Nota de la Editora Durante el mes de agosto siguen las ferias, las celebraciones y las actividades que podrás disfrutar con toda la familia, y en la página 46 te traemos más sobre uno de los municipios cercanos a La Antigua en los que las celebraciones apenas empiezan.

En esta edición de agosto te presentamos todos los increíbles atletas que van a representarnos en los Juegos Olímpicos en Rio en la página 32 y también conocer más de la Asociación Transiciones, y de cómo están contribuyendo a mejorar la vida de muchas personas con discapacidades físicas, incluyendo a aquellos que quieren practicar un deporte desde su silla de ruedas en la página 40.

Te damos idea de cómo volar por los aires en medio de paisajes increíbles y de los mejores lugares para disfrutar vistas fenomenales. En nuestra sección de comida podrás conocer del nuevo menú de Angeline y además de un genial chef que está dando de qué hablar.

Hay tanto que hacer, que es tiempo de disfrutar La Antigua.

During the month of August, the many fairs, celebrations and family-friendly activities continue….and on page 46 we’ve included information on one of the towns near to Antigua in which the fun is just starting.

In this edition of our magazine we’re going to introduce you to the incredible athletes who are going to represent us in the Rio Olympic Games (on page 32), and you can also read more about Asociación Transiciones on page 40 and how they are helping improve the lives of people with physical disabilities, including those who take part in wheelchair sports.

We give you an idea of how to whizz through the air and take in the beautiful scenery around you, as well as the places you have to visit to see spectacular views. In our Food & Drink section you can catch a glimpse into the new menu at Angeline and also meet a great new chef who’s got us all talking.

There’s so much to do…so it’s time to go out and enjoy Antigua!

¿

Quieres ver a guatemaltecos campeones del deporte en acción? Sólo tienes que pasar por la cancha de baloncesto pública en la Colonia Candelaria cualquier viernes por la tarde. El equipo que está arrasando la cancha es parte de la Asociación Transiciones, una organización de personas con discapacidad con sede en esta ciudad colonial. Los actuales campeones de baloncesto nacional sobre sillas de ruedas tienen sus miradas puestas en las próximas eliminatorias de América Central.

Durante la semana de trabajo, los jugadores intercambian sus camisetas por batas de trabajo, cascos de soldadores y guantes. Transiciones opera dos empresas sociales – una imprenta y una fábrica de la silla de ruedas – atendidos por personas con discapacidad como resultado de la violencia armada, la poliomielitis, accidentes de tránsito y otros

accidentes o defectos congénitos como la espina bífida.

Otras actividades incluyen una clínica de prótesis y un aula de educación especial para niños con discapacidades que de otro modo no podrían asistir a la escuela. La organización también es muy activa en la defensa de derechos de las personas con discapacidades y la prevención de la violencia.

Transiciones fue fundada hace casi 20 años por un grupo de jóvenes con discapacidad, todos ellos pacientes ingresados en el hospital Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro en La Antigua (ve un artículo sobre la organización en la edición de Qué Pasa de julio de 2016). Alex Gálvez, paralizado por arma de fuego a los 14 años, es ahora el director ejecutivo de la organización y Hugo Andrino, afectado por la polio, ahora dirige la fábrica silla de ruedas. ...

Asociación Transiciones Want to see Guatemalan sports champions in action?

Just pass by the public basketball court in Colonia Candelaria on any Friday afternoon. The team tearing up the court is part of Asociación Transiciones, a disabled people’s organisation based in this colonial city. The reigning national wheelchair basketball champions have their sights set on the upcoming Central American play-offs.

During the working week, the players swap their jerseys for printers’ aprons, welders’ helmets and gloves.

Transiciones operates two social enterprises – a print shop and a wheelchair factory – staffed by people with mobility impairments resulting from gun violence, polio, motor vehicle crashes or other accidents, or birth defects

such as spina bifida. Other activities include a prosthetics clinic and a special education classroom for children. with disabilities who would otherwise be unable to attend school. The organisation is also active in advocacy for disability rights and violence prevention.

