly, uses it as an interesting metaphor for walking.

His works will be part of a dual show called Decora-Dos during the month of June.

The exhibition opens at 6 PM on June 3rd at the Royal Palace of the Captains General (opposite Parque Central in La Antigua). The show runs through June 30th.

uando decidió seguir su inquietud por las manualidades en madera, Lisandro Gordillo jamás imaginó que la forma única en que ha logrado integrar materiales descartados – algunos incluso olvidados en el fondo del lago de Izabal – le permitiría crear estructuras únicas que, durante el mes de junio, van a exhibirse en uno de los escenarios más majestuosos de La Antigua: el Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, conocido hoy en día como el Centro Cultural Real Palacio.

Si bien su interés lo llevó inicialmente a crear pequeñas obras (como casas para aves), fue la influencia del maestro mexicano Esteban Chapital – quien trabaja con materiales antiguos, reciclándolos y adaptándolos para ser reutilizados – que le llevó a una búsqueda más profunda de materiales que pudieran cobrar vida a través de sus manos y tuvieran una nueva funcionalidad.

Es pues, en conjunto con Sergio Chávez y bajo el título de Decora-Dos, que Lisandro Gordillo presentará réplicas perfectas de monumentos históricos de La Antigua, recreados con distintas maderas y materiales que ha encontrado en diversos lugares como el Lago de Izabal y la Sierra de las Minas. Las piezas en exhibición también podrán ser adquiridas durante el tiempo que dure la exposición.

La exposición se inaugura el miércoles 3 de junio en el Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (frente al Parque Central de La Antigua) a las 6 PM. Estará abierta hasta el martes 30 de junio. Gracias a las colaboraciones de Opcióm3, Ensamble Arte y DSJ San Jeronimo.

hen he decided to pursue his interest in woodworking, Lisandro Gordillo never imagined that the unique way he integrates discarded materials – some of which had even been forgotten at the bottom of Lake Izabal – would allow him to create one-of-a-kind works, structures that will be on display during June at one of the most majestic venues in La Antigua: the Royal Palace of the Captains General, today known as the Real Palacio Cultural Center.

Although his interest initially led him to create small works (like birdhouses), it was the influence of the Mexican master Esteban Chapital – who works with old materials, recycling them and adapting them for reuse – that led him to a deeper search for materials which could be reborn through his hands and have a new use.

Now, along with Sergio Chávez and under the title Decora-Dos, Lisandro Gordillo presents perfect replicas of some of La Antigua’s historic monuments, recreated in different woods and materials found in diverse places such as Lake Izabal and the Sierra de las Minas mountain range. The pieces on display can also be purchased during the duration of the show.

Por La Antigua / Around La Antigua

La Ermita del Santo Calvario

S

i caminas por la 7a Calle Oriente y cruzas hacia el sur – por la Calle de los Pasos – hasta el final, encontrarás una colorida alameda conocida como la Alameda del Calvario, y justo al final está La Ermita del Santo Calvario.

Su construcción dio inicio en noviembre de 1618 y se concluyó muchos años después (alrededor de 1655) gracias a las limosnas recaudadas por la Tercera Orden de San Francisco y uno de sus miembros más reconocidos, el entonces Hermano Pedro quien hoy se conoce como el Santo Hermano Pedro, el único santo católico de Guatemala (así como el único santo de toda América Central). Se dice que El Calvario fue construida a exactamente 1,322 pasos del templo de San Francisco El Grande, replicando así la cantidad de pasos que recorrió Jesús en su Vía Sacra.

– todas en el mismo color que la ermita – y al centro encontrarás un jardín en el que claramente salta a la vista el hermoso árbol de Esquisúchil que sembró el Hermano Pedro sí mismo en marzo de 1657. A este árbol (que florea nada más tres veces al año) se le atribuyen propiedades milagrosas, y algunos utilizan las flores caídas para crear infusiones que también se dicen son curativas.

