Listos... ¡Deporte! ¡Bienvenidos al Mes de la Patria, mis Fieles Lectores!

Exactamente a mediados de este mes – el 15 de septiembre – Guatemala celebra su 195º cumpleaños. (¡Las festividades del bicentenario del país llegarán en solo cinco cortos años! ¿Ya has hecho tus planes?) Entre las muchas cosas que hacen que los corazones de los guatemaltecos se aceleren con fervor patriótico – incluyendo el resplandeciente quetzal, la animada música de marimba y el delicioso pepián – se encuentra el estar justificadamente orgullosos del rendimiento de los atletas del país en las competencias internacionales.

A finales de la década de 1940 y principios de los '50, el mundo se dio cuenta de la destreza de Guatemala en el deporte debido a Doroteo Guamuch. Era un corredor de larga distancia y ganador de múltiples carreras internacionales, como el maratón de los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe en Barranquilla, Colombia, en 1946; el medio maratón en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe en 1950 que tuvo lugar acá en Guatemala; y el maratón de los Juegos Panamericanos de 1955 en la Ciudad de México. También participó en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1952 en Helsinki, Finlandia. Sin embargo, en Guatemala se le conoce principalmente por haber ganado el Maratón de Boston en 1952.

Por su victoria en Boston, el gobierno de Guatemala honró a Guamuch al poner su nombre en el estadio más grande del país, el antiguo Estadio de la Revolución.

Puede ser que estés preguntándote “Para alguien que fue tan honrado públicamente por su país, ¿por qué nunca he oído hablar de Doroteo Guamuch? ¿Ni de su estadio?”

Pues, es probable que hayas oído de él; es solo que le conocés como Mateo Flores.

Doroteo Guamuch Flores nació en 1922 en el municipio de Mixco.

De acuerdo con un explicación popular de por qué su nombre fue cambiado a Mateo Flores, en ese período de mayor racismo abierto, su primer apellido se consideró “demasiado étnico” para competir en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de 1946 en Barranquilla, Colombia. Más tarde en la vida, sin embargo, dijo que el cambio de nombre era simplemente debido a un error de un periodista deportivo estadounidense en un reportaje de su victoria en el maratón de Boston. Y por lo tanto, Doroteo Guamuch Flores fue transformado en Mateo Flores. ¿Por qué estoy tocando el tema ahorita? Welcome to El Mes de la Patria, Faithful Readers!

Smack-dab in the middle of the month – September 15th – Guatemala celebrates its 195th birthday. (The country’s bicentennial festivities are coming up in five short years! Have you made plans yet?) Among the many things that set Guatemalans’ hearts aflutter with patriotic fervor – including the resplendent quetzal, lively marimba music, and delicious pepián – one of the things that chapines are justifiably proud of is the performance of the country’s athletes in international competitions.

In the late 1940s and early '50s, the world became aware of Guatemala’s prowess in sport because of Doroteo Guamuch. He was a long-distance runner and winner of multiple international races, including the marathon at the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia; the half marathon at the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games held here in Guatemala; and the marathon at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City. He also participated in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. But in Guatemala, he’s primarily known for winning the 1952 Boston Marathon.

For his victory in Boston, the Guatemalan government even honored Guamuch by putting his name on the country’s largest stadium, the former Estadio de la Revolución. You may be asking yourself, “For someone who was so publicly honored by his country, why have I never heard of Doroteo Guamuch? Or his stadium?” Well, you probably have; it’s just that you know him as Mateo Flores.

Doroteo Guamuch Flores was born in 1922 in the municipio of Mixco. According to one popular explanation of why his name was changed to Mateo Flores, under the period’s more overt racism, his paternal surname (“Guamuch”) was considered “too ethnic” to compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games of 1946 in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Later in life, however, he said that the name change was simply due to an American sportswriter’s error in a report of his marathon win in Boston. And thus, Doroteo Guamuch Flores morphed into Mateo Flores.

Why am I bringing this up now? Partly to remember a great Guatemalan athlete during the month of chapín pride, and partly because Congress weighed in on the naming issue recently. The Guatemalan Congress found that it was “nationally urgent” to rectify the misnaming – as Mateo Flores – of the national stadium, a road, and several schools

de la aprobación de la ley en el Día Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas, y creo que fue lo correcto. Pero me pregunto: ¿dónde está la urgencia nacional para asegurarse de que a ningún guatemalteco le falte comida, agua, ni hogar? ¿Dónde está la urgencia nacional para asegurarse de que todos los niños reciban una educación y cuidado de la salud y que ninguno viva en la pobreza extrema?

Aparte de gestos para sentirse bien que cuestan casi nada, el gobierno está planeando aumentar los impuestos, “porque no hay suficiente recaudación de fondos”, a pesar de las continuas revelaciones de comisiones de investigación internacionales y el Ministerio Público de la corrupción, la malversación, los sobornos, y todo otro tipo de transacciones financieras sucias que siguen absorbiendo los fondos del tesoro de la nación.

