We’re already in the second month of the year and very close to the eagerly awaited celebrations of Lent and Holy Week. This month, in our La Antigua Calendar – which begins on page 36 – you can find out about many of the activities that start off the Lenten season.

La Antigua: Morada de Felicidad y Alivio La Antigua: Purple with Happiness and Relief “Hay que decirlo claro.

Antigua Guatemala no está en la lista de riesgo para dejar de ser [Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad], pero sí hay problemas que afectan a la ciudad.” – Irina Bokova, Directora General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) Y con eso, mis Fieles Lectores, La Antigua da un suspiro de alivio.

La Sra. Bokova estuvo en Guatemala a mediados de enero para reunirse con el Presidente y la Vicepresidenta y otros funcionarios gubernamentales cuando hizo la declaración.

Podés estar seguro que todos los involucrados con la industria turística del país han dormido mucho más tranquilos desde que escucharon la noticia.

Nuestra querida Ciudad de las Perpetuas Rosas es la puerta por la que se adentran en Guatemala los turistas del mundo. Estoy seguro de que no hay estadísticas sobre el número de turistas que vienen a Guatemala – y más concretamente, a La Antigua – específicamente porque la

ciudad sea Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad, pero me imagino que no son la mayoría.

Lo que sí es importante es que nuestro estatus como Patrimonio de la Humanidad nos mete en un montón de listados – seguramente los has visto en Internet: cosas como Los 13 Lugares Más Increíblemente Hermosos Y Asequibles Que Simplemente Tienes Que Visitar Este Año – y ser una de los destinos destacados en estos listados pone La Antigua en el radar de las personas que están pensando en viajar.

Aquella gente que viaja es un elemento vital para esta ciudad.

Sin turistas – y el dinero que gastan – La Antigua no sería más que un pequeño pueblo provincial. Un muy pintoresco pueblo provincial, sin duda, pero sin la amplia gama de personas, actividades culturales y educativas, y oportunidades para comer, ir de compras, ser voluntario, y más. La industria del turismo en La Antigua es uno de los motores económicos principales de la región; sin turismo – o con una cantidad reducida de turismo – habría muchos menos puestos de trabajo.

Pues, hay buenas noticias por todas partes. Mantendremos nuestro estatus como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad (por ahora, por lo menos) y estamos aquí en la más grande y mejor época del año para La Antigua: la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa. Preparate para una explosión de lo morado.

Preparate para alfombras y procesiones. Preparate para cucuruchos e imágenes e incienso de copal. Preparate para huertos y andas. Preparate para marchas fúnebres, “centuriones romanos” y velaciones.* Y no nos podemos olvidar de la comida. (Ya se me hace agua la boca.)

Pero también debés prepararte para las muchedumbres de turistas que otra vez inundarán a nuestra ciudad. Vienen aquí para ver las actividades de la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa más grandes del mundo.

(Superamos el tamaño de los eventos en Sevilla hace un par de años.) Estos turistas vendrán de todas partes de Guatemala, de Centroamérica y de alrededor del mundo. Vienen a admirar las vistas, los sonidos, las aromas y los sabores de este increíble espectáculo del patrimonio cultural de Guatemala. Y el

– Irina Bokova, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) And with that, my Faithful Readers, La Antigua breathes a sigh of relief.

Ms. Bokova was in Guatemala in midJanuary to meet with the President and Vice President and other governmental officials when she made the statement.

You can be sure that everyone involved with the country’s tourism industry has been sleeping much more soundly since they heard the news. Our beloved City of Perpetual Roses is the doorway through which the world’s tourists enter Guatemala. I’m sure there are no statistics about how many tourists come to Guatemala – and more specifically, to La Antigua – simply because it’s a World Heritage Site, but I imagine that it’s not many. But what is important is that our World Heritage status gets us on a lot of lists – surely you’ve seen them on the Internet: things like The 13 Most Stunningly Beautiful And Affordable Places That You Simply Must Visit This Year – and it’s being on those lists that puts La Antigua on the radar of people who are thinking about traveling.

Those traveling people are this city’s lifeblood. Without tourists – and the

dinero que gastan acá en La Antigua crea puestos de trabajo y oportunidades.

Para nosotros que vivimos en La Antigua (y de hecho, en todo el municipio de Antigua Guatemala), la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa pueden ser – de muchas maneras – un inconveniente, pero no hagas una mueca cuando dices la palabra “turista”; ellos son lo que hace de La Antigua lo que es. Entonces, mi consejo para mis compañeros antigüeños es: sé amable. Sé útil, si se puede. Sé un embajador de buena voluntad para Guatemala y para La Antigua. Nuestra ciudad sí tiene sus problemas, como dijo la Directora General de la UNESCO, pero falta de amabilidad y gentileza de sus habitantes no es uno de ellos.

Hay un montón de cosas de La Antigua que hay que

celebrar. También hay muchos problemas. Pero soy realista. Soy lo suficientemente cínico para pensar que la retención del estatus de Patrimonio de la Humanidad por La Antigua será vista por los poderes fácticos como una señal de que todo está perfectamente maravilloso. (Probablemente no prestarán tanta atención a la última parte de la declaración de la señora Bokova.) En cambio, deberían verlo como una situación donde La Antigua ha esquivado una bala, y deben darse cuenta de que esta es una excelente oportunidad para arreglar las cosas que todo el mundo sabe que se tienen que arreglar.

Sí... soy cínico, pero también soy lo suficientemente optimista para esperar equivocarme al respecto.

money they spend – La Antigua would just be a little backwater pueblo. A very picturesque backwater pueblo, certainly, but without the wide array of people, cultural and educational activities, and opportunities for dining, shopping, volunteering, and more. The tourism industry in La Antigua is one of the area’s primary economic drivers; without tourism – or with a reduced amount of tourism – there would be so many fewer jobs.

So, there’s good news all around. We’re keeping our World Heritage status (for now, at least) and we’re here at the biggest and best time of year for La Antigua: Lent and Holy Week. Prepare yourself for a riot of purple. Prepare yourself for alfombras and procesiones.

Prepare yourself for cucuruchos and imágenes and copal incense.

Prepare yourself for huertos and andas. Prepare yourself for funeral marches, “Roman centurions”, and velaciones.* And you can’t forget about the food. (My mouth’s already watering just thinking about it.)

But also prepare yourself for the throngs of tourists who will once again be descending on our city.

They’re coming here to see the world’s largest Lenten and Holy Week activities. (We surpassed the size of the events in Seville, Spain, a couple of years ago.) These tourists will be coming from all over Guatemala, Central America, and around the world. They’re coming to marvel at the sights, sounds, aromas, and flavors of this amazing spectacle of Guatemala’s cultural heritage. And the money

they spend here in La Antigua creates jobs and opportunities.

For those of us who live in La Antigua (and for that matter, in the whole municipio of Antigua Guatemala), Cuaresma and Semana Santa can be – in many ways – an inconvenience, but make sure that you don’t sneer when you say the word “tourist”; they’re what makes La Antigua what it is. So, my advice to my fellow Antigüeños is: be nice.

Be helpful, if you can. Be an ambassador of goodwill for Guatemala and for La Antigua.

Our city may have its problems, as the UNESCO Director-General said, but a lack of friendliness and openheartedness by its residents isn’t one of them.

There are lots of things to celebrate about La Antigua. There are many problems, as well. But I’m a realist. I’m cynical enough to think that La Antigua’s retaining its World Heritage status will be seen by the city’s powers-that-be as a sign that everything is perfectly wonderful. (They probably won’t pay so much attention to the last part of Ms. Bokova’s statement.)

Instead, they should be seeing it as a situation where La Antigua has dodged a bullet, and they should realize that this is an excellent opportunity to fix the things that everyone knows have to be fixed.