Hay un pequeño espacio con columpios para los niños, una caseta donde se venden velas y suvenires religiosos, baños para los visitantes y algunas bancas en las cuales se puede descansar. En la parte de afuera, además de la tradicional cruz en piedra que se acostumbra observar en las iglesias de La Antigua, encontrarás una pequeña plaza en donde los días domingos hay ventas de antojitos y comida típica.

f you walk down 7a Calle Oriente and turn toward the south – along Calle de los Pasos – and continue to the end, you’ll find a colorful boulevard known as Alameda del Calvario, and at the very end of it is the Ermita del Santo Calvario.

The construction of this “Hermitage of the Holy Calvary” began in November of 1618 and was finally completed many years later (sometime around 1655) thanks to the alms collected by the Third Order of San Francisco and one of its most renowned members, the man then known as Brother Peter – Hermano Pedro – and now as Santo Hermano Pedro, the only Catholic saint from Guatemala (as well as the only saint from all of Central America). It’s said that El Calvario was built exactly 1,322 steps from the San Francisco El Grande church in honor of the number of steps that Jesus took along the Path to the Cross.

You’ll see several chapels – all the same color as the hermitage itself – within the complex, and in its center you’ll also discover a garden where one of the first things to catch your eye will be the beautiful Esquisúchil tree which was planted in March of 1657 by Hermano Pedro himself.

Miraculous properties are attributed to this tree (which blooms about three times per year), and some use the fallen flowers to create infusions which are also said to be curative.

There’s a small area with swings for children, a kiosk where candles and religious souvenirs are sold, bathroom facilities for visitors, and a few benches for resting. Outside, in addition to the stone cross that’s commonly seen in front of La Antigua’s churches, you’ll find a small plaza where snacks and traditional foods are sold on Sundays.

upongamos que, después de navegar la carta de vinos de un restaurante, finalmente has escogida la botella perfecta. ¿Qué sigue?

El sommelier o capitán iniciará la ceremonia presentando la botella a la persona que la escogió. Lo que deberás hacer para asegurarte que es la botella que escogiste es verificar la información en la etiqueta: la casa vinícola, la región o cepa(s), y la añada. Si apruebas la botella, el sommelier procederá con la apertura de esta y te ofrecerá el corcho. ¡No lo huelas! Solamente asegúrate que está en buen estado y que no se ha filtrado el vino, lo cual sería indicación que el aire se ha filtrado en tu botella durante su almacenamiento, echándolo a perder.

Lo que sí deberás oler es el pequeño sorbo que el sommelier te sirve en tu copa a la hora de catarlo. El motivo de este ritual es asegurarte que el vino no está echado a perder. Si lo está, olerá a enmohecido. No es necesario girar la copa para remover el vino a este punto; si lo haces disfrazarás el olor a moho con el oxígeno del aire. Si la primera sensación al olerlo es buena, entonces ya podrás girar tu copa para revelar plenamente el bouquet del vino y finalmente beber y disfrutar el primer sorbo. A continuación, el sommelier servirá el vino a todos comenzando por las damas, luego los caballeros, y finalmente la persona que haya ordenado la botella.

What comes next?

The sommelier or wine steward will start the ceremony by presenting the bottle to the person who selected it.

What you should do is make sure that it’s the bottle you chose by verifying the information on the label: the vineyard or winery, region or varietal(s), and the vintage.

If you approve of the bottle, the sommelier will proceed to open it and will offer you the cork. Do not smell it! Just make sure that

it’s in good condition and that no wine has filtered through; this would indicate that air has leaked into your bottle during storage, ruining it.

What you should smell is the tiny amount of wine that the sommelier will serve in your glass. The reason for this ritual is to make sure that the wine is not spoiled. If it is, it will smell moldy. It’s not necessary to swirl the glass and move the wine around at this point; if you do, you’ll disguise any musty odor with the oxygen from the air.