While I have absolutely no problem with this action – although it might have been nice if it had been done while Mr. Guamuch Flores was around to appreciate the gesture (he died in 2011 at the age of 89) – I am puzzled by the “national urgency” part. Really? “Urgency”?

The first public structure named in his honor was the stadium, and that was 54 years ago! I appreciate the symbolism of passing the law on International Indigenous People’s Day, and I think that it was the right thing to do. But I wonder: where is the national urgency to make sure that no Guatemalan goes hungry or thirsty or homeless? Where is the national urgency to make sure that all children receive an education and healthcare and that none live in abject poverty?

Apart from feel-good gestures that cost next to nothing, the government is currently planning to raise taxes, “because there aren’t enough funds

coming in”, despite the continuing revelations by international investigative commissions and the Attorney General’s office about the corruption, embezzlement, bribery, kick-backs, and all manner of dirty financial dealings that continue to suck funds from the nation’s treasury.

Renaming bridges, schools, and stadiums is all well and good, but during this Month of National Celebration, real patriotism from the nation’s governmental and business leaders would not just be flags and quetzales and the national anthem; it would be working to improve life for all chapines. Guatemala has many, many things to be proud of – including the nation’s exemplary athletes, both current and former – but the national leadership is not among those things. And I can guarantee that if those leaders were to actually do what’s right, you could fill the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores to overflowing many times over with cheering supporters.

Posdata • Postscript Muchos de los atletas olímpicos de Guatemala parecen estar bien familiarizados con la hora chapina, dejando a sus eventos hasta casi el final de la reciente XXXI Olimpiada en Río de Janeiro - después de la fecha límite de mi columna. Así que estoy metiendo esta posdata a escondidas para actualizar el reportaje de portada de la edición de Qué Pasa del mes pasado.

Desafortunadamente, al equipo del país no le fue tan bien como se esperaba.

Dos de las mejores posibilidades del país para medallas olímpicas se estrellaron por lesiones. El marchista Eric Barrondo – quien ganó la primera medalla olímpica para Guatemala (la de plata en la marcha atlética de 20 km) en los juegos de Londres 2012 – entró en el lugar número 50 en el evento de este año, debido al dolor, y no fue capaz de competir en la marcha de 50 km, como estaba previsto. Kevin Cordón, el genio de bádminton, jugó con una rodilla mala, en última instancia perdiendo, pero terminando con valentía su partido de clasificación a pesar de tener dolores muy evidentes.

Los atletas chapines de más alto rango compitieron en vela, tiro y levantamiento de pesas, pero desafortunadamente ninguno terminó mejor que en el 8º lugar. Many of Guatemala’s Olympic athletes seem to be well acquainted with la hora chapina, leaving their events until almost the very end of the recent XXXI Olympiad in Rio De Janeiro – after my column’s deadline. So I’m sneaking in this postscript to update the cover story of last month’s Qué Pasa.

Unfortunately, the country’s team didn’t fare as well as had been hoped.

Two of the country’s best chances for Olympic medals were dashed by injury. Race walker Eric Barrondo – who won Guatemala’s first Olympic medal (the silver in the 20 km race walk) at the 2012 London games – came in 50th place in this year’s event, due to pain, and he wasn’t able to compete as planned in the 50 km. Kevin Cordón, the country’s badminton whiz, played with a bum knee, ultimately losing but valiantly finishing his qualifying match despite being in obvious pain.

The highest-ranking chapín athletes competed in sailing, shooting and weightlifting, but unfortunately none ended up better than in 8th place.

There will, of course, be another opportunity for Olympic glory in four years at the 2020 Summer games in Tokyo. (Although I would still love to see Guatemala get its act together and compete in the 2018 Winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea – we could all be cheering for chapín skiers and ice skaters and the Guatemalan bobsled, ice hockey, or curling teams.)

a Antigua Guatemala será una vez más la musa de cientos de fotógrafos que llegarán a la ciudad para celebrar junto con los antigüeños el quinto Octubre Fotográfico.

Gracias a que octubre fue declarado como el “Mes de la Fotografía”, La Antigua se viste de gala y será el escenario de varias actividades cada semana que tienen como fin compartir y aprender más de fotografía, además de captar la esencia y magia de este lugar único en el mundo.

El Club Fotográfico de Antigua – miembro del Comité del Octubre Fotográfico – es uno de los colaboradores que se encarga de organizar y apoyar a todos los fotógrafos que quieran participar individual o colectivamente en los eventos.

La ya famosa caminata “World Wide Photowalk de Scott Kelby” que se llevará a cabo el 1 de Octubre (de forma gratuita) es el arranque para este mes de actividades que espera contar con la participación de una gran cantidad de fotógrafos.

nce more, La Antigua Guatemala shall be the muse for the hundreds of photographers who will arrive in town to celebrate the fifth “Octubre Fotográfico” alongside La Antigua natives.