Yeah... I’m cynical, but I’m also enough of an optimist to hope I’m wrong.

H

as notado que los árboles de jacaranda parecen estar volviendo a la vida de nuevo? Algunos de ellos en la Alameda de El Calvario incluso están floreando, con los pétalos caídos dejando una hermosa alfombra natural en el suelo para que los que pasamos por allí podamos disfrutarla.

Las exofilias y los agapantos se ven más frecuentemente en el mercado, y la gente está preguntándose cuándo van a llegar los primeros corozos. Está en el aire la dulce expectativa de una celebración de clase mundial que va a poner de cabeza a la ciudad y a demostrar, una vez más, que los guatemaltecos – y especialmente los antigüeños – son personas de fe.

El 18 de febrero, con la imposición de la ceniza en las frentes de los fieles en el Miércoles de Ceniza, da inicio la Cuaresma y todas las ceremonias que recrean los eventos que llevaron a la crucifixión de Jesús y su posterior resurrección.

Las velaciones (representaciones contando historias o pasajes tomados de la biblia) inician el Miércoles de Ceniza (con una velación en San Felipe de Jesús). Cada viernes hasta el 20 de marzo, una velación se llevará a cabo en una iglesia distinta, y para el Domingo de Resurrección, más de 30 se habrán llevado a cabo en La Antigua y sus aldeas y los municipios aledaños.

La primera procesión (un acto solemne cuya pieza central es una plataforma de madera con imágenes de Jesús y la Virgen María encima) que sea cargada por las calles de La Antigua será la de la iglesia de Santa Catarina Bobadilla, el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma, el 22 de febrero. A partir de ese momento, una procesión se llevará

a cabo cada domingo hasta el Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, el 22 de marzo, cuando una de las procesiones más admiradas – de la iglesia de San Bartolomé Becerra – saldrá a recorrer las calles y avenidas de La Antigua.

ave you noticed that the jacaranda trees are starting to come to life again? A few of them along the Alameda de El Calvario have even begun to bloom, with the fallen blossoms making a beautiful natural rug for us passersby to enjoy.

Exofilias and agapanthus are seen more often in the market, and people are starting to wonder when the first corozos will arrive. It’s in the air, the sweet expectation of a world-class celebration that will turn the city upside down and once again prove that Guatemalans – and especially Antigüeños – are people of faith.

On February 18th, with the anointing of the foreheads of the faithful with ashes during Ash Wednesday, Lent officially begins, and with it come all the ceremonies that recreate the events that led up to the crucifixion of Jesus and his later resurrection.

Holy vigils – known as velaciones – (displays that illustrate stories or passages from the bible) will begin on Ash Wednesday (with one taking place in San Felipe de Jesús). Every Friday through March 20th, a velación will take place at a different church, and by Easter, more than

30 will have taken place in La Antigua and the surrounding aldeas (villages) and municipios (municipalities).

The first procession or procesión (a solemn act whose centerpiece is a large wooden platform, or anda, topped with statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary) to be carried through the streets of La Antigua will be from the church of Santa Catarina Bobadilla, on the first Sunday of Lent, February 22nd. From that point on, a procession will take place every Sunday until the Fifth Sunday of Lent, March 22nd, when one of the most admired processions – from the church of San Bartolomé Becerra – passes through the streets of La Antigua.

Descubriendo Guatemala / Discover Guatemala

L

a idea de subir un volcán, cualquiera que este sea, si nunca lo has hecho anteriormente, es bastante abrumadora. Desde La Antigua, es muy fácil observar el Volcán Acatenango – visualmente junto al de Fuego – y preguntarte cómo sería estar en la cima, observando todo a tu alrededor.

El Volcán Acatenango cuenta con dos cumbres o picos: el “Pico Mayor” (a 3,976 metros sobre el nivel del mar) y el “Yepocapa”, al que también se refiere como “Tres Hermanas” o “Tres Marías” (a 3,880 metros sobre el nivel del mar). Algunos aseguran que la mejor época para subir este volcán es de noviembre a febrero ya que el cielo está más despejado y las vistas son más impresionantes.

Las expectativas son grandes y el cansancio también lo será. Para poder llegar hasta la cima, pasarán cinco horas y media de caminata – al menos – a un paso constante por diversos terrenos que van desde la terracería, la arena y la tierra de los bosques húmedos hasta la piedra volcánica. La salida desde La Antigua debe ser a primera hora de la mañana, cuando todavía no existe la amenaza del sol de mediodía que te debilitará, te cansará y te hará desesperarte un poco (sin mencionar que, aunque exista frío durante el trayecto, el sol igualmente puede quemar tu piel).

Desde La Antigua, tomando una de las dos rutas que existen, pasarás por Jocotenango, Pastores y Parramos hasta la aldea Concepción y seguirás hasta llegar finalmente a la aldea La Soledad desde donde iniciarás el ascenso.

La primera hora de subida te parecerá lo más difícil que hayas hecho en tu vida. El camino está hecho de arena fina, por lo que es muy fácil resbalarse, y estarás en una constante lucha para mantener el paso firme. Aquí debes intentar ir con calma, no extenuarte y no desesperarte,

Acatenango for the First Time

T

he idea of climbing a volcano, whichever one, is quite overwhelming if you’ve never done it before. From La Antigua, it’s very easy to see Volcán Acatenango – located on the skyline next to Volcán de Fuego – and wonder what it would be like at the top, looking down on everything.

Volcán Acatenango has two peaks or summits, the “Pico Mayor” (“Greater Peak”) at 3,976 meters (13,045 feet) above sea level and “Yepocapa” peak – which is sometimes also referred to as the “Three Sisters” or the “Three Marías” – at 3,880 meters (12,730 feet) above sea level. Some say the best time of the year to climb the volcano is from November to February because the skies are clear and the views are breathtaking.

Expectations are high and so will be your level of fatigue. To get to the top, it’s a five-and-a-half hour hike – at least – at a steady pace through various kinds of terrain ranging from gravel, sand, and earthy rainforests to volcanic rock. It’s best to leave La Antigua first thing in the morning when there’s no midday sun to make

you overheat, sap your will, tire you out, and make you despair a little (not to mention that, although there will be some chilly spots during the journey, you can also get a nasty sunburn).

From La Antigua, taking one of the two possible routes, you’ll pass through Jocotenango, Pastores, and Parramos to reach Aldea Concepción and finally on to Aldea La Soledad, where you’ll begin the ascent.

The first hour’s climb will seem like the hardest thing you’ve ever done in your life. The path is fine sand, which makes it very easy to slip, and you’ll constantly struggle to maintain a steady pace. You should try to take it easy – don’t wear yourself out and don’t despair because, during the second hour, you’ll hike through a forest where you’ll probably feel a bit better because the path is firm and the trees will help to keep you cool.

The third hour can be confusing because you will have lost track of time and you won’t know how much longer it will take. During this time, the surrounding landscapes are more visible without the forest’s large trees blocking the view, and you’ll be able

pues pronto, durante la segunda hora, encontrarás un bosque húmedo donde probablemente te sentirás mejor ya que el camino es firme y el clima te ayudará a que no te sientas acalorado.

La tercera hora puede resultar confusa ya que has perdido la noción del tiempo y desconoces cuánto tiempo más falta para poder llegar. Durante este tiempo, el paisaje del lugar está más a la vista, sin los grandes árboles del bosque impidiéndote que puedas apreciar completamente donde te encuentras. Aquí el camino no se siente tan empinado (y no lo es) y te permite descansar un poco para la cuarta hora en la que recorrerás terrenos más áridos y polvorientos.