If your first impression is good when you smell it, then you can swirl your glass to fully reveal the bouquet of the wine and finally drink the first sip and enjoy. Then the sommelier will serve everyone, starting with the ladies, then the men, and finally the person who ordered the bottle.

Now, the only thing left to do is to make a toast... and, of course, enjoy.

Boat services start at 6:30 AM and the last one departs Panajachel at 7 PM. Each village has a different schedules for boats departing the town, so make sure you ask the captain beforehand about specific times. Boats leave approximately every half hour. Have some change at hand to pay the exact amount, and pay close attention to special warnings about the weather or changes in schedule. Remember that you can also book private boat rentals.

a Antigua es un famoso destino de bodas, contando incluso con una temporada especial en que es posible contar, al menos, diez bodas llevándose a cabo durante el fin de semana en los diversos hoteles, salones y monumentos.

Si estás buscando un lugar donde casarte y has puesto tu ojo en uno de los monumentos de la ciudad, deberás acudir a las oficinas del Consejo Nacional para la Protección de La Antigua Guatemala (CNPAG) ubicadas en la 2a Avenida y la 2a Calle Oriente (Convento de las Capuchinas) y dirigirte a la sección de Relaciones Públicas para presentar tu solicitud de reservación.

Los requerimientos no son difíciles de cumplir y varían únicamente en el costo de la renta (dependiendo del tamaño y qué instalaciones del monumento vayan a utilizarse). Está permitido hacer uso del lugar por un espacio de cinco horas (hasta las 11 PM) y, en ese tiempo, está permitida la música, siempre y cuando sea proporcionada por conjuntos de marimba pura u orquestas de cámara, aunque música grabada y amplificada está permitida, si el volumen máximo no supera los 50 decibeles.

Estos son los monumentos que puedes solicitar para llevar a cabo tu boda: El Convento de las Capuchinas – conocido originalmente como Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza – se ubica en la esquina de la 2a Avenida Norte y la 2a Calle Oriente. El costo del evento varía dependiendo de las áreas que puedes usar, con un precio de renta que va desde los Q4,000 hasta Q7,000.

a Antigua is a popular destination for weddings. There is even a special season in which the city might host at least ten weddings during the weekend, taking place at various hotels, halls, and monuments.

If you are looking for a place to get married and you have set your mind on the event taking place in one of the city’s monuments, in order to do so, you must go to the offices of the National Council for the Protection of La Antigua Guatemala (CNPAG) located at the corner of 2a Avenida y 2a Calle, (inside the Convento de las Capuchinas). Visit the Public Relations office to submit your reservation request.

The requirements are not burdensome and differ only in the rental cost (which depends on the size of the monument and what facilities are to be used). Use of the site for up to five hours is permitted (until 11 PM), and during that time music is permitted, provided it is performed by marimba ensembles or chamber orchestras, although recorded and amplified music is permitted as long as the maximum volume does not exceed 50 decibels.

These are the available monuments you can request for your wedding: The Convent of Las Capuchinas – originally known as Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza – it’s located on the corner 2a Avenida Norte and 2a Calle Oriente. The event costs

l edificio es una joya arquitectónica de estilo renacentista colonial. Uno de los detalles que sobresalen es su exuberante techo de madera de caoba que tiene en el centro una imponente lámpara de hierro forjado de estilo colonial que cuenta con 96 luces.

Tiene tres salas, y en una de ellas – la de exposiciones permanentes – puedes encontrar obras de varios artistas reconocidos a nivel mundial, incluyendo Manolo Gallardo – con sus múltiples obras de pintura y escultura incluyendo la Mona Lisa guatemalteca – y Efraín Recinos, quien se hace presente con varias de sus reconocidas obras – como Música Grande y Un Artista y Siete Estorbos. he building is an architectural gem of the Colonial Renaissance style. E

l Volcán de Fuego es un imponente estrato volcán ubicado en la frontera de dos departamentos: Sacatepéquez y Chimaltenango.