Due to the fact that October has been declared ‘The Month of Photography’, in La Antigua will put its party hat on and provide the stage for several events each week - aimed at sharing and learning more about photography, as well as capturing the magic and the essence of this unique and beautiful setting.

The Club Fotográfico de Antigua – one of the members of the Octubre Fotográfico Committee – shall be in charge of coordinating and supporting all the photographers who wish to take part in the events individually or as part of a group.

The famous ‘World Wide Photowalk’ presented by Scott Kelby – that takes place on the 1st October – will kick off this month of activities in which a large number of photographers are expected to participate.

o celebrate Guatemala´s national Independence Day, throughout the month of September, La Antigua Galería de Arte is featuring Guatemalan artists.

Guatemala is a country that has been marked by its recent and ancient history, and its current challenges and contradictions. Given the intrinsic nature of art as representative of culture and experience, these regional and international artists, have captured and continue to capture the peculiarities of the human condition in this area.

La Antigua Galería invites the public to explore the different artistic expressions, styles and techniques of more than 30 of the Guatemalan artists represented in their collection.

El Mes de las Celebraciones a la Patria SOFÍA LETONA

E

l tiempo de celebrar Guatemala ha llegado. Cada año, casi desde el mes de mayo, podemos escuchar los fines de semana a bandas escolares ensayando cada una de las presentaciones que darán: durante el mes de julio se presentan en las celebraciones de Santiago de los Caballeros – el patrón de La Antigua; y durante el mes de Septiembre cuando se llevan a cabo las festividades relacionadas a la independencia de Guatemala.

La Monja Blanca (Lycaste virginalis alba), una hermosa orquídea que ha sido designada como la flor nacional; la Ceiba – que es el árbol nacional; el quetzal – el ave símbolo de la nación – y la bandera de Guatemala van a estar por todos lados como manualidades en escuelas y colegios – y portados durante los desfiles – además de ser colocados en ventanas, puertas y todo lo que pueda ocurrirse, como muestra de orgullo y patriotismo.

A Month for National Celebrations

he time to celebrate Guatemala has arrived! Each year, starting as early as May, school bands can be heard during the weekends as they rehearse each of the presentations they’ll give: during the month of July as part of the celebrations of Santiago de los Caballeros – the patron Saint of La Antigua; and during September when Guatemala’s Independence Day festivities are held.

The Monja Blanca (Lycaste virginalis alba), a gorgeous orchid that has been designated as the national flower; the Ceiba, the national tree; the quetzal – the national bird – and the flag of Guatemala will be seen everywhere during the month.

All of these symbols will be made as crafts in schools – and carried during parades – in addition to being placed in windows, over doors, and just about anywhere else you can imagine, as a sign of pride and patriotism.

This month you will also see many school bands made up of students who seem to delight in waking up everyone within earshot early in the mornings while repeating the same tune over and over again... and over and over and over again... until the performance can be said to be almost perfect. These enthusiasts will march with and represent their schools in the traditional parades that are held every year.

Este mes, también verás bandas escolares formadas por alumnos que se deleitan en despertarte temprano por la mañana mientras repiten la misma melodía una y otra vez... y otra y otra y otra vez… hasta poder decir que está casi perfecta. Estos entusiastas acompañarán y representarán a sus colegios o escuelas durante los tradicionales desfiles que se celebran cada año.

Aparte de los músicos estudiantiles y las batonistas (que son jovencitas quienes desfilan en bonitos atuendos y hacen malabares con batones y a las que por eso se les llama batonistas) – vas a ver a los abanderados (el orgullo de todas las madres y padres de la ciudad). Estos retoños han estudiado arduamente todo el año para ganar el honor de marchar con la banda y ser reconocidos por sus esfuerzos. Y en muchos

casos, estos homenajeados portan una bandera en el desfile como símbolo de excelencia.

Finalmente, es solo correcto que te demos la advertencia que también estarán presentes en esta celebración los fuegos artificiales – conocidos popularmente como cuetes – pero, para ser honestos, están presentes en todas y cada una de las celebraciones en Guatemala, usualmente muy temprano por la mañana, al caer la tarde y en la noche.

Los fuegos artificiales son ruidosos, emocionantes, y a veces casi de infarto, pero es la manera chapina de celebrar.

Vive junto con los chapines esta fiesta de color y bulla que emociona, divierte y entretiene a cada uno de los que tiene el gusto de haber nacido en Guatemala – el hermoso País de la Eterna Primavera.

Besides the student musicians and the batonistas (girls who march in beautiful costumes and twirl batons and thus are named batonistas), you will probably see some abanderados (literally, those who are “be-flagged”) who are the pride and joy of the city’s parents. These youngsters have studied hard all year to earn the honor of marching with the band and being recognized for their efforts. And in many cases, these honorees actually do carry a flag in the parade as a symbol of excellence.

Finally, it’s only right that we give you fair warning: the Independence celebrations will include fireworks – primarily firecrackers (known as cuetes) – but to be honest, fireworks are part of each and every celebration in Guatemala, usually early in the morning, around sunset, and late at night. The fireworks are loud, exciting, and sometimes almost heart-stopping, but it’s the chapín way to celebrate.

