Caprichosos

odría parecer presuntuoso decir que cada espacio de La Antigua está lleno de historia; sin embargo, cuando quisimos contarles acerca de un elemento decorativo tan atractivo como son los búcaros – que, aunque populares, no están tan a la vista en toda la ciudad – nos dimos cuenta que para poder hacerlo tendríamos que compartir un poco de cómo, hace un buen tiempo, éstos fueron de significancia en el diario vivir de la época colonial.

Durante esta época, la distribución del agua se asignaba a los dueños de las propiedades en relación directa al tamaño del terreno: una media paja a las casas más pequeñas hasta varias pajas para los dueños de las casas más grandes. (Una paja de agua equivalía a aproximadamente 650 litros de agua cada 24 horas.) Con tal distribución del agua, era muy común que las casas tuvieran fuentes y búcaros que servían tanto de decoración así como para proporcionar un acceso fácil al agua. Para algunos de los espacios más pequeños, donde una fuente no podría caber, se idearon los búcaros.

En su mayoría, los búcaros fueron diseñados por los albañiles que se empleaban, y las formas caprichosas y los diseños originales (ya que no se encontrarán en ningún lugar dos búcaros iguales o parecidos que no estén dentro de la misma propiedad) se deben completamente al ingenio y la creatividad de los albañiles. Si bien muchos de los búcaros parecen toscos, repetitivos o carentes de mucha estética en sus diseños, también tienen la influencia de la arquitectura de la época. Los estilos de aquel período servían de inspiración para aquellos que trabajaban sin dirección buscando complacer los caprichos de su amo, y así poder brindarle un búcaro decorativo y refrescante que le permitiría a su dueño escuchar el correr del agua mientras se disfrutaba de una tarde en la maravillosa ciudad de La Antigua Guatemala.

Whimsical Wall Fountains

I

t might seem presumptuous to say that every nook and cranny of La Antigua is full of history; however, when we decided to tell you about an architecturally decorative element, the búcaro (or wall fountain) – which, while popular, are not quite so visible around the city – we realized that in order to do so, we would need to tell you a little bit about how they were significant in daily life during the colonial era.

During this period, water was distributed to property owners and was allocated based on lot size: the smallest houses received a half-paja of water and the largest homes were allotted up to several pajas. (A paja of water was equivalent to about 650 liters – or about 170 gallons – per

24-hour period.) With such a large amount of water delivered to the colonial homes, it was quite common for households to have fountains and búcaros which both served as decoration as well as provided easy access to water for small household chores. For the smallest spaces, those in which a fountain wouldn’t be able to fit, búcaros were created.

Most of the búcaros were designed by hired masons and other handymen, and the whimsical forms and original designs (there are no two búcaros the same, unless they’re both in the same property) are due to the ingenuity and creativity of these construction workers. While many of the búcaros seem somewhat primitive,

repetitive, or aesthetically lacking in their design, they were influenced by the architecture of their time. The styles of that era served as inspiration to those working without guidance in order to please the whims of their employers and be able to present a búcaro that would be decorative and refreshing and that would allow its owner to hear the trickling of water while enjoying an afternoon in the wonderful city of La Antigua Guatemala.

L

os mundos de la arquitectura y el diseño siempre han estado intrínsecamente ligados: ambos trabajan para poder crear ambientes únicos que se complementen y sean el resultado de una colaboración exitosa que permita aprovechar al máximo los espacios, la luz y las posibilidades.

La Antigua es una de las ciudades más fascinantes que puede encontrarse, no solamente por su historia, sino por la forma en que la arquitectura de la ciudad manifiesta el crecimiento de la misma y la forma en que se va adaptando a los cambios que llegan con el tiempo. Aún cuando el estándar de construcción usual apunta hacia casas de un estilo netamente colonial, son muchas las construcciones que hoy en día representan de forma original y cohesiva el uso de corrientes y tendencias arquitectónicas antiguas y modernas resultantes en un solo concepto. La mezcla entre estructuras de tipo colonial con ambientes que integran la modernidad resulta en un estilo propio: profesional, innovador y trascendental que además es funcional y único… y está en auge.

Con la aparición de nuevas tecnologías y el desarrollo de materiales de construcción que se adecúen a las necesidades inmediatas (y a las de largo plazo) de las edificaciones, y con la incorporación de aquellos materiales que a través del tiempo han demostrado su calidad y duración – muchos de los cuales han estado presentes en el mundo de la construcción desde mediados del siglo XX – se puede lograr construir de forma segura y eficaz estructuras que se benefician de lo mejor de cada una de las técnicas y materiales del mercado.