Su ubicación, a un poco más de 15 kilómetros de La Antigua, hace que sea visible casi desde cualquier punto de la ciudad y que lugares como Ciudad Vieja, San Miguel Escobar, Alotenango y San Miguel Dueñas puedan apreciar – casi a diario – las erupciones y retumbos de este inquieto gigante.

Al observarlo junto al Volcán Acatenango en el horizonte, podemos distinguirlo porque es el único que todos los días tiene una fumarola a distintas horas. (A estos dos volcanes, con su combinación de tres picos, juntos se les conoce comúnmente como “La Horqueta”.)

En varias ocasiones el nivel de actividad del Volcán de Fuego ha crecido tanto que, debido a las erupciones y al humo y a la ceniza, se han tenido que evacuar pueblos cercanos e incluso cerrar el Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora que se ubica en la ciudad capital.

Si bien las explosiones de este volcán – que tiene una elevación de 3,763 metros sobre el nivel del mar – son conocidas por ser bastante violentas y han marcado los senderos por los cuales ha descendido, su falda cuenta con una vegetación densa hasta casi los 3,000 metros.

Arriba de esa altura, el volcán está completamente desnudo.

El Volcán de Fuego (que incluso parece con un soplo de humo en el oficial escudo colonial de la ciudad de La Antigua) es uno de los más activos – si no el más activo – volcán en Guatemala. Para aquellos que disfrutan de los retos y las actividades al aire libre acompañadas de adrenalina y vistas espectaculares, el Volcán de Fuego es uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos del país.

olcán de Fuego is a towering stratovolcano located on the border of two departments: Sacatepéquez and Chimaltenango. Its location, just over 15 kilometers (a little more than 9 miles) from La Antigua, makes it visible from almost any point of the city, and places like Ciudad Vieja, San Miguel Escobar, Alotenango, and San Miguel Dueñas can easily appreciate – almost daily – the eruptions and rumblings of this restless giant.

Seeing it on the horizon alongside the double summit of Volcán Acatenango, it’s easy to pick out because it’s the only one that frequently and fairly consistently sports a fumarole. (These two volcanoes, with their combination of three peaks, are commonly known together as “La Horqueta”, or “The Pitchfork.”) On several occasions Volcán de Fuego’s activity level has increased to such an extent that nearby villages and towns have had to be evacuated due to the eruptions and smoke and ashes, and at times even La Aurora International Airport, located in the capital city, has had to be shut down.

This volcano, with an elevation of 3,763 meters (12,346 feet) above sea level, has experienced explosions that have been known to be quite violent. Although these eruptions have left their marks on the volcano’s flanks, there’s still dense vegetation covering the sides up to almost 3,000 meters (9,850 feet). Above that height, the volcano is completely bare.

Volcán de Fuego (which even appears with an accompanying puff of smoke on the official colonial coat of arms of the city of La Antigua) is one of the most active – if not the single most active – volcano in Guatemala. For those who enjoy challenges and outdoor activities that are accompanied by adrenaline and spectacular views, Volcán de Fuego is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country.

Tradición y Misticismo: Corpus Christi en Patzún Escrito por / Written by: Sofía Letona

atzún es un municipio del departamento de Chimaltenango, a 83 kilómetros de la ciudad de Guatemala y a 44 kilómetros de La Antigua (1 hora de camino en auto).

Existen dos versiones que explican de dónde proviene el nombre Patzún. La primera versión asegura que el nombre deriva del kakchiquel pa – que significa “dentro” – y tzum – que significa “cuero” o “donde hay cueros” – con lo que Patzún significaría “dentro del lugar de los cueros”. La otra versión dice que pa quiere decir “lugar” y so (evolucionado hasta convertirse en tzun) es la palabra que nombra a un girasol silvestre, dando como resultado “el lugar de los girasoles silvestres”.

Este municipio que alberga un poco más de 50,000 habitantes es donde se lleva a cabo una de las celebraciones más antiguas del país: el Corpus Christi.