Along with Guatemalans, be sure to enjoy this feast of color and noise that excites, amuses, and entertains those who are proud to have been born in Guatemala – this beautiful Land of Eternal Springtime.

Enfocándose mayormente en jóvenes de situaciones

desfavorecidas y de comunidades marginadas, los programas de SERES activan y empoderan a ellos para que tomen acción sobre los asuntos que más impactan a ellos y a sus comunidades.

SERES fue uno de tres recipientes del premio UNESCOJapón para la Educación en el Desarrollo Sostenible – para programas que empoderan a jóvenes para tomar acciones y crear estilos de vida más sostenibles a través de acción individual y colectiva y compromiso.

Las capacitaciones de SERES consisten en una serie de módulos de varios días, usando un modelo que dirige a los capacitados a mayores cursos de capacitación y oportunidades para el desarrollo de liderazgo. La organización ha capacitado a más de 2,500 líderes jóvenes entre las edades de 13 y 26 años en más de 465 comunidades de El Salvador y Guatemala. Focusing primarily on youth from underprivileged and marginalized communities, their programs help to awaken, activate and empower young people to take action on those issues that most impact them and their communities.

Development, for programs that empower youth to take action to create more sustainable lifestyles through individual and collective activities and effort.

SERES trainings consist of a series of multi-day modules, using a funnel model that channels trainees to further training and leadership development opportunities. Durante nuestra visita por la finca San Jerónimo Miramar en Patulul, donde se producen todos los productos de Parma, pudimos comprobar que justamente son estas cualidades las que le distinguen.

During our visit to the San Jerónimo Miramar Finca in Patulul, where all Parma’s products are produced, we were able to confirm with our own eyes what it is that makes this place truly special.

In this beautiful setting – surrounded by incredible scenery and under the shadow of an imposing volcano – the products recognized as part of the ‘Parma tradition’ are produced.

Although the story really begins in Italy, it is on this farm in Guatemala where the dreams and huge vision of the Parma team are sheltered – a team made up of all those who have loved, cared for and respected this land for generations and together form a huge family.

In San Jerónimo Miramar, apart from cultivating the earth and caring for the livestock, support is provided to local farmers and dairy farmers to help them to cultivate produce that is not only tasty, but healthy too.

De Atmulunga o Bulbuxyá a Panchoy, Pancan o El Tuerto Estuardo Burmester

L

a mañana del 29 de septiembre de 1541, el repique de campanas de la Concepción anunciaba el regreso de los exploradores y la apertura del cabildo, el cual se había anunciado. La multitud presurosa se amontonaba en la puerta del convento franciscano, mostrando su inquietud por conocer el resultado de las exploraciones realizadas.

Según los informes; el Valle del Tianquesillo (Chimaltenango) parecía ser el lugar ideal. El informe relataba que este poseía extensas llanuras, agua en abundancia con vegetación pequeña en donde podía establecerse una ciudad.

Solo le faltaban bosques cercanos para obtener madera para construcción. El Ayuntamiento no dictó ningún acuerdo definitivo debido a que no hubo consenso en la población.

Algunos votaban aún por la reconstrucción de la ciudad en Atmulunga, donde había sido fundada la Ciudad de Santiago, bajo la advocación de Santa Cecilia, el 22 de noviembre de 1527, hacia poco menos de catorce años.

Finalmente, Tianquesillo adquirió el mayor número de sufragios y acordó que el traslado se llevaría a cabo el 11 de octubre del mismo año; no sin antes hacer las advertencias hechas por los exploradores.

En los siguientes días corrió el rumor dentro de la población sobre la llegada de un emisario de Su Majestad El Rey, don Carlos V. Se decía que este ya estaba en pláticas con los gobernadores y los miembros del cabildo – él moraba en la vivienda de uno de ellos.

Su misteriosa presencia, causaba revuelo dentro de los vecinos que ansiosos deseaban conocer la causa de su inesperada visita. Víctimas de las presiones de los habitantes y aprovechando que el cabildo estaba reunido, el ayuntamiento y los gobernadores, se vieron en la necesidad y en la obligación de presentar al enviado de Su Majestad, diciendo: “Vuestras Señorías y hermanos míos en Cristo. Tengo el placer de presentar al enviado de Su Majestad, el Ingeniero Real, Ilustre don Juan Bautista Antonelli; hemos venido escuchando sus muy sabios consejos en lo que respecta al traslado de nuestra capital.”

Sin hesitar, los presentes acordaron celebrar un nuevo cabildo abierto, para escuchar los informes y proyectos del distinguido Ingeniero Real. La mañana del 22 de octubre de 1541, el cabildo extraordinario se llevó a cabo para conocer el informe del Ingeniero Juan Bautista Antonelli.

n the morning of the 29th September, 1541, the bells of the Concepcion church were clanging to announce the return of the explorers and the opening of the Town Hall.