Es recomendable que durante un descanso puedas hidratarte y comer algo de fruta, preferiblemente algo con potasio, como un banano, o algo que te brinde suficiente energía para poder continuar con la etapa más difícil.

La última etapa, a partir de la quinta hora, inicia con un pequeño bosque y luego da paso al terreno de arena volcánica que te llevará hasta el primer pico del volcán.

Este primer pico es un terreno más parejo donde deberás acampar ya que así evitarás los fuertes vientos y el frío que azotan la cima.

Una vez que hayas acampado, podrás descansar lo suficiente como para poder caminar – temprano por la mañana, más o menos a las 5 AM – iniciar el ascenso hacia la cima. to fully appreciate where you are. Here the route doesn’t feel quite so steep (it isn’t), and it lets you store up some reserves for the fourth hour that’s over mostly dry and dusty terrain.

During a break, you should drink some water and eat some fruit, preferably something with potassium in it, like a banana, or something that will give you enough energy to continue with the most difficult stage.

The last stage, from the beginning of the fifth hour onward, starts with a small forest and then gives way to volcanic sand that will lead you to the volcano’s first peak. This area is a more level ground where you should camp to avoid the cold and the strong winds at the higher summit.

Once you’ve camped overnight, you’ll be rested enough to continue – early in the morning, at about 5 AM – the ascent to the summit. i

Because you’ve had an assigned guide since the beginning of the journey in Aldea La Soledad, he can stay and guard your campsite and supplies, and you’ll have a much lighter load for this final ascent.

• Lighter or matches to start the fire that you’ll need at the campsite.

• Flashlight and extra batteries.

• Sunscreen and lip balm.

• Camera and tripod (to take great pictures).

• At least 3 liters of water.

• Preferably a backpack to carry it all in.

13th Paiz International Festival of Culture

T

his year, La Antigua will miss out on a biannual celebration of art and color – the Paiz Festival of Culture – because the 13th edition of the festivities will take place, not in La Antigua as in the past, but rather in Guatemala City, joining the large number of other events this year that proudly celebrate the city’s designation as the 2015 Ibero-Americano American Cultural Capital.

Each edition of the Paiz Festival has treated Guatemala to presentations, concerts, and other works that enrich and inspire.

Among the Festival’s presentations will be Cinema Theatre, Symbiosis, Tricicle 2, and Rosa Passos, plus a terrific concert by Lila Downs. The Festival will be held from February 7th to 27th, and throughout the year in Guatemala City, there will also be encore presentations of some of the Festival’s cultural events.

sta vez, La Antigua va a extrañar la celebración bienal de arte y color – el Festival de Cultura Paiz – ya que en su 13ª edición no se llevará a cabo en La Antigua, como en el pasado, sino en la Ciudad de Guatemala, en parte aunándose a la gran cantidad de eventos que orgullosamente celebran la designación de la ciudad como Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura 2015.

Cada una de las ediciones del Festival Paiz ha acercado a los guatemaltecos a presentaciones, conciertos y obras que enriquecen e inspiran. Entre las presentaciones de este Festival encontrarás a Teatro Cinema, Simbiosis, Tricicle 2, y Rosa Passos, además de un fenomenal concierto con Lila Downs, y se llevará a cabo del 7 al 27 de febrero. arlotta Boettcher llegó a San Francisco, California, en 1971 como “extranjera” a la cultura norteamericana, a la ciudad en sí y a los tiempos que corrían en aquel entonces. El amor por la ciudad y el deseo de documentar lo que vio fue el resultado de observar, fotografiar y conocer personas.

Algo de lo que más le impresionó fue la habilidad de algunos de los san franciscanos de vivir en público partes de su vida privada.

La vitalidad y la energía de esta libertad se difundían por la ciudad en esa época, dándole un estilo único y particular. Decidió crear imágenes.

Sus fotografías capturan el espíritu de la época y también el esfuerzo universal de los individuos de extraerse de la conformidad opresiva de sus tiempos y sus especies. Algunas de las imágenes parecen ser arrancadas del momento como un vendaje, otras levantadas gentilmente para preservar algo delicadamente efímero.

Esto es San Francisco 70s: Urban Portraits, una muestra de vida y de épocas, y una oportunidad de conservar momentos a través de fotografías.

La exhibición se inaugura en Galería Panza Verde a las 5 PM el miércoles 11 de febrero.

arlotta Boettcher arrived in San Francisco, California, in 1971 as a “foreigner” to US culture, to the city itself, and to the era’s vibe.

Her love for the city and her desire to document what she saw were the result of observing, photographing, and meeting people.

One of the things that most impressed her was the ability of some San Franciscans to live parts of their private lives in public. The vitality and energy of this freedom spread through the city during that period, giving it a unique and particular style. She decided to create images.

Her photographs capture the spirit of the times and also the universal effort of individuals to withdraw from the oppressive conformity of their time and their species. Some of the images seem to be ripped from the moment like a bandage, others gently lifted to preserve something delicately ephemeral.

This is San Francisco 70s: Urban Portraits, a showing of life and times, and an opportunity to preserve moments through photographs. The exhibition opens at Gallería Panza Verde at 5 PM on Wednesday, February 11th.

rnoldo Ramírez Amaya (conocido como El Tecolote) es, sin duda alguna, uno de los grandes pintores, grabadores, escultores y escritores que Guatemala ha visto, en parte debido a que todos los dones para el arte que posee se complementan de forma idónea para poder tanto crear como explicar sus obras.

Con el tema Mujeres, este artista incursiona en el género femenino, sabiendo del peligro que implica caer en la cursilería si no se logra dar el salto lírico hacia la poesía. Sobre sus obras, menciona una cita que hace el poeta brasileño Vinicius de Moraes, de quien Antonio Carlos Jobim musicalizó el poema La chica de Ipanema: “A mí, las feas que me perdonen, pero la belleza es esencial”.

La muestra se presenta en el recién inaugurado Divino Naranjo, ubicado en la 9a Calle Oriente #12 en La Antigua [MAP F6], un lugar que abre sus puertas al arte y que nos invita a conocer – a través de esta exposición – un poco más de El Tecolote.

Holy Vigils Holy vigils are displays of a parish’s imágenes in front of or near the main altar of the church. Usually there is a backdrop and a biblical or allegorical scene is created using an imagen of Jesus, other religious statues, and additional props.

In recent years, many of the more elaborate holy vigils have also employed soundtracks and timed lighting displays to add to the spectacle.

Alfombra Durante las horas anteriores a las procesiones, a lo largo del recorrido, se construyen detalladas y artísticas alfombras, hechas de aserrín o viruta teñida en colores brillantes, junto con pino, flores, e incluso frutas y verduras. Las alfombras son hechas por los residentes a lo largo de la ruta procesional quienes invitan a sus amigos y familiares para que les ayuden en su construcción. Cuando la procesión pasa por encima de una alfombra, queda destruida por los pies de los cucuruchos, dejando nada más que escombros que recogen rápidamente los equipos de limpieza municipal que siguen a la procesión.

Elaborate and artistic “carpets” made of brightly colored sawdust or wood shavings, along with pine needles, flowers, and even fruits and vegetables are constructed along the procession’s route during the hours beforehand. The alfombras are made by residents along the route of the procession who invite friends and family to assist them in the construction. As the procession passes over an alfombra, it is destroyed by the scuffling of the feet of the cucuruchos, leaving nothing but a pile of debris which is quickly cleaned up by the municipal cleaning crews that follow the procesión.

Cucuruchos El anda se lleva sobre los hombros de los cucuruchos, penitentes quienes visten en túnicas de color morado en las procesiones hasta las 3 PM del Viernes Santo, y luego de color negro en las procesiones posteriores. Cada grupo de cucuruchos llevará el anda una distancia específica, conocida como un turno, y luego un nuevo grupo se hará cargo. e sabe que los antiguos gobernantes de la civilización Maya utilizaban piezas de jade como forma de decoración y distinción.