Transiciones was founded nearly 20 years ago by a group of young people with disabilities, all inpatients at the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro hospital in La Antigua (see an article about the organizacion in Que Pasa’s July 2016 edition). ... La fábrica produce sillas de ruedas robustas para las condiciones locales, realizadas por cada usuario en función de su edad, tamaño, situación de vivienda, actividades y capacidad. Esta personalización permite al usuario hacer un uso más productivo y eficiente de su silla de ruedas, mientras minimiza los problemas de salud comunes, como las úlceras por presión y las infecciones del tracto urinario. Las sillas de ruedas se proporcionan a poco o ningún costo para las personas que lo necesitan.

Cada cliente recibe formación para utilizar las sillas de ruedas, consejos

sobre cómo prevenir los problemas de salud y sobre la forma de cuidar y mantener su silla de ruedas. El equipo de producción está formado al 100% por personas con discapacidad.

La mayoría de los guatemaltecos con discapacidad no tienen acceso a dispositivos de asistencia adecuados.

El sistema de salud nacional no proporciona sillas de ruedas, y las disponibles en el mercado abierto son inasequibles (y a menudo de mala calidad), y son difíciles o imposibles de reparar cuando se rompen.

Esto deja a miles de guatemaltecos sin salir de sus casas para trabajar, estudiar, socializar o participar en la sociedad. El aislamiento y la dependencia dañan su salud, acentúa la pobreza en sus hogares e impone una carga para sus familias.

Después de 16 años de operar en un estrecho talleres local de automóviles, Transiciones se muda a una nueva fábrica de silla de ruedas en San Felipe de Jesús, en las afueras de La Antigua. Como la mayoría de las actividades de Transiciones, el nuevo edificio fue posible gracias a las contribuciones de los donantes que apoyan la visión de las personas con discapacidad que viven de forma independiente, productiva y con dignidad. Con apoyo continuo, la organización puede tener un impacto aún mayor en términos de inclusión y empoderamiento de las personas con discapacidad.

... The factory produces robust wheelchairs for local conditions, made for each user according to their age, size, living situation, activities and ability. This personalisation enables the user to make the most productive and efficient use of their chair, while minimising common health problems such as pressure sores and urinary tract infections. The wheelchairs are provided at little or no cost to people in need.

Each client receives training in wheelchair skills, advice on how to prevent health problems, as well as on how to care for and maintain their wheelchair. 100% of the production team are people with disabilities.

Most Guatemalans with mobility impairments do not have access to appropriate assistive devices.

The health system does not provide wheelchairs, and those available on the open market are unaffordable, often of poor quality, and difficult or impossible to repair when they break. This leaves many thousands of Guatemalans unable to leave their homes to work, study, socialize or participate in society. Isolation and dependency damages their health, exacerbates poverty in their households and imposes a burden on their families.

After 16 years of operating in a cramped converted auto workshop, Transiciones has just moved to a new wheelchair factory at San Felipe de Jesus, on the outskirts of La Antigua.

The factory is beautiful as well as functional, deliberately rejecting the dreary institutional designs so often considered “good enough” for buildings occupied by people with disabilities.

Like most of Transiciones’ activities, the new building was made possible by contributions from donors who support the vision of people with disabilities living independently, productively and with dignity. With continued support, the organisation can have an even greater impact in terms of inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities.

l Volcán de Fuego es un imponente estrato volcán ubicado en la frontera de dos departamentos: Sacatepéquez y Chimaltenango. Su ubicación, a un poco más de 15 kilómetros de La Antigua, hace que sea visible casi desde cualquier punto de la ciudad y que lugares como Ciudad Vieja, San Miguel Escobar, Alotenango y San Miguel Dueñas puedan apreciar – casi a diario – las erupciones y retumbos de este inquieto gigante.