Esta conmemoración católica se celebra 60 días después de la Pascua de Resurrección, dando así inicio a las festividades litúrgicas ordinarias y poniendo fin a las celebraciones pascuales.

En este día de espiritualidad y gozo se entrelazan la tradición y el misticismo. Los vecinos se organizan desde muy temprano para crear alfombras – por las que pasará el cortejo del corpus – así como altares a lo largo de la ruta de la procesión donde el sacerdote descansará y colocará el corpus, bendiciendo así a las familias que habitan el lugar.

El recorrido del cortejo del Corpus Christi es de un poco más de 3 kilómetros, y durante el mismo se puede escuchar la música de la marimba. Luego habrá bailes tradicionales como el Baile del Venado – en los que los artistas que danzan se visten con pieles de venado – y el Baile de Moros – en el que los artistas utilizan máscaras tradicionales representando animales o personajes. Además, hay un despliegue de fuegos artificiales en los que no pueden faltar los toritos – construcciones de madera en forma de toro a las que se les integran fuegos artificiales y que portan estos bailarines valientes. Danzarán por las calles mientras las luces iluminan su camino y los pequeños puestos de comida típica y antojitos.

atzún is a municipio in the department of Chimaltenango, 83 kilometers (51 miles) from Guatemala City and 44 kilometers (27 miles) from La Antigua (about a 1-hour trip by car).

There are two explanations for the origin of the name Patzún. The first says that the name comes from the Kakchiquel Maya words pa – meaning “in” or “inside” – and tzum – meaning “leather” or “where there are hides” – making Patzún mean “inside the place of leather.” The other version says that pa means “place” and that so (which over time evolved into tzun) is the word for a type of wild sunflower, resulting in “the place of wild sunflowers.”

This municipio with its slightly more than 50,000 inhabitants is where one of the oldest celebrations in the country is held: the Corpus Christi. This Catholic celebration takes place 60 days after Easter and starts the period of ordinary liturgical feasts, officially ending Easter celebrations and observances.

On this joyful and tradition-filled day, spirituality and mysticism intertwine. From the early hours, neighbors gather to create beautiful alfombras, or carpets – over which the corpus procession will pass – as well as altars along the procession’s route where the priest will stop and place the corpus, thus blessing the families who live there.

The route of the Corpus Christi procession is a little over 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) and during the procession there’s marimba music in the air. Afterward, there are traditional dances such as the Baile del Venado (Dance of the Deer) – where the dancers are costumed in deer hides – and the Baile de Moros (Dance of Moors) – with dancers using traditional masks representing animals or characters. There is also a fireworks display including the famous torito, or little bull.

This is a wooden framework in the form of a bull which the dancers wear and which has fireworks incorporated into the structure. These brave, risk-taking dancers prance through the streets, lighting the way with fireworks and winding their way through the many small stands selling snacks and traditional foods.

arte de la experiencia de visitar y llegar a conocer realmente Guatemala requiere que te sumerjas en varios aspectos importantes que te darán una idea de cómo son los guatemaltecos y cómo viven. Uno de ellos es el fascinante mundo de la gastronomía guatemalteca, y tal y como vas a descubrirlo durante tu visita, hay un pequeño favorito que puede hacerse presente a cualquier hora del día y combinarse con innumerables guarniciones: el frijol.

El frijol común que vas a poder apreciar en Guatemala – empacado en las tiendas y vendido por libra en los mercados – tiene como nombre

formal Phaseolus vulgaris y es una de las principales fuentes de proteína vegetal para los guatemaltecos. The common bean that you’ll see in Guatemala has the formal name Phaseolus vulgaris and is a major source of vegetable protein for Guatemalans. Most of the beans consumed in the country come from the north (specifically the department of Petén) and the southeast (from the departments of Jutiapa, Chiquimula, and Santa Rosa), although some are grown in other areas of the country.