Con la llegada de los españoles a Guatemala y el subsecuente colapso de la civilización Maya por la conquista, la minería y la talla de jade quedó en el olvido.

Fue en 1974 que Mary Lou Ridinger – arqueóloga, antropóloga, exploradora – y su esposo Jay descubrieron una cantera de jade en el Valle de Motagua en Zacapa y comenzaron la lucha por revivir el orgullo y la identidad de los guatemaltecos. A través de la comercialización ética del jade, reestablecieron la industria del jade en Guatemala.

En septiembre de 1987, gracias a Fred Ward – escritor y fotógrafo de National Geographic – y su artículo “Jade, Stone of Heaven” (“Jade, Piedra del Cielo”), finalmente el jade de Guatemala empezó a recibir el reconocimiento que merece, y se inició una nueva era para el jade.

Como parte fundamental de la vida de los Ridinger, el jade les permite revivir un elemento esencial de la historia y cultura de Guatemala que merece ser estimado como un patrimonio importante para el país y su desarrollo.

Con esta visión, Angela Ridinger (su hija) fundó Mayan Treasures, una compañía de diseño de joyas ubicada dentro de Jade Maya que se inspira en diseños mayas para crear piezas únicas, y Andrea Novella (la nieta de los Ridinger) diseña joyas que permiten empoderar a las mujeres a través de la educación y el trabajo.

Jade Maya provee la oportunidad de conocer más acerca del jade a través de los museos que han fundado en El Remate, Quiriguá y Puerto Quetzal y en su fábrica/ tienda en La Antigua, donde los visitantes pueden conocer más de la historia del jade y proceso de talla y elaboración de joyas con éste.

Jade Maya: the experts of the “Stone of Heaven”

I

t is known that the ancient rulers of the Mayan civilization used jade pieces as a form of decoration and distinction, and with the arrival of the Spanish in Guatemala and the subsequent collapse of the Maya civilization because of the conquest, the mining and carving of jade was forgotten.

It was in 1974 that Mary Lou Ridinger – archaeologist, anthropologist, explorer – and her husband Jay discovered a jade quarry in the Motagua Valley in Zacapa and began the struggle to revive Guatemalans’ pride and identity.

Through the ethical marketing of jade, they reestablished the jade industry in Guatemala.

In September 1987, thanks to Fred Ward – writer and photographer for National Geographic – and his article “Jade, Stone of Heaven”, Guatemalan jade finally began to receive the recognition it deserves, and a new era for jade began.

As a fundamental part of the Ridingers’ lives, jade allows them to revive an essential element of Guatemala’s history and culture, an element that deserves to be prized as an important part of both the country’s heritage and its future development.

With this vision, Angela Ridinger (their daughter) founded Mayan Treasures, a jewelry design company located within Maya Jade that uses inspiration from Mayan designs to create unique pieces, and Andrea Novella (the Ridingers’ granddaughter) designs jewelry that helps empower women through education and work.

Jade Maya provides the opportunity to learn more about jade through the museums that the company founded in El Remate, Quiriguá, and Puerto Quetzal and in its factory/shop in La Antigua, where visitors can learn more about the history of jade and the process of sculpting and making jewelry with it.

Guatemalteco e Identidad Aplicados al Diseño

D

esde la época precolombina, el arte textil ha sido utilizado para demostrar identidad.

Diferenciaba a nobles de gobernantes, de guerreros y de la gente común. Los ornamentos de los trajes de cada uno eran distintos y marcaban jerarquías sociales. Según lo expresa la antropóloga Bárbara Knoke de Arathoon, “Como artistas del telar, los Mayas alcanzaron una maestría textil incomparable que plasmaron en prendas de jerarquía, importantes símbolos para distinguir a los estratos de su sociedad”. Por eso, una de las manifestaciones artísticas y simbólicas más singulares de la historia y la cultura guatemalteca es el arte textil.

En el arte textil, el vestido funciona como una “segunda piel” o “piel social”, y se considera a los tejidos como auténticos medios de comunicación. La diversidad de la vestimenta de los Mayas corresponde a su complejidad cultural. Las prendas encierran códigos culturales y estatus socio-políticos. El prestigio se marca con la vestimenta tanto en hombres como en mujeres. Los tejidos personalizan y diferencian a los que los llevan y sirven para saber quién es el portador de la pieza, de dónde viene, su estado civil, su estatus social, entre otros datos. Por ejemplo, según el colorido y longitud de una falda se puede saber a qué comunidad pertenece una mujer; si está soltera, casada o viuda; y la importancia que tiene dentro de su grupo.

Toda esta información que deriva en la herencia cultural de Guatemala influenció la forma en que se decidieron las prácticas de trabajo y diseño en Del Palomar. Trabajando directamente con quienes transmiten el arte – los tejedores – para explicarles las necesidades de la marca y poder escoger diseños y colores que son aptos, Del Palomar apuesta por una decoración e interiorismo basados en el lenguaje artístico y en la identidad guatemalteca y trabaja de la mano de los interioristas y diseñadores, aportando su conocimiento de los textiles adquirido a través de años de experiencia. Del Palomar diseña telas según las necesidades de color, textura, diseño y calidad, y no busca la inspiración en algo ajeno, sino precisamente en la identidad guatemalteca.

Guatemalan Textile Art and Identity Applied to Design

S

ince pre-Columbian times, the art of textiles has been used to mark identity.

It differentiated the nobility from rulers, from warriors, and from ordinary people. The clothing ornamentation was different for each and signaled societal hierarchies. As anthropologist Barbara Knoke de Arathoon stated, “As artists of the loom, the Maya reached unparalleled textile expertise that found expression through a hierarchy of clothing, using important symbols to distinguish the social levels of their society.” This is why one of the most outstanding artistic and symbolic manifestations of Guatemalan history and culture is textile art.

In textile art, clothing functions as a “second skin” or a “social skin,” and textiles are considered to be a genuine means of communication. The diversity of Mayan clothing corresponds to the Mayas’ cultural complexity. Garments contain cultural codes and sociopolitical status. Prestige is signaled through clothing for both men and women.

Textiles personalize and differentiate those who lead and broadcast information to the world about the garment’s wearer, where he

or she comes from, their marital and social status, and other information. For example, according to the color and length of a skirt, it can be discerned what community a woman belongs to; if she is single, married, or widowed; and her importance within her group.

All this information derived from Guatemala’s cultural heritage has influenced Del Palomar’s decisions about designs and work practices. A

ntiguamente, de forma tradicional, cada familia elaboraba su propio comal (pieza hecha con barro cocido, con forma de plato sobre la que usualmente se cocinan las tortillas), sus ollas de barro para preparar la comida y sus bastidores (jarros de barro) para servir las bebidas. Con el pasar del tiempo, la falta de materia prima y la facilidad y comodidad de los utensilios modernos ha llevado a que la práctica cambie y se pierda poco a poco.

La elaboración de un comal toma una considerable cantidad de tiempo; se requiere de mucha paciencia y sobre todo de cuidado para la elaboración de la mezcla con la que se crearán los comales. El barro se muele y se amasa sobre una pieza de piedra, agregándole agua para darle la consistencia deseada. La pieza ya terminada se pule con piedra rústica y luego con una piedra lisa – que sirve de lija para afinar la textura. Se barniza con un colorante natural y se deja un tiempo al sol para después meterla al horno por espacio de una hora.

Las ollas de barro – en las que muchos cocinan frijoles, recados y salsas – son uno de los implementos de barro que gozan de mayor popularidad y que han perdurado a través del tiempo gracias a que dan un sabor especial a la comida.