The excited crowds were gathering in the doorway of the old Franciscan convent, anxious to hear what stories were to be told by the explorers.

According to the reports, the Valle del Tianquesillo (Chimaltenango) seemed to be the ideal spot. The report told of its wide open spaces, abundant water and low-lying vegetation – a perfect place to establish a city. The only thing missing was a forest nearby from which to obtain wood for construction.

The town council didn’t come to a definitive decision due to a lack of consensus amongst the townspeople.

Some still voted in favor of the reconstruction of Atmulunga – where

the city of Ciudad de Santiago had previously been founded 14 years ago – on the 22nd of November, 1527 - in the name of Santa Cecilia.

In the end, Tianquesillo recieved the most number of votes and it was decided that the population would make the move on the 11th of October that same year, whilst taking into account the warnings made by the explorers.

During the following days a rumor spread amongst the population about the imminent arrival of His Majesty Carlos V. It was said that this was already under discussion amongst the governors and the members of the town council – supposedly he was residing in the house of one of them.

His mysterious presence was causing a commotion amongst the populace, who were anxious to find out the reason for his unexpected

visit. Under pressure from the citizens and taking advantage of the fact that the town council was already assembled, the governors felt obliged to introduce His Majesty’s envoy… with the following words: ‘’Honorable Ladies and Gentlemen and my brothers and sisters in Christ…I have the pleasure of introducing His Majesty’s envoy, the Royal Engineer, the illustrious Sir Juan Bautista Antonelli. We have been hearing his very wise words of advice on the topic of the relocation of our capital city.’’

Without hesitation, the attendees agreed to hold an open session of the town council to hear the reports and projects proposed by the distinguished Royal Engineer. On the morning of October 22nd, 1541, the Engineer, Juan Bautista Antonelli was heard.

Con lenguaje florido, expresándose con acento algo extraño pero con el ánimo de no conducir a la comunidad a peligros y riesgos de ninguna índole y para asegurarles un ambiente bello, prosiguió diciendo: “Algunos de vosotros habéis elegido los llanos del Tianquesillo para erigir vuestra nueva ciudad; más no os lo aconsejo” – expresó, y adujo entonces: “El agua que recorre el valle, aunque abundante ahora; es caliza y será insuficiente para futuro. Los montes, único punto donde podríais encontrar madera para construcción, están distantes…”

Antonelli prosiguió dando innumerables razones lógicas, para hacer ver que el Valle del Tianquesillo no era el adecuado para el traslado de la ciudad. “¿Qué aconseja entonces, vuestra señoría?” – preguntó un vecino. “¡Creedme, vengo deslumbrado! Vengo de aquí cerca, del valle que esta a vuestro lado norte. Algunos le llaman del “Tuerto”, otros lo conocen como “Panchoy o Pancán” Está siempre de color amarillo a causa del Cempoalli que florece en grandes extensiones. Desde el valle, embeleso de Dios, se divisan el Hunahpú, el Chigag y el Caíabana-Juyú (Volcanes de Agua, Fuego y Acatenango respectivamente). El fértil valle de Panchoy, del que los naturales dicen fue un lago (y de donde viene su nombre “Laguna Grande” o “en la Laguna”) es tan magnífico, como debe ser el paraíso, sin accidentes y con muy poca inclinación.”

“Sobresalen en el entorno del valle las montañas que le rodean, en su margen derecha se levanta una gigantesca pirámide escalena a la cual los nativos le dicen “Sakiljuyú”( Cerro de la luz), pues el sol sale detrás y también algunas noches, la hermosa luna se alza de sus espaldas. Frente a éste, al occidente del valle, otro alto cerro denominado “Kabijel k´i juyú” (Cerro por donde cae el sol) lo bordea.

Antonelli continued to give any number of logical reasons for why the Valle de Tianquesillo was not right for the relocation of the city. ‘’What do you advise then, Sir?’’ – asked a neighbor. ‘’Believe me! I’ve just been blown away! I’ve just come from a valley near here…a valley that’s to your north. Some call it ‘Tuerto’, whereas others know it as ‘Panchoy’ or ‘Pancan’. It always appears yellow in color, due to the huge swathes of Cempoalli that flourish there. From this valley – blessed by God – you can see Hunahpu, Chigag and Caiabana-Juyu (the volcanoes Agua, Fuego and Acatenango respectively). It is as magnificent as paradise should be, with no pitfalls and a very slight slope.’’ ‘’The mountains that circle the valley stand out against its landscape – at the far right of the valley rises a huge pyramid that the native people call ‘Sakiljuyu’ (the Mountain of Light); due to the fact that the sun rises from behind it and some nights you can see a beautiful moon rising from its shoulders. Opposite this – towards the western side – another huge mountain known as ‘Kabijel k’ijuyu’ (the Mountain where the Sun Sets) marks the edge of the Valley’’. + en/on Pg 42