Al observarlo junto al Volcán Acatenango en el horizonte, podemos distinguirlo porque es el único que todos los días tiene una fumarola a distintas horas. (A estos dos volcanes, con su combinación de tres picos, juntos se les conoce comúnmente como “La Horqueta”.) En varias ocasiones el nivel de actividad del Volcán de Fuego ha crecido tanto que, debido a las erupciones y al humo y a la ceniza, se han tenido que evacuar pueblos cercanos e incluso

cerrar el Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora que se ubica en la ciudad capital.

Si bien las explosiones de este volcán – que tiene una elevación de 3,763 metros sobre el nivel del mar – son conocidas por ser bastante violentas y han marcado los senderos por los cuales ha descendido, su falda cuenta con una vegetación densa hasta casi los 3,000 metros.

Arriba de esa altura, el volcán está completamente desnudo.

El Volcán de Fuego (que incluso parece con un soplo de humo en el oficial escudo colonial de la ciudad de La Antigua) es uno de los más activos – si no el más activo – volcán en Guatemala. Para aquellos que disfrutan de los retos y las actividades al aire libre acompañadas de adrenalina y vistas espectaculares, el Volcán de Fuego es uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos del país.

olcán de Fuego is a towering stratovolcano located on the border of two departments: Sacatepéquez and Chimaltenango. Its location, just over 15 kilometers (a little more than 9 miles) from La Antigua, makes it visible from almost any point of the city, and places like Ciudad Vieja, San Miguel Escobar, Alotenango, and San Miguel Dueñas can easily appreciate – almost daily – the eruptions and rumblings of this restless giant.

Seeing it on the horizon alongside the double summit of Volcán Acatenango, it’s easy to pick out because it’s the only one that frequently and fairly consistently sports a fumarole. (These two volcanoes, with their combination of three peaks, are commonly known together as “La Horqueta”, or “The Pitchfork.”)

On several occasions Volcán de Fuego’s activity level has increased to such an extent that nearby villages and towns have had to be evacuated due to the eruptions and smoke and ashes, and at times even La Aurora International Airport, located in the capital city, has had to be shut down.

This volcano, with an elevation of 3,763 meters (12,346 feet) above sea level, has experienced explosions that have been known to be quite violent.

Although these eruptions have left their marks on the volcano’s flanks, there’s still dense vegetation covering the sides up to almost 3,000 meters (9,850 feet).

Above that height, the volcano is completely bare.

Volcán de Fuego (which even appears with an accompanying puff of smoke on the official colonial coat of arms of the city of La Antigua) is one of the most active – if not the single most active – volcano in Guatemala.

For those who enjoy challenges and outdoor activities that are accompanied by adrenaline and spectacular views, Volcán de Fuego is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country.

El Baile de la Caxuxa

E

n Baja Verapaz, las fiestas, dedicadas al patrón Santiago Apóstol, se celebran durante el mes de julio de cada año y, durante la inauguración de la feria en Cubulco, se llevan a cabo varios bailes tradicionales, incluyendo uno muy particular conocido como “Baile de la Caxuxa”.

En esta representación, dos vaqueros molestones bailan con el resto de los bailarines tradicionales en un baile del torito, hasta que logran atrapar al torito. Invariablemente, en el transcurso de la celebración los vaqueros se pasan de tragos y el ambiente se ve amenizado por las bromas resultantes de la interacción con los pobladores.

n the Baja Verapaz region, festivities dedicated to the patron saint Santiago Apostol are celebrated during the month of July every year and – during the inauguration of the town fair in Cubulco – various traditional dances are performed, including a very well-known one called the ‘Baile de la Caxuxa’.

In this performance, two jokers dressed as cowboys dance el baile del torito amongst the other traditional dancers until they manage to catch the ‘torito’ (representation of a bull).

Inevitably, during the celebrations these cowboys get more than a little tipsy and the atmosphere is enlivened by the jokes and interactions that they have with the spectators.

untoPhoto es uno de los grupos de fotografía que está cobrando fuerza en Guatemala. Es un lugar virtual de reunión para fotógrafos quienes quieren compartir sus experiencias y trabajo, así como para resolver sus inquietudes. Dentro de las actividades que se realizan para promover el aprendizaje de los miembros del grupo están los concursos con una temática a definir y un juez invitado que es el encargado de escoger los ganadores.