La mayoría de implementos de barro necesitan de ser “curados” (o sea tapar los poros del barro), y ha sido costumbre hacerlo utilizando grasa animal como barniz y dejando secar le pieza por un par de días, para luego cocer la pieza a fuego lento hasta que termine de desprender residuos.

Existen lugares, como en el Mercado Municipal de La Antigua, donde puedes adquirir piezas de barro “ya curadas” que puedes utilizar para cocinar o sencillamente para servir la comida a la mesa, dándole un toque especial con un elemento de barro.

Flavorful Clay

I

t was the custom, in times past, that each family made its own clay comal (a plate-shaped kind of griddle where tortillas are usually cooked), its own clay pots for preparing food, and its own clay pitchers and cisterns for storing water. But over the years, a lack of raw materials and the ease and convenience of modern implements has led to the disappearance and gradual loss of homemade ceramics.

Making a comal takes a considerable amount of time; it requires much patience and care – especially in the preparation of the clay mixture.

First, the clay is ground, then kneaded on a stone worksurface, with water gradually added to reach the desired consistency. After the piece is formed, it’s polished with a rough stone and then with a fine-grained stone – to smooth the surface texture.

It’s coated with a natural dye and left in the sunshine for a while to dry, then it’s baked in the oven for about an hour.

Clay pots – which many people use to cook beans, recados (stews), and sauces – are one of the most popular types of clay kitchenware, and their use has continued over time thanks to a special flavor that they impart to the food.

Most implements made of clay need to be “cured” (that is, the pores in the clay have to be sealed), and the customary way of doing this is to varnish the piece with animal fat, let it dry for a couple of days, then cook it over low heat until no more residue forms.

A

ntes de la invención de las velas, la iluminación corría a cargo de lámparas de aceite que proveían de luz – y un poco de calor – a las casas. Hasta hoy en día es común encontrar varias de estas lámparas de aceite como decoración en las casas coloniales de La Antigua.

Las velas, además de ser utilizadas como fuente de luz en momentos en que no se cuenta con electricidad, son elementos especiales y significativos que han sido utilizados a través del tiempo como parte del particular estilo que ha predominado en esta ciudad colonial. De igual forma, es posible observar enormes candelabros de hierro forjado y pequeños candelabros de mesa adornados por veladoras artesanales.

El material principal con el que se elaboran las velas y candelas es la cera de parafina que, por su versatilidad, puede tener diversidad de colores e incluso olores. Durante la época colonial, solo existían moldes de hojalata para fabricar las velas, con los que era prácticamente imposible no quemarse al contacto alguna vez. Hoy en día, los materiales con los que se da forma a algunas de las velas permiten evitar quemaduras y crear velas en un sinfín de formas.

En el Mercado Municipal de La Antigua, por ejemplo, existen al menos veinte tiendas o puestos

donde puedes conseguir velas y candelas de diversas formas, tamaños, colores y olores.

Como parte de las tradiciones y costumbres de un país como Guatemala – multiétnico y pluricultural – existen determinados colores de velas que se utilizan para pedir favores a algunos de los santos que se veneran. Comúnmente se utilizan las velas de color azul para cualquier cosa relacionada al trabajo, rojo para el amor, verde para los negocios y el blanco para protección.

Sin duda alguna, las velas tienen un lugar importante en los hogares de los guatemaltecos. Sea cual sea la forma en que las utilices, estas herramientas de diseño pueden darle un toque especial a cualquier espacio.

Light and Scent

B

efore the invention of candles, lighting was provided by oil lamps that provided homes not only with light but also with a little heat. Even today, it’s not uncommon to find oil lamps like these being used as decoration in La Antigua’s colonial houses.

Candles, besides being used as a light source at times when the electricity is out, are special and significant elements that have been used over time as part of a particular style in this colonial city. Similarly, one can see huge wroughtiron chandeliers as well as small, table-top candelabras adorned with handmade candles.

The main material that candles are made from is paraffin wax which, because of its versatility, can be tinted with a variety of colors and even infused with different aromas. During the colonial era, there were only tin molds for making candles, and it was virtually impossible not to get burned on them once

in a while. Today, the molds’ modern materials mean that there are virtually no burns, as well as allowing candles to be made in countless shapes and sizes.

In the La Antigua Municipal Market, for example, there are at least twenty small shops or stalls where you can buy candles of various shapes, sizes, colors, and scents. As part of the traditions and customs of a country like Guatemala – multiethnic and multicultural – there are certain colors of candles that are used to ask favors from some of the saints who are venerated.

Commonly, blue candles are used for anything related to work, red ones for love, green ones for business, and white candles are used to ask for protection.

Without a doubt, candles have an important place in Guatemalans’ homes.

However you use them, these décor objects can give that special touch to any space.

na forma de ejercitarte y disfrutar de La Antigua es visitando sus atractivos naturales y el Cerro de la Cruz es un buen lugar para empezar. Llamado originalmente Cerro del Manchén, este cerro es uno de los sitios turísticos de La Antigua por excelencia, y para poder llegar a la cruz y el mirador – que se observa desde algunas de las calles de la ciudad – deberás subir 333 gradas… si, son muchas ¡cuéntalas!

Usualmente, durante la semana, podrás encontrar otros entusiastas del deporte que suben el cerro por las gradas o por el pavimento. Cada uno de ellos podrá asegurarte que el esfuerzo y el tiempo habrán valido la pena cuando estés arriba y te deleites con la vista a La Antigua y algunas aldeas circundantes. great way to exercise and enjoy La Antigua is to visit its natural attractions. A great place to start is Cerro de la Cruz. Originally called Cerro del Manchén, this hill is one of the quintessential tourist spots of La Antigua, and to get to the cross and the overlook – which can been seen from some of the city’s streets – you must climb 333 steps, yes, that many… count them!

Usually, during the week, you can find other fitness enthusiasts climbing the hill using the stairs or going up by waking on the pavement (to the left). Each one will reassure you that the time and effort are worth

it when you’re up there and can enjoy the views of La Antigua and some of the surrounding villages. If you decide you want to see a little bit more, climbing up the natural path and you’ll come to a huge statue of Saint James, the city’s patron saint.

Although the area is generally safe for tourists, those who would like to make the climb accompanied by members of the Tourist Police can call them at 7968-5303. If you go on your own, please remember not to go up after sunset and to stay within the marked paths.

n 1635, un barco español transportando esclavos de Nigeria al Nuevo Mundo se hundió, y sus sobrevivientes africanos se refugiaron en la cercana isla de San Vicente. Aislados del resto del mundo, los ex esclavos comenzaron a casarse con la población indígena local, y con el tiempo una nueva y distinta etnia Afro-Caribe surgió. Los Caribes Negros – como los británicos les llamaban – desarrollaron un lenguaje único, llamado garinagu, o en español garífuna, que mezcla los idiomas arawak y francés con varios idiomas tribales de África Occidental incluyendo el swahili.

A partir de mediados del siglo XVIII, los británicos comenzaron sus intentos de conquistar San Vicente, pero sus incursiones fueron ferozmente repelidas por los Garífunas, quienes tenían el apoyo de Francia. The Garifuna

I

n 1635, a Spanish ship transporting slaves from Nigeria to the New World capsized, and its African survivors took refuge on the nearby island of St. Vincent.

Cut off from the rest of the world, the former slaves began to intermarry with the local indigenous people, and over time a new and distinct Afro-Carib ethnicity emerged. The Black Caribs, as they were referred to by the British, developed a unique language, called Garinagu, or Garífuna in Spanish, that blends Arawak, French, and several tribal West African languages including Swahili.

Starting in the mid-1700s, the British began attempts to conquer St. Vincent, but their incursions were fiercely repelled by the Garifuna with support from France.