Continuó diciendo: “Al lado Oriente, esplendido y basto, esta el cerro “Mulac” ó “Ajkal” (que en español le llamamos Cucurucho, aunque en kakchikel le llaman Cerro Guerrero). Al más pequeño de los cerros los indios le llaman “Juyúkulá” (Garganta). También dijo: “El río que atraviesa el valle lo hace; perezoso, reflexivo, vacilante, gracioso; como si deseara detenerse en cualquier parte de su curso a enamorar el paisaje. ¿Será acaso que por eso los aborígenes le llaman Ch`Obnekyá, que significa “Río que Piensa” Continuaron hasta tarde, con cada descripción del Valle de Panchoy, los rostros de los presentes se iluminaban cargados de esperanza, Dios los compensaba ahora con esto, luego del sufrimiento de las postrísimas semanas. Nada impediría que aprovecharan ahora, ese valle esplendido para construir el Nuevo Santiago.

Es así, como el 22 de octubre de 1541, el ayuntamiento y los gobernadores, derogaron el auto del 2 de octubre, por el cual se había acordado el traslado al Valle del Tianques de Chimaltenango; disponiéndose que el traslado se hiciera al del Tuerto, Panchoy o Pancán.

Don Francisco de la Cueva y el Obispo Francisco Marroquín tomaron las riendas del gobierno y junto con el Noble Ayuntamiento, ordenaron el traslado de la Ciudad de Santiago al Valle de Panchoy, con el mismo nombre, fueros, distinciones y privilegios; de las cuales el cronista deja constancia.

La mañana del 10 de marzo de 1543, entre cohetillos, fanfarrias, música, canto, gritos de júbilo y algarabía, plegarias y ruegos se manifestaron.

El ayuntamiento de la Ciudad de Santiago, celebraba su primer cabildo, en la nueva ciudad, siendo alcaldes: don Sancho de Barahona y don Santos Figueroa, síndico procurador don Alonso Pérez y el secretario del cabildo don Diego Hernández. Dio inicio así la vida de esta cuatricentenaria e histórica ciudad, hoy conocida por todos como La Antigua Guatemala.

He continued: ‘’Towards the East is the splendid, rugged, Cerro ‘Mulac’ or ‘Ajkal’ (that we name ‘cuchurucho’ in Spanish, although in Kacquikel it is called Cerro Guerrero).

The native people have given the name ‘Juyukula’ (Throat) to the smallest of the mountains’’. He added: ‘’The river that spans the valley – lazy, reflective, tentative, amusing – meanders along as if it wanted to stop somewhere along its course to enchant the landscape. Perhaps this is why the locals call it ‘Ch-Obnekya’ (The River that Thinks)’’.

The meeting continued on until late. With each description of the Valle del Panchoy the faces of the attendees lit up with increasing hope – they felt that God was compensating them for the previous weeks of suffering and hardship. Nothing would stop them now from taking advantage of this magnificent new valley to construct the new city of Santiago.

So…just like that…on the 22nd October 1541 the town council and the governors changed their mind about the proposed relocation to the Valle del Tianquesillo, Chimaltenango; and instead decided to move to the valley known as Tuerto, Panchoy or Pancan.

Francisco de la Cueva and the bishop Francisco Marroquin took the reins of the Government and – together with the town council – ordered the relocation of the Ciudad de Santiago to the Valle de Panchoy, with the same name, jurisdiction, hierarchy and privileges…of which the chronicler leaves a written record.

On the morning of the 10th March 1543, the town celebrated with fireworks, music, song, jubilant shouts, hubbub and prayers.

The Town Council of the Ciudad de Santiago held their first meeting in the new city as mayors: Sancho de Barahona, Santos Figueroa, Alonso Perez (named as town prosecutor) and Diego Hernandez (named secretary of the council). And, so…this is how the 400-year-old, historic city now known as Antigua Guatemala started its life.

La Catedral Metropolitana

L

a Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Guatemala – que se localiza en la Zona 1 a un costado de la Plaza de la Constitución (que es conocida popularmente como “Parque Central”) – es una de las joyas del Centro Histórico de la ciudad capital.

Documentos de la época cuentan que el espacio donde fue construida la catedral fue reservado por órdenes de Marco Ibáñez, el Arquitecto Principal de la ciudad, especificando que se necesitarían “dos manzanas sin calles de por medio al oriente de la Plaza Central”. Su construcción en el Valle de la Ermita fue inaugurada por el Arzobispo Cayetano Francos y Monroy en el año 1782.

La Catedral tiene 100 varas de longitud, 46 de latitud y 22 de altura en la nave mayor (aproximadamente 84 metros por 39 metros y 18.5 metros de altura) y cuenta con 88 ventanas y siete enormes puertas. Su fachada fue finalmente concluida en 1867, y en 1871 fue colocada la campana mayor de San José (comúnmente conocida como “La Chepona”) – cuyo peso es de 5 mil libras – fundida por Emilio Vassaux.