In addition to their high nutritional content, beans – whose role in people’s culinary lives has been recognized for more than 5,000 years – are surely one of the foods that Guatemalans like best and prepare a lot of. Refried, whole, blended smooth, with rice, with tortillas, with bread, white, black, pinto, and in other colors like yellow and red, beans are a culinary treasure.

If you thought it was very easy to grow and harvest beans, you should know that – depending on the kind and variety of the species – it can take from 100 to 140 days for the beans to be ready to harvest. Although beans are a sturdy crop and they’re quite hard when raw, a successful harvest depends both on the climate and ideal weather during the planting period (which is actually quite short: only during the months of March and April and then again from June to July).

Those born on Q’anil are blessed with the ability to give timely advice. They’re patient and creative, as well as being defenders of nature. They have a favored relationship with Mother Earth, and thus are good farmers as well as advocates to petition for food, rain, and abundance in life. Success in life comes slowly. While the Q’anil spirit is restless and their interior spiritual strength is a little weak, the emotional ties that are created with others give them strength.

undada en 2004 por Alice Lee So Fong y Greg Schwendinger, CasaSito es una organización sin fines de lucro que aumenta las oportunidades de educación en Guatemala para que las personas indígenas que viven en la pobreza puedan asistir a la escuela, recibir una enseñanza de calidad y obtener las habilidades que necesitan para mejorar sus vidas.

El programa de becas integrales de CasaSito ofrece asistencia financiera a los estudiantes en los niveles básico, secundario y universitario.

Además de la asistencia financiera, CasaSito ofrece una amplia gama de servicios y programas que contribuyen al desarrollo personal y académico del estudiante.

Uno de estos programas es el “Teatro del Oprimido”, una herramienta educativa y terapéutica en la que los participantes crean una obra de teatro basada en sus experiencias de la vida real. La presentación de este año fue particularmente poderosa porque la obra hizo frente a la discriminación étnica contra los guatemaltecos indígenas. Caites cuenta la historia de dos mujeres jóvenes – una indígena y una ladina – quienes superan los prejuicios y se convierten en amigas. Se enfrentan el desprecio de sus padres, sus maestros y sus compañeros que afirman que la joven ladina está bajando su estatus social.

A través del programa “Teatro del Oprimido”, estos jóvenes han aprendido a defender sus derechos. Uno dijo: “Me han hecho esto a mí, pero... no, yo no me defendí. Pero ya después del teatro, ¡sí!” Él rompió la cultura del silencio y se ha convertido en un agente del cambio.

Este es solo un ejemplo del trabajo de transformación que ha hecho CasaSito en las vidas de 11 jóvenes guatemaltecos de bajos hasta muy bajos ingresos. Estos jóvenes de 15 a 18 años han experimentado pocas oportunidades educativas y de crecimiento, y muchos de ellos viven con un alto nivel de estrés emocional y el rechazo social de sus compañeros. El programa “Teatro del Oprimido” da evidencia de que todos han adquirido no solo un sentido de pertinencia y de autoestima aumentada, sino también habilidades de pensamiento analítico y crítico, de resiliencia, y de inteligencia emocional – componentes que les ayudarán a navegar los desafíos de la vida.

ounded in 2004 by Alice Lee So Fong and Greg Schwendinger, CasaSito is a non-profit organization that increases educational opportunities in Guatemala so that indigenous people living in poverty can attend school, receive quality instruction, and obtain the skills they need to improve their lives.

CasaSito’s comprehensive scholarship program offers financial assistance to students at the middle school, high school, and university levels. In addition to financial assistance, CasaSito provides a wide array of services and programs that contribute to the personal and academic development of the scholar.

One such program is “Theater of the Oppressed,” an educational and therapeutic tool in which participants create a play based on their real-life experiences. This year’s performance was particularly powerful because the play was about ethnic discrimination against indigenous Guatemalan people. Caites (Sandals) tells the story of two young women – one indigenous and one ladina – who overcome prejudice and become friends. They face contempt from their parents, teachers, and peers who claim that the young ladina is lowering her social status.