After finally defeating the Garifuna in 1796, the British rounded up the Black Caribs and sent 2,000 of them to Roatán, the largest of the Honduran Bay Islands. Left to die, many of the Garifuna migrated to mainland Honduras and Nicaragua, where there are still sizable Garifuna communities today. Others left Central America to seek economic opportunities in the United States, where there is a thriving population in New York City. In 1800, a small group of Garifuna slaves was sent from Honduras to Belize to harvest timber. These settlers escaped their bondage and crossed the Bay of Amatique to a small piece of mostly uninhabited coast in Izabal, Guatemala. It was there that they established the town of Livingston in 1806.

Today, a visit to Livingston will make you feel as if you have left Guatemala altogether. Descended from the original group of shipwrecked African slaves, this marooned community of Garifuna people has preserved its unique language and

traditions for centuries. Also called Buga (meaning mouth, for its location on the mouth of the Río Dulce), Livingston is a truly fascinating spot, though some visitors aren’t impressed by its somewhat dilapidated air. During the day, smooth reggae music fills the streets, and women sporting boisterously colorful dresses gossip and sell pan de coco late into the afternoon.

After the sun sets, a strip of rickety seaside bars cranks up the volume, and local youths dance until dawn.

Garifuna culture holds music in high regard, particularly punta, a blend of African and Caribbean beats that you’ll hear nightly during any visit to Livingston.

Performed by a trio of drums, punta is a chaotic, fast-paced rhythm that’s perfect for hip shaking. One of the best places to experience Garifuna music and culture is Café-Bar Ubafu on Calle Principal, a lively place where men and women take to the dance floor each night.

Accessible only by boat, exotic Livingston makes a good base for day trips to the white beaches of Playa Blanca or the waterfalls at Siete Altares. Most visitors stop by before heading through the Río Dulce gorge and stay just long enough to try some tapado, a rich seafood soup of coconut milk, plantains, and shrimp or snapper. But Livingston by itself is worth a few days, especially around the celebrations of the Día del Garífuna on November 26th. On that day, enthusiastic locals dance all night and rise with the sun to reenact the arrival of the first Garifuna people to the shores of Guatemala, a moment when the country’s diverse cultural tapestry was further enriched.

L

a Sierra de los Cuchumatanes (el nombre de la cual se deriva del idioma maya Mam: cuchuj que significa “unir” y matán que significa “con gran fuerza”) es el nombre que recibe la cordillera situada al oeste de Guatemala que se ubica en mayor parte sobre los departamentos de Huehuetenango y El Quiché. Es la sierra no volcánica de mayor elevación de toda Centroamérica.

Su longitud se acerca a los 400 kilómetros de rocas sedimentarias y materiales volcánicos, y sus cumbres alcanzan los 3,837 metros de altitud. La cadena montañosa de los Cuchumatanes se forma con varias sierras alineadas, además de la que lleva el nombre de la cadena. Las otras se llaman: Sierra de Chamá, Sierra de Santa Cruz y las Montañas Mayas. Se cree que esta sucesión de montañas, junto a la cadena de Chuacús, se levantó de los fondos marinos hace aproximadamente 370 millones de años.

El primer punto que usualmente se visita durante el recorrido a la Sierra de los Cuchumatanes es el Mirador Juan Diéguez Olaverri. Este mirador, con espléndidas vistas, fue nombrado en honor al distinguido poeta guatemalteco, y algunos de los versos que lo hicieran famoso están grabados en piedra ahí.

Entre los volcanes que podrás apreciar desde el mirador – y los demás que encontrarás durante tu recorrido – podrás observar el Volcán Santa María (cerca de la ciudad de Quetzaltenango), el Volcán Tajumulco y los Volcanes de Agua, de Fuego y Acatenango.

Además de las impresionantes vistas y espacios abiertos, en la Sierra de los Cuchumatanes se han encontrado más de 50 sitios arqueológicos, y estos hallazgos indican que en la sierra ya habían habitantes alrededor del año 1500 a.C. Si vas a visitar esta hermosa área, en forma de media luna, que abarca Guatemala y una parte de Chiapas en México, se te recomienda llevar ropa abrigada e impermeable, protector solar y una cámara que te permita capturar el esplendor de la belleza natural en esta área.

Close to Heaven: the Cuchumatanes Mountains

T

he Cuchumatanes Mountains (whose name is derived from the the Mayan Mam language: cuchuj which means “to unite” and matán which means “with great force”) is the name of the mountain range in the west of Guatemala that’s located primarily in the departments of Huehuetenango and El Quiché. It’s the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. It’s about 400 kilometers (250 miles) long and is made of sedimentary rock and volcanic materials, and the highest summits reach an altitude of 3,837 meters (12,588 feet). The Cuchumatanes mountain range is formed of several roughly parallel chains of mountains. In addition to the Cuchumatanes themselves, the others are called: the Chama Mountains, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Mayan Mountains. It is believed that this succession of mountains, along with the Chuacús mountain range, rose from the seabed about 370 million years ago.

Overlook. This mirador, with its splendid views, was named in honor of the distinguished Guatemalan poet, and some of the verses for which he is famous are engraved in stone there.

Among the volcanoes that can be seen from the overlook – and the others that you’ll see along your tour – are Volcán Santa María (near the city of Quetzaltenango), Volcán Tajamulco, as well as Volcán de Agua, Volcán de Fuego, and Volcán Acatenango.

In addition to the stunning views and open spaces, there are more than 50 archaeological sites in the Cuchumatanes region, and these indicate that there were inhabitants in the area as far back as the year 1500 B.C.E. It’s suggested that, if you visit this beautiful, crescent-shaped area which covers part of Guatemala and Chiapas in Mexico, you bring warm and waterproof clothing, sunscreen, and a camera so that you can capture the splendor of the area’s natural beauty.

S

i has podido observar algunas piezas de vidrio soplado, de colores vibrantes que se mezclan en armonía en un contradictorio despliegue de elasticidad y firmeza, seguramente no has podido resistir la tentación de adquirir alguna para poder llevarla a casa contigo.

Los productos de vidrio soplado son el resultado de la creación de burbujas en el vidrio fundido a través de inyectar aire dentro de una pieza a través de un tubo de metal, ya sea utilizando una máquina o de forma artesanal (soplando por el extremo opuesto del tubo).

Quetzaltenango, en el altiplano de Guatemala, es reconocido como el departamento en el que se producen la mayor cantidad de productos hechos con vidrio soplado (y de la mejor calidad). Las piezas que se producen han sido reconocidas a nivel internacional, no solo por la belleza de los productos y la delicadeza del trabajo, sino por la versatilidad y facilidad con que se han acoplado a las tendencias y necesidades del diseño internacional.

Copas, vasos, tarros, floreros y una gran cantidad de adornos en colores y combinaciones de colores son creados día a día de forma artesanal, haciendo que cada una de estas piezas sea única y que pueda adaptarse a diseños personalizados.

El trabajo es arduo y conlleva calentar el vidrio y luego ablandarlo, comprimirlo, doblarlo, presionarlo, fundirlo y aplicar una gran cantidad de fuerza que resultará, finalmente, en la pieza que se desea. No es fácil, pero los “sopladores” acumulan casi interminables horas de experiencia hasta que finalmente entienden de qué forma funciona el vidrio y cómo pueden trabajarlo.

Es común que diversos grupos de turistas visiten una u otra de las fábricas de vidrio soplado en el municipio de Cantel, en el departamento de Quetzaltenango. Allí, todos son invitados a observar el proceso por medio del cual hábiles artesanos guatemaltecos logran crear arte a través de un soplo.

f you’ve had the opportunity to see blown-glass pieces, with their vibrant colors that blend harmoniously in a contradictory mix of elasticity and firmness, surely you weren’t able to resist the temptation to buy some and take it home with you.