El coro (en el que se hicieron incrustaciones de concha nácar y otras decoraciones) se encuentra en la cabecera de la nave central. he Metropolitan Cathedral of Guatemala City – located in Zone 1 next to the Plaza de la Constitución (which is popularly known as “Parque Central”) – is one of the jewels of the capital city's Historic City Center.

Documents of the period say that the space where the cathedral was constructed was reserved on the orders of Marco Ibáñez, the Chief Architect of the city, which specified that “two blocks without streets running through the middle, to the east of the Central Plaza” would be needed. The groundbreaking for the cathedral's construction was presided over by Archbishop Cayetano Francos y Monroy in 1782.

The Cathedral's nave is approximately 84 meters long by 39 meters wide and 18.5 meters tall (about 275 feet long, 128 feet wide, and 72 feet tall), and it has 88 windows and seven huge doors. Its façade was finally completed in 1867, and in 1871 the great bell of San José (commonly known as “La Chepona”) – which weighs 5000 pounds and was forged by Emilio Vassaux – was placed.

The choir loft (which is adorned with mother-of-pearl inlays and other decorations) is at the head of the central nave. The main altar – made of marble – was once located under the cathedral's elliptical dome, but it was destroyed when the dome collapsed during the earthquakes of 1917 and 1918. + en/on Pg 46

l biotopo Mario Dary, conocido como "El biotopo del Quetzal" es un parque ecológico que fue creado por iniciativa de Mario Dary Rivera y fue fundado en el año de 1976. Se localiza entre los municipios de Purulhá y Salamá, en la montaña Quisis y el Centro Carpintero en Baja Verapaz, a 160kms del centro de la Ciudad de Guatemala. Su objetivo fundamental es la protección y conservación del quetzal y su hábitat – el bosque nuboso.

A lo largo del camino podrás observar diversos paisajes, algunos con zonas urbanizadas al estilo antiguo, desérticas hasta llegar la zona que denominan "el corredor biológico del bosque nuboso", donde el cambio de clima se hace notar de inmediato y la humedad – manifiesta en neblina, nubes cargadas de agua y leves lloviznas – se hace presente. Su altitud oscila entre los 1,500 y los 2,300 metros sobre el nivel del mar y la temperatura promedio anual es de 16 grados centígrados. Entre octubre y enero se desarrolla en el área una llovizna densa y constante, denominada regionalmente chipi-chipi.

Tu recorrido inicia con un pequeño vivero de orquídeas, donde aprecias su extensa variedad y colorido; aunque podrás observar únicamente 70 especies de orquídeas de las miles que existen en Guatemala, hay una pequeña gama de ellas que están en peligro de extinción.

Luego, podrás elegir entre dos opciones, la ruta corta (a la que se le llama la ruta de "Los Helechos" y que consiste en aproximadamente 2km) ó una ruta larga (a la que llaman “Los Musgos”, con un recorrido de aproximadamente 4km).

he Mario Dary biotope, better known as "The Biotope of the Quetzal" is an ecological park which was created on Mario Dary Rivera’s initiative and finally founded in 1976. It is located between the municipalities of Purulhá and Salamá, on the Quisis mountain and the Centro Carpintero in Baja Verapaz, at about 160kms from downtown Guatemala City. Its main objective is the protection and conservation of the quetzal and its habitat— the cloud forest.

Over the course of the journey to get there, you can catch a glimpse of a diversity of landscapes: from oldstyle urban environments to dry, desert-like landscapes and finally the area that is known as the "Cloud Forest Biological Corridor", where the change in climate is immediately noticeable and the humidity hits you in the form of fog, rain-soaked clouds and drizzle. Its altitude

ranges between 1,500 and 2,300 meters above sea level and the average annual temperature is 16 degrees centigrade. Between October and January, the place is covered with a dense and constant drizzle known as chipichipi.

Your trip around this natural reserve will start in a small orchid greenhouse, where you can appreciate the variety and color of these beautiful plants. Although it houses only 70 of the thousands of orchid species that exist in Guatemala, some of them are in danger of extinction.

You can then choose between two routes: the short route (known as the ‘Path of the Ferns’ – around 2km long), and the longer route (known as the ‘Path of the Mosses’ – around 4km long). These are well-walked stone paths that provide a safe and easy surface to walk on; and whichever route you choose will surely prove to be fun and pleasant.

Aunque el agua es extremadamente fría, un cartel informativo te indica que ésta ayuda a la circulación de la sangre y a tener una mejor piel. No es extraño ver a turistas nacionales y extranjeros zambullirse al finalizar cualquiera de sus recorridos.

Hay un espacio dedicado a las diferentes especies de insectos y flores propias del área que han sido colocados dentro de diferentes recipientes y vitrinas para que puedan ser expuestas de una mejor manera. Hay también un Quetzal disecado para que aquellos que no tengan la oportunidad de observarlo a lo largo del recorrido, puedan verlo.

Es innegable que muchos llevan a cabo el recorrido especialmente con la idea de ir en búsqueda del quetzal que se encuentra volando entre los majestuosos árboles, y, si tienes suerte, podrás apreciar al ave símbolo de Guatemala volando libremente.