El juez invitado para el concurso con el tema “Desconstuyendo la Realidad” (con fotos conceptuales) fue el reconocido fotógrafo Joel Robinson. Qué Pasa te presenta a los ganadores.

PuntoPhoto is one of the photography groups in Guatemala that's gaining momentum. It's a virtual meeting place for photographers who want to share their experiences and work, as well as to address their concerns. Among its other activities, the group holds competitions in order to help members continue their photographic learning and growth. These competitions have a defined theme and a guest judge in charge of choosing the winners.

The guest judge for the contest with the theme “Deconstructing Reality” (conceptual photography) was famous photographer Joel Robinson. Qué Pasa presents the winners.

Oscar basó el guión de la película en sus propias experiencias de niño. Es así que el galardonado filme cuenta la historia de un niño llamado Chava que creció durante la guerra civil de El Salvador en los años 80.

amaste Foundation is hosting a special function in which they will present the film “Innocent Voices” and where the co-producer and writer of it, Oscar Torres, will be present to participate in a Q & A session at the end of the film.

Oscar based the script of the film on his own experiences as a child. Thus, the awardwinning film tells the story of a boy named Chava who grew up during the civil war in El Salvador in the 80s.

esde hace dos meses y medio hemos estado trabajando en un nuevo proyecto, el nuevo menú de temporada de Angeline. Quienes nos conocen saben que Angeline ha ido evolucionando y creciendo, pues es un compromiso que hemos adquirido con nosotros mismos, pero especialmente con quienes nos buscan porque conocen de nuestra cocina honesta.

Hoy en día, esta evolución se pone de manifiesto en la imagen, cartas de vinos, estilo de servicio, mixología, y especialmente en los menús de comida que hemos presentado desde que iniciamos.

Creemos firmemente que solamente innovando y cambiando podremos encontrar el alma de Guatemala a través de sus frutos, ingredientes, y herencia cultural. Si como Guatemaltecos deseamos ver a nuestro país como un destino gastronómico a nivel mundial, tenemos que reconocer y estar orgullosos de lo que nuestro país nos ofrece.

El nuevo menú de Angeline está basado en la Cosmovisión Maya, en esa herencia sagrada que fluye en nuestra tierra y que nos dice que todo tiene una razón de ser, todo está interrelacionado y especialmente, que todo lo que existe se apoya y complementa entre sí.

Esto lo interpretamos Angeline en nuestra gastronomía representando no sólo la diversidad de ingredientes naturales y de estación que Guatemala ofrece, sino también el encuentro de culturas y tradiciones gastronómicas que se da en un lugar tan mágico como en el que vivimos.

Estamos agradecidos del apoyo que hemos recibido de todos aquellos que han creído en nosotros desde el principio, queremos invitarles a que conozcan ahora el resultado del trabajo y esfuerzo en conjunto de la familia de Angeline trasladado a la cocina, con una propuesta que esperamos supere sus expectativas.

or the last two and a half months we have been working on a new project – the new seasonal menu of Angeline. Those who know us are aware that Angeline has been constantly growing and evolving.

This is a commitment that we have made not only to ourselves, but also to the customers that seek us out because they know our history of honest cooking.

Today, this evolution can be seen in our image, our wine menu, our service style, our excellent mixology… and especially in the food menus that we have been developing since we first began.

We firmly believe that by constantly innovating and changing, we can find the soul of Guatemala through its produce, its ingredients and its cultural heritage. If we as Guatemalans want to see our country held up as a culinary destination on a worldwide stage, we need to be proud of what our country has to offer in terms of natural produce and human resources.

Angeline’s new menu takes its inspiration from the Mayan Cosmovision – from the sacred heritage that nourishes our country and that tells us that everything has a reason for being; that everything is inter-related and special; that everything that exists complements and supports everything else.

We interpret this idea through our food – representing not just the diversity of natural and seasonal ingredients that Guatemala has to offer, but also the meeting of Guatemalan cultures and traditions that come together in the magical place in which we live.