Blown-glass products are the result of creating bubbles in molten glass by blowing air into it through a metal tube, using either a machine or by mouth (by blowing through the opposite end of the tube).

Quetzaltenango, in the Guatemalan highlands, is recognized as the department where the largest number of blownglass products (and the best quality items) are made. Pieces produced in the area have been internationally recognized, not only for their beauty and for the delicacy of the work, but also for the versatility and ease with which they’ve been integrated with the trends and needs of international design.

Vases, flagons, stemware and other glassware, and many decorative items are created daily by hand in various colors and color combinations, making each of these pieces unique and adaptable to one’s own personal design ideas.

The work is arduous and involves heating the glass and then softening it, compressing it, bending it, flattening it, melting it, and applying a great deal of force, finally resulting in the desired piece.

It’s not easy, but the glassblowers amass almost-endless hours of practice until they finally come to understand how glass behaves and how to work with it.

During production, it’s quite common for groups of tourists to visit one or another of the glassblowing factories in the municipio of Cantel, in the department of Quetzaltenango. There, everyone is invited to observe Guatemalan artisans creating art by – literally – breathing life into it.

a Ciudad de Guatemala será el escenario de una gran cantidad de eventos culturales importantes durante el 2015 en celebración de uno de los honores más importantes otorgados a la ciudad: la ciudad fue nombrada como Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura 2015. Este nombramiento fue dado por la Unión de Ciudades Capitales Iberoamericanas. La Unión es una organización internacional sin fines de lucro que fomenta tanto vínculos y relaciones entre las grandes ciudades como intercambios en diferentes ámbitos.

Este honor es recibido por aquellas ciudades que han fomentado los varios elementos y ámbitos de la cultura. La ciudad honrada con el título de Capital de la Cultura debe proporcionar una agenda cultural bastante amplia durante todo el año designado, en celebración de un hecho histórico importante para la ciudad.

La Ciudad de Guatemala presentó su candidatura en el año 2011, y en el 2012 fue electa por unanimidad como la ciudad que durante el 2015 reciba el galardón de “Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura”. Además del nombramiento, durante el mes de febrero también se llevará a cabo la 13ª edición del Festival Internacional de Cultura Paiz del que te contamos más en la página 30. The City of Art in 2015

G

uatemala City will host a large number of important cultural events throughout 2015 in celebration of one of the most important honors awarded to the city: it was named the 2015 Latin American Capital of Culture. The designation was made by the Union of IberoAmerican Capital Cities. The Union is an international nonprofit organization that promotes links and relationships between major cities as well as exchanges in various fields.

This honor is bestowed on those cities which have promoted the various cultural elements and fields. The city honored with the Cultural Capital title must offer a fairly wide schedule of cultural events throughout the designated year, in celebration of an important milestone for the city.

Guatemala City presented its candidacy in 2011, and in 2012 the city was unanimously awarded the honor of being the “Latin American Capital of Culture” during 2015. To learn more about the events that will be taking place, visit cultura.gt/calendario.

ste mes, otra vez es tiempo para un evento que les encanta a los fanáticos de la botánica y a cualquier amante de la belleza: la exposición anual de la Asociación Guatemalteca de Orquideología (AGO).

Si visitas la exposición de la Asociación este año, de primera mano te sentirás transportado a una selva, y podrás observar grandes islas de plantas que se elevan en el centro y a los lados del salón de exhibición, cada una de ellas pobladas por orquídeas de diversas partes del mundo.

Aunque conozcas algunas o la mayoría, siempre encontrarás, al menos, más de 40 especies nuevas que no has visto antes. El espectáculo es algo comparado solo con su bella naturaleza. De colores hay cientos, menos el negro y el azul. De olores hay casi la misma cantidad, desde aquellos que son agradables al olfato así como a los que solo las moscas y animales que viven de la carroña les agradarían. También podrás observar las muy famosas “miniaturas”: flores de tamaños que llegan a hacerte pensar en quién es el que se ha dedicado a ponerles nombres pues tienes que hacer uso de una lupa para disfrutar de su singular belleza.

No te sorprendas si escuchas a alguien decir, “¡Esta huele a plástico!” Ciertamente es así con algunas de las variedades. Entre los géneros de orquídeas que podrás

encontrar rápidamente debido a su fama están las del género Vanda y las del Cattleya. Tómate un tiempo para admirar la esquina de los híbridos de los Epidendrum terrestres, algunos de los cuales pueden llegar a pesar varios cientos de libras, y que pueden estar al lado de los Cymbidium.

Luego encontrarás a los híbridos intergenéricos que llaman la atención con su singular belleza. Si llevas una cámara contigo, seguramente querrás hacerles una foto. Si hay dos géneros de orquídeas que – aunque no las conozcas por nombre – seguramente has visto muchas veces, son las de los géneros Dendrobium y Phalaenopsis, pues son los más comercializados.

Finalmente, y luego de pasar viendo los Oncidium, las Maxillaria y los muchos géneros de orquídeas terrestres, encontrarás aquellas que los guatemaltecos consideran las reinas de las orquídeas: las Lycaste. Las tonalidades de amarillo, rojo y rosado son demasiadas y hay muchas plantas de estas; sin embargo, entre ellas hay unas pocas que no podrás dejar por un lado: el grupo de las Lycaste virginalis f. alba, la famosa Monja Blanca, flor nacional de Guatemala, declarada así hace 81 años. “Bella”,

“impresionante” y “perfecta” son unos de los adjetivos utilizados por todos y cada uno de los visitantes. El tiempo pasa demasiado rápido cuando te encuentras rodeado de tal belleza, y debido a que exposiciones como esta son pocas al año, esta es una oportunidad que debes aprovechar.

Orchids: Delicate Beauties

La 41ª Exposición Nacional de Orquídeas, organizada por la Asociación Guatemalteca de Orquideología, se llevara a cabo del 5 al 8 de febrero, de 9 AM a 6 PM, en el Salón Social José Mariano Arzú Castillo, en las instalaciones de la Cervecería Centroamericana, 3a Avenida 17-16, Finca El Zapote, Zona 2, Ciudad de Guatemala. El costo de la entrada es Q25 para adultos y Q10 para niños.

The 41st National Orchid Exhibition, organized by the Guatemalan Orchidology Association, will be held from February 5th to 8th, from 9 AM to 6 PM daily, in the José Mariano Arzú Castillo Hall, on the premises of the Cervecería Centroamericana, 3a Avenida 17-16, Finca El Zapote, Zona 2, Guatemala City. The admission fee is Q25 for adult and Q10 for children.

his month, it’s time once again for an event that will fascinate fans of botany and lovers of beauty: the annual exhibition of the Guatemalan Orchidology Association (Asociación Guatemalteca de Orquideología – AGO).

If you visit the Association’s exhibition this year, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to a jungle where you’ll see large islands of plants that rise in the center and along the sides of the exhibition hall, each populated by orchids from around the world. Even if you’re familiar with some or even most of the varieties, you should be able to find at least 40 new species that you will never have seen before. The spectacle can only be compared with nature’s beauty itself.

There are hundreds of colors, with only blue and black missing. There are an equal number of scents as well, from those that are delightful to the nose to those that only flies and animals that live on carrion would find pleasing. You’ll also be able to see the famous “miniatures”: flowers of such tiny size that you’ll wonder who dedicated their time and effort to naming them, because they’re so small that a magnifying glass has to be used to enjoy their unique beauty.

Don’t be surprised if you hear someone say “This smells like plastic!” Indeed some of the varieties do.