Along whichever path you wander you will be able to see a large variety of branching ferns (they are called this as they are the largest of their species and in fact look almost like scaly trees). There are over 50 species of trees in the Reserve – some of which reach as tall as 40 meters.

You can also find several crystal-clear waterfalls that fall over huge rocks and a type of lagoon where you can swim a little. Although the water is very cold, you can actually see a sign that tells you how it helps generate healthy blood circulation and good skin. It’s not uncommon to see foreign and Guatemalan tourists plunging in for a dip at the end of their walk.

There is also an area dedicated to the different species of insects and flowers native to the region – presented in different containers and glass displays so that you can view them better. You can also see a dissected Quetzal bird; so that if you weren’t able to catch a glimpse of one during your walk you can still take a look.

It’s undeniable that many of the people who visit the reserve do so mostly to catch a glimpse of a quetzal flying majestically amongst the trees and – if you’re lucky – you could indeed catch a look at this emblematic bird of Guatemala in the wild.

H

oy en día la mayoría de personas buscan alternativas para salir del ritmo cotidiano de vida, del estrés, para sentirse mejor y sentir que su cuerpo, su mente y sus emociones están cada vez más en armonía.

Muchas veces esa armonía o equilibrio que buscan se puede encontrar en la práctica del yoga. Yoga viene de la raíz yug (unión, reunir).

El objetivo del practicante de esta técnica es unir la conciencia individual con la conciencia divina.

En cada práctica de yoga se puede fortalecer no solo el cuerpo sino también la voluntad, se puede relajar y calmar la mente, aumentar la energía y elevar el espíritu. Idealmente es bueno combinarlo con otra sabiduría ancestral de la medicina tradicional india, la ayurveda.

Ayur (vida) y veda (conocimiento), así la ayurveda es el conocimiento de la vida.

Al combinar ambos sistemas se logra un equilibrio y armonía a nivel físico, mental y espiritual.

La Ayurveda se divide en tres energías básicas responsables de las respuestas fisiológicas del cuerpo, de la salud y de la enfermedad, llamados doshas o humores biológicos.

owadays, most people are looking for alternative ways to escape from the stress and hectic rhythm of their daily lives; for ways to feel better and to feel that their body, their mind and their emotions are in harmony.

Often, this harmony or balance that people are looking for can be found through the practice of yoga. The word yoga comes from the root yug (which means union or meeting) and the objective of practitioners is to unite the individual consciousness with a divine consciousness.

Each time you practice yoga you are strengthening not just your body, but also your self-control; you can relax and calm the mind, raise your energy and lift your spirit. In an ideal world, it’s best to combine yoga with another form of ancient knowledge found in traditional Indian medicine: Ayurveda. Ayur (life) and veda (knowledge) – ayurveda therefore refers to the knowledge of life.

If you combine these two systems you will achieve balance and harmony on a physical, mental and spiritual plane.

Ayurveda can be broken down into 3 basic energies which are responsible for the body’s physiological state, health and sickness – each called a dosha or biological mood.

Estos doshas son Vata, Pitta y Kapha. Cada persona es diferente y tiene un balance distinto de cada una de estas energías, por lo que cada individuo tiene su propio y especial conjunto de retos y atributos.

El tipo Vata corresponde a los elementos de la tierra que son aire y espacio. Su función en el cuerpo es el movimiento, es por ello que son personas a las que les gusta mucho el ejercicio, las prácticas de yoga fuertes, la actividad rápida.

El tipo Pitta corresponde a los elementos fuego y agua. Posee una constitución media, no es fuerte ni débil.

Su práctica de yoga debe ser moderada disfrutando sus logros del momento sin enfocarse demasiado al futuro.

El tipo Kapha corresponde a los elementos tierra y agua. Su principio básico es la inercia, lo que significa que necesita estímulos para evitar el aburrimiento y la rutina.

Mantienen la unión y no les gustan los cambios.

El ideal de cada persona debería ser tener estas tres energías en equilibrio, siempre predominará una más que otra en cada persona, pero es bueno conocerlo para tener una alimentación adecuada y los niveles de energía óptimos.

These 3 doshas are known specifically as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each individual is different and has a unique balance of each of these energies; in the same way that each individual has their own attributes and stumbling blocks.

Vata corresponds to the air and space elements of the earth. The function of this energy in the body is that of movement – for this reason they are also people who like exercise, energetic yoga practice and fastpaced activities.

Pitta corresponds to the elements of fire and water.

This type of person has a regular constitution – neither strong nor weak. Their yoga practice should be moderate and focused on celebrating the achievement of present goals rather than looking towards the future.

Kapha corresponds to the elements of earth and water. Kapha-type people are robust and move slower.

They often fall into inertia; and need stimuli to avoid boredom and routine.

Ideally, a person will maintain these 3 energies in balance – although one will always be more dominant than the others. However, it is valuable knowledge to have to choose the right food and optimize energy levels.