Through the “Theater of the Oppressed” program, these young people have learned to defend their rights. One of them said, “I have had this done to me, but… no I didn’t defend myself. But now after the theater, yes!” He broke through the culture of silence and has become an agent of change.

This is just one example of the transformational work that CasaSito has done in the lives of 11 low- to extremely-low-income young Guatemalans. These 15- to 18-year-olds have experienced few educational and growth opportunities, and many of them live with high emotional stress and social rejection from peers. The “Theater of the Oppressed” program gives evidence that all of them have not only gained a sense of pertinence and increased self-esteem, but also analytical and critical thinking skills, resilience skills, and emotional intelligence – components that will help them navigate life’s challenges.

El Encanto de la Guirnalda Púrpura

A

unque en Guatemala son popularmente conocidas como “Nazarenos” o “guirnaldas moradas”, el nombre científico de esta hermosa planta es Petrea volubilis y es originaria de América Central (aunque también se incluye a México en esta lista) y las Indias Occidentales. Pertenece al género de las escaladoras, árboles y arbustos, y gusta del clima templado a caluroso de las zonas tropicales donde pueda recibir suficiente sol.

Esta preciosa planta tiene racimos de delicadas flores en forma de estrella (conocidas como brácteas) que cambiarán de color conforme pasa el tiempo. Las brácteas (cálices de sépalos modificados para que la flor real esté protegida) que se ubican en el medio del racimo cambiarán más rápidamente a un tono lila, mientras aquellas más cercanas a la planta permanecerán de color verde por más tiempo (aunque ciertamente también llegarán a ser de color púrpura).

Aquellas que se encuentran al final del racimo serán aquellas cuyo color púrpura llegue rápidamente y serán aquellas de las cuales brotarán pequeñas flores de textura afelpada y que durarán únicamente un par de días. Una vez que haya pasado el período de floración, todas las brácteas se tornarán grises y finalmente caerán de la planta. Las hojas de la planta – particularmente ásperas – han logrado que en algunos lugares se les conozca como “la vid de lija”.

En La Antigua, es usual que durante la época más calurosa – en la que usualmente se celebra la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa – se pueda apreciar la floración de esta planta, por lo que se le asocia a las festividades y eventos relacionados a la pasión y muerte de Jesús de Nazaret, refiriéndose a ellas como “Nazarenos”. Aún durante los meses de mayo y junio (usualmente lluviosos) puede apreciarse esta hermosa planta en floración, convirtiéndose en el complemento perfecto de la arquitectura colonial de la ciudad.

The Charm

n English, they’re commonly called “queen’s wreath” or “purple wreath”; in Guatemala they’re also called “purple wreath” (guirnalda morada) as well as “Nazarenos.” The scientific name of this beautiful plant is Petrea volubilis, and it’s native to Central America, southern Mexico, and the West Indies. It belongs to the genus of climbing plants, trees and shrubs, and it prefers tropical areas with temperate to hot weather where it can receive enough sunshine.

This gorgeous plant has clusters of delicate star-shaped flowers (known as bracts) that change color over time. The bracts (which are actually modified calyx sepals so that the real flower is protected) that are located in the middle of the cluster change quickly to a purple tone, while those located closest to the plant remain green longer (though they also eventually become purple). Those at the tip of the cluster turn purple the earliest and it’s from these that small flowers – with a velvety texture and that last for only a few days – spring forth. Once the flowering period has passed, the bracts will all eventually turn gray and finally fall from the plant. Its leaves are particularly rough, so much so that in some places, the plant is known as “sandpaper vine.”

In La Antigua, it’s during the hottest time of the year – coincidentally the period when Lent and Holy Week occur – that this plant flowers, so naturally it has become associated with the festivities and events related to the Passion and death of Jesus of Nazareth, hence the flowers’ local nickname of “Nazarenes” (Nazarenos). Even as late as the months of May and June (which are usually rainy), this beautiful plant is still in bloom, making it the perfect complement to the city’s colonial architecture.