Among the different genera of orchids that you can quickly find are those of the genus Vanda as well as the Cattleya. Take some time to admire the area containing the hybrids of the terrestrial Epidendrum genus, some of which can weigh several hundred pounds, and which may be next to those of the Cymbidium genus.

Next, you’ll find the intergeneric hybrids that will capture your attention with their unique beauty. If you bring a camera with you, you’ll definitely want to take a picture of them. If there are orchids which – although you don’t know their names – you’ll have probably seen many times, it’s because they’re the most sold; they’re from the Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis genera.

Finally, after spending time looking at the Oncidium, the Maxillaria, and the many genera of terrestrial orchids, you’ll find those that Guatemalans consider to be the queens of orchids: the Lycaste. There are many with almost uncountable shades of yellow, red and pink; however, among them there are just a few that cannot be forgotten: the group of Lycaste virginalis f. alba, the famous Monja Blanca (“White Nun”), Guatemala’s national flower for the past 81 years. “Beautiful,” “stunning,” and “perfect” are some of the adjectives used by every visitor. Despite being a national symbol, the Monja Blanca is endangered in nature (some say that it’s already extinct in the wild), but thanks to the support of many people, efforts are finally being made to grow the flower in laboratories so that future generations will be able to enjoy it.

Time passes too quickly when you’re surrounded by such beauty, and because there are just a few exhibitions like this each year, this is an opportunity that you should definitely take advantage of.

unque la mayoría de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro se centran en o la ayuda humanitaria de emergencia o la asistencia para el desarrollo, Humanity First (La Humanidad Primero) pretende hacer ambas cosas. Fundada en 1992, esta organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Reino Unido actualmente tiene presencia en 50 países de todo el mundo.

En 2010, Humanity First llegó a Guatemala y durante los últimos cuatro años, se han establecido una gran variedad de programas y proyectos con el objetivo general de reducir el sufrimiento y la pobreza extrema de las familias guatemaltecas.

Quizás uno de sus programas más exitosos es “Gift of Health” (Don de la Salud), a través del cual 20,000 guatemaltecos en el departamento de Sacatepéquez han recibido de forma gratuita tanto consultas médicas como medicamentos.

Además, en Huehuetenango, Chichicastenango y Sacatepéquez, más de 300 guatemaltecos han recuperado su visión a través de misiones de cirugía ocular “Gift of Sight” (Don de la Vista).

Otro programa es “Water for Life” (Agua para la Vida), que ha beneficiado a más de 2,000 guatemaltecos que viven en las áreas más remotas del país y ahora tienen acceso al

agua potable a través de la construcción de pozos.

La Humanidad Primero Guatemala también ofrece becas y formación vocacional a más de 600 estudiantes, permitiéndoles estudiar el inglés o tomar clases de informática en la Academia La Humanidad Primero, ubicada en La Antigua desde 2012.

En el caso de un desastre natural o un conflicto humano, la organización La Humanidad Primero Guatemala está preparada y dispuesta a enviar equipos internacionales de profesionales voluntarios para proveer varios servicios de emergencia – servicios médicos, de vivienda, de seguridad, de agua potable, de alimentación, de asistencia a las víctimas, o cualquier otro apoyo logístico o médico.

El 2015 promete ser un año aún más ocupado con dos nuevos y emocionantes proyectos en San Juan Alotenango: el comienzo de una escuela preescolar y primaria y la apertura de un hospital que

lthough most non-profit organizations focus either on emergency humanitarian relief or on development assistance, Humanity First aims to do both. Founded in 1992, this UK-based non-profit currently has a presence in 50 countries around the world.

In 2010, Humanity First came to Guatemala, and over the past four years, a great variety of programs and projects have been established with the overall goal of reducing suffering and extreme poverty among Guatemalan families.

Perhaps one of its most successful programs is “Gift of Health,” through which 20,000 of Guatemalans in the department of Sacatepéquez have received free medical consultations and medications. In addition, more than 300 Guatemalans in Huehuetenango, Chichicastenango, and Sacatepéquez have regained their vision through “Gift of Sight” eye surgery missions.

Another program is “Water for Life”, which has benefited more than 2,000 Guatemalans who live in the most remote parts of the country and now have access to potable water through the construction of wells.

Humanity First Guatemala also offers vocational training and scholarships to more than 600 students, allowing them to study English or take computer lessons at the Academia La Humanidad Primero, located in La Antigua since 2012.

In the case of a natural disaster or human conflict, Humanity First Guatemala is ready and prepared to send international teams of volunteer professionals to provide emergency medical services, housing, security, potable water, food, assistance to victims, or any other medical or logistics support.

El 2015 promises to be an even busier year with two exciting new projects in San Juan Alotenango: the start of a pre-school/primary school and the opening of a hospital that will offer a range of services, including an outpatient clinic, a laboratory, X-rays, ultrasounds, hospitalization, a maternity ward, an ophthalmology clinic, a dental clinic, and surgeries.

l Día de San Valentín se celebra el 14 de febrero en Guatemala (y muchos otros países en el mundo) con una variedad de actividades para los amigos, amantes y futuras parejas. Es la fecha preferida para muchos de los que están planeando propuestas de matrimonio y declaraciones valientes de amor.

Las tiendas están llenas de corazones, tarjetas y una amplia selección de animales de peluche que esperan en las estanterías listos para ser regalados como una muestra de amor o de amistad. Para aquellos que no saben qué regalar, los chocolates son siempre una buena opción.

El chocolate – en una forma más simple y sin estar en cajas en forma de corazón – ha estado presente en la escena por bastante tiempo. Ya en el siglo XVII, se creía que su textura y color ocultaban una mezcla de pociones y algunos otros aditivos de brujería que pretendían capturar los corazones de la gente.

A pesar de que el chocolate sí puede capturar los corazones de algunos, si el amor es lo que estás buscando, hemos investigado y encontrado – en el Mercado Municipal – una solución para aquellos que sufren por el amor.

En algunas de las tiendas y puestos allí puedes encontrar velas de diferentes tamaños y colores que pueden ser utilizadas como parte de un ritual de magia folclórica para mejorar las posibilidades de atraer a esa persona especial. En esas mismas tiendas, encontrarás polvos “mágicos”. Son envasados en pequeños sobres transparentes con instrucciones paso a paso que te ayudarán con todo tipo de problemas – de amor, trabajo o dinero – y en botellas de plástico con pociones coloridas que te ayudarán con tu vida amorosa.

Todo lo que necesitas hacer es elegir el que tiene una descripción que coincida con tu situación, seguir las instrucciones y, gracias a la mística cultural de este hermoso país, todo se resolverá en un abrir y cerrar de ojos... si crees lo suficiente.

alentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th in Guatemala (and many other countries in the world) with a variety of activities for friends, lovers, and couples-to-be. It’s the preferred date for many who are planning marriage proposals and valiant declarations of love.

Stores are filled with hearts, cards, and a wide selection of stuffed animals that await on the shelves ready to be given as a token of love or friendship. For those who don’t know what to give, chocolates are always a good choice.

Chocolate – in a simpler form and without the heart-shaped boxes – has been around for a while now. As long ago as the 17th century, it was believed that the texture and color of chocolate concealed a mixture of potions and other witchcraft additives that were intended to capture people’s hearts.

At some of the shops and stalls, you can find candles of different sizes and colors that can be used as a part of folk-magic rituals to improve the chances at attracting that special someone. At those same shops, you can find “magic” powders. They’re packaged in small envelopes with clear, step-by-step instructions that will help you with all sorts of problems – love, work and money – and in plastic bottles with colorful potions that will help with your love life.

All you need to do is choose the one with a description that matches your situation, follow the instructions, and thanks to the cultural mysticism of this beautiful country, everything will be resolved in the blink of an eye… if you believe hard enough.