El constante cambio en los estilos de vida y el surgimiento de las nuevas necesidades conceptuales llevan a un continuo aprendizaje y a la necesidad de experimentación con materiales nuevos provenientes del extranjero que, si bien dan una apariencia moderna, no opacan el estilo colonial que tanto se busca hoy en día. Crear e innovar es la única forma de lograr espacios únicos que conserven lo que tanto nos gusta y a la vez nos presenten con lo mejor que la modernidad tiene para ofrecernos.

Colonial Architecture with a Touch of Modernity

T

he worlds of architecture and design have always been intrinsically linked: both work to create unique environments that complement one another and both are the result of successful collaboration that allows spaces, light, and possibilities to be used to their fullest extent.

La Antigua is one of the most fascinating cities that can be found, not only for its history, but also for the way that its architecture shows both the city’s growth and how it has adapted to changes over time. Even though the usual standards of construction lead to houses built in a distinctly colonial style, there are many buildings today that represent the use of both ancient and modern architectural currents and trends, blended in an original and cohesive manner.

The mixture of colonial structures with modern interior environments results in a unique style: professional, innovative and transcendental, but is one which is also functional and unique ... and this style is on the rise.

With the emergence of new technologies and the development of construction materials that are appropriate for the immediate (and long-term) needs of the buildings, and by incorporating materials which have proven their quality and durability over time – many of which have been used in construction since the mid-20th century – structures that benefit from the best of each of the techniques and materials available can be built safely and efficiently.

Constant changes in lifestyles and the emergence of new conceptual requirements lead to continual learning and the need for experimentation with new materials from abroad which, while giving a modern look, do not overshadow the colonial style that is highly sought-after. The combination of creativity and innovation is the only way to achieve unique spaces that conserve what we love, but that also present us with the best that modernity has to offer. .

s común que, cuando pienses en decorar un espacio – sin importar el tamaño – encuentres un fantástico aliado que te provee de soluciones coloridas y que puede adaptarse a casi cualquier necesidad: las plantas. En Guatemala tenemos la dicha de contar con una gran variedad de especies de plantas decorativas, medicinales, aromáticas y hasta alimenticias que pueden ser parte de tu vida y de ese espacio que quieres crear o renovar.

Una de las formas tradicionales de adquirir plantas y disfrutar de una actividad al aire libre que te llenará de color es visitando un vivero. Allí, además de apreciar la gran variedad de plantas que existen y conocer más acerca de los cuidados necesarios específicos para cada especie, podrás adquirir útiles productos y herramientas para jardinería. No olvides que antes de decidirte por una especie, hay varios aspectos importantes a tomar en cuenta: el espacio en el que vas a colocarla, qué tan bueno seas para darle los cuidados que necesita y el tamaño que pueda alcanzar la planta que has elegido. De

esta forma te asegurarás que la especie que llevas a casa va a llenar tus necesidades decorativas y va a durarte mucho tiempo.

Un buen ejemplo de una colorida opción para aquellos a quienes el cuidado de las plantas no se les facilita – y una de las plantas que seguramente vas a encontrar en distintas partes de La Antigua – son los geranios. Con una amplia gama de colores bastante fuertes, e incluso variando entre la cantidad de flores que tienen y el aroma que emiten, estas lindas plantas son fáciles de mantener gracias a que requieren nada más que estar cerca de la luz y también una temperatura templada que permita que la tierra se conserve generalmente seca. Así como estos, estamos seguros que podrás encontrar muchas plantas que se adecúen al estilo y al presupuesto que tienes en mente para hacer de ese espacio algo único.

requently, when you think of decorating a space – regardless of its size – you can find a great ally that will provide you with colorful solutions for just about any need: plants. Here in Guatemala, we’re fortunate to have a wide variety of species of ornamental, medicinal, aromatic, and even food-providing plants that can be part of your life and of the space that you want to create or renovate.

One of the traditional ways of acquiring plants, as well as enjoying an outdoor activity that will fill you with color, is to visit a nursery. There, besides appreciating the different varieties of plants and learning more about the care needed for each specific species, you can also get useful gardening products and tools. Don’t forget that before deciding on a particular species, there are several important things to consider: the space where you’ll place it, how good you are at giving the plant the care it needs, and the ultimate size that the plant you’ve chosen can grow to. By considering these aspects, you’ll ensure that the species that you take home will both fill your decorating needs and last a long time.

A good example of a colorful option for those who don’t have a green thumb – and one of the plants you can easily find all over La Antigua – is geraniums.

With a wide range of very strong colors, and with different varieties that have more or fewer flowers and even differences in their scents, these beautiful plants are easy to maintain because they require nothing more than to be close to light and to enjoy a warm temperature which keeps their soil generally dry. We’re sure you’ll find many plants – like these – that fit your style and the budget you have in mind for making your space unique.
